- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey guys, welcome back to Batty in Progress podcast.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: I am super excited for this next episode, episode three.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Today we're gonna be talking about Pilates.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Um, I feel like Pilates is like all the rage right now.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Everyone loves it, everyone loves reformer Pilates, everyone loves a good matte sculpt Pilates class or hot Pilates.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: It's just like a whole big thing right now.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: And as a Pilates instructor, I get to share what I think about it.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Um just so you guys know, I did have a hot tea before this episode this time, and it did make my throat feel better.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: So I will say my throat is still kind of not fully recovered, and man, it just sucks that it's taking so long, but I think it's because of my job because I teach Pilates every single day, so I have to project my voice, and um yeah, it just kind of hurts my throat, especially if I'm sick.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: You know, I've told you guys I've been sick over the last few weeks, but yeah, just bear with me.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Um, I did teach another few classes today, so that's why it's just a little extra raspy, I guess.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Other than that, we will be continuing.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: We're gonna be talking about Pilates today.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Like I said, I am a Pilates instructor.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: I teach every single day.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: It is very, very fun, but this is the job that I do on the side.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Um, my main priority is always my one-on-one coaching clients, and with them, I do primarily just focus on strength training, unless they request that I um make them a little Matte Pilates video for them to follow along with.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Sometimes some of the clients do really like that for their active rest days.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Um, but for the most part, they're always strength training.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I have a couple hot takes or rather controversial thoughts to some people on Pilates and the results that you get from Pilates.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Um, just to be clear, I am not anti-Pilates.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: I am a Pilates instructor at the end of the day.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Wow, take a shot every time I say Pilates.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, I'm not anti-Pilates.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: I do really like Pilates.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: It's just it's not gonna get you toned.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: I feel like one of the issues with the industry or the way that Pilates is marketed towards women is that it's an exercise that's gonna make you toned.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: And that's just not the case.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about what toned actually even means because people say toned and they throw it around like it's something that everybody knows, but I feel like people really don't know what toned actually means.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Being toned actually means that you have enough muscle with a low enough body fat to be able to see that muscle peek through.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And I feel like there's a lot of times where women come to me and they say, Well, I just really want to get toned.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: And I feel like to them, toned means, you know, being pretty thin and having a little bit of muscle, but not being overly bulky.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Like that's usually their definition of what toned is.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: What toned actually is, is having enough muscle, having a good amount of muscle actually, and having low enough body fat so that your muscle can kind of peek through without being super quote unquote bulky, like everybody says, right?
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: So basically to get to this point, you need muscle and low fat.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: But Pilates alone just doesn't build enough muscle mass for you to get there.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: And that's what most people get wrong.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: They feel like by lifting small, little three-pound weights or five-pound weights, they're gonna eventually gain enough muscle to be able to have that toned, nice defined look.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: But the truth is that three to five pound dumbbells or just body weight exercises are not gonna challenge your muscles enough to the point where they tear.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: And we talked about this muscle tearing formula basically of building muscle in the last episode.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Three to five pound dumbbells are just not gonna get your muscles to the point where they tear because that weight just isn't challenging enough.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it might be challenging at first when you're first starting your fitness journey, but at some point you are gonna get used to that weight and it's just not gonna be challenging for you anymore.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: This is actually, we'll get into this in a different episode.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: This is called progressive overload.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: You need to keep continuing to increase your weight to be able to challenge your muscles so you can keep growing and getting results.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Anyways, that is a segue into a later episode.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: But I want to tackle this myth that I feel like most women just still, for some reason, have not gotten over.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: And it's that women think that lifting heavy is gonna make them bulky.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: I swear, every time I hear this, it's just like I just want to roll my eyes and look at my brain because lifting weights actually does the complete, complete opposite.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Lifting weights actually helps you lose fat and build muscle.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Because if you're challenging your muscles with heavy weights, creating those tears, eating enough protein so that your muscles can repair themselves and getting proper sleep, you're creating more muscle in your body, increasing the amount of muscle that you have.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: The more muscle that you have on your body, the faster your metabolism becomes, which makes it even easier for you to lose fat later on.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: This is why when you see people that are already fit be able to stay fit so easily.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: That happens because they already have enough muscle mass on their body, which just makes their metabolism so much faster.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: And it just makes it easier for you to keep the fat off.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: But, anyways, let's just talk about being bulky and why women hate it so much.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, I would hate to be bulky too, to be honest, but for some reason we think that being bulky means having too much muscle when in reality it just means that you have too much fat on your body.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: We see somebody that's bulky and we associate it with a man that is like muscular but not defined.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Like you can see some definition, but there's definitely fat on his body.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Versus if you imagine somebody that's toned, you typically might envision a girl who's pretty slim.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: She has some muscle definition peeking through, but she has pretty low body fat.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: So somebody that's toned versus somebody that's bulky, you visualize both of those bodies having muscle on them.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: It's just the difference here is the amount of fat that they have on the on their body that really differentiates the two.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: One has higher body fat, the other has lower body fat.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about what lifting actually does.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: And I mean, I've already given you the example of what it actually does to our muscles.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: So you already know the science behind muscle fiber tears, right?
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: But what lifting actually does is builds the shape underneath all of the fat.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: And this is why when you see a girl at the gym who has like really, really nice glutes, it's not made of fat, it's made of muscle, and it's because she's constantly challenging her muscles over and over with really heavy weight.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: This is not something that you can do in Pilates.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: I know that in Pilates we use a lot of resistance with like bands and with springs, and it's awesome and it's great that it works your hips and your glutes and all, but it's not gonna be heavy enough for you to tear those muscle fibers in the glutes so that you can actually grow a nice and plump booty, you know, it's just not it's not gonna challenge it to that point.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: It definitely is a great exercise for opening up the hips and for working on your range of motion.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: I feel like Pilates is a lot, I mean, yes, it is a workout, but it also has a lot of mobility built in, and I feel like Pilates should be used more as a mobility and range of motion kind of exercise.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: So something that I typically do is I do Pilates once a week, and I use that as my active rest days, but I have noticed that by adding at least one day of Pilates into my routine has helped my lifting days a lot.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: I feel like my range of motion whenever I do hip thrusts or squats is a lot better because of the things that we do in Pilates.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: So, no, I don't feel like Pilates should be your main form of exercise.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: I really think that strength training should be your main form of exercise with a little bit of Pilates sprinkled in, maybe one to two days max, but definitely not more than two on a weekly basis.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: I feel like most of your workout days should be definitely strength training.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: If your goal is to get toned and have nice toned arms, nice visible abs and build your glutes, definitely strength training is the way to go.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: Now, this isn't me telling you that you should quit Pilates, like that's not by any means what I'm trying to say.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying that if you do want to build your glutes, if you do want to get toned, if you do want visible abs, I feel like you should prioritize strength training more than you do Pilates.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Pilates should be done maybe once to twice a week.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: I feel like because of the whole Pilates trend, um, I feel like women are being taught the wrong stuff or the wrong order of doing things.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: And this is personally what I have seen my clients get the best results with, and I have also myself gotten the best results with prioritizing strength training and having Pilates as a secondary form of movement.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: If you feel like this is something you might want some help with, you can always shoot me a DM.

- 12:33SPEAKER_00: But other than that, these have been my honest thoughts about the Pilates industry.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: And I, you know what, I get to say it because I'm a Pilates instructor and a strength training coach.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: I'm just gonna tell you the truth, okay?
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: And that's what this podcast is for.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Me being very real, very honest, and telling you my thoughts and how I can best help you.
