- 0:00Doing Marriage Well from May 21, 2026 Is the false consensus effect hurting
- 0:06your marriage? Three more biases.
- 0:08The Zanargic effect, negative biases, and the false consensus effort. Who names these things?
- 0:15The Zanargic effect is our tendency to remember uncompleted tasks better than completed ones.
- 0:20So you recall the times your spouse didn't finish something very clearly,
- 0:24but tend to forget the times they completed a task. This skews your internal count.
- 0:29Negativity bias is the tendency to focus on negative experiences more than positive ones.
- 0:34To some degree, this is human nature. But some of us tend to be negative in general.
- 0:39In marriage, this causes us to dwell on conflicts and problems rather than celebrating
- 0:43successes and good times together.
- 0:45The false consensus effect is overestimating how much others share your opinions and beliefs.
- 0:51This can lead to assuming your spouse feels as you do about something and then
- 0:55being upset when you discover they do not.
- 0:57This bias can also lead to mind reading, miscommunications, and frustrations
- 1:01when spouses assume their partner shares their perspective, only to discover that they do not.
- 1:06A bias can play out as assuming our friends agree with us about something we
- 1:10disagree with our spouse about.
- 1:12We think everyone agrees with us,
- 1:14making us less willing to attempt to understand what our spouse thinks.
- 1:17There are plenty of other biases that can mess with how we see our spouse.
- 1:21The best way to avoid all of them is to keep asking yourself if you might have
- 1:25misunderstood or made a wrong assumption.
- 1:27Question what you think, then seek clarification from your spouse.
- 1:31This is Paul reminding you that doing marriage well looks different for every couple.
- 1:35And my wife does not agree with me on the correct way to hang the toilet paper.
- 1:40And when Lori edited this, she added a note that she is right about it.
