- 0:00Hi everyone.
- 0:01Welcome back to the Becoming Anchored podcast for episode two.
- 0:07We are so excited that you're here with us today.
- 0:09I am Lauren Jackson.
- 0:12And I'm Laura Deneen.
- 0:14Hi.
- 0:14Yeah, welcome.
- 0:15We're so glad that you're here.
- 0:17We're two therapists in the middle Tennessee area.
- 0:21We're located in Brentwood.
- 0:23We are in a small group private practice with eight other therapists.
- 0:28So there are 10 of us total in the group.
- 0:30We primarily treat eating disorders, disordered eating at an outpatient level.
- 0:34We work with really anything and everything in between.
- 0:38Anxiety, depression, grief, loss, life transition, OCD, and then just navigating
- 0:46the difficulties of life together.
- 0:48We work with.
- 0:51Anybody through the lifespan male, female and so we just truly enjoy
- 0:56and love and honor the work that we get to do with our clients.
- 0:59And we're so excited to start this new way of connecting with you all, which
- 1:05is this platform, this podcast platform.
- 1:07So we're back for our second episode and we're really excited to, to jump into the
- 1:13content that we have for you all today.
- 1:16Yeah.
- 1:16And the
- 1:16purpose of this podcast, just to echo Lauren, is twofold.
- 1:20First, we really want to first and foremost be authentic and relatable
- 1:25and share about our lived experiences.
- 1:27And then secondly, we wanna offer some of our therapeutic wisdom.
- 1:32And so.
- 1:34You know, the Becoming Anchored podcast is really this idea
- 1:37that we have never arrived, that we can always learn and grow.
- 1:42And that's something that as a company, through Anchored Counseling
- 1:45Company, we really value in our staff.
- 1:49And, and really we, we take this posture of, I think, humility with
- 1:53our clients as well, in the sense that we're always learning and
- 1:57growing and, and we're here just to.
- 2:00Ride the ways of life and the ups and downs with y'all.
- 2:03And so that's really the purpose of this podcast.
- 2:06So today we're actually gonna be talking about navigating friendships.
- 2:10In adulthood.
- 2:14Quick disclaimer before we get started.
- 2:16We'll just say this at the beginning of every episode.
- 2:18This isn't intended to be therapy.
- 2:20This really is intended for informational purposes only.
- 2:23So though we are licensed therapist, we're not your therapist.
- 2:26If you are in the.
- 2:27Middle Tennessee, Brentwood area, and you're seeking out
- 2:30therapy, please reach out to us.
- 2:32If you do find that as you are listening and engaging with us,
- 2:35that you would benefit from your own therapy and you're not local please.
- 2:39Reach out to, to anybody local who's licensed that could help
- 2:43you in your therapeutic journey,
- 3:01navigating friendships in adulthood.
- 3:05This is a, a big topic.
- 3:07Yeah, it is, it's a tough one.
- 3:10As adults particularly when you are an adult and you're trying to make friends
- 3:16there can, I, I often find with some of my adult clients, there's shame around
- 3:23not having like that core group of friends that you kind of have grown up
- 3:28with and have been through, you know, seasons in life with, through high school
- 3:32and college, and you're still this.
- 3:34Group of best friends, which is so great that, that some people
- 3:40experience that and have that, and what a, what a wonderful thing, right?
- 3:45And that's not everybody's reality.
- 3:47That's not my reality.
- 3:49And I have personally felt and experienced different seasons of shame
- 3:59around that and different seasons of.
- 4:02Grief around that.
- 4:03And, and then, and then from there we, we embark on this journey of trying to
- 4:12figure out as adults, maybe with, with a family, you know, with perhaps a full-time
- 4:18job or a part-time job or, or whatnot.
- 4:21Trying to make friends and trying to figure out where,
- 4:24where to find good friends and.
- 4:28That is something that both Laura and I have had to do at
- 4:36some point in our adulthood.
- 4:37And it's not easy and it is an endeavor that is worth investing
- 4:47in.
- 4:48Yeah, the shame.
- 4:50So remember that shame is that that response that says that I
- 4:54am bad or a part of me is bad.
- 4:57I think that's really common in terms of what our clients report and even an
- 5:03emotion that I felt around friendships.
- 5:06And then I would add to that loneliness.
- 5:09I think a lot of people that are in our office are lonely and.
- 5:16That, that's just so hard.
- 5:18And you know, thinking back to when I was a little girl growing up, my husband and
- 5:24I were talking about this the other day, but it's like friends are kind of provided
- 5:27for you in school and elementary school, middle school, high school, and if you
- 5:34go to college or even further education, it's like you have this like group of
- 5:38people that's provided for you versus like when you become a working adult.
- 5:45You go to work and you go home and you may have the luxury of.
- 5:51You know, going to meet a friend for dinner, but not everyone maybe has
- 5:55that luxury or maybe they need to get home to take care of their child,
- 5:58or maybe they can't afford to go out to eat or whatever it might be.
- 6:01And so yeah, it's, it's just different when you become an adult.
- 6:05And I think these are the nuances that we as a society don't talk enough about.
- 6:11A couple things that I experienced when I first started therapy.
- 6:15I remember that I had these thoughts, maybe what we would
- 6:19call cognitive distortions.
- 6:20So another way of thinking about that is just faulty thinking.
- 6:24I thought that when I made a friend, I was supposed to be in
- 6:28relationship with that person forever, and then it was devastating
- 6:34to me when friendships ended or.
- 6:38Kind of fell away naturally because we moved out of state and we were no longer
- 6:45seeing each other on a daily basis.
- 6:48And so I had to work, I've had to work through just my own shame around those
- 6:53friendships that have maybe fallen away or friendships that haven't worked out
- 6:57where there's no longer safety in that relationship or whatever it might be.
- 7:03And even as a working mom.
- 7:06Who owns a company.
- 7:07It's a lot to, to keep up with friends in my adult life and to work full time.
- 7:14And so I would definitely say that my circle of friends has gotten
- 7:17smaller over the years and working through my own feelings around that.
- 7:21And, has just been tricky.
- 7:24And so those are some of the things that come to mind.
- 7:26So just that magical thinking of like, oh yeah, I'm supposed to be friends
- 7:29with everyone forever and you know, or I'm supposed to be best friends
- 7:33with everyone, or whatever it might be has been so true for my experience.
- 7:38Yeah, especially during my twenties.
- 7:40I'm in my, I'm in my almost mid thirties now, but that was really things that I had
- 7:44to work through in therapy in my twenties.
- 7:47Yeah.
- 7:48Yeah.
- 7:49I would imagine that some people listening can probably relate to that
- 7:54for sure, because I certainly can.
- 7:56Yeah.
- 7:56One of the, one of the friendship relational patterns that I always,
- 8:03always seems to get myself into growing up, so when I was younger,
- 8:08that followed me into adulthood was always being like the middle.
- 8:13Man, if you will, in relationships and friendships in particular.
- 8:17So somehow I always found myself in these groups of like three friends.
- 8:24So it's like I would always have like two other friends
- 8:27and I would be the middle one.
- 8:28So I would be like the peacekeeper and the, the go-between and just
- 8:34making sure that everyone was okay and maybe it wasn't always three people.
- 8:37Maybe there were some, you know, some more, but.
- 8:39But I was always the one in the middle.
- 8:41And that, I mean, this is an episode for another day, but that
- 8:44speaks to like the role I played in my family and, and all of that.
- 8:47Anyways, so that, that pattern of Peacekeeper within friendships definitely,
- 8:55like I said, followed me into adulthood and, I found myself navigating some
- 9:01tricky relational situations that I was just kind of like fed up having.
- 9:09And I remember, and so part of being that peacekeeper, which again, I'm pretty
- 9:14sure that probably there's somebody out there listening that can relate
- 9:17to that and can feel with me in that.
- 9:20But as I was navigating these friendships and I was in therapy at the time and I
- 9:26still see that same therapist some of the best advice she gave me, and I'm putting
- 9:32that in air quotes because we know that therapists are supposed give advice, but
- 9:36the best like therapy that some of the best therapy I got from her was just this
- 9:40simple idea of what if Lauren you don't like work so hard in the in, in this?
- 9:47These relationships to keep the peace and to make sure everybody's
- 9:51okay and to make sure everybody's happy because A, you're probably
- 9:54ignoring your own feelings and needs.
- 9:57And B, what is that actually, how is that actually like helping the relationship?
- 10:02'cause you're probably working harder than other people,
- 10:06the other, the other parties.
- 10:09And if, if you, you take a step back and.
- 10:13Let the relationship unfold naturally, I wonder what would happen.
- 10:17And so for me, the risk of potentially losing the relationship felt worth it
- 10:22because I was just tired of that cycle.
- 10:24Like I was just, I, I, I, I got to, it got to the point where I
- 10:26just wasn't working for me anymore.
- 10:28And so the risk was worth it.
- 10:29And sure enough, the relation, some of these relationships, I'm thinking
- 10:33of two, two people in particular, the natural progression of the
- 10:38friendships, they fizzled and and.
- 10:42Yes, there's a grief in that, and there's a part of me that feels
- 10:44some relief in that because this, I, I broke that cycle and that gives
- 10:49me room and space to have better friendships now, which is true for me.
- 10:53So I say all of that because I, our, our, because friendships as, like Laura
- 11:02was saying, as children and teens, there's a, there's a bit of an ease, an
- 11:07ease to them because they're, they're.
- 11:11We're kind of provided, if you will, the, a group of people to kind of
- 11:15choose from, to be friends with, whether that's in high school or you
- 11:18know, your dance classes or whatever.
- 11:20And then in adulthood that just isn't necessarily reality anymore.
- 11:25And so and so there's, there's more.
- 11:28It almost feels like there's a little bit more weight to the friendships
- 11:32that we have as adults because.
- 11:36There's more risk in losing friendships 'cause they're harder to find and
- 11:40there's more risk in trying to gain friendships because they're harder to get.
- 11:45And so it feels a little bit like this double edged sword.
- 11:49And and the process of it all is is worth doing that kind of inner self work around.
- 11:58Because when we do find those really good quality friendships, um, the, the
- 12:06benefit that we get from it is I don't know the word I wanna use healing.
- 12:11It's, just really profound.
- 12:14And so with all of that, I would say too that the quality of our friendships as
- 12:18an, as adults probably is more significant than the quantity of friendships that
- 12:23we have as adults, which can also be maybe a shame point for, for some
- 12:27people me included in my own experiences is navigating friendships as adults.
- 12:33It's like, oh, I only have a few really, really good friends.
- 12:38I don't have a lot of friends and.
- 12:41I'm okay with that.
- 12:43Yeah, and, and yeah, I give you permission to be okay with that too.
- 12:48Yeah.
- 12:49I love all of this and it, I think it just is so healthy because I am
- 12:54definitely someone that in the past have really focused on the quantity
- 13:00and I would say in some of that quantity there was quality, but.
- 13:04Maybe that perception piece mattered more to me than the
- 13:08quality of the relationships.
- 13:09Like are other people seeing how many friends I have in my circle?
- 13:14Yeah, I got myself.
- 13:15Just in terms of that pattern that you disclosed.
- 13:18Thank you so much for sharing that.
- 13:20I think I got myself into relationships where it was like
- 13:23too much too soon and I had these patterns of my friendships where.
- 13:30You know, then a year into the friendship, or six months or eight months or however
- 13:33long into the friendship, I started to feel bothered by things like my boundaries
- 13:39weren't respected, or I would say no, and then I would be pushed into this event.
- 13:44And that was a little bit more of my cycle, was feeling like the friendships
- 13:50were more intense versus intimate.
- 13:53And the intensity of.
- 13:55Really like diving really deeply into a friendship versus truly kind
- 14:00of testing the waters, so to speak.
- 14:03And.
- 14:04Navigating more of of life together.
- 14:07And, and some of that builds trust, right?
- 14:10That okay, I can trust this person to show up well for me, and I can
- 14:14trust that they're going to respect my boundaries and I can trust that
- 14:18it's safe to have differing opinions about things and that person loves
- 14:23me and cares for me no matter what.
- 14:25So as I look back on some of the patterns that I've done, you know, that has.
- 14:31That has stood out to me in a friendship.
- 14:34So yeah, we wanna talk about maybe ways to just really evaluate your friendships.
- 14:40I had a supervisor when I was first becoming a therapist and in my early
- 14:46days as a therapist who talked to me about, I was going through a change
- 14:51in a friendship, and I remember she just, I think I was crying in a
- 14:54supervision session with her and she just really spoke into me just around.
- 14:58Hey, Laura, some of our, our friends are going to be our leaf friends.
- 15:02Some are gonna be our branch friends, some are gonna be the
- 15:05trunks, some are gonna be the roots.
- 15:07And so I loved this picture that she provided because it was so validating for
- 15:13my experience that some people naturally, when the seasons change, they fall away.
- 15:20And then we have.
- 15:21Maybe more people that are with us for, hopefully for our lifetime
- 15:25that are more the root friends.
- 15:27And that just gave me permission.
- 15:28I think you used that word before, Lauren or something along those lines,
- 15:31but permission to be okay with, okay, I'm gonna have some people that are more
- 15:36my root in my trunk friends, and then some people are just gonna naturally
- 15:39be in my life for a season and I can.
- 15:42I can be grateful for that season.
- 15:44And I can also maybe challenge myself not to sit in shame that they're more
- 15:48of a branch friend or a leaf friend.
- 15:51So that analogy, that picture of that tree was really freeing
- 15:56and a part of my journey just in navigating friendships as an adult.
- 16:01Yeah.
- 16:02And I, something that going along with this analogy.
- 16:09That has been helpful for me too in adulthood and in navigating friendships
- 16:17and trying to make some friends because we all have this internal
- 16:25desire and need to connect with people and to connect with different kinds.
- 16:29Of people right outside of love, connecting with my husband.
- 16:33I love connecting with my mom and dad 'cause they live so close and, and, and
- 16:37there's a part of me that's, that wants to connect with girlfriends, right?
- 16:42Like just my friends or a friend.
- 16:46And, and giving myself permission to kind of let go of this.
- 16:54Belief that any friend that I have, kind of like Laura was saying earlier, earlier
- 17:01on in the episode, any friend that I have, I have to be friends with him for forever.
- 17:05Right?
- 17:06Or any friend that I have as an adult has to be really, really deep
- 17:12and has to be really, really, we have to be really, really close.
- 17:16There, I, I, I'm, I find, and I'm finding that there are
- 17:19actually times and places that.
- 17:22I'm, I am in need of like a branch friend, or I am in need of, I
- 17:29am in need of a leaf friend.
- 17:31And, and, and that, that type of connection or that type of encounter is,
- 17:42can be just as significant and is just as significant as in, in developing.
- 17:51And cultivating a, a really deep friendship with someone.
- 17:54And so, and so giving myself permission as an adult to let branch
- 18:06friends be branch friends and that that's okay has been helpful for me.
- 18:12Yeah, it's like it takes the pressure off, right?
- 18:15Yeah.
- 18:15Like, yeah, I can, I know and Lauren, you know this about me because you know me
- 18:19well, sometimes my personality can feel like a little bit of a pressure cooker.
- 18:23Like, I have to do all these things and I've got these big goals and
- 18:25dreams and I think with friends too, that can show up in my own life.
- 18:29And so what you're describing takes some of the pressure off.
- 18:32Yeah.
- 18:32And just this idea, I love this idea of just like permission.
- 18:36Yeah.
- 18:36Yeah.
- 18:37Permission.
- 18:37Yeah.
- 18:38Yeah.
- 18:39And, and friendships.
- 18:40We're just here to say, friendships can just be tricky.
- 18:43In the therapy world, we talk a lot about how the fact that we are
- 18:48oftentimes hurt in relationships.
- 18:51So that can be from our family of origin, it can be from
- 18:54friendships that have gone awry or.
- 18:57You know, things that have been said.
- 18:59And then we can also heal in relationships.
- 19:02And so my dearest closest friends have been so healing for me and
- 19:10just the way they respond when I mess up has been so healing for me.
- 19:15Literally two days ago, I said something to my best friend and.
- 19:21I, I didn't mean to bring up a painful memory for her, but I did.
- 19:25And inadvertently my daughter was screaming and she is now in this phase
- 19:29where she's like unscrewing her milk cap and there was milk all over her crib.
- 19:32And anyway, I was on the phone with my best friend and I, I said
- 19:36something that brought up a painful memory for her and just her ability
- 19:40to show me grace around that.
- 19:42And we talked through it and we were able to really work through that.
- 19:46Was so healing for me because I haven't always had that experience
- 19:50where I've been extended grace.
- 19:53And I also conversely have probably not done a great job at that
- 19:57either in times in my friendships.
- 19:59And so just us being able to navigate that situation together, like literally
- 20:0548 hours removed was just so powerful.
- 20:09And.
- 20:11Yeah, we can heal in our relationships with other people.
- 20:13We can heal in our friendships.
- 20:15That can be an opportunity for us.
- 20:18So if you guys are struggling in your friendships, we just, we see you.
- 20:22And I think sometimes I know as a client, I've had the privilege of
- 20:27working with different therapists in Nashville and sometimes I can hold my
- 20:31therapist on a pedestal and just be like, oh my gosh, she's so perfect.
- 20:34And we're just here to say that we are not perfect.
- 20:37We have.
- 20:38I'll, I'll take ownership.
- 20:39I have messed up in friendships.
- 20:41I have, I have done things that have hurt other people and I'm actively trying to.
- 20:47Look at those things and be curious about those things and change things so that
- 20:52moving forward, I hurt people less and so that I'm a better friend as well.
- 20:56And so we're not perfect.
- 20:57We don't do friendships perfectly.
- 20:59And we're just here to offer y'all that, that compassion as well.
- 21:03Yeah, so as you continue on this podcast journey with us, you will
- 21:10probably notice a pattern in how we.
- 21:15Kind of move through these episodes.
- 21:16And so around this, this point in the episode, we, we wanna offer an
- 21:23affirmation, a, a kind of nugget of hope for you to take home with you.
- 21:27We're called becoming Anchored.
- 21:29And we have this hope and this desire for, for us and to you all to be on this
- 21:37journey, all of us, to be on this journey together and be becoming anchored in hope.
- 21:41And that's just what it is, a journey, right?
- 21:42It's not this destination we're trying to reach.
- 21:44It's this journey that we're on and we wanna be on it.
- 21:47With you guys.
- 21:48And so I want to leave you all with a quote by our wonderful Laura Dennean.
- 21:54So she, we have a, we have blogs that we write, and they're on our website.
- 21:59Go check them out.
- 22:00They're all kinds of topics on there.
- 22:02Wonderful, wonderful resources.
- 22:04But our wonderful Laura wrote a blog recently on navigating friendships
- 22:09and, I wanted to leave you all with these words that she she offers
- 22:14at the end of this blog post.
- 22:16I trust my intuition in discerning the quality of my friendships,
- 22:21allowing myself to feel peace and joy in the company of true friends.
- 22:26So just take that with you as a hope for today as you continue navigating.
- 22:36What friendships are in your life as an adult.
- 22:45Yeah.
- 22:45And your, your additional homework for today, in addition to the affirmation is
- 22:50just gonna really be to to be curious.
- 22:52So the, the key to curiosity is to approach it open-handedly
- 22:57without judgment or shame, but to be curious about your friendships.
- 23:01So are there people in your life that you wanna reach out to more, or maybe people
- 23:06that you feel you may need to take a step back from but really be intentional
- 23:12about looking at your friendships.
- 23:14Or maybe can you challenge yourself to.
- 23:17Go to some sort of extracurricular activity, whether that's a book
- 23:21club or a hiking club or whatever it might be in your, in your area.
- 23:25We really challenge you to, to figure out what you need as a
- 23:29result of listening to this podcast.
- 23:30So thanks so much for being here for this episode.
- 23:34We wish all of you well, take care.
- 23:37Bye guys.
