- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for March 5th, 2026 When You're 64 Building the Marriage
- 0:05You'll Want in Retirement Can't do a playlist week without a Beatles song, so today, When I'm 64.
- 0:12The Beatles sing, Will You Still Need Me? Will You Still Feed Me? When I'm 64?
- 0:17It's a cute lyric, until you realize plenty of couples reach their 60s feeling
- 0:21more like roommates than spouses.
- 0:23Will You Still Want Me When We Get Older? There's a more important question.
- 0:27Are you doing things that keep your marriage alive so your marriage feels alive when you're older?
- 0:32If you want a good marriage when you retire, you have to have a good marriage
- 0:35now. You have to stay connected.
- 0:37Keep talking. Keep doing life together. And make intimacy of all kinds a high priority.
- 0:44Doing this is difficult as the kids get older. The late 30s and 40s are usually very busy years.
- 0:50When you have too much to do, it's tempting to think your marriage is good and coast a bit.
- 0:54But marriage is like going up the down escalator. You have to work just to not
- 0:58lose ground. Coast for very long, and your marriage will suffer.
- 1:02Common interests need to be cultivated before you retire. I've seen couples
- 1:06realize when their children all moved away that the kids were the only thing they had in common.
- 1:11In theory, you can work to find common interests at 60, but I assure you that
- 1:15it's very difficult, and some couples who have tried it that way have failed.
- 1:19The Beatles go on, doing the garden, digging the weeds.
- 1:22Who could ask for more? What you do together need not be exciting or expensive
- 1:26Sharing the simple things can be enjoyable and satisfying More music Every summer
- 1:32we can rent a cottage In the aisle of right,
- 1:34if it's not too dear We shall scrimp and save We shall scrimp and save Of course,
- 1:40some of what you want to enjoy may cost a bit Saving for a shared dream is always
- 1:44a good thing Be it a once-in-a-lifetime vacation or a yearly trip One more lyric Mine forevermore,
- 1:52Forevermore starts now Are you building a solid forevermore?
- 1:55What can you start doing together?
- 1:58Gardening, walking, cooking, church, serving, day trips, board games,
- 2:02DIY, volunteering, learning a skill, or maybe saving towards a dream?
- 2:07This is Paul reminding you that doing marriage together is doing marriage well.
