- 0:11Welcome back to another episode of the Mindset Podcast.
- 0:14We're back episode 79 nearly the 80 how they feeling?
- 0:18I'm very excited for that 80, but I'm more excited for the 79.
- 0:21Yeah, that's what I'm. There's going to be some good
- 0:23topics today that I'm excited about.
- 0:24OK, so First things first, the way we always start. 2 minute
- 0:29news. You're going to count me down.
- 0:30I'll give you a little countdown and get a timer up.
- 0:32OK, we'll go in three. You ready?
- 0:34Yeah. OK, Cool, 321.
- 0:38OK. So starting off with Norway in
- 0:39the Winter Olympics, they won the whole thing.
- 0:42They came here with something like 18 gold medals, which is
- 0:44absurd. Team GB finished 18th.
- 0:47We had five medals across the board.
- 0:48We had three gold medals. That was 2 in skeleton.
- 0:52We had one in the mixed snowball cross.
- 0:54We had a silver medal in the men's curling and we had a
- 0:57bronze medal late into the competition in the women's
- 1:00freestyle skiing from the halfpipe with Zoe Atkin.
- 1:03Moving on from there we go to the rugby and in the Six Nations
- 1:07we had a crazy array of scores this week.
- 1:10So we started off with Scotland who narrowly beat Wales 2623
- 1:15before England took a bit more of a heavy loss to Ireland.
- 1:18Final score there being 42 to 21 and then we have France taking
- 1:22on Italy and France being the likely winner.
- 1:24They came out with a 33 to 8 win.
- 1:28That leaves France at the top of the table, followed by Scotland,
- 1:33then Ireland, then England. Bringing up the rear is Italy
- 1:37and then at the bottom of the table is Wales.
- 1:39Not too much of a surprise there.
- 1:40Anyway, we move on to Formula One.
- 1:42It's been testing week in Bahrain and there has been a lot
- 1:45coming out with Ferrari. That is very exciting for those
- 1:47of us that like a Lewis Hamilton opportunity in a season.
- 1:50So Ferrari have revealed some new toys, one of them being a
- 1:54rotating rear wing, which means that they've got much faster
- 1:58straight line speed. They've also done some launch
- 2:00control activity, meaning that getting off the line is
- 2:03incredibly efficient for them. There is also a video of Lewis
- 2:06Hamilton going from I believe 9th place on the grid and 14th
- 2:09place on the grid and being first into turn one at the
- 2:13Bahrain circuit. So that's exciting.
- 2:14Maybe it's a good year to be a Lewis Hamilton fan again.
- 2:18Finally, we are talking about a couple of different sports at
- 2:21the moment. So we've got men's football with
- 2:24Swansea having a new owner. Snoop Dogg has become an
- 2:27investor and a a part owner of the football club.
- 2:32He has got his own seat in one of the stands.
- 2:35And then the final bit of news is that Manny Pacquiao and Floyd
- 2:39Money Mayweather are coming out of retirement to take each other
- 2:41over on again in their last professional fight.
- 2:45As far as we're aware, they could just do it again.
- 2:46It sounds a little bit like Fast and Furious, but they're going
- 2:49to be re going at it in their fight on the 21st of September.
- 2:55Sorry, the 19th of September with a fight happening at the
- 2:59Sphere in Las Vegas. So that's going to be pretty
- 3:03crazy. One of them is 47, one of them
- 3:05is 48. One of them might die anyway.
- 3:08That's the news, another week full of rugby and Winter
- 3:11Olympics craziness. I'm really enjoying the amount
- 3:15of sport that's on, but I'm also not enjoying the amount of
- 3:18things that have been pissing us and other people off recently.
- 3:20So without further ado, grind my gears.
- 3:23Do you want to kick us off this week?
- 3:26Yeah, I'm, I'm going to need to. I've been like trying to
- 3:30compress this one for a while. It's quite niche though.
- 3:34You know the movement devil's press 2 dumbbells, so lie down
- 3:37before 2 dumbbells stand up, snatch overhead, right?
- 3:40So it's basically like. Burpee and snatch.
- 3:42If it's really heavy, you can clean and jerk.
- 3:43It's a movement that's been kind of forged from CrossFit.
- 3:47I think it was originally put into competition the first time
- 3:50in the Dubai Champs in like 2019 kind of time, but it's it's kind
- 3:55of now diluted its way or spread its way into other facets of the
- 3:59fitness industry. One thing that really upsets me,
- 4:03really grinds my gears is when people do devil's press, but not
- 4:08on hex dumbbells. So hex dumbbells obviously have
- 4:10flat edges, so the dumbbells aren't going to roll around or
- 4:13wobble. I see so many people doing
- 4:16devil's press on the roundhead dumbbells like the classic
- 4:19commercial gym rat. So you go down to the bottom.
- 4:22What's stopping the dumbbell just sliding out to the side?
- 4:24I've just it kills every fiber of Crossfitter and me.
- 4:28It's really sad. Strong wrists.
- 4:30Maybe that's what it's doing, but no, I'm so wrong.
- 4:32I. Don't think I've done devil's
- 4:34press with round dumbbells, but that I have been in gyms where
- 4:36I'm like what? This is really not why actually
- 4:39do you know what? Why are they round?
- 4:41Yeah, why don't? Why don't all the gyms just have
- 4:44hex dumbbells? I'm trying to think of a, a
- 4:46there must be a, a reason round dumbbells are better other than
- 4:50the fact, yes, if, if they're really heavy and you can't carry
- 4:53them, you push them, but for all them.
- 4:55But how did you get it? Surely that's isn't, that's not
- 4:57the reason. Surely they can't be.
- 4:58That's the logical reason though anyway.
- 5:00But no, that's, that's valid. That's that's very responsible
- 5:03of you from a coaching perspective.
- 5:05You're worried about other people's injuries for sure.
- 5:06Yeah. The next thing we've kind of
- 5:09touched on this before when we went, we went out to this pub
- 5:12dinner. There was like stupid calories
- 5:14and stuff. Again, was recently in America
- 5:17who had things a bit crazy, but I have come back and I've been
- 5:21like, Oh, I can't wait to have some healthier options.
- 5:24Some calories are just dumb. Like why is it?
- 5:30Why is a digestive biscuit 100 and something calories?
- 5:35It's nothing. There's nothing to it.
- 5:37It doesn't deserve that. And then, and then there's like
- 5:40other I can have a whole banana for that, but I don't want a
- 5:44whole banana. I want to fucking digest it.
- 5:46Why is why is that not been sorted out?
- 5:48And the other thing that kind of off the back of that, which I
- 5:50both love and hate, is that you can make anything healthy in my
- 5:55protein, but it has to just have a shit load of Greek yogurt in
- 5:58it. And we know this because I have
- 6:00adapted a banana bread workout. Yeah.
- 6:01Workout, workout. Yeah.
- 6:03I mean, maybe a banana bread recipe that just got a load of
- 6:06high protein Greek yogurt in it, which is just like low fat.
- 6:09It's great. But then one of my favorite
- 6:12homemade pizzas, which is also very high, it's just Greek
- 6:15yogurt. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:15All I'm eating is a Greek yogurt and everything.
- 6:17Yeah, I eat a lot of Greek yogurt now as well.
- 6:19Yeah, it's the the cost of ice, isn't it?
- 6:21Question for you 'cause I know you'll know the answer to this.
- 6:23Is Greek yogurt good for your gut?
- 6:25Oh, yeah, fantastic. Yeah, yeah, my microbiome.
- 6:28Is is yoga for it? Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 6:31Anyway, back over to you. My next grind, my gear is, is I,
- 6:35I'm also my grind, my own gear. And that's, that's that's how I
- 6:39realized that people are doing it because I was like, hang on a
- 6:42second. I'm also doing it now.
- 6:45It's when someone says they don't like doing it because it's
- 6:48boring in relation to fitness. So lots of people recently
- 6:53coming up to me being like, how do I get better at running XYZ?
- 6:56I'm like, well, you've probably just got to do more running.
- 6:58How much running you're doing at the moment?
- 7:00I don't really run. It's boring.
- 7:03Now, my problem here is it isn't boring.
- 7:07You're just bad at it. And because you're bad at it,
- 7:10you don't like it and therefore you don't like it.
- 7:14So you go, it's boring. That's like the, the, the, the,
- 7:17like the what's happening in the brain.
- 7:20Because I do the same with swimming.
- 7:22I don't like swimming so I go swimming's boring.
- 7:26Is swimming actually boring or is it just because I'm bad at
- 7:28it? There's nothing for me to like,
- 7:30get stimulated by, I'm just bad at swimming so it's boring.
- 7:33If I was good at swimming and I had the ability to do a more
- 7:36productive and structured session and follow paces a
- 7:39little bit better, would I be more engaged in it and therefore
- 7:42find it less boring? It's the same with like, I'd
- 7:45rather do a hard threshold run or tempo run versus an easy long
- 7:51run because it's more engaging for my brain when I go running
- 7:54because there's paces that I have to hit and I have to do
- 7:56certain things to like manage my fatigue and my breathing,
- 7:59etcetera, etcetera. Therefore, it's not boring, but
- 8:01the blanket statement of going it's boring isn't actually true,
- 8:06you're just bad at it. That's a hot take.
- 8:09Hot take because I think I, because you're actually stand on
- 8:14the side of the fence where like I do find running boring really,
- 8:18but it depends on the session. And it was interesting that you
- 8:21said you would rather go and do the tempo ones.
- 8:23Yeah, but it's interesting that you said you would rather go and
- 8:25do the tempo ones rather than the long ones.
- 8:28Because the long ones I find more interesting because I go
- 8:32and explore like I'm going to. Whereas my tempo ones, I think
- 8:35for me, especially recently running in the UK with it
- 8:38raining every single fucking day of the year, yeah, yeah, I'm
- 8:41going to be on a treadmill and just stare at the wall.
- 8:43That's boring. But the other?
- 8:45The other. But then for me, I'm like, I
- 8:47have data there. It's like the same when you sit
- 8:48on a, if I go, I'm going to go and ski for an hour, even if
- 8:53it's low aerobic. I'm playing games with the
- 8:56numbers on the monitor, with my stroke rate, with my heart rate.
- 8:59Sometimes it's like, can I get to a certain point in the one
- 9:03hour within a certain heart rate zone and other people look at
- 9:07that and go, Nah, ski looks boring doing that thing.
- 9:10I was boring. I'm like.
- 9:11I think it's. It is a hot take.
- 9:14It no, it's, it's an interesting take.
- 9:16I think this is partly generational to be honest,
- 9:20because in this in this day and age, how often are you actually
- 9:25bored? Because everything in society
- 9:28now is about capturing your attention back in three seconds
- 9:32or whatever. Whether that's on socials or
- 9:34even just like as you're walking out and about the adverts and
- 9:36the the things that you see, you've just got crazy statements
- 9:38and you're just eyes are dying from left to right.
- 9:41But then I think therefore going and sitting on a bike, sitting
- 9:46on a ski, being on a rowing machine, when it is just
- 9:50nothingness, like immediately, yeah, that is boring.
- 9:54But there's like levels to boredom.
- 9:56It's not like I'm locked in a room with nothing.
- 9:58That is boring. But then.
- 10:01But then I'm also like, if I'm on the cross trainer or
- 10:03something for like 90 minutes, I'm probably watching something.
- 10:06Yeah. So it's like, again, I, I and I
- 10:10will listen to music. Yeah.
- 10:12So I'm just like, for me it's not boring.
- 10:15Yeah, I think, I think something like a track session to me, if I
- 10:18was doing a track session that isn't boring, I don't strictly
- 10:22enjoy it per SE. Well, that's the difference,
- 10:25right? But I, I, I get something out of
- 10:27there. Whereas if I was to go and do a
- 10:30threshold effort like a A6 to 8K at a set pace, that's going to
- 10:35be depending on the speed and who you are.
- 10:37But like, let's say for me, that's going to be anywhere
- 10:40between like 24 and 45 minutes, depending on the distance and
- 10:47the speed. But like 24 minutes is quite a
- 10:49long time to be on the edge of uncomfortable.
- 10:52And like that's, that is kind of boring when like when you're at
- 10:55a level where like it's verging on uncomfortable, but it's not
- 10:59that hard. It's just not easy.
- 11:02And it's kind of like that gets boring like that internal
- 11:05discussion, 24 minutes to 40. That's the fun of it.
- 11:09Is it fun though? Yeah, yeah.
- 11:10That's, that's funny. It's fun when you get to the end
- 11:12'cause you're like I did it. But like, but the whole time
- 11:15you're like talking yourself out of doing it.
- 11:17Yeah, and it's not necessarily that that mental force.
- 11:19I find that discussion boring, really.
- 11:22That internal discussion. I'm like, 'cause I know I'm
- 11:24going to do it. Yeah, I know I'm competitive
- 11:26about that. I win it.
- 11:27But I. Think it's more of like the
- 11:29blanket statement of going, I'm not going to do that because
- 11:31it's boring. Yeah.
- 11:32Because you know you're bad at it and you don't like it and
- 11:34it's going to be hard, Yeah. I don't.
- 11:36I don't disagree with the. Fact if I was.
- 11:38Running. If I was running, if I had done
- 11:40the training or I had the fitness to run like 315 per
- 11:43kilometer and the open and the broad width of training that
- 11:46enabled me to do, then maybe I would find running more
- 11:49interesting. But I'm in a position where I
- 11:50have cycled between being able to run a 5K in just under 19
- 11:54minutes to 21 minutes across the last two years.
- 11:57So often I'm just like running. It's actually quite boring.
- 12:01But again, I'm bad at it in the ground scheme of things.
- 12:06So there we go that way. My final one is something that I
- 12:12mentioned to you, but I had someone talk to me about just
- 12:16over a week ago. I forgot to bring it off in the
- 12:18last episode. The American team, the Winter
- 12:24Olympics, the American clothing. So every, every nation has
- 12:28obviously got whoever to make it.
- 12:30I think Italy's got Armani. Making those something on there.
- 12:33Whoever's made the American one, I was saw a video on Instagram
- 12:37and I sent it to you. You need to but someone else.
- 12:40Mentioned this. Basically the Americans have
- 12:43gone to the Olympic Games in Tesco uniforms and they don't
- 12:47know that because they don't have Tesco.
- 12:48It's incredible. But the blue and the red of
- 12:51their uniform. So I was watching an Instagram
- 12:54reel that was put out by one of the athletes travelling out with
- 12:56their like competitors, their teammates, and I thought it was
- 13:00Tesco doing an advert around the Winter Olympics.
- 13:03I thought it was genius marketing, but no, it's actually
- 13:06so yeah, Team US, they're like loungewear clothing is the Tesco
- 13:11units. So you're all ready to go on the
- 13:13check out. It doesn't work out in your
- 13:15career. But yeah, it really, it's always
- 13:16been that there's like not one person has looked at it and
- 13:19gone. Do we reckon in other countries
- 13:22like that, it's going to look like, imagine if the UK turned
- 13:25up looking like we worked in fucking Target or Costco,
- 13:28something like that. What?
- 13:30So yeah, that that was that. That was more funny than
- 13:33grandma. But you have to put the
- 13:34comparison. Up on the screen.
- 13:35Bring that in. Yeah, for sure.
- 13:37Now today we're going back to a main topic that we mentioned as
- 13:40news at the back end of I think Episode 77.
- 13:43It was a couple of because the. VO2 Max world record had been
- 13:47smashed. 101 was the reading in the complicated units that
- 13:52followed Christian Blumenfeld, who is a triathlete if I'm not
- 13:57mistaken. Here.
- 13:59You understand far more about the methodology and you've done
- 14:02a bit more research into this. So do you want to take us
- 14:05through how? And you have a VO2 Max that high
- 14:09I mean. Firstly, because because we we
- 14:12brushed over it so quickly at the back end of that episode
- 14:15where it's like it, I think at that point we're like, we
- 14:17actually need to discuss this in much more detail.
- 14:20I think lots of people be interested in it just in even if
- 14:23you're not into triathlon or endurance sport, just the
- 14:27physical feat of having avo 2 Max that high is just like mind
- 14:31blowing to the point where it's like it's hard to compute.
- 14:35So just in general, someone with over like 60 VO 2 Max is really
- 14:41impressive, very fit, right? And then you're getting up into
- 14:45the 70s and you're like you, this person is an absolute
- 14:48specimen, like a genetic freak. There's only been a handful of
- 14:51people ever to get over 90. And I think that the most
- 14:56recently highest recorded was something like 97.
- 14:58I think it was also a Norwegian, someone doing like cross country
- 15:02skiing or something like that. To go past 100 is just like,
- 15:07it's like, so hopefully we can break it down, have a look at
- 15:09his training and, and understand what his training looks like.
- 15:12But for those of you who, and I'll upset a lot of the people
- 15:14who like the science because I'm going to try my best to dumb it
- 15:17down. Basically what your VO2 Max is
- 15:20showing you. It's like the, the
- 15:22transportation of the absorption of oxygen into the, into the
- 15:25tissues or your muscles when you need it.
- 15:28But there's two things that you're doing when you start
- 15:29exercising. Your heart is pumping more
- 15:32volume of blood. We call that stroke volume.
- 15:35And then it's also increasing the heart rate.
- 15:38And you'll feel that when you train.
- 15:39When you train, obviously your heart rate gets higher and as a
- 15:41result, you get warmer, et cetera, et cetera.
- 15:44So the first thing your body does when you start exercises,
- 15:46it starts transporting more volume of blood.
- 15:49Now, I can't remember what the number is, and I should really
- 15:52remember what the number is, but in normal people, there's a
- 15:55point where your body just can't push any more volume of blood.
- 16:01So the compensation for that is higher heart rate.
- 16:03So your heart rate starts to increase and you'll know an
- 16:06exercise, there's a point in exercise where your heart rate
- 16:08just won't go any higher. And if you do, you have a heart
- 16:10attack and you die. But instead, what happens?
- 16:12You just reach your Max and then you start coming down.
- 16:15It's that point where you can't go any higher with your heart
- 16:18rate. That's your VO2 Max basically.
- 16:19And that's, that's how you kind of measure it.
- 16:22And, and there's lots more science behind it and lots more
- 16:25numbers and, and, and variations and nuances around it.
- 16:28But it's like an easy way to think about it.
- 16:31Those are the two metrics that I'd suggest trying to understand
- 16:34it. Then you look at how you kind of
- 16:36develop your aerobic fitness, because that's what we're trying
- 16:39to do here. I think the best way to imagine
- 16:42your aerobic fitness is a triangle and to maximize your
- 16:46fitness, you want to try and maximize the surface area of
- 16:49your triangle. So not only do you want to build
- 16:52width and we, we sometimes refer to the width as like your low
- 16:56aerobic fitness, but you also want to build the height.
- 16:59And it's the height of the triangle, which I would say is
- 17:02like the VO2 Max in, in like a simple way of thinking of it.
- 17:05So the width, the base is your low aerobic, let's call it zone
- 17:092 for now. And then the top or the height,
- 17:12the peak is your, your VO2 Max. So you got to try and create a
- 17:16really wide base, obviously to then support the high you go.
- 17:21And I think you look at most people's training like let's
- 17:24call us everyday athletes, I'd say the majority of what we're
- 17:27doing is probably like 8020. It's 80% low aerobic, 20% high,
- 17:33like VO2 Max and interval work. If you look at someone like
- 17:36Christian Blumenfeld, I guess it's all relative because he's
- 17:39doing far more training and far more volume than we ever will be
- 17:42able to probably manage. But he's probably doing like a
- 17:459010. So like 90% lower aerobic, 10%
- 17:50intervals. But in reality, he's obviously
- 17:51doing a lot more interval work than we are.
- 17:53But just in terms of percentage of his overall training, it's
- 17:579010. And another really good example
- 17:59is today Pogacha, where I'd love to talk about who's the world's
- 18:02best cyclist, maybe one of the best cyclists ever.
- 18:05He's probably sitting in around 9010 as well.
- 18:08But that's kind of how you want to to look at your training.
- 18:12And you, you can tell me to shut up at any point if you want me
- 18:16to. But we call that training style
- 18:17pyramidal, obviously, for obvious reasons.
- 18:20There's a few different ways that you can train and you can
- 18:23look at your training, but I think what most people fall into
- 18:25the trap of doing is they do their low, easy stuff too
- 18:30difficult and they don't do their hard stuff hard enough.
- 18:33Yeah. So as a result, they fall in the
- 18:35middle. And I call that junk training.
- 18:37Other people call it garbage training or garbage volume, that
- 18:40kind of thing. No, it's same thing really.
- 18:42But it's like, yes, doing that is better than sitting on the
- 18:46sofa. But if you're looking at
- 18:48maximizing or optimizing your performance, your performance
- 18:51potential, you want to really try and focus on working your
- 18:55low easy stuff, making sure it is low and easy, and your hard
- 18:58stuff really hard. Because then this comes into a
- 19:01massive misconception about the Norwegian training method.
- 19:04So threshold is becoming slightly understood, but a lot
- 19:10of people will think, oh, my threshold session is really,
- 19:12it's not zone 5, it's like zone 4, sort of heart rate level.
- 19:15And then you hear double threshold days.
- 19:17You're like, Oh my gosh, they're hitting zone 4:00 every single
- 19:19day. And it's actually that's not the
- 19:21case. Even with triple threshold days,
- 19:22they're not hitting zone 4 three times a day.
- 19:24They're being very, very specific about which threshold
- 19:27they want to be in because there are multiple thresholds.
- 19:30So they might actually have a lot of it.
- 19:32Like you said, 90% might be easy work.
- 19:34So you might be a zone one, zone 2 threshold session twice in the
- 19:37day. And then they do have their one
- 19:39intense session. I don't know if you've got
- 19:41anything else that's like misunderstood around.
- 19:43Yeah, I think there's so that we we spoke about pyramidal just
- 19:46then the the kind of the flip of pyramidal is we call it
- 19:50polarized training where there's 22 pyramids that are basically
- 19:54stacked on each on top of each other with the peak of the
- 19:56pyramids touching. So you've got a really wide base
- 20:00with your lower aerobic. It then goes basically to
- 20:02nothing in the middle. Those are your zones like threes
- 20:05and fours. And then it's huge at the top
- 20:08again, basically the same size as the bottom of your pyramid.
- 20:11So it looks like an hourglass basically.
- 20:13So you've got a lot of lot of VO2 Max work at the top and a
- 20:17lot of lower aerobic at the the bottom.
- 20:20And without being able to see specifically what Kristen
- 20:23Blumenfeld's training looks like, he could be doing
- 20:25something similar. Lots of professional athletes
- 20:28across, I think like the the realms that we work in and kind
- 20:32of like high rocks and hybrid training try to do something
- 20:34similar where they're just cutting out all of that middle
- 20:37stuff. The reason why people tend to do
- 20:39a lot of volume in their lower aerobic is because it's not
- 20:44conducive to kind of muscle soreness or muscle fatigue.
- 20:48So you can do lots of it and then go again the next day, go
- 20:52again the next day, go again the next day.
- 20:53Well you said we don't have his actual training plan unlike the
- 20:56last couple of episodes. We actually do have a week
- 21:00overview from his coach who is I need to get this right, Arld
- 21:04Featon. I'm just going to be my.
- 21:07He must, I think he must work with, with multiple because
- 21:10there's, unless he's dropped his original coach because he was
- 21:12working with a guy called Olaf Alexander who was like the real
- 21:16numbers guy. And, and they must have popped
- 21:18on the scene like I'm going to say 3-4 years ago where it
- 21:22really started to come to mainstream media where you'd see
- 21:25him in the pool when he's getting blood lactate and he's
- 21:27putting oxygen masks on and all this sort of stuff.
- 21:29And people were like, this is revolutionary.
- 21:31It's not really the Norwegian training method is like is
- 21:34age-old and, and before kind of the, the surge of East African
- 21:39athletes in distance running, it was all Scandinavian athletes,
- 21:43Finnish, Danish, Norwegians who were the best at long distance.
- 21:47If you look back at the medals tables and you're looking
- 21:49anywhere between like, I don't know, 1500 through to like 5-10
- 21:53K, maybe even longer distance, they're all being dominated by
- 21:57Scandinavian athletes. So like the Norwegian method is,
- 21:59is something that's kind of like steeped in tradition.
- 22:03Someone like Jakubinger Britson is also a really good case
- 22:05study. It might be fun to look at him
- 22:06as well, but I think he he works the same kind of like double
- 22:10triple threshold sessions that Christian is also I.
- 22:13Think one of the interesting thing is between those two
- 22:15athletes though, and more so on Christian's side is because he's
- 22:18a triathlete, he has three different disciplines to master.
- 22:21Whereas Inger Briggs and but he will obviously incorporate
- 22:24different methods, aerobic training and different strength
- 22:27training. But with Christian, this
- 22:31overview gives a really good insight to understanding his
- 22:34training. And what it doesn't say is
- 22:37threshold day, double threshold day.
- 22:39This is just his session. So if you're wondering what a
- 22:41double threshold or a triple threshold they might look like,
- 22:44have a listen. So.
- 22:45I think what will be shocking as well is like just total volume.
- 22:49We'll do a summation of the number of hours in the end,
- 22:51which I think will shock a few people.
- 22:52And this is what it's actually like to be a professional long
- 22:57course track. Long course track.
- 22:58Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:59So I mean, he has got, I don't know if you consider it short
- 23:01course. Has he?
- 23:01Has he got the? World record.
- 23:03So yeah, he's got world record for the 70.3, which is half Iron
- 23:07Man. I think that's still long
- 23:09course. I think any longer than Olympic
- 23:11distance could be completely misquoted there, but I think he
- 23:15came third in this year's About Iron Man World Championships.
- 23:20I think he came second in this year's 70.3 World Championships.
- 23:24But then I think he set it was like the IT must have been the
- 23:27world record at the time at another race for the 70.3.
- 23:31But he's also won Olympic gold medals in Olympic distance
- 23:35triathlete in 2020. I think it must be Tokyo like.
- 23:38He's not just a guy in a good deal team.
- 23:40He's like out surround. Yeah, he's like a a very, very
- 23:43well renowned triathlete. So Monday morning, what he'll be
- 23:48doing. Yeah, he will be doing 30
- 23:50minutes of movement slash basic stuff before swimming.
- 23:54So that's probably just like warming up mobility kind of
- 23:56thing, but 30 minutes of it, then he'll be doing 2 hours of
- 23:59swimming. That is already just, like,
- 24:02shocking. As far as I'm aware, because
- 24:03we've not been given like a session specifically.
- 24:05Any time that that's not given, it's easy.
- 24:08OK. So two hours of just swimming in
- 24:11a pool, Yeah. Mad base building, right?
- 24:13Yeah, exactly. Then that's the morning.
- 24:16So then in the afternoon, he's doing an hour and a half of
- 24:19running intervals, so that might look like 8 by 1.
- 24:22K Yeah, yeah. And then to finish.
- 24:24Is this a 20 * 400 or? 12 by 4. 100 yeah, yeah, those
- 24:28are like the famous ones. Yeah.
- 24:29And and next to this and again we we weren't able to fully
- 24:32understand the coding on this L3, which we're thinking is
- 24:35probably like to zone 3. Maybe something like that?
- 24:39Because I mean, we, we know LT1 and LT2, there is an LT3 to my
- 24:43knowledge your different threshold and lactate levels.
- 24:45So if we we can assume maybe Zone 3.
- 24:49So again, if that is the case, that's not an all out eight by
- 24:521K which you might be doing in your training once a week and
- 24:55like in Zone 5 for 90% of those. I think what's really important
- 24:58is like when you try and decipher anything exercise
- 25:02Physiology related online, lots of different research papers,
- 25:06different scientists, different academics, whoever's kind of
- 25:10writing the paper that you're reading or what you're listening
- 25:12to, Everyone uses slightly different terminology and
- 25:15sometimes the terminology can mean the same thing even though
- 25:18it sounds different. It's, it's, it's a really
- 25:21confusing rabbit hole to go down in.
- 25:24So it's like we'll just do our best basically off what we'd
- 25:27feel is probably suitable for for the the plan that we've got
- 25:31here. Yeah.
- 25:32So that's, that's Monday done. So the, the swimming in the
- 25:34morning, long easy swimming in the morning and then a slightly
- 25:37more challenging running into us in the afternoon.
- 25:39Tuesday the morning is almost identical, but rather than two
- 25:42hours of swimming, you've got your 30 minutes of movement
- 25:45basic work before an hour and a half of swimming.
- 25:48Then in the afternoon you've got 4 hours of cycling and 30
- 25:53minutes of running, all at L1, which we're again going to
- 25:55assume is like zone 1. Yeah, like it's really, really
- 25:58easy. But 4 1/2 hours that afternoon
- 26:00after two hours work in the morning.
- 26:02So like a, a proper brick session then, yeah.
- 26:04And and that's, that's going to be like, that's triathlon
- 26:06specific, isn't it? Running off the bike?
- 26:09You've all heard of that before. But already I'm just, I'm just
- 26:13shocked at how much he's doing. And, and I know we were speaking
- 26:15before we started the podcast. It's like we're reading
- 26:18Christian has a heavy reliance on caffeine.
- 26:21Like no one, no shit. Yeah.
- 26:24So Wednesday then if we get into Wednesday, we're back to
- 26:27Monday's morning routine. So we've got 30 minutes like
- 26:29basic movement, and then we've got two hours of swimming.
- 26:33Afternoon. We've got 3 hour transition
- 26:36exercise. So this is brick style.
- 26:38So this is an hour and 45, cycling an hour and 50 and
- 26:40running 8. Here we go.
- 26:46It says AM uphill biking L3 plus running on a track so I'm I
- 26:50don't know if that's like 8 miles 8 but 8 miles uphill
- 26:54biking is that. No, I, I I wouldn't imagine it's
- 26:57miles in terms of biking, but could be.
- 27:00But anyway, it's it's uphill biking I would assume for a
- 27:03decent proportion time based on everything else he does a
- 27:05difficult level of difficulty. And then running on a track at a
- 27:09slightly either the same or a harder intensity.
- 27:12You've got 1-2 K effort, 21K efforts, then 31K efforts, then
- 27:204 by 600 meters, then 5 by 400 meters.
- 27:24If you try and break that down, I'll tell you what the total
- 27:27volume is on that. Well, the thing I'm, I'm, I'm
- 27:30just going to go in with, it's like, obviously it feels like a
- 27:32lot of volume, but you're training for, you're training
- 27:36for an event which is going to span over the course of like 8
- 27:40to 10 hours, probably. Remember off the back of your
- 27:43swim and your bike, your bike being 180 kilometres, you're
- 27:48then going into a marathon. So it's like you then have to
- 27:50run 42 kilometres. And these guys are like, they're
- 27:52not slouches like off the bike. They're running like, I don't
- 27:55want to be misquoted, but there is they're they're not going
- 27:58crazy fast where you think of like elite level marathon
- 28:01runners. They probably have it close to
- 28:03that in the tank if they're fresh.
- 28:05Yeah, they're running close to like 2 1/2 hours off the back of
- 28:07180 kilometer bike. So the volume that they're doing
- 28:11here, obviously it's taken them years and years and years to
- 28:13develop the resilience and the tolerance to that.
- 28:15And they're doing lots of everyday he's doing exercises,
- 28:19stretching, mobility, strength work around that is a help make
- 28:23sure his body can tolerate it. But it's not like he's just
- 28:25taking this plan and the next day he's implemented it.
- 28:28So it's like if you are looking to get into longer course
- 28:31triathlon or long distance triathlon, start easy and just
- 28:36build yourself like you would with anything that you're doing
- 28:38so. He this, it looks like this
- 28:41Wednesday in particular is, is probably one of his harder days
- 28:43because I mean, we've said what he did in the morning with the
- 28:45long swim. He's then done his three hours
- 28:47of cycling into running. But then the session of that is
- 28:5411.4 K worth of intervals at zone 3 to zone 4.
- 28:59And that being pretty strenuous and like tough on the the
- 29:04nervous system, but also the muscles.
- 29:05Thursday is 2 hours of easy training of choice.
- 29:10So he might take a day away from the pool.
- 29:14But yeah, training of choice, whatever, Just for two hours,
- 29:16just get that. In I think honestly, like the
- 29:19the the session I see a lot of thrown around from the Norwegian
- 29:23training is like the classic is the the 20 by 400.
- 29:27I've seen that a lot yeah, the track, but also like 12 by 1 K.
- 29:30And I'm just like if I had a session with 121K and it's like,
- 29:35and they're going fast, like they run real hard and they're
- 29:38like really starting to to get some lactic going.
- 29:41So it's, I mean, it's incredible volume, but yeah.
- 29:43Friday, easy day for a lot of people working from home.
- 29:47Unfortunately not. We're both doing 30 basic bits
- 29:50of movement before swimming and then we've got two hours back in
- 29:53the pool and then in the afternoon we've got 2 1/2 hours
- 29:56on the bike and then we've got some hill intervals to finish
- 30:00that, which I'm I again, we're using the, the lowercase M here.
- 30:05We're literally reading this off the website at this point in
- 30:07time, but I'm I'm tempted to say that the M is minutes, so like
- 30:12the previous one might have just been 8 minutes of continuous.
- 30:14Uphill side and then I'm just like, well, that's, that's
- 30:16typical VO2 Max because for VO2 Max efforts, we're looking
- 30:20anywhere between 3:00 and 8:00 minutes worth of work.
- 30:22Anything less than three, you're probably not getting enough
- 30:25stimulus. Anything over 8 minutes, it's no
- 30:27longer AVO 2 Max effort because you just can't sustain that
- 30:29heart rate unless you're probably Christian.
- 30:32So I mean, that might be a, a reasonable guess because that's
- 30:36what we look for. And and then also on that point,
- 30:39for VO2 Max efforts, interval efforts, you're probably looking
- 30:43somewhere around 1:00 to 1:00 work rest ratio.
- 30:45So if you're going to do an 8 minute effort, you're probably
- 30:48looking somewhere like 6 to 8 minutes rest.
- 30:50Yeah. And that's something that I
- 30:52think people misjudge as well, because they want to go really,
- 30:54really hard and they want to make the session feel really,
- 30:56really difficult. Yeah, but actually your output's
- 30:58going to be much better if you have enough time to recover
- 31:01before you then repeat the effort.
- 31:02So yeah, this, this by session of 2 1/2 hours, which is
- 31:06unfollowed by hill intervals, is 1 by 20 minutes moving up to a
- 31:10zone 3, then 2 by 10 minutes in zone 3, and then 5 by 5 minutes
- 31:14in zone 3. So it's sort of breaking down,
- 31:15but all at the same intensity. And then that's followed by one
- 31:18hour of easy running. Yeah, straight off the bike.
- 31:21Yeah, Saturday, no weekends, no days off.
- 31:25We're back doing basic movement and we've got 90 minutes of
- 31:28swimming today and then we're going into the afternoon.
- 31:30We are doing running. We've got an hour and a half of
- 31:33running, 30 minutes zone to rest and then finish it off with easy
- 31:38zone 1 running. And then we follow that with 2
- 31:411/2 hours of easy cycling. So you're still getting 4 hours
- 31:45of work done in the afternoon, Sunday morning, 4 hours.
- 31:51Still going. Yeah, 70 minutes of that is
- 31:55zone, 220 minutes of zone 3 at the end.
- 31:58So across the last hour and a half, you're starting to up the
- 32:01intensity. But the, the 1st 3 1/2, sorry,
- 32:02the 1st 2 1/2 hours of that seemingly is just like zone 1,
- 32:07like just sitting, moving your legs.
- 32:09And I guess that's the common theme across the week, isn't it?
- 32:12Right. And then the afternoon final
- 32:13thing on a Sunday that he's had programmed is an hour and a half
- 32:16of running with hill intervals, 4 by 6 in zone 3 and then four
- 32:20by three in zone 3. Yeah, which I would assume again
- 32:23is minutes. So yeah, 6 minutes, 6 minutes, 3
- 32:27minutes. And what that brings us out as a
- 32:29total volume in time, he's doing 9 1/2 hours of swimming per
- 32:34week. He's doing, it's crazy, 15 hours
- 32:37of cycling per week, 7 hours of running per week, and he's doing
- 32:402 1/2 hours of just like mobility, movement, basic.
- 32:44Stuff. I think that's also some
- 32:45strength work in there as well. I would, I would imagine there
- 32:49would be there's so across that that's 24 1/2, that's 33 1/2
- 32:56hours training, 34 hours training per week, which is a
- 33:01lot. I, I mean, I've been like cross
- 33:03referencing a few different sources and like a lot of the
- 33:05top triathletes are doing anywhere between like 6 and 8
- 33:08hours a day. And I'm just like, I, I mean,
- 33:11like these are triathletes training specifically for Iron
- 33:15Man, which is like the longest distance you can do.
- 33:18It's just, it is completely your life.
- 33:21That's why I have so much respect for anyone who's doing
- 33:25it as a hobby or like going and trying and doing their first
- 33:29ever Iron Man and they're doing their training around work and
- 33:32they're like, OK, I'm going to do a bike session in the morning
- 33:34and I'm going to swim in the evening.
- 33:36Maybe if I have time, I'm going to have to go and run at
- 33:38lunchtime. It's just like it's a lot to
- 33:40have to to juggle. So anyone who can finish an Iron
- 33:43Man, especially with a full time job, there's there's no high
- 33:46respect from me. I think it's like, incredible.
- 33:48It's so true because I even even to be able to finish an Iron Man
- 33:51like you might not be doing this amount of time, but you're still
- 33:53aiming for probably 20 hour weeks as you're getting closer
- 33:57to the actual. Event.
- 33:57A lot of training. A lot of time when you consider,
- 33:59I mean, for the sort of person that's listening to this
- 34:02podcast, they probably do get up before they need to roll out of
- 34:04bed and go to work. So let's say you get up at, I
- 34:07don't know, between 6:00 and 7:00 and then you start work at
- 34:099:00. That's three hours minus
- 34:11commute, two hours. And then when you get home from
- 34:13work as well, you've probably only got two to three hours.
- 34:17We should really be getting into bed.
- 34:18So then you've only got 5 hours a day out around work.
- 34:22If you really wanted to, like you said, you could try and
- 34:23squeeze something in on a lunch break, but you've got five
- 34:26hours. That's if you wanted to match
- 34:29his session. That's all of your time gone.
- 34:30I'd be like, I'm super impressed when someone can piece together
- 34:33like 10 to 12 hours of training in a week.
- 34:36If you imagine like the the the normal gym goer might do four to
- 34:39five classes a week, four or five hours done.
- 34:44This is 30 odd hours. I like to do that in
- 34:47perspective. When I was doing American
- 34:49football, I used to do 14 to 16 hours of training a week.
- 34:53And that didn't include, like, sitting in a classroom and
- 34:55watching game film. So let's say including that, it
- 34:58was like 18 hours a week. But it fully consumed my life
- 35:00100% Yeah. I lived it.
- 35:02I breathed it. I wouldn't be able to do it if I
- 35:03wasn't a university where like, I could catch up on lectures
- 35:06because I was watching film or like going to the gym instead.
- 35:09Well. I mean, fortunately for him,
- 35:10he's a professional athlete, so you'd assume he's doing that.
- 35:14I think there's a few things that we also want to consider.
- 35:16It's like, have we got at what point in his season this is?
- 35:21I don't know how his volume and intensity fluctuates around
- 35:25racing, what his kind of like taper process looks like or
- 35:29preparation into competitions. The only other thing also, when
- 35:33I was doing my research, I was looking at some of his swimming
- 35:36sessions. I don't know if you've ever
- 35:37tried to decipher swimming programming.
- 35:40No, for someone who's like, I've worked in fitness for, this is
- 35:44probably my 10th year. And a lot of that time I spend
- 35:46programming athletes and writing programs, etcetera, etcetera.
- 35:49Like I feel like I have a good grasp.
- 35:51But yeah, yeah, when I look at swimming programming, it might
- 35:54as well be in a completely different language.
- 35:55I'm just like, it's so alien to me.
- 35:58And there's so many different like abbreviations and like
- 36:00things. You're kicking these drills this
- 36:03and that and I was just so confusing.
- 36:05I was just like when he obviously like some of those
- 36:07pool sessions. I don't think it's put anything
- 36:09other than easy work. We just assume that it might be
- 36:12a certain point. It seems in ways developing a
- 36:14bigger base, but he will be doing a lot of drills.
- 36:17He will be doing a lot of intensity in the pool as well.
- 36:20I think that's the one thing that's so impressive and it's
- 36:22it's hard to get a grasp of when you watch them in in the
- 36:24swimming pool. You watch them in in the ocean
- 36:26when they're doing their races, how fast they are at swimming
- 36:29and how quickly they get through the the Iron Man swim is just
- 36:34incredible. Yeah, this is this is
- 36:36specifically from week 17, which is the 24th or the 30th of April
- 36:41in 2017. So this is this is actually like
- 36:44ancient. This is ancient in comparison to
- 36:46the results that he's just gone again, like the methodology is
- 36:50still there and I would imagine. That I think that's why it's.
- 36:53Volume. Yeah, the volume is going to be
- 36:56probably not outrageously different to Nurse, but then
- 37:02I've got a question. I know you don't like me putting
- 37:03you on the spot, but this is from my understanding of testing
- 37:06VO2 Max. Surely it's quite dependent on
- 37:10what you're tested on because. Oh, in terms of the actual.
- 37:13Equipment, yeah, because a lot, I mean, for example, when we
- 37:16spoke about my, my, me being better on a bike in terms of
- 37:19them running. But like if you test my VO2 on a
- 37:21bike, I would say that it's probably like maybe A5.
- 37:25It's a 10% difference, if not higher than if you test me
- 37:28running. And I like I, I think having
- 37:32seen the highlights of this test, it was done with him on
- 37:34the bike. Yeah, but I think because he
- 37:37didn't officially announce it, but.
- 37:38Yeah, it was a catch. Up of his screen whilst he's on
- 37:41the bike. I'm sure like the efficiency of
- 37:44like your movement on the bike versus like running economy
- 37:47efficiency or running efficiency, I'm sure there will
- 37:50be some sort of deviation in there.
- 37:53But I think person to person, it's probably quite accurate,
- 37:56especially if you're using. I mean, he's got the
- 37:58state-of-the-art equipment and like his whole team.
- 38:01There's, there's probably very few sessions and I think it's
- 38:04similar with the Acha Binga Brits and that they're running,
- 38:07whether it's on the bike, whether it's in the pool,
- 38:09whether it's on the track where they're not lactate blood
- 38:12testing. So it's like they'll run around
- 38:14the track, do their effort and then some little minion will run
- 38:17over with latex gloves and like prick their hair or get blood.
- 38:21So it's like the Norwegian training methodology is so
- 38:25strict around numbers and training in certain lactate
- 38:28zones, which is really, really fascinating.
- 38:31And it's something that I've played around with a little bit
- 38:34of my training, just just understand it a bit better.
- 38:38The one thing that's shocking, because we have a lactate
- 38:40testing machine, blood lactate machine, the thing that's
- 38:43shocking is how expensive the slides for the blood are.
- 38:48So it's like you can pick up the machine.
- 38:49The machine's quite expensive. It's a couple of £100, but for
- 38:52every slide that you're taking blood off, it's like it's
- 38:56extortionately expensive. And like when you do a test, you
- 39:00end up, it depends what you're doing, I guess.
- 39:02But let's say when we were testing, we're on a bike, we
- 39:05took maybe like 13 to 20 blood samples.
- 39:07I might just, and, and because you can't reuse it because
- 39:10you're using blood and etcetera. So you have to dispose of it
- 39:13really safely and carefully, and you have to be careful with
- 39:15everything that you're doing around it.
- 39:16But it's so expensive, so I'm not surprised.
- 39:19Wild. Yeah.
- 39:20Yeah. Because it's got like a little
- 39:21nano chip reader in it that slots into the machine and there
- 39:24you go. Yeah.
- 39:25And like, sometimes they fainter as well.
- 39:26Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. I've seen that with people that
- 39:28I know that have got like diabetes and have got an
- 39:30emergency one to check and they're like.
- 39:33Have to go again. I have.
- 39:34To go and buy more. Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, it's
- 39:37fascinating though. But the the whole sort of idea
- 39:39about VO2 Max is definitely not like a thing to chase.
- 39:42Having a high VO2 Max means you're fit.
- 39:45But like it's not a definition of fitness per SE.
- 39:49I mean, we've said like he's got the world record in VO2 Max, but
- 39:52he's not the world record holder.
- 39:54He he can win. There's still way more to it.
- 39:56And maybe those other athletes actually have higher VO2 Max as
- 39:59we don't know. But it is a given that if your
- 40:02VO2 Max is that high, you're very fit.
- 40:05Yeah. And I, I think like it's
- 40:07probably the the underlying who's the fittest person.
- 40:10It's probably like the VO2 Max who's the best that racing is
- 40:15very different. So it's like they often give
- 40:18examples around like how do we, how do you kind of explain VO2
- 40:22Max to someone who doesn't understand what it actually is?
- 40:25Because it's like, hey, well, this guy can run a mile really
- 40:27fast. Well, that's a test of speed,
- 40:30right? Over a certain amount of time or
- 40:32distance, I should say. Whereas like your VO2 Max is
- 40:35like a direct proportion of how efficient your body is at
- 40:38transporting and using its oxygen to like fuel the
- 40:40mitochondria, which is what's in the in the tissues basically.
- 40:43Yeah, and, and there's also the over the period of time with
- 40:47training, then yes, your body will adapt to different things.
- 40:49But as a really interesting example, I used to get really,
- 40:52really frustrated when I was young and I would do like some
- 40:55of the summer sports events and I would, I was very like active.
- 40:59I did a lot of training for different sports.
- 41:01It would come to the summer season and there were two guys
- 41:04that would just be off around the back of the bike shed every
- 41:07single day smoking pack after pack after pack of fags.
- 41:10And they would come down on this particular PE day and we would
- 41:15have a 200 meter Sprint and they would wipe the floor with me and
- 41:19be like how, how so much better than you, you're so dead after
- 41:23going up the stairs. And like, I might have had a VO2
- 41:27Max that was higher than theirs, but they were better sprinters.
- 41:30Yeah, they're genetic printers. So they're just a Sprint thing.
- 41:32Yeah, exactly. So like there's a there's a,
- 41:33there's still a big differences between like the, the everyday
- 41:36athlete for different specificities.
- 41:37So. Also, if you look at Christian,
- 41:39you wouldn't go, yeah, he's actually what I typically see it
- 41:43or kind of envisage A triath, a professional Iron Man triathlete
- 41:47to look like. Like he's a little bit shorter.
- 41:49I actually don't know how tall he is.
- 41:51I, I mean, this is probably completely wrong, but he's
- 41:53probably a little bit shorter. He looks a little bit wider set.
- 41:56So it's just like you can't judge a book by its cover.
- 41:59It's just like he's aerobically and very like genetically
- 42:02aerobically, very gifted. And just just, again, like you
- 42:05said, if you're above 60, but you're very, very fit, I, I
- 42:10don't know, because everyone pretty much that I know goes off
- 42:12their watch because we don't have all the money to go and do
- 42:15these tests. And then we don't have enough
- 42:16money to buy more strips even if we had.
- 42:18But I wouldn't therefore say mine's a gospel.
- 42:21I just, it's the only way of tracking I've got.
- 42:25But mine gives me between 52 and 55.
- 42:27So he's almost. Yeah, yeah, I think I've, I've
- 42:31seen my algorithm's got me in a chokehold recently of like
- 42:34people actually going and getting their VO2 Max tested to
- 42:37see the difference between, I saw one test, it was the
- 42:39difference between what their Garmin was saying and what their
- 42:41whoop was saying. And I think the VO2 Max was more
- 42:45accurate on the Garmin than what they were saying on the whoop.
- 42:49But I think the Garmin is biased because it, it only takes
- 42:52running into a carry. Really.
- 42:54OK, so it's like you can sit for hours and hours and hours and
- 42:56you've clicked cardio and you're doing like a low aerobic work on
- 42:59a bike. And it is, it's, well, it's not
- 43:02necessarily contributing to, I mean, you have to be doing VO2
- 43:06Max intervals for it to be contributing to you getting
- 43:07better at VO2 Max. But yeah, I mean, it's, it only
- 43:11takes into account running. But I would be really interested
- 43:13to go and have my VO2 Max tested and then see what it's saying.
- 43:18That's my my watch. Well, if anyone's listening to
- 43:20this that has access to that sort of thing, then do let us
- 43:22know because I would love to be humbled by the test and I would.
- 43:26I've always said, I think if I was doing the test, I would need
- 43:28a crash map because I would like to fall off the back bit off
- 43:31treadmill. In reality, it doesn't happen
- 43:34very often that people do that. So I'd probably just be like,
- 43:36yeah, I'm done. But it's it would be really cool
- 43:39thing and. Yeah, and I could do it versus a
- 43:42maze fit because I've got a maze fit.
- 43:43Watch. You've got Garmin.
- 43:44Exactly. I mean, no, we wasn't really
- 43:46lost in the other video. Or a bit higher than you.
- 43:48What's yours, 58? That's why I actually don't even
- 43:51know how I can find mine unless he tells me I can go over.
- 43:54Yeah, I'm pretty sure mine is like 5354 at the moment.
- 43:58So yeah, fair enough. I don't believe it until I see
- 44:01the real results. I think I'm closer to 95.
- 44:04Before before we move into the game, we need to give an
- 44:11honorable shout out to our sponsor.
- 44:13We do, yeah. New section, new ad read.
- 44:16Indeed. Go on then.
- 44:18I'm just going to read it straight off the screen and once
- 44:21I do that, Angus is going to show you some of the the nice
- 44:23products that we've been sent across to open them actually
- 44:25trying. I'll try and do this away so you
- 44:27can't hear on the microphone this all of.
- 44:29These products are from high style, which have kind of two
- 44:34different options. You've got high socks and then
- 44:35you've got Podium Chasers. Podium Chasers have got the race
- 44:40day essentials, so if you need some kit for your upcoming
- 44:45hybrid races, check out Podium Chasers.
- 44:48The socks that Angus is showing come in all sorts of different
- 44:52colours. They have a nice little grip on
- 44:53the bottom which is going to help you out for things like
- 44:55sled push and tough corners out on the course.
- 44:59What I really like about them is the colours are, I'm sure this
- 45:03has been done on purpose. Lots of popular trainers are
- 45:07those colours and I like to match my my trainers with the
- 45:09colour of my socks. So if you've got the the nice
- 45:12Pima trainers and come in mint blue, you've got that colour as
- 45:14well. But if you would like to pick
- 45:17yourself up a discount on anything that you purchase,
- 45:20which would be good for you. It also helps us out.
- 45:23You use Mindset 15 at checkout for 15% off.
- 45:27So that's Mindset 15, all in capitals for 15% off.
- 45:31Indeed we we look forward to seeing what you guys get make
- 45:34sure you tag us in your orders and deliveries.
- 45:36We will repost, share and we will go and try the same things
- 45:38out. Nice.
- 45:41So nice game time. Let's do it I'm.
- 45:44Going to have to get my. Phone.
- 45:45You feel the game today? I have, yeah.
- 45:47It's it's not really a game. You can't, you can't really lose
- 45:50it, which is nice for you when, but you can be judged highly,
- 45:54that's what. Yeah, maybe.
- 45:56So we're going to do a little bit of game called this or that.
- 45:59So I'm going to give you an option and you have to choose
- 46:03based off what the question is, which person or which thing you
- 46:06would prefer. I'm then going to give you
- 46:08another option and then you just go back and forth.
- 46:11And then we see after a couple of options who you think is the
- 46:14best or what is the best. I like it, I like it.
- 46:16So the first one we're going to kick off with, we're going to
- 46:19choose a Hyrox race partner. So this is the Hyrox race
- 46:23partner edition. OK, Right.
- 46:24So your first options, Jake Paul or Serena Williams, and I have
- 46:30to premise all of these or preface all of these when it's
- 46:34someone who's potentially not competing anymore, assume it's
- 46:37them in their peak. So this is Serena Williams.
- 46:40Love that peak. All right, so Jake Paul or
- 46:42Serena Williams, who are you going for?
- 46:45Can I ask a question off the back of it?
- 46:46Am I like trying to do well in all these sports or am I just
- 46:49picking one for vibe so. What it could be vibes, it could
- 46:52be it's you. You're going to be able to
- 46:53justify at the end however you want.
- 46:56OK, I'm obviously going to go with Serena Williams.
- 47:00I wanted to go Jake Paul just so I could, like, put him in a bin,
- 47:04but yeah. You want to you want a risk in
- 47:07being fit in you. No, although did you did?
- 47:08Have you seen? Sorry, this is a massive tangent
- 47:10and I know we're great for this. Have you seen I think his
- 47:14fiancee? Oh yeah, she won.
- 47:16She's a she's skater. Incredible.
- 47:18Yeah, She, she, she won her main event, which I think it was the
- 47:22record potentially. Video of him but she.
- 47:24She also got a silver medal in second best.
- 47:27She's she's like 10 times world champion.
- 47:29Yeah, she's incredible. She's very famous, very good out
- 47:31of Netherlands. So yeah.
- 47:33So Serena Williams. Serena Williams or Lindsey Vonn.
- 47:38Is this for hierarchs though? You're always the same same
- 47:40thing. Well, this is tough because I
- 47:43think Lindsey Vonn could be a better shout, but she might get
- 47:47her. And Serena Williams is arguably
- 47:50one of the best endurance athletes of all time, based on
- 47:52your reckoning. I didn't say that.
- 47:54Yeah, you do. I say the best athlete.
- 47:56I'm going to say I'm going to stick with Serena Williams.
- 47:58OK, Serena Williams or Michael Jordan.
- 48:02Peak MJ. That's tough.
- 48:04Now I think probably Michael Jordan.
- 48:08OK, MJ or Christian Blumenthal. For hierarchs, Christian
- 48:13Blumenthal. Kristen Blumenthal or Scotty
- 48:15James. Christian Blumenthal.
- 48:17Kristen Blumenthal or Cristiano Ronaldo?
- 48:21Christian Blumenthal. Christian.
- 48:22Now he's going to be telling me to move on.
- 48:24Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:24High. Rights Christian Blumenthal or
- 48:26Paula Radcliffe. Peak Paula.
- 48:28Peak Paula doesn't what she like in carbons because she didn't
- 48:32have a. Mate doesn't get enough credit
- 48:34found incredible she does. OK, Paula Radcliffe, there's
- 48:41method to this thinking OK, this now means I'm doing mixed double
- 48:43S, which means it's quite easier for me.
- 48:45I was probably doing product with Christian and she's.
- 48:48Rapid. Oh, she's rapid.
- 48:50Yeah, yeah, yeah. OK.
- 48:51Paula Radcliffe or Simone Biles. Paula Radcliffe, Paula Radcliffe
- 48:57or Jensen Button. Paula.
- 48:58Radcliffe, Paula. Radcliffe or Josh Kerr.
- 49:04I can't be going back to Josh Kerr after dropping Christian.
- 49:07It's got. I've got to stick with Paula.
- 49:09OK. Paula Radcliffe or Sinead Bent.
- 49:14I think I'd actually go Sinead because I think Paul is a faster
- 49:18runner, but Sinead can actually help me elsewhere as well, and
- 49:20not just bend the other. I help you.
- 49:22She'll do everything. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:24OK. Sinead bent or Jake did.
- 49:26And. Do you want a mixed double S
- 49:31race or do you want a pro DeVos in elite 5th I think.
- 49:34Probably, yeah. I'd race a Sinead.
- 49:37OK, Sinead or Nick Bear. Racing with Nick would be cool,
- 49:43but Sinead? Think of the networking.
- 49:46With me, yeah, I know. Yeah, so true.
- 49:47OK. Sinead or Keely Hodgkinson.
- 49:51Actually, the other reason I go Sinead is I couldn't deal with
- 49:53the number of people showing. Go on more.
- 49:55Yeah, yeah, yeah, I bet. So Sinead or Keely Hodgkinson,
- 49:59oh, Sinead Kee Keeley would actually put me in the hospital.
- 50:05For sure. OK Sinead or Truett Haynes, who
- 50:09just ran what marathon? He ran a marathon somewhere.
- 50:14He ran a 236 in jeans last weekend.
- 50:16God, he's a weapon, isn't he? He'd wear jeans for sure for
- 50:19high rocks. Yeah, and I'd I'd still be in
- 50:22hospital. Just stick with Sinead.
- 50:29Just purely for the cop, OK? I think it would be sick to do a
- 50:32Jean. Tyrox So now we've got the final
- 50:35one, who you're going to stick with, Sinead or Joanna Vitrix.
- 50:44It's really, it's got to be Joanna, because Joanna's the
- 50:46best in the world, yeah. I think so.
- 50:49But I don't think I'd have very much fun, at least like I've met
- 50:53Sinead in real life. She's she's got a personality.
- 50:56I'd not say that Joanna doesn't, but like, she's, she's not
- 51:00British. I don't know if she's that much
- 51:02of A laugh. She's younger.
- 51:04I just, I would honestly just feel really awkward the whole
- 51:07race with Joanna, but I would go faster.
- 51:09Yeah, So you, you selecting very competitive.
- 51:12I'd go with Joanna Fair. OK, well, there's your partner.
- 51:14That was easy. We went we it was a bit
- 51:16emotional through the middle. But we thought that was a
- 51:18journey. All right, so this time this or
- 51:21that same format, but this time things that you'd like to win.
- 51:25So by the end, it's got to be the the, the thing you want to
- 51:27win the most. So I'm going to kick this off
- 51:30the Super Bowl or the 100m Olympic final.
- 51:39I hate myself saying this. They would definitely be the
- 51:43Super Bowl. The coverage would be insane.
- 51:46OK, Super Bowl or Rugby World Cup.
- 51:49Super Bowl. Super Bowl or Football World
- 51:52Cup? This is harder.
- 51:58The soccer World Cup. Yeah, I think the football World
- 52:00Cup. OK, football World Cup or
- 52:02Wimbledon final. Football World Cup.
- 52:06Football World Cup or the Masters?
- 52:13This is the dumbest reasoning. I'd go the masters you have to.
- 52:17I want to know they're. Playing Augusta, watching
- 52:19yourself play well on that course.
- 52:20But the main reason I get a green jacket, Yeah, yeah, green
- 52:24going to be sick. And then like a place in the
- 52:27clubhouse. Yeah, me and Rory hang out.
- 52:30OK Masters or the Iron Man world champs?
- 52:34Masters so I don't have to do the volume of training.
- 52:38Masters or Berlin marathon winner?
- 52:42On a hot day. Yeah, yeah, the hottest day.
- 52:46The hottest day I'd still go masters.
- 52:49OK. Masters or World's strongest
- 52:51man? Masters if you if you're doing
- 52:54World's Strongest Man, you're weird.
- 52:57Masters or the Balandor? Oh, now, now then, I think the
- 53:08Balandor. I think then you're the best.
- 53:10You're the best footballer in the world and that's that's
- 53:12generational. Well then this one's going to be
- 53:14good. Bound or or the Formula One
- 53:16World Championship. That's really.
- 53:24Hard, because you've only got to that position out of daddy's
- 53:28money. True.
- 53:30I think I'd go Formula One. Yeah, Yeah, I think so.
- 53:34Just as from from my personal interest levels and I think
- 53:38you'd get way more out of being a Formula One world champ than
- 53:41you would win the Balandor. Yeah, I think so as well.
- 53:44Because like the number of tries and the calls.
- 53:46Are way more people. Have won the Balandor.
- 53:48I mean, if we look at like Michael Owen, I can't believe
- 53:50that he won the Balandor, but he did and then his career like
- 53:53tailed off badly and no one gives a fuck that he won the
- 53:55Balandor whereas. Like no one knows, Yeah.
- 53:57Yeah, yeah. If you won a drivers world
- 54:00championship, people know. Yeah, yeah, Jensen Button one,
- 54:03do I think. And now it's got into Hyrox.
- 54:06And now he's in Horrocks, you know, and that's what he's
- 54:08remembered like. It happened for the best spots.
- 54:10Yeah, Yeah, that was good. I like let's go again so.
- 54:13OK, Well, if you guys enjoyed that and you want to hear that
- 54:15game further, I think we mentioned in the last episode
- 54:17there's another game that we're going to do soon.
- 54:19I think the price is right. So we might bring that into the
- 54:21next episode. I'll get that prepped for you,
- 54:24but any comments, any queries, anything like that, make sure
- 54:27you are dropping them in the comments section below.
- 54:29Whether that is on Spotify, Apple podcast, if you can do
- 54:32that there, I'm not actually 100% sure.
- 54:34Let's take the sounds that you can.
- 54:35If you can't go to YouTube and drop it there.
- 54:38Otherwise, hit us up on Instagram at mindsets under
- 54:41score podcast. Likewise on TikTok, but make
- 54:44sure you're sending us in your Guam.
- 54:45My gears. It's been a little bit dry
- 54:46recently and there is absolutely no chance that you guys are
- 54:48happy. So if you are happy, you would
- 54:51be. This is the podcast.
- 54:54This is all gone so wrong. I think we're just going to end
- 54:56the. Podcast there.
- 54:56I think that's a good idea, I. Love seeing you guys here.
- 54:59We look forward to seeing you guys next week.
