- 0:00Hey, hey, Yinning at Life Gang. It's Kimberly Roberts, your host
- 0:03here, and I'm so excited to deliver little bits of insight
- 0:11on living your best, most extraordinary life with, of
- 0:16course, Yin yoga, traditional Chinese medicine, reflexology,
- 0:21and even mindset acts. So thank you so much for
- 0:27pressing play on today's episode.
- 0:30Let's do this. Hello, everybody, and welcome
- 0:34back to the Yinning at Life podcast where we are talking
- 0:37about all things Yin yoga, traditional Chinese medicine,
- 0:41finding calm and balance in your beautiful 40s and plus body.
- 0:47So today I want to have a chat. I want to riff on something that
- 0:51many of us experience twice a year, the time change, like
- 0:58first of all, really would do. We still have to deal with this.
- 1:02Like technology has evolved substantially.
- 1:06So I don't understand why twice a year we have to change the
- 1:10clocks so everybody always thinks, oh, yay, fall back.
- 1:14I get an extra hour of sleep. Woo Hoo.
- 1:17In the spring, it's like this blows because I lose an hour.
- 1:22But here's the thing, regardless whether we're falling back or
- 1:27we're springing forward, it's weird.
- 1:31We feel off, we feel foggy and sometimes we're like, I don't
- 1:37really understand why this is happening.
- 1:42So I want to talk about the why, why this is happening.
- 1:46This kind of extra tired, but can't sleep kind of energy.
- 1:51The like there's something happening after the time change,
- 1:53but I don't really get it. Like my digestion is weird.
- 1:57My sleep is cycle is off. Like my emotions are, you know,
- 2:01all over the place. Like I'm telling you right now,
- 2:04you're not imagining it. The time change really does
- 2:08affect your body, not just your sleep, but it affects your
- 2:12organs, your emotions, and your overall energy rhythm in your
- 2:16body. So grab yourself a latte, get
- 2:19cozy, and let's unpack this. OK, so what's really happening
- 2:27when the clocks shift? I mean, it's an hour.
- 2:30So we think, OK, it's only an hour.
- 2:32Like how much of a difference can that make?
- 2:34Like it's not like I'm traveling halfway across the world and
- 2:36there's like an 18 hour time change that I get, but one hour.
- 2:41But here's the thing, and this is all stemming in traditional
- 2:45Chinese medicine, Meridian theory, OK, so when our clocks
- 2:49shift our internal rhythm, OK, what Chinese medicine calls our
- 2:55body Meridian clock, OK, we all have this internal Meridian
- 2:59clock and it gets a little scrambled up.
- 3:03So in traditional Chinese medicine, or I'm going to refer
- 3:07to it as TCM moving forward here, every organ has a 2 hour
- 3:11window when its energy peaks, OK?
- 3:15Think of it like a car on a highway.
- 3:18Just stay with me here, OK? So for example, I want to talk
- 3:22about three major organs, OK? Especially when it comes time to
- 3:27the time change, liver, lungs and kidneys.
- 3:30So between 1:00 and 3:00 AM, that is when our liver is at its
- 3:35energy peak, meaning it is traveling down the highway, OK?
- 3:40It's processing emotions like frustration and anger.
- 3:43It's dealing with like excess hormones in the body.
- 3:46It's filtering out all the toxins.
- 3:50And between that 2 hour period, it should be cruising along the
- 3:54highway, not hitting traffic jams.
- 3:57OK? And I'm going to talk about how
- 4:00that works. Just bear with me.
- 4:02We're going to go to the next one.
- 4:03Lungs 3:00 to 5:00 AM. Now our lung Meridian, our lungs
- 4:09are lit linked to grief, sadness and letting go, which especially
- 4:15at this time of year in the fall, we have a really hard time
- 4:20with the sadness and the letting go.
- 4:22Because in a lot of countries, like, you know where I am right
- 4:26now in Canada, like, you know, the, the trees are losing their
- 4:30leaves and everything is getting kind of bleak.
- 4:33And it's, you know, like the days are shorter and there's
- 4:35less sunlight. So for some people this can feel
- 4:40like everything is dying, right? And it can have a really heavy
- 4:44energy around it, especially when we don't have a lot of
- 4:48natural sunlight and our days are so short.
- 4:52Now our kidneys, it's energy peaks between 5:00 and 7:00 PM.
- 4:57Now our kidneys are so important in Chinese medicine because they
- 5:01store our vital energy, our Jing, OK.
- 5:05And it's connected to fear and it's also connected to fatigue.
- 5:09So if you think about the just these these three organs, OK,
- 5:15and these peak times, this is when they're literally at their
- 5:20their energy peak and they're supposed to be driving along,
- 5:23just cruising along the highway without hitting a traffic jam.
- 5:27But here's the thing. How many of us really have
- 5:32balanced organs and emotions? I don't know anybody.
- 5:39I even put myself in that category.
- 5:41We all do. So is everything cruising along
- 5:45in those two hour periods of each one of those lungs?
- 5:48Unlikely. Unlikely.
- 5:52So what happens in those two hour time frames, especially if
- 5:56you do have imbalance, is you're going to start to have magnified
- 6:00or amplified symptoms. So for example, with the liver
- 6:06between 1:00 and 3:00 AM, you might wake up feeling very
- 6:09frustrated, pissed off, angry, irritated, rageful, even maybe
- 6:15even resentful. Like, hello, I'm getting this
- 6:19rude 2:00 AM wake up call. Like, come on.
- 6:22Like, this pisses me off. You got hormones, you know,
- 6:25fluctuating all over the place. And for women, if you're in
- 6:28perimenopause or menopause, it's just like, OK, this is like a
- 6:32roller coaster time, right? Lungs.
- 6:36If you're experiencing a lot of grief or a lot of sadness, or
- 6:40you're having a hard time letting go of something, whether
- 6:43it's someone or an experience or just anything in general that
- 6:49you're struggling with, you know, letting go of, then during
- 6:53that time frame, those emotions and those experiences might be
- 6:59amplified. You also might have a harder
- 7:01time going to the bathroom at that time because the lungs are
- 7:05paired with the large intestine. So you might be constipated, or
- 7:10you might be the complete opposite.
- 7:12You might have diarrhea. Like, I'm just saying that
- 7:16during these time frames, things start to shift and instead of
- 7:20everything cruising along the highway, it's like hitting
- 7:23traffic jams. OK?
- 7:24And the traffic jams are like your symptoms.
- 7:27So same thing with the kidneys. Between 5:00 and 7:00 PMA, lot
- 7:31of people start to feel a major dip in energy.
- 7:35They start to feel extremely fatigued.
- 7:37And it's like, OK, it's 6:00 and I feel like I want to go to bed
- 7:40right now, right, with no energy left in the tank.
- 7:44And this what can also be when fear, if that's something that
- 7:49you're dealing with in your life can be amplified and you might
- 7:53start to have a lot more of that emotion coming up.
- 7:58So these are, you know, things to start to look at during
- 8:00these, you know, 2 hour periods. Is everything just cruising
- 8:04along? Or if you are you feeling, you
- 8:06know, like XYZ symptom or XYZ emotion.
- 8:10So when we lose that natural balance of light and dark, rest
- 8:17and activity, right? Especially during this season,
- 8:22which I kind of call is the segue into the yen season, you
- 8:25know, rest and renewal, these organs really start to feel the
- 8:30strain. And that's when you might notice
- 8:34you're walking around at you're waking up at odd hours, you're
- 8:37feeling Moody, or you're just running on what I call sleep
- 8:40debt. OK.
- 8:42And I'm going to be honest with you, sleep debt is real.
- 8:47So a lot of people have a misconception.
- 8:50I, you know, I'm going to, I sleep like crap during the week,
- 8:52but I'll catch up on the weekend and I'll get it all back then.
- 8:55It's not how it works. Sleep debt can only be
- 8:59eliminated by consistently working at it.
- 9:03Kind of like the same thing with your credit card debt, right?
- 9:07How many people pay it off just like that?
- 9:09Yes, lots. But sometimes some people don't.
- 9:12You got to wean it down, right? With sleep debt, you have to
- 9:15start to get consistent, nightly good quality sleep.
- 9:24And while that might be, yeah, that sounds so simple, let's be
- 9:27real. Once you hit your 40s, you don't
- 9:31bounce back from sleep loss the way you used to, right?
- 9:35Your hormones are shifting. Stress recovery takes longer.
- 9:39Your nervous system stays on alert longer.
- 9:41You know why? Because it's been used to being
- 9:44on alert for so damn long, and so it's just used to it.
- 9:50That heightened sympathetic state becomes our normal way of
- 9:56existing, and when we're in that state, we don't sleep.
- 10:01So you're probably thinking now, well Dang, like what do I do
- 10:05now? You soften, you start to slow
- 10:11down, you slow the F down. And this honestly, as we
- 10:18approach the late fall and winter season, this is where yin
- 10:23yoga and breath work become medicine.
- 10:26Daily medicine. Instead of fighting your
- 10:29tiredness with more coffee or pushing yourself or doing more,
- 10:34yin yoga invites you to balance that overactive Yang energy that
- 10:39you've had accumulated from spring and summer with stillness
- 10:44and surrender. And when you get still and you
- 10:47surrender, guess what? You let go.
- 10:50When you rest into poses like for example, butterfly pose
- 10:55where you bring the soles of your feet together and you open
- 10:57up your knees. You can do this lying down or
- 10:59you can do it seated and forward fold or you do Caterpillar,
- 11:02which is a seated forward fold with the legs extended out in
- 11:06front of you. You gently start to stimulate
- 11:11Meridian channels like the liver, the lung and the kidneys,
- 11:14these exact channels that need support right now.
- 11:19I mean right now in TCM, we are in the energy of the lung
- 11:23Meridian. So this is lung season.
- 11:26But having said that, the liver and the kidneys still need
- 11:34support. And when you start to add slow
- 11:39and lengthened exhalations, like maybe you're going to count in
- 11:44four counts as you breathe in and maybe 6 counts as you
- 11:48breathe out. Like if you're in a yen pose and
- 11:53you're breathing this way, you are literally rewiring your body
- 11:57back to calm, shifting it out of sympathetic and back into
- 12:02parasympathetic. And if you're waking up
- 12:07consistently between 1:00 and 5:00 AM, your liver and lungs
- 12:12are asking for space to process. They're asking you to surrender
- 12:17and let go of maybe the control, the grip, the holding on, the
- 12:21irritation, the frustration, or maybe it's the heavy sadness or
- 12:25grief. But they're asking for space.
- 12:30This is why you're waking up instead of that car on the
- 12:34highway cruising along. It's hitting traffic jam after
- 12:38traffic jam. And if you're dragging your ass
- 12:42around in the afternoon or early evening, your kidneys are like,
- 12:47hello, could we please be replenished?
- 12:51Like maybe with a short meditation or even a quiet walk
- 12:54after dinner instead of scrolling on your phone or
- 12:57numbing out on Netflix, right? Like we can all carve off 15
- 13:04minutes a day. I guarantee you, you are
- 13:07spending at least 15 minutes of your day scrolling on your damn
- 13:12phone or bingeing on Netflix and you can cut that out.
- 13:18You can. 15 minutes is actually a lot of time every single day
- 13:23to consistently start to bring your body back into balance.
- 13:29And Yin teaches us that healing doesn't always come from doing
- 13:33more. Sometimes it comes from doing
- 13:36less with a deeper presence, with more awareness.
- 13:40Like I want you to ask yourself something like really pause for
- 13:48a moment and ask yourself like, what emotions are showing up for
- 13:51me lately? Like what am I noticing?
- 13:54Am I always angry or irritated? Am I always sad?
- 13:59Am I always scared? Am I always worried?
- 14:04And then ask yourself again, well, where do I feel these
- 14:09emotions in my body? Like if I think about if I'm
- 14:12feeling frustrated, like where am I actually feeling it
- 14:15physically in my body? And what do I need to release
- 14:20before bed tonight? Because I will tell you,
- 14:23surrendering and letting go before bed really nourishes your
- 14:29nervous system and your subconscious mind.
- 14:33It just allows you to kind of just like wipe the slate clean
- 14:37instead of your subconscious mind over analyzing and
- 14:41processing over and over again. You don't need to do that.
- 14:47I will tell you your body is always communicating with you.
- 14:50Always. You just need to pause and ask.
- 14:56But when we're over fourty, I'm going to tell you that these
- 14:58questions, they're not indulgent.
- 15:02They're actually really essential because our bodies are
- 15:06more sensitive to energetic shifts and our emotions live
- 15:11deep inside within our connective tissue and fascial
- 15:15layers. OK.
- 15:17And so even a few minutes, like 15 minutes of yen and breath
- 15:21work before you go to bed can do so much for your sleep than that
- 15:26extra freaking hour of Netflix ever could.
- 15:30Seriously. Or that scrolling on Insta.
- 15:36And so you know what, like if you're sitting there, you're
- 15:39going, you know what? Like this is, this is really
- 15:41resonating with me. Like I have a whole library
- 15:46inside the soulful yin yoga app devoted especially for emotions
- 15:51and organs. So emotional health and organ
- 15:54support practices that are designed specifically to balance
- 15:59and help support liver, lungs, kidneys through these seasons,
- 16:03as well as your spleen and your heart like all of the organs.
- 16:08And a lot of my practices blend yin with acupressure points or
- 16:13with reflexology points and of course, breath work to help your
- 16:17body release, restore and realign.
- 16:22So tonight instead of like pushing yourself through that
- 16:26tired but wired feeling, and you know exactly what I mean by
- 16:30that, right? Like you're so exhausted you
- 16:32can't even keep your eyes open. But then you know what?
- 16:36Your head hits the pillow and you're like wide eyed, wired and
- 16:39bushy tailed. So instead of like just going to
- 16:43bed and feeling like that, unroll your yoga mat, dim the
- 16:48lights. OK, put your phone away and give
- 16:52your energy clock, that internal Meridian clock, permission to
- 16:57reset because just like you have to change the time on a clock
- 17:01and you have to reset it sometimes with new batteries,
- 17:04kind of got to do the same thing with your body.
- 17:08And I will tell you that your future self, the well rested
- 17:13self is going to thank you. And that internal body clock is
- 17:16going to be like hello, thank you for the reset.
- 17:20I really needed it, but I want to reiterate that especially
- 17:26when it comes time to your sleep, don't think that you can
- 17:32just catch up on sleep over the course of like a couple of
- 17:36weekends and think you're good to go.
- 17:39You can't pull that crap off when you're over 40.
- 17:42You could do it when you were in your 20s, but I'll tell you when
- 17:45you're in your 40s and hormones are shifting and the nervous
- 17:49system has stored so much heaviness, you just, you can't
- 17:55get away with that. You need to consistently take
- 17:59time every single day to nourish your nervous system to release
- 18:05the emotions that your body is holding on to and of course the
- 18:09tension that comes along with it that's held in the connective
- 18:12tissue, right. And for most of us who are
- 18:15sitting all day long staring at screens being over stimulated by
- 18:20that, like, isn't that so much better to just come on your mat
- 18:27and ditch your phone then stare at it and scroll on IG or binge
- 18:34on Netflix? Like to me, like, I'm sorry, but
- 18:38when I'm over, you know, like I'm over 40 and it's like there
- 18:43gets to be a point in your life where you know what, you know
- 18:46what, like my health is the most important thing and I'm willing
- 18:49to do everything that I can and I'm going to invest in all the
- 18:56ways that I can. And if you're not sleeping well
- 19:00and sleeping well consistently, I will tell you something.
- 19:04You're going to age a lot faster.
- 19:07That vital Jing, that vital essence, that vitality, that
- 19:12longevity that's stored in your kidneys is going to deplete a
- 19:15lot faster, which means essentially, you're not going to
- 19:19live as long. So do yourself a favor, invest
- 19:26in your health. So this is my little riff on
- 19:31Sleep on the TCM Body Lock. If you enjoyed this episode,
