Transcript
- 0:03So welcome to another episode of the Modern yen Podcast.
- 0:07I'm your host, Kimberly Roberts of Soulful yen, and I'm super
- 0:11stoked to talk about today's topic, which is all about why
- 0:16frustration lives in the body. So grab yourself a latte or a
- 0:22tea, get on the couch, grab your favorite blanket and let's dive
- 0:27in, shall we? So there's an emotion that many
- 0:32high functioning women carry, but it's rarely talked about.
- 0:36Like rarely talked about. It's not sadness, it's not
- 0:40anxiety, it's frustration. Even that word frustration, like
- 0:46it even sounds like, right. So frustration is that kind of
- 0:53emotion that sits just beneath the surface.
- 0:56You know what? It's kind of like, I'll tell
- 0:57you, you know, when you sweep all the dirt underneath your
- 1:00carpet because you don't want to deal with it at the time, but
- 1:04then all of a sudden you notice one day, Oh my God, like, why is
- 1:06there a big hump like over top of my carpet?
- 1:10That's frustration. So frustration, What does it
- 1:15show up like? It shows up like impatience,
- 1:20irritability, tension in the body, especially in the hips.
- 1:28Like, do you ever feel like when you're really frustrated, like
- 1:31all of a sudden you're like hips are locked.
- 1:34It kind of feels like something in your life is stuck.
- 1:38Like you're like, like you're stuck in mud and you just can't,
- 1:41like, you can't get out, right? And most of the time we're just
- 1:45trying to like, manage that mentally, right?
- 1:48We try to reason with it. We try to push through it.
- 1:52We try to stay composed and calm and tell ourselves we're just
- 1:57fine. But for many women, they don't
- 2:00realize something. Frustration, It's not just a
- 2:04mental thing. It's not just a mental
- 2:06experience. It is physiological, OK?
- 2:11Frustration lives and shows up in your body.
- 2:15So let's talk about that Like why do women suppress
- 2:22frustration? Because high functioning women,
- 2:27especially over the age of 40, who's been nailing that for a
- 2:30long time, are incredibly good at staying composed and calm,
- 2:35right? They know how to be responsible.
- 2:38They know how to keep things moving forward.
- 2:41You know, they know how to show up for work for their family,
- 2:44their commitments, right? They know how to check off all
- 2:46the boxes. But because of that, frustration
- 2:51rarely gets expressed outwardly. Instead, it just gets managed.
- 2:57You. So you stay polite, you stay
- 2:59productive, you stay reliable, but your body still feels the
- 3:05pressure, right? Like it's almost like you can
- 3:08see the lid on the pot and it's just about to like, pop, but
- 3:14it's staying just a little bit contained, right?
- 3:18And here's the thing, when our emotions are not allowed to
- 3:21move, they don't disappear. They settle.
- 3:26They stay in the nervous system, in the muscles, in the breath,
- 3:31in the body. Think of the word emotion.
- 3:34If you break it down, emotion, meaning like emotions are meant
- 3:40to move, right? But they don't.
- 3:44So the frustration just stays there in the body.
- 3:48And you're probably wondering, well, how does frustration
- 3:52actually show up physically? Like, I know I'm frustrated, but
- 3:55like, where do I look in my body to see if I'm frustrated?
- 3:59Because you'll automatically assume in your mind, oh, yeah,
- 4:03I'm frustrated. But it's like, well, let's dive
- 4:05into the body and see, right? So you'll probably notice
- 4:10frustration in really subtle physical ways.
- 4:14Things like your jaws just a little bit tight, your shoulders
- 4:19that feel like they're just a little bit too heavy, The breath
- 4:25that never, you know, quite drops into the belly.
- 4:29It kind of just feels like it's stuck more in the chest.
- 4:32Digestive tension, That's a good one.
- 4:35You feel like knots in your stomach, headaches, that kind of
- 4:39low grade irritability that seems to appear out of nowhere.
- 4:44And you're like, why am I irritable?
- 4:47Like, what's going on? And here's the thing.
- 4:51Many women think that there's something wrong with them when
- 4:54they feel this way, but often there's nothing wrong.
- 4:58I want to tell you that in Chinese medicine, our emotions
- 5:02are just indicators. They're signals of where we're
- 5:05at energetically and emotionally.
- 5:09And your body is just holding that kind of energy, and it just
- 5:12hasn't been given permission to move yet, to move out.
- 5:19So that's kind of like the physical.
- 5:21It's like, OK, well, I can kind of understand that now.
- 5:24Yeah, My jaw is kind of tight. I kind of see that.
- 5:27But let's shift into something different.
- 5:29Let's shift gears. How about we talk about it
- 5:32through the Chinese medicine perspective, All right?
- 5:36Because traditional Chinese medicine is so my jam.
- 5:39And I love talking about it. And also traditional Chinese
- 5:42medicine, or I'm going to call it TCM going forward here.
- 5:45So you know what I'm talking about.
- 5:47It has a really fascinating kind of perspective on this.
- 5:53So in Chinese medicine, all of your organs have associated
- 5:57emotions with them, OK. And frustration is closely
- 6:04connected to the liver. Now, not the liver in the
- 6:08Western medical sense, OK, but the energetic system that is
- 6:13responsible for the smooth flow of energy throughout our body.
- 6:19That's what I'm talking about. OK, So when that flow becomes
- 6:22stuck or stagnant, then certain emotions start to show up
- 6:27because the body is just always communicating with us, right?
- 6:31So frustration will show up, Irritability, mood swings, kind
- 6:37of feeling like you're stuck in your life, feeling like things
- 6:41are just not moving forward. You're like, OK, am I stuck in a
- 6:45time warp or something? Like why am I just not moving
- 6:48here? Right?
- 6:50So in Chinese medicine, this is often described as liver chi
- 6:54stagnation. And interestingly, the season
- 7:00most connected to the liver is spring, because spring is a
- 7:05season of movement like we've been, you know, sedentary, calm
- 7:12still for the winter. We hibernate, right?
- 7:16So we're not doing a ton of movement.
- 7:19There's no real growth that's happening.
- 7:22But come spring, we have growth, plants start to come back,
- 7:26right? Seeds pop up, expansion.
- 7:30Nature is like, OK, I'm doing my thing.
- 7:33I'm waking on up. But if the energy in your body
- 7:37has been stuck for too long, that rising spring energy can
- 7:42feel really uncomfortable. It can feel suffocating.
- 7:47So instead of feeling like you're growing, you're going to
- 7:49feel like you're irritated. Instead of having clarity,
- 7:54you're going to feel restless. Instead of feeling expansive,
- 7:58you're going to feel blocked. And let me tell you, I know
- 8:01exactly what those vibrations feel like.
- 8:05And it's just, it's so frustrating.
- 8:08It really is because you're like, but I don't want to be
- 8:11frustrated. I don't want to be irritated.
- 8:13I don't want to be restless. I don't want to be blocked.
- 8:15Like I just want to move, right? But you're like, I can't.
- 8:19And it's like, why can't I? Because you need to take care of
- 8:23your liver. That's why.
- 8:25So let's talk about how your nervous system is connected to
- 8:29this because here's the piece that I missed for a long time, a
- 8:36really long time. And this is where the nervous
- 8:39system and Chinese medicine intersect beautifully.
- 8:44And when you get this piece, it'll almost be like light bulb
- 8:48moment. And you're like, Oh my God, now
- 8:50I get it. OK, so when your nervous system
- 8:54is constantly bracing, and if you've been in high stress
- 9:00States and you know, flight or fright for a really long time,
- 9:07guess what? You're bracing.
- 9:09Your nervous system is bracing and energy doesn't move easily.
- 9:12Think of like a garden hose with a bunch of kinks in it and the
- 9:16water is trying to flow through. Well, it's pretty hard, right?
- 9:20Like to get water to flow through something that's got
- 9:23kinks in it all the time. This is what's happening in your
- 9:26nervous system. It's like you've got all these
- 9:28kinks and nothing can move. So everything is just bracing,
- 9:32or it's just like, it's sluggish, or it's kind of like,
- 9:35OK, I move a little bit and I'm stuck.
- 9:37Move a little bit and I'm stuck. That's what happens.
- 9:40The body tightens the breath, it becomes shallow, your muscles
- 9:45start to contract, and emotional energy has fewer pathways to
- 9:51release. And what happens then?
- 9:54The frustration just keeps building.
- 9:56And it's not because you're an angry person.
- 9:59I really want to reiterate that it has nothing to do with that.
- 10:03It's only because your nervous system and your body have been
- 10:07holding pressure for way too long, right?
- 10:10It's like the pot on the stove. You put the lid on it and then
- 10:14it's fine for a little while. And then all of a sudden it's
- 10:16like you start seeing like the steam, right?
- 10:18And it's brewing and it's building and then building and
- 10:21it's building, but it's contained.
- 10:23But you can see that at one point that lids going to just
- 10:27pop right off, right? And that's the pressure
- 10:30releasing finally. And This is why we get
- 10:33frustrated and irritated, even like angry and resentful.
- 10:38And we don't want that, right? We want the energy to move.
- 10:43So why does stillness help release our emotions?
- 10:49Because this is really cool, this next part.
- 10:51OK, so listen in here. Practices that we explore in
- 10:55what I call modern yen are really powerful.
- 11:00It's stillness, it's slow movement between poses, it's
- 11:05breath, it's acupressure, it's reflexology, it's practices that
- 11:10createspace in your nervous system.
- 11:14And when your nervous system softens, something really
- 11:17interesting happens, OK? Energy begins to move.
- 11:21It's like the kinks, all of a sudden they start to open up and
- 11:25there's more space, right? And so it flows.
- 11:30The jaw starts to soften, the breath begins to deepen, the
- 11:34body begins to unwind, kind of like the kinks in the hose
- 11:38unwinding. And the frustration that once
- 11:42felt like it was stuck begins to move and release.
- 11:47It's not dramatic, but it's gradual and it's gentle if you
- 11:53don't force it. And here's the thing, it's
- 11:57consistency. You know, once a week going, I'm
- 12:01going to sit here and I'm going to do some yen poses and I'm
- 12:04going to release some. Frustration isn't the way to go.
- 12:09Small repetitive moments of stillness is what trains your
- 12:14nervous system to feel safe and allows your body to release what
- 12:18it's holding on to. OK, so This is why I have a
- 12:24seven day spring liver reset program coming up in the Soulful
- 12:29Yin Yoga app. It is tying in perfectly with
- 12:34the TCM wood element season that starts on March 20th.
- 12:37This is the spring, right? And in Chinese medicine, the
- 12:42wood element is associated with springtime.
- 12:45So it is the perfect time to support your body in releasing
- 12:50built up frustration and restoring the natural flow of
- 12:54energy. So over the seven days, we're
- 12:58going to explore simple yen practices, breath work,
- 13:02acupressure. There's a master class where I'm
- 13:05going to dive deep into talking about the wood element season
- 13:10and the tie in with the organs and the emotions.
- 13:13And this is all designed to unwind your nervous system and
- 13:17to help your body let go of what it's been holding on to for
- 13:22years, maybe even decades. So if this conversation is
- 13:27something that you're like, yeah, I could really use some
- 13:30support, then you're welcome to come and join us.
- 13:34So I want to tell you one thing. I want to leave you with one
- 13:37thing, frustration. It's not a character flaw.
- 13:42It's just a signal, right? Like it's a signal from your
- 13:47energetic and emotional body telling you that you know what
- 13:52something needs to move. Like if you think about an
- 13:54actual signal, like a signal is just doesn't sit there like it
- 13:58needs movement, right? And it's the same thing with
- 14:01your body. Your body needs the movement, it
- 14:05needs the expression, it needs the release.
- 14:09And sometimes, honestly, the most powerful way to create that
- 14:12release is not by forcing it, but by stillness.
- 14:18And that's truly what modern Ian is all about.
- 14:22It's where stillness does the real work.
- 14:26So thank you so much for pressing play on today's
- 14:30episode. I can't wait to see you in the
- 14:33next one. And you know what, At this
- 14:35point, I'm in my PJS again. And yes, they're Christmas
- 14:39pyjamas, but whatever. And we're heading into spring.
- 14:42But you know what? It is what it is.
- 14:44And I'm just going to roll with that because otherwise I'm going
- 14:49to get frustrated. And I don't want to be
- 14:51frustrated because I've spent way too much of my energy and my
- 14:55life in frustration. And now I just want to live in
- 14:59peace and in calm. So I'll see you in the next
- 15:02episode. Have an awesome rest of your
- 15:04day.
