Transcript
- 0:04Hello and welcome to another episode of the Modern Yin
- 0:09Podcast. I'm Kimberly Roberts of Soulful
- 0:11Yin, and today I want to talk about why you might be more
- 0:16frustrated in the spring. So lately I've been noticing a
- 0:22pattern with a lot of women I work with, both in my
- 0:25reflexology business and online in my yin yoga classes.
- 0:31Lot more irritability, there's a lot more impatience, more
- 0:36tension being held in the body, and it's like nothing dramatic.
- 0:42It's just a shorter fuse, a slightly tighter jaw, a nervous
- 0:51system that feels just a little less forgiving and a lot more
- 0:55bracing. And to be honest with you, at
- 0:59this time of year, as spring rolls around, that is not
- 1:02random. Now let's make the connection of
- 1:07why the spring and why the frustration.
- 1:12It all has to do with traditional Chinese medicine and
- 1:15the liver. So stick around and listen.
- 1:18Grab yourself like maybe your favorite bevy, sit on the couch,
- 1:21grab a blanket, and let's talk about traditional Chinese
- 1:24medicine AKATCM. So in TCM, the springtime is
- 1:32connected to the liver system. It's considered the wood element
- 1:37season in TCM, and the emotion that's associated with the liver
- 1:42is frustration, irritation, anger, resentment.
- 1:49But it's not explosive anger. It's the more like that
- 1:55underlying irritation, the impatience that you just, you
- 1:59know, snap just a little bit too quick.
- 2:03It's also that feeling of being stuck and that sense that you
- 2:09know what things are just not moving the way you want them to.
- 2:13And you see, the liver loves flow.
- 2:16That's what it wants. It doesn't want resistance.
- 2:19It wants energy flowing harmoniously, continuously, and
- 2:25effortlessly. That's basically the liver's
- 2:29role is to keep energy moving smoothly.
- 2:34So think of that energy like water moving through a garden
- 2:38hose. If there's a bunch of kinks in
- 2:40it, AKA there's your impatience, your irritation, your
- 2:44frustration, all of a sudden the water doesn't flow so well.
- 2:48So when that flow gets stuck, again, just think of a garden
- 2:52hose with a kink in it. The water doesn't flow.
- 2:54So we also feel that. We feel it emotionally,
- 2:59physically, mentally, and after a long winter, and I don't know
- 3:06about you, but here where I live, we've had a really long
- 3:10haul of a winter. But when you've had a long haul
- 3:14of a winter and you've been holding things together, it's
- 3:17really common for that kind of stock stagnation energy to start
- 3:21showing up in the spring. So let's talk about how does it
- 3:27show up? So you might notice it like a
- 3:32tighter jaw, your shoulders that just kind of feel heavy or
- 3:36tense. You've got digestion discomfort,
- 3:43mood swings that just feel a little kind of like out of
- 3:47character. Or you just kind of have a low
- 3:51grade frustration that just seems to come out of nowhere.
- 3:54And you're like, I can't pinpoint why, but I just feel
- 3:56this way. And most of us try to just
- 4:00manage it mentally. We tell ourselves, oh, you know
- 4:04what? I'm a little in pain.
- 4:05Let me be patient. Let me calm down.
- 4:09Let me just push through it. But that's just not mental.
- 4:15That stuck energy that you have, it's physiological.
- 4:20Your body is holding energy that wants to literally move.
- 4:24It's like you've got the kink in the garden hose and you're
- 4:27holding onto it, but you don't want to get the kink out.
- 4:31So then the water doesn't flow. This is exactly what's happening
- 4:34to us. And then it creates resistance,
- 4:36and the resistance is not your liver's friend.
- 4:42So if we spin this from a modern Knian perspective, this is where
- 4:49modern yen and its approach is very different.
- 4:54We don't try to force the emotion away, we createspace
- 4:59instead for the body to release it through stillness, through
- 5:04breath, through gentle, consistent practices that help
- 5:09your nervous system soften, even if that's like 5 minutes a day.
- 5:15Because when your body starts to soften, your energy starts to
- 5:19move again. Again, just keep coming back to
- 5:21that garden hose analogy. And when the energy starts to
- 5:26move, frustration naturally begins to dissipate.
- 5:30It even happens like say, do you go to the gym and you move your
- 5:34body? You feel stuck before and then
- 5:37afterwards you're like, oh, I feel so much better because I
- 5:40moved again. It's like it's energy or the
- 5:43body is always moving energy through or it's trying to.
- 5:48OK, so when spring comes and the irritation starts to brew and
- 5:54this is when this is the time of expansion and growth, we want to
- 6:01move into that energy. And this is exactly why I
- 6:05created the Seven Day Spring Liver Reset inside the Soulful
- 6:09Yin Yoga app. It is seriously simple.
- 6:12It's seven days of yen yoga, breath work, acupressure, and
- 6:17it's specifically geared for this time of year.
- 6:20There's also ATCM master class that talks all about the liver,
- 6:25about emotions, about energy. And it's also, this program is
- 6:31to help the body release bent up frustration, built up
- 6:34frustration and irritation and to basically reset your nervous
- 6:39system. It's not intense because we
- 6:42don't want intense when it comes time to deliver, but it's
- 6:46consistent supportive practices. You get lifetime access to this
- 6:52and all the future updates. So every year I run this program
- 6:56and I keep refining it and it gets better.
- 6:59So if you're feeling more irritable, if you're feeling
- 7:02more tense or just a little stuck, this is a really
- 7:06beautiful time to support your body and your nervous system
- 7:10differently. The reset starts March 20th, and
- 7:14you're welcome to join us. No pressure.
- 7:18I want to leave you with this. Frustration isn't something to
- 7:21fix because you know what? You're not broken if you're
- 7:25frustrated. We have human experiences and we
- 7:29have emotions. We're just meant to move through
- 7:32them. And it's often, you know what,
- 7:35when you feel stuck, it's just your body asking, can we please
- 7:39move and release something? Can we Createspace?
- 7:43Can we find the release? And sometimes the most powerful
- 7:47way to create that is through stillness.
- 7:50This is what I call modern yen, where stillness does the real
- 7:54work. So thank you so much for
- 7:57pressing play on today's episode.
- 8:01I'll see you in the next one. Have an awesome rest of your
- 8:03day, yeah?
