- 0:00Welcome to a brand new episode of the
- 0:02Fit Women's Weekly Podcast.
- 0:03I'm excited today because I am starting a
- 0:05segment called Really Crappy Advice from Fitness Professionals
- 0:09and Fitness Influencers.
- 0:11And we're going to start off with the
- 0:13two worst pieces of advice that I personally
- 0:16see on a regular basis.
- 0:18And I'm going to guess that if I
- 0:19see it, you do too.
- 0:21So the first one was actually inspired from
- 0:22an email that I got from a personal
- 0:24trainer who I am subscribed to.
- 0:26And the email is very short and sweet.
- 0:28I'm going to read it out loud to
- 0:29you.
- 0:30So it says, excessive cardio is never a
- 0:32good thing without proper nutritional support.
- 0:34But as we age, our bodies take a
- 0:36harder hit from cardio.
- 0:37This increases our cortisol production, which causes us
- 0:40to hold onto more body fat stores, actively
- 0:43working against our efforts to get toned.
- 0:46So what is this saying?
- 0:48It is saying, oh my gosh, if you
- 0:49are a woman 40 and over, because that's
- 0:52what this personal trainer focuses on, you better
- 0:55watch out and stop doing cardio because it's
- 0:57just going to make you fatter and more
- 0:59unhealthy in the long run.
- 1:01And obviously that is not what we want.
- 1:04Is this true?
- 1:06And why are they saying that?
- 1:08And this has been a really big thing.
- 1:10I feel like maybe it's just me and
- 1:11my age where I'm seeing a lot of
- 1:13hormonal health, a lot of balance, your hormone
- 1:17influencers out in the world, a lot of
- 1:20personal trainers that are focusing in on that.
- 1:22And I do too, but I want to
- 1:23try to come at it from a different
- 1:24side.
- 1:24I want to try to come at it
- 1:26from the science side of what's actually real.
- 1:29So first off, is this true?
- 1:32So we all know that cortisol is the
- 1:34stress hormone.
- 1:35When your body is undergoing a lot of
- 1:37stress, whether it's internal or external, it produces
- 1:40cortisol to try to come back to center,
- 1:43balance yourself back out.
- 1:45And the truth is, yes, cardio does increase
- 1:48your cortisol levels.
- 1:49However, all exercise does.
- 1:52Anytime that you are pushing your body outside
- 1:54of its standard place, right?
- 1:57Whether you're increasing your heart rate or moving
- 1:59your muscles at a really hard effort, that
- 2:01is going to a state of stress where
- 2:03your cortisol levels are going to rise.
- 2:06However, it is a short term thing because
- 2:08that's what your body is naturally supposed to
- 2:10do.
- 2:11So yes, your levels will rise, but guess
- 2:12what?
- 2:13They're going to come right back down.
- 2:14The other thing is that exercise is not
- 2:16the only thing that makes your cortisol levels
- 2:18rise.
- 2:19This is a natural thing that happens.
- 2:20It's a cyclic activity throughout your body, throughout
- 2:23the day.
- 2:24When you wake up, your cortisol levels go
- 2:26very high.
- 2:27And then as you wake up and go
- 2:28through the day, they tend to level out,
- 2:30depending on your recovery and the things that
- 2:33you do in your daily life, right?
- 2:35So does this mean that because your cortisol
- 2:39levels are rising during cardio, that it's making
- 2:42it harder for you to lose weight or
- 2:45burn body fat?
- 2:46Absolutely not.
- 2:48Absolutely freaking not.
- 2:50The only way that cortisol levels are going
- 2:53to go to such a level that it's
- 2:54going to affect your fat burning potential is
- 2:57if you're in a chronic state of increased
- 3:00cortisol levels.
- 3:01Meaning you're in a chronic state of fatigue,
- 3:04a chronic state of stress.
- 3:05And the chances of that from actually coming
- 3:07from your exercise, for most of us, I'm
- 3:10not going to say for all of us,
- 3:11but for most of us, that is very
- 3:12slim.
- 3:13You're going to have to go into an
- 3:14excessive exercise habit where you are doing cardio
- 3:17every day for a long, about 60, 90
- 3:20minutes longer every single day.
- 3:23And most of us aren't doing that.
- 3:25Most of us have a hard time just
- 3:26fitting in the exercise that we are required
- 3:29or not necessarily required, but suggested that we
- 3:32do just anyways, right?
- 3:34Consistency is the number one issue for women.
- 3:36So this idea that you're doing too much,
- 3:39it's pretty freaking slim to know not only
- 3:42that, I do want to stress the fact
- 3:44that cardio is actually extremely important for hormonal
- 3:48balance, especially as we're getting older, right?
- 3:51Not only is it helping us to maintain
- 3:53a healthy body weight, but it's helping with
- 3:55our heart health.
- 3:56It's helping to decrease other chronic diseases like
- 3:59diabetes, like cancer.
- 4:01It's helping to improve our metabolic health.
- 4:04It's helping to keep our body in a
- 4:08healthy state just all together.
- 4:10It's helping us sleep better.
- 4:11It's literally helping us decrease stress in the
- 4:14long run.
- 4:15We all know that for a lot of
- 4:16us with mental issues such as anxiety and
- 4:19depression, that what's one of the best things
- 4:21that you can do for it?
- 4:23Exercise.
- 4:23And so if you're hoping the anxiety, which
- 4:26is a stressor on your body, you're not
- 4:28increasing your cortisol levels to excessive amounts.
- 4:32You're decreasing your levels of cortisol, right?
- 4:35And so I want you to keep that
- 4:37in mind.
- 4:37So if you see a personal trainer that
- 4:38is trying to push on you, careful, don't
- 4:41do cardio.
- 4:42It's going to make your hormones become imbalanced,
- 4:45which is false.
- 4:45It actually helps to balance them.
- 4:47It's going to increase your fat storage.
- 4:49No, it's actually going to help you maintain
- 4:52your body composition and help your body composition.
- 4:55If you are in a caloric deficit, what
- 4:57things you need to be looking on at
- 5:00are your lifestyle decisions, which are going to
- 5:02play a much larger role in the stressors
- 5:05in your life and how your overall cortisol
- 5:07levels look in terms of chronic fatigue and
- 5:10chronic stress.
- 5:12Does that make sense?
- 5:13So what are some things that you can
- 5:14do to make sure that you're not going
- 5:15to an unhealthy place with your stress levels?
- 5:18Well, obviously we know getting enough sleep, having
- 5:21a healthy diet that is fueled around proper
- 5:25protein, proper carbohydrates, proper fat.
- 5:28And that isn't so much as a you
- 5:32want to make sure that you're not eating
- 5:33a lot of fake processed foods that you're
- 5:36getting most of your diet from all natural
- 5:38foods.
- 5:38That's obviously going to fuel your body the
- 5:40best, making sure that you are hydrated, making
- 5:42sure that you are taking your care of
- 5:44yourself.
- 5:44You're taking time to rest or journal or
- 5:47whatever the case may be things that you
- 5:49do for you that make you feel good.
- 5:52So why is it that trainers are pushing
- 5:54this in the first place?
- 5:55I think that there's two reasons.
- 5:56One, it's kind of fear mongering a little
- 5:59bit where you go, oh my gosh.
- 6:00Well, I don't want to increase my cortisol
- 6:02levels.
- 6:03I don't want to add body fat.
- 6:05This trainer must know what she's talking about.
- 6:07So I'm going to join her program.
- 6:09I think the other tidbit is they're giving
- 6:13you what you are not necessarily you, but
- 6:15what a lot of people want to hear
- 6:17versus need to hear when you say, oh,
- 6:20you shouldn't be doing cardio.
- 6:22A lot of people go, well, thank God,
- 6:23I hate cardio.
- 6:24I don't want to sweat.
- 6:25I don't have time for it.
- 6:26This person is telling me that I don't
- 6:28need to do it.
- 6:28That makes it easier for my fitness, right?
- 6:31So I'm going to follow their programming.
- 6:33So I think it's those two things that
- 6:36go hand in hand.
- 6:38I, for one, am trying to bridge that
- 6:41gap between where, yes, I want to give
- 6:43you what you want, but I also want
- 6:45to give you what you need.
- 6:46So I'm never going to prescribe false, a
- 6:50false narrative to try to scare you and
- 6:52to do one thing or sugar coat stuff.
- 6:54When you want to change your body composition,
- 6:56or if you want to just be the
- 6:57healthiest that you want to be in terms
- 6:59of your fitness and your nutrition, it takes
- 7:02consistently showing up and it means consistently showing
- 7:05up with cardio health and with your strength
- 7:08training, your flexibility, your mobility, all of those
- 7:12different elements.
- 7:13And yes, that does take a commitment from
- 7:15one week to the next, one month to
- 7:17the next, year after year.
- 7:19I get out there and I do a
- 7:21structured cardio workout at least three times a
- 7:24week, and I've been doing this for 20
- 7:25years.
- 7:27Do I have an excessive amount of belly
- 7:29fat because of that?
- 7:30Absolutely not.
- 7:32So that's bad.
- 7:34Take number one, the trainers out there that
- 7:36say that cardio is bad for you.
- 7:38Please don't listen to them.
- 7:40And then bad take number two is this
- 7:42narrative of, Oh my gosh, I'm eating more
- 7:44food than I ever have.
- 7:46And I'm losing body fat.
- 7:48So what are they saying?
- 7:50First off, again, it comes to that narrative
- 7:52of what you want to hear.
- 7:54You can eat more and actually lose weight.
- 7:56So what they're saying is they're just twisting
- 7:59the words around a little bit.
- 8:01This is like marketing one-on-one, right?
- 8:03Where people, professional, like fitness professionals or fitness
- 8:07influencers, not necessarily professionals, but they are eating
- 8:11more in terms of density, perhaps where they're
- 8:14going to start eating more whole foods versus
- 8:17processed foods.
- 8:18And so on their plate, it does look
- 8:19like there's more food because think about like
- 8:21500 calories worth of salad versus 500 calories
- 8:25of pizza.
- 8:26Those plates are going to look extremely different.
- 8:29There's going to be more food on your
- 8:30plate for that salad, but that's just called
- 8:33food density versus I'm eating more, I'm eating
- 8:36less.
- 8:36They're still eating the same amount of calories.
- 8:38It's just designed in a different way.
- 8:40And so yeah, the people that are eating
- 8:41500 calories of salad, which is full of
- 8:44fiber, they're typically going to load it up
- 8:47with some sort of protein, whether it's chicken
- 8:48or fish or steak, whatever the case may
- 8:51be.
- 8:51So then they're also getting a good dose
- 8:53of protein on top of that.
- 8:55They're going to feel fuller faster.
- 8:58So they might end up eating actually a
- 9:00little bit less and in return, they're going
- 9:02to burn body fat and lose weight that
- 9:04way, but they're not losing weight because they're
- 9:07eating more that goes against everything with physics,
- 9:11the law of thermodynamics is if that you
- 9:14have to be in an imbalance, you have
- 9:16to burn more calories than what you are
- 9:18taking in, which means you have to be
- 9:20in a caloric deficit in order to lose
- 9:22weight.
- 9:22So there's no way you can literally be
- 9:24eating more food than what you should be
- 9:28eating past your baseline of your metabolism and
- 9:32lose weight.
- 9:33It's just not possible, but you can lose
- 9:35weight from eating more higher dense foods that
- 9:38in return have fewer calories and are also
- 9:41more filling with fiber and protein and healthy
- 9:44fats that will satisfy you from one meal
- 9:47to the next more so than if you
- 9:49are eating more of a processed foods, which
- 9:50typically are more filled with carbohydrates.
- 9:55So think like pizza, for example, or pasta,
- 9:57you might have 500 calories worth of pasta
- 10:00and that'll fill you up in the time
- 10:02being.
- 10:03But because that is broken down so quickly,
- 10:05carbohydrates actually start to break down in your
- 10:08mouth versus the digestive tract of like your
- 10:10intestines, like fats or proteins, stomach, it takes
- 10:13longer to burn those things down, which means
- 10:15those things keep you fuller longer than pure
- 10:19carbohydrate.
- 10:20And that means that you are going to
- 10:21be hungrier sooner, leading you to eat a
- 10:24little bit more.
- 10:25So again, bad take, they're not being fully
- 10:29transparent.
- 10:30And so on this podcast podcast, I always
- 10:32want to be transparent with you guys.
- 10:33So those are my bad takes for the
- 10:35week.
- 10:36Number one, cardio is making you fat.
- 10:39No, it is not.
- 10:41Please do your cardio, y'all.
- 10:43It is going to make you more of
- 10:44a well-rounded, healthier person.
- 10:46It's going to protect you from chronic disease.
- 10:48It's going to help with your metabolic health
- 10:50as you get older.
- 10:51It's going to help with your bone health
- 10:52is also going to help you be able
- 10:55to maintain your independence longer.
- 10:58And of course, it's also going to make
- 11:00you stronger when it comes to your other
- 11:01forms of exercise, like a deadlift or like
- 11:04strength training, for example, where you ever deadlifted
- 11:06for 10 reps.
- 11:07You put that weight down and you feel
- 11:08like you ran a mile.
- 11:10Well, no, that's not actually cardio, but it
- 11:13is a sign that your cardio is not
- 11:15where it should be so that you can
- 11:17do those kind of large sets without being
- 11:19like, oh, my God, I need 10 minutes
- 11:21to rest because I just ran a mile
- 11:22when, in fact, you just did 10 reps
- 11:24of something.
- 11:25Right.
- 11:25So things to think about.
- 11:26And then the second bad take is that
- 11:28you are going to lose weight from eating
- 11:30more.
- 11:31No, you're going to lose weight from being
- 11:32a caloric deficit.
- 11:34It's just the way that you are in
- 11:35that deficit, the different types of foods that
- 11:37you eat that will help you.
- 11:39And so, yes, you might look at your
- 11:40plate and there's more food on there, but
- 11:42it's still the same amount of calories or
- 11:45less.
- 11:45It's just different types of foods.
- 11:47So hopefully you guys found this helpful.
- 11:49It kept me up last night because I
- 11:51was just reeling off of this email that
- 11:53I got when I was like, how is
- 11:55this person so popular?
- 11:57But they are showing such crappy advice in
- 12:00order to grow their platform.
- 12:02I'm just going to give it to you
- 12:03real.
- 12:04I'm going to be real with you guys.
- 12:05I'm going to give you the tough love.
- 12:06If that hurts me, it means that I'm
- 12:08not going to get the hundreds of thousands
- 12:11of followers on Instagram or on YouTube or
- 12:14whatever platform, then so be it.
- 12:16But I'd rather be real and honest with
- 12:17you guys, then give you just what you
- 12:20want to hear.
- 12:21I want to give you what you need
