- 0:00What if waking up at 3:00 AM terrified isn't actually a sleep
- 0:04problem, It's your nervous system trying to tell you
- 0:06something? This week, we're talking to
- 0:09Christy Steinbach, a practitioner of traditional
- 0:11Chinese medicine and acupuncture with 35 years of experience,
- 0:15who's seeing an unprecedented wave of anxiety and insomnia hit
- 0:20her patients since the start of 2026.
- 0:23It's not just you. We also debrief my van life
- 0:26debut, complete with a naked coffee shop I definitely did not
- 0:29visit and a 91 sleep score I will never stop talking about.
- 0:33And the pit for pup update is here.
- 0:35People are buying pull up bars, equipment recommendations are
- 0:38flying. The bedding pool is almost open.
- 0:41So welcome to Not All Business, a podcast by two former CEO's
- 0:45who went from competitors to friends.
- 0:47I'm Blakely Graham and my Co host is Heather Cooper and we're
- 0:51joined by our producer Clay Cornell.
- 0:53Now let's get down to business. Hi, it's always so weird when we
- 1:06start. Well, it's double weird because
- 1:08all three of us have been on vacation.
- 1:10And so it's like, where have we been?
- 1:12Like we all like are in our chairs.
- 1:14We just got home last night and we're like.
- 1:17I know, and also it's weird because we didn't plan it that
- 1:20way. No, that is weird.
- 1:22Why? Isn't that weird?
- 1:24Where? Were you guys?
- 1:25I was. I came to Fort Collins to come
- 1:28hang out and you guys weren't even.
- 1:30Not Even so funny that you came to Colorado and we both.
- 1:35Were not here. I don't think it's funny.
- 1:38I think it's it was planned. I think you heard and then
- 1:42you're like, let's get out of here.
- 1:44Yeah, and he did it after I had already organized a dog sitter.
- 1:47Otherwise you could have just watched the dog for me.
- 1:49So thanks a lot for that. Oh, you guys, can I tell you
- 1:53quickly this? I wasn't planning to talk about
- 1:55this, but it's just. A sad dog story.
- 1:57Is it a dead dog story? I don't do well with those.
- 1:59It's just upfront. Is it a dead dog?
- 2:01Story not I have one of those, but I don't want to share that.
- 2:04That's really hard. No, this is a we were going on
- 2:09vacation, our dogs that are moved out of town or other dogs
- 2:13that are isn't available. And so I'm like, why don't use
- 2:16this opportunity to get our dogs trained and send them to boot
- 2:19camp? And so we've had a couple of
- 2:20friend use this woman and she's like 105 star reviews.
- 2:26I don't have any time to organize it.
- 2:28So I'm like, Scott, you just organize it, like just get it
- 2:30going. So he happily just like took
- 2:32instructions and organized the whole thing.
- 2:35I didn't really research her. And so we are, we like show up
- 2:40and we've got to get on a plane in like an hour.
- 2:42So there's not a lot of time. Dropping them off.
- 2:44Just dropping the puppies off. So we drop the puppies off.
- 2:48It's bad. It is so bad.
- 2:51She goes well, they obviously have an anxiety attachment.
- 2:57Super judgmental. That's why they're here.
- 3:00Wait but was this a boot camp or it was a dog?
- 3:04It's a boot camp, it's a dog boot camp.
- 3:05They're there for two weeks. And so she gave us this book.
- 3:08She goes, I want you to read this because these are the
- 3:10expectations when you get back. So she gave us a book.
- 3:14And so we're sitting in the airport club and there's this
- 3:16like 90 day plan where they have to be picked up in like this
- 3:19crash test dummy crate. They have to have two crates at
- 3:23home. They have to have Playstations.
- 3:25We're not allowed to greet them for the 1st 5 minutes when we
- 3:28come in the door. They can't sleep on the bed,
- 3:30They can't get on the furniture. They have to like remain in
- 3:33their crates at least an hour and a half a day.
- 3:36They can't sniff anything on the walk.
- 3:37They have to heal. And I'm like, I've never done
- 3:39any of that. Hold on, I was going to say
- 3:41these are not puppies. I mean, Stevie's a puppy, but
- 3:44the what's your other ones name? Jovi.
- 3:47Jovi offered Bon Jovi such a great name, but it's too late
- 3:51for Jovi. You can't teach an old dog new
- 3:53tricks. I feel like it's.
- 3:54Cool. For me, like this is not about
- 3:57the dogs, this is about me and her like seeing me like and
- 4:00seeing right through me and I just wasn't prepared.
- 4:04Like I knew like that's how dog trainers typically think about
- 4:08me. This has happened to me before.
- 4:10Is she? Mean is she like does she have
- 4:12like a like a she's? Actually quite lovely and nice
- 4:14and hopefully she'll become a listener appraiser, but I am
- 4:17terrified to pick the dogs up now.
- 4:19Terrified I. Thought you were dropping them
- 4:21off at like a kennel on your way out of town, but you're dropping
- 4:23off and like, hey, we want to pick these dogs up and they're
- 4:25going to be better. She is also a kennel but only if
- 4:29they get approved and the way they get approved is if we meet
- 4:33the 1st 90 days and can take them back and get tested for how
- 4:37well we did. Oh my God you are legit on a pip
- 4:40for a pup. Like you're in a whole different
- 4:41kind of pip. For a pup.
- 4:43A real PIP for your pups. Yeah.
- 4:46Oh my gosh. Speaking.
- 4:47Of PIP for pups, Did you like even do your PIP for a pup on
- 4:51vacation? Like catch us up?
- 4:53Absolutely. Not I thought about it, but I
- 4:56didn't have the stuff like I didn't.
- 4:57I just. I started.
- 5:00Well, you were there. Blakely started on the one part.
- 5:02We went together. We went to that networking
- 5:03event, which Blakely killed, by the way.
- 5:05Good job. You did a great job.
- 5:06She did a good job with the horseshoe.
- 5:07She opened up the circle. She didn't.
- 5:09You didn't need a wing woman at all.
- 5:11You you totally nailed it. That was great.
- 5:14Yeah, I didn't bring the right. I didn't know I didn't have the
- 5:18right broth. Let's be honest.
- 5:20I didn't have something. To stop you.
- 5:21Kinda. I mean you need some type of
- 5:24situation to do a push up. Well, actually that's true
- 5:28because I was trying to film her and.
- 5:30She was and she goes. You're not going to like.
- 5:31Can't get an angle without them. Boobs just.
- 5:35Falling down. OK, back off.
- 5:37All right, That's mean. OK.
- 5:40That's mean. It's a little mean, OK?
- 5:42We don't have to talk about them falling down.
- 5:44OK, It was grab the. Eye is 4.
- 5:47Like there's got to be an app where you're basically.
- 5:49Anti gravity. No, no.
- 5:51Then you basically you film yourself but then the AI.
- 5:55Changes. Yeah, it does the work.
- 5:58Right. Again, we are not using AI on
- 6:01this podcast. I just want for images.
- 6:04I know until Clay let's me fix my neck and until that happens,
- 6:08no one gets AI. Until that happens.
- 6:11Until that happens, you're putting your.
- 6:13Gravity is going to do its job. Is what is what happens.
- 6:16What happens? And that clip didn't make it,
- 6:18but I did. I got home and I did it.
- 6:21I did it. I posted it.
- 6:22It was very vulnerable and it's I don't really care.
- 6:28It's fun actually. And pleasantly, to my surprise,
- 6:33people are like, I'm in. I know they're following along.
- 6:36I love it. But they're like doing it too.
- 6:39They're like, I got text like okay, which pull up bar did you
- 6:42buy? I'm texting that out.
- 6:44What kind of really and? People are asking for equipment
- 6:46recommendations, yes. That and it makes me feel not
- 6:50alone and it's cool because it's only like 5-10 minutes a day,
- 6:54even just three times a week. So there's, it's not like a huge
- 6:57fitness transformation, like intense thing, but it's like,
- 7:00Hey, I, this is one thing I want to do.
- 7:02I want to be able to get a real push up.
- 7:04I want to be able to get a real pull up.
- 7:07Side note, my husband, so we installed the pull up bar of the
- 7:11door. It's just a you, if you put it
- 7:12up, take it down. It's not, you know, full time
- 7:16freaking jumps on it. Don't even I know what you're
- 7:21just say. Yeah, well, it was a chin up, to
- 7:24be clear. I was like, turn your hands
- 7:25around. Anybody can do a chin up.
- 7:27And then I tried to do a chin up.
- 7:28I was like, if you can do it, maybe I can do it anyway.
- 7:32I couldn't do that either. But he was as surprised as
- 7:34anybody, which almost made it worse because he's like, I've
- 7:37never tried this, let me hop on it and just fucking do it
- 7:40immediately. So I was like, get down.
- 7:43This is not your bar. This is not your area.
- 7:46Go find somewhere else to practice.
- 7:49Should we be putting like wagers on like when you're going to get
- 7:53your first push up, when you're going to get your first pull up?
- 7:55Like should we open up a betting pool?
- 7:56You can. I was living some news article
- 7:59or podcast on our road trip and you can bet on anything now.
- 8:04Really. Weirdest phenomena I had no idea
- 8:07you can wear like what side part someone is going to have at like
- 8:12a Olympic race. I don't whatever.
- 8:14Like any little phenomena, you can bet on it.
- 8:16Yes, we should. Just don't tell me because it's
- 8:20going to make me feel really bad.
- 8:22I am working on getting our community set up right now and
- 8:25so I will see if I can put up a betting board.
- 8:28Not with real money though. I don't think that's right, but
- 8:30I'm. Trying to cash in on this.
- 8:32So if you could open that up, that would be great.
- 8:34I'm trying to get a little side thing going.
- 8:36All right, Venmo Blakely at Blakely Dash Graham Dash 76, is
- 8:41that it? That is not that's not it.
- 8:43What would the 76 be for? The year you were born, I was
- 8:47trying to be nice. Yeah, that was.
- 8:54Nice. Well, I was born in 74, so I
- 8:56figured you're a couple years older than me, but I was giving
- 8:59you, making you, making you younger.
- 9:01Thanks. OK, Speaking of younger, I want
- 9:05to hear more about your van down by the river that you're living
- 9:10in. Yeah.
- 9:13So we have two dogs and my husband wants to travel when
- 9:17we're empty nesters, which is coming up real soon.
- 9:19So we bought a van and we bought the van and I was a little like,
- 9:23do we need a van? Like am I?
- 9:26I like to camp, but is this really going to be a full time
- 9:29thing? Well, we bought a van.
- 9:32We had an outfitted in Costa Mesa, like Southern California,
- 9:35Orange County, and we went to pick up the van and holy shit,
- 9:39you guys, this is the coolest van.
- 9:42It is so awesome. And we took a week, we went from
- 9:46Costa Mesa and just drove down the southern route because we
- 9:50were chasing a storm essentially.
- 9:53So we were just trying to give ourselves some distance.
- 9:55I. Always wanted to do that storm
- 9:57chaser. That's not really.
- 9:59I was like. That's the point of start
- 10:02chasing. It's to find the tornado.
- 10:04Blakely. OK, sorry.
- 10:05Go ahead. No, no, we went through some
- 10:08really interesting towns and kind of like we didn't go
- 10:11through Palm Springs. We went through India, which is
- 10:14where Coachella is. And we went by the Salton Sea,
- 10:17which is like one of the most toxic seas in the United States.
- 10:20Like I didn't know about it until like Scott's, like, let's
- 10:23go look it out. And I'm reading And they're
- 10:24like, get out. Danger, danger.
- 10:26It's like so toxic. I'm like, go faster.
- 10:29And then we went through Arizona and we went through the craziest
- 10:33Border Patrol, which I don't know, just given everything
- 10:36that's going on in our world. It was just, it felt very
- 10:39uncomfortable. What a.
- 10:42Great adventure for your first trip in.
- 10:44Japan sounds so cool. Well, she sent me this picture
- 10:48and it looked like I did because it was this desert against this
- 10:53crazy blue sky with just a bit of the sun coming up on the
- 10:56horizon or down, I don't know. But it was gorgeous and it
- 10:59looked like. Tatooine.
- 11:01Tatooine. Tatooine.
- 11:03And that is where Tatooine was filmed.
- 11:06I think it's yeah. What do you mean you didn't know
- 11:07what that was? I didn't know what it was.
- 11:12You don't know, and you still not know it.
- 11:14I know now because because I had to ask my husband and he's a
- 11:19nerd and. Thank you goodness for neck.
- 11:21Thank goodness. It's like, not only is it
- 11:23Tatooine, but it's where it's where like the Jabba the Hutt,
- 11:27like Land Cruiser with the big pit was found.
- 11:30And I do love Star Wars. It's a Star Wars.
- 11:32It's a city in Star Wars. And there's also.
- 11:35A planet. A planet.
- 11:37It's a planet, but they also have a drink.
- 11:39I learned when I googled it. I don't know.
- 11:42It's called a Tatooine sunset, and it's a drink.
- 11:46So well, let me tell you, Tatooine culture in Arizona,
- 11:50actually that's in California is really interesting.
- 11:52Like it's RV toys culture. And then we went through another
- 11:56strange town and we were going to camp there because it's
- 11:58supposedly like the RV like meet up of the world and they do like
- 12:04rock treating and crystal trading.
- 12:06Oh. Cool.
- 12:08Yeah. Did you get your palm red?
- 12:10No, I didn't stay there. Anybody do?
- 12:14Any tattooing while you were? There any tattooing and
- 12:16tattooing that was good one clay.
- 12:18There was we are looking for a coffee shop and there it said go
- 12:23the best coffee is in the magic circle.
- 12:26And like it's in this RV boondocking.
- 12:28Like think of like a desert with just RV's everywhere.
- 12:31I'm like, OK, the Magic Circle coffee.
- 12:33And then I like, look at the reviews and it says, well, when
- 12:36the RV door is open, the coffee's always brewing.
- 12:39I'm like, OK, kind of interesting.
- 12:42And then I look closer at the mugs and every mug has a naked
- 12:46person on it. And I realized, did you find
- 12:49yourself? Circle is like the naked area of
- 12:53the rocketry now. What'd you do?
- 12:56Did Scott show off his triceps in a little?
- 12:58More so, we like booked a spot in the KOA.
- 13:04This was supposed to be a romantic Valentine's Day trip,
- 13:07and you walked right into the magic circle and walked right.
- 13:10Out I guys, I'm so new and nervous.
- 13:13I'm a loser about this kind of stuff anyway.
- 13:15Years you got to be in a van to be like.
- 13:19Here's the thing, our our van is too new and too pretty, so just
- 13:25kind of puts us back. When I get all naked, all you're
- 13:27naked on it. Privilege sitting duck, like we
- 13:29got to wait to get some dents and Dings and dust and like, so
- 13:33like in few years I'll go back and go to the Naked coffee shop,
- 13:37but I'm going to bet. I'm going to put on our new
- 13:39bedding market that it's going to take maybe 18 months before
- 13:42the 1st naked person sits down on your beautiful van and then
- 13:47after that, I don't know. We're not betting that.
- 13:51After that, there's nothing but white crusty sweaters.
- 13:54We're not betting that. Magic circles all over your van.
- 14:01I don't even know what that means.
- 14:02But it's, it's OK, we'll take that offline.
- 14:05OK, But what is the bed like? Is it nice the?
- 14:08Bed OK, so I was very nervous about the bed because I am very
- 14:14nervous about sleep like I'm one of those people I wear the
- 14:17Garmin watch. I like track my sleep score.
- 14:20I don't know if you've ever read the book Why We Sleep by Matthew
- 14:23Walker, but don't read it you. Mentioned this book before I
- 14:26think on the show. Have I It is the scariest book
- 14:31I've ever read. Like it's horrible.
- 14:32It just makes you realize like for every second you don't
- 14:36sleep, like a year is shaved off your life.
- 14:38And it's nothing like for an anxiety right in person like me,
- 14:41it's so bad. Like I'm going to die tomorrow,
- 14:44probably, according to Matthew Walker.
- 14:46Put that on that the bed thing. Sorry, go.
- 14:49Ahead let's Ned. I don't want to die tomorrow
- 14:51regardless. I was nervous about the van.
- 14:54I got the best sleep score of my entire watch life ever.
- 15:02Wow. And I got the worst sleep score,
- 15:06so kind of interesting, but the best sleep score it's I think I
- 15:10can attribute to its total blackout.
- 15:13So we've got these like really cool shades and it's like a
- 15:16micro climate. So we can keep it really cold,
- 15:19but we can also program the heater to like kick on at like
- 15:23the end to warm up like before you get out of bed.
- 15:26And so like you sleep cold and it's lovely.
- 15:29And then like later on it just becomes this like warm toasty
- 15:33cocoon. I don't know, I got a 91.
- 15:35I've never heard of that. Do people get 90 ones on their
- 15:37sleep watches? I don't know.
- 15:38I. Don't know, I never did a sleep
- 15:40watch but but then another. So was the 50 also in the van or
- 15:44was it where the van was parked? Is 100% because the last day we
- 15:50got lazy. And so we're like, let's just
- 15:52eat something where you can just add water because all we had was
- 15:55like a hot water heater and a fridge.
- 15:58But we weren't cooking right. So we went to the store.
- 16:01Yeah. And so we got cups and noodles.
- 16:03And we saw these cups and noodles that our kids get all
- 16:05the time. And I'm like, oh, these must be
- 16:07like, really good cups and noodles.
- 16:09They're called bold decks. Have you guys heard of these?
- 16:11No, it's like a big bold deck of noodles.
- 16:15One's pink. I got carbon and one is like
- 16:18blue and it was like the spite whatever spicy ramen or
- 16:21something. So we like pour our water in and
- 16:24like within two bites. Scott, who eats the spiciest
- 16:28food in the world, was like crying.
- 16:30He's like, I don't, I don't think I could finish this.
- 16:32I'm like, what? It's all the food we have.
- 16:34And I'm like, well, I got carbonara and we didn't know,
- 16:37but there's two packets. There's a flavor packet and the
- 16:39spicy packet. And we thought the spicy packet
- 16:42was hoi sun sauce. So we were like pouring the
- 16:44whole packet I We ate an entire bag of tortilla chips between
- 16:52the two of us to. Soak.
- 16:54Up this spice. I've never been in so much pain
- 16:57in my life. It was awful.
- 16:59I got to imagine you, I mean even on the like the ramen
- 17:04packets, they say like don't pour the whole packet in because
- 17:08that's how you adjust the sodium.
- 17:10But if you check the back of the packet it's like it's enough
- 17:13salt for like 6 people for like four days.
- 17:16So you probably ate like a triple salt bomb and then
- 17:21through. You were probably so bloated and
- 17:23like puffy I bet. No, so I got I get heartburn.
- 17:27It's so hard had and I don't have any of my medicines with
- 17:31me. I had the worst heartburn of my
- 17:33entire life. I was dying the whole night.
- 17:36But like you guys, it was the food.
- 17:38It's the only food we had is like this bag of chips and the
- 17:40bold Axe. You better get used to it
- 17:42because this is your new van life.
- 17:44I mean this is. The van down by the river.
- 17:46It sounds like a nice van, though.
- 17:47OK, I, I got to, I got to move us because I just can't think of
- 17:52any story that's teeing us up more perfectly for this guest.
- 17:56I we yeah. We've got someone coming on
- 18:01today that can pretty much address, I think every single
- 18:05one of these issues that you're dealing with between the sleep
- 18:07and the chronic stress. I don't know about the, the nude
- 18:12colony part. Yeah.
- 18:13We'll have to see her. Take on that, but you never
- 18:15know. I think it's time we bring, we
- 18:17bring on. Christy, let's welcome her.
- 18:20Hi Christy. You know how every industry has
- 18:27that one relationship where both sides need each other, but the
- 18:31communication is just broken? In construction, that's general
- 18:35contractors and subcontractors. The invoices get lost, the
- 18:39budgets blow up, and nobody's on the same page.
- 18:42Well, Trade Agent fixes that. It's the AI layer that sits
- 18:46between GCS and Subs and keeps the whole thing from falling
- 18:51apart. Invoices, budgets, payments
- 18:54handled like magic. No more fights, no more finger
- 18:57pointing, and everyone can get back to actual building.
- 19:02Check it out at the Trade agent.com.
- 19:10Welcome to the show. Welcome to Not on Business.
- 19:14I'm glad to have you on I'm. Howling in the background
- 19:17listening to you all. Like literally howling.
- 19:19Tears are in my eyes, so hilarious.
- 19:23I'm really excited to know how you can help either.
- 19:27I don't know if Heather was insinuating you can help my
- 19:29heartburn with the baldeck or my chronic stress or my sleep
- 19:33anxiety, but I'll take all the help I can get so.
- 19:37Yeah, the baldeck. Simple.
- 19:39Don't eat that. You know the doctor is in people
- 19:47the doctor is in she's here Oh man.
- 19:52So Christy, you have I've thankfully known you for several
- 19:56years now here and just gotten to watch your professional
- 20:00career develop benefited a lot from that myself and then seeing
- 20:04others. We've also played tennis
- 20:06together and I've seen you kind of on the court and man, she's.
- 20:11Things get serious if you're playing Christy Seinbach.
- 20:13And wait, did you not convert to pickleball?
- 20:16Are you still trying into a tennis player?
- 20:19No, there's no pickleball. I did take a lesson.
- 20:26I did laugh. I.
- 20:27Love a curist? I bought a paddle, but I just
- 20:31can't like, make the jump the leap into pickleball when
- 20:35they're tennis, I. Haven't tried it yet either.
- 20:37It feels, it kind of feels like giving up.
- 20:39I don't want people to hate me for saying that, but it, it just
- 20:41feels like, it feels like I'm giving up on my body and my, you
- 20:45know, potential, I guess. Yeah.
- 20:49Do you I also? Think it's lowering my real
- 20:51estate value because we sleep our sleep.
- 20:54We live right next to pickleball courts, and so when we're
- 20:56sleeping at 6:00 AM, it's like. Click, click, click, click,
- 21:00click, click. Like just They're about to start
- 21:03at 6:00 AM. Oh, they start early.
- 21:06Yeah, they. Cold out there in the.
- 21:08Winter kind of person. It's a whole brigade and they
- 21:11park all in front of our house and they come up with these like
- 21:13steel brooms and shovels and they sweep the snow off the
- 21:17court and like, dry it. They're so they're a lot.
- 21:22Yeah, yeah. But I do respect.
- 21:25I do respect people finding something that gets them out,
- 21:28gets them active, right. I mean, whatever floats.
- 21:31That way, if it's fun and you can do it and your body's
- 21:34cooperating, Yeah, it's way better than what I'm doing right
- 21:38now, which is nothing other than.
- 21:39That is not true. Like let's talk about those pull
- 21:42ups. Yeah.
- 21:44Thank you, Christy. So not true.
- 21:47And also the other thing Heather didn't say is that for seven
- 21:50years or eight years maybe there were a group of us that we did
- 21:53Pilates together like every Wednesday morning we were in the
- 21:56Pilates studio. That's true.
- 21:58Pilates together so and Heather's excellent at Pilates
- 22:00so. Oh.
- 22:01Thank you, I believe. It don't minimize what you're up
- 22:04to your girlfriend. Thank you, Christy.
- 22:06I appreciate that. Advice #1.
- 22:08I mean, I'm good at the legs. I've always said a very strong
- 22:11legs, but it's the arms were always a difficulty anyway.
- 22:13But back to the reason why, the reason why we're doing that, the
- 22:16community, the, the working out, the finding better ways to
- 22:20sleep. Christy, I read something you've
- 22:22wrote recently on your sub stack, which is so good and
- 22:25everybody we will put put that in it's red Dragon Speaks.
- 22:28Is the sub stack too or is that red?
- 22:29Dragon writes the. Dragon.
- 22:31Writes is the is the blog and then Red Dragon Speaks is the
- 22:36podcast, which I have not officially hard launched yet.
- 22:40OK, well here's the place to do it.
- 22:41Let me tell you, we're going to be people are going to be
- 22:43looking it up after today's episode.
- 22:46You have ATCM practice, which is traditional Chinese medicine in
- 22:51acupuncture. You've built the fantastic
- 22:53practice over the years and you've got all different people
- 22:56coming from all different walks of of life and kind of bringing
- 22:59everything with them. So as you're visiting with your
- 23:02clients and treating them, what, what types of things are you
- 23:05seeing? What kind of responses are you
- 23:06seeing to current agitation and overwhelming and anxiety that
- 23:12we're experiencing in our world right now?
- 23:14Tell us a little bit about that. Yeah, I'd love to because I
- 23:17think this is a really pressing issue for people as just as a
- 23:22small amount of background, I've been practicing for just about
- 23:2535 years. Wow.
- 23:27And, and in these, in this last year, year and a half, and
- 23:33especially since the 1st of 2026, I've seen an unprecedented
- 23:39amount of clients coming in complaining about one thing and
- 23:43that's anxiety and insomnia. I have never seen or had such an
- 23:47onslaught of it. And I also noticed for myself at
- 23:53the beginning of the year, I started having nightmares.
- 23:57Me too. I typically never have
- 23:59nightmares. I'm just, I just isn't my thing.
- 24:01I sleep pretty well. Sorry.
- 24:03Nightmares have started waking up a lot.
- 24:06I you know, I was, I'm still, I'm a big meditator.
- 24:09I was meditating like none of my techniques.
- 24:12The usual things I would go to if my spirit was upset, which it
- 24:15wasn't, were working. And then I noticed, well, oh,
- 24:20here come my patients and they're saying the same thing.
- 24:24So I'm starting to dig in a little bit deeper with this and
- 24:28I've come to this conclusion because of the instability that
- 24:32we're experiencing globally. I mean, it's not just, you know,
- 24:38in in your little microcosm, you may be having upsets and that,
- 24:42you know, that could be happening.
- 24:44But then if you just keep going outward globally, it we've never
- 24:48seen anything like this and. You're right.
- 24:51At the root of it, people are really scared now, like we've
- 24:54tipped over into to fear the real fear.
- 24:58And then what's happening is our nervous systems can't settle.
- 25:04And at night, it's kind of like, you know, when you sleep, you're
- 25:08the veil gets a little thinner, right?
- 25:10It's a little thinner at night when you sleep versus the day
- 25:13when you're in your world and you're, you know, everything's
- 25:15pretty solid and real. Seems pretty solid and real.
- 25:17But at night, you know, everything's just a little more
- 25:21permeable. Can we talk about that?
- 25:23Because I this whole thing about like waking up at 3:00 in the
- 25:27morning. I mean, you hear it all the
- 25:28time, movies and things. But like that really does.
- 25:30It's happened to me almost every night.
- 25:31And it's not just to go pee. I mean, I do go pee because I'm
- 25:34up anyway, but it's but because I'm awake, but it's not what's
- 25:37waking me up. It is this like moment and it
- 25:40things do feel, I don't know, sometimes I feel a little more
- 25:42scared. Sometimes it's just it does feel
- 25:44thinner. What does that mean?
- 25:47So I think it means several things.
- 25:50I think it's for some people they are picking up on the
- 25:53collective. I think there's no doubt about
- 25:55that. People are really sensitive.
- 25:57What do you? Mean the collective.
- 25:59The collective energy that's happening globally, I do think
- 26:02people pick up on that. And, and because the veil's a
- 26:05little thinner, our guard isn't really up at night.
- 26:07We, we're, it, we feel it. And then I also think for some,
- 26:12and, and then, you know, this isn't just one or, or, or could
- 26:16be, yes, and one more, but it could be chemical, right?
- 26:20So for example, Blake lady, here's your example of eating
- 26:24those spicy noodles at night that caused a physiological
- 26:27chemical reaction in you that was real and literal and burned
- 26:33your esophagus and probably your stomach.
- 26:35You know, where your spirit can't settle?
- 26:37It's supposed to anchor itself and it can't because the
- 26:40spiciness of the chemicals are making everything flow their
- 26:44opposite direction, which you. Described as spirits.
- 26:47I'm so sorry. So that's a Physiology, you
- 26:52know, that really different spirits.
- 26:54So there's a physiological explanation as well, right?
- 26:57And then for women, especially perimenopausal or menopausal
- 27:00women, we see a lot of disruption in sleep because of
- 27:04hormonal changes. That's a huge thing as well.
- 27:07So between the ages of say 42 and 58, that's a pretty good
- 27:12window for hormonal imbalances also disrupting sleep.
- 27:17So there are a lot of variables. The variable I'm focused in on
- 27:20right now is the unprecedented amount of fear that people seem
- 27:25to be picking up on in our global climate and, and how
- 27:30we're getting reactive instead of responsive.
- 27:33And Heather, you and I had had a small conversation a few a week
- 27:39ago or so ago about how I'm thinking about this in terms of
- 27:43pause, feel and decide. There's three things.
- 27:46Just pause when you're feeling reactive because you don't want
- 27:50to make any kinds of decisions when you're reactive, right?
- 27:53So pause. So just take a moment, take a
- 27:55breath, then feel into your body.
- 28:01Because we're used to making a lot of cognitive decisions.
- 28:05So we think we're in the middle of the night, the veil's a
- 28:07little thinner. We're starting to panic because
- 28:09we can't sleep right. Pause, take a breath right and
- 28:16then come back into your body. Like feel literally take a
- 28:19breath and feel your diaphragm lift, feel your thighs, see if
- 28:24you can feel your feet. What does your back feel like on
- 28:28the on the bed or, or the, you know, the van floor you're
- 28:33laying on? Oh no, we.
- 28:36Had a bed. You're just really and in doing
- 28:43that, your, your nervous system can start to settle this fight
- 28:48or flight reflex that we're chronically in now can start to
- 28:52settle a little bit. So is that taking you're, you're
- 28:56saying the reactive versus we were talking about being aligned
- 29:00with with what's happening, being reactive to what's
- 29:03happening. And so is that talk a little bit
- 29:05more about that distinction because I hear what you're
- 29:07saying is that's kind of the response.
- 29:09Like if you're seeing that you're in reactive, like let's
- 29:12go to that pause. How do I capture that moment?
- 29:15How do I know whether I'm in reaction mode to everything
- 29:18around me? Sure, great question.
- 29:20So at 3:00 in the morning when you wake up and you're like, uh
- 29:22oh, I feel scared or uh oh, why am I awake?
- 29:24Or any uh oh. When you wake up or you wake up
- 29:27from a bad dream, you're you're already in reactive brain,
- 29:29you're already in it. OK.
- 29:33OK. You're there.
- 29:34Versus what? Sleeping through the night.
- 29:37Yeah. Or versus waking up in your
- 29:39bladder is just actually full, right?
- 29:41And you feel peaceful and so you go to the restroom and you come
- 29:45back and you go back to sleep. There's no nervous system
- 29:48activation there, right? Right, right.
- 29:51It's just physiological at that point and so is it.
- 29:54Am I looking, So if I'm waking up and let's say I've had a
- 29:57nightmare, is it like the racing?
- 29:59Cause for me it'll be like they're racing kind of thoughts
- 30:02or pushing down really negative thoughts or sometimes horrible
- 30:05memories or just really terrible things popping up.
- 30:07Fear is a big one. Recognizing when I'm in that
- 30:11mind, is that a mind space? Am I in my mind at that point?
- 30:16Versus So your mind is involved and your body's involved, and we
- 30:22don't care really which came first.
- 30:24It's chicken and egg. OK.
- 30:26What we need is for the system to settle like we don't care if
- 30:30your mind started it or your body started it, really, right
- 30:34in this situation, right? So pause and just notice like,
- 30:39oh, I'm activated, right? Because that's what the pause is
- 30:42like. OK, hold on.
- 30:44I'm really activated. I had a bad dream.
- 30:48That's the pause, right? OK, now I'm going to take a
- 30:50breath, right 'cause what breathing does is it helps you
- 30:55come back into your body. If you're really escalated all
- 31:01your energies up here around your head, like from you like
- 31:04your neck up, that's energy just floods up, right?
- 31:08Yeah. So you want it to come on back
- 31:10down into your body. That's why I was saying then
- 31:13notice your body on the bed or wherever you are, like where are
- 31:17you in space? Oh yeah, I'm actually in bed and
- 31:21I'm safe. I'm breathing.
- 31:25OK so now say your thoughts are rolling like you just mentioned,
- 31:29like I can't stop my thoughts and you get to you get afraid
- 31:33because your thoughts feel like they're controlling you.
- 31:36Right. Right.
- 31:37So there's a bunch of different things you can do in that
- 31:40moment. If you have a meditation
- 31:42practice, there's, you know, there are things we could talk
- 31:45about you can do there. If you have a particular
- 31:49religious kind of bent, you can do what works for you in that
- 31:52world. If you are interested more in
- 31:55psychology, you can say to your mind I'm listening.
- 32:00I'm listening. I just.
- 32:02That's really interesting because I've never told that I'm
- 32:05listening. I've always just been like, shut
- 32:06up, stop it, stop that, get out of my brain.
- 32:12I've tried counting sheep. I've tried like look old school
- 32:16kind of stuff. And I do meditate, but that the
- 32:19emptying of that mind piece in it's so much easier during the
- 32:22day for me to like take 10 minutes and do so for some
- 32:24reason I just feel more in control of it.
- 32:26And in the middle of the night, I feel completely out of
- 32:28control. And I you feel.
- 32:30At the effect the same power that's correct.
- 32:33And that's what I mean about everything so much more
- 32:34permeable. So I am suggesting to my to my
- 32:39patients, take that moment to say I'm listening.
- 32:41What do you want me to know? That seems so scary.
- 32:47Yeah. So have you ever done this and
- 32:50what did it want you to know? To you I do I do do that you do
- 32:58and then and the answer is varied, right Sometimes it's I
- 33:03want you to know that I don't want you to have coffee after
- 33:061:00 PM ever again it's. Like a really super tactical.
- 33:12Right. It's just a nice, right?
- 33:15And then one of the answers I got was, you're not listening to
- 33:18me enough in the day, so I'm having to wake you up at night.
- 33:23And so as a result, what I started doing is writing more.
- 33:25I just started writing more during the day, right?
- 33:27I just started giving myself time out for myself to listen
- 33:32during the day so that at night I didn't have to be bothered,
- 33:35right? Oh, that's good.
- 33:37And that works. I think that is transformative.
- 33:41Like I have not just had these sleepless nights for the last
- 33:46year, year and a half. I've had these my whole life.
- 33:48So I just think I run. And I would never have said
- 33:52like, I'm a anxious person. I didn't really have words until
- 33:55we started using those words in the last maybe five years or a
- 33:58decade. I just, that's just how I run,
- 34:01but my best sleeps come from when I see myself in the day.
- 34:07And that's really hard to do in a practice.
- 34:09But you know, people talk about that all the time, like are you
- 34:13journaling? Are you doing meditation?
- 34:14Are you doing gratitude? But whatever it is, like you're
- 34:17saying, all these practices, if you have one that can keep you
- 34:21super grounded in the day and you can see yourself in the day,
- 34:25it has probably pave the way for me to have much better sleep
- 34:31now. So, but you got to invest in
- 34:34yourself during the day. And I find people, especially
- 34:38people in stressful jobs and positions, they have a really
- 34:42hard time managing, They're overwhelmed to recognize they're
- 34:45putting themselves into this loop into the cycle.
- 34:48And if you can't stop that overwhelm in the day, then it's
- 34:53going to catch up with you at night, I think.
- 34:55And and we have this collective fear going on.
- 34:58Exactly. So then, so there's all of that
- 35:01which we've, we've had for a long, long time and now we've
- 35:03got, you know, now it's at the next level with the.
- 35:06Collective. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:07Yeah. So so how do I get in the
- 35:09middle? I'm so back-to-back meetings.
- 35:11This is a typical day for me Yeah, you know, I'll, I'll spare
- 35:16you all of my pre pre gaming, but like, let's say the first
- 35:19meeting's at 8:30. OK, so 830 sometimes I get up
- 35:24earlier, sometimes they don't. But like in the middle of the
- 35:27day when the stress is the highest because I could have my
- 35:29meditation in the morning and be like I'm great.
- 35:31And then by 9:15 I'm like, are you fucking kidding me?
- 35:35Again, we're talking about this again.
- 35:37OK, really. Like, you know, it just it
- 35:39starts to rise like within the 1st and then it's back-to-back
- 35:43to back-to-back. And then by the end of the day I
- 35:46can't, I'm just dumb. I'm like rubber mind.
- 35:49Like, I can't even answer questions like I'm just done,
- 35:54done. So then it's either scrolling on
- 35:57the phone for an hour and a half or it's watching a movie or just
- 36:01something where I just don't have to think or please don't
- 36:03ask me what to, you know, have for dinner, not make for because
- 36:06that's not happening. Don't even ask me what I want
- 36:08for dinner. Yeah, like, it's just, it's
- 36:09really bad. But because it's so, and I know
- 36:13I should stop in the middle of the day, like I what, what?
- 36:16What? I won't put words in your mouth.
- 36:17Like what's a better way to maintain that to avoid getting
- 36:20to extreme burnout by 1:00? Such a great question.
- 36:24I think you both would agree with me that the overall the
- 36:28overarching culture of this busyness is not serving the
- 36:33planet. Yes.
- 36:37OK, so it's not. And so it, when do we stand up
- 36:41and say this is not helping my body or my loved ones or the
- 36:47planet and there's some personal agency there?
- 36:52When you say, OK, I can't change the culture or my planet, but I
- 36:56can change how I am in any moment, right?
- 37:01So I can commit to myself, to engaging in behaviors, even if
- 37:08it's for one minute, that shifts my perspective back to being
- 37:13centered. Because in doing that, Heather,
- 37:17you do change. That ripples out, that ripple
- 37:22effect ripples out to everyone in your sphere and beyond.
- 37:26But you have to be willing to say, yeah, this is if same.
- 37:31If I do the same behaviors, I'm going to get the same results
- 37:35always. So is it the focus of like, is
- 37:39it switching the focus to what is in my control and not in my
- 37:42control? Is it prioritizing in that
- 37:44moment my health? And I'm, I'm getting stressed.
- 37:46I need to calm down, I need to breathe.
- 37:48Like I just, is it a prioritization issue?
- 37:50Because obviously I do care about my health and I do care
- 37:52about my loved ones in the planet.
- 37:54But I'm not acting like it because I think, Oh, well, if I
- 37:59is it one or the other where it's like, well, then I'm not
- 38:01going to care about whether how this meeting goes because I care
- 38:05about my health like. Yeah.
- 38:06It's like, it's so funny. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:08It's not either or, right? It's it's, it's yes and right.
- 38:15So I'm not asking you to move any of your meetings out or
- 38:17cancel any of them. It's how you show up in your
- 38:21life in each meeting, in each moment, right?
- 38:26And So what do you need? Say, for example, between
- 38:28meetings, for example, I would say to you, to a patient, what
- 38:30do you need between meetings? Do you need a little bit longer
- 38:33reset? What do you need for you,
- 38:35Heather, that's going to help you feel like, OK, back on
- 38:39track. That meeting went off the rails,
- 38:41but that's over and now I'm back, right?
- 38:45And then over time, what you realize is I don't want that
- 38:48meeting. I'm not taking it because you
- 38:51start to feel in your body. And this isn't, this isn't
- 38:54supporting me. It's not supporting my life
- 38:55force. That's actually really good
- 38:59advice that I need to follow more is do I need to be in this
- 39:02meeting? And one of our guests, I can't
- 39:04remember who it was said kind of laying out the expectations and
- 39:08say, help me understand what you need from me in this meeting,
- 39:11how I can prepare and what you're looking for me for my
- 39:13contribution. And if they can't answer that
- 39:14question, then you're declining the meeting.
- 39:16Yeah, yeah, I remember that or the last episode, the last
- 39:23sticky situation episode, we had a question about, oh gosh, what
- 39:28was it? I just oh, the the revoked PTO
- 39:31and and it's like slow your corporate roll, right?
- 39:35Like we don't need to have someone on the phone 24/7.
- 39:41Sometimes as a corporation, we can take some agency and say,
- 39:44hey, we're a short staffed, we're just going to slow down a
- 39:47little bit. And what I never realized,
- 39:49Christine, until you said it, like I just feel like I had the
- 39:52biggest aha moment. Like I remember for, you know,
- 39:57COVID was so horrible for many. For me, it was bliss, absolute
- 40:02bliss. Because it wasn't my personal
- 40:05agency. It was a cultural thing that
- 40:07happened where we were forced into a slowdown and it was just
- 40:12delightful. Now I saw wreak havoc on my son
- 40:16like that wasn't delightful and you know, our youth, but
- 40:19regardless, it was delightful. And I think about it, think
- 40:22about all the things where we are forced to have our own
- 40:25agency. Think about cell phones and
- 40:27schools, right? Like our kids can't give those
- 40:29up. We have to fight it as a parent
- 40:31group to get them out of schools.
- 40:33Or what about recycling? Like we're out there like
- 40:35cleaning all our bottles. What number is what number?
- 40:38But like, let's stop it at the manufacturing level, right?
- 40:40There's all this stuff that's put down to the individual and
- 40:44we're in a really shitty time right now where all this
- 40:48overwhelm is like being put on to us.
- 40:51And I love that you we are talking about practices for us.
- 40:55But Heather, as a leader of your organization and as leaders of
- 40:59our organizations, we can also impact this, I think even
- 41:04bigger, you know, and get the ripple out like bigger.
- 41:07Like what are our standards at work to like, say this is not
- 41:10OK? Like this overwhelm is not doing
- 41:14our profits good, our investors or shareholders any good?
- 41:18Like let's calm down. Exactly.
- 41:22This is I love that you're saying that Blakely, because
- 41:25this is where it has to happen. Is it the level of leadership?
- 41:29And so as we step forward as leaders to both care for
- 41:35ourselves, but then we care for those that we are, you know,
- 41:38entrusted to help and entrusted to be of service to and, and
- 41:44lead not by only by example, but also by policy.
- 41:51Absolutely. Policy.
- 41:53Put on those lawyer glasses, Heather, and start writing some
- 41:56policy. It's true.
- 41:59I think it's it's policy and then it's execution of that
- 42:04policy and then it's really leadership by example.
- 42:08Because I don't have. All the policies in the world,
- 42:10but if the top leader isn't valuing these pauses or these
- 42:16breaks between meetings or kind of running over and not
- 42:19respecting people's time or just these unrealistic expectations
- 42:25of output, If that's coming from the top, then people are either
- 42:28going to live in a state of apathy because they just humanly
- 42:31can't do it, or they're going to live in a state of fear for
- 42:37getting fired if they don't do it.
- 42:39So either one of those is just horrible for culture.
- 42:43I'm going to make a plug for my wife, Nancy Kepner and she.
- 42:49Wanting her to come on this podcast.
- 42:51Partner. Yeah.
- 42:53They, they own crafted leadership and they train
- 42:55leaders to do this very thing like in the corporate world,
- 42:59C-Suite leaders to, to really change the climate and the
- 43:03culture. And they're doing a lot of
- 43:06they're not, they don't 'cause it, they don't call it pause,
- 43:08feel and decide. But they really are using those
- 43:11tools to help educate people about.
- 43:14Well, what you're exactly what you all are asking, which is how
- 43:16do we do this and the, you know, both in our personalized and in
- 43:20our business settings. Yeah.
- 43:22Yeah, no, she's amazing. She's definitely going to have
- 43:25her have her on just these amazing workshops and things
- 43:28because and what I love about the way she does it too is it is
- 43:30through workshop and it is typically several hours if not
- 43:34multi day to really put it into practice.
- 43:36Because we can sit here for 35 minutes and have a great
- 43:38conversation of how it all should be.
- 43:40But if I'm waking up tomorrow and I'm doing the same thing and
- 43:42I'm not actively taking that as a leader and standing up for
- 43:45other people to do the same, then the change will never
- 43:48happen. But I need those tools and I
- 43:49need to understand how to do it. Right.
- 43:52So back to your sleep, Heather. I want to have one more thing on
- 43:55that. So you're laying there at 3:00
- 43:56in the morning? Yeah.
- 43:58Don't panic like we are not going to die, as Blakely knows
- 44:05if you don't sleep. Yeah.
- 44:07You know we're not. We're not.
- 44:10Right. You know we don't ignore that
- 44:12book, Blakely. Thank you SO.
- 44:15Yeah, we are not going to die. So that's where when we paint,
- 44:18when we're asleep at night, we tend to panic like the world,
- 44:22you know, the Sky's falling, the blah, blah, blah.
- 44:24And then off we go. We start to panic.
- 44:26So the most important thing I say to my patients is don't
- 44:30panic. You know, if you're panicking,
- 44:33do one of those, you know, things we've talked about to
- 44:36settle yourself because I promise you, the decisions you
- 44:41think you need to make at 1:30 or three in the morning are not
- 44:43the decisions are going to seem reasonable at 10 AM.
- 44:47That's so true. I mean, Jerry Maguire, right?
- 44:49It's the famous thing. Yeah.
- 44:50So what, what what do you think about Sleep Aids Pro or Con Pro
- 44:58Pro Sleep Aids. Interesting.
- 44:59What kind? Well, if people have, well, I
- 45:03don't want, I'm not giving medical advice, so let me, yes.
- 45:06Absolutely. We don't give it or we don't
- 45:08give legal or medical advice. We don't give.
- 45:10Yeah. And please go see your
- 45:11physician. But I personally do like
- 45:14melatonin. If people are having trouble
- 45:16falling asleep, if if their problem is they go to sleep just
- 45:20fine and then they they just wake up multiple times in the
- 45:22night, then I like there's some good Chinese formulas that I
- 45:27like, but over the counter they're actually just doing
- 45:30lion's mane or tiger tail or some of the mushrooms that are
- 45:33on the market are super helpful. Actually, I am a fan for some
- 45:38people of gummies of CBD and both a little bit of THC, not a
- 45:43lot. Not so you feel stoned.
- 45:45I don't think that's helpful. But that also then depends on if
- 45:48you're medicated, if you have other medications that are going
- 45:50to interfere. We're now seeing that that is a
- 45:53drug that can readily interfere with meds.
- 45:56So just there's a cautionary tale there.
- 45:58Oh, really? OK, that's interesting.
- 46:01But also just at night when you're going to sleep, you know,
- 46:04putting, you know the standard put your, put all your
- 46:07electronics away 2 hours before you go to bed, those two.
- 46:11Hours. Two hours when we're sitting in
- 46:13front of screens, we've got electrons, it's just bombarding
- 46:17us so all. Right, OK, I back it up.
- 46:19We gotta, we gotta, we gotta break this down.
- 46:22We gotta break this down. The electrons.
- 46:26I get that. But like, what if it's far away?
- 46:28What if I'm watching a movie on on like a television screen?
- 46:31That's yeah. Across the room.
- 46:32Is that OK? Is it distant?
- 46:34Make sure you know you got the make sure the movie is calming,
- 46:37right? You don't want to be watching
- 46:40the night manager you know before you go to bed or yellow
- 46:43straight. That's what we do.
- 46:44We watch the serious stuff. I can't watch anything scary.
- 46:48I'm such a wimp. I can't.
- 46:49I love suspense thriller at night.
- 46:53I can't do it. You also aren't sleeping well,
- 46:57so no one's listening. To you I am when I'm in a van
- 47:00down by the river. But actually, that's a good
- 47:05point. If if we looked back on night 91
- 47:10is the yeah, was it you? Were you in nature?
- 47:12Were you like the were the screens off?
- 47:14Yes, situation. We did watch an episode of our
- 47:18show, but you just fall asleep more naturally because you are,
- 47:24I mean, it's dark trees, you know, and it's quiet and you
- 47:29know, and we're not, we actually have a pretty strict no phone
- 47:35policy. Like not, no, not like they're
- 47:40locked away. But when we're on vacation
- 47:43together, we really try to stay off the phones.
- 47:46Truly so. It's not building up all day,
- 47:49but I do wonder about like the electromagnet, what did you?
- 47:52Was that right? Is that the right word?
- 47:53Electromagnetic stuff coming back at your face.
- 47:56Well, that the like electrons specifically.
- 47:58Office electrons. OK, Yeah.
- 48:00But you know, we're just. Getting bombarded.
- 48:02At all times and all ways yeah planet that you know this
- 48:05generation is the first generation to experience that
- 48:08you know we. That's why I felt like a badass,
- 48:10because I have a hard 20 minute rule before bed and I thought I
- 48:14was killing it 20 minutes before bed and 20 minutes after I wake
- 48:19up in the morning. You're laughing at me, but I'm
- 48:21serious. I thought, I think I'm doing
- 48:23better than most people. I think most people.
- 48:25You are. You are.
- 48:27I mean, like, I go and wake up my kid and I'm like, you're late
- 48:30for school, you're late for work.
- 48:31And he's like literally wrapped up in the.
- 48:34Cord and I'm. Like and I thought so hard to
- 48:39keep phones out of his room. He's like, I'm 18 now, mom and.
- 48:43I'm like I'm still. Paying your phone bill,
- 48:44Whatever. My gosh.
- 48:46OK, so it's bad two hours. That's I will that will that
- 48:50will be a goal, but it's not hip for.
- 48:53Pop. Gonna happen right now, but I
- 48:55could, I could try for an hour. So then I'm just reading a book
- 48:59or reading a book. Take a bath, having a petite as
- 49:02the light, you know, we're getting a lot more light now
- 49:04we're at least where we are, We could take a little walk in the
- 49:08evening, right? Being outside of nature is also
- 49:11another thing that I suggest to people.
- 49:13And Blakely, you just reminded me of that with the with the van
- 49:15experience, there is there's just nothing quite as effective
- 49:22as getting your feet on the ground outside.
- 49:25Yeah, that was what I was going to tell to Heather, something I
- 49:29did in that last like super stressful year.
- 49:32And I whatever. Like that was like one of the
- 49:34worst years of my life. So don't like take this with a
- 49:36grain of salt, but when I was at the tipping point, I would go
- 49:40out almost every afternoon, leave the office at like one or
- 49:44two like after lunch and walk the trail.
- 49:47I just couldn't cope otherwise and I was so far gone.
- 49:50Like that was just getting me through the day.
- 49:54But I it got me through the day. Like just get out and do a 10
- 49:58minute walk, just 10 minutes outside.
- 50:02Yep, I'm going to do it. I'm going to do it.
- 50:04It's got and I think I need to set an alarm.
- 50:06I hate devices. I hate it.
- 50:08Don't ever buy me a watch. Not even a regular watch.
- 50:11I'm not interested. I just I don't like being
- 50:14tracked. I don't like not from like a
- 50:16weird government conspiracy kind of way more.
- 50:20And just like I don't, I'm not, I'm not in competition with my
- 50:23own body of like, oh, I got this score today or oh, I got this.
- 50:25I'm like Nah Nah, I sometimes. Don't read the book.
- 50:29Yeah, no, I'm not. I'm not doing that.
- 50:32But I think a reminder like an alarm on my phone that goes off
- 50:36that says go walk around the block would be helpful.
- 50:39And I know all of your watches tell you to stand up and all
- 50:41that shit, but. No, I don't like that shit.
- 50:45I have a big question and well, this is like not all business.
- 50:51And we just had a lot of business talk about how we can,
- 50:54as leaders change things and how we can help ourselves and sleep
- 50:58better and fight the overwhelm. But you talked about the
- 51:01collective in the beginning. And one of the ways I combat my
- 51:05sleep is I read in the night. And I can read from three to
- 51:08five easily most nights. And I'm reading right now the
- 51:12ever popular Dan Brown and his latest book.
- 51:15And it's about noetic science and which I've never even heard
- 51:20that term before. But.
- 51:22It is the study of. Noah's Ark.
- 51:26The consciousness, the collective, the it's the study
- 51:31of is there like they study near death experiences is one of the
- 51:37things they study and how this you're you basically your spirit
- 51:41leaves and it's looking down at your body and they're like, is
- 51:43that spirit part of this collective?
- 51:45They call it the collective, they call it the consciousness.
- 51:47And is that what you're talking about when you talk about the
- 51:50collective? Is this like, I don't know, like
- 51:56the, the, the, all the bits of the spirits that we have and
- 51:59the, the premise of the book is it's actually all inside our
- 52:04brains. We're all part of this
- 52:06collective, but it's like a radio frequency where the, how
- 52:10our brains protect us is we can only tune into like 1 channel
- 52:14like our brains channel. But when you have a near death
- 52:18experience or you get like sudden savant syndrome, like all
- 52:21these things you hear about, all of a sudden they can play the
- 52:23piano. It's because they were able to
- 52:25broaden their frequencies and tap into the greater collective.
- 52:30And it's a Dan Brown book. And I'm like, what is this?
- 52:34And like, do other people know about this?
- 52:36Do you know about? This research, yeah, yeah.
- 52:39So the, you know, the, the it's certainly in Tibetan Buddhism.
- 52:42They've been talking about this for 5000 years.
- 52:46They I'm just. Coming up to speed.
- 52:50Or Dan is but because we because the Tibetan Buddhists were was
- 52:57was a super insular culture, right.
- 52:59They were in the mountains of Tibet, like 14, fifteen, 16,000,
- 53:03you know, high peaks like there weren't there wasn't a lot of
- 53:07cross traffic like there was in the rest of the world.
- 53:10And so that information didn't really disseminate until just
- 53:14really the last, you know, some did in some ways.
- 53:18But really in terms of Western consciousness, only in the last
- 53:2130 or 40 years have we seen it. But we now see that they've done
- 53:26all kinds are doing all kinds of imaging MRI studies on monks who
- 53:31are big meditators to actually prove there's this sort of
- 53:34neural net is what you're describing.
- 53:37And so there are different traditions looking at it from
- 53:41different ways. But you know, at the end of the
- 53:42day, Christians would say it's God, right?
- 53:44Not the guy in the sky God, you know, but a presence, an
- 53:48overarching presence of like the great spirit that we are all one
- 53:52with. But we have this idea that we're
- 53:55running around as single singular bodies being isolated
- 54:00because, as you just said, likely we could only tune into
- 54:04certain frequencies. And some people can tune into
- 54:07more frequencies, and some people can tune into fewer
- 54:10frequencies. Some are more dense, some are
- 54:11more fluid. But physics tells us everything
- 54:15is is energy as everything is. And so if you just follow that
- 54:20track, it's not hard to get to this idea of the collective,
- 54:24right? Which makes it all the more
- 54:27person. AI computer way, but you know,
- 54:29yeah, it's more of a Borg all yeah, the Borg, the Borg.
- 54:34Now you're talking my language, but it's this idea really that
- 54:39we, we are all connected. And that's why, like they do
- 54:44studies on prayer where a group of people will pray no matter
- 54:48the tradition and they can affect the health.
- 54:51This has been done at at medical schools in the East Coast where
- 54:56they have prayer groups praying over cardiac patients and they
- 55:01have higher improvements of health much more quickly than
- 55:05those cohorts who do not get prayed over.
- 55:08I mean, it's documented over and over.
- 55:09Yeah. Yeah.
- 55:10So yes, yeah. Yeah, I think this is where our
- 55:15show is going. All the future episodes are only
- 55:18going to be. Talking about this topic I.
- 55:20Think this is so? Fascinating.
- 55:23Me too. Fascinating.
- 55:25It is, yeah. It's really powerful.
- 55:29I wish we had so much more time, but unfortunately we don't.
- 55:31Christy, we appreciate you coming so much.
- 55:36Breaking down that thought of pausing and then deciding, yeah,
- 55:43yeah. I, I love that it's a tool to in
- 55:47the middle of the night if I'm waking up and just taking
- 55:50ownership of that, recognizing I'm already in reactive mode.
- 55:53If I'm waking up with anxiety and just pausing, feel what I
- 55:58need to feel, listen potentially to what what's being said to me.
- 56:02And then in that situation, what would you say is decide?
- 56:06Decide is after you listen because then you you hear you.
- 56:10It's like you sense the answer right?
- 56:12And the same during the day you get out of those meetings you're
- 56:14upset about. Just take a pause and then feel
- 56:18and decide what's next. Might be the walk.
- 56:21Yep, I love that. I love that so much.
- 56:24Thank you for this. I'm planning on sleeping much
- 56:27better. I'm not going to get off my
- 56:29phone 2 hours before bed, but I'm going to work on it.
- 56:31I'm going to work on it. I'm going to little by little
- 56:33don't. Scroll Heather.
- 56:35I won't. I'm not.
- 56:36I'm actually. Yeah, I'm going to get better at
- 56:37that too, maybe. Both friends or you know,
- 56:39something like that. Oh, the new cross play.
- 56:43Oh, is it good? It's so good.
- 56:46Cross play. It's like crossword.
- 56:49On the New York. Times.
- 56:50Oh, OK, All right, cool. I'll.
- 56:52I'll do that. It'll keep my brain working too.
- 56:54That's a bonus. All right, before we let you go,
- 56:57we are going to ask you the question that we ask all of our
- 57:00guests and we answer it ourselves, which is what brought
- 57:03a smile to your face this week. You don't have to go first if
- 57:08you're not pressured. I got it.
- 57:11No, I. Got.
- 57:12It huge smile to my face. Was I, I recently or just this
- 57:15last week I was in California for a sports medicine
- 57:18conference. And what brought a smile to my
- 57:21face was the sense of, of community and of, of people
- 57:27who've come together to be of service in, in specifically in
- 57:31my field and the community of us getting together to learn more
- 57:35and to share that knowledge. So that brought a smile to my
- 57:37face. That's beautiful.
- 57:39That is nice Blakely Clay. I'm grateful for Japanese toilet
- 57:46inventions and AS. Because of that spicy food you
- 57:52ate or. Wait at all?
- 57:55Did you get a bidet in your van? Also, you spoiled a little bit.
- 58:00You did. That's all.
- 58:01Are you serious? I.
- 58:02Didn't in the van. I did not get a bidet, but as
- 58:07everyone knows, I love my Japanese Totos in the house
- 58:10we've got 3. There's like life changing in
- 58:13the van we have something called oh I'm going to get it wrong.
- 58:17It's called like a trap on toilet, but it was also invented
- 58:22the. Trap.
- 58:23Trap, trap, trap, trap. I don't know but it is like a
- 58:29contoured toilet that is like single use.
- 58:33It's got like a little bag and you hit a flush button and it
- 58:36closes the bag and heat seals it.
- 58:39Wow. Yeah, so you can dispose it.
- 58:43And then one of Scott's whoops, I hit my mic there.
- 58:46But one of Scott's friends gave us a portable Toto bidet to have
- 58:49with it. So yes, there's that.
- 58:50Too. Wow, that was but man.
- 58:53It is. It is like camping supreme it
- 58:57is. That is OK, so lamping
- 59:00officially. OK, it sounds like a diaper
- 59:03genie. It is a diaper genie, which must
- 59:06have been invented by the Japanese because it's so great.
- 59:10You have a diaper genie with that.
- 59:12With a it's a. 100. Persona.
- 59:15Diaper Genie, But instead of those like little knockings,
- 59:17it's got this little like. Like a sealer.
- 59:21Oh my goodness, Clay, next time you visit, I think you should
- 59:24just stay in Blakely's van. Just.
- 59:26Park it out in front and I'll just use that and that's good to
- 59:30be self. Contained.
- 59:32All right. What about you, Sir?
- 59:34OK, so I went and visited Fort Collins, Co this past week and
- 59:41my wife and son and myself all traveled together.
- 59:45And on the last day, you know, we spent most of the week
- 59:48visiting my sibling Charlie. And Charlie's the chef at the
- 59:51Neighbor, which is downtown. And so when you're out with a
- 59:54chef and you're just visiting, you know, different restaurants,
- 59:57everybody knows Charlie and you get back, try this and oh, and
- 1:00:01let's go here. They have the best this and
- 1:00:02that. Anyway, at the end of the trip
- 1:00:06my son came to me and right before bed and he said to my
- 1:00:12wife and I, he said. This was the best day of my
- 1:00:16life. Oh.
- 1:00:17Wow. That brought a smile to my face.
- 1:00:20So we had such a great time. He got one-on-one time with
- 1:00:23Charlie and that was kind of one of the main goals of the trip
- 1:00:26and it was really special. And so it was that brought a
- 1:00:30very big smile to my face. So.
- 1:00:32That's like a heart warmer, yeah.
- 1:00:34That's. Beautiful.
- 1:00:35Yeah. I love that Heather I it went
- 1:00:40against my will to Disney Springs.
- 1:00:44Oh. It, it was, damn it, it was.
- 1:00:46But. Here's the damn it it.
- 1:00:49Is but I didn't go to like the park and like the whole day like
- 1:00:53we only. Able to have the worst Disney in
- 1:00:55it. Look, I kind of got it from the
- 1:00:59Disney Springs perspective because look, it was like so
- 1:01:03cold. I mean, remember when we were in
- 1:01:05Atlanta and I had to buy that fur coat because it was so cold
- 1:01:07in Atlanta, I did not pack well at all.
- 1:01:08I was thinking it would be 80°, but it the weather turned polar
- 1:01:12vortex, whatever. Anyway, I'm in a fur coat.
- 1:01:15In OR, you were in Orlando, right?
- 1:01:16Yes, I was in Orlando in a fur coat.
- 1:01:19I mean a fake fur. Just so everyone's clear.
- 1:01:22Obviously it was like 80 bucks, but so I it wasn't enough
- 1:01:26because I had a little like tank dressed cotton dress on and then
- 1:01:30I had the fur coat, but my legs were still freezing.
- 1:01:32And so we're wandering on Disney Springs.
- 1:01:33I'm trying so hard to have fun because Nick is like, this is
- 1:01:36his jam. He's a Disney adult adult,
- 1:01:38recovering Disney adult since we got married.
- 1:01:40It's the second place. It is.
- 1:01:43And he always said it was because he it was where his kids
- 1:01:45were and that's their tradition, which is super cute.
- 1:01:47And that's true. But also it's him like he, he
- 1:01:50gets, he's like, Oh, you have to see this.
- 1:01:52Oh, you, oh, I want to take you here.
- 1:01:54Oh, you have to, we got to go to this like Indiana Jones,
- 1:01:56whatever. They do this really cool smoking
- 1:01:58drink. And I mean, it was just really
- 1:02:00cute. So it was more of a smile, like
- 1:02:03laughing at someone, but also still warm in my heart.
- 1:02:07Smile. Yeah, running around Disney
- 1:02:10World, freezing, watching him against all weather, like just
- 1:02:15no matter what, we were going to have fun and we're going to
- 1:02:17stick it out because you were in the happiest place on earth and
- 1:02:21better smile. So I.
- 1:02:23Did. I'm glad that you did I.
- 1:02:25Did that was fun. Thank you everybody for sharing
- 1:02:28your smiles. Our last question, Christy,
- 1:02:31where can people keep up with you?
- 1:02:33How can people get involved, stay up to date on what you're
- 1:02:36doing? Where can they go to follow you
