- 0:00Hey, hey, Yinning at Life Gang. It's Kimberly Roberts, your host
- 0:03here, and I'm so excited to deliver little bits of insight
- 0:11on living your best, most extraordinary life with, of
- 0:16course, yin yoga, traditional Chinese medicine, reflexology
- 0:21and even mindset acts. So thank you so much for
- 0:27pressing play on today's episode.
- 0:30Let's do this. Hey there, Yinning at Life Gang.
- 0:38It is Kimberly Roberts here, and I am back for another episode.
- 0:44So I want to talk about the art of slowing the F down, finding
- 0:51calm and learning to trust the wisdom that is already inside of
- 0:56you. And I will tell you when you're
- 0:58over the age of 40, you're like done with the hustling, the
- 1:06being super stressed out and not trusting yourself.
- 1:12Like who is done with that phase, right?
- 1:16I am, and I'm sure there's lots of you out there that are
- 1:20listening to this, thinking, yeah, I'm either there or you
- 1:24know what? I kind of want to be there and I
- 1:27need just a little bit of help. So go ahead, pour yourself a cup
- 1:32of tea or a latte or a kombucha, whatever floats your boat.
- 1:37Find your cozy corner on your couch and give me a hot few
- 1:43minutes here to talk about this subject stillness, why it feels
- 1:51so hard and even uncomfortable. And this is something that
- 1:58actually comes up a lot in my yin yoga classes that I teach on
- 2:02my app, the Soulful Yin Yoga App.
- 2:05And it's also conversations that I have with some of my patients
- 2:08in my reflexology business. And I'll tell you that you know
- 2:13what, it's OK. We're really, we're really OK
- 2:24with this. And I'm going to explain why
- 2:27stillness feels so hard and it's so uncomfortable because you
- 2:32might not know this yet, but the reason why stillness feels so
- 2:38hard has nothing to do with you not being good at relaxing.
- 2:43It's not that your mind is broken or that you're too busy
- 2:48or that you just don't have that quote UN quote right mindset.
- 2:54It has nothing to do with any of that.
- 2:57You know what it has to do with your nervous system, that
- 3:02beautiful, intelligent body and nervous system that's always
- 3:09just trying to protect you. OK.
- 3:12And I'm going to dive a little deeper in this so you can get
- 3:14some context. You see, we've spent so many
- 3:21years in motion and especially if you're over 40, you've really
- 3:25done it. The rushing, the doing, the
- 3:28producing, the caring for everybody else, right?
- 3:34The hustle culture, like I talked about that a lot in one
- 3:38of my previous podcast episodes. It was all about how to break
- 3:43free from the hustle culture, right?
- 3:45Especially when you're over 40. Because let's face it, at this
- 3:49point in life, we've had a lot of practice and we've pretty
- 3:54much nailed it to a tee on the hustling, right?
- 4:01And that kind of movement becomes the way we feel all the
- 4:07time. I got to push.
- 4:09I got to force. I got to do.
- 4:11I got to do, and I got to do. And so when we first stop, when
- 4:18we actually take time to rest or we drop into stillness, whether
- 4:21it's in a yin yoga class, whether it's doing breath work
- 4:26or meditation, it can actually feel unsafe to your nervous
- 4:31system at first. Yeah, your nervous system is
- 4:34going to go, whoa, wait a minute.
- 4:37We're slowing down. We're pausing, We're getting
- 4:40still. What's this all about?
- 4:43Not used to that danger, right? Because again, your nervous
- 4:48system is there to protect you and it doesn't, like, change.
- 4:55And so it thinks that what we're doing, being still and pausing
- 5:01is actually a bad thing at first.
- 5:04Let me just tell you that at first, OK?
- 5:06Stick with me here because you're going to get it.
- 5:10That stillness starts to bring up everything we've been holding
- 5:14down and shoving into ourselves. Emotions, fatigue, thoughts we
- 5:21haven't processed. It's kind of like we've just
- 5:23been sweeping all the dust under the carpet, right?
- 5:28And all of a sudden it's like you're looking at the carpet and
- 5:30there's this massive bump in it and you're like, what the F is
- 5:33this? And so all of that feels so
- 5:38uncomfortable, and it takes courage, and it's uncomfortable,
- 5:43so we don't want to do it. But here's the thing.
- 5:47The only way you're going to train your nervous system from
- 5:51feeling unsafe is to actually start being still more often.
- 5:56It's like, I'm going to give you a completely different analogy
- 5:58here. You're looking at your biceps
- 6:01and you're like, yeah, I could really, I really want some
- 6:06defined biceps, right? Like I want some strength.
- 6:08I want to be able to like, you know, like curl my bicep in and
- 6:13see that little lump, right? That little bump and that line,
- 6:16right? We all want that line.
- 6:19I know I do anyway. But if I just stare at the
- 6:26weights and I don't do anything, or if I pick them up and I go,
- 6:30oh, no, no, no, this is going to be too hard to put them back
- 6:32down, guess what? Am I going to get to find
- 6:34biceps? No, so I start, I pick him up
- 6:39and maybe the first few times I like, you know, do you know, 8
- 6:44wraps, 3 times, like 2 lbs each, right?
- 6:48And I'm just starting. I'm building momentum, right?
- 6:52Eventually it starts to get easier and easier and easier.
- 6:57And then I start to see change. I'm looking at my bicep and I'm
- 7:00like, what? Look at that.
- 7:03There's a little bit of a definition happening there.
- 7:07And so it's the same thing with training your bicep is the same
- 7:13thing as training your mind that stillness is safe.
- 7:16Training your nervous system, that stillness is safe.
- 7:20So I want to talk a little bit about a personal story, a
- 7:23personal reflection of mine. So the first time that I ever
- 7:29did yen, it was quote UN quote by accident because I thought I
- 7:33was going to my regular Ashtanga class, but it changed and I
- 7:37didn't realize it. And so I'm in the class and I'm
- 7:40like looking around and I'm like, why is everybody just
- 7:44sitting there? And then the teacher walks in
- 7:47and it's like, OK, and now we're going to, you know, like she
- 7:49starts the class and she's like, yeah.
- 7:52And we're going to start with Tadpole.
- 7:53And I'm like tadpole. I'm like, I'm thinking to
- 7:58myself, this is Ashtanga series one.
- 8:00We're supposed to be standing up here.
- 8:03I thought, well, it's a substitute teacher.
- 8:05Maybe she's just, you know, like starting off things a little
- 8:08different. So I was like, I'm going to roll
- 8:10with it, right? I'm in the class.
- 8:11I'm not going to get up and leave.
- 8:12That's just rude. So I'm like, OK, I'll just go
- 8:15with it. So there we are.
- 8:18We're in tadpole, AKA widening child's pose.
- 8:22And it's like, you know, a couple of minutes and I'm like,
- 8:25what the heck's happening? Like 2 minutes here, Like hello,
- 8:28no, 3 minutes rolls around. Finally 5 minutes rolls around,
- 8:31we come out and I'm like, OK, I guess she just wanted to settle
- 8:34us in. Next thing I know, we're moving
- 8:36into another yen pose and another yen pose and another yen
- 8:39pose. And I'm like, OK, I'm clearly
- 8:44not in an Ashtanga class. I don't know what this is.
- 8:47So you know what? I'm just going to roll with it.
- 8:51So I thought, I really don't know what this is all about, but
- 8:55I'm going to embrace being still for whatever length of time it
- 8:59is because it seems like we're holding these poses like
- 9:02forever. So I allowed the stillness even
- 9:08though I had no like concept, no idea what was happening.
- 9:12I'm like, OK, I'm here. I'm, I'm, I'm going to be here.
- 9:20And after a few more poses, I was like, I had this moment.
- 9:25I call it like a light bulb moment.
- 9:26I was like, Oh my God, I don't know if I can just be here.
- 9:32Like everything in me wanted to move.
- 9:36I wanted to fix. I wanted to fidget, I wanted to
- 9:39check my watch. Like I wanted to look around the
- 9:42room. It was like I wanted to do
- 9:47everything but be still. And because I didn't know what
- 9:51kind of class I was in, that just added to the complexity of
- 9:54like, why am I being still? Why can't I move around now?
- 9:59Keep in mind I had been practicing yoga for about 10
- 10:03years at that point, and I never did yen before.
- 10:07So I was always doing like Ashtanga.
- 10:10I was doing vinyasa flow or like, you know, like a like a
- 10:15gentle half a class or something.
- 10:17I even did power yoga. I did hot yoga.
- 10:19So I never did yen. So I was like, I don't even know
- 10:21what this stillness is about. This is like disturbing me,
- 10:24right? And then it hit me.
- 10:28I was like, wait a minute. This isn't about my body being
- 10:32tight. Oh, I'm starting to feel things
- 10:37like emotions are coming up, thoughts are coming up.
- 10:41And I realized, and this was probably about like an hour into
- 10:46the 90 minute class because back then classes were all 90
- 10:50minutes. And I was like, Oh my God, I'm
- 10:53holding on to so much. I'm like, this is exhausting.
- 10:59I'm exhausted. I'm tired of holding on all
- 11:02these thoughts, all this stress, all this anxiety, all this
- 11:06worry, all this anger. Like I was in an abusive
- 11:10marriage at the time to an alcoholic.
- 11:12And let me tell you, between trying to navigate him and help
- 11:17him try to get better. And then of course, I was in the
- 11:20corporate world back then with an extremely high stress job,
- 11:25and I was like, I was holding onto a lot.
- 11:29And in that moment I realized stillness isn't passive.
- 11:35There's nothing about it being passive.
- 11:39It's about deeply and quietly being powerful.
- 11:45It is a deep, quiet, powerful concept.
- 11:51Stillness. It's that moment when we can
- 11:55stop running from ourselves and we can start remembering who we
- 12:00actually are beneath all that noise.
- 12:03Right between all the chaotic moments, the stillness allows us
- 12:09to come back and go. I know who I am.
- 12:15And you know what? I was hooked after that.
- 12:19And I've been practicing yin now for like over 30 years.
- 12:25I've been teaching yin for like 25 years because I will tell you
- 12:29after that one practice I was hooked.
- 12:33And I was like, I want to practice more, but I was like,
- 12:38this is what I want to teach. And I was already a teacher at
- 12:41the time, but I was teaching like hatha and flow and hot yoga
- 12:46and I was like, that's not what I want to teach anymore.
- 12:49I want to teach yen, so here's a little emotional insight for
- 12:57you. You might not know this yet.
- 13:00In fact, I'm pretty sure most of you don't know this yet, and
- 13:03that's OK. But the reason why stillness
- 13:06feels so hard is because it's the space where healing begins.
- 13:14It's like your body is kind of quietly whispering to you.
- 13:18I finally have your attention now, and I'll tell you when you
- 13:23get to that space, that energy, that vibration, that frequency
- 13:27of that, it can bring up tears, restlessness, boredom, right?
- 13:38And it's all OK because this is all part of the unwinding.
- 13:43And let me put a little bit of traditional Chinese medicine
- 13:47spin on this for you, OK? We say in Chinese medicine that
- 13:53yin energy is the energy of stillness, coolness, reflection,
- 13:59and it balances our Yang energy, the doing, the moving, the
- 14:02achieving, right? Yin and Yang, you need both.
- 14:07But the reality is in our world and in this hustle culture, most
- 14:13of us are living on Yang OverDrive.
- 14:16It's like, where is the yin? I'm all Yang and trust me, I
- 14:20know that vibe. I know that vibe of all Yang,
- 14:25right? And I think honestly, I swear to
- 14:30God, like I do truly believe in a higher power.
- 14:33So universe, God, source, whatever you want to call it.
- 14:37That day I landed in that yin class and I didn't know it.
- 14:43That was a gift from the universe, a gift from the
- 14:47universe that was not only meant for me to experience, but for me
- 14:51to share with other people and to impact thousands of people
- 14:58over the age of 40. To realize that you know what,
- 15:01it's time to start getting out of that Yang energy, and it's
- 15:06time to start coming into your yin energy.
- 15:11And with that time and the more often you're there, it's going
- 15:15to start to feel like you're coming back home to yourself.
- 15:21So if you've ever found yourself lying in Shavasana thinking, oh
- 15:26God, I can't stop my mind. I'm thinking about this.
- 15:30Is Shavasana over yet? Like, or you're maybe you're
- 15:34sitting in meditation and it's the same thing, right?
- 15:37You're like, I just want to get up and I want to do something
- 15:40right. There's nothing wrong with you.
- 15:43You're not being bad at being still.
- 15:45You're just learning to trust the quiet again.
- 15:49And you're you're learning to basically embrace the stillness.
- 15:55And every time that you choose to pause, even for like 1
- 16:00mindful breath, OK, you're teaching your nervous system
- 16:05that it's OK that it is safe to rest.
- 16:09Just like when you're training your biceps.
- 16:12That's the real practice here. So today, I invite you to take
- 16:19one small yin moment for yourself.
- 16:23Maybe you're going to take 3 slow breaths with your eyes
- 16:26closed before you open up that phone first thing in the
- 16:30morning. Because let's face it, the
- 16:31minute we, well, a lot of us, we don't even get out of bed.
- 16:34The phone's right beside the bed, right?
- 16:36We pick up the phone first. So try taking 3 slow, mindful
- 16:41breaths, or try sitting with your tea or your latte or your
- 16:46coffee and actually tasting it. Not just like hoovering it down
- 16:51your mouth to get that quick shot of like caffeine, but
- 16:55actually mindfully enjoy it. Because you might not know this
- 17:02yet, but those tiny quiet moments are where you're
- 17:06starting to reclaim your calm, your clarity, your courage, and
- 17:11your stillness. And that's what this journey,
- 17:15this yinning at life is all about.
- 17:17Learning to balance your yin and your Yang.
- 17:21Stepping out of the culture of hustling and doing more and
- 17:25spending more time discovering who you are truly meant to be.
- 17:30And let's face it, after 40, absolutely Hallelujah.
- 17:37We want this, right? So take a deep breath in and a
- 17:45long breath out. Until next time, remember, try
- 17:52taking a couple more breaths. Be gentle with yourself and
- 17:55remember this calm isn't something you find, it's
- 17:59something that you allow. There is something that is so
- 18:05incredible that's happening in the Soulful Yin world right now.
