- 0:00Hey guys.
- 0:00Welcome back to the Becoming a Group Podcast.
- 0:03This is episode four.
- 0:05We're so glad that you're here.
- 0:08If you are back with us, welcome back.
- 0:10If you're new, welcome, welcome.
- 0:13We are really getting in the groove with this podcast and we're just
- 0:17loving sharing with you guys our life and our therapy knowledge
- 0:23and sparking curiosity with y'all.
- 0:25So, yeah, I'm Lauren Jackson.
- 0:28And I am Laura Deneen.
- 0:30Welcome.
- 0:31Yeah.
- 0:32We're two therapists in the Brentwood Tennessee area.
- 0:35We are in a group private practice.
- 0:37We work with eating disorders, grief, anxiety, depression-like transition.
- 0:43I.
- 0:43Everything in between, all through the lifespan.
- 0:46We adore our work and we are really falling in love with this platform as
- 0:51well to kind of expand where we get to share, share that work a little bit.
- 0:55So, yeah.
- 0:56Welcome.
- 0:56And here's episode four.
- 1:00Yeah.
- 1:01And so when we originally started this Becoming Anchored podcast, we
- 1:06wanted it to be a time, first and foremost, where we can share about
- 1:09our lived experiences as humans.
- 1:12And then we get to also share a little bit about the wisdom that
- 1:17we have from being therapists.
- 1:19And so we are really just here to do life with y'all.
- 1:22We really wanted this to be conversational and authentic and so.
- 1:26We're here to share about our experiences, both as a human and then as a therapist.
- 1:31So that's really the purpose of the Becoming Anchored podcast.
- 1:35We're gonna be giving y'all homework at the end of each episode, along with
- 1:37an affirmation for you to take with you
- 1:42a quick disclaimer.
- 1:43As always, this is not intended for therapy.
- 1:50By any means, the intention of this podcast is for
- 1:53informational purposes only.
- 1:54If you feel like you could benefit from therapy after listening to
- 1:59content, please feel free to either reach out to us if you're local
- 2:02or find something local to you.
- 2:20Today we are going to be talking about diet culture, particularly as we are
- 2:26about to go through a seasonal change.
- 2:28So I read a post somewhere and it was like, happy 400 seventy-fifth day of
- 2:32January, which I don't know if you feel that way, Lauren, but we've had quite
- 2:36a bit of weather here in Nashville from snow to rain, and it's just been,
- 2:40the snow was fun for like the first three days, but then it just was cold.
- 2:43And so anyway, I'm really excited about spring and summer coming.
- 2:46But with that, we acknowledge that.
- 2:49There's also an opportunity for more diet culture in our lives.
- 2:53And so here at Anchored we treat a lot of disordered eating,
- 2:57eating disorders, and even people that just wanna talk about their
- 3:00relationship with food or their body.
- 3:02So they may not have an eating disorder, but they want to improve their
- 3:06relationship with food and their bodies.
- 3:09They're ready to really be at peace with both of those things.
- 3:13And so we thought it might be helpful just to.
- 3:15Talk through diet culture and we hope that this can be pertinent whether or not
- 3:19you're listening during a seasonal change.
- 3:21Because I think this can hopefully be applicable no
- 3:23matter what time of year it is.
- 3:25But yeah, the summer months are coming and so I know with that comes more opportunity
- 3:32for diet culture messaging to show up.
- 3:34Mm-Hmm.
- 3:36When you think about diet culture, Lauren, what.
- 3:39I'm just curious, your take on this, like what is, are the
- 3:41first few words or phrases or things that come to mind for you?
- 3:46When I think of diet culture, like the, I'm a very like image person, so I, I, I
- 3:53learn best by like seeing, and I Processed best by like, kind of having images that.
- 4:02Help me express what is going on.
- 4:05And so the first, like the image that comes to mind when I think
- 4:09of diet culture is like a monster.
- 4:12Yeah.
- 4:12Yeah.
- 4:13So anyways, yeah, diet culture for me is really anything that is sold
- 4:23to you to try and convince you that.
- 4:28Who you are right now, where you're at right now, what you look like right now,
- 4:31what you weigh right now isn't good enough for the sake of making money like that.
- 4:35That is what diet culture feels like.
- 4:38Just a big marketing kind of scheme, if you will.
- 4:43And then within that, like that's maybe like a kind of big umbrella.
- 4:45And then within that, you know, there are just all kinds of messages and messaging
- 4:52that that diet culture spews at us.
- 4:55That again, continues with that narrative of where you're at right
- 5:00now, who you are right now, what you look like right now, what size you are,
- 5:05what shape you are, what you weigh.
- 5:07Is it good enough?
- 5:10Yeah, and it's interesting when I hear either I'm not good enough or
- 5:13something's not good enough, I hear like.
- 5:16Flavors of shame in that.
- 5:17So yeah, you know, just that, that implied message or explicit.
- 5:23So I talk to clients about both those two types of messaging.
- 5:26So implied is like, maybe it's not said out loud, so it's an implicit message,
- 5:30but you feel something is kind of off and it makes you feel a certain way.
- 5:34That can be an implied message versus more overt, explicit, said, out loud messaging.
- 5:40Diet culture is everywhere.
- 5:42Like Lauren said, it's just this idea that.
- 5:44Certain bodies are better than others, that there's something wrong with you
- 5:49or that you can always be in the process of trying to improve yourself or change
- 5:53something about the way you look.
- 5:55You guys have, might have heard of this, but the idea of like the thin
- 5:57ideal, so like putting a certain body elevated kind of on like a
- 6:02pedestal diet culture is also.
- 6:05Present when people face discrimination because of their bodies.
- 6:09So, you know, whether it's weight discrimination or fat phobia,
- 6:13diet culture is everywhere.
- 6:14I mean, I literally was in the grocery store for, to grab something quickly
- 6:20recently and already saw like a magazine for like, summer is coming.
- 6:24This actress lost.
- 6:25So X number of pounds and you know, I mean, it's in your face.
- 6:30Everywhere.
- 6:30It can be from seeing a magazine on in the checkout line to hearing your Uncle
- 6:36Joe talk about what new diet they're on and how maybe you should start that too.
- 6:40I mean, if you start to think about where it is in your life, it's truly everywhere.
- 6:46And for people that are trying to work on their relationships to food and trying
- 6:50to cultivate a more peaceful relationship with food and or their bodies, that
- 6:55can be really tricky to navigate.
- 6:57Mm-Hmm.
- 6:58Just this kind of implosion of messaging that feels Mm-Hmm.
- 7:02Never ending.
- 7:04So
- 7:05diet culture can, like Laura's saying, is always kind of in our phase, is
- 7:14pushed a lot in a lot of different areas and platforms, if you will.
- 7:21And it's also very sneaky and.
- 7:26And over the years has kind of taken on new names and has kind of morphed into
- 7:34some different looking packaging to, to make it seem like it's less harmful.
- 7:40Which for, for, you know, those of us who have high radar to diet culture
- 7:49don't buy into that and want to educate.
- 7:53People on the, the, that the sneakiness of it and that sneaky piece of diet
- 8:00culture can show up a lot in just kind of the everyday conversations we have with
- 8:04people and what maybe sound like kind of harmless comments that are made and.
- 8:14I think one of the, one of our hopes and purposes of this episode today and just
- 8:19kinda the content we wanna share with you guys and our lived experiences with
- 8:23this is to help to help you all kind of filter and discern and, and identify
- 8:34maybe even some of the more sneaky aspects of how diet culture shows up.
- 8:41Just kind of day to day and those conversations and the
- 8:45things we hear from people at the store, at the wherever we're at.
- 8:50This, this showed up for me not too long ago, you know, coming into the
- 8:58new year and then like we're talking about now that the season change going
- 9:03to spring and summer can elicit a.
- 9:07A big diet culture response of like getting beach body ready and
- 9:15kind of detoxing from the holiday, all the holiday food and right.
- 9:20Like those kinds of words are some of the sneaky ways that,
- 9:25that diet culture is less.
- 9:31Presented.
- 9:32And so anyways, back to my story.
- 9:35I was, I was in A, I was, I have like a little workout class and it
- 9:43was before the class had started, before the instructor came in.
- 9:47And there were some other ladies kinda standing near me.
- 9:50I was stretching,
- 9:52kind of just.
- 9:53Grounding myself,
- 9:54if you will.
- 9:55And this was not too long after Christmas.
- 9:58This was kind of early January, and I heard these two women talking.
- 10:05I wasn't, I certainly wasn't trying to eavesdrop, but they were just right there
- 10:08and I could just hear what I were saying.
- 10:10And one of the women, and, and, well, I'll get to this point in a
- 10:16second, but one of the women, she.
- 10:20Made some kind of comment about, I still have some Christmas to
- 10:26shut off or something like that.
- 10:28It was like language along those lines.
- 10:31And I, I had a bit of a reaction to it for a few different reasons,
- 10:37and I, I'll share those reasons.
- 10:39But, but my reaction, it was, it was less of like a, a grounded
- 10:44response and more of like.
- 10:46A reactive response.
- 10:48If I'm being like, just totally honest with you guys, I like had a pretty big
- 10:52eye roll and kind of like a pretty big, like, because I wanted them to hear
- 10:58me, like I wanted to make an impact and what, how functional that was.
- 11:02I don't know.
- 11:03But again, just being open, the reaction I had and then they went on and to,
- 11:12they talked about something else and.
- 11:14All the cookies and they're just there.
- 11:17And so you eat 'em all.
- 11:18And just again, pretty covert diet-cultury messaging that cookies are bad and
- 11:27too many is a bad thing and makes this bad thing happen and all of that.
- 11:33And so I had another big eye roll and then the class started
- 11:35and I was like, thank God.
- 11:37So that's just an example of like.
- 11:41How it just is there just all the time there and, yeah.
- 11:46Yeah.
- 11:47Yeah.
- 11:47And I think a couple of reasons why I had a response like that is because
- 11:52a, I go to these little classes a few times a week because they are
- 11:58just, it's, it's, it's self-care.
- 12:00For me, it's a time when I can step out of my house.
- 12:04I, it's a, it's a way that I found that I.
- 12:09Enjoy moving my body.
- 12:10There have been other scenes in my life where I've moved my body in a way that
- 12:14I didn't love, but I made myself do it anyways, and that was unhealthy for me.
- 12:19And so finding, being intentional about finding a way of moving my body that
- 12:24feels joyful, that feels invigorating, that feels good to me, has been.
- 12:37Really, really important in just my life journey.
- 12:41And, and so I was, I was, I was trying to get into this mindset of like, me
- 12:48time, self-care, being mindful, and then this like nonsense is happening in the
- 12:55peanut gallery and I'm like, come on.
- 12:58Right?
- 12:58So that was just annoying, like, you're messing up my vibe over here.
- 13:05These two women were very thin women.
- 13:08And that just felt unjust to me.
- 13:11Something about that felt unfair.
- 13:14And so I think the, those couple of reasons is what elicited
- 13:18my reaction and my response.
- 13:20And so that's part of what we're wanting to like, explore and be curious
- 13:23with you guys today about is okay, identifying diet culture, particularly
- 13:28the sneakiness of diet culture.
- 13:30And then.
- 13:31What all we need around around that.
- 13:35When it does show up for us, what do we, what are we feeling?
- 13:39What do we need?
- 13:40What support do we need?
- 13:41What do we do?
- 13:42I probably, I maybe could have done something differently.
- 13:45I did go home and share it with my husband, which is really helpful.
- 13:47And he just laughed and rolled his eyes and, you know and so that was
- 13:51just helpful to say it out loud.
- 13:52But that was just like a pretty recent experience I had.
- 13:55And I knew that this, we were gonna do an episode on, on diet
- 13:59culture, particularly like just in the new year and going into spring.
- 14:01And I was like, oh, this is gonna be a perfect example.
- 14:06Yeah.
- 14:06And I think you told me about it last week too.
- 14:08So yeah.
- 14:10Yeah.
- 14:10I mean, thank you for sharing and unfortunately, this kind of
- 14:13thing is just so common, right?
- 14:15And so, yeah.
- 14:16I mean, I can totally understand like you're busy and you
- 14:19wanted that space just to.
- 14:21Be in your kind of own little self-care bubble.
- 14:24So I totally get, I mean, it sounds like your response was frustration and
- 14:29maybe underneath that was some anger.
- 14:31Right?
- 14:31And just validating that that is an appropriate response to diet culture.
- 14:37Right.
- 14:37So if we think about the, the emotion itself of anger, I've had to really
- 14:43work on my relationship to anger, just like giving myself permission to.
- 14:47To feel it in a way that is healthy and like I'm able to
- 14:51like ride that emotional wave.
- 14:53And so I am here for it.
- 14:56And I'm glad that you let yourself feel that anger
- 14:58because I think it's so healthy.
- 15:00And then you did something about it, right?
- 15:02Like you told me about it, you told your husband about it.
- 15:05But yeah, if you think about what, what information that anger gives you, right?
- 15:09It's like you mentioned the word unjust, right?
- 15:12So something about this feels unjust or.
- 15:16You're crossing a boundary or when I think of anger, it's like, okay, is
- 15:21there something that needs to change?
- 15:24Right?
- 15:24So if I'm angry at someone, do I need to have a conversation with them?
- 15:28Or do I, you know, do I need to speak to the instructor at this class?
- 15:33And you know, I'm not saying that you need to do that, but it's like
- 15:35it informs us of what action state, what action steps we can take.
- 15:40And so I think sometimes with diet culture, it can feel like so much.
- 15:45I think a normal response too is shutting down to that, but remembering that we have
- 15:49agency in that and that anger can actually create agency for us to make changes.
- 15:55Totally.
- 15:55And I have to remember that, I have to remember that too because I'm like, oh
- 15:59my gosh, like tackling diet culture is a huge task, but every conversation that we
- 16:03have, every person that we kind of share about what diet culture is, is another.
- 16:10Formative moment towards a better culture and a better world that
- 16:15we're leaving for our children.
- 16:16Right.
- 16:16So I think sometimes I can be like, oh my gosh, like what is the point
- 16:19of trying to tackle diet culture?
- 16:20But yeah, I mean that anger can help guide us towards totally tackling
- 16:27this like beast that diet culture is back to your monster metaphor.
- 16:30Like I think of it like a beast, a monster.
- 16:33But yeah, I mean, like Lauren said, there's like so much advertising.
- 16:36It's, it is.
- 16:37A, a lot.
- 16:38And there's nothing wrong with making money, but making money
- 16:41off of people's insecurities is what diet culture does, right.
- 16:45And which is like, just like mind boggling to me.
- 16:48And so, yeah, I mean, as the seasons change, I know that a lot of our clients
- 16:52feel pressure to, to look a certain way.
- 16:55And so we're just here to say it's okay for you to opt out of that.
- 17:00But with that, like Lauren said, identifying what you need, so.
- 17:04I know we have a body image group starting soon.
- 17:07You know, so can you join a local group where you can talk about what's hard
- 17:12about the spring and summer months especially, or diet culture in general?
- 17:16Do you have your safe people that like, are like-minded and get it that
- 17:20you can return to after you have a negative experience with diet culture?
- 17:25That would be the my first recommendation.
- 17:27And then of course, a therapist and dietitian if that's available to you.
- 17:31You know, people that you can decide, I don't know what, what boundaries you need
- 17:35to set, whether it's with harmful people in your life or colleagues or friends
- 17:40that maybe are not in the same space in terms of working, you know, in their
- 17:45relationship with food or their bodies.
- 17:47But there's lots of different things that we can do to support ourselves,
- 17:52especially when the messages feel strong.
- 17:56Anything coming to mind for you?
- 17:59No, I was
- 17:59just curious if you've had a recent experience at all with diet
- 18:05culture, like encountering anything?
- 18:08Yeah.
- 18:08I mean,
- 18:09oh my
- 18:09gosh.
- 18:09I know you had missions at the grocery store, like seeing magazines,
- 18:11which, yeah, but I mean that's like every day all the time,
- 18:14right?
- 18:15Yeah.
- 18:15And like we can become a little bit numb to it, but it's like still problematic.
- 18:19Like I forget that I live in this bubble of like.
- 18:23Colleagues and friends who are like very much in the anti-diet space.
- 18:28And it, it can feel like I was talking about before, disheartening to try to
- 18:31like tackle it, but there's something about the magazines in the grocery
- 18:34store that just really makes me angry.
- 18:37I'm not sure what it is, but I mean, I think it's just the content of like, Hey,
- 18:41I'm checking out my food and then I, I don't know, but it just really bothers me.
- 18:45Yeah, I mean we were at a birthday party recently, so of course lots of kids'
- 18:49birthday parties and, one of the, the women there, her, I think her daughter
- 18:54was asking for a cookie and she was like, no, that's too much sugar and it could
- 19:00cause cancer or something like that.
- 19:02And I did the eye roll thing too.
- 19:05And I don't know these people.
- 19:07I, I, I think there's lots of different options around
- 19:11how we can handle it, right?
- 19:12Like.
- 19:13And I'm, I'm still thinking through what that's going to look like
- 19:17as Marianne gets older, right?
- 19:19Like, I don't love that she hears that now and she's not yet talking.
- 19:23I don't think she can fully digest like what that means.
- 19:26So I took the route of processing with my husband in the car and then, you know,
- 19:31I can get support from you from other people in my life that get it around this.
- 19:37Cookie supposedly causing cancer.
- 19:39That's a whole nother like episode, but Sure.
- 19:42Yeah.
- 19:42I mean, my reaction was one of just anger.
- 19:45I mean, if you think about a kid's birthday party, right?
- 19:48We're there to celebrate that little one's like precious life and it's just
- 19:52like you're, my first thought was like, okay, person, you're, you're ignorant
- 19:57and you're kind of ruining the moment.
- 20:00And your precious child.
- 20:04Is so vulnerable to that.
- 20:06Right?
- 20:06So if you think about like the amount of fear that's in that statement alone.
- 20:10So sugar causes cancer.
- 20:12If I'm a little child, like how do you think that that impacts me?
- 20:16Right?
- 20:16So I think sometimes we make the mistake of thinking that children
- 20:21are adults and they're not, and that they can think through things in a
- 20:25rational adult-like way when their sweet little brains are just not developed.
- 20:29And so that makes me angry too, is right like.
- 20:33This little girl like just wanted a cookie.
- 20:36And for the record, they were delicious.
- 20:38I had a couple.
- 20:39But it's like, okay, first of all, you don't like, you don't know that, that
- 20:44that's not actually factual information.
- 20:46You're saying something from someone that you found online and, and
- 20:50you're robbing this the moment in this birthday party that's supposed
- 20:56to be one of joy and celebration.
- 20:58And, and you're making it about fear and anxiety, and you're also making
- 21:04the assumption that your daughter knows how to cope with that type of statement
- 21:09when they just like totally don't.
- 21:11Yeah.
- 21:12So it's like so
- 21:13multifaceted, like so many like things happening internally when one silly
- 21:19little statement is made and one of the themes that I'm like hearing as we're
- 21:23both sharing some of our experiences.
- 21:25Is this theme of anger, like there's something that, and that word unjust
- 21:30keeps coming to mind, which as I'm, as, I'm just kind of putting some
- 21:35of my thoughts together around this.
- 21:37I feel like two, one of two things happens, happens when diet culture
- 21:44is in the, in the mix, whether it's a commercial or a magazine or a
- 21:49conversation that has, is being had.
- 21:52I feel like if we're kind of in that anti-diet space like you and I are and
- 21:57the profession we're in, or that's just like the place you're at in your life.
- 22:02It, we feel anger, like we feel, we feel angry and we, we feel
- 22:09a sense of like, what do I do?
- 22:12Like how do I change this?
- 22:14Or maybe, which I've been here or we maybe are, are.
- 22:20Perhaps, well, maybe three different things happen so that, or we're
- 22:25maybe still in kinda this vulnerable place of like perhaps internalizing
- 22:29it and like, oh, is this true?
- 22:30Like, do I need to do something different?
- 22:32Am I wrong?
- 22:32Am I, is, is what I'm doing bad?
- 22:36Or maybe we're, we're fully immersed in diet culture and, and we're on board and
- 22:42we agree and none of those things are.
- 22:45Wrong or bad or whatever.
- 22:47I think it can just be helpful to know where we kind of land when it comes to
- 22:52how, how we do respond or internalize or engage with the, the diet culture talk
- 22:59or language or whatever that's happening.
- 23:01Yeah.
- 23:02Yeah.
- 23:02And I think, I think we have options in that moment, right?
- 23:06Like, and we're not, we're not against people that are on diets.
- 23:11I.
- 23:12Like, we just wanna throw that out there.
- 23:14And we're not, we're against diet culture, right?
- 23:16And so Lauren and I are more aligned in terms of what we
- 23:20believe than maybe somebody who's in the thick of diet culture.
- 23:24We see that as a mechanism of avoidance for an emotional state
- 23:29that's happening internally, right?
- 23:31But we're not against the people.
- 23:33We are against diet culture, right?
- 23:35And so I think that's an important delineation to make.
- 23:38And then, yeah, I mean, we have options in those moments.
- 23:41At that birthday party I had worked a long week.
- 23:44It was my weekend.
- 23:45I didn't really have the capacity to address it.
- 23:48I most likely will not see this person again.
- 23:51And so they're not in my everyday life.
- 23:54I have done quite a bit of therapy around diet culture and how I want
- 23:59to show up when it's presented or in my face or whatever, and I
- 24:04chose not to respond, but that that was what I needed in that moment.
- 24:07I think I certainly have worked with clients that.
- 24:11You know, want to respond and want to assert themselves.
- 24:13And that's one way that they're working through their own recovery
- 24:17from living in a diet culture world.
- 24:19And I a hundred percent support them with that too.
- 24:22And I have certainly done that at times.
- 24:24And I think Lauren, you've even been there in moments when I've, I say it
- 24:27going toe to toe, but where I've gone a little bit more toe to toe with, with
- 24:31people in my life that maybe don't.
- 24:34Agree with all the, you know, health at every size and whatever, food
- 24:39freedom in the ways that I do.
- 24:41And so I certainly have done that.
- 24:43And neither response is good or bad.
- 24:45It's really more about what you need in that moment.
- 24:48But yeah, I mean, there's so much more we could say.
- 24:50I mean, as the seasons change, there's just times of vulnerability I feel
- 24:55like, that are, that are maybe amped up, if you will, throughout the year.
- 24:59And I know that's one of them.
- 25:01So we just really wanted to address it today.
- 25:04So just to give y'all some homework and just to, you know, real
- 25:07really quick before I give y'all homework, we will probably continue
- 25:10talking about this because there's a lot more that we could say.
- 25:14This is really just like a small little tidbit of information.
- 25:18If you haven't really heard about the concept of diet culture, we talk a lot
- 25:22about it in blog posts on our website.
- 25:24There's certainly lots of wonderful resources that we can
- 25:26put in the show notes around.
- 25:29Starting your journey to tackling diet culture.
- 25:34But yeah, y'all's homework is twofold.
- 25:36So number one, I want you to think about the ways in which diet
- 25:39culture shows up in your life.
- 25:41So like we talked about, maybe ways that are a little bit more obvious,
- 25:45and then ways that are less obvious, so more sneaky, like Lauren referenced.
- 25:49But think about how it shows up.
- 25:51That could be a conversation that you had.
- 25:53It could be a magazine, it could be.
- 25:55A TV show you watched, whatever.
- 25:56And then I want you to think about how you're going to respond to diet culture
- 26:00showing up and, and what your options are.
- 26:03So this is, I think one way that we can move through some of our emotions about
- 26:08diet culture is really giving ourselves options in terms of how we respond.
- 26:12So that's your homework from today's episode.
- 26:15Lauren has an affirmation for y'all.
- 26:17Yeah, so like
- 26:18Laura said, we have a lot of blog posts on our website addressing diet
- 26:23culture amongst many, many other topics.
- 26:25But I wanted to share a little quote from one of our most recent
- 26:31blog posts on opting out of diet culture in 2024, which is.
- 26:36Quite relevant, right?
- 26:37But actually, so our wonderful Laura wrote this, wrote this
- 26:40blog post, so go check it out.
- 26:42But the affirmation that she leaves us in this blog post says, I find
- 26:45strength in community and support recognizing that I'm not alone in
- 26:49my journey towards self-acceptance.
- 26:51So community support and you're not alone, feel very timely in
- 26:58this discussion about bi culture.
- 27:01Yeah, thanks for being here on the Becoming Anchored podcast.
- 27:04We will see you all next time.
- 27:06Bye guys.
