- 0:00Hi, welcome back to the Body Recomposition Revolution.
- 0:03This is Robin. And today I'm clearing up a huge
- 0:07misconception that many people, many women have, and that is
- 0:11that your workouts burn the majority of your calories,
- 0:16right? We've all thought that.
- 0:17I mean, who hasn't thought that the more cardio you do, the less
- 0:21food you eat, the harder you push, then you'll finally lose
- 0:25weight. Now here's something that was
- 0:27shocking for me, and that is your workouts are actually one
- 0:31of the smallest pieces of your metabolism.
- 0:35That's right, yes, your workouts.
- 0:37When you think about your metabolism and what is actually
- 0:40burning calories throughout the day, your workouts are truly one
- 0:45of the smallest pieces of your metabolism.
- 0:48And get this, the majority of the calories you burn every
- 0:52single day happen whether you workout or not.
- 0:54Let that sink in. The majority of the calories you
- 0:57burn on a daily basis will be burned whether you get to the
- 1:00gym or not. And in order to make that make
- 1:04sense, you have to understand TD EE, which just stands for total
- 1:09daily energy expenditure. And once you understand, like
- 1:14once you truly understand what total daily energy expenditure
- 1:18means, fat loss, body recomposition, it makes sense.
- 1:22It makes sense. And when something makes sense,
- 1:25it no longer feels as intimidating because you get it.
- 1:29You get what actually will spur your body to drop fat, what will
- 1:34enable your body to build muscle, what will get you where
- 1:38you want to go. And today we're covering the
- 1:40most basic foundation of fat loss of body recomposition, and
- 1:44that is TD EE. So what is TD EE?
- 1:49As I said, total daily energy expenditure.
- 1:52A better way for me to understand what that means is
- 1:55the amount of calories my body burns every single day.
- 1:59Not just from my workouts, not just from my steps, not from
- 2:02cardio, all of it combined. OK, so your TD EE, which means
- 2:07again, the amount of calories you're going to burn during the
- 2:10day is made-up of four components.
- 2:13Now I'm about to throw 4 acronyms at you.
- 2:15Don't be overwhelmed because we're going to briefly go over
- 2:18each one so that it makes sense. So right now we're just going
- 2:21over what is making up your TDE again, how many calories your
- 2:26body burns. And that is BMR, your NEAT, your
- 2:31TEF and your EAT. And understanding those four
- 2:36things is a game changer. It really it, it just makes fat
- 2:40loss make sense. OK, so we're going to start with
- 2:42BMR. We're starting with BMR because BMR makes up 60 to 70%
- 2:49of the calories you burn on a daily basis.
- 2:52So we're starting with BMRBMR means your basal metabolic rate.
- 2:57What does that mean? It just means the calorie, the
- 3:00calories your body burns by existing.
- 3:03If you get a custom macro microformulation from me, I
- 3:06refer to this as your couch calories.
- 3:08And it's just how I've mentally, I don't know, understood this
- 3:12concept as if I laid on the couch all day and just existed.
- 3:15These are the calories my body will burn, not with movement or
- 3:18any other factor besides the following.
- 3:21So breathing your heartbeat, your body producing hormones
- 3:25that actually expends calories, your brain function, your
- 3:29digestion, your organs functioning, your body
- 3:33temperature for some reason to me that was always kind of
- 3:36surprising like oh wow, my body burn needs calories to to
- 3:40survive yes, your body actually burns calories producing your
- 3:45hormones, making your brain function, having your organs
- 3:48work. All of those things need energy
- 3:51just to work now that's key to remember.
- 3:54So again, your BMR makes up 60 to 70% of the calories you burn
- 4:00just by existing. And This is why your metabolism
- 4:04matters so much. This is why building muscle
- 4:08matters so much. This is why a lot of my episodes
- 4:12lately have revolved around battling low energy availability
- 4:16and artificial maintenance calories and basically just
- 4:19trying to help women because I've gone through this myself
- 4:22the last year. Learn that you have to eat more,
- 4:25especially after age 35 when your hormone production is just
- 4:29a little bit flighty. You have to it's it's why crash
- 4:32dieting is a disaster. It's why GLP one rebound is
- 4:36horrific, especially for women, especially after age 35.
- 4:41But for everyone in this episode, we're just talking
- 4:44about women. So when you chronically under
- 4:47eat, your body adapts. Your movement subconsciously
- 4:52drops. You don't realize it, but it
- 4:53does. Your hormones adapt, your
- 4:56recovery worsens. So like in the mornings, maybe
- 5:00you're just feeling a little bit more sore, right?
- 5:02Maybe you just are inflamed. You have just this chronic
- 5:04puffiness. Your muscle loss increases, your
- 5:09metabolism has downshifted because you starved it.
- 5:13So now our BMR, maybe it used to be 1500.
- 5:17Now since we've starved it, oh, it's gotten down to 1200, right?
- 5:22Because your body had to adapt to the fact that you are not
- 5:25giving it enough fuel. So if you are not giving your
- 5:29body enough calories just to survive, your couch calories,
- 5:33your BMR and your metabolism actually downgrades, it adapts
- 5:38to that starvation. It burns less calories.
- 5:42It just by existing, right? It burns less because it has
- 5:45learned to adapt. I can't stress that enough.
- 5:48I know I'm repeating myself, but your body is so smart, so smart.
- 5:51I've, I've learned that over the last two years, my body is so
- 5:54smart and it has adjusted to starvation mode by all of these
- 5:59factors I listed. You know, all the things that
- 6:01I've been talking about, chronic fatigue, that recovery for me,
- 6:05horrendous. I haven't been able to build
- 6:06muscle. All the things that coincide
- 6:08with that I have experienced because I unknowingly was not
- 6:11eating enough. OK, so we're moving on to NEAT
- 6:15NEAT and this is this is the most the most underrated fat
- 6:19loss tool. So what NEAT stands for is non
- 6:23exercise activity thermogenesis, which is just all the movement
- 6:28that happens in your day outside of formal exercise like walking,
- 6:32cleaning, pacing around, fidgeting, standing, taking the
- 6:36stairs, chasing your kids, grocery shopping, yard work, you
- 6:40name it. If you're moving, that is your
- 6:43NEAT and people get shocked because NEAT can burn more
- 6:48calories than your actual workouts.
- 6:51So for sedentary people who might work at a desk job and not
- 6:56aren't moving a lot, they're NEAT might make up for 10 to 15%
- 7:00of your your metabolism. And for someone like me who's
- 7:04very highly active, I'm walking around, I'm moving, I'm
- 7:06cleaning, I'm fidgety, 3030 to 50% of my metabolism is affected
- 7:11by my NEAT. That's why two women who are the
- 7:15same age, the same height, the same weight, can have wildly
- 7:19different maintenance calories. So we went over BMR and how that
- 7:24makes up 60 to 70% of your total daily energy expenditure.
- 7:29Again, how many calories your body burns, your NEAT makes up
- 7:32for 15 to 30%. Those are big stats, none of
- 7:36which involve your workouts, mind you.
- 7:39And here's another shocking fact.
- 7:40When you slash your calories too hard, like if you're on a GLP
- 7:431:00 and you're just like I can't eat, you're neat
- 7:46subconsciously drops you are you are unconsciously moving less,
- 7:51you're sitting more, you're fidgeting less, you feel
- 7:54exhausted, you're body it. It's it's way of becoming more
- 7:59efficient to conserve its energy that it has.
- 8:01And that that is truly one of the reasons why women plateau
- 8:05despite the fact that they're eating nothing is because
- 8:08subconsciously they are moving way less.
- 8:12OK, acronym #4TE F. This ones not as widely known as
- 8:16BMR and you're neat. The thermic effect of food.
- 8:22OK, that makes up for about 8 to 10% of the calories you're
- 8:26burning throughout the day. TEF calories burned digesting
- 8:30food. He might be like what?
- 8:32What does that mean? Yes, your body actually burns
- 8:35calories just by digesting digesting food.
- 8:40And if you think about protein, carbs and fat, protein has the
- 8:44highest thermic effect. Think about that.
- 8:47The more protein you eat, the more energy your body uses just
- 8:52to digest it, the more calories you burn just to digest that
- 8:56protein. Proteins, thermic effect, 20 to
- 8:5930%, a bit of energy, Carbs 5 to 10, fat 0 to 3.
- 9:06Fat is so such a fickle girl. We should just do an episode on
- 9:09fat. But when women increase their
- 9:11protein, you stay fuller, it's more satiating.
- 9:13You preserve your muscle because protein is muscle sparing.
- 9:17You recover better. And the best part, as I just
- 9:20said, you burn more calories just by eating more protein.
- 9:25And the last section of what goes into our metabolism is eat,
- 9:30EAT, exercise, activity, thermogenesis, the the one area
- 9:34that everybody overestimates because your exercise only
- 9:38accounts for 5 to 15% of the of the calories you burn on a daily
- 9:43basis. That was disappointing to me.
- 9:45I was like, I work so hard and I feel like our workouts are what
- 9:49we all obsess over the most and it has pretty much the least
- 9:52impact on the amount of calories we burn a daily, daily basis.
- 9:55That's your lifting. Lifting does barely burns
- 9:58calories. That's not why we're lifting.
- 10:00We're lifting to build muscle because more muscle you have,
- 10:03the higher your basal metabolic rate is, right?
- 10:05Your workouts are lifting, cardio class is running.
- 10:08Those things all tie into your exercise activity thermogenesis.
- 10:13And again, they only make up 5 to 15% of the calories you burn
- 10:18during the day. This is why I always tell my
- 10:21clients you cannot out train a bad diet.
- 10:24You just can't. I did a figure competition a
- 10:27million years ago, 15 years, whenever it was, I have no idea
- 10:3015 years ago. And you get so in tune with your
- 10:34body it's crazy. I remember I was because I was
- 10:37doing a figure competition. You have to get down to a very
- 10:40unhealthy amount of body fat and I remember my coach always
- 10:46saying you cannot out train a bad diet, ABS are made in the
- 10:49kitchen blah blah blah. But I would eat, I remember
- 10:52eating a mini Snickers bar and I was really close to my show date
- 10:56so you could see muscle striations and if I ate too many
- 11:00carbs you could tell there was a little more softness in my
- 11:03physique. So I I ate a mini Snickers bar
- 11:07and I looked at the calories and I remember thinking, OK, I'll
- 11:11have to go on the treadmill and run for 1/2 hour, maybe it's 45,
- 11:15whatever it was. And I remember thinking OK and
- 11:18well now I've burned it off the next day I just didn't look the
- 11:22same way as I did the day before.
- 11:24This is a mini Snickers bar. But when you get down to such a
- 11:26low amount of body fat and you're doing something super
- 11:30intense like a figure competition, you can tell it's
- 11:34not healthy. You can tell though, and that
- 11:36Snickers bar affected my body, my water retention.
- 11:39It it even though I I thought I out trained the Snickers bar, I
- 11:43didn't. It had an impact on my body.
- 11:45So when people think that they can out train bad nutrition,
- 11:48maybe you eat fast food a couple times a day, you have a couple
- 11:53drinks, you know, and then you eat what you deemed to be
- 11:56healthy. But in your brain you're like,
- 11:59oh, I'll just do 2 hours of cardio that that's not going to
- 12:01work. It's truly not.
- 12:03I've tried to do the same thing before.
- 12:04It's not. You have to be dialed in on your
- 12:07nutrition. If your goal is to drop fat, you
- 12:10have to, you can't out train it. And that's, as I said, another
- 12:13huge reason why lifting is so imperative.
- 12:16It's not because it burns calories.
- 12:18It really doesn't. The point of lifting is to build
- 12:22muscle. When you have more muscle, your
- 12:25metabolism is higher. The more muscle you have, the
- 12:28higher your TDE is. Now why does all of this matter?
- 12:34It matters because I see women constantly under eating,
- 12:39constantly overtraining. I was one of them.
- 12:42I fall into that pattern all the time.
- 12:44But that is not the goal. If your goal is to look more
- 12:48toned, that means you want better body composition, which
- 12:51means less fat, more muscle. The goal is not to eat less.
- 12:57Or like how low can I get my calories?
- 12:59How small can I become the goal? Just to ask yourself, how
- 13:04healthy and metabolically active can I make my body while still
- 13:09rotating through the phases of fat loss and not damaging my
- 13:13hormones? And I know that sounds a little
- 13:16convoluted, but all it means is that you have to eat enough
- 13:20food. Food to build muscle so that
- 13:23your body maintains a healthy metabolism and you can continue
- 13:28to build muscle. And by doing that, your body's
- 13:31fat will reduce. It will The more muscle you
- 13:34have, the better quality food you're eating, the more protein
- 13:38you ingest. Let's, let's shoot for 30 to 40%
- 13:41of your total daily caloric intake being from protein.
- 13:44Your body composition will change.
- 13:48You just have to be consistently eating that protein,
- 13:51consistently hitting those weights.
- 13:53OK. It's not about cardio.
- 13:55It's not about eating less. It's about fueling the right way
- 13:59to build your body into. But you want it to be.
- 14:02Which 90% of the women who contact me is less fat, more
- 14:06muscle, The toned look. No, I had this awakening the,
- 14:10the last year that my body wasn't doing what I thought it
- 14:13should. And at first I thought, well,
- 14:15it's got to be my hormones. So I got my hormones tested and,
- 14:17yeah, they were all out of whack.
- 14:19But I was pretty young at the time.
- 14:20I think I was 36. I, I don't know, but they, they
- 14:22were out of whack. Why am I just this crazy early
- 14:26case of perimenopause? So I kind of proceeded forward
- 14:31with hormone friendly training. I started this business.
- 14:34I trained the way that women who are experiencing perimenopause
- 14:38symptoms should train. And my clients who were actually
- 14:41in perimenopause, menopause beyond, they trained that way
- 14:45and they were seeing great results.
- 14:46Why was I not? Well, because I was eating about
- 14:5118-19 hundred calories thinking this was maintenance.
- 14:54In reality, I was not at maintenance.
- 14:56I was chronically under eating and I just didn't know that.
- 15:00I didn't know that because I was, I don't know, delusional.
- 15:03As I've said, I have no idea, but the swim, the symptom list
- 15:07that I want you to refer to that might key you in as well.
- 15:11If you are under fueling, your body is constant fatigue, cold
- 15:14all the time, food obsession, poor sleep, plateaued fat loss,
- 15:18low libido, poor recovery. You're sore all the time, hair
- 15:21thinning, loss of menstrual cycle, anxiety around food,
- 15:25reduced workout performance, you're exhausted all the time.
- 15:28I'm not kidding you. I experienced probably 98% of
- 15:31these symptoms. I just listed it was to me a
- 15:34hormonal thing, but in reality it was because I had deprived my
- 15:38body so much it affected my hormones.
- 15:41I wasn't eating enough to even produce the correct amount of
- 15:45hormones that my body needed, right?
- 15:47My body had adapted to that low intake by downshifting the
- 15:52functions that I mentioned at the beginning of the episode.
- 15:55It downshifted my hormone production, my recovery,
- 15:58horrible sore all the time. I wasn't putting on any muscle.
- 16:01I wasn't experiencing any fat loss, that's for sure.
- 16:04I just didn't understand until I had an outside perspective from
- 16:09a professional who was like, well, let's actually look at how
- 16:11much activity you're doing. And that's when I learned, wow,
- 16:16I have really wreaked havoc on my total daily energy
- 16:19expenditure. I have not given my body nearly
- 16:22enough to function efficiently, which is what I teach all of my
- 16:27own clients. We have to give our body what it
- 16:29needs. I wasn't doing that.
- 16:31So over the last two months I have drastically increased my
- 16:34calories. Yes, there is some anguish
- 16:37overseeing the scale go up a bit, but I'm OK with it.
- 16:40I'm OK with it because I know I'm building a better body that
- 16:43will function more metabolically healthy in the in the long run.
- 16:47I'm actually putting on muscle now for the first time in a
- 16:50year. I'm putting on muscle.
- 16:52Yeah, I'm 5-6, sometimes 7 lbs heavier than I was last year.
- 16:57But that's OK because that's what's needed to get my body
- 17:00where I want it to go. It's a hard realization to have,
- 17:04and it's a hard action to move forward with giving your body
- 17:07what it needs. It really is.
- 17:09But it's absolutely necessary for body recomposition in the
- 17:11long run, especially after your mid 30s.
- 17:15OK, so last thing, how to increase your total daily energy
- 17:18expenditure? You're going to build muscle.
- 17:21You need to do that. Increase daily movement, move
- 17:23around more, clean more. Eat enough protein.
- 17:26Again, 30 to 40% of your daily caloric intake.
- 17:29I want that from protein. Improve your sleep, manage your
- 17:32stress. No more chronic crash dieting,
- 17:36no more under eating. Spend more time at maintenance.
- 17:39Maintenance should be about 8 months of your year.
- 17:41That's where I am right now. I'm going to move into a slight
- 17:43deficit soon because hello summer, but maintenance should
- 17:46be the majority of your year. Lastly, prioritize your
- 17:50recovery. Go to bed at a reasonable hour.
- 17:52Get that sleep. And I know it's easier said than
- 17:54done, but now that I'm eating enough, my recovery is
- 17:58exponentially better. It is.
- 17:59I just feel better as a whole and I hope you do too after you
- 18:04follow these steps and understand what goes into your
- 18:07body's total daily energy expenditure and closing your
- 18:11metabolism. It's not just your workouts.
- 18:13Remember that. It's not just your workouts.
- 18:15Your body is incredibly intelligent.
- 18:17It is constantly adapting to what you're giving it to keep
- 18:22you alive. And the women who see the best
- 18:24long term body recomposition results are not the women who
- 18:28starve themselves. They are the women who are
- 18:30fueling property. They're properly, they're
- 18:33focusing on building muscle, they're moving consistently,
- 18:36they recover well. They do all those things.
- 18:38They're playing the long game. OK, If you want help with your
