- 0:05Hello and welcome back to another episode of The Mindsets
- 0:08Podcast, episode 67. Charles, give me a thought on
- 0:11that. We're getting through them,
- 0:13aren't we? I mean, that's actually
- 0:15factually correct, yes. So big news this week.
- 0:20We are the Champions. We are.
- 0:23And I said it in the last episode, and I think it's
- 0:26finally time to decide that we cut funding from male, all
- 0:30men's, all male sports in in the UK because everything should be
- 0:34going to women England women's rugby.
- 0:36Amazing. Bring it home.
- 0:38Yeah. What a win.
- 0:39I think they're now 33 games on the trot, unbeaten.
- 0:42It's almost like it's it's just expected.
- 0:45If you watch it and you're like, well, this is boring because
- 0:47they're going to win. Do you know what sucks about
- 0:49that? I once played for a team that
- 0:52was 33 NIL and like in an undefeated streak and I hated it
- 0:58because all that you can do is lose.
- 1:00And we lost. We, we, I think we either lost,
- 1:03so we were 33 and one or we went 34 and one.
- 1:07It was around there. It was horrible because the
- 1:09whole thing had just been like winning for years and then it
- 1:12it. Well, I'm glad for them that
- 1:14they went for 33 because if it'd been 32 games streak winning and
- 1:18then they lost the World Cup final.
- 1:20That would have been true, actually.
- 1:21Yeah, fair. Enough.
- 1:22They would like head and shoulders.
- 1:23Yeah, head and shoulders. The best team?
- 1:25I would almost deliberately lose the next one 'cause it doesn't
- 1:28matter. Doesn't matter.
- 1:29But yeah, so well done to England women's rugby and anyone
- 1:33else that partakes in the the women's side of rugby because
- 1:35you are growing the game. The next one was another big
- 1:38win. We managed to stumble our way to
- 1:42a victory in the Ryder Cup. 1513 was the final score.
- 1:45There was a little controversy with this one there.
- 1:48Was and again, we always, we, I don't know why, but we always
- 1:52managed to come back to golf on the podcast at some point.
- 1:55Considering either of us very good at golf, Terrible.
- 1:58Nah, come on, give me, give me some credit.
- 2:00I've shot over a couple of times before.
- 2:02I had, I had a round last year or I went six under through
- 2:06eight holes. Really.
- 2:07Yeah. Fucked it up at the end.
- 2:10Yeah, that was actually some of the best golf that I've watched
- 2:14on TV and I've been watching golf for many, many years.
- 2:17So if you haven't watched any of the highlights, go and watch the
- 2:20highlights on YouTube because watching the the majority of
- 2:23it's bit pretty boring. But the highlights and and some
- 2:26of like, like you say, the controversy behind the fans
- 2:29shouting and chanting at some of the Europe players was was
- 2:33pretty good to watch. In their back swing as well.
- 2:35Oh yeah, like that was. We don't condone oh there's so
- 2:38many good moments, but like Justin Rose was my favorite from
- 2:41the weekend and there were like 2 moments that were like truly
- 2:45goated. I don't know if you have seen
- 2:48like you know when Tiger Woods putts and he knows it's going in
- 2:50and he walks, he follows the ball with his putter.
- 2:53There was one huge putt for Justin Rose and he knocks it and
- 2:57it's like rolling, rolling. It looks so wide and then it
- 3:00breaks last minute but he's already walking.
- 3:02He's so confident and he's like almost beats the ball to the
- 3:05hole and it's like, I don't know a 15 foot putt.
- 3:08Like it was wild. And then he started like he was
- 3:12on the green and I think it was either de Shambo or de Shambo's
- 3:16caddy were just like slowly creeping into his eye line when
- 3:19he's trying to read the part and he has a go and he's he shouts
- 3:23at them. He's like, just get out the way
- 3:24basically. And it's all that you can feel
- 3:27the tension, even just watching it through the TV.
- 3:29And then he just drains this part and just stares straight at
- 3:32both of them. The crowd's going wild and it's
- 3:34so cold, it's so sick. And honestly, there's so many
- 3:37good. I think, I think that's the
- 3:38thing that's so good about the Ryder Cup.
- 3:39Obviously there's not too many. In fact, there's really not many
- 3:43times in Professional Golf where there is like team.
- 3:45Yeah, and or like a crowd that goes wild.
- 3:48Yeah, yeah, yeah. And especially when it was so
- 3:51close, like everyone, the atmosphere is higher.
- 3:53Obviously this time it was in the USA, lot of people as well,
- 3:58the comment warriors across social media saying it takes a
- 4:02whole continent to beat A to beat the US now interesting fact
- 4:06on that. the US has more PGA registered players than the
- 4:10entirety of Europe. So suck on that.
- 4:14Yeah, yeah. But yeah, no wicked.
- 4:16And like Charles said, go back and watch some of the highlights
- 4:19coming up on my feet daily and it was brilliant.
- 4:21There's so many good moments, I am for sure.
- 4:23Well, today we're going to be talking about a couple of
- 4:26things, but this is kind of all still in the lead up to the
- 4:30event we're hosting this weekend if you're listening prior to the
- 4:3412th of October. That made me nervous, yeah.
- 4:38Yeah, no, it's. Not this week, is it?
- 4:40For those that are listening to this, This was recorded the week
- 4:42before, but we have got the rocks SIM.
- 4:46So it's a full high rock SIM, full runs, real sleds and
- 4:51everything in between. So if you are tempted by that
- 4:56and you're thinking that you're going to get FOMO, you will get
- 5:00FOMO. The link will be in the
- 5:01description of tickets. So definitely go and check it
- 5:04out. But because we want to make sure
- 5:06that you guys use the SIM properly and learn from it, What
- 5:10we've decided to do is do a few things in terms of discussion
- 5:14points about pre race fuelling, how to get ready for your race
- 5:18in terms of warm up and then also a little bit of a
- 5:20discussion topic about when you're actually racing.
- 5:22So the first thing is pre race fuelling.
- 5:27Now you shouldn't ever do anything on race day that you
- 5:30haven't done before. This is a prime example of a not
- 5:34real race day where you can practice.
- 5:36So like if you haven't done fuelling before and you want to
- 5:38give it a go, this is a great way to figure out if something
- 5:40does or does not work for your body.
- 5:43Have you got any random tips? Because I've got some science to
- 5:46follow up for some people, but I want to know from your
- 5:48perspective. I wasn't going to go random.
- 5:51And again, I don't want to give unsolicited nutrition of going
- 5:54to OK, cool. But the big one for me is kind
- 5:58of the timing around your fueling strategy and figuring
- 6:02out when in the day your race is going to be.
- 6:06So for example, it's going to be similar for our SIM to what
- 6:10you're going to experience on race day because we're going to
- 6:12give you a certain heat time and then you just have to work
- 6:15backwards from your heat time to make sure you've got enough time
- 6:18to fuel and eat the stuff that you need to eat before you race.
- 6:22And the beauty of this, I assume you'll be staying at home, so
- 6:25everything will be like normal. If you're travelling for a high
- 6:28Rocks race, that might not necessarily be the case,
- 6:30especially if you're in a foreign country where you don't
- 6:33have access to the foods that you normally eat before racing
- 6:35or training. So yeah, using your heat times
- 6:38kind of work backwards and make sure you have enough fuel pre
- 6:42race essentially. Yeah, We've already spoken a bit
- 6:45about tapering in one of our first episodes where we became
- 6:48this double S format, which I think was like episode 50 or 51
- 6:52something. Something around then we spoke
- 6:54about tapering and how you should be doing that.
- 6:56Again, for a SIM. You don't necessarily need to do
- 6:58that unless you really wanted to make it a complete simulation of
- 7:01how a whole week might feel. But you want to be continuing to
- 7:05do your workouts in the lead up. As you said though with the
- 7:08timing of it, you do want to prime your body.
- 7:10We're not going to have anybody starting at brain time 7:00 AM
- 7:14when you go to Smeaser board races, you might be in the first
- 7:16wave at 8:00 AM. And if you're.
- 7:18Having to get up. So you want to, you want to get
- 7:21your body ready to be able to get up and get food in and then
- 7:24go and do a warm up at a time in the morning that is reasonable
- 7:27to your body. If you're used to training at
- 7:2811:00 PM and then you're high ox races, supposedly 7:00 AM brain
- 7:32time, then it's not going to be as easy to do.
- 7:35So other things that get talked about a lot are things like carb
- 7:41loading. Yeah, now there's a bit of
- 7:43controversy between all levels, including the elites, about
- 7:47whether or not high rocks is something you should carb load
- 7:49for anyway. I don't know if you've got any
- 7:51opinions on that. I don't.
- 7:52Think you need to carb load. I would completely.
- 7:55Agree, I mean you need to be eating carbs to fuel your
- 7:58performance, but when the event is not going to be longer than
- 8:0290 minutes for a lot of people, especially at the the the top
- 8:06where you know carb loading is probably even more beneficial
- 8:11for like performance at the very very top.
- 8:14The top athletes are going through in like sub an hour.
- 8:16You don't need to carb load for probably anything that's shorter
- 8:19than 90 minutes. So yeah, I wouldn't, I wouldn't
- 8:22waste your time or effort necessarily on just trying to
- 8:25cram a load of carbs in and you end up doing it probably
- 8:28incorrectly getting to the race and just feeling full and
- 8:31bloated and fluffy and not really raring to go.
- 8:34So yeah, I don't think it's probably necessary.
- 8:36I think you're going to come to me with the science scene.
- 8:38Well, I was, I was, no, I was basically going to mention if
- 8:41you were doing carb loading and, and let's talk more generally
- 8:44then. So let's say you're doing
- 8:46something like a marathon or a slightly longer race, as you
- 8:48said is beyond that sort of 90 minute mark, you would typically
- 8:53want to start from two to three days out.
- 8:55Some start a little bit earlier to make it easier to get used to
- 8:58taking on that much. But you want to be having
- 9:00between 7 to 10 grams per kilogram per day.
- 9:04So I'll let you guys at home do the math.
- 9:05I'm not going to take all of your body weight, so I'm not
- 9:07going to ask that question before you work it out, but
- 9:10that's kind of the scale you want to be at.
- 9:12And the other thing that is important when it comes to
- 9:14saying you probably don't need to do it for Hyrox is that much
- 9:20carb is quite high in volume. And so if you are eating that
- 9:25and then you're trying to go into a high intensity workout,
- 9:27which includes a lot of functional movement, a lot of
- 9:30sort of, I mean you're throwing your body on the floor, you're
- 9:32jumping. In, but it's a lot of inertia.
- 9:35That whole thing can really upset your, your stomach, your
- 9:38general gastrointestinal system. So yeah, that's a that's a big
- 9:43thing is you don't necessarily use carb load for high risk
- 9:45training. But if you are going to do it 7
- 9:46to 10 grams, two to three days out per kilogram, sorry.
- 9:48Yeah, I think for for most people when you're carb loading,
- 9:52that's going to be specific probably to marathon running or
- 9:55like you say like a like a a longer endurance workout, maybe
- 9:58an Iron Man or a half Iron Man where the duration is closer to
- 10:02like 3 to 5 for an Iron Man then it's like 7 to 10 hours, maybe a
- 10:06little bit longer. So that's super important.
- 10:08I would probably suggest starting your carb load earlier
- 10:11than two to three days. You're looking probably the
- 10:14whole week leading up to it just so like you say, you can start
- 10:18to get used to the volume of food and your body can start to
- 10:21process that and and store the glycogen so you are ready to
- 10:25race when it comes around to it. Yeah, and and carb loading is
- 10:28definitely not a myth. It can improve, it can improve
- 10:33your time to exhaustion by 20 to 30% on average, which is massive
- 10:39when you think about it. So that's, that's one of the
- 10:41main ones that I think people do actually get wrong for this sort
- 10:43of thing is put too much emphasis on carb loading.
- 10:46Another thing which I find quite interesting is sodium.
- 10:51A lot of people we've spoken about electrolytes before think,
- 10:54well, I need to get my hydration up.
- 10:56I need to get as much sodium in as possible.
- 10:58So they start having loads of electrolytes in the days leading
- 11:00up. Now that is generally great, I
- 11:02would say for most people and we are probably not drinking enough
- 11:06water, but that's kind of where that stops, like we're probably
- 11:10not drinking enough water. Sodium you get still quite a lot
- 11:13from your diet, but a lot of people, especially in the day
- 11:17leading up to a higher ox might have 3-4 electrolyte sachets and
- 11:22they might not be paying too much attention of how much
- 11:24sodium is in each one. And sodium is the main thing,
- 11:26the main electrolyte you lose when you sweat.
- 11:28So for some people, depending on the intensity and depending on
- 11:32who you are, you lose between 400 milligrams to 2000
- 11:36milligrams per hour in sweat. 2000 is excessive.
- 11:38Yeah. But there will be people that
- 11:42are taking in, like I said, 4, maybe even five times that the
- 11:47day before in order to hydrate. And one of the key things, and
- 11:50I've definitely got this wrong before as well, is if you maybe
- 11:54you're doing a bit of carb loading, you feel a bit bloated
- 11:56the day before your race or you still feel thirsty even though
- 11:59you've been hydrating, you're just having too much sodium.
- 12:02That's one of the key signs. So some science again, if you
- 12:06want to know how much you should be having, 3 to 4G, so 3000 to
- 12:104000 milligrams of salt in the 24 hours prior to your event is
- 12:15really the upper safe limit for an athlete.
- 12:18So you don't want to be crossing that.
- 12:19And that does mean you need to take into account what you're
- 12:22eating as well as what you're drinking.
- 12:24Well, you said it there. I think like you get a lot of
- 12:25the sodium from your diet and and probably more than you
- 12:28actually consider you actually intake through your diet.
- 12:32But another thing that I think is important because you do want
- 12:35to be on top of it, you do want to be like fully hydrated.
- 12:40If you're running a high rocks race, you're in a venue that's
- 12:43typically really hot. So you are going to be on the
- 12:47upper end of the scale of losing sweat.
- 12:49But again, like you're probably only working out for 90 minutes,
- 12:53an hour to 90 minutes. So is it the end of the world?
- 12:56No. But is it a good way to enhance
- 12:57your performance 100%? So it's one of those things to
- 13:00definitely consider. That's the thing, if you get it
- 13:01right, it's such, it's such a difference, such a difference.
- 13:05And you, you'll also notice it because you can have a really
- 13:07good performance and then you, you won't get a headache after.
- 13:10That's one of the biggest things I've always noticed.
- 13:11If I've not kicked sodium, yeah, then I'm feeling like I've got a
- 13:16crazy headache. Later on in the day.
- 13:17I feel that everything aches a bit more.
- 13:19But again, with the, if you're having slightly too much, well,
- 13:23the way your cells work is they're going to go and get that
- 13:25fluid from somewhere and if they can take it from a muscle that
- 13:28might not be using it, they're going to take it from that.
- 13:30They're going to take it from an organ.
- 13:31Again, I said that I was getting headaches.
- 13:33My brain was literally shriveled, shriveled up by the
- 13:36end of it because it was taking everything from where it could
- 13:37get. Then that's going to cause me
- 13:39issues in the race because I also then don't have the fluid
- 13:41to sweat out. In the same way, do you have a
- 13:44like a process or a structure leading up to a race and like
- 13:47when you feel, when you eat, when you drink, do you have
- 13:49timings or a little bit more flexible fluid?
- 13:52So yeah, if you'd asked me a year ago, no, not really.
- 13:56I think the main thing for me now is that in the days leading
- 13:59up to a competition I will definitely always have a bottle
- 14:01of water on me so I can constantly be sipping out is.
- 14:04It you who's just smashing muffins.
- 14:07I've done that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:08Like I. Also see a full sorrine so so.
- 14:11If I I get nervous and I find fueling quite hard around
- 14:16exercise so I try and make it as enjoyable as possible.
- 14:19Sure, and but. That's a really good tip
- 14:21actually. A whole loaf of sorrine is quite
- 14:25easy to eat actually, you don't need, you don't need the butter
- 14:27on anything. You can buy the block.
- 14:29And as soon as you buy into what looks like a really dry blocks.
- 14:31Lovely. Yeah, that's got 160 grams of
- 14:34carbs in it. For a whole block.
- 14:35For a whole block, and if we were talking about carb loading,
- 14:38I would only need to eat. For my body weight, I'd only
- 14:41need to eat 5 blocks a day. Only need to eat, which is easy.
- 14:44Yeah. So if I have one block of
- 14:45sorrine. And then what did I have in
- 14:47Cardiff, which was my bad fuelling time?
- 14:50I think I had three muffins. So I.
- 14:52Well, yeah, that I see. That's where I know it.
- 14:54From scientifically the right amount of carbs, but just wrong.
- 14:57Yeah, totally wrong timing wrong.
- 15:00So yeah, I mean, that's why I, I do that because I, I know that
- 15:03I'll always want to eat that. The other thing that we can come
- 15:08back to is what you do just before your race.
- 15:13So for those of you that have been at High Rocks events,
- 15:15marathons, pretty much any sporting event actually ever, if
- 15:19you go to the toilet before a competition starts, you know
- 15:23what you're in for. It's like Chernobyl basically,
- 15:27like it's mad it you can smell it from 100 meters away.
- 15:32The main cause of that I would say is caffeine maybe.
- 15:36So in terms of caffeine and taking caffeine in, this is
- 15:39another thing that I have probably underdone because I
- 15:42didn't really factor in my body weight, but you also need to
- 15:45factor in your caffeine sensitivity.
- 15:48So caffeine for you, something you've steer away from.
- 15:54Yes, in terms of like taking it as an actual like performance
- 15:57enhancer, even though I understand how beneficial it is,
- 16:00but that's just like a personal choice for me.
- 16:03I will have all depending on when I'm racing.
- 16:05I will have my normal dose of normal dose of caffeine.
- 16:09I will have coffee in the day that I'm racing, but I'm not
- 16:13using it as a performance enhancer, which can be very
- 16:17beneficial. There's lots of people that I
- 16:19know will eradicate it from their diet the week or weeks
- 16:24leading up to it, so their sensitivity to it is slightly
- 16:27higher. So it has more of an impact on
- 16:29the date. Because when you think about it,
- 16:31if you're drinking lots of coffee every single day, whether
- 16:34that's for performance or not, or just like general lifestyle,
- 16:37your body reacts to it slightly less.
- 16:41Than it would if you didn't have it in your diet.
- 16:42So lots of people will remove it and then add it back in for race
- 16:46day. And as a result, they're a bit
- 16:47more sensitive and they get a bit more from it.
- 16:50Well, around a similar time to us talking about tapering I we
- 16:54had a guest episode. We've got Phil from Human 24 who
- 16:58is an expert in all theaters. It's a really good episode to
- 17:01listen to and understand this a bit more.
- 17:03But one of the main things that I remember him saying about
- 17:06caffeine is it is a performance enhancing drug that is legal.
- 17:10It can do a number of things. It increases the level at which
- 17:13your heart rate can go to and rise to, which is good in terms
- 17:16of a normal aerobic sense. So sort of pushing that
- 17:18boundary. One of the downsides is you can
- 17:21increase your anxious response. Yeah, I was going to say, So
- 17:23that's something if you are a person that gets anxious.
- 17:25Yeah, yeah, yeah. And that can kind of put you
- 17:28into the the wrong side of yeah, nerves or as our friend from
- 17:32That's Monday podcast podcast would say, arousal stimulation.
- 17:36Stimulation, but then the other thing is also to consider the
- 17:40half life of caffeine, which is 1 when you're having it in your
- 17:43training, you do need to consider that the half life is,
- 17:46I believe it's actually like 10 hours, which is why a lot of
- 17:49people say I won't have caffeine posted after like 2:00 PM, which
- 17:53is genuinely it makes a massive difference in your sleep and it
- 17:56won't necessarily affect how quickly you get to sleep.
- 17:58It's just the sleep quality. When it comes to your
- 18:00competition, though, you also need to think about that in
- 18:02terms of a lot of people will have their energy drink or
- 18:06whatever they're having for caffeine while they're in the
- 18:08warm up area. And the prime time to really
- 18:11have it. So it kind of kicks in is an
- 18:14hour before, Sure. And a lot of people say, oh, no,
- 18:15no, it kicks in for me like 30 minutes before.
- 18:18It's like it might do, but it's not going anywhere.
- 18:21Where it's also like that's your what you're experiencing there
- 18:24is like the sensation rather than like the actual
- 18:27physiological response that your body's having, which needs
- 18:30probably longer. So you're getting the
- 18:33stimulation, you're like, OK, I'm buzzing now.
- 18:34I feel good to go. But actually you need a little
- 18:36bit longer for the full effect to happen in the muscles rather
- 18:40than the, the like the chemical makeup in your brain basically.
- 18:43Exactly. And like like if if you consider
- 18:46this into a whole pre warm up routine, which we'll we'll get
- 18:49to in a moment, it's best to have the energy drink away,
- 18:52especially if it's carbonated. Get it, get it down.
- 18:54You gotta go and let it do it's thing.
- 18:56Maybe you feel half an hour before, Oh, I can feel it
- 18:58working out great. It's not going to go anywhere
- 19:00for the next 9 1/2 hours. So like chill out.
- 19:03It's going to do it's long, it's going to do it's job.
- 19:05So that's that's one thing. And then kind of touching back
- 19:09into the carb side here, because a lot of people will use
- 19:12caffeinated gels, it is a good idea to to have some sort of
- 19:16carb before you start. So typically you would still
- 19:20want to have a relatively carb dense foot like meal before your
- 19:23your race. So talking 200 grams is a pretty
- 19:26broad general thing. But if you aim to sort of 200
- 19:29grams in a meal 3 to 4 hours before your race, but you still
- 19:32want to top it up maybe with a gel, that's 25 to 30 grams of
- 19:35carbs before your race, just so you've got that immediate store.
- 19:38Yeah. So with my clients, what I
- 19:41typically suggest like the timeline is we're having our
- 19:43last meal at least two hours before you race, which if you've
- 19:47got, and you said it there, if you've got like the 8:00 AM
- 19:50start time or the 7:00 AM start time, you're eating really,
- 19:54really early, which is really tough.
- 19:55So that wants to be, let's just say we are working out in the in
- 19:58the morning. You want that morning meal to be
- 20:00as close to your regular breakfast as as you'd have on a
- 20:03day-to-day. Maybe with slightly higher carb
- 20:06intake just so you have a little bit more glycogen reserved for
- 20:09the actual race, but you have that minimum 2 hours before
- 20:13we're then probably going to eat at least two more times between
- 20:16that and actually starting the race.
- 20:18So your next meal was probably, let's say, 45 minutes before you
- 20:21start the race. So you've had a little bit of a
- 20:23chance to digest your main meal, but now you're having something
- 20:26super carby. So I like to use like squares
- 20:30bars or something similar, which is very high in sugar and it's
- 20:32very high GI. So it's very quick to get into
- 20:36the bloodstream. And then 10 minutes before
- 20:38erasing. So literally just as we're going
- 20:40into the tunnel, that's when you're having your last bit of
- 20:43sugar intake or carb. So that's when for me
- 20:46personally, I'd have a gel. But other people have sweets or
- 20:49jellies or something that's just very quick to digest, very easy
- 20:52to get down, and then you're ready to go.
- 20:54So some anecdotal advice on that as well.
- 20:57I do typically go for a gel, but I absolutely make sure it's not
- 21:01the last thing I have before I go into the tunnel because I
- 21:03also sometimes with nerves, I find that I don't get clammy
- 21:07palms. I don't get anything like that.
- 21:08I get dry now. And so I definitely don't want
- 21:11to have something like a gel that can make my mouth feel even
- 21:14stickier unless I'm I've got the ability to immediately wash it
- 21:17down with something. And that's also the other reason
- 21:19I wouldn't go for something like a, a squares bar necessarily
- 21:21right before because it again could dry my mouth.
- 21:23That's why I have to be quite conscious of that.
- 21:25I think like and that's, that's a that's a good tip.
- 21:27If if we continue talking about high rocks, like in the warm up
- 21:30area, there are, there is water available to you.
- 21:35So like you don't have to worry about taking a bottle in and
- 21:37leaving it like you can. You can get water in the warm up
- 21:39zone. So I'll have my gel and make
- 21:41sure that's washed down with water.
- 21:44But if you're worried about not having access to water in in the
- 21:47warm up area, just take like a plastic bottle or something that
- 21:50you can just Chuck away. Not that I advocate single use
- 21:53plastic, but take in or like a Leucasate sport or something
- 21:56like that that you can just sip on across the warm up and then
- 21:59you can Chuck it away, don't have to worry about it, and then
- 22:01you're good to go. I know there are actually some
- 22:03events, and this is including high rocks, but not all the
- 22:06time, that don't let you take a bottle into the warm up area.
- 22:09So in that situation, you've got to deal with those little
- 22:11shortcuts. I would say #1 you can get
- 22:14carried away or even worried about having too many of them
- 22:17because they don't feel like you're drinking anything.
- 22:18Make sure when you're having those, you're swelling them
- 22:20around your mouth because sometimes you get dry mouth and
- 22:22you have a drink and it doesn't help your mouth because it's
- 22:24gone straight down your throat. Sure, make sure you're kind of
- 22:26getting that swelled, clearing out any of the sort of saliva
- 22:30that you've just built up from doing a good warm up and get rid
- 22:33of that. And then you can go in and, and
- 22:35not feel like you've suddenly taken on a kilogram of water,
- 22:38which you don't want to take around.
- 22:40There's a few more things that I wanted to touch on really
- 22:42quickly, which I don't think you really need to be considering
- 22:46for a SIM, but you could try again.
- 22:48So one of the most sort of trendy things which we've done a
- 22:53lot of times is beetroot juice and nitrates.
- 22:56So, so nitrates is another thing that I discussed on that episode
- 22:58with film. It's another performance
- 23:01enhancer. They do.
- 23:03They are proven scientifically to make a difference, and they
- 23:06do work. But again, there's kind of an
- 23:09asterisk with it because it really makes a difference to
- 23:12your performance. But it's probably only worth
- 23:15putting yourself through. I mean, it's not, It's not that
- 23:17bad. It's probably only worth putting
- 23:18yourself through if you know that everything else is dialed
- 23:22in. Dialed in, yeah.
- 23:23Well, that's the same with everything and any any
- 23:25supplementation you're going to do on top of your diet.
- 23:28If you're sat at home eating oven pizzas and meal deals all
- 23:31day long, there's probably room or scope for improvement on your
- 23:34actual diet to get more out of in terms of like a quality
- 23:38nutrient dense diet that's going to help improve your performance
- 23:41rather than just turning and going, I'm going to supplement
- 23:44now because that's what everyone else is doing.
- 23:46Sort your diet out, make sure that's and the nuts and bolts of
- 23:49your diet are really good. Make sure your sleep and
- 23:51recovery is really good and then you can start.
- 23:53Layering, layering, layering and then it's like that the small
- 23:56things before you start thinking about bicarb and nitrate loading
- 23:59etcetera, etcetera. So one of the things I was going
- 24:01to say, if you are going to try the the whole nitrates thing, I
- 24:04think we've probably discussed it before, but you have the
- 24:06option of buying the shots which come in.
- 24:09So you get 400 milligrams which is in in one of those shots,
- 24:12which is typically fine for most people.
- 24:15Again, depending on your body weight, I would.
- 24:17Look, I am their top customer. So you can have that and that
- 24:21obviously is a very easy way of getting it in and down.
- 24:23It does. It does not taste very nice at
- 24:25all. If you want to go to an
- 24:26alternative method which is slightly cheaper, you can go and
- 24:29get beetroot juice and have it straight from the source.
- 24:31You can get the coarse to impress one which has got a
- 24:33little bit of apple juice in it, which helps, but you need to be
- 24:35having about half a litre of that which is a pint.
- 24:38I actually don't mind the course to impress one.
- 24:40I've kind of got used to it, but you have to be aware there is a
- 24:43much greater volume that you need to intake and you need to
- 24:47be aware of the side effects. If you're going to start doing
- 24:50this, you probably want to do 7 to 5 days out of your your
- 24:53competition. In that time, things that come
- 24:56out the other end are going to be bright red.
- 24:59That is normal unless there's something else going on with
- 25:02you, but generally speaking it's normal.
- 25:04So don't get freaked out when you see that too freaked out.
- 25:08Then other things that I've I've written down that people take
- 25:13sometimes through their training but before a race.
- 25:15Creatine. You don't need to change it.
- 25:16No. If you're already taking it,
- 25:18keep taking it. On that note, I'll just say
- 25:21that's the out of anything that we've discussed there, that's
- 25:25the one thing that I would recommend taking in your
- 25:27training. Everyone's routine, just
- 25:29everyone. And there's, there's so much now
- 25:31coming out about brain function and brain performance and the
- 25:34actual dosage that you need to be taking is probably five times
- 25:37the amount recommended. But again, that's unsolicited.
- 25:40I'll let you do your own research on that.
- 25:42But it's such a fantastic supplement that everyone or
- 25:45anyone, whether you train or not, should be, should be
- 25:48taking. And a quick one on that, if you
- 25:49aren't already aware, your body already naturally produces it,
- 25:53so you're not giving it anything that it doesn't already know
- 25:55about. It's not like something that has
- 25:57just been cooked up in a lab that we're saying to take.
- 25:59Your body already gets it from food, mainly from, I mean beef
- 26:03products have a large amount of it in, but we don't get enough
- 26:06of it in our in our diet, especially in ultra processed
- 26:08food. So creatine is a great thing to
- 26:10be taking The next thing you touched on it already, Bicarb.
- 26:15Yeah, Bicarb's super powerful, super, super powerful in both
- 26:18sensors of the world. You've got to be sensible and
- 26:20like actually really be on it with your dosage.
- 26:23There is an art form to it. It tastes disgusting.
- 26:26I've tried to put a tiny tiny amount in porridge to see how
- 26:29much it tastes and it it doesn't.
- 26:30I don't think it tastes like soap, it just tastes like acid.
- 26:33You'll know if you've ever made pancakes with bicarb and you
- 26:36haven't mixed it properly. You can taste it.
- 26:39Yeah. You, you kind of need to mix it.
- 26:41Morton is one of the companies. There's another company called
- 26:44Fly Carb or their bicarb packets, which basically do the
- 26:47same thing. And it's immersed in an
- 26:49electrolyte gel, which helps you break it down as it goes in.
- 26:52But even then, like, there's still a very.
- 26:56I do like the idea of someone else doing the dosage for you
- 27:00rather than you experimenting at home.
- 27:02Yeah. And when we say like, it's very
- 27:04powerful. It can be explosive at one end
- 27:06and also cause crazy stomach cramps.
- 27:09Sure. And if you really do it wrong,
- 27:10hospitalize yourself. It's very, it's very popular in
- 27:13in long endurance sports like cycling.
- 27:16But when you, when you think about the professionals who are
- 27:19cycling, they have a team nutritionist and I've seen
- 27:22Doctor Who are helping figure out dosage, etcetera, etcetera.
- 27:25But talk about like the benefits of bicarb.
- 27:28Yeah, well, I mean the, the benefit is mainly being that it
- 27:33increases the efficiency of your aerobic system in terms of
- 27:37flushing out well waste product. Yeah.
- 27:39Waste products are dealing with lactate along that which then
- 27:42just allows you to perform a little bit longer, increase the
- 27:45efficiency of the oxygen in your muscles.
- 27:46Very similar to what the nitrate loading is doing as well.
- 27:49Exactly two more things that are actually pretty common that
- 27:53hierarchy athletes take is beta alanine, that's the thing that
- 27:57makes you itch and pre workouts and citrulline malate, both
- 28:02similar effects to bicarb, less so but just aid in your body's
- 28:08efficiency and moving the blood around and the more shaped blood
- 28:10and dealing with lactate at different levels so you can play
- 28:14with those. Yeah, they are readily
- 28:15available, all of them, various different price points,
- 28:18especially things like the bicarb because they're doing all
- 28:20the dosing for you. It's a lot more expensive.
- 28:23But if those are things that you think, you know what my training
- 28:26is dialled, I've really worked on my sleep, I want to give some
- 28:28of these things a go. Absolutely give them a go.
- 28:31Look up the time that you think is good for you to load based on
- 28:34how your body processes things and how much you need based on
- 28:38your body weight. And then absolutely give them a
- 28:41go and see how they perform in a SIM before you turn up and size
- 28:44it the week before your ice. I'd also just caveat all of
- 28:47that. It's like if you're struggling
- 28:48to find good information or credible and information on how
- 28:52to take it, when to take it, what dosage, then just speak to
- 28:56a nutritionist. Yeah, I'll be more than happy to
- 28:59help and get some. Seek some actual professional
- 29:01advice rather than two idiots on a podcast.
- 29:03Yeah, fair enough. Well, the two idiots.
- 29:05On the podcast are going to move on to the next Wait, hang on.
- 29:07I was I I just remembered the game because I thought about
- 29:09when you're talking about electrolytes.
- 29:11And this is completely off topic, but I think it's really,
- 29:13really funny. And I'm going to name no names,
- 29:15but one of one of my friends who I bumped into the other day, he
- 29:18was talking about the price and the cost of all of these
- 29:21supplements and electrolytes. So what he did, he took a very
- 29:25popular brand of electrolytes and just read the ingredients
- 29:28list off the back and then went online and bought all the raw
- 29:32ingredients for what you need to to make electrolytes.
- 29:36So what then happened was however many bags of KG of white
- 29:41powder just arrived on his doorstep.
- 29:44He doesn't live in the UK, he was just in the UK at the time
- 29:46when he ordered it. And then he was then travelling
- 29:49to where he does live. So he's walking through the
- 29:52airport with a big bag just full of white powder.
- 29:56And yeah, I asked him how it went and he said yeah.
- 29:59No one stopped me, no one searched me.
- 30:00We're all good. It's great.
- 30:01Yeah. When I went to When Was it
- 30:03Barcelona? This year, I had individual IKEA
- 30:07Ziploc bags of Citrine Malay beta alanine.
- 30:10I even took some sodium bicarb just to mess around with.
- 30:13Not a good idea. Not even checked.
- 30:16Nothing. Also, when we went to Nice for
- 30:18World Champs, and again, I won't name names, but someone who was
- 30:21racing had forgotten about his his Morton gels that he had in
- 30:24his hand luggage. And obviously I got flags when
- 30:27it went through the X-ray and pulled to one side and we're all
- 30:29waiting there like, oh, there's always one guy who forgets to
- 30:32check his hand luggage and the security guy is going through it
- 30:35and he'd stuffed all his Morton gels in a water bottle and the
- 30:38guy's pulling them out. And obviously the Morton gels
- 30:40are expensive. And this guy, he was like, he
- 30:43looked like Puss in Boots, just like big wide eyes, like, please
- 30:47don't throw my gels away, please.
- 30:49Can I take them, please? He's like, explain I've got high
- 30:51rocks world champs. I need these gels.
- 30:53They're so expensive. And the guy was just like, yeah,
- 30:55all right, take him. Yeah, that.
- 30:57That because now, because now in a lot of places they don't even
- 31:01make you put everything in like a vault, no.
- 31:03They they've increased the amount you can take through.
- 31:05Is there anyway? Yeah, yeah, we don't need to
- 31:08talk about. That although one last point,
- 31:11don't for the reason that you know they don't and they're not
- 31:13going to pull out this plastic bag or you need to separate
- 31:15them. Don't put them at the bottom of
- 31:17your bag. Oh yeah.
- 31:17Because when you do get stopped, yeah.
- 31:19That's that's actually unpackable.
- 31:20That's another huge pro tip that I tell all of my clients who are
- 31:24travelling for high rocks. If you're taking hold luggage
- 31:27and hand luggage, pack your freaking carbons and your race
- 31:30day kit in your hand luggage. Because if they lose your whole,
- 31:34so true, and you get to the race, like start of the race and
- 31:37you haven't got carbons, you haven't got any of your race
- 31:38kit, Just put all of the stuff that you actually need to race
- 31:40in in your hand. Luggage.
- 31:42Another thing, if you're travelling with two hand
- 31:44luggages, split all of your fluids across the two of them.
- 31:47So many times I've packed it all into one and they're like, you
- 31:49can't do that. And I'm like, I've got another
- 31:50bag. Watch this.
- 31:51Yeah, we're moving on to kind of what you do on race day.
- 31:58So warm ups have always been a thing that I think people
- 32:01misunderstand. You have, I've got 2 quotes, got
- 32:05one from you, which is think about it like warming an engine
- 32:08up on a cold day. I really like that.
- 32:11The next one is actually a quote from a study.
- 32:14OK. So I'm going to do not from me
- 32:16not not from you actually, unless your surname was formerly
- 32:19Burnley. But Burnley ET al from the 2005
- 32:23Journal of Applied Physiology found that performing a heavy
- 32:26warm up bout before exercise speeds up VO2 kinetics, which is
- 32:30oxygen uptake response. It reduces reliance on anaerobic
- 32:34metabolism and improves tolerance to severe intensity
- 32:37exercise. In some cases, time to
- 32:39exhaustion was extended by 15 to 20%, which again as a percentage
- 32:45of your performance and ability is massive.
- 32:48But I said severe intensity there.
- 32:51And that's really true. Yeah, for sure.
- 32:53So. Warm ups people, typically
- 32:56events that I have noticed, especially if I've been filming
- 32:58them, I'll say, look, I don't want to get in the way of your
- 33:00warm up. So I'll meet you 40 minutes
- 33:03before outside the warm up area because I think 40 minutes is
- 33:05typically what I would spend. That allows me to go through
- 33:07some mobility, slowly build up and we'll talk about the actual
- 33:11process and women. But yeah, a lot of people will
- 33:14turn up, bag drop 10 minutes before, walk straight through
- 33:17the tunnel. They don't want to waste their
- 33:18energy before the race. I think there's, I like this
- 33:20because there's lots to to unpick here, but basically your
- 33:24quote from Bernie ET al in 2005 that applied Physiology journals
- 33:28like super good for any sort of just information around training
- 33:32and and etcetera, etcetera. But what that saying is exactly
- 33:36the same as my quote of it's like warming an engine up on a
- 33:39cold day. Not just that simplified because
- 33:43I say that to all of the members who come to my classes or who I
- 33:45coach and who I train with. If you're not doing a really
- 33:49effective warm up, you're losing out on so that that's a
- 33:51performance enhancer in itself. And it's like you jump in the
- 33:55car and it's such an easy analogy and it's frosty outside
- 33:57and it's cold. You get in the car, it's all
- 33:59cold. If you turn it on, if you start
- 34:02revving the shit out of the engine, something's going to go,
- 34:05maybe not then, but later down the line.
- 34:07So you wait for oil temperature to rise, You just wait for the
- 34:10engine temperature to rise and then it's good to go.
- 34:13And it's exactly the same thing when you do a race, whether
- 34:15that's high rocks, whether you're going for a run or you're
- 34:19racing an actual running race. When I'm at doesn't matter.
- 34:22What I think a lot of the time with high rocks is the warm up
- 34:27area is like filled with testosterone and it's just like
- 34:30ego measuring contest. And it's like people strutting
- 34:34around with their chests out and like who's going to be the
- 34:36fight? And it doesn't matter because
- 34:37you're not racing them. You're racing the clock at the
- 34:38end of the day. But as a result, the warm up
- 34:41area is a hostile place to be and that's where you get the
- 34:44most nerves. So it's like, I can understand
- 34:47why you don't want to spend a long time in the warm up area,
- 34:49but if you're not in the warm up area for long enough, then
- 34:52you're just killing yourself from kind of step one of the
- 34:56race. So one of the things that I
- 34:58think is important is a lot of people, as we've said, are
- 35:02scared to waste their energy for the race.
- 35:04And I would say the people that I've just said drop their bags
- 35:0810 minutes before, go straight into the tunnel versus the
- 35:11people that have warmed up appropriately do the exact same
- 35:13thing for the 10 minutes prior to their race.
- 35:15And that's not a lot like 10 minutes before you really ease
- 35:19off the intensity. But the total difference that's
- 35:22happened, like I said, is you would typically start off your
- 35:26warm up. Well, this is what I would do.
- 35:27And actually this would be interesting if you told me what
- 35:28I'm doing wrong. But a lot of this was actually
- 35:30learned from you. So we'll see if I've adapted too
- 35:33far and got down my own thing. But part of it is being able to
- 35:36replicate something that feels good and you might have done in
- 35:38previous workouts so that mentally, you know, you're ready
- 35:40to go. For me, what that looks like is
- 35:43I'm going to go in, I'm going to sit on a bike for 3K, which is
- 35:48about a source, I don't know, 6 1/2 minutes at the sort of pace.
- 35:52I'm just getting some blood through my lower body and then
- 35:54going to come off the bike and I'm going to start doing some
- 35:57dynamic stretches. So I'm not necessarily going to
- 35:59be static. I'm going to still be moving.
- 36:01If there's anything that I've had niggles wise or kind of
- 36:03concerns about things that do get tight, I might do some
- 36:05static stretching, but I don't try and stay in those positions
- 36:07too long. Once I've done that, I might
- 36:10start doing some reduced weight movements and so I'm kind of
- 36:15getting the blood flow. I might do a few burpees, I
- 36:17might do a few body weight lunges, that sort of thing just
- 36:20to make sure that I'm feeling smooth.
- 36:22I typically don't touch the sleds.
- 36:24Interesting. I'm not that bothered about
- 36:26them. At that point I'll probably go
- 36:28over to a ski ogre or rowing machine and I'll do a bit of a
- 36:32build up and I'll start with perceived slow effort for a
- 36:37minute, a slightly increased effort for 45 seconds, and then
- 36:41a harder effort for 30 seconds. Back off and I'll go through
- 36:44that two, maybe 3 times and then what I'll do, provided that
- 36:48there's one available, I actually sit back on a bike and
- 36:50I will get my legs turning over what I want my running speed to
- 36:53be for the next sort of 5 minutes.
- 36:55I'll have my gel and then I'll chill out and just do anything
- 36:58else I need for my nerves. OK, interesting.
- 37:00Do you ever go on the treadmill? Again, it's very dependent on if
- 37:04the bike is available. I prefer to be on the bike
- 37:07because I feel like I can control what I'm doing a lot
- 37:09more. The running side of things on
- 37:11the treadmill and this is again quite specific to high rocks.
- 37:15I can't remember if if the treadmills are centre.
- 37:18Or. Treadmills suck.
- 37:20They never work. It's like as soon as I touch
- 37:22them, I don't want to say I'm like really heavy, but I feel
- 37:25like I'm stuck with my foot for a split second or it slides.
- 37:28And so I'd rather not be thinking about my running like
- 37:30that. I'd rather just sit on a bike we
- 37:31know and love. That's fair.
- 37:33Because just before I, I, I get into that warm up a little bit
- 37:36more. But look at professional
- 37:38athletes, you look at someone doing the Tour de France,
- 37:42they're on their turbo, I don't know how long before the race,
- 37:45but they're on there for a long time.
- 37:47If they're doing a time trial, you know, I watched the whole
- 37:50time trial. If they're the top guys, they go
- 37:52last in the time trial. They're pretty much on the bike
- 37:55for the entirety of the time trial before they even then
- 37:58race. So that's got to be like an hour
- 38:00minimum post race as well. They jump back on the bike and
- 38:03I'm like, you've been cycling then for like 8-9 hours in the
- 38:06day and only five or six of those hours were actually the
- 38:09race. Same for marathon runners.
- 38:11They're running kilometers before they do their actual
- 38:14rates, which is mental. And I know that's a capacity
- 38:16thing and they're at the top of their sport, but everyone needs
- 38:18to be doing a relatively decent warm up to their ability.
- 38:23But I think your warm up especially has all of the
- 38:25components that I look at as a really effective warm up.
- 38:29And I use the anagram ramp, raise, activate, mobilize,
- 38:33potentiate, and the P, the potentiate or prepare.
- 38:36That's a better way to think about it.
- 38:37That's the more specific stuff now, the raise and the raise,
- 38:41that's your heart rate, that's your body temperature.
- 38:43You're doing that by sitting on the bike for 3K.
- 38:45Some people prefer to do the mobilize and activate first, so
- 38:49you can switch that and make it mop.
- 38:51So you might do mobilize, activate, then raise, but when
- 38:55it's something really low impact and low aerobic like a bike
- 38:59effort, it's easy enough to start with that.
- 39:01So if we want to keep it specific to high rocks and
- 39:04warming up for a high rocks race, I'd definitely jump on the
- 39:06bike first. Just get the heart rates going.
- 39:09The only other thing to think about logistics wise, just like
- 39:12warm up admin, there's not always that many bytes and it's
- 39:16very hard to not be British and polite and like, I know you go,
- 39:21you go, you have the bike, I'll wait.
- 39:23You've got to have your elbows out in the warm up zone and
- 39:25you've got to like own it and not get bullied because it's
- 39:28very easy to get bullied in the warm up zone.
- 39:30And if people are like standing around you and like huffing and
- 39:32puffing because you've been on it a long time, that's their
- 39:35problem. They can go and find another
- 39:36machine. You've got to be selfish in the
- 39:37warm up area if you want a good warm up.
- 39:39So ideally you start on a bike. If not then I'd go for a rowing
- 39:42machine as a good alternative and you want to sit on those
- 39:45for, I was going to say probably 5 minutes.
- 39:47You're doing a little bit longer, which is OK, but
- 39:49probably somewhere around 5 minutes.
- 39:51Just super easy starting to get the, I call it the juices
- 39:54flowing, but that's letting the engine start exactly warming up
- 39:57the oil temperature. Then you're doing your
- 39:59activation stuff. That's going to be slightly
- 40:02different for everyone. I've got lots of specific ones,
- 40:05my glutes and my hips and my lower back to make sure I'm
- 40:07feeling good. But there's lots of good ones
- 40:09you can do. And a really good tip, if you
- 40:12can take a band into the warm up zone because there's there's no
- 40:16bands in the warm up area. If you have like a theraband or
- 40:18some sort of band that you can use for hip and glute
- 40:21activation, do it. The only problem is you have to
- 40:23then find someone before throw the band out.
- 40:26Yeah, yeah. If you're on your first lap,
- 40:28Chuck out of the pocket or find someone just before you go into
- 40:31the tunnel to give that to or hide in the warm up area or do
- 40:34something like or just whatever. Yeah, but having a band is
- 40:38really, really helpful. There's other exercises you can
- 40:41do if you don't have a band, but that's one of my top tips is try
- 40:44and have a band when you go into the warm up area.
- 40:46Then you've got your mobilizing stuff, which is a little bit of
- 40:48stretching. But like you do, I'd keep this
- 40:50really dynamic and keep moving and keep it really specific to
- 40:53the movements that you're doing in the actual race.
- 40:55So whether you're doing world's greatest stretch, it's nice to
- 40:58get the rotation through the upper back, but it's also a
- 41:00lunge position. So you're starting to open up
- 41:02the hips and the lower back a little bit as well.
- 41:04The one thing that I would do differently is that the P, the
- 41:07potential kind of the prepare for the race.
- 41:09This is the really specific bit. That's when I would probably get
- 41:12on the sled and just like start. And again, it's specific.
- 41:15And if you don't for you the sleds no issue because it's
- 41:18light. For me, I know the sleds I don't
- 41:20know very that far lighter relative.
- 41:23For me the sleds are sticky points.
- 41:25So I want to feel the movement pattern and make sure I've had
- 41:27to play around with it. And that's a confidence build
- 41:30for me. It's like I need to push the
- 41:32said. It's going to feel easy.
- 41:33I go into that part of the warm up with a really positive mental
- 41:37attitude, push it for a little bit, don't tie my legs out too
- 41:40much, but go all right. The said's going to move well
- 41:42for me today. See, the reason I don't do that
- 41:44is just in case that doesn't happen, it's because I've been
- 41:47to too many races. And I know this has been a
- 41:48consistent thing that we've always spoken about and everyone
- 41:50speaks about in in hire specifically, but every single
- 41:53lane feels different. And the number of times I have
- 41:57done the sled in the warm up and then done the sled in the raves
- 42:02and it felt so different. And what can be really bad, it
- 42:05is I my brain only works negatively around that.
- 42:08So if I push the sled in the warm up area and it feels light,
- 42:11I'm like, it's going to be heavy, it's going to be heavier
- 42:13than that. This is, this is tough.
- 42:16If I push the sled and it feels heavy, I'm immediately like,
- 42:18shit, this is heavy. Yeah.
- 42:20So that is a cat. I don't let it get in my head
- 42:23because I don't touch. It and that's fine that's that's
- 42:25then for me justification enough for you to not have to push the
- 42:28sled like ideally in your training you'll have done and
- 42:30that's my point as well because I know I can move I still.
- 42:32Hear or not move. Yeah, I still hear horror
- 42:34stories of people being like, oh, the first time I pull the
- 42:36sled is in the warm up area. That's so true for me as well.
- 42:39That's like my very. First race was the first time.
- 42:40Yeah, exactly. It's like, how is that?
- 42:42But I think that this this sport has evolved now on people are a
- 42:45bit more experienced and there's access in gyms to pull sleds a
- 42:48little bit more now. The only other thing that I
- 42:50would also do differently from your warm up to my warm up is
- 42:54once you've done all of your protocol, you then hop back on
- 42:57the bike and just keep the legs spinning, which is great for
- 42:59keeping blood flow and keeping you warm and keeping you ready.
- 43:03But for me, it's basically right before I go to the tunnel that I
- 43:08spike my heart rate to its highest point.
- 43:11Because what I'm thinking about doing is, and this is, this is
- 43:13the same analogy with the engine warming up.
- 43:16I want my heart rate to be at least as high as it's going to
- 43:19be in the race as it is in the warm up.
- 43:22Because what that does is it kind of just prepares the body.
- 43:26This is not the the official Physiology, but it prepares the
- 43:29body for the effort. So it's like you've opened up
- 43:31the lungs, you've got the heart beating, you've got the blood
- 43:33pumping as a really basic way of thinking about it to the point
- 43:37that it's going to be in the race, maybe not quite as high
- 43:40and obviously not sustained for the amount of time as it will be
- 43:43in the race. But so I get on the skiag
- 43:47ideally because that's a good one to get my heart rate going.
- 43:50It's very easy. And typically there's one
- 43:52available and I'll do some efforts in some capacity, but my
- 43:56efforts are much shorter than what you were doing.
- 43:58So you're doing minute 4530. I'll probably do like 15
- 44:02seconds, like RIP the handles off it and then like 45 seconds
- 44:06Modra a couple of times until I can feel my heart rate until I'm
- 44:10breathing. I want to feel that breathing.
- 44:11I want to feel sweaty. So that's my other thing.
- 44:13In the warm up area, we do the sweat check.
- 44:15Make sure you're sweaty in the warm up area.
- 44:17And that's the thing that people are petrified of.
- 44:19Yeah, because they're like, I've used all my energy in the warm
- 44:22up zone. I'm like, no, you're all good.
- 44:24Yeah, you want to feel like that.
- 44:26Honestly it makes such a big difference.
- 44:27If you're not warming up effectively and you start
- 44:30warming up properly, skyrocket your performance instantly.
- 44:33Big time. And I think one thing that I
- 44:35would give is a massive piece of advice here is I find it
- 44:37interesting some of the differences that we have if you
- 44:40and I, and it probably is going to happen.
- 44:43Did a double SI think the difference between US and maybe
- 44:45some of the people that might be listening to this is we would
- 44:48fuck off like you would do your I would do your OK.
- 44:51What you don't want to do is get caught in the trap of my
- 44:54partner's doing this. So I'm going to do that with
- 44:55them. If it's not your warm up and you
- 44:57don't know it works for you, it doesn't.
- 44:59Work. It's really funny because I've
- 45:00gone into the warm up area when I've done double S before and
- 45:03that that we've walked in together the next time I see
- 45:06them and they're in the tunnel. Yeah.
- 45:07We haven't even coordinated going to the tunnel.
- 45:09It's like, I know I want to be in the tunnel for X amount of
- 45:12minutes. They want to be in the tunnel
- 45:13for X amount of minutes. I'll just meet you there.
- 45:15Yeah. That's and that's exactly it.
- 45:17And I think that is also a race experience thing as well.
- 45:19But I think that's a common flaw is the people get so caught up
- 45:22and maybe get caught up in the nose because they stick around
- 45:25their partner, they talk through all the race tactics beforehand
- 45:27and you're not actually warming up.
- 45:29You're now just stressing and you basically want to go in.
- 45:32You want to be like, done. My warm up ticked all those
- 45:33boxes. Now it's race time.
- 45:35There's my partner, little fist bump off.
- 45:38I think also as well, don't fall into the trap of getting into
- 45:41the tunnel too soon because people go in like as soon as the
- 45:46wave before them's gone, they're in the tunnel and it's not,
- 45:48you're staying there for like 10 minutes.
- 45:50Yeah. And it's just, it's not
- 45:53conducive. You then your body temperature's
- 45:55lowering, your heart rate's lowering, and you're just
- 45:57standing there just stressing because it is really stimulating
- 46:01environment. That's a stressful place to be
- 46:02if you've never been in the tunnel before.
- 46:05So yeah, don't go too early. And I've, I've forced, well,
- 46:09Hugh, who obviously works with you on Rockstar, so I've, I've
- 46:13done a double s with you and I forced him to actually start
- 46:15late because it was in London when it was the last chance
- 46:18qualifiers for the men's league 15 double s.
- 46:20And I wanted to watch who won. So I was peeking through the
- 46:23back of the warm up area and I heard the big noise.
- 46:25I was like, and I was like, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 46:29They're on like 98, Watch them go.
- 46:31And then we went out there. That was nice because the whole
- 46:33time I wasn't thinking about my race I was doing.
- 46:35That would be really stressful. For me, I wouldn't like that.
- 46:38We wouldn't do that when we race together, right?
- 46:40Well, I think that was a good lead up to to the event that
- 46:44we're hosting. So again, try and take what
- 46:46we've given you there and apply that because on the day we'll
- 46:50obviously be there, we can help you out with little things, but
- 46:52we would rather you turned up and got on with what works for
- 46:54you. Maybe consider those things to
- 46:56try and your warm up if you haven't already and then you can
- 46:59get in and and have a you've. Got to, you've got to use that.
- 47:01That's what the simulation is. It's like practice.
- 47:03It's like you're a football team.
- 47:04You train in the week and then you, you, you play your match on
- 47:07the weekend. This is practice.
- 47:08This is where you're practicing different moves or like corners
- 47:11or free kicks, that kind of thing.
- 47:13Maybe try a different pacing strategy, try some different
- 47:15things. Play around with it.
- 47:16Like you say, interfuelling. We didn't even discuss that, but
- 47:19if you want to have gels during, try it.
- 47:21See exactly. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't.
- 47:23And I actually sort of avoided that as a topic because I know
- 47:26there's a but a lot of people think of one way and I have
- 47:29tried multiple different things and I, through just process of
- 47:31elimination, have found what I rely on.
- 47:34But yeah, it's very personal and very specific to you.
- 47:37But that's why the simulation's so good.
- 47:39It's because it's going to help you figure out what works best
- 47:42for you. Exactly.
- 47:44Now we need to move on to the next part of the podcast, which
- 47:48is the Grind My Gears part. So I'll let you start this week.
- 47:53What has been grinding your gears or what have you had
- 47:55submitted? You know what, I've, I've had a
- 47:58pretty, pretty low key week where I haven't actually had
- 48:01that many things annoy me. And it's funny that we were
- 48:04mentioning the airport so much earlier because one of my grind
- 48:07my gears is when people go through the airport and there's
- 48:11two pain points for me. You know, the travelators, the
- 48:14long travelators and then escalators by the stairs.
- 48:17It really grinds my gears when people use those two things.
- 48:22You're about to sit on the plane or you've just got off the plane
- 48:25and this is it really grinded my gears when I was going to New
- 48:29Zealand. And we've sat on the plane for
- 48:3017 hours. And then you see the flight of
- 48:33stairs and I'm like, that thing's glowing.
- 48:35Like I want to get up those stairs.
- 48:37I'm going to double step those stairs because I've been sat
- 48:39down for so long. And people just mill off to the
- 48:41side and go up the escalator. I'm like, move your body.
- 48:44Like move your legs. Come on.
- 48:46So travel later, I'll use. But you'll walk on it.
- 48:50I'm walking on it. Yeah, I was about to say,
- 48:51there's no way I'm standing still on that thing.
- 48:53No. Surely, surely the people you're
- 48:55with, one's on the travel later. One's not a new race.
- 48:57Oh, I used to do that as a kid all the time.
- 48:59Oh yeah, yeah. When I was a kid, yeah.
- 49:00Yeah, I. Mean don't get me wrong I'm
- 49:02always racing if the travel later is too busy yeah and I'm
- 49:05walking I'm beating everybody that's going away on the travel
- 49:07always even if I have to do not I.
- 49:09Don't know, we're racing. Oh, we're racing.
- 49:11Yeah, there's never a new outside.
- 49:13Just use the stairs. Escalator.
- 49:15I would use it if it's empty but otherwise 100% but.
- 49:17You standing on the escalator? When you walk, I'll walk up
- 49:21there. So OK, this isn't exclusive to
- 49:23the to the to the airport, it's tube stations as well.
- 49:27I always I think I'll. Walk up the escalator.
- 49:31Yeah, yeah. But there's, yeah, I'll walk
- 49:34down the escalator as well. But if there's a lift, I always
- 49:38take the fire stairs, fire, fire exit.
- 49:40I agree apart from there's one station in London, someone and
- 49:44someone listened to this. One of the exact station there's
- 49:46a station in London is at Highgate that's got.
- 49:47Most steps 300 and something, yeah.
- 49:49Because I knew about. I did that recently by accident.
- 49:52Yeah, and and it will remain. But the problem is because my
- 49:55local tube station, it's 79 steps or 179 steps, and I do
- 50:00that pretty much daily. And then I got to Highgate and
- 50:03I'd forgotten the number 179, and I saw like 300 and
- 50:07something, and I was like, well, that's only like 20 more than I
- 50:10do. And then I'm like, Oh my God,
- 50:12this is this. Yeah.
- 50:14And it's a spiral, so the steps aren't very big people coming
- 50:17out the way. Yeah, I'm.
- 50:17Like I'm pretty fit on the stairs, but that was that was
- 50:20tough. On the tube thing, we actually
- 50:23had someone write in and they've actually echoed something I've
- 50:26previously said. But I just want to remind people
- 50:28that this wasn't just me. People who aren't ready with
- 50:31their contactless or Oyster cards at the gate, like people
- 50:33are still doing this. Did they not hear it?
- 50:35Yeah, come on, I. Thought we'd all bucked our
- 50:37ideas. Another one that I've got from
- 50:40Al has written in. I love this one.
- 50:42Every active brand dropping out a camera range.
- 50:46No, turn it at me. Yeah, I mean.
- 50:48I've probably bought from. I was going to say, I was going
- 50:50to say I'm pretty sure everyone I know owns one, but the fact
- 50:52that every single brand has brought out seemingly the
- 50:54identical. I got the question last night
- 50:57actually. He's now that or that.
- 50:59I was like, no, no, they asked. So how much real tree do you
- 51:04actually own now? I was like, the fact that I
- 51:07can't tell you off the top of my head is tough.
- 51:10No, keep it coming. I love it.
- 51:13So I've got another one from Dez, which is people on their
- 51:17phones not looking where they're going.
- 51:18That's standard classic and also came in with official race
- 51:22pictures of someone recording themselves crossing a finish.
- 51:27Line shut up. I haven't seen that, but that is
- 51:30that. Yeah, I can understand it might
- 51:32be frustrating. I have a personal one which has
- 51:36kind of set me off from someone else's TikTok so I'm kind of
- 51:40stealing around my gears but I'm just adding to it here.
- 51:43There is a girl who ran Chicago Marathon.
- 51:46She posted her photos online and she got a message about 5 days
- 51:49later from one of her friends saying is this not you and
- 51:54forwarded an influencers post which had their face
- 51:58photoshopped onto her body. She has still her race number
- 52:02and the audacity to put as the caption not the time I wanted
- 52:07with her time, not the time I wanted but got it done anyway.
- 52:11There has been quite, quite the number of fake marathon photos
- 52:17with influential people. And in fact, I was actually
- 52:21listening to another podcast which covered the fact that
- 52:23Harry Styles ran a sub three marathon.
- 52:25Did you hear that? He obviously ran under a fake?
- 52:27Yeah, yeah, yeah. Now.
- 52:28People getting upset with that. People getting upset with you.
- 52:31I've heard a few reasons, and again, this was on this other
- 52:33podcast, as to why I saw this clip as well.
- 52:36So yeah, my personal opinion is just that it was a safety thing
- 52:40for them because if you have seen any of these people in
- 52:44like, YouTube videos or whatever, it takes 10 seconds
- 52:47before there's hundreds of people around them.
- 52:48Yeah. And so I've heard creative ideas
- 52:52being that Berlin Marathon didn't want their website to
- 52:55crash in terms of chase. And do you know what it probably
- 52:57would also have? Happened on the Internet.
- 52:59I'm also like, do you think Harry Styles fans would have
- 53:01really been bothered to go and track him?
- 53:03No, that's so true. That's so true.
- 53:07But I also I. Like that that theory.
- 53:08I, I watched a great video before technology is what
- 53:13technology is now with like chips and everything like that.
- 53:17There was a woman who won the Boston Marathon with a two hour
- 53:2031 finish and she was reported by one person as being seen, I
- 53:27think 800 meters out from the finish, starting the race,
- 53:31running across, basically collapsing and being helped by
- 53:34she goes to the to to finish the race.
- 53:38She's claiming the win everything like that.
- 53:39The news reporter, she's brilliant.
- 53:42She's absolutely mugging this woman off.
- 53:44She's like, so you know, what was your last marathon?
- 53:47A 258? And that was only a a matter of
- 53:49weeks ago. So what did you change in your
- 53:51training? And she was like, Oh no, I just
- 53:55had a great day today And, and the reporters like, well, we
- 53:58missed you all of our checkpoints and we're watching
- 54:00all of them come through. So you know, you are, you are a
- 54:02mystery winner. What's the mystery behind it?
- 54:04Have you have you been increasing your interval
- 54:05training? And this woman is the worst
- 54:08liar. She goes, you're the second
- 54:11person to mention intervals. I don't know what they are.
- 54:13What, what's interval training? And the reporters, just like a
- 54:16lot of runners do interval training.
- 54:20We'll have to verify this result and come back.
- 54:22And it was just like there, there's so many people even
- 54:24today that try and fake doing a marathon or even the time they
- 54:27get, which is those twins or, or some well known influences in
- 54:30America. I think in America who got a
- 54:33taxi from one point to one point and when their chip didn't go
- 54:37through a timer, they said that it was an error.
- 54:39They uploaded their Strava time, which was actually someone else
- 54:42that did race all of this. It happens.
- 54:44It's amazing. The the Harry Styles thing, like
- 54:47I, I think it truly is like a genuine, I don't want people to
- 54:49know I'm racing this race so I don't get swamped when I'm
- 54:52there. People don't try and run with
- 54:53me. All of the rest.
- 54:54I'm sure that is genuine. But yeah, it's it's interesting
- 54:57that people get upset because it's a major if you're racing
- 55:00under someone else's name, that shouldn't count, but it is.
- 55:04And also like it's Harry Styles, like the whole world now knows
- 55:08he ran that marathon anyway. So if he just entered under his
- 55:10own name, what difference would it have actually really made?
- 55:12But you you don't know, maybe, yes, he's being advised by a
- 55:15security team or whatever. And who knows?
- 55:17Like you don't know what it's like to be A to be a very well
- 55:21known a list celebrity and. The interesting thing is a lot
- 55:23of people that would have been fangirling or fanboying over him
- 55:26probably wouldn't have been able to keep up.
- 55:28So I was actually thinking maybe in the race it would disrupt his
- 55:30race, but. No, all everything about it that
- 55:32marathon is is just truly go to the fact that he ran it in such
- 55:36hot weather in a long sleeve black T-shirt and ran under an
- 55:40alias. It's just like, yeah, it's
- 55:42pretty cool. So I've got another one from our
- 55:45friends over at Diet Starts Monday podcast complaining that
- 55:48it's not even winter yet and they're seeing far too many
- 55:51gelays. It's always Gelay weather in
- 55:54London. I was saying to you beforehand,
- 55:58I actually dugout, I've got one of those heated gelays and I'm
- 56:01doing a filming event this week. I need to be up through the
- 56:03night because it's Backyard Ultra.
- 56:05I cannot wait to wear that thing.
- 56:06But I think that's that's a good purchase that the heated Gelay.
- 56:10Underrated. You can get them on Amazon.
- 56:12I'm going to go in with one now but it's it's really niche so I
- 56:15might have to explain it a bit. I don't know if I've done this
- 56:18one before, but it was recently just annoying me in the gym.
- 56:22It's especially specific to CrossFit, but it's kind of
- 56:26leaking into hyroxen and functional training, where
- 56:29you're doing a workout where you've got a cardio machine,
- 56:32let's say a row or a ski, and you have to get off and then do
- 56:36some other stuff, some burpees, some more boards.
- 56:38Doesn't really matter what it is.
- 56:39But then you get back on the machine for the next round and
- 56:42you don't reset your rower. So let's say the rowing target
- 56:45is 20 calories per round. You pull, you get to 20
- 56:49calories, you start doing the other stuff, you're moving
- 56:51around, you get back on the machine.
- 56:53Just because the fan or the flywheel is kept ticking over
- 56:57after you've got off, it's already registering your next
- 57:00calorie. So then your first pull of the
- 57:02next round gives you a calorie and it's like falsifying your
- 57:08effort. Whereas if I was to start from
- 57:10zero to pull, if I do one pull, I'm not getting a calorie.
- 57:15So you're cheating OK by not resetting the monitor if that
- 57:20makes sense. So when you get off or when you
- 57:22get back on you need to reset the monitor so it's back at 0.
- 57:25So your true effort gives you 1 calorie rather than just
- 57:29pulling. Try it when you're next in
- 57:30because I. Am I?
- 57:31I? Typically if I'm doing a workout
- 57:33like that, I will always think I will.
- 57:34I will keep going until I see the number.
- 57:36I don't stop at 19, no. No, no, no, that's not the
- 57:40problem. Like you will hit 20, but once
- 57:43you've hit 20, even when you're off, the fans still going.
- 57:46So still registering that you're rowing even though you're not
- 57:49so. Have I not put that energy in?
- 57:52So next round, do I I see what you're saying. 20 on average.
- 57:54No, OK, not that's the loophole not allowed.
- 57:57OK. And it's also just like it's
- 57:59it's age-old CrossFit gym etiquette.
- 58:02So yeah, it's just it's bad. That's good.
- 58:04They're not doing that. OK, has given me another one as
- 58:07well. I, I actually, I'm going to come
- 58:09in with a quick one that definitely needs mentioning.
- 58:11I don't think the person that you'll obviously know who I'm
- 58:14talking about will listen to this episode.
- 58:15If they do, I'm so sorry, but it definitely needed to bring it
- 58:18up. Wearing gloves in high rocks.
- 58:23No comment. Wearing gloves in high rocks?
- 58:24You know what, like I kind of get it.
- 58:27I'm sure it can improve. I would also argue that if
- 58:30again, everyone can do the the weights in high rocks, maybe
- 58:33just need a little bit more practice.
- 58:35But what is not allowed is wearing gloves in high rocks and
- 58:41then being bad at the thing you're wearing gloves for
- 58:43anyway. Like still like, I'm fortunate
- 58:46enough to to be sat here and say that I have done.
- 58:49The farmers carry a pro weight 32 kilos unbroken.
- 58:52All right, all right. I certainly have not worn gloves
- 58:57and still not been able to do it to the point where they like
- 58:59fall out of my hand. That shouldn't be allowed.
- 59:01Do you reckon the gloves were actually detrimental?
- 59:03No. All right, you're putting me in
- 59:05a tough spot. Here, I know, I know.
- 59:06I'm putting you in a tough spot. You don't have to comment, I'm
- 59:09not going to. But what I would say is I think
- 59:11if you, I think hire should introduce a rule if you choose
- 59:14to wear gloves and you fail the exercise in such a manner,
- 59:18Instant, instant disjalification.
- 59:19They were colour coordinated to shorts though.
- 59:23They were. I don't think that saves the
- 59:25fact. If anything, that drew more
- 59:28attention and draw And you, you've planned the outfit so far
- 59:31that you haven't planned. The the just.
- 59:34The grip. If it was such a benefit to your
- 59:38performance, everyone would be wearing gloves.
- 59:41I actually think more people would if if it hadn't just been
- 59:45shot on so much. Yeah, I just have like an
- 59:48inherent hatred for gloves in the gym anyway.
- 59:51So yeah, that's a tough one. Well, anyway, we, we maybe,
- 59:55let's leave it there. We'll leave it there.
- 59:58We're going to move on to the sort of.
- 1:00:02Last part, which is a quick one before we get into the game, I
- 1:00:05want to know in your opinion, when should you quit on a
- 1:00:08workout? When should you actually quit
- 1:00:10and we're not just being like oh you should never quit, not some
- 1:00:13motivational bullshit. When should you stop in the
- 1:00:18same? If you're going too hard, if
- 1:00:20you're in the actual race, if you're in just a session that
- 1:00:22has been programmed or you've planned for yourself.
- 1:00:25This is so subjective and it's such a personal thing and it has
- 1:00:31so much to do with your mental capacity and current state and
- 1:00:39also your physical. And it's always going to be
- 1:00:42different on any different day. And you'll, you'll be able to
- 1:00:47relate to this where you go to the gym and you're doing a hard
- 1:00:49workout and you're like, I can't do the paces, I can't do the
- 1:00:53reps unbroken. I'm not doing the weights that I
- 1:00:55want to do. And this is just like really
- 1:00:57shit. Do I just stop because this
- 1:01:00isn't worth it? You can argue it so many
- 1:01:02different ways. It's like, do I stop because
- 1:01:05mentally I just don't want to be here and want to give myself the
- 1:01:08break that that could be a good justification?
- 1:01:11Should I stop because if I keep going, I might end up hurting
- 1:01:13myself because I'm not concentrating and I might do
- 1:01:15something stupid which could cause injury?
- 1:01:17That's another thing to think about.
- 1:01:19Do I feel this way because my body's hurting in a certain way
- 1:01:22and as as a result of it, hurting could cause injury.
- 1:01:25So it's like it's such a Gray area.
- 1:01:27It's so difficult for me to let go.
- 1:01:29Yeah, at this point you should stop.
- 1:01:31But what I what I do is I use examples from like members in my
- 1:01:35class when they come to me and they're like just not feeling it
- 1:01:38today or this is really sore. My elbow hurts or my back hurts
- 1:01:43and I might just try and push through anyway.
- 1:01:45If they say that to me, I might. It's not worth it.
- 1:01:47You're going to stop or we're going to modify the workout.
- 1:01:49We're going to do something different or the fact that
- 1:01:52you're here is fantastic. You're doing a really good job.
- 1:01:54Why don't you just do something super low skill, jump on the
- 1:01:56bike, spin your legs, get a bit sweaty, feel better about
- 1:01:58yourself and then leave. So there's like there's lots of
- 1:02:01different layers to it and for me, I don't want to go down the
- 1:02:04whole David Goggins like you. You got to keep pushing the
- 1:02:07whole time. You should never quit because I
- 1:02:09don't believe in that at all. I think there is a time and a
- 1:02:11place. If you're in the SIM and you're
- 1:02:13pushing really hard and you're like mentally this is really
- 1:02:16difficult. That's not the time to quit.
- 1:02:18That's why you're there. Same in a race.
- 1:02:20There's there's never really a point in a race where you should
- 1:02:23go. This is hurting so much.
- 1:02:25I need to stop. Like it's meant to be difficult.
- 1:02:28You're there to push yourself to, to, to do a difficult thing.
- 1:02:32But if you're in a race and you're like limping because you
- 1:02:35ruptured your Achilles, maybe that's the time to stop.
- 1:02:38Yeah, I think one of the most noticeable things about
- 1:02:41experienced athletes is their understanding of quitting.
- 1:02:45And I, I used to think this when I was when I was younger and
- 1:02:48like really motivated, I was able to see progress and pretty
- 1:02:52much every session I did because I was so new to different forms
- 1:02:54of training that I thought, I see these people going in
- 1:02:57sessions and they like go in saying they're going to do one
- 1:02:59thing. They come in, come out having
- 1:03:01absolutely not done that. Like that could never be me.
- 1:03:03Actually, I couldn't be more proud of the fact that that is
- 1:03:05me. Like, I hold myself very
- 1:03:07accountable to not quitting things for various reasons, but
- 1:03:11that doesn't mean I don't change the outcome.
- 1:03:13Sure. And as a prime example, and the
- 1:03:16reason this sort of came up is I had a really tough session last
- 1:03:19week that on paper was super easy.
- 1:03:22Like it was supposed to be a reintroduction to some of the
- 1:03:24movements and hierarchs. And I really struggled.
- 1:03:26And I was talking to someone else about this and they they
- 1:03:27said they don't come from the hierarch space.
- 1:03:30And they said to me, yeah, but like, surely you should have
- 1:03:34just stopped. Like, when do you decide when to
- 1:03:36stop? And my argument was, OK, So as
- 1:03:39an example, there was as this workout was a series of
- 1:03:42movements that need to be done within an amount of time frame
- 1:03:44that considered rest. First two rounds, I was like,
- 1:03:47this is fine. I was getting about a minute's
- 1:03:49rest. That's what it was designed for.
- 1:03:51And then the third round came along, and I was like, wow, OK,
- 1:03:54this is tougher, but let me just eat into some of that rest.
- 1:03:58And then we'll have a slightly easier round and we'll come
- 1:03:59back. I was intending to do 6 rounds,
- 1:04:02so I wasn't even halfway at this point.
- 1:04:04I then got to the end of that round, including the rest, and
- 1:04:07I'd had maybe 20 seconds rest instead of the minute.
- 1:04:10And immediately I was like, that wasn't enough rest.
- 1:04:13Am I going to have another slur round?
- 1:04:15And I was like, actually, this whole thing is going to become a
- 1:04:17slog. And what was really annoying
- 1:04:18about that was, as I said, it was intended to be quite easy.
- 1:04:21There were certain tough elements, but the weight of
- 1:04:24everything was either the open weight or lighter than what I'm
- 1:04:28used to training. Sometimes it just feels like
- 1:04:30that. So it got to a point and I
- 1:04:31actually had a sit down where I gave myself an extra 2 minutes
- 1:04:34rest out of the workout where I just sat there and I was like,
- 1:04:37look, am I going to walk away from this?
- 1:04:40If I, if I walk away from it now after round 4, so I physically
- 1:04:44recover and do something different tomorrow and I move
- 1:04:47on. Or am I mentally going to beat
- 1:04:50myself up that tomorrow's workout actually becomes such a
- 1:04:52chore? And I hate that one as well.
- 1:04:55And so I bargained with myself and said, look, you can just
- 1:04:58have a minute from whenever you finish the exercises.
- 1:05:01Just do the exercises as well as you can and then finish the
- 1:05:04workout. And in the end, looking back on
- 1:05:06the splits of everything, I didn't even do that far off the
- 1:05:08original goal, maybe 1520 seconds per round longer.
- 1:05:11But the thought process of do I quit and what's the benefit
- 1:05:17physically versus mentally was something that I was able to
- 1:05:20understand and account for myself.
- 1:05:22And I think that's one scenario where it came into that.
- 1:05:25There's other times where I've been doing running intervals and
- 1:05:27I'm like Carl, I can't, I can't go.
- 1:05:30And prime example was actually this year a couple of nights
- 1:05:32ago. It's in the last effort.
- 1:05:34And I was pushing and I was like, it's my last effort.
- 1:05:36I don't normally want to push too hard to destroy the stimulus
- 1:05:39to work out, but I'm going to push a little bit, see what is
- 1:05:42there. And then I had someone come
- 1:05:45along next to me and they were pushing, and they must have put
- 1:05:48about two meters in front of me. And I was like, I'm not gonna
- 1:05:51let him go. Yeah, like, OK, let's race.
- 1:05:54And I looked and I was like, I've got 55 seconds left.
- 1:05:57I don't think I can hold that. And then there was the classic
- 1:05:59thing coming back in the head of like, I can hold something for a
- 1:06:02minute, come on. And then you get through it.
- 1:06:04And I was like, OK, I'm glad I did that.
- 1:06:06And in reality, I was still performing above what I could.
- 1:06:09But then I had to make this decision of like, do I quit on
- 1:06:12this level that I think I can hold?
- 1:06:14And it's this sort of back and forth.
- 1:06:15But absolutely pretty much every session I go into comes with a
- 1:06:19slight different outcome, whether that's I've actually
- 1:06:21pushed myself harder or I've tailed on.
- 1:06:23And that's purely from being in those situations so much that,
- 1:06:25you know, and I think there isn't a blanket statement.
- 1:06:27So I'm glad you didn't say like one thing to think now every
- 1:06:31scenario is different and you only learn from yourself.
- 1:06:35What I personally still believe, and in two years time I might
- 1:06:39look back and say that's not right, is I never like to walk
- 1:06:42away from a workout on the dot. Yeah, I always would do
- 1:06:45something else. If I go into a session and like
- 1:06:47things are really hurting. I'm super fatigued.
- 1:06:50I'm not getting much out of strength, I'm not getting much
- 1:06:52out of the conditioning side of things.
- 1:06:54Then I'll just have an easy session where I sit on a mic,
- 1:06:57sit on my own machine because at least I'm doing something.
- 1:06:58I'm getting a bit of a sweat on. There's going to be some benefit
- 1:07:01to my to my health from that. As long as I'm not doing
- 1:07:04anything too taxing. And mentally I'll step away from
- 1:07:06be like I still did something today.
- 1:07:08It's hard, isn't it, when you're like inherently competitive with
- 1:07:11yourself and other people, but when you're training by
- 1:07:14yourself, it's difficult to go. I'm just not going to do this
- 1:07:17because naturally it starts to like you, you kind of get
- 1:07:21negative connotations away from that.
- 1:07:23And, and like I truly do believe and it's really interesting
- 1:07:25hearing you talk like that. I do believe that you get so
- 1:07:28much mental benefit from not quitting.
- 1:07:34And like, if you are super easy with yourself and you go, yeah,
- 1:07:38I, I don't need to do that today or I'm not going to die and just
- 1:07:40walk away. Like you start to build up this
- 1:07:44like, I don't know how to explain it other than like you
- 1:07:47allow yourself to quit easily. So then when you are put in a
- 1:07:50situation which is difficult, let's say you're in the race
- 1:07:53situation, you go, I just don't need to push that hard actually,
- 1:07:57or you don't have the ability to really hold yourself accountable
- 1:08:01to be able to push hard. So, so much of this comes down
- 1:08:04to your mental capacity more really than your your physical.
- 1:08:09You do need to be sensible though.
- 1:08:10If your body isn't feeling 100%, you've got to regulate the
- 1:08:13intensity. So every, every time I go into
- 1:08:17the gym, I have kind of like AI take a like a mental and
- 1:08:22physical. Both are out of five combined
- 1:08:25together. So I get a score out of 10.
- 1:08:28And it's always subjective because I always feel different
- 1:08:30based off how I slept, how I've eaten, just mentally, how I'm
- 1:08:33how I'm at that point. But if I'm under A5, then I'm
- 1:08:37typically going to regulate my intensity.
- 1:08:39I'm probably not going to lift as heavy.
- 1:08:40And like you said, I might just spin my legs on the bike.
- 1:08:43If I'm closer to A9 or A10, then I'm going to push really hard.
- 1:08:46So I have set sessions across the week, but I do the certain
- 1:08:51intensities on the day that match me.
- 1:08:54So yeah, maybe it says on this day, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 1:08:57Friday, Saturday, these are my days.
- 1:08:59But I might do Saturday's workout on Tuesday because I
- 1:09:01feel way better on Tuesday and I don't want to kind of predict
- 1:09:04how I feel on Saturday because I might get Saturday, I might feel
- 1:09:07like shit and then I don't want to do that session.
- 1:09:08So it's like just being sensible with your training.
- 1:09:10That does come with time and intuition and experience with
- 1:09:13actual. Training out 5 + 5 thing, yeah,
- 1:09:16I've not done that, but I quite like the approach of that, so I
- 1:09:18might take that in myself. I like it is super subjective,
- 1:09:21but it's always going to be subjective.
- 1:09:22And that's why sometimes I had this debate with someone the
- 1:09:25other day when you're doing percentage loading for strength
- 1:09:28work, if you go into the gym and it's five sets of five at 70%,
- 1:09:33whatever the movement is doesn't matter.
- 1:09:35You're like, that 70% for me is set in stone.
- 1:09:38And I know I'm so competitive that it doesn't matter how I
- 1:09:41feel. I'm going to try and do that 70%
- 1:09:43even though it might be detrimental.
- 1:09:45And it's at the point where you go and you're like, I'm sore,
- 1:09:47I'm tired, I don't want to be here mentally, I'm just not with
- 1:09:50it. You try and hit 70% and that's
- 1:09:52when you hurt yourself. So rather that 70% becomes an
- 1:09:55RPE relative perceived effort. Now it's 7 out of 10.
- 1:09:58That's what I was going to say. 7 out of 10 is relative to how I
- 1:10:01feel that day, which could be 20 percent lighter than my actual
- 1:10:0570%, but it feels like a 7 out of 10 effort.
- 1:10:08And I know it's super subjective and it's not as effective for
- 1:10:10efficient strength training, but it's a really solid way of
- 1:10:13actually getting the most out of your training in a sensible way.
- 1:10:15I. Did wonder when you said that it
- 1:10:17was out of 10 if it was going to be related to an RPE scale.
- 1:10:19So yeah, OK, I really like that. Now before we move into the
- 1:10:23game, I just want to highlight the fact that a lot of these
- 1:10:26topics that we end up talking about and the grind my gears,
- 1:10:28that sort of thing, as you would have heard, especially in this
- 1:10:30upload come from you guys that are listening.
- 1:10:32So if you do to be involved, we absolutely love having you as
- 1:10:35part of it. It helps us out also with making
- 1:10:37sure talk about the right thing. So at mindsets under score
- 1:10:40podcast is where to find the podcast page on things like
- 1:10:43Instagram, TikTok, also on YouTube.
- 1:10:46Some of you will actually be watching this now.
- 1:10:47So have a wave hello, but then you can also do things.
- 1:10:53Reposting some of our social media posts would be really
- 1:10:55handy, but feel free to absolutely slide into our DMS
- 1:10:59and give us some more information.
- 1:11:01We absolutely love having you involved.
- 1:11:03Now the next thing that you can be involved in is play along
- 1:11:05with this game. This is definitely a play along
- 1:11:07one, OK? Cool.
- 1:11:08Apparently I'm going to be good at this, so I'm looking forward
- 1:11:10to this week. Yeah.
- 1:11:10So for today. You've got the job of guessing
- 1:11:16how much it costs. I'm so good at that so.
- 1:11:19And I love a variety of different things, different
- 1:11:23equipment across different sports.
- 1:11:25And Angus job is going to be to guess how much they cost.
- 1:11:29Now I'm going to give you my phone.
- 1:11:31You can, yeah, that's where the the photos of the items are,
- 1:11:35right? You can zoom in, you can do
- 1:11:36whatever you want onto the photos, OK, But we're going to
- 1:11:38start 1 by 1. So I'm going to give you this.
- 1:11:41I've got all of the information on the products in my notebook,
- 1:11:45so have a little look at that. So.
- 1:11:46For those of you that are watching on YouTube, I will do
- 1:11:48you a solid and I'll put the photo of what I'm seeing on
- 1:11:51here. Those of you that are listening,
- 1:11:52I have a bike. It is cream coloured.
- 1:11:54It is seemingly a road bike. Incorrect.
- 1:11:58OK, it's would you like the details?
- 1:12:00Yeah. So this is this is a gravel
- 1:12:02bike. It's made by a brand called
- 1:12:04Envy, and the model is a mog Mog.
- 1:12:07So looking at that bike, you can do whatever detective work you
- 1:12:11would like to figure out how expensive.
- 1:12:13It is. I have one immediate question.
- 1:12:16OK, does the price of the bike include the pedals?
- 1:12:19Because there aren't any pedals in this photo.
- 1:12:21No. OK, for those of you who don't
- 1:12:23know, when you buy a nice bike, you actually don't get pedals
- 1:12:26with it. That's crazy.
- 1:12:27No, it's not crazy because the pedals will be dictated by the
- 1:12:29type of cleats you wear and the shoes you have.
- 1:12:32So. The bike's got single speed
- 1:12:34front gear system. That's interesting.
- 1:12:37Did it not? Well, yeah, it's a one buyer.
- 1:12:38It's a gravel bike. I didn't know that gravel bikes
- 1:12:41had that as standard. The untrained it's.
- 1:12:43Got double disc brakes. It's pretty standard for high
- 1:12:46level bikes. So you think it's a?
- 1:12:49There's no. Brand, first of all, like I
- 1:12:50would have said if there was a brand that's visible, but I.
- 1:12:52Can't think it's a high level bike.
- 1:12:54It could be, for as far as I'm aware it has Pirelli tires.
- 1:12:58Nice, that's very Formula One. Yeah, he's doing the good stuff.
- 1:13:03The whole I'm trying to see circulator, I'm trying to see if
- 1:13:07they're inner tube. No inner tube, can't really
- 1:13:09tell. Car bikes are expensive guys, so
- 1:13:15I'm going to go ahead and say that the whole thing with the
- 1:13:18wheel, everything I'm looking at, right?
- 1:13:19You get all of that. All of that, let's shoot for.
- 1:13:2537993799 Yeah, I was going to be really disappointed if you were
- 1:13:30close. OK, yeah, that bike cost 11
- 1:13:32grand. Oh my word, that's crazy.
- 1:13:35Yeah, 11 grand. OK, 11.
- 1:13:37Grand. I think if the bike doesn't have
- 1:13:38a brand on it, that's when you know it's.
- 1:13:40I didn't know if this was a doctored image.
- 1:13:43Yeah, as that oh bike. Yeah, OK.
- 1:13:44Also, wow, 11 grand slightly off.
- 1:13:47You're going to swipe across. OK, now the next OK, this is
- 1:13:52this is nice for you. So this is you can this is an
- 1:13:55NFL American football. You can buy this online.
- 1:13:58This one is allegedly the standard that you play with in
- 1:14:02the actual NFL. See, what's interesting is I
- 1:14:04should be able to give you an exact price for this.
- 1:14:06But yeah, inflation's happened since I bought.
- 1:14:08One do you know I I bought 1 because because can I ask a.
- 1:14:12Question though, did you buy like and is this a real leather?
- 1:14:16So I bought 1 because I wanted one to Chuck around and I was
- 1:14:19like, well I'll just get an American football and I want the
- 1:14:21one that they play with in the NFLI was shook off at how
- 1:14:25expensive it was. It is surprising.
- 1:14:29As long as the number I'm saying is correct, I'll get on to that.
- 1:14:32So I have bought one of these previously from a website called
- 1:14:38Football America in the UK which imports everything and I got it
- 1:14:41for I believe I paid £120 for it.
- 1:14:48What did you see it as recently? So that's your guess?
- 1:14:52That's my guess. 1/15 1:15 that's.
- 1:14:55Very good. Yeah, Well done.
- 1:14:56So I'm glad because when I did my when I did my aerodynamics
- 1:15:01final year masters project in aerodynamics at uni Flex.
- 1:15:06And I got now I got a budget to go and buy a ball.
- 1:15:09Oh nice. Which I didn't use for no jade.
- 1:15:12I just got a ball out of it. The budget was like £30.
- 1:15:15No the. Budget was up to £200 per
- 1:15:17student, but no one used it. So I was like, I'm using it.
- 1:15:19Yeah, obviously, obviously if luck for universities listen to
- 1:15:21this, that didn't happen. I also got a college one.
- 1:15:25OK, so I actually ever spent my budget.
- 1:15:26Oh cool, because that was also £120.
- 1:15:29But yeah, they are expensive. But if you actually look at like
- 1:15:32soccer footballs, if you buy one of the new ones from night
- 1:15:37you'll you'll notice that the cheap ones are well used to be
- 1:15:39like £10 but probably not like 2025.
- 1:15:41Apparently combined the nice ones are like 60-70.
- 1:15:44The actual Premier League standard ones are like 150 to
- 1:15:46160 is mad. But there is also a noticeable
- 1:15:50difference in how they react. Don't they have like?
- 1:15:52Sensors in the balls they've started to put in.
- 1:15:56Wilson have started doing some balls which got sensors in as
- 1:15:58well because they're hoping to bring in loads of like, more
- 1:16:01data and more data. Which again, sneak peek from my
- 1:16:04Masters project, actually doesn't really matter too much
- 1:16:08how much the ball spins, that sort of thing.
- 1:16:10If you can see that it's shit by the way it's thrown, yeah, it's
- 1:16:13shit. Yeah, Knowing the difference
- 1:16:14between the ball rotating two or three more times per minute
- 1:16:17makes no difference. Anyway, we're now sticking on
- 1:16:21the Wilson train. We are, yeah.
- 1:16:22So this is a Wilson Impact 99 badminton racket.
- 1:16:27OK. For those of you again that are
- 1:16:30looking on YouTube, this looks like a pretty generic racket.
- 1:16:33I don't see anything fancy like carbon.
- 1:16:35I didn't know if that'd come into the sport yet.
- 1:16:37I'm going to go ahead and say it's aluminium racket.
- 1:16:40Wilson's a well known brand. Nothing crazy about the grip
- 1:16:43here. We've not got like Bryce and
- 1:16:44Duchampo thick grips. Can I ask a question please?
- 1:16:49What was the site that you got the price of this from?
- 1:16:52No. OK, that's tough.
- 1:16:55Because if it's like it could be Sports Direct, it could be
- 1:16:57Wilson's Direct site. This could be like an elite.
- 1:16:59One. What was the name of it?
- 1:17:01The impact? 99 impact 99, that sounds
- 1:17:04budget, that sounds like a 99 flag.
- 1:17:07I'm going to go ahead and say this cost 399939, yeah.
- 1:17:14Do you know what that's like? Probably the average price from
- 1:17:17the site that I was looking at. OK, this costs £15 and I, I,
- 1:17:21your detective work was very impressive because it's from
- 1:17:24Sports Direct. OK, £15 and yeah, it's the, the
- 1:17:27name does give it away, but yeah, it's one of their budget
- 1:17:29rackets. But £15, you can't go wrong with
- 1:17:32that. No, I want to get solid bammons
- 1:17:33and that's so solid. For sure and and it's one of
- 1:17:35those where like that quite easily could have been £150.
- 1:17:39I like the fact that you know for most sports now it's the
- 1:17:42barrier to entry is horrible, but if you want to just go and
- 1:17:45freaking hit a shuttle culture and play badminton.
- 1:17:47So true. It's so good for from sports I
- 1:17:49love. Badminton, Yeah, we play back
- 1:17:50again. Oh, OK, here we go.
- 1:17:53Right. Let me talk you through these.
- 1:17:54These are the Nike Mercurial Vapor 16 Elites.
- 1:17:58So it's a football boot or a soccer shoe, whatever you want
- 1:18:02to call it. The special thing with these, I
- 1:18:06don't know if you'll be able to tell from the the pattern on the
- 1:18:08outside. It's a collab with Air Max 95.
- 1:18:11So I was going to say there was definitely a pretty special so.
- 1:18:16Honestly. Football booth, so I was going
- 1:18:18to. Say the name needs work because
- 1:18:20the name is like when you're trying to hit the word count,
- 1:18:23it's a bit long, too long. But I kind of also get it
- 1:18:26because it's this collaboration and you can kind of see that in
- 1:18:28the the waves that are on the side, but also where there's a
- 1:18:31slight detail going up to the laces.
- 1:18:33I like that. I appreciate that.
- 1:18:34That's a great issue. This is going to be A1 release
- 1:18:39of a kind. I don't want to say a
- 1:18:39one-of-a-kind necessarily, but this is the sort of thing that I
- 1:18:42would expect to find on stock X or similar sites and therefore
- 1:18:47I'm going to bump the price a bit.
- 1:18:48I would say for a good Nike football boot you'd probably be
- 1:18:52paying close to £200. So I'm going to go ahead and say
- 1:18:58this one maybe is. 1000 ish really Yeah retails on Nike for
- 1:19:05275 really OK so it's not a collector's item yet no OK
- 1:19:09because it's like it's a collab with 95 but.
- 1:19:13It's not like you're still internal.
- 1:19:14Yeah, yeah, yeah. OK, cool.
- 1:19:16But like I like your. Thought process was good.
- 1:19:18OK, Have we? Have we got more?
- 1:19:19Of course. Yeah.
- 1:19:20Amazing. So, Oh my word, Lewis Hamilton's
- 1:19:24F1 Ferrari. It's his.
- 1:19:26It's his current car that drives.
- 1:19:28All in yeah, so I know I I had an interesting fact that I
- 1:19:33learnt about 10 years ago. So again, could be quite well
- 1:19:36outdated with the price, but the steering wheel of these things
- 1:19:39alone is about 50 grand. Yep.
- 1:19:42The next thing to consider is that so much of that car is
- 1:19:46carbon fibre. That's not the main issue here
- 1:19:49is that there's obviously it's like you can't buy it.
- 1:19:51So there's no price of course. So the price I've got is I took
- 1:19:55a couple of different numbers from different sites of people
- 1:19:58speculating how much one of his cars would cost.
- 1:20:01And I've kind of got an average number across the lowest price
- 1:20:04point to what people speculate to be the highest price point.
- 1:20:07OK, so I'm going to go and I'm going to say the powertrain
- 1:20:10alone. So the engine and the sort of
- 1:20:12driving and everything like that, I'm going to say that
- 1:20:13comes to probably around 8 mil tires.
- 1:20:19I mean, if we just consider that's for on a car, let's say
- 1:20:22like 100 grand for those. For the tires.
- 1:20:27Crazy. Well you know Bugatti Veyron.
- 1:20:29They only last 16,000 miles, the tires at Max and they cost 16
- 1:20:32grand each. Yeah, and these the last a
- 1:20:34couple of laps. Yeah.
- 1:20:36We've gone 100K for four tires. Yeah, right.
- 1:20:40Let's rack it up. Well, I mean, this could end.
- 1:20:42I mean, you make it sound expensive. 50K for the steering
- 1:20:44but everything else make it sound expensive. 100K for four
- 1:20:47pieces of rubber so. I'm going to.
- 1:20:50No way. That's how much tires cost.
- 1:20:53Yeah, I'd be really interested, so.
- 1:20:55I'm going to go ahead and say this whole thing all in, not
- 1:20:59including Lewis. Yeah, you can't buy Lewis.
- 1:21:02Is 48 mil. Oh, he shot high.
- 1:21:11So the highest estimate that I saw was 20 mil.
- 1:21:14Oh really? I got the average I averaged out
- 1:21:16to 16,000,000. OK, which is shocking to think
- 1:21:20that when they crash it, I just have to.
- 1:21:22Rebuild it. See, do you know what's really
- 1:21:24annoying and certain very engineering of me is to think I
- 1:21:27was kind of factoring in something that I really
- 1:21:29shouldn't have factored in for the way we're playing this game,
- 1:21:31which is I was thinking about the amount of time investment
- 1:21:34from all the engineers. I'm like, all that, yeah, OK, so
- 1:21:382020 million. Understandable.
- 1:21:39And that's why you can also understand why.
- 1:21:41They get upset when they crack and.
- 1:21:43They crack and it's so like I hate it and love it when a when
- 1:21:47a driver goes sorry guys as soon as they hit the wall because
- 1:21:50like you have to say it but also you don't really care.
- 1:21:54Yeah, you don't care. Yeah, OK.
- 1:21:56Next we have. This is OK.
- 1:21:58This is just fun fact. Ryan, owner of E1, the gym I
- 1:22:02work at, Yeah, he's just started sponsoring the local hockey
- 1:22:05team. I love you so much.
- 1:22:08And it's on their shirt. And we we really want to get
- 1:22:10these whopping hockey club shirts.
- 1:22:12But I I said to Ron, I was like, why can't you have like
- 1:22:14sponsored something like an F1 team?
- 1:22:16Yeah, why don't we get the E1F1 team?
- 1:22:19Maybe not in budget, but that would be sweet.
- 1:22:21So this is this is the sore ultra light race vest.
- 1:22:26Now this piece of material costs.
- 1:22:29No, it doesn't cost because that would that would give.
- 1:22:31The ruining the game. This weighs 44 grams. 40. 4G so
- 1:22:36it does look nice do. You know what?
- 1:22:37That doesn't mean much to me because I've never really
- 1:22:39thought about how much anything I wear way too much apart from
- 1:22:43like nice, stylish, that different T-shirt, newer Mo
- 1:22:46Farah then that is. I understand it's not even skin
- 1:22:50tight and it's. Hideous.
- 1:22:53No, that's that is cool. I don't know.
- 1:22:56Kind of looks like something out of the 70s.
- 1:22:59Yeah, on the dance floor. But just bearing in mind all
- 1:23:01that is, is a running vest. Yeah, like a SIM.
- 1:23:04But that material? Makes it more expensive because
- 1:23:07that is all it is. Nice.
- 1:23:08So I knew you'd be good at this game.
- 1:23:10So that sounds expensive. The colors in there, they're
- 1:23:14going to make it seem like it wasn't just plastic printed.
- 1:23:17I think this vest alone 4599. £90.
- 1:23:24Oh my word. And you know why I had to put
- 1:23:26this in? Because when I ran my 10K the
- 1:23:28other day, I didn't have a a vest that fit me anymore.
- 1:23:32And I went online to buy a vest and I'm like, I'm a fashionable
- 1:23:36guy. I'll go to Saw, I'll go to
- 1:23:37Satisfy, I'll go to. I was like shocked, £90.
- 1:23:41I thought Nike were expensive. That Aeroswift vest, 70 quid,
- 1:23:46£70 for a vest, £90 for vest. There's vests I could have.
- 1:23:49There was a vest, £150. Clothes should not be
- 1:23:52approaching drug prices. 2 LB a gram is what we're talking
- 1:23:57there. 44 grams, I mean, I don't, I don't really know drug
- 1:24:00prices. I imagine it's far more than £2
- 1:24:02per gram. I imagine it's far more than £2
- 1:24:05a gram but 2 LB a gram for. Wild, isn't it?
- 1:24:08For something that, like I said, I'm not particularly drawn to,
- 1:24:11is mental. You are buying the brand at that
- 1:24:14point. Yeah, 100%.
- 1:24:15I mean, there's no way you're buying performance out that when
- 1:24:17I said it's not even skin tight or anything like that, I'm just
- 1:24:20like, OK, next. Oh.
- 1:24:22OK, so you've got here a set from 4 iron down to pitching
- 1:24:27wedge, so you get 7 irons, but this is the Mizuno down to.
- 1:24:31Pitching edge. Only so 4 to pitch, yeah.
- 1:24:34So no sound wedges or any other way?
- 1:24:36OK cool. This guy knows nothing about
- 1:24:37golf. No I do.
- 1:24:38I just wanted to confirm. You buy you buy your wedges Yeah
- 1:24:40yeah. So these are the Mizuno pro S1
- 1:24:44irons. I thought they were called MP
- 1:24:46fours but the website told me S 1 so I don't know but that's
- 1:24:50like a a nice forged blade. So for those that don't know
- 1:24:55about golf, Forged is good is put it basically nice.
- 1:25:00Mizuno historically makes some of the nicest clubs believe
- 1:25:03they're Japanese and. That's that's a great, great set
- 1:25:07of lines if you can have. Yeah, I was going to say these
- 1:25:09are, these are real nice. Hard to hit, but real nice.
- 1:25:13Very hard to hit. I've actually hit MP fours
- 1:25:15before and it's just not the one.
- 1:25:16Yeah. Until you find the one spot and
- 1:25:19it's get everything. Yeah, yeah, it's tough.
- 1:25:23Irons can be incredibly expensive for a set and I'm
- 1:25:27going to say that these are definitely towards the top end.
- 1:25:318999989999 no more yeah, yeah, one.
- 1:25:38Can I have another? Yeah, please 146999.
- 1:25:42It's so specific. 137 aha. Yeah, it's expensive for a set
- 1:25:47of golf clubs. It's a lot, but do you know what
- 1:25:49that separates the average 25 handicap from being scratch, as
- 1:25:54I've discovered in everyone's purchases?
- 1:25:55Yeah, it's not. It's not there.
- 1:25:57No, it's not there for sure. And that's before when you think
- 1:26:00about getting a set of clubs, you'd then fitted, fitted, you'd
- 1:26:04have different shafts, maybe you had to change the club head
- 1:26:07angle, you'd change the grips, might have a thicker grip, a
- 1:26:10thinner grip. So it all in, it's probably like
- 1:26:122K for just 7 clubs. And then you need two more
- 1:26:16wedges probably you need a putter.
- 1:26:18You then need a driver, maybe a hybrid or yeah, it's a it's
- 1:26:23fancy spot. You know I was just not funny as
- 1:26:25well as you can look up a YouTube video right now that
- 1:26:29will be. Can this tour pro go under par
- 1:26:34with a set of Slazengers from sports?
- 1:26:36Right. And they do, yeah.
- 1:26:37Yeah. So like, realistically, it
- 1:26:39doesn't make that much, not much difference.
- 1:26:40So that's really. And we already mentioned Bryson
- 1:26:42Dechambeau. I'm actually a really big fan of
- 1:26:44his. His YouTube channel is really
- 1:26:45good. If you're not into golf but
- 1:26:47would maybe like to or want to just watch some golf, his
- 1:26:50channel is really good and he plays with another YouTuber
- 1:26:53called Grant Horvath. And Grant's like a really good
- 1:26:56amateur. But the difference between a
- 1:26:58high level like a college golfer and Bryson who's a tour Pro is,
- 1:27:02is amazing. And, and sometimes they'll do
- 1:27:03like ask ChatGPT what club should Bryson hit and he'll hit
- 1:27:07like a putter off the tee and still win the hole.
- 1:27:10Yeah, that's crazy. Yeah, OK, we've now got some
- 1:27:14jorts. No, Angus, these aren't any
- 1:27:17jorts. These are.
- 1:27:20These are cool to satisfy pace shell 5 inch shell piece shell
- 1:27:26is it yeah piece right that wrong.
- 1:27:28My research has has failed me suddenly these shell not running
- 1:27:315 inch fake denim shorts, so that's like a right you can.
- 1:27:35See the print right now? What I will say, 5 inch is the
- 1:27:39golden standard within men's shorts.
- 1:27:42I think I bought a set of OH. Sorry.
- 1:27:45So always dangerous to the camera roll.
- 1:27:48So. I think I bought a pair that's
- 1:27:50smaller that I might debut at threshold Friday, but I don't
- 1:27:54know if that's too. Short If that's not a reason for
- 1:27:57people to come down, maybe well, but they.
- 1:27:58Like slit right to the waistband as well.
- 1:28:00So there's going to do. These have a slit on the side.
- 1:28:03They do but not allow pie. I saw these.
- 1:28:06I don't often go shopping, but I went shopping the other day and
- 1:28:08I saw these in a shop and I thought they were so cool.
- 1:28:11So I'm going to go ahead and say purely based off what they are,
- 1:28:15they're still running shorts, everything like that.
- 1:28:17I'm going to match the exact price of the vest.
- 1:28:19Really. Yeah.
- 1:28:22Then therefore not understanding satisfies a brand as knowing
- 1:28:25brand. These are 220.
- 1:28:29Oh my. Do you know how small of a
- 1:28:32material that is? 220 lbs.
- 1:28:38Do you know I? Was really considering them for
- 1:28:41high rocks. That would be sick.
- 1:28:43Have you seen the guy True at Haynes?
- 1:28:45Yeah, he's actually running marathons in in jeans, but maybe
- 1:28:48they're just. Stress satisfy you could.
- 1:28:51There's a brand called Bourne Primitive, an American brand
- 1:28:55that's deeply embedded in CrossFit and they make like
- 1:28:58functional jorts, which is stretchy, which which aren't
- 1:29:02aren't cool, but kind of. Cool for yet.
- 1:29:05OK, I will not be buying those. All right, we've got one more.
- 1:29:07OK, here we go. These are the on cloud boom
- 1:29:10strikes. There's there's a special name
- 1:29:12for them. They're like the slip ONS.
- 1:29:15Awesome. Yeah, these are.
- 1:29:17A weird shoe. I believe these are a bit of APR
- 1:29:20stunt shoe never because they'll.
- 1:29:23Make the. Crazy videos of them being
- 1:29:24sprayed onto the foot like moulded which is really cool.
- 1:29:28Essentially they are a sock with a carbon plate on the bottom.
- 1:29:34I grind my gears. By the way, there are some
- 1:29:36Youtubers that have got on deals that are wearing carbon plates
- 1:29:38in all their shoes and they're just like walking around.
- 1:29:40KSI thrown it at the bloke but I.
- 1:29:43Saw come on crossing the road yesterday.
- 1:29:45Sorry, Alpha flies and he just was not going running no.
- 1:29:49OK, so these these are expensive, they're the forefront
- 1:29:54of technology. I reckon these are £380.99.
- 1:30:04He's he's, he's pretty good. It's they're 309.
- 1:30:07OK. I thought they'd actually have
- 1:30:09gone up in price because didn't know if they were still making
- 1:30:11those. Puts into perspective that pair
- 1:30:12of shorts. Yeah, like, you could get those
- 1:30:15shoes for basically the same price.
- 1:30:18Now what? These might actually help you go
- 1:30:20a bit quick. Well, I.
- 1:30:21Was playing, I was, I was going to ask the did you see the
- 1:30:24Adidas? I can't remember what they are.
- 1:30:27They're like the one use shoe. Yes, yeah, they're kind of like
- 1:30:31disintegrate across the race. I was going to ask you about
- 1:30:35those, the Adidas ones, they're like £500 or something, but I
- 1:30:37thought that was maybe well. If there's something for you and
- 1:30:39for the listeners to go and have a look at ASICS who just had two
- 1:30:43pairs of shoes approved by whoever runs the rules in
- 1:30:47running, and they look weird. Weird.
- 1:30:51So they must be doing. Some some of the carbon shoes
- 1:30:54like the the the top Puma ones, they look a bit funky.
- 1:30:57They've got like split sole and then like a pointy thing on the
- 1:31:02front. They look like a.
- 1:31:03A whale, I think. I think people are having a lot
- 1:31:06of fun at the moment making with crush shoes and and playing with
- 1:31:09the legality of it. Yeah.
- 1:31:11But yeah, well, I enjoyed that. Hayden Wilde, the triathlete,
- 1:31:15got called out for wearing a shoe that was illegal by
- 1:31:18accident. Or something like that, anyway.
- 1:31:20I don't know the details, but yeah, it's a wheel.
- 1:31:22I enjoyed that game. I might have to return that one
- 1:31:24back to you. If you guys enjoyed that, I will
- 1:31:26happily do that. Leave your suggestions if you
- 1:31:28want us to do other games or if you've got things that maybe
- 1:31:31Charles should guess the cost of, let us know in the comments
- 1:31:34down below. If you're not already
- 1:31:35subscribed, it would be massively appreciated.
- 1:31:38And then going into the back end of this year, which is quite
- 1:31:40weird to to say mentor going into the back end of this year.
- 1:31:43If you have ideas for what we can do going into the new year,
- 1:31:48then give us a shout on those. It's an opportunity for us to
- 1:31:51change some bits if we should. I'm enjoying it as it is, but
- 1:31:54I'm always open to new ideas. So yeah, it's been an absolute
- 1:31:59pleasure having you all join us for this episode again.
- 1:32:01Charles, Is there anything else? From you I've got no.
- 1:32:04Thing. OK, In which case, we look
- 1:32:05forward to seeing you all in the next episode.
