Latest / Mocktail Minutes / Can Protein Cause Weight Gain?
Transcript
- 0:21Hello, everyone.
- 0:22Welcome back to this week's episode of mocktail minutes.
- 0:25This is Bailey.
- 0:26I am doing a solo episode at this week.
- 0:29Brianna is out sick.
- 0:30So we're making, do we always adapt?
- 0:33We adjust.
- 0:33And we're going to talk about can protein cause weight gain today.
- 0:39Now, I guess before we get started, my mocktail that I'm doing this week is cure electrolytes.
- 0:45I am doing the lemonade flavor.
- 0:47I really like him and Josh was not a fan.
- 0:49So we had tried the ultimate pink lemonade.
- 0:51Big fan of that one tastes like the, I think it's the country time lemonade.
- 0:55So we tried this one.
- 0:57It was like the eliminate.
- 0:59I think it tastes more like a sweet lemon head rather than eliminate.
- 1:04I really like it.
- 1:05So I'm a fan cure, lemonade flavor.
- 1:08That's a good one for me.
- 1:09So.
- 1:11Let's jump into the topic of the day.
- 1:13I'm trying to keep this one short, sweet to the point, but basically can protein cause weight gain.
- 1:18Typically answer that we'd like to give it depends.
- 1:21Because as you may have picked up again, nutrition, isn't black and white, there is not one specific thing that will make you gain or lose weight.
- 1:30It's a multiple things that can come together.
- 1:33To give you the results.
- 1:35So when working on weight loss, because I took this question directly from a client I was working with, she was very hesitant to increase their protein.
- 1:45She's like, well, you know, like I've been told all this time, I need a decreased.
- 1:48I mean decreased, decreased, decreased.
- 1:51Why the heck are you telling me to increase?
- 1:54Won't the scale.
- 1:55Just go up.
- 1:56So first, when you were working on weight loss, I do encourage you to use other data with the scale, like measurements, court, and body scan.
- 2:04So.
- 2:05Well, I guess I don't necessarily encourage you to use the scale.
- 2:08I personally don't even have a scale.
- 2:10But I know so many of you have been used to using this as a measurement.
- 2:15So if you were someone who you kind of, you're able to just use this as data.
- 2:19Okay.
- 2:20If you're someone who has an emotional tie to the scale where it's like, Depending on what that number says is going to.
- 2:28Depend on how I feel, depending on my day, depending on what I eat.
- 2:32The, maybe we need a break.
- 2:33But use other.
- 2:36Information to let you know, okay.
- 2:37Where are we at in this progress?
- 2:39Use those measurements because it can tell us a different story.
- 2:42Like maybe the scale isn't moving too much, but you've lost three inches.
- 2:46Great.
- 2:46That can mean, okay, we're losing fat or building and maintaining muscle.
- 2:50Or like the InBody scan will give you insight to your muscle mass.
- 2:54Like, are we building muscle?
- 2:56Are we gaining fat?
- 2:57Are we losing fat?
- 2:58Are we losing muscle?
- 2:59Because we also don't want you to be.
- 3:02Losing muscle muscle is magic, basically.
- 3:06And when I'm working on weight loss, especially as a low calorie diet, we can see a 20% decline in that muscle mass.
- 3:13So while break, the weight has gone down on the scale.
- 3:16So has our muscle and our muscle, like I said, it's magic.
- 3:19It's kind of like a golden ticket to a long, healthy life.
- 3:24So we want to keep it on.
- 3:26Now the RDA.
- 3:27So RDA stands for recommended dietary allowances, and this is basically the levels of intake.
- 3:33Essential nutrients that on a basis of a scientific knowledge.
- 3:38They are judged by the food and nutrition board to be able to adequately.
- 3:43Meet the no nutrient needs.
- 3:45Of practically all healthy persons.
- 3:47I believe it's like 97%.
- 3:49So this is a Mount that they're saying, Hey, if you get this.
- 3:52You're, you're not going to be calm, deficient.
- 3:55So the RDA for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram.
- 4:00Now one kilogram equals 2.2 pounds.
- 4:03So, this is what is sufficient to meet your needs.
- 4:05Prevent deficiency.
- 4:07I however, recommend about 0.8 grams per pound, to be more optimal, to prevent age-related muscle, less muscle mass, to build that muscle, to increase your metabolism to fat burn because.
- 4:20You're increasing that muscle.
- 4:21Which is going to increase your metabolism, which increases the rate at which we burn calories or use energy in our body.
- 4:29And protein has a higher thermic effect of food.
- 4:32Then other macronutrients, like your carbs and fat.
- 4:35Would that being said it is estimated proteins TEF.
- 4:39The thermic effect of food is 20 to 30%.
- 4:42Carbs are like five to 10% and fat and zero to 3%.
- 4:46So this is what is estimated to be burned while metabolizing this foods.
- 4:51Or basically the amount of calories your body uses just to digest it.
- 4:56So what that means?
- 4:58Kind of to break it down a little bit further, a thermic effect of 30% of protein would mean that like, if you were to consume a hundred calories of protein, It ends up being only 70 usable calories.
- 5:11Every time we say calories too.
- 5:12I think we all kind of assume calories and just like associated with weight loss.
- 5:18But think of calories instead as just a measure of energy.
- 5:23It's.
- 5:24It's inner game.
- 5:24That's basically what it is.
- 5:25We're getting energy from fruit.
- 5:27We're also expelling this energy.
- 5:29So you need to be including protein in your diet to support this lean muscle mass and to take it to the next level you need to strength, train.
- 5:38With this, when I guess when this comes up with my clients, this is usually a later, they have not co coming in on the first or even like the four session maybe.
- 5:46I mean like, okay, let's start straying training.
- 5:48Like we're doing all these things now.
- 5:49But when we start string training, the question comes up about like pre post-workout nutrition because we hear all about it.
- 5:56If you're listening to us, the average person, general public, most of the people I work with timing of this protein is not important.
- 6:03I am more concerned about, are you eating enough throughout the day?
- 6:07And you're going to see results with that.
- 6:08You don't necessarily need a time it around.
- 6:11Your workouts.
- 6:13Other things for weight loss.
- 6:14I mean, Protein promotes satiety controls, hunger.
- 6:18And so it's going to prevent over 80 ans late as well.
- 6:22Wait is regulated by your brain and more specifically your hypothalamus.
- 6:28Your hypothalamus is a structure that's like deep inside your brain is like the size of an almond.
- 6:33I believe.
- 6:34And it's kind of like your control center.
- 6:36It likes to keep your body.
- 6:38Stable, which is called homeostasis.
- 6:40Your body doesn't like change.
- 6:42It likes to kind of keep, keep things going.
- 6:44So what's going to help me manage like your body temperature, your blood pressure, your hunger, your thirst.
- 6:50Your sex, drive your mood and even your sleep.
- 6:52It's trying to keep the body happy.
- 6:55And it does this by influencing your autonomic nervous system or managing your hormones.
- 7:01So a higher protein intake actually increases your levels of satiety hormones, like GLP one peptide YY.
- 7:09Connie while reducing your levels of your hunger hormone.
- 7:13Raelin.
- 7:14So it's increasing these hormones that are telling you, Hey, stop eating your full.
- 7:18And it's decreasing the hormone that is saying, Hey, you're hungry.
- 7:21Go eat more.
- 7:22Now, if you were to replace some carbs and fat in your diet with protein, you may experience less hunger and feel greater satiety.
- 7:31Because maybe you're overdoing it on these areas.
- 7:33We just need to adjust.
- 7:34What you're doing.
- 7:35And I work on this a lot with my clients and the metabolites make over.
- 7:39You kind of learn how to adjust your meals.
- 7:41So it's not driven.
- 7:44By like, cars are not driven by fat.
- 7:46Maybe we do just need to increase that protein.
- 7:48Or sometimes as he, we need to increase protein and increased fiber.
- 7:52Like those are the main things that I see.
- 7:54We often are lacking.
- 7:56So by modifying this, you will be regulating your hormones.
- 7:59Protein may reduce that hunger and help you feel fuller for longer.
- 8:03Meaning demand of eating fewer calories, not randomly snacking all day.
- 8:08And also maybe this may be more food than you are used to eating, but now you're getting nutrients or you're able to.
- 8:15Fuel your body with what it needs to function, but also to optimize how your body systems are performing.
- 8:23Really all this to say that protein can actually make you feel more satisfied.
- 8:28Then you would be eating the same amount of calories from carbs in that.
- 8:34Calories aren't equal and we have to look be honest.
- 8:36And I'm not saying you just go eat protein all day.
- 8:40We need all three of these.
- 8:41But.
- 8:43I think we need a little bit more protein than what a lot of us are consuming right now.
- 8:47We don't realize how much we do need or they go, yeah, we're getting that meeting two weeks.
- 8:51Every morning.
- 8:52Two weeks is only about 12 grams of protein.
- 8:56I'm talking, we need like at least 30 grams per meal.
- 9:00For me personally, I aim for like 110 grams of protein.
- 9:05For the day and I break that out into meals and then I do a snack.
- 9:09So you need more than two A's for breakfast.
- 9:12You need more than like three slices of Turkey.
- 9:15You need more than two chicken tenders?
- 9:18Probably.
- 9:19So I do sometimes have people that will kind of track protein.
- 9:25Just to kind of create that awareness since do you, where am I at right now?
- 9:29And that's, if you're like, oh crap, I am eating less than what I thought.
- 9:33So then we sh.
- 9:36Get strategic and figure out, okay, how are you going to increase this protein?
- 9:40Especially if we're working on weight loss, like this is going to help.
- 9:43Decrease that risk of weight regained because you're building the muscle and you're preventing that metabolic rate from dropping, which happens if we lose weight too quickly.
- 9:54Our ma our metabolism drops.
- 9:56And a lot of this is due to our muscle mass dropping.
- 10:00Because our muscle mass is really active tissue.
- 10:03If we're not eating enough.
- 10:05Our body's going to break that down because it wants to survive.
- 10:08It doesn't care about your nice looking bicep or building your butt.
- 10:12It cares about.
- 10:13Keeping it alive.
- 10:16So including this out throughout the day.
- 10:18And like I said, I do a hunt about 110 grams per day.
- 10:22I don't do like 10 grams at breakfast and like try and cram it all in at lunch and dinner type of thing.
- 10:28It really does help to spread protein out throughout the day.
- 10:32Number one, because it is super satiating.
- 10:34So you won't feel great trying to get like a hundred grands at a meal.
- 10:39Number two.
- 10:39You want to have those say tidy benefits all throughout the day.
- 10:43So spread it out kind of evenly throughout the day.
- 10:46It's okay.
- 10:47It's if it's not like, really even, but like don't knew zero and then like 50 and then like 20, like.
- 10:54Spread it out.
- 10:56And eat all kinds of protein, even red meat.
- 11:00Honestly out of sugars are probably more inflammatory than red meat.
- 11:03So eat the chicken, Turkey, lean beef cork salmon eggs.
- 11:08Yes.
- 11:08Eat the eggs.
- 11:09Dairy dairy is great to include, especially if you can tolerate it.
- 11:12So milk, cheese, yogurt.
- 11:14And then thinking about like whole fat versus fat bream.
- 11:18Honestly either works.
- 11:20And I get more into this with my clients, but basically like if you're doing a fat-free and eat some fat at that meal, you just add to it, like throwing some cheesy throw in some like walnuts or something.
- 11:30If you're going to have the whole fat dairy product, you might not need to add as much fat to that meal or snack.
- 11:35Other things that will have protein is going to be like your beans, chickpeas, lentils.
- 11:40Those I kind of classify more as a searcher card, but they're going to add to that protein.
- 11:45You can also use protein powder.
- 11:47When looking at these, I do like to use a quality protein powder, especially for, to use it quite often.
- 11:52I use protein powder almost every day.
- 11:54Cause I do smoothies.
- 11:55So drink wholesome is my go-to just ingredients is another great one.
- 12:00Designer a egg.
- 12:02Naked nutrition.
- 12:03Vital proteins.
- 12:05Be well by Kelly.
- 12:07Perfect supplements.
- 12:08And Shaklee.
- 12:10Those are all great brands to check out.
- 12:14Debbie for believers.
- 12:15Some of them are age based.
- 12:16Some of them are way based.
- 12:17I would either do like an egg or a whey based protein.
- 12:19Those are kind of my go-to recommendations.
- 12:22So really at the end of the day, there are several things with protein and simply increasing.
- 12:26This doesn't necessarily mean you're going to gain weight.
- 12:30We can overdo it on anything and see kind of like the quote unquote negative impact.
- 12:35We like to find everyone's sweet spot and I mean, other things that can cause weight gain.
- 12:40Puberty menopause, genetic factors for sleep.
- 12:43I mean, stress inflammation, gut imbalances, access to healthy foods.
- 12:48Certain medication, hormonal imbalances.
- 12:50So it all.
- 12:52Basically it could all add up.
- 12:54If there can be a triad of different things.
- 12:56And like what I would say, that's the nice and also the annoying bird of nutrition or the body in general.
- 13:02It's usually not just one thing.
- 13:04If you're bloated, it's not like I can be like, okay, if you're bloated, do this.
- 13:08There could be several reasons you're voting.
- 13:10Maybe you're just nodding enough or maybe you're skipping meals.
- 13:13Maybe you're gaining weight.
- 13:16Because you're not eating enough.
- 13:17Maybe you're gaining weight because your minerals.
- 13:21R off.
- 13:21So now your thyroid isn't functioning.
- 13:24Maybe your adrenal glands are like burnt out and you got a lot of inflammation going on.
- 13:30So many.
- 13:31Reasons can come up.
- 13:34For weight gain.
- 13:35So we have to explore all the different things.
- 13:38It's not going to be one thing.
- 13:39And you don't necessarily have to be afraid to increase protein while you were working on weight loss, protein, Suisse, jewelry.
- 13:45Super important.
- 13:46It's that golden ticket.
- 13:49It's going to build that muscle mass.
- 13:52Definitely included.
- 13:53Like I said about 0.8 grams.
- 13:55Per pound.
- 13:55If you are on a waitlist weight loss journey, I do address this a little bit for more of like an ideal body weight.
- 14:03But just going to be idea about 0.8 grams per pound.
- 14:06Hope this short sweet episode was helpful for you.
- 14:10And if you have any other topics you would like us to cover.
- 14:14If you have any questions that you would like us to expand on, feel free to DM either Brianna or I, and we will definitely make sure we do an episode on it.
