- 0:00Friend, what if the reason you're feeling overwhelmed isn't because you're doing too
- 0:05much?
- 0:07What if it's because you've become available for too much?
- 0:11Not all at once.
- 0:13This happens slowly.
- 0:15You stay up a little later because it's summer, or you move your workout to fit everyone else's
- 0:20schedule, or you tell yourself, I'll take that walk later, or you postpone your quiet
- 0:25time.
- 0:26You just keep saying, I'll get to it tomorrow.
- 0:28And then one day you look up and wonder, when did I stop taking care of myself?
- 0:34So here's what I've realized.
- 0:35The problem isn't that we're trying to love our families well, because we're doing that.
- 0:40The problem is that little by little, we've become available for everything except the
- 0:45things that help us become the woman God has called us to be.
- 0:49So today I want to share a simple exercise that has helped me rethink this entire summer.
- 0:55It's helped me stop feeling scattered, and stop feeling guilty, and start making some
- 1:00intentional decisions again.
- 1:04If you're tired of people pleasing, caring too much, and wondering why peace still feels
- 1:09so hard to hold on to, you're in the right place.
- 1:13Hi, I'm Lori, mom, former people pleaser, and your boundaries coach.
- 1:18Here we talk about how to protect your peace, set healthier boundaries, and get clear on
- 1:23what actually matters, so that you can build a life that feels lighter, calmer, and more
- 1:29satisfying.
- 1:30So let's stop the chaos for a minute, moms, catch our breath, and get into this next episode.
- 1:36Hey, friend, welcome back to Healthy Boundaries for Moms.
- 1:42I am your host, Lori Grimes, and today we are talking about the hidden costs of being
- 1:48too available.
- 1:50This episode is coming straight to you from my own life.
- 1:55So I shared with you guys that when summer started, I had a plan.
- 1:58I was going to work out whenever my son and his friends decided they wanted to go to the
- 2:03gym.
- 2:04They had a decent plan of going, and it sounded like a great idea because we could just knock
- 2:08it all out together, right?
- 2:11But as the weeks went on, I realized these boys were crazy.
- 2:16Their schedule was all over the place.
- 2:18It was super unpredictable.
- 2:20Some days they wanted to go early.
- 2:23Some days they want to go later.
- 2:25Other days they just decided not to go at all.
- 2:27So I found myself just waiting around, trying to fit one of my biggest priorities into someone
- 2:34else's schedule, 14-year-old boys nonetheless.
- 2:39So before I knew it, my workouts were inconsistent.
- 2:42My walks in the park, which I absolutely love, they are life-giving to me.
- 2:47They weren't happening as nearly as often as I would like, and my bedtime, y'all, had
- 2:53gotten much later because the kids were staying up later, and my step count, it was just not
- 3:00where I wanted it to be.
- 3:01So then it just hit me.
- 3:03I didn't need a better planner, and I didn't need more motivation.
- 3:06I had the motivation.
- 3:08I just needed to renegotiate the commitments I made for this season.
- 3:13So one of the biggest problems is that we stay vague.
- 3:18What I mean by that is we carry all our commitments, our responsibilities, our expectations, our
- 3:25projects, things that we worry about.
- 3:27We just carry it around in our head, right?
- 3:30We know we're busy.
- 3:31We know something is feeling off.
- 3:33We begin to feel behind, but we can't always explain why.
- 3:38The truth is we can't renegotiate what we haven't identified, and we can't fix what
- 3:43we decide not to look at, okay?
- 3:46So one thing I've been realizing this summer is that vagueness can become a form of people-pleasing.
- 3:54So when I'm not clear about what's important to me, it's much easier to just adjust my
- 4:00life around everyone else's needs, my kids, my friends, my husband, and just fix my life
- 4:07around their wants, their wishes, and their schedules.
- 4:10And I keep saying yes because I haven't decided what needs to be a no.
- 4:15I keep moving my priorities because I am not protecting them, and I keep waiting to see
- 4:21what everyone else is doing before I decide what I'm going to do.
- 4:26And being vague about our priorities often means that someone else's priorities will
- 4:31take that space.
- 4:33It will fill that open space.
- 4:35So guys, before we make any decisions, we have to get everything out of our heads and
- 4:40onto paper.
- 4:41We have to write down every commitment, every responsibility, every expectation that we
- 4:46have in every project.
- 4:49So anything that is taking up our mental space.
- 4:53Because I want to tell you, clarity, it's a gift.
- 4:57It's a gift you are giving yourself because it removes so much of the mental load and
- 5:01the stress we don't even realize that we're carrying.
- 5:04And it's a gift to the people that we love because they no longer have to guess what
- 5:09is important to us.
- 5:11And it's a gift to our future selves because once we can clearly see what our commitments
- 5:16are, we can make intentional decisions instead of reactionary ones, right?
- 5:22And clarity, guys, it's not selfish.
- 5:25It is stewardship.
- 5:27So once everything is out on paper, I think there are only three decisions we need to
- 5:31make with them.
- 5:33One is keep it and schedule it.
- 5:35So get it on the calendar.
- 5:36Where do you want it?
- 5:37Where should it go?
- 5:38Because if it's important, we need to give it priority, not just hope it happens, right?
- 5:44Number two, release it or postpone it.
- 5:48So maybe it's a great goal, but it's just not the right one for the season.
- 5:53Give yourself permission to let it wait and put it off.
- 5:56Okay, number three, renegotiate the terms.
- 6:00This one has been big for me this summer.
- 6:03So back to the workout plan.
- 6:05My original plan, again, was to go whenever my son and his friends went to the gym.
- 6:10Sounded great.
- 6:11It was working for a time.
- 6:13And then all of a sudden their schedule was changing all the time.
- 6:16And I realized I was just waiting on everyone else.
- 6:18And I was sometimes not even getting to the workout.
- 6:22So I renegotiated it.
- 6:24I didn't quit exercising, guys.
- 6:27I didn't decide that my health didn't matter.
- 6:31I simply just changed the terms.
- 6:33Now, I've decided to protect my mornings and I do my workout now and take my walk in the
- 6:39park before the rest of the day's activities begin.
- 6:42Because mornings give me the best chance of protecting my non-negotiables for the day,
- 6:48begins filling it up with everybody else's needs.
- 6:50So sometimes we don't need to abandon our priorities.
- 6:54We need to just renegotiate how we're going to accomplish them this season.
- 7:00So as I was thinking about this, three passages kept coming to mind.
- 7:03Proverbs 4, 25 through 27, it says, let your eyes look straight ahead.
- 7:09Fix your gaze directly before you.
- 7:12Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all of your ways.
- 7:18Do not turn to the right or to the left.
- 7:20I love this picture because it's about focus.
- 7:23God isn't asking us to look in every direction or chase every opportunity.
- 7:28He's telling us to pay careful attention to the path he's placed in front of us.
- 7:33So when we're constantly adjusting our lives and we're basically moving everything around
- 7:40others expectations, it's easy to lose sight of the path that God has called us to walk.
- 7:45So also I thought about Ephesians 5, 15 through 17, and it says, be very careful then how
- 7:53you live.
- 7:54Not as unwise, but as wise.
- 7:56Making the most of every opportunity.
- 7:59Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.
- 8:04So we need to be making the most of our time and that doesn't mean fill every minute of
- 8:09every day.
- 8:10That's not what I'm saying.
- 8:11It just means make wise, intentional decisions about what deserves your time moms, what deserves
- 8:18your energy and your attention this season.
- 8:21And sometimes wisdom is just looking like saying yes, but sometimes it looks like just
- 8:26saying not now.
- 8:28Or it looks like just renegotiating the way that we are doing something.
- 8:32So in Psalm 90, 12, it says, teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
- 8:38Our days are a gift from God.
- 8:41Our time is limited.
- 8:43Our energy is limited.
- 8:45We know that.
- 8:46Instead of feeling guilty that we can't do everything, we can ask God for wisdom and
- 8:51to help us choose what matters most.
- 8:53That's really what healthy boundaries are about.
- 8:55It's not about being rigid guys.
- 8:58It's about becoming wise stewards of the life that God has entrusted to us.
- 9:02So we need to structure our flexibility.
- 9:06What do I mean by that?
- 9:07That probably sounds weird and it sounds backwards, but I think we need to structure our flexibility.
- 9:14Structure doesn't have to be rigid because we know we've got our kids at home and there's
- 9:19stuff that we're doing that's different, but flexibility without structure is just chaos.
- 9:25And we decide ahead of time where we're going to be flexible instead of letting flexibility
- 9:31just take over our entire lives.
- 9:34So that could look like Friday and Saturday nights.
- 9:37Maybe those are your flexible nights, or maybe just afternoons are for your spontaneous trips
- 9:42to the pool, or in your mornings are protected like I do.
- 9:46I protect it for my quiet time, my workout, my walk, or your work.
- 9:51Maybe you're flexible about when you exercise, but you're not flexible about whether you
- 9:56exercise.
- 9:57So you know you want to, but you're flexible on the timing.
- 10:01Every season needs a few non-negotiables.
- 10:04Those are the habits that keep us healthy and investing in our future selves.
- 10:08And it's the routines that keep us grounded and the priorities that help us to love God
- 10:13and love our families and care for these amazing bodies God's given us and the minds He's entrusted
- 10:21to us.
- 10:22So this week I want you to grab one sheet of paper.
- 10:25Get everything out of your heads, moms.
- 10:28Get it out of your head and on a paper.
- 10:30Every commitment, responsibility, every expectation you have that you haven't quite articulated,
- 10:37every project, then work through these three decisions we talked about today.
- 10:41Keep it and schedule it, release it or postpone it, or renegotiate the terms for the season.
- 10:46So friend, making your priorities clear is a gift to yourselves and to the people that
- 10:52you love.
- 10:53You don't have to be available for everything, my friends, to be fully present to what matters
- 10:59most.
- 11:00So until next time, remember that healthy boundaries aren't about building walls.
- 11:04They're about building a life with peace, purpose, and margin, one intentional choice
- 11:10at a time.
