- 0:00Hey, hey, Yinning at Life Gang. It's Kimberly Roberts, your host
- 0:03here, and I'm so excited to deliver little bits of insight
- 0:10on living your best, most extraordinary life with, of
- 0:15course, yin yoga, traditional Chinese medicine, reflexology
- 0:21and even mindset acts. So thank you so much for
- 0:26pressing play on today's episode.
- 0:29Let's do this well.
- 0:41Hello everybody, and welcome back to the Yinning at Life
- 0:45podcast. Today I got something juicy for
- 0:49you. I want to talk about the
- 0:51epidemic that's happening in this world right now, the real
- 0:56epidemic that's happening after the age of 40, and how to
- 1:02reverse it. This is really an honest
- 1:05conversation I want to have with you.
- 1:07The kind of conversation that I would have if I was just
- 1:11literally sitting beside you on the couch and we were just
- 1:14riffing. Because this is something that
- 1:18seriously needs to be addressed. And it's blowing my mind what
- 1:25I'm seeing happening in the world with people's bodies.
- 1:28And I'm not just talking about over 40.
- 1:31I'm even talking about 20 year olds.
- 1:34But this is just not something that, you know, we can't just
- 1:37shove underneath the under the carpet and hope it's going to go
- 1:40away. This epidemic is happening.
- 1:45The epidemic is that people are aging faster than they need to,
- 1:48even young people. Bodies are shrinking, shoulders
- 1:53are rounding, spines are tightening, hips are locking up.
- 1:58Like, you even look at the kids now and they're walking down the
- 2:01street. They're hunched forward, staring
- 2:03at a device in their hands. Their spine is rounded.
- 2:07Their hands are crippled because they're holding so tight onto
- 2:11these devices. And you know what else is
- 2:14happening? Our minds are getting busier and
- 2:17racing more, more scattered, and we're less present.
- 2:23The end is, is that people are walking around feeling tense,
- 2:28tired, and older than they really are.
- 2:31And here's the thing. And the cosmetic industries are
- 2:34out there pushing, you know, like take these collagen
- 2:37supplements and drink this beverage and use this product
- 2:42when the reality is people are getting older because they're
- 2:48not giving their body and their mind what they truly need.
- 2:53And this is what I want to talk about today.
- 2:56So this faster aging epidemic, like if I look at my mom, who
- 3:02just turned 79, she still lives in the house that I grew up in.
- 3:08She still walks up and down the staircase.
- 3:12She still cleans the house herself.
- 3:15She still does gardening. She exercises every single day.
- 3:19She has this cute little chart. My mom's super old fashioned.
- 3:22OK, so there's no technology. She doesn't even have the
- 3:25Internet. She doesn't even have a cell
- 3:26phone. So she has this little calendar
- 3:29that she has pinned on her fridge.
- 3:32And it's like, you know, Monday is cardio day, Tuesday is soup
- 3:37can lifting day, Wednesday is stretch day, Thursday is
- 3:40meditation. Like, she moves her body every
- 3:44day. She cooks all her own food from
- 3:47scratch. So, you know, it's rare that my
- 3:49mom eats stuff that's like, processed.
- 3:52You know, once in a while, she'll indulge and she'll order
- 3:54herself a piece or something. But she pretty much makes all
- 3:57her own food. Is my mom on any medication?
- 4:02Not a single one. She doesn't even have a family
- 4:05doctor right now because her doctor retired.
- 4:08So for the last six years, she's been basically taking care of
- 4:12herself and has it needed to go to a walk in clinic or a
- 4:16hospital. Because you know what?
- 4:20She's actually aging slower than people who are even 1/4 of her
- 4:25age. Now.
- 4:27If you look around, so many people over 40 are sitting more,
- 4:32they're moving less, they're holding so much more stress in
- 4:36their muscles and living in a constant state of go, go, go
- 4:41where the nervous system is always on sympathetic flight or
- 4:45freight. That constant tension, that
- 4:50tightness you feel in your neck, your hips, your lower back, that
- 4:54isn't just stiffness, it's your body trying to tell you that it
- 4:59needs softness, it needs space, it needs stillness, it needs
- 5:04calm. And your mind, we haven't even
- 5:07talked about that yet, But Oh, my God, with all the noise, the
- 5:11screens, the multitasking, the mind is bombarded and it's
- 5:19becoming more scattered, more anxious and less focused.
- 5:23This is why we forget things. We feel frazzled and we lose our
- 5:27sense of calm. This is why people are, you
- 5:30know, ending up with Alzheimer's and dementia at earlier ages
- 5:35than ever before. But here's the thing, it's
- 5:40reversible. This aging, you can absolutely
- 5:46start to reverse this, or at least at the very least, least
- 5:49start to slow it down. Your body is so intelligent and
- 5:55your mind is so adaptable. They just need some little
- 6:00tools, the right kind of tools. And this is where I want to talk
- 6:04about what these tools are, these tools that I've been
- 6:08using. And just like everybody else, my
- 6:11body is aging too. But I will tell you, practices
- 6:16like yin yoga, breath work, acupressure, reflexology and
- 6:20meditation, these aren't just Wellness trends.
- 6:25They're life lines. They're preventative medicine.
- 6:30Yin Yoga is what helps lengthen the tissues that are all
- 6:34tightening up with age because as you get older, the connective
- 6:38tissue in the fascia in your body stiffens naturally.
- 6:41This is why we start to shrink. Yin yoga helps to keep your
- 6:45joints mobile, your fascia supple, and your posture tall
- 6:52breath work. It actually brings your nervous
- 6:55system out of stress mode so your body can rest and repair
- 7:01and get out of that flight or fright state.
- 7:05Acupressure and reflexology. These are pressure point
- 7:08techniques that help to move stagnant energy.
- 7:11They help your organs and the meridians in your body function
- 7:16better. And meditation, It clears that
- 7:21mental clutter, giving your brain the calm it's literally
- 7:26craving. But the consistency, the secret
- 7:34is consistency in small doses. So most of us do not have an
- 7:41hour every single day to dedicate towards ourselves.
- 7:47But The thing is, is that you know what?
- 7:50The key isn't doing hour long sessions every single day.
- 7:54It's about daily consistent gentle practice which could be
- 7:59even 10/15/20, even 30 minutes. Like most of us are spending way
- 8:07too much time sitting and that's where this faster aging epidemic
- 8:12is starting. I have the most incredible 5 day
- 8:18desk therapy yin yoga series. These are easy to follow
- 8:24practices all under 30 minutes. You don't need any fancy
- 8:29equipment, just 15 to 20 to 30 minutes a day to stretch, to
- 8:35breathe, and to press reset on your mind and on your body.
- 8:40Think of it kind of like brushing your teeth, but it's
- 8:43for your body and your mind. So I want to share with you a
- 8:47simple breath reset because people really underestimate the
- 8:54power and the value of breath work.
- 8:57And honestly, it's something that we all have accessible to
- 9:01us. So let's do a little reset right
- 9:04now together. OK?
- 9:06So as long as you're not driving, if you're driving, come
- 9:08on back to this part of the podcast episode, OK?
- 9:12But if you're somewhere where you can close your eyes and you
- 9:15feel safe to do so, sit up nice and tall.
- 9:19Take a moment to roll your shoulders back.
- 9:22And as your eyes close, take a moment to realize you're in
- 9:28stillness and then start to inhale slowly through your nose
- 9:34for a count of four. At the end of your inhale, I
- 9:39want you to hold the breath in for just a second and then
- 9:44gently exhale through your mouth for six counts.
- 9:50So you're going to inhale for 1234.
- 9:56Hold 21 Exhale 6 54321 again through the nose.
- 10:08Inhale 1234. Hold 1-2 Exhale through the
- 10:19mouth 654321. Do you feel that?
- 10:29You feel your shoulders softened, your jaw relaxed a
- 10:33bit, your mind felt just a little bit clearer for a hot
- 10:36second. You know what that is?
- 10:39That's your nervous system shifting out of stress and back
- 10:43into balance. And that was literally like
- 10:46under a minute here. So could you imagine what a 5 or
- 10:5010 minute breath work sequence could do for you?
- 10:54And I have tons of those on my soulful Yin Yoga app that you
- 10:59can happily tap into. Now, what I want for everybody
- 11:08over 40, but in reality, to be honest with you, even the
- 11:12younger generation is to start to feel strong, open, calm, to
- 11:18sleep well, to feel flexible in their body, and to have an
- 11:23active, joyful life. Not to be shrinking, not to be
- 11:29tightening, not to be rushing through life.
- 11:32Like honestly, that's how we are living now.
- 11:35And I don't see that getting any better.
- 11:38That's why I'm saying this is an epidemic and it takes every
- 11:44single person to start to prioritize their health and
- 11:49well-being, to start to you know what, get rid of this epidemic.
- 11:57But it starts with you, and you deserve to feel good in your
- 12:02body and you also deserve to feel clear in your mind.
- 12:06You also deserve to not be sitting in a hospital or a
- 12:09doctor's office for like, you know, 8 hours before you get
- 12:13seen. You're also worthy of not having
- 12:16to take medication. And the reality is, is that our
- 12:24life isn't about doing more, it's about doing the right
- 12:29things. Things like slowing down,
- 12:35stretching, breathing, doing pressure point therapy, giving
- 12:43yourself the time to unwind. I'm going to tell you a little
- 12:47story here. Few years ago when things were
- 12:50really intense in my life and I was still married to an
- 12:54alcoholic, it used to take Me 2 hours a day.
- 13:03And I was actually at that point fortunate to have two hours a
- 13:07day to practice yen yoga and breath work and meditation.
- 13:14But it would take me two hours to decompress.
- 13:20Like I honestly wouldn't even start to feel myself
- 13:25decompressing till after about an hour.
- 13:28That's how wound up and stressed out I was.
- 13:35Eventually as I walked away from that marriage, I still had a lot
- 13:41of stress in my life because I was living on my own.
- 13:43And I, you know, that was, that was a big shift.
- 13:48And over time I started to feel like I didn't need 2 hours.
- 13:54I was able to wean it down to an hour and I consistently kept
- 14:01practicing. And eventually I found myself
- 14:05after 15 minutes feeling wow, like I feel like really good
- 14:10half an hour. Wow, I feel really good.
- 14:12Even 5 minutes sometimes. Wow, that felt good.
- 14:18And now do I practice 2 hours a day?
- 14:22No, I don't have the time for that.
- 14:25But even on the days where I do, here's the thing.
- 14:28I don't feel in my body, in my mind, like I need 2 hours.
- 14:34I can literally in under 30 minutes, unwind, calm and feel
- 14:41completely nourished in under 30 minutes.
- 14:48And sometimes even in 5 minutes. This is why I have my app.
- 14:58Yes, there's content that is definitely more than 30 minutes.
- 15:03But most of my meditations, all of the breath work, a lot of the
- 15:07yin yoga practices are under 30 minutes.
- 15:12There's even series like I talked about the Five Day Desk
- 15:15Therapy series that's really perfect for people who sit all
- 15:19day. And it might not necessarily
- 15:21mean sitting at a desk. You could be somebody who sits
- 15:25and who drives a lot and travels.
- 15:28Maybe it's also, oh, somebody who you know, does sit at a desk
- 15:34for too many hours a day. Maybe it's for the person who's
- 15:39just feels so exhausted and stressed out and just cannot
- 15:45seem to unwind. This series will open up your
- 15:52body, it will calm your mind, and it'll give you the tools
- 15:55that will help you move through your life with more ease and
- 15:59flexibility and less tension. It's literally the antidote to
- 16:05the fast aging epidemic or epidemic.
- 16:08Pardon me. And it's a simple way to feel
- 16:12like you again. It's inside my app.
- 16:19It's part of the membership. I'll link it all in the show
- 16:23notes for you. There's tons of other series in
- 16:25there as well. There's a 14 day unwind and
- 16:27calm. There's a seven day sleep one.
- 16:31There is a 5 day morning in yoga.
- 16:34If you're somebody who loves to just start your day opening up
- 16:37and feeling spacious and I want you to know something.
- 16:44Age is just a number, but it's how you define it that makes
- 16:50such a big difference. You're not getting old, you're
- 16:58just ready to soften and to breathe and to come back into
- 17:03your body. Whether you're 4060 or 80, I
- 17:10will tell you I have a range of students on my app from like
- 17:15late 20s up to 80 years old and practicing.
- 17:21And the beauty is my app is so easy to use and it's not at all
- 17:29overwhelming. You can literally find what you
- 17:33need in about 30 seconds. Stop this epidemic because you
- 17:45know what? You have the ability to start to
- 17:49reverse and slow down the aging process that's happening in your
- 17:53body and in your mind. Nobody else is going to come and
- 17:59do that work for you. It's all on you.
- 18:04And I'll tell you when you start to open up your body, you start
- 18:08to feel literally the tension peeling away off of you.
- 18:14You're like, Oh my God, I want this all the time.
- 18:20And I promise you, with regular practice, it won't take long
- 18:25before your nervous system and your body can completely reset
- 18:29itself in 15 minutes or less. And on the days where you're
- 18:35like, you know what? I have a whole hour to practice.
- 18:40Awesome. I have tons of practices on the
- 18:43app that are over 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 60 minutes.
- 18:49And again, all of it is geared to help you calm your mind, to
- 18:56help you sleep well, and to feel more flexible and mobile in your
- 19:03body so that you can live an active life and do all the
- 19:10things that are on your bucket list.
- 19:13You can live a joyful life where every single day it's almost
- 19:19like you're pinching yourself because you're like, Oh my God,
- 19:21this is my life. Like I get to do all the things
- 19:24that I want. I get to travel if that's what
- 19:26floats my boat. I get to go out for long walks
- 19:30in the forest if that's what, you know, makes me feel good.
- 19:34The point is, is that when you start taking care of your body
- 19:38and your mind, your body and your mind will give that back to
- 19:43you tenfold. And you'll be knocking off
- 19:47everything on your bucket list, I promise you.
- 19:53So thanks so much for sharing this time with me and for
- 19:56pressing play on this episode. Remember anytime, take a deep
- 20:01breath, roll your shoulders and remember your body loves you and
- 20:07it's always talking to you. You just have to learn to love
- 20:10it back again. And that's where the Soulful Yin
- 20:14Yoga app is going to help you. So have an awesome rest of your
- 20:18day and I will see you next week.
