- 0:00Have you ever ended the day feeling like you worked hard but somehow still
- 0:05felt like you failed? The laundry isn't finished, dinner wasn't what
- 0:09you planned, you missed your workout, or your inbox is just overflowing and
- 0:13you still haven't returned that one text. What if the problem isn't that you're
- 0:17falling behind? What if you're just trying to keep every burner on high?
- 0:23If you're tired of people pleasing, caring too much,
- 0:27and wondering why peace still feels so hard to hold on to,
- 0:31you're in the right place. Hi, I'm Lori, mom, former people
- 0:35pleaser, and your boundaries coach. Here we talk
- 0:39about how to protect your peace, set healthier boundaries, and get clear
- 0:43on what actually matters so that you can build a life that feels lighter,
- 0:47calmer, and more satisfying. So let's stop the chaos
- 0:51for a minute, moms, catch our breath, and get into this next episode.
- 0:59Hey friend, welcome back to Healthy Boundaries for Moms. I am your host,
- 1:03Lori Grimes, and over the last few episodes we've been talking about the hidden
- 1:06cost of always being available. We've also been learning
- 1:10how to take the next right step instead of waiting for that
- 1:14perfect plan and being willing to renegotiate
- 1:19when life changes. So make those changes that we need to so
- 1:23that we can keep moving on. And today I want to share a simple picture
- 1:27that I think ties all those ideas together, and it's called the 4-burner
- 1:31theory. So imagine your life is like a stove,
- 1:34okay, and it's got 4 burners. And the original illustration
- 1:38uses 4 areas of life, but as I thought about
- 1:42it, it kind of reminded me of something I've shared with you before.
- 1:46So we have our 4 pillars here at Healthy Boundaries for Moms,
- 1:50and our pillars here are boundaries,
- 1:52organization, relationships, and time management.
- 1:56And I don't really change those pillars around. They're part of the foundation
- 2:01of a healthy life. But just because they're always
- 2:04important doesn't mean that I need the same amount
- 2:09of attention every day or in every season.
- 2:13So that's where the burners come in, okay? Some seasons
- 2:17require one burner to be on high while
- 2:21another moves to maybe medium or even low.
- 2:25And it's not because it's not important, but because we're human,
- 2:29guys. We are human. So in Ecclesiastes
- 2:333:1, it says, there is a time for everything and a
- 2:37season for every activity under the heavens. God never
- 2:41designed every season to look the same, and I'm so grateful that
- 2:45he hasn't, because I honestly love each season. And I
- 2:49love when it changes to the new season because it's fresh.
- 2:52And it's— some seasons are for planting while we
- 2:56harvest in other seasons. Some of our seasons are for
- 3:00building, right? And some of our seasons are for resting. So wisdom
- 3:05is recognizing which season you're in instead of expecting
- 3:09yourself to live every single season
- 3:13the same way. So a lot of our stress comes from fighting the season
- 3:17we're actually in, right? We're, we're gritting our teeth,
- 3:20we're holding on tight, we're grasping, we're holding on, and we keep
- 3:25measuring ourselves by what we were able to do last month
- 3:28or last year before the kids were home or before
- 3:31whatever new season that we find ourselves in. We think,
- 3:35I should be able to keep up, but maybe the question isn't,
- 3:38how do I keep doing everything exactly the same No,
- 3:42maybe the better question is, what needs to change so
- 3:46that I can remain faithful without running myself
- 3:50into the ground, right? So sometimes one area of our
- 3:54life simply just needs more attention. Maybe you're caring for a sick family
- 3:58member, or maybe you've started a new job, or your child is
- 4:02struggling, or maybe just your marriage needs some extra attention right now,
- 4:06or your health just needs to be a priority for a season. And when a
- 4:09burner is on high, It means that that area
- 4:12just needs more of your time and attention or some emotional
- 4:17energy right now. But high doesn't mean it's more valuable,
- 4:21and it doesn't mean that every area should control your
- 4:25whole life. No. And it definitely doesn't mean that it's going to stay on high
- 4:30forever. It just means that in this season, it just needs more
- 4:34from you. So I think a lot of us struggle with
- 4:38the idea of keeping something on medium. Right?
- 4:41We're like black or white thinking. We've convinced ourselves that if we're
- 4:45not giving that 100%, we're somehow failing,
- 4:48right? But medium is often where healthy,
- 4:51sustainable living actually happens. Maybe your workout is
- 4:5530 minutes instead of an hour. I shared that on the last podcast.
- 4:58That's what happened to me, and I still got my workout in, and it wasn't
- 5:02the end of the world. Maybe dinner is simple instead of homemade from
- 5:06scratch. You know, maybe you're just throwing something into the oven that was frozen.
- 5:10Or we're just gonna do a pizza night. Just make it simple.
- 5:13Maybe our house is clean enough instead of having this Pinteresty
- 5:17perfect magazine-ready house, right? Maybe your
- 5:21business is just growing one faithful step at a time
- 5:25instead of running at full speed. And maybe you don't
- 5:29complete the entire list that you've made, but you finish a
- 5:33few things that really matter to you. That's not settling. Okay guys,
- 5:37that's sustainability. Medium says I'm still
- 5:40showing up, but I'm adjusting the intensity here. It allows
- 5:45us to remain consistent with, again, not demanding
- 5:48this perfection that we want to do all the time.
- 5:52Okay, so let's talk about the low setting, because this
- 5:55is where I think a lot of moms get caught up in that guilt.
- 5:59Because low doesn't mean that you're quitting, guys.
- 6:02It doesn't mean that you've even stopped caring. It just means that you're intentionally
- 6:07maintaining something while another area needs
- 6:11more attention. So a low burner may mean that for now you're
- 6:15just doing the minimum needed to keep something healthy and moving
- 6:18forward. You haven't abandoned it. You've just simply adjusted
- 6:23your expectations. And that can be one of the most healthiest
- 6:27boundaries we could create, not just with other people,
- 6:31but with ourselves. So a while back, I had to do
- 6:35this in my own life. Originally, I had planned to do this workout whenever
- 6:39my son and his friends were gonna go to the gym, and for a while
- 6:42it worked. I shared this on one of the last podcasts, and their schedules
- 6:46just became crazy, like unpredictable. Sometimes they
- 6:50were going, sometimes they were staying, and it really cost
- 6:54me my time in the gym, and I wasn't taking care of my own health
- 6:58at that point. So I renegotiated it. Instead of trying
- 7:02to force the original plan and just sticking hard to
- 7:06that plan, I started going to the gym in the mornings and again taking my
- 7:09walks before the day got busy. I prioritized them,
- 7:13and the value didn't change, just my strategy did.
- 7:18And I've had to do the same things even with this podcast. So with my
- 7:22kids at home for the summer, my normal recording schedule has just not
- 7:26always been the way it was prior to summer. And I've had
- 7:30to be realistic. I've had to adjust my expectations about
- 7:34when I record and when the episodes are gonna be edited and
- 7:38exactly when I'm able to publish them. But some of these episodes
- 7:41have come out later in the day. Like, I'm recording late
- 7:45on this Monday and they're still getting out.
- 7:48And a few years ago, I probably would've stressed myself out
- 7:52over that and I would've felt guilty or bad that I didn't do it when
- 7:56I was doing it before, and I would have focused on the fact that the
- 7:59episode wasn't published at this exact right originally
- 8:03planned time. I might have told myself something like
- 8:06I was behind or I'm just not consistent
- 8:10enough, but now I'm reminding myself of what is actually most important,
- 8:14which is I'm still showing up, I'm still recording, I'm still
- 8:18getting these episodes out on Mondays and Wednesdays. The expectation
- 8:21has changed But the commitment, guys, it didn't change.
- 8:26And that, that is the difference between renegotiating
- 8:30and just giving up. Okay. I didn't stop caring about the podcast
- 8:35and I didn't abandon the commitment I made to my listeners. I just
- 8:39adjusted the process so it would work within the season
- 8:43that my family and I were actually living in real life. And I
- 8:47think that's a lesson many of us just need to hear. Healthy boundaries
- 8:51are not always about lowering our standards.
- 8:54Sometimes they're just making our expectations realistic
- 8:59so that we can remain faithful instead of burning ourselves
- 9:03out just trying to be perfect all the time. This is how the 4 burners
- 9:06can work with the 4 pillars we talked about here.
- 9:09So the pillars are what support your life: boundaries,
- 9:13organization, relationship, and time management.
- 9:17The pillars are not going to just disappear when life gets
- 9:21busy, right? But the amount of energy you give to each one may change.
- 9:25One week your relationships may need to be on high because your child
- 9:29needs more support right now, or organization may need
- 9:33to stay on medium. You're keeping the household running, but you're not reorganizing
- 9:37every closet. Or a work or personal project
- 9:40may need to remain on low, right? You're keeping it alive,
- 9:43but you aren't pushing for rapid growth. And your boundaries
- 9:48may need to be turned up because protecting your time and energy is what is
- 9:52allowing everything else to function. So the goal is
- 9:57not to keep every burner on high.
- 10:01The goal is just to choose the heat intentionally for
- 10:05each of those burners. So it can help to define
- 10:09these levels before the week begins. Like high will mean the area that you're
- 10:12going to be most focused with most attention and your
- 10:16best, best energy. And medium is going to be where you're staying
- 10:20consistent consistent, but you're simplifying the expectations.
- 10:24Again, low is going to be just maintaining that area. It's going
- 10:28to be minimum effective effort until that season changes.
- 10:33So the problem comes when we don't choose intentionally,
- 10:36right? We just let every request through, every interruption,
- 10:41every unexpected change to turn another burner
- 10:44up, right? The world loves to do that to us. But before
- 10:49long, everything's boiling over, right? We've got 400, uh, things going on
- 10:53and the, the pot's boiling over.
- 10:57And that's why healthy boundaries require us to stop
- 11:02and ask, what really needs my attention right now? What can
- 11:05be simplified here and what can wait?
- 11:09And what expectation needs to be
- 11:12renegotiated? Sometimes, guys,
- 11:16we stay committed to the original plan simply
- 11:20because we feel guilty changing it because we said
- 11:24we would do it this way on this day and on and at this
- 11:28time, but then circumstances changed. Your energy
- 11:32changed or your family's needs are changing and the
- 11:36season changed, but renegotiating does not mean you
- 11:40were wrong to make the original plan. No, we need to make our plans.
- 11:43We don't always know how
- 11:47things are going to change. It just means that
- 11:51you are wise enough to recognize that the plan needs to
- 11:54support your life and not, not control
- 11:58it. Okay, you can keep the value while
- 12:01changing the strategy, or you can keep the commitment while
- 12:06changing the expectation. You can remain faithful without forcing
- 12:10yourself to perform at that same level
- 12:14in every season. So these are the questions I want you to think
- 12:18about this week and ask yourself: Which pillar needs to
- 12:22be on high right now? Which one could we move to medium with
- 12:27simpler expectations? How can I simplify it?
- 12:30Which one simply needs to be maintained on low for the season,
- 12:34you know, like on the back burner? What commitment still
- 12:38matters to me? And what part of the expectation
- 12:41or process can be renegotiated?
- 12:45And finally, ask yourself, what expectation am I carrying
- 12:49that God never actually asked me to
- 12:53carry? This question I put a lot here on this podcast because I think it's
- 12:58constantly a question I ask myself, and it helps me to check what
- 13:02I'm carrying. So maybe you're demanding that you do everything
- 13:06perfect Maybe you're measuring consistency by the exact
- 13:10time something gets completed instead of whether you remained
- 13:13faithful. Give yourself credit for remaining faithful.
- 13:17Maybe you're expecting yourself to perform like
- 13:21you're in a completely different season of life.
- 13:25You are allowed, my friend, to adjust that heat.
- 13:28So healthy boundaries aren't only about
- 13:32saying no to other people. Sometimes they're about saying no
- 13:36to these impossible expectations you
- 13:40place on yourself. Your pillars don't need to change, your values don't
- 13:44need to change, but your strategy can. And the expectation can
- 13:49change while the commitment is still remaining. That's not a failure,
- 13:52guys, that's wisdom. So this week, instead of trying to
- 13:56keep every burner turned up all the way, give yourself permission to
- 14:01decide what needs to be on high, what can remain on medium,
- 14:04and what can safely stay on this low
- 14:08back burner for now. Because when we stop chasing perfection and start
- 14:12living with intention, we are making room
- 14:16for more peace and more purpose and more freedom.
