- 0:05Hello and welcome back to another.
- 0:07Episode of Mindset. Podcast.
- 0:09Those of you that are watching on YouTube might notice that we
- 0:12are going back down memory lane. I know where it all began.
- 0:15Yeah, so this is the original Mindset podcast studio that we
- 0:19are in today. A few reasons behind it, mostly
- 0:22because we're very busy and I had the kit here, so Charles
- 0:24decided to come down here and do it in.
- 0:27Yeah, the old small space. Michael, I like it.
- 0:31Yeah, I mean, it's quite cozy. It.
- 0:33Is cozy. Yeah.
- 0:34A year ago Charles was a guest. This was the seat that he was in
- 0:37beforehand. Now he's Co hosting and we're
- 0:40going to do a slightly different episode.
- 0:42I must admit, it has been a while.
- 0:44It feels like it's been a very long time since we recorded an
- 0:46episode. Thank you guys for holding on
- 0:48and bearing with us. Part of that reason is because
- 0:51we've been quite active ourselves and that is something
- 0:54we will talk about. But how are you doing
- 0:57physically, Emotionally. Yeah, I'm feeling good.
- 1:02I think we'll we'll probably dig into that a little bit later on.
- 1:04But emotionally 90% cool, which is which is pretty.
- 1:10We can take, we can take. Yeah, I'm thinking though, you
- 1:12sound way more positive. Yeah, I know.
- 1:14We're, we're coming off the back of Cardiff High Works weekend
- 1:17which we both raced at and we spent the weekend up there so we
- 1:22have been tired. But Charles, you've also done
- 1:24Hackney Half. Yeah, if it wasn't obvious from
- 1:26your Instagram. I knew that was going to come up
- 1:28for sure. That's going to come up.
- 1:30So yeah, do you want to let everyone know how that was?
- 1:32And and me, I haven't really asked you about it because I
- 1:34wanted to save it till now. Yeah, I'm, I'm very pleased that
- 1:38when people are asking me about hacking half, my response is I
- 1:41just honestly had the best time ever and loved it.
- 1:44It was my first half marathon, first half marathon experience.
- 1:48And yeah, it wasn't the most ideal prep block.
- 1:52I had like a really solid 8 weeks of training and I've given
- 1:55myself 12 weeks. And then at the eight week mark
- 1:59I did something stupid and as a result hurt my back.
- 2:02And then I didn't run basically for three weeks.
- 2:04So the idea was off the back of 12 weeks.
- 2:08Could I break 90 minutes? What pace is that?
- 2:12It was like around 4:15 probably.
- 2:17Yeah, to literally just scrape under 90 minutes.
- 2:20I actually ran a little bit faster.
- 2:23But yeah, I was, I was very pleased off the back of not
- 2:25having like the perfect prep to still have the speed and the
- 2:29endurance. And honestly, like my longest
- 2:31run in the training block was 14K.
- 2:33So I've left like 7K in the dark.
- 2:35And I didn't know how that was going to feel.
- 2:37And luckily I had a friend who kind of like paced me through
- 2:43the first maybe 10 KS or like kept the reins on me really, so
- 2:48I didn't go out too hot. And actually he, he forced me to
- 2:50run a little bit faster at the start than I really wanted to.
- 2:53But if he hadn't done that, I definitely wouldn't broke in
- 2:56mighty minutes. And so he kind of pushed me
- 2:58along. And then I just felt great.
- 3:00The atmosphere, the crowds, you know, the stars that basically
- 3:04aligned and, and everything came together.
- 3:06And I'd had like a really good tape week and my nutrition was
- 3:10on point. And as a result I ran really
- 3:11well and I think if I'd had a proper block and I'd done a
- 3:14little bit more running pre the block as well, I can go even
- 3:18faster. So that was like a really big
- 3:19confidence boost for me. But yeah, it was just like all
- 3:21round a really good time and a great event.
- 3:23And as a result, I've already signed up for next year.
- 3:25Oh, you have. I was going to say you're going
- 3:26to do another or are you going to up it to a full?
- 3:29I think I would like to continue this training block and maybe
- 3:33push towards doing a full of the back end of this year.
- 3:37It's given me confidence that maybe 3 hours is on the cards.
- 3:41Sorry, but it would be like a real tough day out to run to run
- 3:45sub three. But I like the idea of having
- 3:47the summer to do all the training because the weather
- 3:49will be good and then maybe racing in the back end of this
- 3:52year. I've got everything crossed,
- 3:54fingers and toes crossed that I get ballot place for London next
- 3:57year. But I'll, I'll this should be on
- 4:00my ground, my gears. I've entered the ballot
- 4:02literally every year since 2014. Never, 2014.
- 4:07Never. That's quite That's more than
- 4:0910. That's what, 11 years now?
- 4:11I'm born bred Londoner and I can't run my whole marathon
- 4:14because of a valid place, you know?
- 4:16So I'm like seeing witnessing London this year was like
- 4:20amazing. So it was even more busy than
- 4:23Hackney half, which was mental because Hackney half was like
- 4:26people deep the whole the whole way around.
- 4:29Not that I noticed any. I don't get, I don't get too
- 4:31deep in it into this, but this is something that has been
- 4:34coming up in conversations with people.
- 4:36Are they overselling marathon tickets now?
- 4:39Because I know people were complaining about how busy it
- 4:41was, maybe throughout the course.
- 4:43And when you think people dodge, it is, yeah.
- 4:45Yeah, yeah. It was definitely for, I mean, I
- 4:47can't comment on marathons, but for Hackney, like the first
- 4:51maybe one 1 1/2 K was like, it was pretty tough, tough to
- 4:54people dodge and then it obviously gets strung out.
- 4:57And if you're a little bit faster and towards the front of
- 4:59the pack, then I guess it's a bit easier.
- 5:02But yeah, I don't know, maybe, but it's, it's like the the
- 5:05people that I'm talking to now who've done Hackney for years,
- 5:09some of these people are saying, oh, I just bought my Hackney
- 5:11ticket like a couple weeks before or I could go on the
- 5:14website and that was still availability because not, not
- 5:16all the tickets have been sold. And now it goes and like I think
- 5:19the first wave of tickets sold out for next year in 14 minutes,
- 5:22which is literally mental, isn't it?
- 5:24It's actually. Like Glastonbury?
- 5:25Well, no. It's like a.
- 5:27Yeah, yeah, yeah, initially that's that's another hot topic.
- 5:30So, yeah, I'm sure like that's the new thing.
- 5:32People just want to run races and the the events that are
- 5:34around us and A and a popular are the ones that everyone wants
- 5:38to run, unfortunately. So it's harder to get tickets
- 5:40for. But I mean in in like overall
- 5:43it's a good thing, right? People are are wanting to race
- 5:45and run and it's just frustrating when you can't get
- 5:48tickets. Well, if you don't get into the
- 5:50ballot for London next year, I believe this year Manchester
- 5:53Marathon was actually on the exact same day.
- 5:55Yeah, it was, yeah. I don't know if they'll do the.
- 5:57Same weekend, I think. I don't know if we got this
- 5:59wrong, but I think there's another Manchester at the end of
- 6:02this year in like. October.
- 6:04So like if I could get a spot for that across the summer,
- 6:07that's the perfect amount of time to train for that.
- 6:11If not, there's others in the back end of the year, but
- 6:13ideally I do a popular one because I feel like I perform
- 6:16better in front of a crowd. If I'm running around, I don't
- 6:19know, the arse end of nowhere and there's no one supporting
- 6:21me, I'll probably just sit by the side of the road and have a
- 6:23little cry. So.
- 6:25So like Nathan who I was running with, you said every time we
- 6:28went past a big group of people cheering, you speed up.
- 6:31You can see that on my you have to have to.
- 6:33Yeah, yeah. I can be testament to that as
- 6:36well. Every high rocks that I've done,
- 6:39the corner of the lap where I know people are, yeah, that pace
- 6:42is going up. Close your mouth, look composed.
- 6:44Yeah, yeah. Nasal breathe.
- 6:47How was Smile Along? How was your Saturday morning?
- 6:50You raced in Cardiff, wasn't it? Yeah, I think I put like
- 6:54unnecessary amount of pressure on myself.
- 6:56Can I, can I stop you on that? So for those that haven't
- 7:00married Charles or those that don't know him well, I have
- 7:05dealt with nerves myself. I used to get quite nervous as a
- 7:08kid. I used to know people that got
- 7:09very, very nervous. I've never met anyone that gets
- 7:11pre race anxiety like Charles. It is.
- 7:13And I, I genuinely like, as much as I'm laughing at it, it
- 7:17concerns me quite a lot. Yeah.
- 7:19I'm sure it's like detrimental to my performance.
- 7:21Oh, so detrimental. And for someone who's like
- 7:24pretty average, a high. Approx Not not no for someone
- 7:27that has competed as much as you have in various.
- 7:30Things yeah, the nerves are yeah, I, I think it's because I
- 7:34did a lot of competing when I was younger and then I've had a
- 7:36long time off but lots of things in my head I, I feel like
- 7:40there's there's lots of unnecessary pressure that I put
- 7:42on myself and maybe it's something I should address and
- 7:45and become better at but yeah, I mean, in my head I'd come off
- 7:50the back of Hackney half and my running has improved
- 7:55significantly since the last time I'd race the high rocks.
- 7:57So in my head already my running switch should be a little bit
- 8:01faster. I'm definitely going to run the
- 8:03right amount of laps this. Time this was a this was quite
- 8:06it was obviously going to be the joke yes Cardiff did their bit
- 8:10in making it as complicated as was my God so for those that are
- 8:13aware in high rocks you have to run the 1 kilometer between but
- 8:17one kilometer doesn't necessarily mean one lap and the
- 8:21other thing is that the running amount that you do between each
- 8:24station isn't necessarily always the same so the first the last
- 8:27or independently might be longer might be shorter and then the
- 8:31ones in the middle are usually the same distance for Cardiff.
- 8:35The way that they do it is they tell you the number of times you
- 8:37see the in gate before you run through it.
- 8:40And in Cardiff it was the 4th time, which means that you're
- 8:44mentally kind of running 4 laps, but you're not.
- 8:46You're running like 3 1/2 for the first ones and then for the
- 8:49middle laps you're running 3.1 laps.
- 8:51And what that means is that because you run out of the out
- 8:55when you leave your station, you immediately pass the end for the
- 8:58first time, and that counts as #1 and then you come in three
- 9:00times later, which is 4. But that's a demoralizing number
- 9:03of times you have to run in this circle.
- 9:05I hope that people listening to this who maybe not experienced
- 9:08that can appreciate how confusing that is and then
- 9:12sympathize with me when I ran an extra lap in my first ever high
- 9:15rocks. You're going, oh, that guy must
- 9:17be an idiot. He ran extra, but actually when
- 9:19he at face value that's confusing.
- 9:21It is confusing. The one thing that I will say
- 9:22that is still quite funny about what you did in Stockholm the
- 9:24first time was in your very first race, when you tell people
- 9:27not to go out too hot, you try to be first in the ski and it
- 9:29burns you hard. Yeah, and I ran an extra lap.
- 9:32And you ran an extra lap. Well, so like rewinds then me
- 9:35going into Cardiff, I've got much better running in my legs.
- 9:40I will run the right amount of laps and even with those two
- 9:43factors combined, I will go faster.
- 9:46But I think again, tied into the fact that I didn't have a good
- 9:5012 week Acme prep, I hurt my back for whatever reason.
- 9:54I wasn't doing as much station work around that.
- 9:56So the compromise or the running interference, I didn't really
- 10:01have that exposure. I wasn't doing as much upper
- 10:03body pulling. So I suffered on the sled pull.
- 10:05I had a meltdown at the freaking Burpee broad jumps, a real melt
- 10:10meltdown at the warbles. But I just didn't have that
- 10:13volume in my body. So all of those factors combined
- 10:16meant that I actually ran 10 seconds slower per kilometer in
- 10:20Cardiff than in Stockholm. And as a result, I just went
- 10:24slower overall. And I'd kind of this is
- 10:26something that it's almost like embarrassing to me and something
- 10:29that I've never really done before experienced.
- 10:31But I got to the war balls and I saw it wasn't on and I basically
- 10:34just quit. And there's like some other
- 10:37things that I think probably like contributed to that as
- 10:39well, But I've never had that before.
- 10:41And it's like you see my body language and something I'm not
- 10:45proud of and something I'd never preach to my own clients, but my
- 10:48body language, I just looked like I was over it.
- 10:50I didn't want to be there. I even walked over the finish
- 10:52line. I guess it's embarrassing
- 10:54looking back at now and I wish I'd and held myself to a better
- 10:57standard. But once you get into that like
- 10:59slippery mindset, I just like giving up and I just didn't want
- 11:02to be there anymore. But I've can take a lot away
- 11:05from that race and I think in theory I should be fitter.
- 11:10I just need to string together a better block and, and we'll go
- 11:12again in September when I'm going to be racing in Rome and
- 11:17hopefully that will be like a proper redemption and I'm like
- 11:20truly going to work hard on mindset to go into that race and
- 11:23just enjoy it and like take it in a little more.
- 11:25Can you, as much as you've circled this is like a
- 11:27redemption, Can you actually not care about it?
- 11:29Because yeah. Exactly.
- 11:30One thing that people I have discovered when it comes to high
- 11:34rocks, we put so much pressure. Well, people put pressure on
- 11:36themselves to achieve their personal best every single time
- 11:38and it doesn't happen. No, but also.
- 11:40And we've spoken about that before.
- 11:42Yeah. And the one big issue with High
- 11:44Rocks is the standardization of the courses.
- 11:47And that's always going to be an issue as long as they're in
- 11:50different venues and that there are potential things that could
- 11:52be done about it. But for the most part,
- 11:54especially when it's a new venue, you're going to expect
- 11:56that there's a trial on what the course is going to be like.
- 11:58And this course was very different in the the rock zone,
- 12:01which is where all the stations are inside, the running was
- 12:03quite small because there wasn't really any spectator access.
- 12:07However, because it was small, the run course was in effect
- 12:12shorter, which is why it has to do more laps.
- 12:14And across 25 laps, which is what it ended up being for the
- 12:17whole race, there were four corners per lap.
- 12:19You're doing a hundred corners. That does slow you down,
- 12:22especially when you understand that even though people
- 12:25shouldn't necessarily be in the inside bit, which is where the
- 12:28faster runners go, if there's a corner, people don't want to run
- 12:31the long way around the corner. There is going to be a bit of
- 12:33traffic there. And that when we talk about
- 12:36people dodging in sort of marathon sense, you're also
- 12:38doing people dodging on a course and that is going to slow you
- 12:41down so. And they're also like, because
- 12:44there was less, there was less space.
- 12:46The run track was narrow as well.
- 12:47It was just like it was congested.
- 12:49So I think comparing run times across races is really
- 12:52difficult, and that's why I think I've spoken to you before.
- 12:54I compare run plus Rock's own time because that ends up being
- 12:57quite consistent. That's just really hard to work
- 13:00out and take a lot of practice as you're racing.
- 13:03Something that I can still sort of gauge now that I've done, I
- 13:07actually worked out the other day, I've done 10 races this
- 13:10season, which is or 9 or 10 races this season, which is
- 13:14crazy. Last year I've done 2.
- 13:17But the things that you learn from each race and it's that
- 13:19race experience that's building up.
- 13:21I think that was your second solo solo race.
- 13:27And it's no wonder given that that you had, I mean, by the
- 13:30end, you would have been aware of what time you're on.
- 13:32If you were aware that you're not going to get your PB, then I
- 13:36can completely get why you'd be like oh whatever, because it's
- 13:38also. Again, it's like, why am I
- 13:40comparing courses? Because like there's yeah, I
- 13:44shouldn't, I shouldn't have just thrown in the towel like the
- 13:47wool balls and just got through it.
- 13:49I should have like, really pushed to do my best on the day.
- 13:53But she was like, now that that school will always have an
- 13:56asterisk next to it. And for me, in my head, maybe
- 13:59that was just an excuse that I could tell people I went slow
- 14:01because I, like, gave up on the wool balls.
- 14:02Like I didn't do the wool wars properly.
- 14:05But yeah, I mean, it's it's it's not good.
- 14:06And like, the way you handle yourself across the finish line,
- 14:10how you finish says a lot about you.
- 14:11And I wouldn't necessarily characterize myself as someone
- 14:14who would give up easily, but just on the day shit happens.
- 14:17And it is. It is what it is.
- 14:18So this is something that I think we both and probably most
- 14:23of the people listening fall victim to quite a lot is with
- 14:25the the sort of realization of this hybrid athlete slash just
- 14:31generally fit person that can run or be slightly aerobic and
- 14:34also lift some weight. It has borne a bit of an issue
- 14:40in the competition calendar in that most of the people that I
- 14:44know that do high rocks or run but also train, they are they
- 14:48don't do one event throughout their year.
- 14:51They're doing quite a lot. And in your case, you've just
- 14:53done Hackney Heart. It's a very different sort of
- 14:55training than a high rocks race, but there's still only two weeks
- 14:58between them. And also, theoretically you
- 15:02should have done London high Rocks with Hugh a week before
- 15:05Hackney. And like stacking all of that,
- 15:09it, it messes with your central nervous system so much.
- 15:13It messes with your training so much.
- 15:14It's going to mess with you mentally so much that like
- 15:17that's something we don't really factor into and it's, and it is
- 15:20quite stupid. Oh.
- 15:21Yeah, that that like race calendar planning was not good
- 15:24on my behalf. And like, actually it's probably
- 15:26a blessing in disguise. I didn't race with Hugh in
- 15:28London because as a result, my hacking time was what I wanted
- 15:32it to be. And like, that's the thing I'm
- 15:34going to have to take away from me is like I ran a really good
- 15:37half marathon rather than I ran a really poor Cardiff Hyrox in
- 15:43my head anyway. But yeah, I was like, I wasn't
- 15:47going to mention this, but it's like, if I can have an excuse
- 15:49this, I'm going to get it out. So funny story, at the at the
- 15:54end of of Hyrox in Cardiff, I kind of felt some weird pain in
- 15:58my stomach and I was like, oh, I've given myself a hernia.
- 16:01I must have worked really hard for that.
- 16:03Probably on his 3rd pool or something.
- 16:04So I went to the doctors and they're like you definitely
- 16:06don't have a hernia, but they were like concerned that I now
- 16:09have appendicitis. So if I raced Kairos Cardiff
- 16:13with appendicitis, then that's a pretty good excuse I think.
- 16:15Fingers crossed I don't have appendicitis.
- 16:17Yeah, we'll get the blood test results and next, next one,
- 16:20you'll either see me or you won't.
- 16:23Well, I mean, that's yeah, that's kind of what I was
- 16:26alluding to. And then on my side of what
- 16:28happened at the weekend, there's more stupidity.
- 16:31I'm going to try and keep this short, but I kind of want to
- 16:33tell you the the events of the race.
- 16:34Basically those are the. We're not particularly good
- 16:36role. Models we aren't, but we're
- 16:38we're doing trial by fire so the the lovely listeners don't have
- 16:41to make our mistakes. So bear in mind, as I just said,
- 16:45I've done quite a few races this season and especially at the
- 16:49beginning of the season, I said I wasn't actually bothered about
- 16:52qualifying for world champions this year, especially because it
- 16:54was in Chicago and I was like, that sounds expensive.
- 16:57So I would like to get as much race experience by doing every
- 17:00format of race if I could this season, which I've actually now
- 17:04done so. That's crazy as a as a.
- 17:06Male, you can do the open solo, open double s, pro solo pro
- 17:13double s. You can do a mixed relay and a
- 17:16men's relay. Is there anything else?
- 17:20I think so. I've done, I've done all of
- 17:22those and I've done multiple of some of them, which is great and
- 17:25has been really good for race experience.
- 17:27As I was saying, the problem is that quite a lot of those have
- 17:29been towards the back end of the season and training wise between
- 17:34I've felt like I've been playing catch up.
- 17:35I haven't really had a chance to do like a race block.
- 17:38Plus with small illnesses and stuff, I wasn't really allowing
- 17:43for those to affect the training.
- 17:44So I just kind of carried on and I think one of the things that I
- 17:47am proud of is that mentally I can dig quite deep.
- 17:52One of the bad things about that is I can often dig deeper than
- 17:54the body physically has. So which not many people can say
- 17:59that they can do. Exactly which is which is what
- 18:01I'm I'm one of those things I'm proud of.
- 18:02I I think I can outperform my physical capabilities, but at
- 18:06what cost? And we kind of found out what
- 18:08that was on Saturday. So again, for those that.
- 18:10Don't know that I'm championing this, no.
- 18:12No no no, for those that don't know, I am a videographer as
- 18:17well, so I film all weekend at High Rocks races.
- 18:19Which again isn't the perfect prep before you do a race is you
- 18:23definitely don't want to be doing 30,000 steps a day
- 18:25beforehand. But it does mean that I'm very
- 18:28aware of the course and we're as fast and we're as slow.
- 18:31But anyway, Saturday came back to where we were staying and I
- 18:36just felt rough and I thought OK I'm going to try and get a nap
- 18:40in. Really struggled, hadn't really
- 18:42eaten too much throughout the day.
- 18:44I definitely hadn't been drinking enough because there
- 18:46wasn't any. It wasn't anywhere really easy
- 18:48for me to grab water between my shoots that I was doing.
- 18:51So I'd had about 500 mil of water.
- 18:53I'd had three chocolate muffins for breakfast and I had, I
- 18:55grabbed a burger with you quickly at lunch.
- 18:58Then didn't feel like I could really eat anything before I
- 19:00went into the race. But in the warm up area, I'd
- 19:03managed to get about half a bottle of water in with about
- 19:06half a sachet of electrolytes. And then I had a few like
- 19:10strawberry laces and put a gel in my pocket.
- 19:12And then I decided before this, and I'd said this to you guys as
- 19:15well, I'm not bothered about really what my time is.
- 19:18I would, I'd like it to be faster than Barcelona Pioli,
- 19:21because what we spoke about with the sleds, but I'm not that
- 19:24arsed. I do want to enjoy it.
- 19:25I mean, for God's sake, we're literally running around the
- 19:28Principality Stadium, which is, which is crazy, yeah.
- 19:30We haven't even mentioned that. And so like, looking up into the
- 19:32stands and being like, this is sick.
- 19:34Don't get me wrong to be cooler if they're full, but like, I'm
- 19:36not that guy. And the novelty warped so fast,
- 19:40man. So yeah, it did.
- 19:41Like when you you've run one lap, wow.
- 19:43And then you're like, cool, just 24 more.
- 19:46But I set off and the intention was, so we've spoken about this
- 19:51before. I don't know if you've spoke
- 19:52about it on the podcast, but the way to play the game, I think
- 19:55with Hierarchs is you find the line of where you're pushing
- 19:58hard and you kind of Just Dance around it.
- 20:00And my aim for this race was to always be just below it.
- 20:05And then I said the one place I don't want to be below it is the
- 20:08burpees. I want to actually see if I can
- 20:10end myself on the burpees and see what it does to my race
- 20:12because I'm fed up for being slow on birthday board jumps.
- 20:15Now, what actually happened was I did the first run, I was
- 20:18holding a solid pace. I was letting a few people that
- 20:21I thought I would want to race alongside.
- 20:23There was a few Youtubers in my wave.
- 20:25I kind of want to race alongside them and just be them.
- 20:27But I let them go and came into the skier, did the ski, came
- 20:31out, got to the sleds. And again, as we said about
- 20:34Barcelona, they felt heavy. And I'm not saying that they
- 20:37felt easy, but this sled just moved.
- 20:40And then as I was pushing this first of the four lengths, I was
- 20:43thinking I could do this whole length without a rest
- 20:46discipline. Not going to do that.
- 20:47So I did 2/3 quick rest and then carried on with the rest of it.
- 20:50And as I came off the back, I stopped my watch and I could see
- 20:53how long it had taken me. And I was like, we're just going
- 20:57to keep going as we're going, we're enjoying it, but like at
- 20:59the moment we're ahead where we were in Barcelona.
- 21:01And you look very good on those first couple of.
- 21:03Runs. So I was really trying to smile
- 21:04and I was just like focusing like I said, being under that
- 21:07line so I could run with decent enough technique and keep it
- 21:11smooth. And then went to the sled pool.
- 21:13And again, the sled was moving relatively easy.
- 21:15But I immediately noticed something I've been struggling
- 21:17in the last couple of weeks is back lower back fatigue.
- 21:20Immediately in my lower back just felt like it ran out of
- 21:22energy. And I was like, OK, this is
- 21:24early on, like can afford to slow down a little bit here
- 21:27because I, like I said, I am ahead.
- 21:28But again, it is still moving. So I got through that and we're
- 21:31still like a good minute, a minute and a half ahead already.
- 21:35And that's when I was like, right now we're coming to the
- 21:38burpees. We're going to run sensibly, but
- 21:41we're going to push it. Now again, in Cardiff, the
- 21:43racecourse, the way that they sometimes do it is 2 lengths of
- 21:45burpees, 40 meters each. Sometimes it's one length of 80.
- 21:50In Cardiff, it was 6 lengths of like 10 to 12 meters.
- 21:54They weren't all the same. But what I had worked out again,
- 21:56because I've been filming so much, is it was about 7 burpy
- 21:58board jumps with a little rest in between, which I tried to use
- 22:03to my advantage. And I actually got through them
- 22:05and I did them fast. And I had them before.
- 22:06And don't get me wrong, it still wasn't fast compared to like
- 22:09fast, fast people, but it was the fastest I'd done, came off
- 22:12the back of it And I was like, OK, heart rate definitely high.
- 22:15But now we're now we're talking like 2 minutes ahead.
- 22:18Like if I can keep this progress and the next thing I set my
- 22:21sights on was, well, I didn't do the farmers carry on broken last
- 22:24time. And I, I don't know why.
- 22:26Like I've not really ever had an issue with farmers carry.
- 22:28So I went into farmers carry, did that unbroken and was like,
- 22:31OK, here we go. Here we go.
- 22:33This is happening. The one thing that still kind of
- 22:35scared me in the back of my head was the lunges.
- 22:37And I was like, I'm going to ignore that fear And I pick up
- 22:39this bag and I'm just going to start and just keep it smooth.
- 22:42Again, the lunges, I don't know what it was.
- 22:45It was 2 lengths of 50 meters, but I remember doing about 20
- 22:49lunges nice and fluid, looking up slowly to see how much
- 22:54further was left. Was it in the first length?
- 22:55And the length just looked like it was getting further away from
- 22:58me. I have the same.
- 22:59It looks like a tunnel, like how far it was and.
- 23:02She was like on films where they do that effect where it seems to
- 23:04zoom out, That's exactly what happened to me.
- 23:06And the person that I had overtaken already was then
- 23:09catching me back up and got me back.
- 23:11And I realised at this point, even though I'd only really just
- 23:14decided to go for it, there was nothing there.
- 23:17Yeah, I had. No, there was no extra gear.
- 23:20Even if I'd wanted there to be, there hadn't been.
- 23:22So I'd persevered and I just sort of said head down, like,
- 23:25let's not get defeated again by the lunges and we'll make it
- 23:29round to the Woobles. The last run was horrible.
- 23:33I could just feel my heart coming through my chest and I
- 23:35was like, right, well, we're still on for Apbs, so you.
- 23:38Can't slow down. The last run wasn't it went on
- 23:40forever. The last run was one of the
- 23:42longer ones as well. So coming around and by this
- 23:47time the smile was definitely like coming off my face.
- 23:50I was, the aim was to smile the whole way around.
- 23:52It was coming off my face. And as I was going into the war
- 23:55balls, I was really like, OK, I'm going to give everything I
- 23:58have because there'd been a lot going on.
- 24:00Put this on my Instagram, sorry. There'd been a lot going on
- 24:02behind the scenes in my life last few months and this was a
- 24:05this was a coping mechanism and it was a chance to prove to
- 24:08myself that mentally I could do stuff.
- 24:10When it was really hard. I came into the wool walls and I
- 24:15had been doing a lot of practice with heavier ball and it felt OK
- 24:19first set, Second set also kind of felt OK.
- 24:22And then it started to really slow down.
- 24:24And weirdly in training whenever I'm doing these, the thing that
- 24:28goes is my muscles, like my shoulders or my legs are just
- 24:31tired. At this point in the race, it's
- 24:33actually my breathing thing. I can't get my breathing down.
- 24:36So anyway, got to 90 and that's kind of when I don't remember
- 24:41too much more. So I know I did the 100 and
- 24:46there's videos of me stepping away from that quite slowly
- 24:50because I, I do sort of always remember being cautious that
- 24:55I've actually done the hundreds because there's so many times
- 24:57I've filmed people where they throw away and they have to come
- 24:59back. But in this video, where I am
- 25:03out of it, I, I'm smiling. I don't know what I'm smiling
- 25:06about. And I stumble across the line
- 25:08and I immediately, like, lie down on the floor.
- 25:11Because I remember like we were on the other side of the track.
- 25:15Oh, you couldn't hear us. But obviously like we're
- 25:17screaming at you because we're looking at our watches and we're
- 25:18like, he's on here, he's got to go.
- 25:20And he's just like standing around.
- 25:22We're like rum. Yeah, and I was, I was
- 25:24absolutely not in your. I was.
- 25:27Having a conversation in a completely different place.
- 25:30And then I, I crossed this line and I immediately had to put my
- 25:34legs up in the air because I I felt so light headed.
- 25:37And then there's another video where I actually stumble.
- 25:40I look like I'm 15 pints deep. I'm stumbling off the stage.
- 25:44I shake my head, I go over to everyone and again, this is this
- 25:47is classic me. But I go over to her and I'm
- 25:49like, thanks for spoiling. Like I'm all good.
- 25:52I'll come find you in a minute just so I can get them gone.
- 25:55And then as soon as that you guys all left to go and watch
- 25:57our friends. I got back on the floor, feet
- 26:00raised on this chair. I lay there for 20 minutes.
- 26:04Had a few people give me some apple, which I actually get in
- 26:05me. I was thinking, cool, I'm
- 26:06feeling better now. I ended up just swallowing my
- 26:09pride and just saying to another guy who just finished, like, can
- 26:12you go get someone, please? Came over and the guy was like,
- 26:15what's up? And I was like, so my whole
- 26:18right leg is in full cramp. And he was like, do you want to
- 26:21sit up? And I was like, OK, yeah.
- 26:22So he helped me sit up. My abs went into full cramp and
- 26:25I instantly threw up on the floor twice.
- 26:28And now I was rolling around. He was like, OK mate, let's get
- 26:30you, let's get you like onto the chair or something.
- 26:33And I was like, I can't move either of my legs.
- 26:34And we both looked at my legs and you can see the cramp
- 26:37rippling through my hamstrings and my it was just locked.
- 26:41So eventually these medics came over, they had a chat with me
- 26:44and the whole time now I was quite accomplishmentist.
- 26:46Like I was able to talk and they took me away, did a heart test,
- 26:50blood pressure checks, everything and it was fine.
- 26:52But the long shot, and this is where it's quite serious is I
- 26:57think it's fair to say that I'm in a current state of mild to
- 27:00medium rhabdo, which well rhabdo, my myelosis, myelosis,
- 27:04that's the that's the full Latin.
- 27:06Yeah, makes it sounds scarier. Essentially what that is, is
- 27:09when you push too hard without fueling properly for your
- 27:13muscles and your muscles actually do tear, but not in the
- 27:15same tear as like you've injured them and you've torn a muscle.
- 27:19It's to like they actually breakdown and when your muscles
- 27:23do that, they release a lot of chemicals that within the
- 27:26muscles that aren't great for your body.
- 27:29It can be quite damaging to your kidney, sorry to your liver,
- 27:33liver, and then obviously that passes on to your kidneys if you
- 27:36do the damage. But it's really not a great
- 27:38place to be. And I'm now kind of on watch of
- 27:40doing really low intensity activity for a while, which is
- 27:43fine because I'm not going to worlds.
- 27:45I've got nothing necessary on the cards, but it is quite
- 27:47dangerous. Another thing that I didn't talk
- 27:49about that I didn't do in the race was I didn't have any water
- 27:53throughout the race. Part of that was because I kept
- 27:56missing them, kept being inconveniently placed for me at
- 27:58the time. I I take that back now, but it
- 28:02was stupid and I wasn't right. And I don't think it's what
- 28:07people should do. And like I said, I'm kind of
- 28:08proud that I can push myself to that limit.
- 28:10But like it's so detrimental and it's so like genuinely for those
- 28:14that aren't aware, rather they can kill you like it has done,
- 28:17it does all the time. You see people die every year at
- 28:19marathons and events like that. A large cause of that is things
- 28:22like overheating, which then plays into things like rap
- 28:25though. So take it from me, it wasn't
- 28:28cool. I still didn't get the time I
- 28:30wanted, so there was no point in doing it.
- 28:32But it is what it is. Now, for those that have
- 28:36listened to our our debriefs, this is actually going to be
- 28:39quite a funny episode after all of that.
- 28:42Because we listened. It's so funny after the last
- 28:45episode. A lot of people, it turns out,
- 28:47seem to have Grind My Gears. Yeah.
- 28:49And we aren't going to cut that out of this episode.
- 28:51So what we did was we opened up the story while we were in
- 28:54Cardiff and said, look, we're going to do Grind My Gears and
- 28:57we're going to do a big, big part of this episode on Grind My
- 29:00Gears. But we'd love to hear your guys
- 29:02responses as well. So we're going to mix in, we're
- 29:05going to throw in a mixture of ours, and we're going to throw
- 29:07in a mixture of yours. If you're new to this and you
- 29:10didn't realize that you could have a say, always keep an eye
- 29:12on the Instagram story for The Mindset's podcast or drop
- 29:15something in the comments or even DM us because we love to
- 29:18have the interaction from those of you that are listening.
- 29:21So do you want to start us off with Chrome My Gears this week?
- 29:25Have you got something that's burning?
- 29:26Yeah, and I don't know how it's like fallen through the net this
- 29:30this long. OK, you're going to like it as
- 29:33well Damper 10 Warriors. I'm like how is that not my
- 29:37first ever grind my gears It's so.
- 29:40On brand, it's quite niche, but it's very on brand because this
- 29:42is this is kind of almost what I'd say you're famous for.
- 29:45Yeah, yeah, it's. About the damp OK, so I've also
- 29:49got a mini grind my gears off this OK, fine.
- 29:51Can I can I just get this in there?
- 29:53Please go. Here.
- 29:54How do you spell damper? That was my that was up next on
- 29:57my list, the Damner. Dampener is not a dampener.
- 30:01I do this from physics. I used to be an engineer.
- 30:03It's a damper. How was that?
- 30:05My next hour it's like in about comments, like when people call
- 30:07it dampener. Anyway, we digress.
- 30:10The damper setting is essentially on all of the
- 30:14Concept 2 machines. So you've got the concept rower,
- 30:17you've got the concept ski, and then you've got the concept two
- 30:19or the concept bike. They're all resistance from a
- 30:24fan, right? So you can let more or less air
- 30:26into the fan with what you call the damper.
- 30:29So you've got one through to 10. And I think a lot of people who
- 30:33potentially don't have experience with a lot of
- 30:35training on the on the Uggs will assume that damper 10 is the
- 30:39hardest or they're going to get the most out of damper 10.
- 30:43So you just crank it up, damper 10, whatever, go for it.
- 30:46But the damper is essentially, like I say, is affecting how
- 30:50much air comes into the fan. The more air that goes in, IE
- 30:53#10 the more air resistance there is, it feels harder to
- 30:56pull or push with your legs or whatever machine you're on.
- 31:00But you can create or figure out what damper setting you should
- 31:03be on based off the drag factor. And Simply put, the drag factor
- 31:07is a calculation which shows you how quickly the fan slows down
- 31:11based off every pull. Everyone's going to be slightly
- 31:14different based off fitness, strength, power output, body
- 31:17geometry, that kind of thing. Not necessarily you're going to
- 31:21be up on Dampa 10. Very rarely you're on Dampa 10.
- 31:23And I don't want to be misquoted here, but I was obviously I like
- 31:27to go down rabbit holes with things.
- 31:29I googled this and there was AI think an Olympic gold medalist.
- 31:34He was like maybe Slovenian or Croatian or something and he
- 31:38said unless you're an Olympic level heavyweight rower, you
- 31:42should never have the damper over 7.
- 31:45So when I see people in the gym with a damper just cranked up to
- 31:4810, I instantly assume they have no idea what they're doing.
- 31:51Now don't get me wrong, there is a time and a place to be up on
- 31:5310 probably depending on the session.
- 31:55But more likely than not, if your machine is clean and well
- 31:59maintained, you're looking at somewhere between maybe 4:00 and
- 32:026:00. And then this feeds into like
- 32:04another grind my gear, which I'm not going to go into now, But I
- 32:07see a lot of unsolicited advice on Instagram of like where
- 32:11should I have my damper setting from people who have no idea?
- 32:14And it's just like easy for them to say put it in and around 7 or
- 32:178 without actually having any understanding of what your DAMPA
- 32:20setting should be based off drag factor or anything else.
- 32:23So that's a big one for me and I don't want to get too passionate
- 32:26about it, but straight in there number 10 DAMPA setting, just
- 32:30avoid it. Well.
- 32:31I've gone from the ick to almost like the opposite end where I
- 32:35definitely used to do that when I used to use the gym.
- 32:37I used to because I don't understand.
- 32:39I was like, I want to be strong. I am strong man.
- 32:42I put on 10 but no you're completely right.
- 32:45And for those of you that have put it on 10 and realize how
- 32:48hard rowing is, it shouldn't be that hard and people don't
- 32:50choose to do that sport with it be that hard.
- 32:53But then something that I do now is when I'm in a high rocks
- 32:58race, for example, when you start to understand the benefits
- 33:00of the different levels, it's become quite trendy to do quite
- 33:03a low damper setting. So putting it actually down
- 33:06again, I still weigh like over 90 kilos, I'm still quite
- 33:10powerful. But I put the damper on like 3
- 33:12or 4 because then it's, it all becomes way more aerobic, which
- 33:16I have trained my body for, for this event rather than being a
- 33:19muscular endurance thing. Because if I toast myself in my
- 33:21muscles at the beginning of the race, then the sled pull is
- 33:25going to be a lot. The row later on is going to be
- 33:27slightly harder. My grip strength, like
- 33:29everything's going to be affected from that point on and.
- 33:31If I don't feel hard at the time, but the compounding effect
- 33:34of fatigue later on in, that's where you feel it, right?
- 33:37I don't feel it straight away. It's when you get to the lunges
- 33:39or when you get to the rowing later on in the race where it's
- 33:42actually going to have an impact.
- 33:43So that's quite a key thing as well, is like your drag factor,
- 33:45if we're going to go into the nerdy side of it should be
- 33:47dependent on the session you're doing, sure.
- 33:49And also the machine you're on, because no machine is created
- 33:52equal. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:53The gym that you train at is completely different in terms of
- 33:56the maintenance of the kit, the age of the kit of a machine down
- 33:59the road, you know, in a different gym.
- 34:01And, and I say that to everyone, it's like age, cleanliness and
- 34:04then atmospheric pressure, which is probably less important.
- 34:06But like, you should always test your drag factor when you're
- 34:10getting on a machine, especially if your machine is like
- 34:12monostructural and all you're doing is rowing or all you're
- 34:15doing is skiing or biking. It just gives a little bit more
- 34:18consistency across your training and as a result, your training
- 34:21is going to be much more effective.
- 34:22Just make it a little bit more scientific than just
- 34:25guesstimating. Yeah.
- 34:26So that was quite a serious one. I'm glad you have brought that
- 34:29up because that is quite on brand.
- 34:30I'm going to come back at you with a very different one.
- 34:34So someone's written in on this way.
- 34:36This is a you. The fact that all cheerleaders
- 34:39are world champions every year. Oh no.
- 34:42What? How?
- 34:44But I've got a this is like the same as why is the the NFL
- 34:50winning team world champion? Yeah, no, I I completely agree
- 34:53with that. Well, like baseball, I
- 34:54completely the NBL. That that that was because of
- 34:56NBNBL. The HLNBA combined the T.
- 34:59You know all of them all are they?
- 35:02Champions I. Completely agree.
- 35:03Champions of America. Completely agree but every
- 35:05cheerleading team from the UK seems to go to America for
- 35:07worlds every year and seems to win But like I know and I have
- 35:11known people that have been on like 8 different teams and
- 35:13they're like what's going on? Are you a world champion for
- 35:17going? Is it one of those?
- 35:19It's a bit like qualified for champs for high rocks.
- 35:21Yeah, as soon, yeah, as soon as people get the badge for high
- 35:23rocks and world champs. They were a world champion, but
- 35:25they weren't OK. That's one of my quick ones.
- 35:29Have you got other quick ones that you want to route through?
- 35:31Go. Go again.
- 35:32OK, my next one. I'm also, I have to caveat that
- 35:37because I recently made a cheerleading comment to a
- 35:40cheerleader and I got you got burned.
- 35:42Yeah, OK. And so I'm like, I'm sitting
- 35:44like very firmly on the fence here.
- 35:46And I'm not going to say too much.
- 35:48I respect all cheerleaders. I've got another one from this
- 35:51week. This actually goes.
- 35:53This was quite trendy I think in the 60s.
- 35:56But people who walk down the street blaring music, especially
- 36:00if it's like, not, well, I wouldn't expect them to play pop
- 36:04music. But like, it's never pot.
- 36:06It's never. Music is generally accepted.
- 36:08But like, yeah, walking down the street this weekend, there were
- 36:10three guys and it really pissed me.
- 36:12Off any any music out loud in public place just wear
- 36:16headphones. Or or even like watching TikTok
- 36:19or anything like. That watching sport, like I'm
- 36:21into sport, but the whole train carriage doesn't need to watch
- 36:24your football game. I'll tell you what this is
- 36:26something that's like actually pissed me off to the point where
- 36:28I nearly lost my mind when I was travelling.
- 36:32It was quite common in certain countries that headphones just
- 36:36aren't a thing. But the canned laughter on every
- 36:41single TikTok or real and bearing in mind how you watched
- 36:44it, like you just swipe, swipe, swipe.
- 36:45So all it was was about 2-3 hours on journey and it's the
- 36:50same laugh and it's usually I don't know how to it's like the
- 36:53Alvin and the Chipmunks laugh on repeat for two hours.
- 36:58Like made me go insane. So if you desire or music, how
- 37:02did you all down the street turn it off?
- 37:06Well, I can. I completely do that.
- 37:09All right, so you want me to go? Yeah, but I showed Angus before
- 37:12we started. My list now is I think the last
- 37:15week has been a tough week for me because my list has grown,
- 37:18like exponentially. This on Sony shop.
- 37:23This is a bit more jokey. When restaurants don't have Coke
- 37:27Zero, they only have diet. What is Diet Coke or.
- 37:30Right Sir, why don't you just get Coke 0 as well?
- 37:33Do you know what's really mad? It's also I don't care because I
- 37:37drink both but whatever but. Come on, a year, a year ago I
- 37:40was actually, no, not even a year ago, like 2 years ago, I
- 37:43was so team Diet Coke. Oh really?
- 37:45When Coke 0 came out, I was like, what is the point?
- 37:46You already have Diet Coke? Yeah.
- 37:48And then I did a blind taste testing of Pepsi, all the Pepsi
- 37:52versus all the Cokes and Coke 0 was clear and I didn't know.
- 37:56And I was like, my whole life's been a lie.
- 37:59I actually don't really like Diet Coke very much.
- 38:00Yeah. And since then, yeah, majorly on
- 38:03the Coke 0 train. And I do agree that it is a far
- 38:06superior version than Diet Yoke and that.
- 38:09But you should just have it. Yeah.
- 38:11I don't, I don't understand if you're going to have Coke, if
- 38:13you're going to have Diet Coke, you might as well just have Coke
- 38:150 as well. And what's the problem with with
- 38:18stocking both? Because then it is kind of long,
- 38:22like you could just have loads of 1 instead of have to work.
- 38:25They're going to have some of both.
- 38:26Regular coke? Diet Coke.
- 38:28They're already ordering two. You're probably ordering from
- 38:32the same place. Click the button and add some
- 38:34Coke Zeros in. Yeah, fair.
- 38:35I think that is fair, especially when you're going to like an
- 38:37establishment. Yeah, like an actual.
- 38:39I'm not going to a friend's house.
- 38:40No, this is not OK. And it's like, also, I'm going
- 38:44to drink it either way, but it just, it just grinds my gears,
- 38:46Yeah. That's fine.
- 38:47That's the purpose. A rational.
- 38:50Grind my gear. Let's let's have some from
- 38:52people that have written it. One of one of the ones that was
- 38:55quite common, a few people brought this up was people not
- 38:58putting their weights back in the gym.
- 38:59Oh, come on. But how old are we really?
- 39:01Yeah. You know, I don't get it.
- 39:03I don't know. I also don't know.
- 39:05And I would love to ask these people, who do they think does
- 39:07it? So this is, I categorize these
- 39:10people. It's like, oh, someone gets paid
- 39:13to do that. Or like, have you seen people
- 39:15like just drop rubbish? I go, well, someone's going to
- 39:17pick it up. Someone gets paid to do that.
- 39:19Oh, I hate those people. I would quite like to find out
- 39:22where they work and do stuff that they will have to do and be
- 39:25like, well, you're going to get paid to do it.
- 39:26Yeah. Oh yeah, obviously someone's
- 39:28gets paid to do that. No they don't.
- 39:30No, they. Don't get paid to put your shit
- 39:31away, put away yourself. Because also, if I'm working in
- 39:35the gym and someone doesn't put their kit away, guess who's
- 39:37putting it away? So.
- 39:40I've also. It's just, it's just like
- 39:42general, like common manners. I've been to a gym where who my
- 39:46university gym used to charge people if they didn't it's £20
- 39:49on the spot. You didn't, so you'd get a
- 39:51warning but it would be marked on your account for the year
- 39:55that you'd had a warning. So it wasn't like warning mate.
- 39:57If you don't do that year today you're going to get one warning.
- 40:00You walk out of the gym where you try to move on to another
- 40:02piece of equipment and you haven't left it for someone to.
- 40:05It is ready to move on, £20 fine, straight on there.
- 40:08Oh gosh. Beautiful.
- 40:09Yeah. Gym was perfect.
- 40:10Yeah, I bet it was. And The thing is, once that
- 40:12rule's in place, yeah, everyone just understands and plays by
- 40:15the rule. But.
- 40:16You shouldn't have to like you shouldn't have to threaten
- 40:18people. They just yeah, I say people
- 40:21don't say please and thank you. Like rude to to staff in
- 40:24restaurants. It's the same kind of It's all
- 40:26they all. They all fit in that bracket in
- 40:29the bin. I've got more.
- 40:31Yeah, I've got quite a lot, though we've got quite a few.
- 40:33Like you guys are just as frustrated as we are.
- 40:36I've got one saying that when you're training in a public gym
- 40:39and people don't understand what a superset is.
- 40:42Oh yeah, I can understand how that might be frustrating.
- 40:46It would. It could definitely get annoying
- 40:48with people trying to come in and yeah, get in the way.
- 40:50I get it though, like it's hard to to take a lot of equipment
- 40:54when someone else also wants to use the same piece of equipment.
- 40:57Well this ties these two should not be in the same room.
- 41:00Someone else has written in and said when people hog.
- 41:04This this one is about the other person.
- 41:06Pretty much where is it when people feel the need to hog more
- 41:10than two sets of dumbbells? So if you are doing, if you're
- 41:15doing like a drop set or a super set.
- 41:17Sometimes you do. Use three sets, but like you are
- 41:19a bit of an an asshole really if you are keeping them and you can
- 41:23see other people are using. Them so glad I think training a
- 41:25commercial gym, but like a lot of my clients training
- 41:28commercial gyms and as a result, I have to be wary and mindful.
- 41:31I can't just program, OK, you're going to row and then you're
- 41:34going to side push and then you're going to do this and then
- 41:36you're going to do warbles and they're like, I cannot, I cannot
- 41:39man all those machines at once. Like I'm going to spend half my
- 41:42time like chatting to people to say that I'm using that machine.
- 41:45So it's just like, I guess what? It's frustrating.
- 41:47It's frustrating. What else have we got 01 that
- 41:51I'm so on board with and this doesn't make any sense is if
- 41:55you're training in a gym and someone steps over your bar,
- 41:58like if you're doing dead lifts or something like that and
- 42:00you've got your bar set up and not even that you're like about
- 42:03to do a wrap like you could be in your.
- 42:05Rest no. This is so irrational.
- 42:07Why are you stepping over my bar?
- 42:09No, that's irrational. I don't think that is
- 42:11irrational. It grinds my gears.
- 42:13There is a whole gym. Yeah, don't walk over my bar.
- 42:16I just claim. And actually I did say when when
- 42:19this first came in, I did mention it to you.
- 42:21And I think this actually comes from when I used to play
- 42:23American football. It's all like contacts.
- 42:25Like a disrespect thing. If, yeah, if I was to tackle you
- 42:29and you were on the ground, I got up and stepped over you like
- 42:35that is like a dominant, Yeah, like I've just put you in like
- 42:39in the mud, like get wrecked, yeah.
- 42:42And that's what it feels like. You step over my barbell.
- 42:44This is so irrational. I can understand that, that
- 42:47whole process, but I think that's rational.
- 42:49Also like if you can step over it.
- 42:51Just go around. Just go round it.
- 42:53You don't have to piss me off like that.
- 42:55So it's only you and that whoever wrote that it's only you
- 42:582 who care about that. I care about like weightlifting
- 43:02etiquette. If I'm going to make a lift,
- 43:04never walk in front of that person.
- 43:07It's distracting in the eye line and that kind of thing.
- 43:09That's disrespectful. But walking over the bar if
- 43:11you're not even using it? This the the next person has
- 43:15exposed themself with the type of gym they use because they've
- 43:18said and this is valid. But like this isn't a daily
- 43:20problem for me when people don't shut the door after leaving the
- 43:24sauna that does. Yeah, that does piss me off.
- 43:28Or like you. You go into the sauna and you
- 43:30close it really slowly. It's like it affects the
- 43:32temperature like straight away. Yeah, I get anything else.
- 43:35It isn't like a quick fix. Me going and closing the door
- 43:38means I'm now pissed off for at least 2 to 3 minutes while I get
- 43:40back to temperature. Probably longer, yeah, yeah.
- 43:43And it wasn't hard, was it? I'd love to know who wrote that.
- 43:45I am so. Bougie, you can know, but I'm
- 43:47keeping this anonymous because I don't want to get other people
- 43:49cancelled. It should only ever be asked
- 43:52that's. So.
- 43:53Funny, this is an interesting one because you're a coach when
- 43:56people assume your capacity or capability based on your
- 43:59appearance. Interesting.
- 44:02What are your thoughts on that? Because as someone that coaches
- 44:05classes and gets new members in, you don't know their background.
- 44:08Never assume and never assume and, and I've said this before
- 44:13and I'll say it again and I don't know why I use this phrase
- 44:15but it's like it's why I think the fitness industry is so
- 44:19perverse because you assume based on looks.
- 44:22It's why some PTS will get more work than others because 1 has
- 44:26like a shredded 6 pack and one looks like they don't train.
- 44:29It's not based on knowledge. The one who looks like they
- 44:31don't train might be the most knowledgeable coach ever, the
- 44:34most sympathetic coach, the most empathetic coach.
- 44:36But the one who has a six pack, you go, well he must know what
- 44:39he's talking about. Well, they must know what
- 44:40they're talking about because they look a certain way.
- 44:42That annoys me so much. And actually this is this is a
- 44:45really interesting one because I think earlier in my coaching
- 44:48career I would have probably assumed that someone could do XY
- 44:52and Z because of the way they looked.
- 44:54And as I've matured as a coach, I just never assumed like base
- 44:58it off conversations and previous experience and always
- 45:01start slowly and then go from there.
- 45:04I. Think that was one thing that I
- 45:05found really difficult as well, because when I well, my reflexes
- 45:08were crazy when I first started training hierarchy stuff with
- 45:16you coaching it and I realized that there was this other group
- 45:19of boys that were doing these sessions and they were like
- 45:21hard. I was aware that in the physical
- 45:24state I was in, I wasn't at the level that they were at, but I
- 45:27was like, I have been and like mentally I, I still am, but like
- 45:34I want to train with them. I don't know how I'm going to
- 45:36get to training with them because none of them is
- 45:37individuals are going to be like you should be a training park.
- 45:40But like, I know I should be, but like I need to bridge that
- 45:44gap and show it. And that's, that's kind of what
- 45:47happens. But like, I do get that as well
- 45:49because that's toxic. The same person tied in when men
- 45:53feel like they have to inform you of the risks of lifting as a
- 45:56woman. Oh no, just some people, man.
- 46:03There's so much. The thing is this.
- 46:04Quite cool word. There's so much science coming
- 46:06out about this at the moment as well, but like certain points
- 46:11where men would potentially project that women shouldn't be
- 46:14doing too much. There's things like pregnancy as
- 46:15well when you know, you should be taking care of the child
- 46:19that's inside. There's quite a lot of science
- 46:21that's come out now saying that like, yeah, maybe not be doing
- 46:25some of the crazy, crazy things, but like strength training,
- 46:28doing some form of training is actually so beneficial to you
- 46:31throughout your pregnancy, but also to the baby.
- 46:34I could go in on this. One of my favorite things ever
- 46:38is when there's a girl in the gym and she's lifting heavier
- 46:41than all the guys. I just, and all the guys are
- 46:43just like, why is that? There's just some, so many
- 46:47stupid assumptions that men make for whatever.
- 46:49It's hard for me for us to sit here and say that when I
- 46:51remember there's a few actually members that I've worked with
- 46:55who have trained pretty much all the way up until their due date,
- 46:58like super moms. And it's been the point where
- 47:01they've come to the session and I'm like, oh God, I hope I'm not
- 47:04coaching this one in case the baby pops out or whatever.
- 47:07But like just, yeah, I, I can't have any more admiration for the
- 47:12ability to deal with all of the stresses of being pregnant and
- 47:16then also coming in and and training to like the best of
- 47:19their abilities. And obviously we modify training
- 47:21based off their needs and whatever and what they're
- 47:24comfortable doing. But training whilst pregnant?
- 47:27So sick. Man that's so cool.
- 47:28Another thing that I find inspiring, but like genuinely, I
- 47:31just, I just think it's sick is like I could see on Instagram
- 47:37that there could be like a woman who is maybe 50 kilos and then
- 47:43you'll see that she's doing like a proper power clean.
- 47:46Oh yeah, yeah. Clean and jerk weight lighting.
- 47:48Yeah, with like 110. Kilos, relative weight and
- 47:50weight lifting is unbelievable. I don't weigh that much, but you
- 47:54could throw me around like a toy is so sick, so cool.
- 47:58But that's so cool that you can do that.
- 47:59That's like such a good like representation of relative
- 48:02strength is watching the top level Olympic weight lifters.
- 48:05Yeah, it's, it's phenomenal, honestly.
- 48:07And and like. The whole thing that was out a
- 48:10few years ago, like sleeper builds.
- 48:12Yeah, hugely present. Especially I think in in women's
- 48:16sport, because it's so hard to tell with women in the gym space
- 48:22and the fitness space where that strength lies, because some
- 48:25women are very lower body dominant in terms of their
- 48:28strength. And don't get me wrong, men are
- 48:29as well. But with men, I feel like the
- 48:31way that we do train and the way that our physique, our physique
- 48:33respond with testosterone, it is sometimes more obvious to tell
- 48:37where the training is spent. With women, that's not
- 48:40necessarily true. And so you do suddenly get these
- 48:43amazing surprises of someone's ability.
- 48:46And that kind of ties into not assuming someone's ability
- 48:48again, or the ability because you don't know, because
- 48:51everyone's body is different person to person.
- 48:54And it's just like form over function, like you don't have to
- 48:58look a certain way to compete in whatever or like perform at a
- 49:01certain level. Like, yeah, it's just a that's a
- 49:05frustrating one. I can understand why that all
- 49:07grind your gears. That grinds my gears.
- 49:08They grind. Yeah, my gears.
- 49:09I'm going to jump back into one of mine.
- 49:11Yeah, Go when things say they're high protein when they're quite
- 49:14literally lower protein than the regular alternative.
- 49:17Yeah, it's like my bagel one the other day.
- 49:20What was that? Well, I was like protein bagels
- 49:23versus bagels, and they literally have the same protein
- 49:25or like less protein. Here's another one if you're
- 49:28trying to do some form of dieting or just reduce your
- 49:32calorie intake. Things like Mars bars where they
- 49:35have their 99 Cal version. If you actually bought a normal
- 49:38Mars bar, the calorie density is lower in a normal Mars bar than
- 49:42the snack bars, and that for such.
- 49:45A size size. It's a size thing but I think
- 49:49you can buy a size of Mars Bar which is actually less than 99
- 49:52calories. But isn't the snack fun size?
- 49:55There is no time but like weight wise is actually more like.
- 49:58It's really annoying. It pisses me off quite a lot.
- 50:01Yeah, I can understand why that frustrates you.
- 50:04I've got a load. It's obviously because we're at
- 50:06High Rocks over the weekend, but I've got so many a higher
- 50:09specific. One I've got a higher specific
- 50:11one as well. My one's one of mine's too
- 50:14specific. I don't think I can say that on
- 50:16the broadcast. I'm going to save that for our
- 50:18foods. That will be for our exclusive.
- 50:20OK. Yeah.
- 50:21But this one is tough. I don't know if this is I should
- 50:25say this, but wearing a hydration vest for high rocks,
- 50:30OK. I don't know if that's like an
- 50:31irrational thing for me, but I don't.
- 50:35I don't agree with that for so many reasons.
- 50:38The reason I'm being. Quiet is because I'm going to
- 50:41reference one of the listeners who wrote in and said what
- 50:46grinds their gears. People getting annoyed about
- 50:48what other people wear on their runs.
- 50:50Hydration packs of five KS, for example.
- 50:52Oh shit. So we we have a bit of a battle
- 50:55going on here. I think that people can wear
- 50:58what they want. Yes, when they want, yeah.
- 51:00So do I. I do also agree in a hierarch
- 51:05setting when there are water stations and refuelling stations
- 51:10that possibly hydration pack isn't necessary.
- 51:12Yeah, for maybe the duration of event as well.
- 51:17Yeah, but maybe you should have had a hydration.
- 51:18Pack I probably should have done, you know, and that maybe,
- 51:22maybe that's the egg on my face. Running with a hydration, you
- 51:24could run one thing and wear a hydration pack, whatever.
- 51:27You can put your keys in it. You can put your phone in it.
- 51:29You don't need any of that for for high rocks.
- 51:32You got Bagdrop, man. I think Bagdrop your hydration
- 51:34vest. I think you could do, you could
- 51:36do all of these things with or without them.
- 51:38Yeah, but you could, you could try and do an 8 day ultra
- 51:41without anything. I mean, it wouldn't go very
- 51:43well, but like you could, but like then you could also do,
- 51:48like you said, do 1K with it because it makes sense.
- 51:51Yeah, in certain places, like also sometimes I run to places
- 51:54as my form of commute. Yeah.
- 51:56So I need to need to take your stuff.
- 51:57Yeah. In something, yeah.
- 51:58So yeah, no. And also.
- 52:00Like I get that, like I don't want to be judge mental if it
- 52:02makes you do exercise and enjoy the exercise more than that's a
- 52:05good thing. But this is grind my gears, so
- 52:08that grinds my gears. Do you know, I didn't want to
- 52:11say this next one, but now I'm going to.
- 52:13You've forced me into a corner. And I think it's kind of funny
- 52:17because I we're, we're both now termed Hyroxes as well to do the
- 52:21sport. But Hyroxes in general, man,
- 52:24they're not cool. No.
- 52:26Just the swag they run in the nose tapes the gloves sometimes
- 52:29man, like, well what you want, but like.
- 52:33The thing is, it's all the same, Yeah.
- 52:35And I and there's. So many good photos of me from
- 52:37the weekend running past people wearing nose tape as well like
- 52:41I'm tapeless. 1. Thing what happened to you?
- 52:44This is actually. Really niche because this is
- 52:45within the hierarch space, but this is also within the
- 52:50understanding of the videography stuff.
- 52:52For those who aren't aware. I don't know everyone that I
- 52:55film. That's quite common this.
- 52:57Is so good. However, as a result of that, I
- 53:01do need to know where I can find someone I'm going to film before
- 53:04a race. Sometimes I might not have time
- 53:07between races. So what I need to know is what
- 53:09you look like. I can stalk you on Instagram
- 53:13pretty good at recognizing faces, but you do have to
- 53:14understand that any one time there could be 1000 people out
- 53:16on that track. So I need to know what you're
- 53:19wearing. And you don't always look the
- 53:20same way as your Instagram. You don't.
- 53:22You don't always look the same way, especially when you're in
- 53:23the pain game. So I usually say, you know, in
- 53:28the non weirdest way possible. Like can you show me what you're
- 53:31wearing? I don't say that.
- 53:33Have you got a picture of your Have you got a picture of your
- 53:35race fit is usually what I go for.
- 53:37I feel like that's better. Everyone wears the same thing.
- 53:40Everyone wears the same fucking thing.
- 53:43It is a brand with some numbers on it.
- 53:46Usually there's got in white on a black vest if you're a guy and
- 53:51it usually doesn't stay on for more than one run and then black
- 53:54shorts. Always black shorts.
- 53:55Always black shorts for women it is a little bit more different.
- 53:59I feel like there is more choice in your own as world of.
- 54:01But you look at any one time on the race track, you've got like
- 54:06100 girls wearing the same thing, even though there's lots
- 54:08of different fits. That's like, and it's it's
- 54:10uncanny that maybe if you've looked out on course at any one
- 54:14time, let's say if there's a blue matching set in this
- 54:17women's double s, you might be like, oh, OK, I can only see
- 54:20five of them. They're all going to be in the
- 54:21same wave, guaranteed. And.
- 54:25Cut your loss and just film everyone.
- 54:27Here's here's a little secret. The number of times I have spent
- 54:30two minutes getting all the angles of someone and I've
- 54:33actually debated after the race like do I find this person and
- 54:35just send it to them because I they might as.
- 54:37Well have. Wasted my time filming them
- 54:39anyway. Have you ever sent content
- 54:41that's of the wrong person to them?
- 54:43No. OK, that's good.
- 54:44Yeah, that's very professional. Are you very professional?
- 54:47Yeah. Although what does happen quite
- 54:50a lot is at the start when everyone runs out.
- 54:53I have maybe .2 a second to find the.
- 54:56Face if they haven't seen you just have like.
- 54:58General Cordy But then the number of times, and this has
- 55:01happened quite a lot over the last two events where I have
- 55:04gone, I've I've filmed the the them generally because I haven't
- 55:07seen the face. So I haven't been able to track
- 55:09them as they run past me. So I just film it generally and
- 55:11I cut it. And as they're going around and
- 55:13running this first lap, I have time to look at it and be like,
- 55:14where were they? The number of times I've watched
- 55:17the video in midnight. They're.
- 55:19Not here. Like what, I got 1 back actually
- 55:22from Cardiff because I, I filmed it and I knew that he was also
- 55:26at the front. So like where did he go?
- 55:29He managed to be perfectly behind someone else the entire
- 55:33time to the point where the only thing that ever stuck out was
- 55:37the bill of his cap behind the head.
- 55:39And so I filmed it and I was like, I mean, I'm still going to
- 55:42send this to him, but I don't know how he's going to eat it.
- 55:45So yeah, Henry, if you listen to this, I'm sorry you are actually
- 55:48in that, but you can't be seen. To preface all of that, he
- 55:51actually does make some really nice content, so I try.
- 55:53He's not just going to point and shoot randomly.
- 55:55The content is actually really good.
- 55:57Another grimewag is that we had people write in and say, by the
- 55:59way, was your attitude. Yeah, we've had a few people say
- 56:03your attitude. Grimes.
- 56:04They give this, I love it. I think that's why they come
- 56:06back. Oh, that's tough.
- 56:09Thanks guys. OK.
- 56:11Hold on, I've got so many more, but I don't know how long we're
- 56:14going to go for. OK, I reckon we should do three
- 56:16more each. Oh God.
- 56:20OK, you have two. Unless you've.
- 56:22Got. Unless you've got three, Really
- 56:24no. No, no, I've got.
- 56:25One more from this. I'm done all right, but I have
- 56:28one that says people who race more than 100 mile ultras and
- 56:33then go back to full training after a few days.
- 56:37And I'm also going to change that slightly.
- 56:38People that run far and go back to strange training.
- 56:41Because for a lot of people, running anything like under mile
- 56:43ultra might not even be in on the cards, but like even running
- 56:46a marathon and then going back to the gym the next day.
- 56:48Marathon. Yeah.
- 56:49I'm a hypocrite. So I think it's like, it's well
- 56:52documented and you can read this online that you should rest a
- 56:56day for every mile that you run. Exactly.
- 56:59Yeah, yeah, yeah. So like post half rest 13 days,
- 57:02which which seems excessive. And I and I guess it's like
- 57:05there's probably levels to it. If you're, I guess you can kind
- 57:09of argue this both ways. If you're an elite level
- 57:11athlete, you probably have the tolerance and the capacity to
- 57:15recover and deal with the volume quicker.
- 57:18But because of the output that you have across the race, maybe
- 57:21you do need longer to recover. But on the flip side, maybe you
- 57:24don't. So it is what it is, maybe 20.
- 57:26What is it, 26 miles from marathon?
- 57:29Like that seems a lot. 100 days of rest that seem a lot.
- 57:33I'd ask that to someone like Will Gouge who's just run across
- 57:36Australia. Like how long he's taking to
- 57:38recover. Like for sure he's not back in
- 57:40the gym right now. And anyone who does an ultra or
- 57:42like the guys who run the backyard ultra with BPM the
- 57:45other day, that was sick. For sure.
- 57:47They've taken some time off. I think I actually saw one of
- 57:49them training with Lucy Davies on her story yesterday or
- 57:52something. Yeah, he probably hasn't taken
- 57:54enough time off, but whatever. Everyone reacts differently.
- 57:56But yeah, for sure you're not in the gym the next day.
- 57:59And if you are like there should be very little to no intensity.
- 58:02I'm like you're skinny, the legs or like you're stretching or
- 58:05and. Tiny doesn't really grind my
- 58:07gears, but like kind of does is people thinking that rest means
- 58:10do nothing. Yeah.
- 58:12Because like there's a time in a place, there is a time in a
- 58:14place where you actually should do nothing.
- 58:16And if we look at me coming off the back of this weekend like
- 58:19I'm not training the way I would be, I'm still making sure that
- 58:24I'm moving. Because, like, if I grabbed my
- 58:27hair, yeah. Well, if I don't, when I, if, I
- 58:29mean when we get up from sitting in these chairs, my legs will be
- 58:32quite tight. And if I continue to do that,
- 58:35they wouldn't really get the improvement of the blood, taking
- 58:38away any information which like needs to happen for me to
- 58:40actually recover. So if I, if I ran like an ultra
- 58:43marathon and then just sat in a chair for four days, I'd be
- 58:47probably worse off than if I tried to go up and, you know,
- 58:50move around and that sort of thing.
- 58:51So like, yeah, rest doesn't necessarily we mean do nothing
- 58:55is a grind my Gears of mine. There you go.
- 58:57But let me hand over T for oh. God I feel like I'm going to be
- 59:02a villain after this race day. Much so.
- 59:06Like once you've finished your marathon wearing a marathon
- 59:09T-shirt or like everyone walking around in their Hackney half
- 59:12T-shirts from whatever. Like 2014 I ran 1/2 marathon.
- 59:16Either a 10K. Don't get the race merch man
- 59:18that's CrossFit. Can't give out T-shirts for
- 59:21competing in CrossFit as well. That's just not a cool T-shirt
- 59:24to wear. You're telling me you've never
- 59:26worn one of those T-shirts to coach class or anything?
- 59:32I realize my mistakes now the. Silence is so deafening.
- 59:36I realize my mistakes now. Just I, I like you said, I made
- 59:40that mistake so you guys don't have to.
- 59:42OK, nice. Very much have.
- 59:43You got have you got a last nail in the coffin or?
- 59:46I've got like lots of pretty niche ones actually.
- 59:50Someone, someone commented on my story, we'll go for this one.
- 59:52I will keep it anonymous. And I thought this was quite
- 59:56niche. And I don't know whether it
- 59:57upsets me that much or not, but when you do RDLS in the gym or
- 1:00:00deadlifts in the gym, taking the barbell from the racks into your
- 1:00:04hips to start the lift rather than lifting the bar from the
- 1:00:08floor. And this person was passionately
- 1:00:10upset about the fact that people do that.
- 1:00:13OK. Which I guess is niche, and I'll
- 1:00:16speak on Hugh's behalf on this one because it's something that
- 1:00:19really rattles him as well. It's like part of the reason why
- 1:00:23you dead lift is to get the benefit from lifting from the
- 1:00:26floor and you're going to go down to the floor and lift it
- 1:00:28from the floor anyway. So why don't you just start on
- 1:00:32the floor? I maybe understand that it's
- 1:00:34easier to load the bar when it's in the air, but.
- 1:00:37I don't know, I've done that with audios.
- 1:00:39See again this this person was like are the Earls deadlifts
- 1:00:42same category go from the full get the benefit for you got long
- 1:00:46legs like maybe you get you get a free you.
- 1:00:48Know I said I've been dealing with low back fatigue.
- 1:00:50I tried to reintroduce deadlifts.
- 1:00:53Fuck them really. See for me I took them out years
- 1:00:56ago because of the problems they just caused.
- 1:00:57And like I can get to a relative level of strength, but the
- 1:01:00relative amount of fatigue it does when I should could just do
- 1:01:03something else or just stick to like hex bar track bar deadlift
- 1:01:06instead, which isn't quite the same.
- 1:01:09In terms of the hinging, it's similar, but it's more of like a
- 1:01:10civil. Anyone judges me from being a
- 1:01:13poor coach? Like maybe like Angus is
- 1:01:16hilariously tall. Like we've discussed this
- 1:01:18before, like his leg length is ridiculous.
- 1:01:21So it's like, I can understand why, but maybe maybe I need to
- 1:01:24look at your technique or you play around with like a wider
- 1:01:27stance. So it's like a sumo date.
- 1:01:29This is the thing I I tried to move more towards like a sumo
- 1:01:32stance because yes, I'm tall, but I'm also not like perfectly
- 1:01:36proportionately tall. So like I have very long legs
- 1:01:39and one of the issues is my shin length, if you haven't seen is
- 1:01:44like quite long. So for me to actually pull a bar
- 1:01:47in an ideal world I would be pulling it through my knee.
- 1:01:50But because that can't happen my my leg has to straighten first,
- 1:01:53which then means there's so much load through my lower back that.
- 1:01:56I do think you probably get like more bang from your butt from
- 1:01:59other exercises and like the risk reward is probably not
- 1:02:02right. That's it.
- 1:02:02Yeah, and I think that enough I've kind of come down to
- 1:02:04because otherwise, yeah, my love, I've never, so I've never
- 1:02:07chastised dead lifting. No, not not widespread.
- 1:02:09Yeah, but just for me specifically, like I do struggle
- 1:02:12with it. And if you want to take a look
- 1:02:13and you can just look and agree and be like, yeah, that's fine.
- 1:02:16Yeah, you're completely right. Then that's all good.
- 1:02:19Well round off ground like is there guys?
- 1:02:21If you've got more and you want to be more involved in future,
- 1:02:23then we can definitely make sure that you guys are heard as much
- 1:02:27as we are when we do this. I need to know these people
- 1:02:30calling me out of my bad attitude.
- 1:02:31There's no way I'm going to really reveal over it was just
- 1:02:34me three times. I'm joking.
- 1:02:36However, we're gonna move on to what is more towards the end of
- 1:02:40these podcasts in a normal sort of format, and we're gonna move
- 1:02:43on to the Rock Sport Quiz. Well, it's not quiz this week.
- 1:02:48You mixed it up last time, and we liked that.
- 1:02:52We liked the variety in games. We have a couple of choices in
- 1:02:56game. OK, you're aware of the how many
- 1:02:59can you name game And you're also aware of 21 questions, but
- 1:03:03I'll leave it to you. Which one would you rather play?
- 1:03:05I think I want to play the and this is such a stupid decision.
- 1:03:09I want to play. How many can you name?
- 1:03:11OK, so in this game, ladies and gentlemen, what we're going.
- 1:03:16To do Brain dead, I'm going to go.
- 1:03:17Is we're going to have a topic and we're going to keep these
- 1:03:20relative to the fitness space, but there's going to be a topic
- 1:03:25and it's going to be how many of something can you name?
- 1:03:29We're then going to go back and forth about how many of those
- 1:03:31things we reckon we can name. And you've got to say a number
- 1:03:34and then at some point you're going to call bullshit on the
- 1:03:37other person. So I could say name, number,
- 1:03:40name a number of protein powder flavors.
- 1:03:44Charles could say I can name 5:00.
- 1:03:45I could say I can definitely name 8.
- 1:03:47You might say, do you know I can name 25 and I'm going to say
- 1:03:50bullshit. Once I say bullshit, Charles has
- 1:03:53a minute from then to start naming that number of flavours.
- 1:03:56If he can do it, he gets point, if he can't, I get.
- 1:03:58That would have been an easy one.
- 1:04:00You've seen the My Protein list. OK, they have every flavour.
- 1:04:03OK, The thing is with that I need to get it out to check if
- 1:04:06you do it so you have one minute to name as many as possible.
- 1:04:09Guys, if you're listening to this, feel free to play along.
- 1:04:121st I'm going to get a timer ready because I'm going to need.
- 1:04:15And you have some, you have some topics.
- 1:04:18I have some topics. Yeah feel free you can.
- 1:04:20You can also suggest topic if you feel like these are two one
- 1:04:22sided. OK, let me get.
- 1:04:30Yeah, I've seen this done so many times before, whether it's
- 1:04:32YouTube, TikTok and you sit there watching it and you go,
- 1:04:36God, these guys are idiots. How can they not think of
- 1:04:38anything but when you're in that the high pressure situation
- 1:04:42behind the camera or in front of the camera?
- 1:04:45Number one, Oh no, is running shoe brands.
- 1:04:49How many can you name? 7.
- 1:04:54I reckon I can name 9. Yeah, Bullshit.
- 1:05:01Go. OK, go.
- 1:05:03Adidas, Nike, Saucony Rad Nice Zara.
- 1:05:10OK, it's so nice. Puma, Schlazinger.
- 1:05:14I've got what, two more I need? I think that's seven so far.
- 1:05:16I've got 46 seconds. I'm chilling.
- 1:05:21Damn. See, this is what happened
- 1:05:24because I've got loads in my head now.
- 1:05:26I easily could have done that. I've got loads.
- 1:05:29What else is there? Why is this so tough 30?
- 1:05:32Seconds. 30. Seconds is pretty mad.
- 1:05:34Everyone's screaming at you at home.
- 1:05:36Yeah, everyone's screaming. There's so many easy ones.
- 1:05:38It isn't mad. How?
- 1:05:39How blank your mind goes. Whatever.
- 1:05:41Oh, Reebok. One more and Jordan?
- 1:05:48Shut up. No way.
- 1:05:49Fuck, that's Mikey running shoes.
- 1:05:55Jordans, Come on, five seconds. Why did I not say a OK, I can't
- 1:06:01go on. What would you have said?
- 1:06:02Brooks Mizuno. No.
- 1:06:04Leaning. Leaning.
- 1:06:06Yeah, it's a Chinese brand. Oh yeah.
- 1:06:09Come on, babe. OK, right.
- 1:06:10One point to you 1.2 OK that. Was good.
- 1:06:13So the next one is cable equipment in a gym.
- 1:06:22Cable machines like their actual name as well.
- 1:06:25Like you can't just give them a name of what you call them.
- 1:06:29I'm going to say 5. 7. Oh, I don't want to make myself
- 1:06:42look like an idiot. Bullshit, bullshit.
- 1:06:45OK, so we've got the lap pulled down, Yeah.
- 1:06:47That was going to be my first one as well.
- 1:06:49We've. Got the PEC deck, We've got the
- 1:06:50seated row tricep push down. Yeah.
- 1:06:56How many did you say? 7?
- 1:06:57I said 7, what am I at? 4 what else?
- 1:07:04Well, you've got the standard like cable machine which is just
- 1:07:07like the cable area. But can I just name exercises
- 1:07:10off that I rear delt flies? Well, you're naming exercises.
- 1:07:14You're not naming machines. Yeah, it's a tricep push down
- 1:07:18screen. That one from the, the, the,
- 1:07:20the, the chest fly. Yeah.
- 1:07:24Where you put your elbows on it and you pull them together.
- 1:07:26That's using cables, shoulder press.
- 1:07:28There's a cable version of that. Shut up.
- 1:07:30Is that? Yeah.
- 1:07:31Oh, what? Like, Oh, OK.
- 1:07:32Fly. Yeah.
- 1:07:32Let's see one more. I think one more.
- 1:07:37Yeah, I don't. Think shoulder fly machine as
- 1:07:40well. Yeah, there's the one.
- 1:07:42Yeah, Yeah, I do. There you.
- 1:07:43Go 7 Done all right, one point to you one all.
- 1:07:47OK, hold on, right? The next one we've got is
- 1:07:53Premier League winning teams. I hate football. 6 88 they're
- 1:08:09sure. He hasn't even been that many.
- 1:08:11Winning the Premier League 100%. It's like monopolized by like
- 1:08:153-4 teams but I I don't know how am I going to verify this.
- 1:08:21I mean, you can look it up when you're fighting if you want.
- 1:08:23All right, yeah, I'm calling call bullshit.
- 1:08:25Yeah, wait before you test. My yeah, basically, yeah.
- 1:08:30Hang on, hang. On I think I can do this.
- 1:08:33Because like, I can probably get, yeah, I don't know.
- 1:08:38And you're going to have to bear with us if you're not watching
- 1:08:40this on YouTube, but I'd highly recommend watching this on
- 1:08:42YouTube. I feel like I'm getting a bit of
- 1:08:44advantage here. I'll I'll change it to 50
- 1:08:46seconds because I am currently thinking about it.
- 1:08:50Yeah, OK, let's go whenever you're ready.
- 1:08:57OK, 321 go. Manchester United, Manchester
- 1:09:00City, Arsenal, Liverpool. Yeah, Chelsea.
- 1:09:08What are you on? I've lost count.
- 1:09:10I think that's fine on a multitask.
- 1:09:12Leicester. Oh this is so good.
- 1:09:18I think West Ham have won it. OK, they haven't.
- 1:09:22Oh. Shit, Leeds.
- 1:09:27Leeds City No. I was actually going to say this
- 1:09:30in my head. When you're you're done, you're
- 1:09:32done mate. You can't.
- 1:09:33You cannot even win this because you are wrong really.
- 1:09:37Yeah. How many have there been?
- 1:09:38Seven. Fuck yeah.
- 1:09:40And I've got six of them. Yeah.
- 1:09:45Damn who? Who else was it?
- 1:09:46I feel like it was an old school that used to be good, like
- 1:09:50Wimbledon or something like that.
- 1:09:51Blackburn Rovers. Fuck, I thought it became with
- 1:09:53AB. So man, you have won it 13
- 1:09:56times, City have won it 8 times, Chelsea 5, Arsenal 3, Liverpool
- 1:10:01twice, Rovers once and less the ones.
- 1:10:04Damn. OK, well I'm still.
- 1:10:06What did I say? I mean you.
- 1:10:08Win, you win, you're 3. Nil, you're 21, you're 21.
- 1:10:13OK, All right, let's reset this to one minute.
- 1:10:18OK, The do you want to? Have you got a category that you
- 1:10:21want to? Suggest you bring them.
- 1:10:22OK, you bring them. Fitness apparel brands.
- 1:10:26Oh, OK, well, 15. Bull ships right off.
- 1:10:34No way. The thing is, it's not.
- 1:10:36It's not even that I don't think you can name 15 is that.
- 1:10:38I think you get to 11 and storm. Yeah.
- 1:10:40OK, Ready. Go.
- 1:10:42Nike, Adidas, Puma, Reebok 247 represent rad Make apparel. 6.
- 1:10:54Oh no, Slazenger, I'm just taking ones from your body.
- 1:11:01Shoes on the shoes. Gym Shark, Sweaty Betty,
- 1:11:10Lululemon. What's that 10?
- 1:11:12Five more. I'm thinking. 25 seconds.
- 1:11:18What's that one? Phabletics, Sony, come on, come
- 1:11:24on, go skins, skins, whatever. I'm taking skins.
- 1:11:27Shot 10 seconds to get 30. Lads, come on, feel better than
- 1:11:34this. It's like, no, I quit, I give
- 1:11:39up. There's definitely some more in
- 1:11:42the in the brain somewhere. Didn't go for my protein.
- 1:11:45I thought that was another obvious, OK, we've got we could,
- 1:11:49we can do one more that I have noted, OK or we can do two more
- 1:11:53because I've kind of come up with another one.
- 1:11:55Let's do two more because I 100% know that no one's listening at
- 1:11:58this point. So this is more for
- 1:12:01entertainment, OK? I'm sorry I let you guys down on
- 1:12:04that one. Formula One drivers that have
- 1:12:07won a race. Oh, OK, Ever.
- 1:12:14Ever. Again, we're going to have to
- 1:12:16pull these up. I don't know.
- 1:12:21I thought my knowledge is very good.
- 1:12:26Can I say 8? I say 10.
- 1:12:33I was going to go in hot with 10 as well, so I'm going to, I'm
- 1:12:37going to go for 12. I guess there's like this is
- 1:12:43similar to the Premier League, like there's they can't be that
- 1:12:46many. Actually, I want to see you name
- 1:12:4812. All right?
- 1:12:49I think I can name 12. I think I can name more than
- 1:12:51that, but I, I want to see you do it right.
- 1:12:54I, I feel like it's safe for me to challenge you to do that and
- 1:12:57for me to do more. Here we go.
- 1:12:58Ready. Yeah, Vettel, Webber,
- 1:13:01Verstappen, Kimi Raikkonen, Great.
- 1:13:08David Coulthard. He's won Monaco twice.
- 1:13:11I found that out recently. Ayrton Senna, Damon Hill, Lewis
- 1:13:17Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Signs.
- 1:13:22Two more. Yeah.
- 1:13:23Pierre Gasly. Has he?
- 1:13:26Esteban Ocon. He won. 12 He's smashed it in
- 1:13:3132nd Keep going. No one knew that I was such a
- 1:13:34hardcore F1 fan. OK, that one's, that one's.
- 1:13:38That one is dedicated to my dad. He'll be so proud of me.
- 1:13:41He'll be so proud of me. OK.
- 1:13:44The last one, yeah. Olympic cities that have hosted
- 1:13:48or cities that have hosted the Olympic Games.
- 1:13:50Again, there can't be that many people think there's more than
- 1:13:52there are, OK? I might have.
- 1:13:55This is one that I thought, OK, so we'll have to check this.
- 1:13:57All right. How many are you saying?
- 1:14:01And do we open this up to Winter Olympic Games as well?
- 1:14:04No, OK, just Summer Olympics. I've been burned too many times
- 1:14:07in these quizzes by the Winter Olympics.
- 1:14:09My knowledge is so poor. Again, there can only be so
- 1:14:13many. I'm going to go in.
- 1:14:14I'll start with, I reckon, 10. That's 40 years worth of
- 1:14:21Olympics. Yeah.
- 1:14:23I mean, when you put it like that.
- 1:14:24I'm going to say bullshit, quite simply.
- 1:14:28OK, right, Where's my timer? Gone.
- 1:14:31I hate this. OK, Ready.
- 1:14:32Yeah. Go.
- 1:14:33London. Sydney, Beijing.
- 1:14:39Berlin. Los Angeles.
- 1:14:42Atlanta. Paris, Athens.
- 1:14:53That's like 32 years worth, yeah.
- 1:14:55You've actually done really well so far.
- 1:14:57Hang on, hang on. Hang on.
- 1:15:01There must have been another one in Australia.
- 1:15:06What? I say Sydney.
- 1:15:07Yeah. Melbourne.
- 1:15:11I don't know. That doesn't sound right.
- 1:15:16Not South Africa. That would have been a pluck.
- 1:15:20Stockholm. The Stockholm Olympics ringing a
- 1:15:23bell for some reason. Sure.
- 1:15:26What's that's? That's like a convoluted 10.
- 1:15:30Yeah, I'm pretty. OK, so your time has run out.
- 1:15:34OK, great. We'll check Stockholm.
- 1:15:37That for sure is right. It's going to be like.
- 1:15:40Olympic Games. Stockholm Olympics.
- 1:15:44Wow. The Summer Olympics were held in
- 1:15:46Stockholm, Sweden between the 6th of July and 22nd of July in
- 1:15:491912. Great knowledge.
- 1:15:52Yeah, it was. Huge and Mike was checking
- 1:15:54Melbourne. Melbourne.
- 1:15:56I don't think it's worth checking.
- 1:15:59Olympics and then, then. We'll check how many cities have
- 1:16:02actually hosted the Olympics. Melbourne Olympics 1956 I was
- 1:16:06also thinking you didn't say Barcelona.
- 1:16:07Oh, I said Madrid. Barcelona would make it.
- 1:16:10No, I don't even think I said Madrid.
- 1:16:13I don't think there's there been a Madrid Olympics.
- 1:16:16I don't know but I thought. I think, I don't think, I said
- 1:16:18Madrid. Run the tape.
- 1:16:19Yeah, I don't. Know how many How many Olympics
- 1:16:21cities have associated cities host?
- 1:16:25This list we don't have Hugh usually have you guys have grown
- 1:16:31accustomed to and loved having to help us out with.
- 1:16:34This isn't here today so I'm having to dual wield a
- 1:16:36microphone and list of cities. This is the content you all came
- 1:16:44for. God, I'm just staring at a
- 1:16:46screen of Wikipedia. There are loads.
- 1:16:49Oh really? So we've got.
- 1:16:50More than 12 Athens, Paris. Saint Louis, which actually you
- 1:16:55meant oh, no, the the Los Angeles is still there.
- 1:16:58London, Stockholm, Berlin, Antwerp, Paris.
- 1:17:03I've already said lots have been multiple.
- 1:17:05Amsterdam. Oh.
- 1:17:07Lake Placid. Was that the Winter Olympic
- 1:17:09Games? Maybe?
- 1:17:11Tokyo, Oh. Come on, Charles.
- 1:17:14That was a that was a lockdown. Yeah, eradicated that from my
- 1:17:17memory. Stockholm in Mexico City, OH,
- 1:17:23Munich. I'm better than this.
- 1:17:25Toronto is that winter as well. Some of these might be winter,
- 1:17:31this isn't. I'm looking at start to know
- 1:17:35Rio, forgot about Rio, Brisbane, Salt Lake City again.
- 1:17:41I think the Salt Lake City was Winter Olympics, but to be fair.
- 1:17:44I was like. You got very well.
- 1:17:45I got a fair for you. I'm not mad about it.
- 1:17:47I'm not mad about it. Yeah, you should be proud of
- 1:17:49that, and I think that means that you won.
- 1:17:51Overall, OK, I'll take that. Well, huge, yeah.
- 1:17:54So we can, we can do 21 questions or we can bring that
- 1:17:57back or the blind ranking that you brought last.
- 1:18:00That was fun. We can.
- 1:18:01Enjoy that one. The tick tock algorithm like
- 1:18:04that one as well. Tick tock algorithm.
- 1:18:05Wow. We both, we both were in that
- 1:18:08one. I was just going to glaze over
- 1:18:09it, but. Well guys, thank you very much
- 1:18:12for listening to this episode. Apologies for the slight hiatus.
- 1:18:16I think in theory now things will die down a little bit with
- 1:18:19the hierarchies and our race calendars being empty and we are
- 1:18:23talking about how we can grow this thing bigger and better.
- 1:18:25So if you guys have got suggestions, do let us know if
- 1:18:28you want to get involved somehow.
- 1:18:30Again, those DMS are open replies to the stories.
- 1:18:32Everything like that. Anything else from you?
- 1:18:36I think we got through way too much, way more than the people
- 1:18:39wanted to listen to. So again, give your ears a rest.
- 1:18:43You should made it this far. You should rest one day for
- 1:18:47every episode that you listen to.
- 1:18:50And we will be back very, very soon with another episode.
- 1:18:54So with that Charles, I'll see you soon you guys.
- 1:18:57I look forward to seeing you in the next episode.
