- 0:11Welcome back to another episode of the Mindsets podcast.
- 0:14Second one of the year, Chow. Chow down.
- 0:17Chow down on that, Charles, how you doing?
- 0:20I was having a really good start to the year Angus, until this
- 0:23morning. I was hoping you're going to be
- 0:26upbeat today. Yeah, no, no, no, no, no.
- 0:28I'm going to be more upbeat. I just need to get this off my
- 0:30chest and share it with the listeners who I think will also
- 0:32find this funny. But I have a new Yeti water
- 0:37bottle. I have a new Yeti coffee mug.
- 0:40Hold on a minute now. Not specified.
- 0:42Yeah. Not once, yeah.
- 0:44Off the back of last. Episode.
- 0:46Yeah. Not yet.
- 0:46Not yet. Not yet.
- 0:47We're working on it. And they, I mean, then they
- 0:50don't look even remotely similar.
- 0:52They're not even the same shape, but in my days, at 5:30 this
- 0:56morning when I got to the gym, I had coffee in one, I had water
- 0:59in the other. And what I do with my water in
- 1:02the morning, I get my electrolytes.
- 1:04I wasn't thinking. I ripped open the electrolytes.
- 1:06I went to pour it into the water vessel and went straight into
- 1:11the black coffee. Vessel So I had this.
- 1:13How quickly did you realize that as I was pouring?
- 1:15I was like that's no good, no good.
- 1:18And at 5:30 in the morning there's little hope other than
- 1:21my black coffee to get me through my 3 hours of
- 1:24back-to-back coaching. And as I did it, members started
- 1:28walking in and they all found it very funny and I was very upset.
- 1:32Did you, did you try and finish it and get through the hallway?
- 1:36So it was lychee flavoured electrolyte is that?
- 1:39Is that a strong flavour? It's pretty strong.
- 1:41Oh, OK. And like, I wouldn't be able to
- 1:43describe to you or explain to you what lychee flavour is, but
- 1:47it doesn't go with black coffee. So yeah, it was a tough start to
- 1:51the morning. I, I did try it.
- 1:52I was like, I'm, I'm not particularly fussy, but I, I
- 1:55can't drink that. That's.
- 1:57Horrible. It was a tough start.
- 1:58Do you want it? Even even though like you're an
- 2:00adults, you're like, well, that's not going to define my
- 2:02day. It does a little bit.
- 2:03Well, I no, it's all about framing 'cause then I was like,
- 2:06it can't possibly get worse. Did it?
- 2:09No. Well, there.
- 2:09You go there. Exactly.
- 2:10Exactly. What a great day.
- 2:12I know What Great. Yeah, that's what I think.
- 2:13What a great episode this is going to be.
- 2:15Fantastic. Well, let's kick it off then.
- 2:18For those that are unaware, we're now doing news in
- 2:22two-minute format. And what that means is because
- 2:25we had some issues last year where we've waffled and rambled,
- 2:27we've decided to rein it in and get competitive with ourselves
- 2:30and we're going to try and give you the best Sports News updates
- 2:33you can get in 2 minutes. Do you want me to kick us off
- 2:37this this. Particular time you're going to
- 2:38have to. OK, this is going to be quick,
- 2:40so make sure you're listening. Ready, steady go.
- 2:43John Harboe and Mike Tomlinson have both stepped down from
- 2:46their coaching positions in the NFL, which is crazy because
- 2:48that's the first time they've been out of a job in 18 years.
- 2:51So that's the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers that
- 2:53are out of a coach in college. American football.
- 2:56We've got Indiana, who are currently #1 ranked first time,
- 2:58possibly ever that's happened. They're going to the national
- 3:01championship final against Miami U.
- 3:03First time in a long time they've been there as well.
- 3:05We're switching footballs to El Clasico, Barcelona versus Real
- 3:08Madrid. It was Barcelona 32 to Real
- 3:10Madrid, a quite convincing victory actually, actually.
- 3:13But talking about convincing victories, Crystal Palace reign,
- 3:16champions of the FA Cup. They lost to Macclesfield in the
- 3:20FA Cup this season. Crazy for switching over to
- 3:23women's football. We've got Man City.
- 3:24You look like they're going to absolutely dominate this league.
- 3:26They've played 12, they've won 11.
- 3:28Whereas if you look at Liverpool bottom of the table, they've
- 3:30played 12, they've only won four and they have lost 8.
- 3:36Then we move on to the Winter Olympics.
- 3:37We've got Chloe Kim who's snowboarding half pipe, gold
- 3:40medalist for the US, she's won it twice.
- 3:43She's dislocated to her shoulder just a few weeks out of the
- 3:45competition. So that's crazy.
- 3:46The next most crazy news from the Winter Olympics is that in
- 3:49hockey, rinks aren't going to be finished for the Olympics
- 3:52apparently anyway. Tabitha Soka, silver, the Euro
- 3:55champs and skeleton, she's British.
- 3:57She's going to be a medal hopeful for us in the Winter
- 4:00Olympic Games and I'm passing over to you for however long and
- 4:02we've got left. I don't even know where to
- 4:03start. You've got 40 seconds, Jake
- 4:06Deardon. I guess this is less official
- 4:08Sporting News, but still equally impressive.
- 4:10He set out to run a 219 marathon in Houston.
- 4:13I think it was last weekend or the weekend before.
- 4:15He just missed it. He ran a 222 which is also
- 4:18unbelievable given the the size of the guy.
- 4:20That's 17 minute 5 case for the whole time.
- 4:23Yeah, and just like unbelievable performance, I'm like seeing
- 4:26that I think he definitely has a sub 220 in the tank, which I
- 4:29think will prove a lot of people wrong.
- 4:30You've. Got 10 seconds.
- 4:31And off the back of that, true, Haynes also announced that he's
- 4:34going to go for the Olympic Trials for the marathon, which
- 4:36is also ridiculous. He is a freak.
- 4:38He is. He's the guy that runs in jeans.
- 4:40He might be like the epitome of hybrid.
- 4:41That was one minute, 59 seconds. Thank you very much.
- 4:45Smashed it. I do have one thing that I want
- 4:47to talk about that's not news. OK, so now we're into the normal
- 4:50part of the podcast. We can talk about this quickly.
- 4:52Talk slower. Jake Dearden with his 222, I
- 4:57heard today that he had something like 19 gels
- 5:02throughout the race. He averaged that.
- 5:04That could be wrong. He averaged a gel more than
- 5:07every 5K, OK, which is so he was having a gel pretty much every
- 5:1120 minutes, which is crazy, especially because so he's
- 5:13sponsored by BPN. So they have the go gels, so
- 5:16they've got quite a high carb loading in them.
- 5:19But just his ability to consume that amount of fuel is so
- 5:23impressive. I think it's really interesting
- 5:24and like something with maybe future episodes we talk about
- 5:27because it's like he is bigger than most marathon runners.
- 5:31So I'm sure he's consuming well. He obviously is consuming more
- 5:34fuel than your typical marathon runner, but it's interesting to,
- 5:38I'd like to see the research to go, this is the fuel that you
- 5:42need to be using Jake during your marathon because I always
- 5:46think that I take on more fuel when I'm running long compared
- 5:48to what other people are using. And again, like I'm probably
- 5:52heavier than most typical runners.
- 5:54So it's interesting to see. But I mean, it still seems like
- 5:56a lot of gel to be consuming. One more question.
- 5:58The state of his stomach. One more question for you.
- 6:01If you're Jake Geeden, you said you're going to run a 219.
- 6:04You ran a 222, which is very impressive.
- 6:06You're also in the Elite 15 of High Rocks.
- 6:08Now what do you? Do he's?
- 6:10I think he'll probably now switch focus and I don't want to
- 6:14speak on his behalf. He'll switch focus back to high
- 6:17rocks and then potentially run again at the end of this year.
- 6:20Valencia could be fast. Of course, it could be, who
- 6:24knows, or, or something similar or, or or, you know, when you
- 6:28you're that close to it, his body will need a long time to
- 6:31recover. But it would seem a shame to not
- 6:34kick on from that training and kind of with that added race
- 6:37experience because did I read that was his second marathon?
- 6:41I think so is it? I think that might be as, which
- 6:43is again, like insane. Like it's doing the rounds on
- 6:46social media and I see lots of running coaches and running
- 6:48influencers talking about him and and Trey Haynes.
- 6:51But like, the guy's a freak and like, he's obviously very
- 6:54committed to it and he's very talented and I'd love to see him
- 6:57reach his goal. But to be that close must be
- 7:00frustrating for him, but also, like, equally impressive.
- 7:03I'm calling it right now. Jay Dearden top five at the
- 7:07World champs in Stockholm for the Elite 15 and then runs a 218
- 7:11in Valencia later this year. 218 that's fast man, I'm calling it.
- 7:16Don't let me down. I think that puts him like that
- 7:17would put him top 100 marathon times of 2025, which which
- 7:24actually doesn't sound that impressive, but it is
- 7:26ridiculous. That's impressive.
- 7:27Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:27Especially if that's not your main discipline.
- 7:28Yeah, I suppose. And I completely probably made
- 7:30that fact up, but. So it was so it was interesting
- 7:34though. Yeah, that's what well, we're
- 7:37moving into the next section. So the next staple section of
- 7:39our podcast now is Grind My Gears.
- 7:41We're not leaving you guys hanging.
- 7:42We're going straight into the nitty gritty and we've had some
- 7:46fantastic submissions this week. The first one we got was
- 7:49actually a voice note from a Mr. Charlie bottle.
- 7:53He is well known in the fitness space for being the connoisseur
- 7:57of meal deals. He's particularly interested in
- 7:58the episodes where we have brought those in.
- 8:00When he comes back on soon enough he will be having a bit
- 8:03of meal deal breakdown with us. However, in his local Tesco, his
- 8:08gears have been ground recently. So he understands that Tesco
- 8:13have got the snack side of the meal deal which can be from the
- 8:16bakery and in particular at the moment he's a big fan of getting
- 8:19a pretzel. However, in his current Tescos,
- 8:23the bakery bit is disconnected from where the rest of the meal
- 8:26deal is. And there's a there's a gate,
- 8:28like a security gate. What that means is so basically
- 8:32you go in to the meal deals. So I've actually been to the
- 8:35area, it's not the nicest of areas.
- 8:38So this Tesco's got some good security in the meal deal
- 8:40section. Once you've picked your meal
- 8:41deal, you go through a security gate and basically leads you to
- 8:44paying. OK, now you can once you step
- 8:47out of that gate, you can go to other parts of the shop, but the
- 8:50next thing you have to do is go to pet.
- 8:53Now the problem for Charlie at the moment is pretzel stock has
- 8:56been a diabolical, but you can't see if the pretzels are in stock
- 9:00before you get there. So he's banking on it choosing
- 9:04his drinks selectively, choosing his main course selectively and
- 9:06hoping that the pretzels are there.
- 9:08But when they're not, he has to set the alarm off by going the
- 9:11wrong way to have a snack because he doesn't have a snack.
- 9:13And he's not paying full price for those two items.
- 9:15I see it so. He's it's fair to say he's
- 9:18rather upset at the moment, the pretzel stock and that has
- 9:22ground. Like in a Charlie bottle's gear.
- 9:23Fully appreciate why. However, I think we need to add
- 9:27something else because I forgot to say it in the last podcast
- 9:29and this leads nicely into it. We talk comically about meal
- 9:34deals, like the the volume. We talk about meal deals like
- 9:36it's, it's a big thing. It's a big topic.
- 9:37We like talking about it. Obviously Charlie does as well.
- 9:40I feel like we can actually hold some credibility in the sandwich
- 9:45space in this podcast now because if you haven't got
- 9:48Nectar card, they do like a Nectar card wrapped at the end
- 9:52of the year, a little bit like Spotify Wrapped.
- 9:54Clubcard do the same thing as well.
- 9:55And you can see what you purchased, how much you purchase
- 9:58of it. Oh.
- 9:59This is such a cool thing. Well, it's not actually cool.
- 10:02It's always actually fairly tragic.
- 10:04Yeah, But I, I went on, my necks are wrapped at the beginning of
- 10:08January because I was interested to see basically how much I'd
- 10:10spent and saved. But it turned out that not only
- 10:14was I the number one purchaser of the pull pork sub in my local
- 10:20Sainsbury's, but I was the number one purchaser in the
- 10:23whole of England for that one sandwich, which I think that
- 10:28adds some credibility to us talking about meal deals.
- 10:31If I remember correctly, you went in Sainsbury's something
- 10:33like 430 times last year. It averaged out as like 1.3
- 10:39times a day. No days.
- 10:42Off given the fact that I also was not in the country for a
- 10:46good couple of weeks so there were days where I was averaging
- 10:49like maybe 3-4 times and says plus my 190 something visits to
- 10:53Tesco, basically all I did last year was go fucking shopping.
- 10:58If you want to see a live reaction because I've not had
- 11:00the sandwich that he was buying before, If you want to see a
- 11:02live reaction and I can basically potentially shit on
- 11:05you for one of the worst sandwich choices.
- 11:08I'm quite excited by it. And if you've bought that many
- 11:10and you are the number one purchaser in the UK, it has
- 11:13pretty good. It says a lot about me if it's
- 11:15not good. I was.
- 11:16I was pretty upset with mine. Lidl also did a similar thing,
- 11:21however, I apparently haven't been shopping nearly as much as
- 11:23I thought I had. And I was proud of the fact,
- 11:26however, that one of the main things that was in my basket was
- 11:29chicken breast. But that's like the most boring
- 11:32thing as well. That's pretty boring.
- 11:33Like that's why when supermarkets were like, oh, we
- 11:36should do that, they didn't think it through.
- 11:37Because now I've looked at it and gone wow, I'm.
- 11:39Boring. Also it's like really depressing
- 11:41that I spent so much money in Sainsbury's and like I saved
- 11:44£22.00 or something because the OR like that was how much net to
- 11:47savings I got. It's, I'm pretty sure.
- 11:49I've saved that on one purchase. You go to the habitat range and
- 11:52you see something that's cheap and you save 22 lbs or
- 11:54something. Terrible.
- 11:56Anyway, slightly distracted, however, bringing it back into
- 12:00the meal deal area, one of the things that has been grinding
- 12:04mine and other people's gears. I haven't seen it in a while but
- 12:07someone told me about this which is phenomenal.
- 12:11British society has gone so far downhill.
- 12:14The Red Bull cans and other energy cans, not just Red Bull
- 12:18have can locks on them because people are shoplifting them and
- 12:21then these like little plastic things which they'll undo for
- 12:24you at the till. But it's it's an energy drink.
- 12:29Is the economy so bad that it's worth the investment in those
- 12:34locks to just stop someone nabbing a Red Bull when, correct
- 12:37me if I'm wrong, especially in London, every supermarket has at
- 12:41least one security guard now. Yeah, yeah, at least.
- 12:43With a camera, yeah. Why do I have to ask someone to
- 12:48take the lock off my? It is crazy, isn't it?
- 12:50Do you think it I mean, it must be the supermarket that is.
- 12:53I'm just finding that initiative.
- 12:55It's not the OK Red Bull align. You must put locks on our cans.
- 12:58Yeah, no way. But also just standing and
- 13:00waiting for like verification of my age to buy a white monster
- 13:05with my meal deal. I think I've told you this
- 13:07before, but I got IDD by someone for an energy drink in my local
- 13:11village that I grew up in by someone that was in the year
- 13:13below me at school and I didn't have ID and therefore they had
- 13:15to refuse me to. Oh, really?
- 13:17Yeah, just doing their job and I respect that terribly and you
- 13:20should respect that as well. No respect at all, really.
- 13:23Following protocol I respect my. Gears that really round my
- 13:26gears. The next one we've got is from
- 13:29me. This was I just added it to the
- 13:30list. Oranges that don't peel well.
- 13:33Yeah, I saw that on your story. I was a bit sad.
- 13:35Why are we growing them anymore if we're doing that much genetic
- 13:38mutation? Easy peelers.
- 13:40Why? Find the ones that don't peel.
- 13:42Easy. Well, I wasn't aware that I had.
- 13:44That's the problem. I assume that they all should.
- 13:46Be Yeah, that's the gear. Grinding.
- 13:47Yeah. Next one is we got 2 messages
- 13:51similar to this. I'm tying it all into one, but
- 13:53it's something I've also witnessed quite a lot and ties
- 13:57nicely into today's topic of choice.
- 14:01But working in etiquette in the gym is terrible.
- 14:06So recently and I'll I'll give my personal experience.
- 14:10Recently I was in a pure gym and I went over to someone who was
- 14:14using the adductor abductor machine.
- 14:18I've been told it's one of my weakness areas and I'm trying to
- 14:21work on those. So I went over and I was like
- 14:23hey, how many sets for your left?
- 14:25They said three. OK, now I'm thinking, cool, I
- 14:30see you sat on your phone for three minutes at a time between
- 14:32your sets. I'm expecting them to go, but
- 14:36you can work in because if you're going to take 15 minutes,
- 14:40I would expect that, you know? And that offer never came.
- 14:44And I was like, oh, how long do you reckon you'll be?
- 14:45And they were like, oh, probably like, at least 10.
- 14:47And I was like, OK, I'd done everything else.
- 14:51So I actually did stand there like a mug.
- 14:55Like that's literally how I felt just.
- 14:56Stood watching them. Yeah, and I felt like a bit of a
- 14:58creep to be honest, because as you can imagine, by the typical
- 15:01user of that machine, they weren't male and I just felt
- 15:05awkward about it. But people just need to
- 15:08understand if you say one set, the person is fine to wait or
- 15:13should be fine to wait 2 sets maybe if we're going to be
- 15:15quick, just always throw it out there anyway.
- 15:19I even if I've got one set, I'll be like, you can get on it now
- 15:21if you want. Yeah, and I'll just do a set.
- 15:23I'm just I'm I'm more interested to know how many sets they're
- 15:26doing in total. If they would still had three to
- 15:29go. How many sets did you do?
- 15:32I did three sets. OK, so so then you're like,
- 15:34well, is there actually much point in doing more than three
- 15:37sets? Why were they doing more the?
- 15:38Only time I'm not keen for someone to work in with me if
- 15:40it's something like a bench or plane loaded where like you've
- 15:42got to swap it all around. So if someone comes over to me
- 15:45and they're like, oh, how many sets have you left?
- 15:47I'm on the bench and I've, I have got like maybe 3 left.
- 15:50I'll be like, I've literally just sat down.
- 15:52Yeah, because I probably have literally just put the weight
- 15:55that I wanted to. I'm, I'm going to do some warm
- 15:57up sets. So I've got three sets and I'm
- 15:59going to take 2 1/2 minutes worth of rest.
- 16:00Like Max, you're going to be there was like 15 minutes.
- 16:03So like you can go and do something other.
- 16:05The other reason specifically to bench that I wouldn't want
- 16:07someone to sweating with me. No, not even that is if they're
- 16:11like joined spot you. No, I don't.
- 16:13I'm good, thanks. Really, I'd rather die.
- 16:16Let it pin me. Let it pin me.
- 16:18Let me get squashed by a bar. Yeah, really.
- 16:19You're against. You're against being spotted.
- 16:21I don't like it. I think it's just a really
- 16:23awkward social interaction. It is quite intimate.
- 16:26It's is. They're the way.
- 16:28I'd describe it very intimate and you're so like you're
- 16:32exposing yourself so much. Like this is your I'm.
- 16:35Trusting this stranger with my life, I don't.
- 16:38Think it's that deep? Have you not seen the failure
- 16:41videos where someone asks for a spot to come over and they have
- 16:43no idea what they're doing? Or the funniest video is where
- 16:45they're holding the bar down on their chest.
- 16:47Yeah, yeah, yeah. I had AI.
- 16:51Had a weird one where I was spotting someone mentioning the
- 16:54other day. There's like when you're getting
- 16:57spotted, maybe you're like failing your last Rep, you're
- 17:00still trying to push. I'm there.
- 17:03This guy just stopped. Like like in this position you
- 17:08want me to hold 110? I wasn't ready for it.
- 17:12OK, so I do this really funny thing.
- 17:15I always should. I do when people ask me to spot
- 17:18them. First of all, I'm delighted.
- 17:21You've picked me out of a crowd and you've gone.
- 17:23You're good to spot me and I'm like, thank you, I've got it.
- 17:26I've really worked on this, that you feel that report anyway,
- 17:29when it comes to the time that the person is inevitably failing
- 17:32that Rep, I never ever want someone to feel like they didn't
- 17:36give it a good effort, even if they haven't.
- 17:38Yeah, you must. So toxic trait from me and has
- 17:41nearly cost me multiple fingers. I only have a spot with two
- 17:44fingers from each hand. So if someone has pretty much
- 17:47given up, I'm still only going to do it with two fingers.
- 17:50So I've been there like, Oh my God, my, my tendons are going to
- 17:53RIP off my fingers here. But when they stand up, I'm
- 17:55like, I literally just needed these, man.
- 17:57You didn't, You did all of that. You can basically claim.
- 18:00And I walk away and I'm like, Oh my God, I mean.
- 18:04That's bad spotting etiquette for safety.
- 18:07But you only ever you only ever. OK, this actually grinds my
- 18:11gears when this is, we're going down a rabbit hole, but it's so
- 18:14relevant. But it's like spotting, but
- 18:17you're doing too much. You like you've got main
- 18:19character energy when you're not the main character on the bench
- 18:22because it's like you only spot. And this is useful practical
- 18:25advice in the gym, especially if you're going to go and spot
- 18:27someone. You only ever spot on the bench
- 18:29press when the bar starts coming back down because it's like
- 18:32that's when it can get dangerous where you're like, you have to
- 18:35save them. But if the bar's moving up, do
- 18:38not touch. It get your hands off.
- 18:39The bar is stationary. Do not help them because they
- 18:42they, they squeeze, they're going to.
- 18:44Mentor it mentally switch on. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:46Do not go near that. Bar that's like the warning
- 18:48signs you're like OK maybe I'm ready to work so.
- 18:50Here's my here's my spot cues, and you can tell me if you like
- 18:54them, and then we can use that as advice for other people.
- 18:58You asked me to spoil you. I go, yeah, How many reps you're
- 19:00going for? Cool.
- 19:01Nice. Position myself behind before we
- 19:04have to do an awkward thing where I'm standing over your
- 19:06head. I then I quite like the approach
- 19:09that like I'm so confident in you I'm going to stand back.
- 19:12Yeah, yeah, I'm like away from it like all you.
- 19:14But I will ask do you want to lift off?
- 19:17Do you want to lift off? I'll help you when I give you
- 19:19the bar. I'm going to say your bar and
- 19:20I'm going to I'll obviously take my hands away and then I'm going
- 19:23to go stand back and relax. I'm not going to go on my phone.
- 19:25I'm going to make it seem like I couldn't.
- 19:26I might as well be Then. I'm just going to watch very.
- 19:29Mental, the mental psychology I'm going to watch that believes
- 19:32in me. If this person is getting close
- 19:34to the number they said and they look fine, then I might be like,
- 19:37Yep, Yep. Like quietly.
- 19:40I'm not trying to speak over your music.
- 19:41If you've got music here, I will listen out for if they go one
- 19:44more, two more because they might be like, oh, I'm having a
- 19:47good set. I'm actually going to go for two
- 19:48more and I'm like, cool. If I start to see them slow
- 19:51down, then I'll put my hat. If you're watching this, you can
- 19:53see. But if there's an imaginary bar
- 19:55here, I'll put one hand over under and I'll just have it out,
- 19:59but nowhere near the bar. Once they go down and when they
- 20:02start coming back up, I'm like Yep.
- 20:04And then I'm just waiting and it like you said, if the bar goes
- 20:07down, then I'm there. But again, I'm not yanking it
- 20:11off you. I'm helping you until you say
- 20:13Nah and then I'm going to actually try and take some
- 20:15weight. That's a that's a that's an
- 20:17experience spotter that someone who's done it before and but I
- 20:20would I would never also then go they've done, they told me
- 20:22they're doing a set of eight and they've done 8 reps I'm never
- 20:25going to be like. One more bro.
- 20:27I'm I'm never interfering with their training and be like, you
- 20:29should do more, just like I'm probably helping back into the
- 20:32rack and then I'm never speaking to you again.
- 20:34Question. Be quickly scenario based.
- 20:37You're spotting someone for bench, they're going for a very
- 20:39heavyweight. They ask you to come over, they
- 20:41go death grip. Do you say anything?
- 20:44No. Do you prepare any differently?
- 20:47I might be on more high alert but probably not that mean.
- 20:51They're probably freaking strong if they're doing that the only.
- 20:53Reason I ask this question is I was at my university gym someone
- 20:56was going for a personal best of 120 kilograms which was a
- 21:00personal best by 10 kilos which they felt like they were ready
- 21:02for. To be fair they went death grip.
- 21:05They chose not to go for me as a swasso.
- 21:07They chose a friend and they re rack.
- 21:10They sorry they took it off the rack as they started doing them
- 21:13push up slipped out of the house and landed on my forehead
- 21:16knurling mark on the forehead. Crazy crazy to go on a night out
- 21:20with that as well. But yeah, no death grip changed
- 21:23my life that day. Have you got any grime?
- 21:26My gears. I feel like I offloaded a.
- 21:27Lot I mean that was that was a good grime, my gear like an
- 21:30impromptu spotting grime my gear that's good.
- 21:32But I do I do have one and it's been coming up.
- 21:35This may be out of jealousy, but people posting their golf round
- 21:39on Strava. I don't know if you've seen
- 21:41that. And it's like it comes up as a
- 21:42heat map of them doing their golf round.
- 21:44And I'm like Strava, it's for running, it's for a little bit
- 21:48of cycling, even swimming. Hide it off your feed.
- 21:51There's no route, there's no map.
- 21:53I don't want to. I want to see a map and I want
- 21:55to see some stuff. I don't want to see you shooting
- 21:57125 rather. I was going to say the opposite.
- 22:02I think it's acceptable if your handicap is like higher than 30
- 22:08because I think that's funny then to look at because it's
- 22:10just like zigzagging you. Can't even really see that all
- 22:13you see is like the heat map of you.
- 22:15You've you've clearly played eighteen holes.
- 22:17And I know there's like gold function on most smartwatches,
- 22:20but I just don't think it has a place on Strava unless unless
- 22:24you like legit have done the worst or best round of your
- 22:28life. I mean the worst around more
- 22:30funny, but like people aren't putting enough effort into their
- 22:33Strava either. Now I got rid of Instagram, I
- 22:36spend even more time on Strava and I'm like I'm curating my
- 22:40posts, I'm having a think about the caption, I'm putting a meme
- 22:42in there as well. I'll get 9 kudos for my freaking
- 22:46all my effort. But other people just like.
- 22:48Morning run. It's possibly the oldest thing
- 22:51you've ever said is that I'm really putting effort into my
- 22:54Strava. I'm curating my Strava
- 22:57Instagram. That's not the kids.
- 22:58Yeah, I'm not even embarrassed about it.
- 23:00I love my Strava. Well, let's move on to unless
- 23:04you've got anything else, let's let's move on to today's topic.
- 23:07So today's topic, pretty apartment.
- 23:09We discussed similar sorts of things last year, but we thought
- 23:13we'd come back around and take a slightly different approach in
- 23:17giving bits of advice on what to do with your training this year,
- 23:21especially if you're going after something new, whether that's a
- 23:24different set of goals, a different sport entirely or
- 23:26you're new to the idea of training completely.
- 23:29And do you want to kick us off with this one?
- 23:31Yeah, it's it's a nice one. I think going into the new year.
- 23:35I mean, we spoke about this in depth last year on the podcast.
- 23:38I don't like resolutions necessarily, but I like having
- 23:41goals. And I think everyone should have
- 23:42a goal. But it's so contextual when you
- 23:45talk about training because like you say, some people might have
- 23:48loads of training experience, but they might be starting
- 23:50something new, or you might be just getting into fitness and
- 23:53that's your new thing. But definitely having some
- 23:56goals. And we don't have to go into it
- 23:58too deeply, but making sure your goals are actually like
- 24:02realistic. And we have that anagram
- 24:04framework. Is it smart?
- 24:06Smart. Do you know the SM?
- 24:09You've got it. I know you've got it.
- 24:11Smart is sensible, specific, specific, measurable,
- 24:19attainable, or achievable realistic time.
- 24:23Based, yeah, timely. And then do you know there's
- 24:25like an add on if you want to go smarter?
- 24:28Do you have the E and the R in the locker?
- 24:31Not a chance. So evaluate is the E and then
- 24:34reward is the R. So you can make it a slightly
- 24:37longer anagram. But I mean, it feels like
- 24:39overkill, but it is a nice way if you're going, OK, what do I
- 24:42want out of my training? Especially I think if you're
- 24:45newer to the gym and you're like, my goal this year is to
- 24:49get fitter. And I'm going to do that through
- 24:51going to the gym, having some like bite size manageable chunks
- 24:55along the way to actually measure or give you some
- 24:58tangible progress to see, OK, I'm getting fitter.
- 25:01What does fitness mean? Like for for some people, fitter
- 25:04might just be getting stronger. For some people, it might be
- 25:06aerobic fitness or I might have a goal.
- 25:08I want to do a 5K in X time or whatever it happens to be.
- 25:11So it's like, it's nice to have a framework for setting goals,
- 25:14and I think that's a really useful way of doing it.
- 25:16Yeah, I think a lot of people will dive into achieving for
- 25:23some, for some people they, they choose a goal, but then don't
- 25:25really think about what needs to change around that.
- 25:27And if you take the example, and we've mentioned this one last
- 25:31year, but a very common one is people try and get into running
- 25:33as a way to get fit. Some people say I'm going to do
- 25:37cash to 5K, which we've discussed before is just one
- 25:40method to get to running that distance.
- 25:43Other people will go. I think I'm just going to get
- 25:45into running and different approaches work for different
- 25:49people, but there's not necessarily always the
- 25:54consideration to make that possible.
- 25:57And when I say that if I'm going to go and do a gym session now,
- 26:01as someone that's been going to the gym a lot before, it's
- 26:04really hard for me to leave the house if my rucksack isn't
- 26:07somewhere near the door. I know where my trainers are, I
- 26:10know that I've got some sort of fuel snack in the bag.
- 26:13I've got the right clothes on or at least in the bag.
- 26:16If those things aren't done, then it's really hard for me to
- 26:19get out the door. If they are, it's actually
- 26:22really not that hard. But if I was going in completely
- 26:25afresh, just like I'm going to start going to the gym all this
- 26:27year. The one thing I probably
- 26:28wouldn't say in attachment to that sentence is by always
- 26:32making sure my gym bag is ready or that it's always in a
- 26:35convenient location. And I think that's one of the
- 26:38things that people underestimate and underestimate is if you, if
- 26:42you see all of the cringy quotes that are online, it's like the
- 26:46biggest thing that you achieve when you run X marathon time is
- 26:50the person you became to do it. But like, that's actually so
- 26:53true. You change as a person to
- 26:55achieve something, and you need to think about how you need to
- 26:57change as a person in order to be able to achieve it in the
- 26:59first place. Or like the best gym is the most
- 27:02convenient gym because if the gym is it's so inconvenient to
- 27:06get to if a if a water. Pipe we're talking about my my
- 27:10local gym has been closed for 9 days now.
- 27:15Yeah, that is really tough. Yeah.
- 27:17Yeah. Anyway, so yeah, like on point.
- 27:20So it's just like make sure that when you're getting into
- 27:24whatever your new activity is, you have some way of actually
- 27:28tracking progress. And I think it's very easy.
- 27:30When you do start, you obviously have much higher motivation
- 27:34you're talking about now going to the gym can sometimes be
- 27:36difficult, but you've been doing it for so long that sometimes
- 27:40the motivation is difficult and it can be tedious when you start
- 27:43something new. Everything's really fresh and
- 27:45it's like me getting into gut health and wanting to grow my
- 27:48own bacteria to make ferment my own yogurt.
- 27:50Like the motivation is high and I want to do that, but in five
- 27:54years time, am I still going to have that same motivation?
- 27:56That was a really niche example. So it's like, don't do, I think
- 28:00don't do too much too soon and give yourself lots of time to
- 28:04rest and recover. And basically, don't lead
- 28:07yourself to burn out, because that could be a surefire way of
- 28:11making your goals not happen. I want to take an example of
- 28:14something that I saw happen recently, but there's there's
- 28:18numerous examples in sport of 1 athlete switching to a different
- 28:20sport and actually been pretty good at it.
- 28:22We've actually done episodes on it.
- 28:23They're more sort of different sports when you're looking at
- 28:25Michael Jordan going from basketball to baseball.
- 28:28But if we take it from the approach of a fitness level
- 28:31where an example that I'm aware of recently was Max Whitlock did
- 28:36some work with runner. Max Whitlock is a famous three
- 28:39time Olympic champion and world champion at the pommel horse in
- 28:44gymnastics. He retired from gymnastics a
- 28:48while ago and and recently Runner decided to do a six week
- 28:51plan to help him improve his five kilometre running time.
- 28:55And so his initial test and I really I had the chance to speak
- 28:59to him. I don't think he sandbagged
- 29:01this, but he ran a 2940 something and his first five
- 29:05kilometre attempt. And then six weeks later we
- 29:08retested with Runner. I think it's out on YouTube,
- 29:11especially by this point it should be.
- 29:12You can watch it if you don't like spoilers.
- 29:15Skip ahead 10 seconds. But he ran it in 20 minutes and
- 29:1922 seconds, which is taking a third of his time off, which is
- 29:22crazy impressive. If he took the same amount of
- 29:25time off again, he'd have a world record.
- 29:27Put that into perspective. But he wasn't coming from an
- 29:30experienced background in fitness of 0, whereas some
- 29:33people might be when they're doing Couch to 5K.
- 29:36You then take the likes and we've already mentioned him this
- 29:38podcast, but Charlie, people might start this year and go,
- 29:42I'm not doing enough zone two. I've seen it all over the
- 29:45Internet for high rocks. Everybody's doing Zone 2, all
- 29:47runners, anything with cycling and Iron Man's, all they're
- 29:51doing is zone 2. Easy work.
- 29:52I'm just going to do loads of it.
- 29:54You can't sit on a bike for four hours a day.
- 29:57You can't sit on a bike probably for an hour a day.
- 29:59When you start doing it, your body would get very, very
- 30:01fatigued by trying to stay in zone 2.
- 30:05If your aerobic fitness is generally good because you're
- 30:07not adapted to the bike. Take someone like Charlie who
- 30:10comes from a professional cycling background. 4 hours on a
- 30:13bike is actually an easy day. Six hours is what he was used
- 30:16to. So he can do that and his bodies
- 30:19can. His body can handle it quite
- 30:21well because that's his experience in that field.
- 30:23So if you're taking on a new sport or a new fitness plan
- 30:27routine, you've got new goals for the year, ask yourself right
- 30:31now, are you actually conditioned for it?
- 30:34And I think that's one massive, massive thing when you look at
- 30:37sports like High Rocks. When I moved over to High Rocks,
- 30:38I thought I was going to be great at it because I was like,
- 30:40I'm strong and I've always been able to run.
- 30:42Wow, was I wrong. And then even when I've tried to
- 30:45do other things, just different sports that I am kind of
- 30:49shifting fitness away from High Rock style training into, I'm
- 30:53like, I'm actually not that well prepared for that.
- 30:56And so I'm sort of personally in in like a middle ground at the
- 30:59moment where I, I can do everything.
- 31:00I'm just not like. General adaptation rather than
- 31:02like the specific stuff. Exactly, And so if you're you
- 31:06might have a background of various sports, but if you're
- 31:08going to be picking and going down the route of one particular
- 31:10sport or a couple of particular sports this year, you can't
- 31:13really take the approach that just because you were good at it
- 31:15once or just because you are fit in your head that you should be
- 31:18able to take on the load similar to other people that you maybe
- 31:21even know. You've really got to tease your
- 31:24body into the adaptations. I think that's a nice, a nice
- 31:28little bit piece of advice. And I'd also caveat that with if
- 31:32you're getting into the gym is like your specific, I want to
- 31:35get a bit fitter and healthier. If you're going to focus on
- 31:37anything, it's just focusing on basics.
- 31:39I do the basics well and that's in all facets of your health,
- 31:44whether that's actual the physical fitness side or like
- 31:47the recovery side as well. Just do the basics really well,
- 31:51get good intensity, prioritize pain free range of motion and
- 31:56just stay flexible and mobile basically.
- 31:58And then around that, eat good, sleep good.
- 32:01It's, it's like, I know it's easier said than done, but it's
- 32:04like those are the basics and if you can do those, you will lead
- 32:07a much healthier, better life, I think.
- 32:09Tell you one thing that I'm personally focusing a lot this
- 32:12year is my lower body training. I've noticed really ever since I
- 32:17got into running, which doesn't necessarily mean there's any
- 32:19correlation, but my lower body strength is quite frankly been
- 32:23poo since I switched over from American football where it was
- 32:26one of the main things that I was I was focusing on.
- 32:29And I look back at the sessions that I was doing when I was
- 32:31training for American football and I used to train legs two to
- 32:35three times a week, the intensity of which wasn't crazy.
- 32:41I would have heavy weeks, D load, that kind of thing and do
- 32:44different things across each session.
- 32:46But one of the really prevalent things for me wasn't just like
- 32:50mobility in a general sense, but I would do a lot of pauses right
- 32:56at the bottom of the squat. And I think about it now and
- 32:59yeah, I'm a bit older, but I'm not actually old.
- 33:03When I get up in the morning, if I was to try and get into a deep
- 33:06squat and let's say I was training first thing, it would
- 33:08take me 15 minutes to really warm up my lower body enough to
- 33:12be comfortable and pain free to do a full range of motion squat,
- 33:16probably even a body weight. And that's because I've let that
- 33:19slip for a while and I probably got stiffer and I'm not doing
- 33:22it. My mobility is regularly, but
- 33:24I've started to say I really wish I was squatting, you know,
- 33:27twice a week per for me because I had so much benefit of that in
- 33:31my training. I was getting so much stronger,
- 33:33so much more quickly and I haven't even been in like a body
- 33:38weight deep squat position for so.
- 33:42Long, yeah. Full cup, that's really cute.
- 33:48He's having a dream. He is having a dream.
- 33:54No, they wouldn't have died. I know, because if it happens
- 33:56again, we'll just. Yeah.
- 33:57Yeah, I'm. Not going to make high contact
- 33:58with you, but we'll power. So one of the things that I'm
- 34:03trying to do more and I'll mention it and this is this
- 34:06means I've got to hold myself accountable to it is I'm
- 34:09actually going to try and just sit in a squat position way more
- 34:11often. And like not even be at the gym,
- 34:14But if I'm doing my teeth or something like that, I'll just
- 34:17sit there for like 20 to 30 seconds.
- 34:18Because I'll tell you right now, you might be hearing me and
- 34:20going, what's he talking about? Do it right now and tell me it's
- 34:23comfortable. Yeah, I mean, I'm sure there'll
- 34:26be a lot of people who will be able to just sit down to the
- 34:28bottom of the squat and go. What you talking about?
- 34:31But there's there's so much research about like genetics and
- 34:36how deep set your hips are. And people from different places
- 34:39have better mobility. And culturally there's more
- 34:42aptitude to squatting because that's how people still go to
- 34:46the toilet or that's still how people sit and eat.
- 34:48They sit in the squat position and like definitely in Western
- 34:51culture and civilization, that's very quickly conditioned out of
- 34:56you to sit in a chair. But like, as primal as it
- 34:59sounds, literally our ancestors, however many hundreds of
- 35:03thousands of years ago, when they went to go to the toilet,
- 35:06they squatted. Well, even even if you go to
- 35:08different cultures in the world, so had the benefit of travelling
- 35:11Asia, but if you go to Asia, a lot of the street vendors and
- 35:13just the locals, when they have nothing bad to do, they just sit
- 35:17on their ankles. It's a resting Asian sit.
- 35:19Yeah. Asian squat, Yeah.
- 35:20Yeah, it's it is a resting position.
- 35:22So the fact that you're going, it's so uncomfortable.
- 35:25I can't sit down there for longer than a minute.
- 35:27It's like you do need to spend longer doing that.
- 35:31And I that probably plays into I've mentioned it before, but
- 35:34like a little bit of a back flare up that I have, but
- 35:37because your eye it. Doesn't tie and it's your back
- 35:39is so good at compensating for tightness and elsewhere.
- 35:43Yeah, honestly. Like it's a very easy quick fix
- 35:48without giving unsolicited physio advice.
- 35:50And it's like the easiest way to just get looser and more mobile.
- 35:53It's just like sitting in the squat.
- 35:55I would be interested to know, but I would relatively safely
- 35:57say I don't think if you're listening to this wondering if
- 36:01that is a good idea or not. I don't think anyone's going to
- 36:04say that sitting with no added weight on your ankles or trying
- 36:07to get into a deep squat position a couple of times a day
- 36:10for like 30 seconds. Don't think anyone's going to
- 36:13say that's bad for you. I think it's a classic.
- 36:15It's like I challenge you guys every time you go to put the
- 36:18kettle on or you go to put the microwave on, within reason,
- 36:22you're like cooking a jacket potato.
- 36:23You're like 25 minutes later, go and just go squat position.
- 36:28I had a client ages ago who's just getting into fitness and
- 36:31like really, really deconditioned and we did
- 36:34something similar a couple of weeks in.
- 36:36We went every time you turn the kettle on, we're going to do a
- 36:38plank. And like, that was just some
- 36:40general extra fitness that they did.
- 36:42But it, it started to make a almost like game of five
- 36:45fitness. And I think that's the way you
- 36:46get people to stay engaged and enjoy it a bit more.
- 36:49But. And also what's more
- 36:50embarrassing, because some people be like, no, that's quite
- 36:52embarrassing. If you can't if, if I can't even
- 36:54do a squat with my body weight or get in that position and it
- 36:57hurts, like that's quite embarrassing.
- 36:59Is it more embarrassing that it hurts for like 2 weeks if that?
- 37:03Or is it more embarrassing that you just can't do it at all?
- 37:06Because if you don't do something about it, you're never
- 37:08going to be able to do something about it.
- 37:10And you'll be 50 if you're lucky, getting pain going up the
- 37:14stairs because that angle is too much.
- 37:17No, it's a it's a really good point.
- 37:19And also, like, we could talk about this for ages and ages and
- 37:22ages, but my nephew, who's must be 3 now, when he's playing
- 37:26around with his toys every now and again, he just sits and
- 37:29squats. Perfect squat.
- 37:31His torso has really nice inclination.
- 37:34He's like the perfect lumbar position in his lower back.
- 37:36His knees are in line with his toes.
- 37:38He's never been taught that. It's just genetics.
- 37:40And it's like for him, it's I'm playing with my toys, I'm having
- 37:43a good time, stand straight back up.
- 37:45If I do that, my knees click and they're like groaning.
- 37:48It's just like we're being conditioned out of that as a
- 37:50resting position. So yeah, it's really
- 37:53interesting. It's really interesting.
- 37:54I'm glad you brought it up. When, when we're looking at
- 37:57other classic things that people do at the beginning of the year
- 37:59is not only do they necessarily try these new trends we
- 38:02mentioned on the last episode, things like 75 hard and 45
- 38:05forward, but people don't try trends.
- 38:08But people are all too quick to hop on, not necessarily even
- 38:12shortcut investments, but things that they can invest in to make
- 38:16the whole process easier. And there's two very big sides
- 38:21to this argument in that there are some incredible investments
- 38:24you can make to really make things easier.
- 38:26And they're quite personal specific, but then there's also
- 38:29some, pretty much there's some scams or there's some things
- 38:33that just do not work for a lot of people, but you need to be
- 38:35very, very aware of before you get involved.
- 38:39Is there anything that immediately jumps to mind that
- 38:40might be a good or a bad investment?
- 38:42And I think so, I guess it just does depend, again, context
- 38:46wise, what you're training for and what your goals are.
- 38:48But I think the first thing that people gravitate towards in the
- 38:51fitness industry or a push to gravitate towards is like
- 38:55supplementation, whether that's protein powder or creatine or
- 38:58electrolytes or green powder or you name it, there's a powder
- 39:03for it. I think the first thing that you
- 39:05have great night. Out.
- 39:07That's so terrible. I'm sure that will be left in.
- 39:12I'm like trying to be all professor.
- 39:15So I think it's the most important thing and I mentioned
- 39:18it a second ago. It's like focus on a whole
- 39:21balanced diet before you start supplementing on top of it.
- 39:25It's like just, yeah, kind of like trying to Polish a turd is
- 39:30maybe not the best phrase for it, but it's like if your diet
- 39:32isn't right, then there's so much like so much more nutrient
- 39:37value that you can get from your diet by just improving it.
- 39:40Rather than going my diet's a bit shit, I'm just going to
- 39:43start supplementing on top of that.
- 39:45Maybe protein powder is a good way if you can't get sufficient
- 39:48protein in your diet because relatively protein powder is
- 39:51quite cheap for what you get it for.
- 39:53But other than that, I just stay clear of supplements and going
- 39:56down that rabbit hole until you've nailed your your actual
- 39:59diet. Yeah, I think that's a good
- 40:01point. I just want to backtrack as
- 40:02well. Like don't condone any form of
- 40:04drug. Don't.
- 40:06But one of the other powders that we have mentioned is
- 40:09creatine. That's very low cost, easy to
- 40:13add into your diet. Again, is some a substance that
- 40:16you can get naturally from things like red meat, but.
- 40:20Like you said, if your diet is wrong, then you're not really
- 40:22going to have any protein. I mean, you can add 20 grams of
- 40:25protein by having some protein powder, but is that going to
- 40:27take you from where you're currently at and your lifestyle
- 40:29you're currently at and being the absolute epitome of who you
- 40:32want to be? No.
- 40:33I think it's interesting that you bring up creatine because I
- 40:36will have to backtrack now because that might be one of the
- 40:39ones where I go actually. That has so much benefit, not
- 40:43just for your training, just generally and like your brain
- 40:46function as well. And there's so much research on
- 40:48it. It's like the first thing that
- 40:49people jump towards when they're talking about creatine.
- 40:51They're like, it's the most research supplement and it's
- 40:54probably true. And it's like, I would recommend
- 40:56it to everyone and anyone, but I would also recommend doing your
- 40:59own research around it before you start taking it.
- 41:01So that might be 1, but I just, I don't want people to who are
- 41:04getting into fitness and getting into training to go all right, I
- 41:07need to start supplementing because you don't.
- 41:09There's so much value from just improving your diet, improving
- 41:13your sleep and just training more and training more
- 41:15consistently, especially if you're new to it.
- 41:18All the newbie games that you get in the first couple of
- 41:20months, it's like huge you're. Going to play devil's advocate,
- 41:24yeah, yeah, a little bit on that.
- 41:25I, I agree. I think there are so many
- 41:28sports, especially within the fitness space, you don't really
- 41:30need to buy anything to start and try it.
- 41:33But if you are going into a new year and you know that you're
- 41:36going to be doing something slightly different and you think
- 41:40maybe if I buy these supplements, you know, that
- 41:42might actually make me. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:44And for example, with me, I get, I, I understand that the benefit
- 41:48of taking creatine really only, it only matters as much as it
- 41:52does, or at least it compounds if you are consistent in taking
- 41:54it on an everyday basis. So if I am going to be taking
- 41:58creatine, then I should not be wasting some of the potential
- 42:01benefits in my training if I don't train and I'm going to
- 42:04take it anyway. So it almost is an additional
- 42:07motivation so I can actually do it.
- 42:09So if you, if you need something like that, maybe it's worth
- 42:11considering. I also mentioned I think a
- 42:14couple of months ago I bought pre workout again because I was
- 42:17like, I kind of liked the whole process and I'm very much like
- 42:20this. If I'm about to start to do
- 42:21something, whether that's work or a session, I like to have
- 42:24something that triggers me being in that process, not arriving at
- 42:28my desk or arriving at the gym and being like, OK, it's go
- 42:30time. I like to kick start a bit
- 42:32before get myself in the headspace.
- 42:34Boom on that. Whether or not the pre workout
- 42:36really does much for me. I mean, you could probably just
- 42:38give me a placebo. I mean, I'm itchy as hell, so
- 42:40it's not placebo, but you could give me a placebo drink or
- 42:44something for work. You see other nootropic drinks
- 42:48that are appearing? I would argue that's probably
- 42:49what they are. If I have one of those, I'm
- 42:51like, I'm about to smash out some work.
- 42:53I'm about to have a great gym session.
- 42:55Maybe that's worth a go if you feel like you need a bit more
- 42:57motivation to do something that you're not currently doing, or
- 42:59something you want to change. And it's like if you struggling
- 43:04with motivations goes to the gym and you have free workout, you
- 43:06can't then just go and sit on the sofa.
- 43:09It's like I have to go to the gym now because otherwise this
- 43:12is going to be a weird night. The.
- 43:13Other thing that I would potentially say as an investment
- 43:16that I would consider avoiding is buying loads of equipment for
- 43:20your home. We see at the moment consumerism
- 43:24and manufacturing is going crazy and you can buy like what's the
- 43:29really trendy fitness thing that are in classes with beds with
- 43:34springs, Reformer, reformer Pilates.
- 43:38You can buy reformer Pilates in supermarkets.
- 43:41Are they coming in the middle of little or in ALDI, whatever.
- 43:44And people get them for home because they're now going to be
- 43:47into reformer Pilates. Guarantee you that you get that
- 43:50thing out and even if it is good quality, it doesn't quite give
- 43:53the same vibe and energy of the lovely boutique gym space with
- 43:57your friends and that sort of thing.
- 43:58And it it can seem like I love that thing, I want to do that
- 44:03thing, I'm going to get it at home and I'm going to do it all
- 44:05the time. And in actual fact, it has the
- 44:07opposite effect. The only time I would say that
- 44:09is a good investment. And I can speak personally on
- 44:11this. I've always said that I probably
- 44:12wouldn't want a home gym. But when times get really busy
- 44:15with work and when my gym is shut, for example, I'm really
- 44:18glad that I did buy some sort of machine where I can go and sit
- 44:21on a bike in the dry as well. That's really beneficial for
- 44:26half an hour and get that done or for an hour, whatever.
- 44:29And Charlie bottle 4 hours I'll try.
- 44:31But. Like that's that's.
- 44:35An investment that I made that again, I'm quite experienced in
- 44:39my training now, so I wouldn't have just done that.
- 44:41It was quite calculated. And that's what I'm saying.
- 44:44If you're if you're not or you're seeing something new and
- 44:47you think I'm going to buy all the things for it.
- 44:49I think that is like a good thing to bring up because it's
- 44:51very easy and like obviously if you're going into a hobby where
- 44:55it's like, OK, I'm going to start jiu jitsu or something
- 44:58similar where you like there's specific items of clothing that
- 45:01I need to wear for training or similar.
- 45:04I mean, it can be anything. It's like you can't start
- 45:06playing tennis if you don't have a tennis racket.
- 45:09So it's like there are certain things that you need to invest
- 45:11in. But let's see say more broadly
- 45:13you're getting into fitness. The easiest thing to get into is
- 45:17probably running. If you're keen to get into
- 45:19fitness. The only thing really that you
- 45:21need like really is a pair of running trainers, whether you go
- 45:25for like a really expensive pair or really cheap pair.
- 45:28You don't even need an expensive.
- 45:29Pair, as long as it's like as long as it's going to support
- 45:31your foot and it's not going to cause any knee or hip pain, then
- 45:34you've got a pair of trainers, right?
- 45:36So it's like you don't have to go and start investing in lots
- 45:39of different things. I'd say if you're going to
- 45:41invest in your fitness, you want a gym membership that's probably
- 45:44a month. It like an expense that you're
- 45:47going to have to kind of swallow if you're going to get into
- 45:50fitness. But other than that, like you
- 45:52can stay clear of most things for a long time.
- 45:55And then maybe you'd be like, OK, I'm going to give myself 6
- 45:58to 8 months. Am I going to stick with this
- 46:00hobby? If the answer is yes, OK, I'm
- 46:01going to buy a better tennis racket or I'm going to buy
- 46:04better equipment. It's like the same getting into
- 46:06something like golf, it's such a rabbit hole and you start
- 46:09looking at it and you go, that's expensive, but you can get a
- 46:13cheap set of clubs and you can use them.
- 46:15Like when I started playing golf, got a cheap set of clubs,
- 46:18I think my parents reluctantly bought them for me because
- 46:20they're like, no way is this going to stick.
- 46:22And I use those clubs until they literally fell apart because I
- 46:25just loved it and I'd play all the time.
- 46:27And then it's like, OK, I've proved that this is something
- 46:30that I'm going to do and something that I want to do.
- 46:32And then it's like, OK, I actually can't afford to play
- 46:35golf, but I've ruined my clubs. But it's like then you can start
- 46:39to invest in yourself and in in the sport that you want to do.
- 46:42I've been I've been thinking as we've been talking Possibly
- 46:45there's there's two big things that I think are good
- 46:48investments. One I know that you'll agree
- 46:50with if if in doubt or you're approaching something new
- 46:54coaching yeah, get someone that knows more than you Yeah, yeah.
- 46:57Get someone not not necessarily knows more than you, but will
- 47:01manage things for you and get the best out of you is always a
- 47:04coach. You're always going to be better
- 47:05when you're coached, which is something that is a really hard
- 47:07pill for me to swallow because I haven't been coached in a long
- 47:09time And I, I'm still like, it's a mental thing for me where I'm
- 47:14like, I should be coached, but then I'm also like, but I don't
- 47:18know if I want to be right now. And that's a, that's a personal
- 47:21thing. But I know for a fact that money
- 47:25no object and time no object, everything like that, I would
- 47:28have a coach tomorrow and it would make a massive, massive
- 47:32difference today. The accountability side of it,
- 47:34as well as the benefit in knowledge and offloading some of
- 47:38the mental athlete having to understand how I'm supposed to
- 47:41achieve my own. The other thing this, this will
- 47:45be interesting because this is really unlike me.
- 47:48If you have a bit of spending money after Christmas and you're
- 47:51thinking I really wanted to buy that reformer bed but now I've
- 47:53been told I can't, what should I do?
- 47:57Just get a new outfit? Go go down the fashion route.
- 48:02It doesn't have to be new training I.
- 48:03Wasn't expecting that. But genuinely I'm thinking every
- 48:07time I bought something new to wear to the gym or wear for a
- 48:11specific session, it's made me want to do the session.
- 48:14Not every time, but like if I buy, if I, if I bought like a
- 48:17really nice T-shirt for the gym or for like running or
- 48:19something, I'm not thinking I can't wait to run in it of that
- 48:23one time. I'm thinking like that's great
- 48:25for running. Yeah, I know.
- 48:27I get what you're saying. I'm, I'm, I'm, yeah, I just,
- 48:29I'm, I'm more, I'm more surprised that it's you.
- 48:32I know that advice ME3. Yeah, that's kind of.
- 48:35Look good feel good 2026. Wait Look good, feel good, feel
- 48:41good, Live good, live good pay, good pay.
- 48:46I've messed it up. There's a great quote by the
- 48:49Lift. Laugh, laugh.
- 48:50Something along those lines anyway.
- 48:53I mean, are there any other investments that you think are
- 48:56worth mentioning? I think those are like we've
- 48:58covered the covered the P6. OK, cool.
- 49:02The outfit which? Means then we need to put our
- 49:06silly hats back on. Yeah, we've got we've got the
- 49:09game. So we we've brought ourselves
- 49:11here this time you're bringing the game.
- 49:14And after last week, where there was actually a massive
- 49:18improvement in your score in the game, as everyone will have
- 49:21heard and seen, you've decided to take revenge on me.
- 49:27You outed me on the podcast, so if you don't understand that
- 49:31reference, you're going to have to go back and watch the
- 49:33previous previous episode. I mean, there's a catch 22 here
- 49:37because I've I've, I've told Angus, he doesn't know what the
- 49:40game is. We always keep it as a surprise.
- 49:42I've kind of explained to him the premise and I've said it's
- 49:45kind of evil. And the problem with that is
- 49:48that you can very easily next episode just do something
- 49:51similar to me and make it evil to me.
- 49:53I also did say that Angus is going to be very good at it.
- 49:56All right, so let me explain the game.
- 49:58This is so I've given it a name, all right?
- 50:00I've called it hot take roulette, which I like.
- 50:03Sounds great. That could be a segment, right?
- 50:05OK. Well, it's a hot take roulette.
- 50:07They'll be like, Jingle, I like it and everything's going to go
- 50:10what? So I'm going to give you
- 50:12basically, it could be a gimmick, A fad, something a
- 50:16trend in the fitness industry that potentially we wouldn't
- 50:19necessarily agree with. OK, but your job, and we're
- 50:24going to start with 30 seconds. Your job is to defend.
- 50:29Oh, OK, yeah. You're going to be good at this
- 50:32for sure. All right, so I think that's all
- 50:35you need for now. Maybe in the comments section on
- 50:37social media, get in touch, see if he's done a good job because
- 50:41there's no real objective scoring system.
- 50:44I mean, it's been. Like my like Jordan Belfort hat
- 50:46on can. You sell, can you sell this pen?
- 50:48So I'll get my timer off on my on my watch.
- 50:51We're going to start. The first one I want you to
- 50:53defend for 30 seconds is the grapefruit diet.
- 50:58OK, As soon as you start talking my time is running.
- 51:02The grapefruit diet, first of all, the thing that people
- 51:05struggle with most with their diet is cutting out the bad
- 51:08things. If you only have one key thing
- 51:11and key focus, it's quite simple for your brain to kind of
- 51:14understand, am I hungry? Am I not hungry?
- 51:17Because all I'm going to go for is that.
- 51:18I've actually heard someone else say they've done a similar thing
- 51:20with broccoli. If the picture comes up on their
- 51:22phone and they're really hungry and they really hungry enough to
- 51:26eat that broccoli. It's the same with the
- 51:27grapefruit, if you're going for that.
- 51:28Another thing with grapefruit is it's got so many different
- 51:30sugars and the citrus element is so healthy for you.
- 51:33Time easy. I knew you'd be good at this
- 51:36game. But I mean, I don't necessarily
- 51:38advocate the grapefruit diet. I like grapefruit.
- 51:42I'm going to be honest, I'm not even really sure what it was.
- 51:44So I know that I know. I've heard of the grapefruit
- 51:46technique. So it's totally different.
- 51:48What I noted down was the grapefruit diet.
- 51:50This is my kind of perception of it.
- 51:52It claims that grapefruit burns fat if eaten with every meal,
- 51:57which I is not true. No it's like that part.
- 52:00I think the same thing for pineapple doesn't doesn't work
- 52:03like that. No, you are.
- 52:04That's a crazy thing. So it's like, I know what you
- 52:07were trying to get at, but yeah, you did good.
- 52:09OK, Should we do the next one? Yeah.
- 52:11Have you already? Seen it?
- 52:12No, I haven't. With your 2020 vision, yeah,
- 52:15it's going to be waist trainers. So it's like a corset anywhere
- 52:20that gives you ABS whenever you start talking.
- 52:25Waist trainers have been around for centuries.
- 52:27They actually do have a physical impact on your body and it is
- 52:31one way of measuring your progress as well as kind of
- 52:35what's the, this is really difficult.
- 52:38I'm trying to think of a word. And now I'm under time pressure.
- 52:41It's passive. It's passive effort.
- 52:43So like you could be doing your cardio and everything, but the
- 52:45waist trainer is making you aware of not only your posture
- 52:48and other parts of your training that you're putting an effort
- 52:50into. And like I said, it might be a
- 52:52motivator to continue with your training if you're going to
- 52:54invest in. One time.
- 52:56So what I wrote down is corsets marketed as fat loss tools.
- 53:01It's terrible. Have you seen the Barbie Girl
- 53:05that has like trained? I think she was like Russian.
- 53:07I mean, there's a lot of plastic surgery there, but she's like
- 53:09through waist training over years has got the smallest waist
- 53:12in the world and it. She's trying to look.
- 53:14Like a Barbie. It's like a 20 centimetre waist.
- 53:17She looks like a Barbie. Really.
- 53:18He is crazy. Yeah, it's crazy.
- 53:20But they work. Should we do one more?
- 53:22Yeah. Cool.
- 53:23There's, there's going to be like so many snippets from this
- 53:25podcast where it's like these guys clearly have no idea,
- 53:28especially Angus. Angus does nothing, not at all.
- 53:33Let's go. This is this is going to fall
- 53:34night. If someone skipped by accident
- 53:36too far forward, they're like they're now getting the wildest
- 53:39investment recommendations. It's like I'll come on this for
- 53:42advice for for starting my new. Training.
- 53:44I'm going. To be grapefruits.
- 53:47Let's go. You're going to love this one.
- 53:50The vibration plate workouts. You know the drill whenever you
- 53:55start talking. I don't want to leave the people
- 53:58listening too long, but I'm going to need a little bit more
- 54:00time on this one. The old vibration plates.
- 54:04OK, I've got it. More and more trendy these days
- 54:08are far overpriced massage guns. And while using a vibration
- 54:13plate, when you sit in that squat position, you are
- 54:15activating some of those stabilizing muscles.
- 54:17And when you're holding onto the handles, you're deloading your
- 54:19body, so it's a less risk of injury.
- 54:21You're also allowing mud blood to penetrate into deeper parts
- 54:26of those muscles and aid recovery and flushing out some
- 54:29of those toxins and that sort of thing.
- 54:30They're left behind after sessions like lactate.
- 54:33So you're getting a full body massage gun at a fraction of the
- 54:36cost. It's it's like bang on 30
- 54:39seconds as well. It's like the marketing pitch
- 54:41the pre written marketing pitch, the.
- 54:42Worst thing about this is I'm half believing what I'm saying
- 54:45when I come up with that. I'm like that kind of makes
- 54:47sales you. Know toxic toxins and lactate.
- 54:50That was good. Flushing out I'm now genuinely I
- 54:52would go on sale on one and I want to know if it's going to
- 54:54make my legs feel better now. It's just going to make you shit
- 54:56yourself. That's where you're going.
- 54:59I'm going to go for the Jay Deardon 19 gels and then go
- 55:03stand on vibrating plate and see how long it takes.
- 55:05How many? Skills you can have.
- 55:06So what do they say about vibration plates?
- 55:09Stand and shake your way to ABS. Is that it?
- 55:13Is that their? Slogan in brackets, allegedly.
- 55:15No, I think that's my slogan. Oh, OK, Allegedly.
- 55:17Because your marketing pitch was way better than.
- 55:19That I was going to say, is there, is there a business
- 55:21that's known for the vibrating plate because if you're
- 55:23listening my rates are very unreasonable, but so is your
- 55:26product. So I think we can do some
- 55:28talking here. Head of Like Global Marketing.
- 55:31Global. Vibrating sales.
- 55:34I think we leave it there. I did have a few others.
- 55:35I had the superfood hype. Can you remember what, like a
- 55:38couple of years ago when everyone was raving about the
- 55:40Goji Berry? Oh.
- 55:42And it was like, I'm going to put goji berries and everything
- 55:44because it's like a superfood. If you were one of those people,
- 55:47when was the last time you had a goji Berry?
- 55:48Now who looks silly? Yeah, you.
- 55:51Then also I think the carnivore diet you'd have smashed that
- 55:54would have been quite good for you.
- 55:55Yeah, the weirdest diet I've heard of, actually.
- 55:57And the grapefruit thing threw me off and I went down this diet
- 56:02because of the grapefruit broccoli diet.
- 56:04No potatoes, really. I knew someone that ate potatoes
- 56:08for 60 days straight and all they could have was potatoes.
- 56:11That sounds incredible. Awful.
- 56:13No, no, not like chips potato like boiled potatoes.
- 56:18I was got Iggy potatoes, chips, not like you have a jacket
- 56:21potato, nothing on it, just potato, plain potato.
- 56:26And they did it two years in a row.
- 56:28I mean, it did exactly what they wanted.
- 56:29It just helped them with their weight loss because similar to
- 56:31the broccoli thing and how I said about grapefruit, they only
- 56:33had one thing to think about. So when they were like, am I
- 56:35actually hungry because I have to be hungry for potato?
- 56:38That is psychotic, yeah. They were quite a big person and
- 56:42they lost our way through it, but also.
- 56:44I mean, that's good, but it's like there's probably better
- 56:47ways to do it. Yeah, the thing that I was
- 56:49jealous of, though, and he spoke about this for like the first
- 56:52two days after he'd finished the 60 day diet.
- 56:55Food tasted amazing. So good.
- 56:57Yeah. Yeah.
- 56:58But if you could imagine, if you're just basically licking,
- 57:0160 days is a long time. Yeah, that's tough.
- 57:04Crazy. But I mean, I wouldn't recommend
- 57:05anyone does that or any of the techniques we just involved.
- 57:07But make sure you get that clear defined line from when we
- 57:10started Hot Take Roulette and when we would take the rest of
- 57:12the episode. Otherwise it's it's going to be
- 57:14a mess and we're not responsible for any of it.
- 57:17Our five star rating on Spotify, it's going no way down.
- 57:20Oh dear. Talking of which, we've moved
- 57:23some things around. For those of you that have
- 57:25noticed in the last couple of weeks, we've done a complete
- 57:27rebranding for what I might as well call a new season for the
- 57:31podcast. So we've got new logos.
- 57:33If you're watching this online or even listening, you probably
- 57:36heard that there's new intro song.
- 57:37There was a new intro in general to the YouTube or again, if
- 57:40you're watching on Spotify, which is another thing with now
- 57:43being hosted by Spotify directly, which is exciting.
- 57:46More opportunities through that, including you can now subscribe,
- 57:50follow and leave comments on Spotify.
- 57:52If we put a poll in our description.
- 57:55So if we ask you guys a specific question, you can go and answer
- 57:57on Spotify, you can engage, you can review, you can also then do
- 58:01the exact same stuff on YouTube. We're not going anywhere.
- 58:04However, if you enjoy the game so much and sometimes you're
- 58:07like, I wish I could just go and watch the game.
- 58:09I've listened to the podcast when I was at work, but I won't
- 58:11watch the game. Guess what?
- 58:13We're posting that separately. So you can go and watch that
- 58:15now, which means that's another reason to go like and subscribe.
- 58:18If you weren't aware of our goals, we've got some lofty
- 58:20goals and any subscribe and any like would be fantastic if
- 58:24you're not already doing it. Where can they find us on social
- 58:26media to follow? At Mindsets podcast, at Mindsets
- 58:30under score podcast, you put me on the spot there.
- 58:32But on all social media, all platforms, it's the same.
- 58:36It's nice and easy to to find and yeah, lots of opportunities
- 58:39to get involved. Yeah.
- 58:40And if you want to message either of us directly, you can
- 58:43go to Strava for Charles at the moment, but then you can come to
- 58:46me at Angus under Score Cook and yeah, I otherwise anything else
- 58:50from me. I don't think so.
- 58:52I think that's it. Awesome.
- 58:53In which case, I look forward to seeing you guys all next week in
- 58:56the next episode.
