- 0:00What if one of the biggest reasons you're exhausted isn't because you're doing too much.
- 0:06It's because you're carrying things that God never asked you to carry.
- 0:10As moms, I think we are often told to help more, give more, serve more.
- 0:15We need to volunteer more at schools and at church.
- 0:19And while serving others is absolutely part of our faith, many of us have never learned
- 0:24the difference between carrying someone's burden and carrying their backpack.
- 0:29Today, we're talking about Healthy Boundaries 101.
- 0:33What they are, what they are not, and why understanding the difference can completely
- 0:39change your relationships, your stress level, and your sense of peace.
- 0:47If you're tired of people pleasing, carrying too much, and wondering why peace still feels
- 0:52so hard to hold on to, you're in the right place.
- 0:56Hi, I'm Lori, mom, former people pleaser, and Your Boundaries Coach.
- 1:01Here we talk about how to protect your peace, set healthier boundaries, and get clear on
- 1:06what actually matters so that you can build a life that feels lighter, calmer, and more
- 1:12satisfying.
- 1:13So let's stop the chaos for a minute, moms, catch our breath, and get into this next episode.
- 1:22Welcome back to Healthy Boundaries for Moms.
- 1:24I'm Lori Grimes, and today we're talking about Healthy Boundaries 101.
- 1:30Again, what they are and what they are not.
- 1:34I think this is one of those topics that sits underneath almost everything we discuss on
- 1:39this podcast.
- 1:40Whether we're talking about people pleasing, the mom guilt we feel, those overcommitted
- 1:45schedules, those difficult relationships, comparison, how we want to find more peace
- 1:52in our lives, boundaries are usually somewhere in the conversation.
- 1:58So today, I want to slow down and answer a simple question, what is a boundary really?
- 2:05Because boundaries have become one of those words that get thrown around a lot.
- 2:10Everyone's using it, but many of us aren't exactly sure what they mean.
- 2:14And maybe you've heard, just set a boundary here, or you need better boundaries.
- 2:20Protect your peace.
- 2:21But what all does that actually mean?
- 2:23So for years, I thought boundaries meant just telling people what to do, what they could,
- 2:28what they couldn't do.
- 2:30I thought boundaries were like walls.
- 2:33And I really also thought boundaries were pretty selfish.
- 2:38And as a Christian, I worried that boundaries might make me like a less loving person.
- 2:45After all, aren't we supposed to help people?
- 2:46We're told that all the time, right?
- 2:49Aren't we supposed to serve?
- 2:50Aren't we supposed to carry one another's burdens?
- 2:53And yes, the answer is, we should be helping.
- 2:56But I think many of us have misunderstood what boundaries really are.
- 3:02So what are boundaries?
- 3:04One of the most well-known quotes are from Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend's book
- 3:09on boundaries.
- 3:10And it says, boundaries define us.
- 3:14So I love that statement because boundaries help us understand where our responsibilities
- 3:19end and someone else's begin.
- 3:23So think of boundary like a fence around a piece of property.
- 3:27That fence isn't there to control what your neighbor's doing, right?
- 3:32It's there to define what belongs to you and what belongs to your neighbor.
- 3:36In the same way, boundaries help us understand what God has entrusted to us.
- 3:42So what lives inside our boundaries?
- 3:46Well, we are entrusted with time, our time, our energy, our emotions, our attitudes, our
- 3:57choices, what we choose to believe in our values, our talents and abilities, resources
- 4:06that we have, and our responsibilities.
- 4:09These are all things God has entrusted to us to steward well.
- 4:15So for example, my time is inside my boundary.
- 4:19That means I get to decide how I'm going to spend it.
- 4:23Just like my emotions are again inside my boundary.
- 4:28That means I'm responsible for understanding and managing them.
- 4:32I mean, you've heard, you made me feel that way.
- 4:35Someone say that.
- 4:37That's not really true.
- 4:39You have to choose what you're going to feel and how you're going to react.
- 4:43So that is your responsibility.
- 4:46And my beliefs are also inside my boundary.
- 4:48I'm responsible for knowing what I believe in and why.
- 4:53And my talents and my abilities are also inside my boundary.
- 4:57God gave them to me, especially to steward wisely, not to exhaust myself trying to meet
- 5:04everyone's expectations.
- 5:06Okay?
- 5:08So healthy boundaries, again, help us manage what God has entrusted to us.
- 5:15They are not walls.
- 5:18They are stewardship.
- 5:21So now that asks the question, okay, we know what boundaries are, what are they not?
- 5:26So let's talk about what boundaries are not.
- 5:29Again, we said boundaries are not selfish.
- 5:33So this is not just turning in on ourselves and just making our world just about us.
- 5:39Boundaries are not punishment.
- 5:40We're not instructing a boundary to punish someone else.
- 5:45Like, this is what you get because of how I feel.
- 5:48I'm going to put this boundary here now.
- 5:52Boundaries are not controlling other people.
- 5:54So my boundary with my time isn't to control my spouse or my children.
- 6:01It is not what we're using that for.
- 6:04And boundaries are not about getting your way.
- 6:08They are not walls that keep people out.
- 6:12In fact, healthy boundaries are what make healthy relationships possible.
- 6:18Because healthy boundaries create that clarity that we need to know about.
- 6:22And clarity creates trust because we know what to expect from someone else.
- 6:29Someone who has clear boundaries helps us to know where they stand and where we stand.
- 6:34It's very clear what's important to them.
- 6:37And then we in turn can respect that and vice versa.
- 6:42One of the things I've learned is that healthy boundaries don't keep love out.
- 6:47So we're not walling off people's love and attention to us.
- 6:53They keep resentment out instead.
- 6:57Because when we constantly ignore our limits and we say yes to everything, when really
- 7:01we mean no, and we take responsibility for things that aren't ours, resentment begins
- 7:09to grow.
- 7:10And healthy boundaries are there to protect those relationships.
- 7:16So that we don't destroy the people we care about the most.
- 7:20The scripture that changed everything.
- 7:22One of the most helpful scriptures on this topic comes from Galatians chapter 6 verse
- 7:282.
- 7:29It says, carry each other's burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
- 7:35But then just a few verses later in verse 5 it says, for each one should carry their
- 7:40own load.
- 7:42So at first glance you're looking at those verses seeming like they don't make sense.
- 7:46They contradict each other.
- 7:48So it says we're supposed to carry each other's burdens, but are we supposed to carry our
- 7:52own loads?
- 7:53Yes.
- 7:54The answer is both.
- 7:56Yes and.
- 7:57And understanding the difference may be one of the most important lessons we can learn
- 8:02about having healthy boundaries.
- 8:04So let's understand burdens and backpacks.
- 8:08How they're different.
- 8:10A burden is something unusually heavy.
- 8:13This could be like a cancer diagnosis or someone died that we care about.
- 8:19It could be a catastrophic, like a natural crisis, a house fire or a financial crisis.
- 8:25Someone lost their job.
- 8:27It's a season of deep grief.
- 8:29It's something that would be difficult for anyone to carry alone.
- 8:34When that happens, the body of Christ steps in, right?
- 8:39We create these meal trains.
- 8:41We babysit.
- 8:42We offer prayer.
- 8:44We show up.
- 8:45We help as the body of Christ to carry the burden.
- 8:49That's exactly what God is calling us to do.
- 8:53But then there are loads, like the backpack, okay?
- 8:57Every person has a backpack that they're responsible to carry.
- 9:02So what's inside that backpack?
- 9:05It is all the things we talked about that are within our boundaries.
- 9:08Our choices, our attitudes, our responsibilities, commitments, habits, growth, and sometimes
- 9:14consequences.
- 9:16Those are our responsibility.
- 9:18And this is where many of us are just getting into trouble.
- 9:21We're confusing it, especially as moms, okay?
- 9:25Especially people pleasers.
- 9:27We are starting to pick up other people's backpacks.
- 9:31We are taking responsibility for other people's emotions.
- 9:36I mean, we get in there and we try to fix their daily problems, right?
- 9:40And we feel guilty when they're unhappy.
- 9:43We rush in when things just start to feel a little uncomfortable.
- 9:47And we carry responsibilities that God has never assigned to us to carry.
- 9:53And before long, we're carrying our backpack, half the neighborhood's backpack too, right?
- 10:00So I think this is where many Christian women get stuck, because we genuinely mean well.
- 10:07We want to help.
- 10:08We love people.
- 10:10We care about people.
- 10:11And we don't want to see people suffer, especially the ones that we love.
- 10:15But somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that helping everyone is the same
- 10:21thing as loving everyone.
- 10:23And that's just not true.
- 10:26So compassion and responsibility, they are not the same thing.
- 10:31Compassion says, I care about your struggle.
- 10:35And responsibility says, your struggle is now my job to fix.
- 10:40Those are very different things.
- 10:42Now biblically, we understand Jesus was compassionate, but he wasn't responsible for everyone's choices, right?
- 10:50We see that he taught people, he loved people, and he did invite people in, but he still
- 10:57allowed people to make their decisions.
- 10:59And he allowed people to walk away.
- 11:03We see he allowed people to experience the natural consequences of their decisions.
- 11:08He didn't rescue them from them.
- 11:11And I think that's where we understand helping versus rescuing.
- 11:15Sometimes helping is exactly what God calls us to do.
- 11:20And rescuing actually prevents growth.
- 11:23And I've seen this in my own walk as a mom.
- 11:26When I come in and I don't let my kids experience the natural consequences of their choices,
- 11:31I'm really not doing them a favor.
- 11:33Because now they don't have any friction to make the choice that's not the right choice.
- 11:41I'm not, I'm getting in the way of that friction.
- 11:43I'm making it smoother and easier.
- 11:45So they're not remembering that they don't want to do that in the future.
- 11:50So say a family were to lose their home in a fire, okay, we can help carry that burden.
- 11:56And if someone were to receive like a difficult health diagnosis, we can also help carry that
- 12:03as well.
- 12:04What about if a widow is grieving?
- 12:06Well, we can step in and we can help carry that burden and pray and sit with the widow.
- 12:13What about situations where someone continually refuses to take responsibility?
- 12:18So we're talking about a person that doesn't want to look for work, maybe expects everyone
- 12:21else to support them.
- 12:23What about the person who is repeatedly making a destructive choice and expects someone else
- 12:29to come up and clean up this mess?
- 12:31So we could be talking about like addiction.
- 12:34So hear me clearly, people struggling with addiction do need compassion.
- 12:39They obviously need prayer and support and to be encouraged, but there's a difference
- 12:44between supporting recovery and rescuing someone from every consequence of their choices.
- 12:53And it's hard to watch sometimes people go through the consequences of their choice.
- 12:58But consequences, like I said, with like your kids, they can be teachers, right?
- 13:03They can tell you what you don't want to do in the future because it's showing you that
- 13:07you don't like the consequences.
- 13:09You want to choose something else.
- 13:11So God often uses consequences to get our attention, right?
- 13:15Like in our own lives to show us that this is not the right path and we need to be redirected
- 13:21and get back on the path that God has invited us to grow in.
- 13:26But if we constantly remove every consequence and we may unintentionally stop the path that
- 13:32that person's on to get back to what God is trying to teach and to learn a lesson.
- 13:37And it doesn't mean, I'm not trying to say don't love people, and it doesn't mean to
- 13:42stop helping people for sure.
- 13:45It just means we need to ask a different question.
- 13:48Am I carrying a burden or am I carrying a backpack that belongs to someone else?
- 13:55So this brings us to the idea of responsible to, not responsible for.
- 14:01So this is taught in the boundaries book.
- 14:03We are responsible to others and for ourselves.
- 14:07So think about for a minute, we are responsible to others.
- 14:12We're called to love people, to serve, to encourage people, to pray for people, to support
- 14:18people, but we are not, not responsible for others.
- 14:23We're not responsible for their attitudes, right?
- 14:27For their choices, how they decide to grow or not grow, their obedience, their healing,
- 14:33their reactions.
- 14:35As moms, this can be life changing.
- 14:38If we really were to understand this, that I'm responsible for my time, I'm responsible
- 14:44for my choices, my stewardship, my obedience, but I am not responsible for making everyone
- 14:51happy.
- 14:52I am not responsible for fixing everyone's problems or carrying responsibilities that
- 14:58belong to someone else.
- 15:00So healthy boundaries allow us to stay compassionate.
- 15:04It protects our heart and our compassion without becoming responsible for someone else's life.
- 15:12And honestly, that's where we're going to experience freedom because many of us, we're
- 15:17exhausted, right?
- 15:18From not carrying what God assigned to us specifically, we're exhausted from carrying
- 15:24what He assigned to someone else.
- 15:27So I want to leave you with one question today.
- 15:31Whose backpack are you carrying?
- 15:34Maybe it's our kids' decisions or a friend's emotions.
- 15:39Maybe it's a family member's responsibility or guilt that you've carried around for years.
- 15:45So I want you to ask, am I helping carry a burden or am I carrying a backpack that
- 15:52belongs to someone else?
- 15:54Because Christianity calls us to carry burdens, but not everyone's backpack.
- 16:00Healthy boundaries aren't about loving people less.
- 16:03They're about loving people wisely.
- 16:06So friend, this week, I want you to spend a few minutes asking God to show you what
- 16:11He's actually entrusted to your care and what you've been trying to carry that belongs
- 16:17to someone else.
- 16:19Because freedom often begins with putting down a backpack that was never yours to pick
- 16:26up.
- 16:27And friend, I want you to remember, you don't have to carry everyone's backpack to be a
- 16:33good Christian, a good friend, or a good mom.
