- 0:05Hello and welcome back to another episode reminds it
- 0:07forecast obviously joined by Charles how are we today I'm.
- 0:11Very good. Thank you.
- 0:12How are you? I'm not great, I'm jacked up.
- 0:15I'm absolutely jacked up. My back is fucked top and
- 0:17bottom. I don't know what it is.
- 0:19I realized the other day because I got up in mourning and I was
- 0:23bending over doing something and I put my left hand on my knee
- 0:25and I was stood there for ages and I was like.
- 0:27I'm an old man, I'm 28 so. In natural response I decided to
- 0:35ignore that for a little bit longer and bought pre workout to
- 0:38make my workouts more motivated rather than actually just fix my
- 0:41body and be able to move. So I'm so excited to do that.
- 0:44But yeah, I probably will get it looked up because I fucking hate
- 0:48this. But on a more positive night,
- 0:50more positive things are happening in the.
- 0:52Sporting world, lots of positive things.
- 0:53Yeah, go go ahead. You've got a stack of.
- 0:55Things. I do have a stack of things.
- 0:57The women's rugby to start with, yeah, England's Red Roses made
- 1:01the final, that's this Saturday. They played France.
- 1:05They've basically been dominating all of their games
- 1:06and they've got so many unreal players.
- 1:08So what could possibly happen? Women won the EUR and now the
- 1:13England ladies could win the World Cup.
- 1:16Well we well the England win England 9S has won the World Cup
- 1:19as well previously. Was that the World Cup?
- 1:22No, no, that was the that was the year we won the World Cup as
- 1:25well two years ago. Mate, So they're all going
- 1:28back-to-back. At what point do we just cancel
- 1:31funding for the men's teams mate?
- 1:33How good we'd be if they had the funding of the men's.
- 1:34Teams, mate, that's the yeah, yeah.
- 1:36OK, cool. And then so if you're interested
- 1:39in that and you want to go see it live, if you're based around
- 1:41London, it's Twickenham, Twickenham 27th Head over there,
- 1:45go do some shouting, go watch some winning.
- 1:47Yeah, for sure. I didn't realise that Canada
- 1:50went any good at rugby because they're the other team in the
- 1:52final do. You know what?
- 1:53It's interesting because a lot of people give American slack
- 1:58for wanting to play rugby. Yeah, I was at Loughborough, as
- 2:01you know, and Penn State came over on rugby tour, women's
- 2:04rugby and absolutely slapped the shit out of Loughborough women's
- 2:08racket. Wow.
- 2:08Like, embarrassingly so. Interesting, isn't it?
- 2:11So yeah. They're actually not bad over
- 2:13there. It's the contact sport is still
- 2:14there I guess. What else is going on?
- 2:17I sent you a reel. There's a guy whose name I have
- 2:21forgotten. Perfect German bloke who took on
- 2:23his first ever high rocks. What was really interesting
- 2:26about it is he's a professional runner, so he runs 5K in 13
- 2:29minutes, 31 seconds, which is pretty much the exact same as
- 2:34the women's world record, but it's like 40.
- 2:37Seconds. Yeah, it's elite level.
- 2:39So yeah, really elite level. He's actually hoping this season
- 2:41to break into the elite 5K runners worldwide, so he decided
- 2:47to take it on as a bit of an offseason challenge.
- 2:49The thing is that was interesting is obviously he's
- 2:50going to nail the runs. The stations is going to be a
- 2:53problem. So I had a look at his splits.
- 2:55Any idea what you reckon he was running his one KS around?
- 2:58I it's unfair because I, I know his overall time, so I can
- 3:02probably make an estimated guess.
- 3:04I reckon he was, he was running three, the high three 30s.
- 3:10Cool. So we'll we'll go through this
- 3:12the same way everyone else. So everyone else needs to know I
- 3:16I thought he'd go still go sub hour because I knew his running
- 3:19would probably still be so fast. Again, to to run like A33013315K
- 3:24you're running like 2-2 minutes, 30 something.
- 3:29You mean it's 40 something per kilometre, which is just mental.
- 3:32So I thought if his runs are even remotely close to that then
- 3:35he'll have so much time to use stations he doesn't.
- 3:37Need doesn't matter if he's bad. He'll still go sub hour.
- 3:39That'll be really interesting what actually happened.
- 3:41He did an hour and 14 minutes. So it was a big difference.
- 3:44And I was like, oh, maybe he got got by the compromise running he
- 3:47did, but not by anyone else's standards.
- 3:51He he averaged 310. Oh my God.
- 3:53His fastest run was a three O 1 and his slowest run was a 317.
- 4:00Was the three O 1 his first run? No, no, it wasn't.
- 4:02I think, I think because this was Maastricht, I think all of
- 4:05the runs were pretty much the same.
- 4:08So yeah, he, he's 3/17 was the slowest run and that was after
- 4:12the burpees. The problem was the burpees took
- 4:157 minutes and then the Wool Wars I think he took like 9 minutes.
- 4:18My guy. Yeah, my guy.
- 4:20So yeah. Do you know what I'm.
- 4:22I'm relieved. I'm pleasantly surprised
- 4:25actually because it's the way that the sport's trending is
- 4:29trending towards runners and it's just a run of sport.
- 4:32So who can run the fastest? Because the sleds aren't now
- 4:35heavy enough to really affect any of the fast boys or fast
- 4:39girls. So there needs to be some sort
- 4:42of, I don't know, change in in weights or additional weights on
- 4:45the sled to make it even harder for the runners to be good at
- 4:48it. And I don't know if the new
- 4:50carpets going to make the sleds more slick.
- 4:53And as a result, it's even better for runners.
- 4:55So it's kind of still pleasantly surprising that someone of that
- 4:58elite ability of running can still be tripped up by the.
- 5:02Don't you think though? I was going to say, yeah, yeah,
- 5:06give him 12 weeks and see proper coaching.
- 5:08Yeah, because I did see, I did see a couple of videos of how he
- 5:12moves and it's not particularly efficient on any of the
- 5:15stations. So if you can shore that up a
- 5:17little bit, then. And and again with like the
- 5:19whole thing of racing strategy and pacing and understanding
- 5:22when to rest, when not to rest and sort of thing.
- 5:24Like, and that was his first race literally.
- 5:25Yeah. Yeah.
- 5:26So it's still actually quite impressive.
- 5:28Obviously the running was insanely impressive, but I would
- 5:32be interested for him to do more.
- 5:33He probably won't though, because he's he actually has a
- 5:35chance of being one of the world's best ever 5K time, so he
- 5:38probably isn't going to turn his head around at high rocks just
- 5:40yet. But yeah, interesting
- 5:43experiment, yeah. I've got more things I've
- 5:46actually just remembered. You see that, Fred Curly has
- 5:49said he's going to do the enhanced games.
- 5:53Yeah, I sent that to you, didn't I?
- 5:54Yeah, And my response to. You is a little bit interesting.
- 5:57I said. I don't think it's going to
- 5:58change much. And what I meant was he is
- 6:01actually under review at the moment.
- 6:03Yeah, for taking performances, Avengers anyone?
- 6:05Or what? Might as well, Yeah, I might as
- 6:07well get paid for it if I'm going.
- 6:08To if I'm going to do it, but it is interesting to see that more
- 6:10and more like top level athletes, people like household
- 6:14names in the world of sprinting are going to start moving across
- 6:18to the enhanced game. It's going to become the retired
- 6:20league. I think so, yeah.
- 6:22Because I like they're going to be faster than the Undertire.
- 6:24There was a British swimmer as well, I think, announced that he
- 6:27was going to go and do that. I can't remember his name.
- 6:29But staying on the topic of athletics, it's been the world
- 6:32champs over the last couple of weeks, which has been all
- 6:34consuming for me. The big ones, if you haven't
- 6:38watched any of the world champs, I'd go back and rewatch the
- 6:41women's 3000 meter steeplechase final, which sounds really
- 6:45niche, but it was like one of the most exciting races I've
- 6:47ever seen. And everyone fell over and
- 6:49everyone fell in the water and it was, it was really good to
- 6:51watch really fast time. The other one, Keely Hodgkinson,
- 6:54ran in the 800 meter final. I won't do any spoiler alerts.
- 6:59What I will say is that was one of the most stressful races I've
- 7:02ever watched. Like for just for sitting in
- 7:04front of the TV for just two minutes, it was stressful
- 7:07because obviously she's I think she's been in now 4 consecutive
- 7:11major finals through Europeans worlds, Olympics, that kind of
- 7:15thing. So she's had a really good run
- 7:16of it. She's obviously reigning Olympic
- 7:18champion. She was going in hot favor.
- 7:21They went out so hard. Like the commentators are like,
- 7:24this seems a little bit suicidal.
- 7:26They ran through, and this might not mean anyone anything for
- 7:29people who don't know much about track running, but they ran
- 7:31through 226 seconds. They ran through 400 in like 54
- 7:37seconds, which I think would have qualified some of the girls
- 7:40for the four hundreds final or at least like the semis.
- 7:44And then they're getting round to about maybe 200, two, 150 to
- 7:48go. Keely's still on the front and I
- 7:50think in her head she's gone far.
- 7:52This is fast. I need to kick now, otherwise
- 7:54I'm going to get left and dust. So she kicked with 250 to go,
- 7:57and then you just see her down the home straight and the wheels
- 8:00just start falling off. She managed to.
- 8:03And managed to potentially not die.
- 8:05You don't know what happened. I'm not going to.
- 8:06Tell you what happened there. The other really exciting one,
- 8:09and this will be the last thing I talk about athletics, was the
- 8:11men's 1500 meter final. So you had three Brits going in
- 8:15it. You had Neil Gaudy, you had Jake
- 8:17Whiteman, you had Josh Kerr. Josh Kerr, reigning world
- 8:22champion Jake Whiteman won the World Championships in Oregon I
- 8:26think in 2022. I think then we were kind of
- 8:32denied the opportunity to watch Jake and Josh run head to I
- 8:45think Neil Gaudy won the British champs, so they were all in like
- 8:47flying form, Yakubinga Brits and hadn't made it through the
- 8:51heats. The reigning world champion,
- 8:53Olympic champion, Cole Hocker, he had been disqualified in the
- 8:56heats for pushing. And then their favorite was
- 8:59Niels Laos, who's this Dutch kid who's rapid amazing.
- 9:03They all went out so hard as well.
- 9:05Josh Kerr got boxed in. And then I'll you just go and
- 9:08watch. It was a really good final to
- 9:09watch. Joe I, I think this is the
- 9:12really annoying thing from my perspective.
- 9:14I used to absolutely love watching the athletics world
- 9:17gems and especially like the Olympics on live TV and I've
- 9:20grown up because of the whole TV license thing.
- 9:23The TV license to watch anything live, whether that's YouTube
- 9:27even I've just like it's been not watched it difficult.
- 9:30Yeah, because I'm obviously a legal abiding citizen that never
- 9:32would ever stream anything illegally.
- 9:34But just like it's not as convenient as just switching on
- 9:37the TV and having it and I I hate that because I used to act.
- 9:40I used to camp out in front. Of the TV yeah or or refrain to
- 9:43say that this was all on the. BB this is on the BBC with a
- 9:46paid for TV license. Yeah, of.
- 9:47Course the the the main problem I had this year was because it
- 9:51was in Japan, it was in Tokyo. Just the timings are a bit
- 9:54weird. So if you're at work you can't
- 9:56watch it through the middle of the day.
- 9:58Luckily I don't have a job so I can wait your eventual.
- 10:02Come and Read is a professional podcast.
- 10:05Is so you can just sit in front of the TV all day and and watch
- 10:07the world champs, which was it was really, really good.
- 10:10Yeah, I think it's a bit sad actually now because technically
- 10:13we're in autumn. I know.
- 10:14So is that Sunday sport? Yeah, the first day of autumn,
- 10:17The. Summer of sport has technically
- 10:18come to, I know, but in more positive news, what does that
- 10:23mean? That means that we're getting
- 10:25closer and closer to the 12th of October total of October.
- 10:29What a what a segue that you've caught me off guard.
- 10:31Yeah. And and you aren't ready for
- 10:33that. So 12th of October is the rocks
- 10:37SIM Hyroxim. So we for those of you that
- 10:40maybe didn't listen a few episodes back, we hosted Hyroxim
- 10:43down at Unit 9. ALMS deeply successful.
- 10:46Yeah, it was. Really.
- 10:47Kind of annoying me. So nothing went wrong.
- 10:48Yeah, that was really fun. So we're doing it again by
- 10:51public popular demand and it's on the 12th of October.
- 10:56But if you're interested then do you know what there'll be a link
- 10:59in the description. Go ahead get your tickets.
- 11:01You can do it double S solos, you can do pro open, whichever
- 11:04you prefer. If it's you've never done a
- 11:06higher ox race and you kind of want to see what it feels like,
- 11:08this is exactly a higher ox race.
- 11:10We can safely say that the people that were competing last
- 11:12time got some went faster than their previous time, some went
- 11:16slower than their previous time. So we know we are super
- 11:18accurate. Yeah, like it.
- 11:20It is. Completely replicable.
- 11:22And we will boast about the fact that we have all of the
- 11:25stations, so we have real sleds. We do push ample, push ample.
- 11:30And yeah, so you will come away from that knowing exactly where
- 11:32you're at, and you will be able to enjoy as much, to enjoy
- 11:35hierarchs. And we're gonna have good vibes
- 11:37and we'll both be there. And so and tickets are already
- 11:40live. Tickets are already live so.
- 11:42Do do go through? Because with the way that we run
- 11:45it, we don't have like a group system where we send 20 of you
- 11:48off at a time. You go off one of a time or one
- 11:51pair at a time. So tickets will go and those
- 11:54slots will fill up. So I wouldn't be slow in making
- 11:57a decision. Get one, find a friend, do it
- 11:59with them, do it on your own, whichever, and we will see you
- 12:02there. Now on the point of that, the
- 12:05reason for doing this in the 1st place, go ahead, it's your
- 12:08favorite thing. Well, I wouldn't say it's my
- 12:11favorite thing, but it's it's never the other benchmarking and
- 12:16testing your fitness to give you a little bit more data to help
- 12:21kind of guide your training and help you improve and make your
- 12:24training a little bit more efficient.
- 12:25And that's the reason why you do a simulation slash.
- 12:29You just want to have a good time and have fun.
- 12:30That's allowed too. But using the simulation and the
- 12:34results that you get from it and the data you can take from it to
- 12:37figure out how you might guide your training over the next X
- 12:41amount of weeks. The beauty with the one that
- 12:43we're doing on the 12th, I think it was, I can't remember what I
- 12:46said yesterday, but it was like it was enough amount of weeks
- 12:49away from London High rocks. I think it was 7.
- 12:51Seven weeks, I think you're right, yeah.
- 12:53Or six or seven weekends before London High rocks.
- 12:55So if you're racing in London, well, that's the the race you've
- 12:58got your eye on. There's definitely enough time
- 13:01off the back of that SIM to make some tangible changes, to make
- 13:04sure that when you get to the start line in London, you've
- 13:07done everything you can to put yourself in the best position
- 13:10for getting the the best time possible.
- 13:12And one of the things we talk about a lot actually is race
- 13:14experience. Yeah.
- 13:14And I think one of the things that you can get from some other
- 13:17simulations that I've done is you can learn that you paced
- 13:20yourself wrong. Not necessarily if it's not the
- 13:23exact same as a hierarchy. In the context of well, I've
- 13:25paced my lunge is wrong, which has ruined my wobbles because in
- 13:30some simulations they don't do them quite the same way and
- 13:33might be a static sort of lunge rather than a walking one which
- 13:35uses a bit more balance. Or you might not get all of the
- 13:37run between the and. So you're not really seeing the
- 13:40same level of fatigue where I. I think that like the the main
- 13:43one definitely is the really specific fatigue that you feel
- 13:48off the back of the LED, whether that's push or pull, that if
- 13:52you're not actually incorporating that into your
- 13:54training or you're not having the opportunity to see what that
- 13:57looks like at race intensity on the day, that will slap you in
- 14:01the face, especially if it's your first time racing.
- 14:03Realistically, even even for people that have raced quite a
- 14:06lot, the danger area is the sleds for sure.
- 14:09You you can. Oh yeah, you just ruin your
- 14:11race. That's the hardest part of the
- 14:12race. If you know you have done the
- 14:14sleds to your correct pacing and the rest of the race is kind of
- 14:17the game and you can start playing Ollie Russell, who's now
- 14:21an Elite 15 double S pair with Charlie Bosher.
- 14:23He says that the race for him starts from the rowing machine.
- 14:28He steadies himself through and then the rowing machine is where
- 14:30he settles himself. And then the back end is where
- 14:32he starts racing and pushing himself the first bit.
- 14:35And you can actually look at his races.
- 14:36The splits are so consistent for the first part up to the rowing
- 14:39machine and then the difference comes after.
- 14:41That's on how he how fatigued. So yeah, it's a, it's a good way
- 14:46of figuring that out and actually being able to push
- 14:48these sleds, feel that resistance and fatigue and learn
- 14:51how to pace that a bit better is massive.
- 14:54But one of the things that's interesting about benchmarking
- 14:56is, I mean, I have not been quiet about the fact that I hate
- 14:59it. I absolutely.
- 15:01I want to know from your perspective what you think are
- 15:06the best ones to be doing, but also I want to know from your
- 15:09perspective as an athlete, what do you think is worse?
- 15:12Oh, here we go. A1 mile test run, a 5K run, a 5K
- 15:20ski or a 2K row. These are getting weirdly
- 15:23specific. Do you know what there?
- 15:26Sorry, or an FTP on a bike. OK, there's lots of options
- 15:31there. There's lots to depict.
- 15:32The thing I I like that you say is that you actually actively
- 15:36dislike testing. And the reason why you dislike
- 15:39testing is because it's painful and it's difficult and you have
- 15:42to push yourself really hard. My other, my other like tag on
- 15:45top of that is that I don't feel like I can train.
- 15:48Like it fatigues me so much that then I don't feel like I can
- 15:51just get back in. Training, So that's, that's
- 15:52interesting and that's why you have to be tactical with when
- 15:55you are doing your benchmarking and when you're doing your
- 15:56testing. If you're doing a SIM the
- 15:59weekend before you're racing your high rocks, obviously
- 16:01that's an incorrect time to do it because you won't have enough
- 16:04time to recover. That's why you want to do your
- 16:06testing at the beginning of your block.
- 16:07So say you've got 12 weeks, that's when you benchmark and
- 16:11then you do 8 to 12 weeks of of training typically before you
- 16:15retest. Now in the context of high
- 16:17rocks, if you do your benchmark as your simulation and then you
- 16:22get all of the data from that, you probably don't need to then
- 16:24retest until you get to the day of your race.
- 16:28When we're talking about all of these test metrics that you've
- 16:30just given me, let's say that's out of context of high rocks.
- 16:34That's just in your general training.
- 16:36That might be offseason training.
- 16:37That could be in your accumulation phase or your
- 16:39intensification phase in your training block that that will
- 16:43actually be retested because otherwise you won't see if
- 16:46you've made any tangible progress.
- 16:47But let's break those down. I can't even remember the list
- 16:50of those you said. If we talk about.
- 16:52You could choose one between these two, but for the running,
- 16:54yeah, it was a 5K run test or a one mile run test.
- 16:58It's so hard to compare the two because the the intensity is
- 17:02always relative. So if you do them to your best,
- 17:05your ability, when you get to the end, you're still going to
- 17:08feel as horrible as probably you would either one of them.
- 17:13So if you flat out mile or flat out 5K, you get to the end.
- 17:16Obviously those flat outs are relative.
- 17:18You get to the end and you still feel absolutely smashed just
- 17:21because the 5K is going to be a lot longer than doing your one
- 17:26mile a couple of minutes versus like 10s of minutes.
- 17:31I would say that you're having to withstand the discomfort for
- 17:34longer in the 5K, but because of the the adaptation and the
- 17:40intensity in the one mile that sensation during it is probably
- 17:45more painful. But I only have to withstand it
- 17:47for. Because I'd say the 1st 2K of a
- 17:495K, you're kind of OK, yeah. And then the last, because you
- 17:54know you're at the end, even though it's painful, you can
- 17:56deal with it, but it's like the 3 1/2 to 4 1/2.
- 18:00So is that actually pretty much still like a mile that it hurts?
- 18:03Yeah. So that's I'm I'm I'm I'm
- 18:05tending towards saying that the mild is probably more painful.
- 18:09OK. I think, I think probably the
- 18:11same because I think the speed at which you would go off a bit
- 18:14like you were saying about Keely when you're in the 800, like
- 18:16it's going to take you 400 meters, if that to realize fuck,
- 18:19this is hard. I don't know if I've got this.
- 18:22And with a 5K, you typically don't go off at a speed where
- 18:25you then immediately start questioning about this or not.
- 18:28You might be like. Having having a background in
- 18:31speed and speed running like 400 meters the the pain you get
- 18:37doing those sorts of efforts is just like UN unlike anything
- 18:40else. And more recently, I've done
- 18:42longer running 5 KS and I've tested those recently.
- 18:47And yes, it's, it's horrible when you're doing it, but I
- 18:50never get to the end and like holding my head because my head
- 18:53is throbbing. And you get that really sick
- 18:55sense that you might feel a little bit sick.
- 18:57But after 400 meter training or probably a mile effort lying on
- 19:01the floor, feet in the air and that feeling of the lactic just,
- 19:04and there's no position that you can lie in that makes you feel
- 19:07better. And you roll onto your back and
- 19:09it's, it's still as bad and you roll onto your side and it's
- 19:11getting worse. And then you go on all fours and
- 19:13it's even worse. And you try and stand up and it
- 19:15just progressively gets worse. And then it it like
- 19:18compoundingly gets worse over the next like 10-15 minutes of
- 19:21you trying to recover. You don't really get that off
- 19:23the back of a 5K just because the intensity is so high.
- 19:28So between those two, I'd say one mile.
- 19:30It'd be really interesting to know what people think and also
- 19:33like sort. Of thing to put in the comment.
- 19:34And like the running community who has way more experience than
- 19:37those testing in than I do. But then if we, if we look then
- 19:40at some of the other disciplines that we've mentioned notorious
- 19:422K row, 5K ski, an FTP on a bike.
- 19:46So again, we we spoke about it in the episode with Roscoe, but
- 19:49an FTP on a bike is your. Functional threshold power.
- 19:53Of course, way in future, I know there's threshold power, but
- 19:56I've got a functional bit. You do 20 minutes, pretty much
- 20:01the Max effort in terms of watts on a bike.
- 20:04And then your average is your FTP score and you can use that
- 20:06for training. So yeah, I mean, if we quickly
- 20:10drop in again, those guys on the Tour de France.
- 20:12There's like a power to weight ratio weight in kilos, power in
- 20:15watts. The guys on Tour de France can
- 20:17hold six to seven times their their body weight in watts,
- 20:20which is actually mental. And the thing The thing is as
- 20:22well is like, I immediately was like, wow, they're holding 700
- 20:25watts. No, they don't weigh 100 kilos.
- 20:26No, so it's actually kind of more absurd when you start
- 20:30thinking about it. These guys weigh 6570 years,
- 20:34some of them and they're putting down 400 plus watts is.
- 20:38Nuts. Yeah, I think like you say, the
- 20:41guys on the Tour have that that weight to what ratio?
- 20:45Only a handful of like 6 or 7. Like Lance Armstrong in his peak
- 20:50when he was on as much gear as you can think of, he was like
- 20:53pushing close to 7 watts per kilo.
- 20:55And I think Tarry Pergacha now is on similar numbers.
- 20:59Let's. Save that what you will.
- 21:02But like only a very handful of them are riding at that those
- 21:05kind of numbers. The, the thing I'd say with
- 21:09because again, the stimulus and the, the sensations that you
- 21:13feel across all of the different machines and when you're running
- 21:16a very, very different and very specific to that machine.
- 21:19And the thing I'd say about doing a test on a bike, yes, an
- 21:22FTP is a really, really savage test.
- 21:25But the savagery is like the legs burning and then obviously
- 21:30you get a little bit of lungs when you're on the ski in the
- 21:32row. It's like all-encompassing
- 21:34everything in your whole body. Same with running really.
- 21:37And I think running probably jacks your heart rate up the
- 21:40most out of all of them. But on the bike, you have the
- 21:43ability to actually just like settle in and just start to
- 21:45process the pain a little bit better because your upper body
- 21:48is doing nothing. I think you get that like
- 21:50calmness in the upper body, which mentally helps you, I
- 21:54don't know, endure the pain a little bit more.
- 21:57And in the duration of like the 20 minutes, yeah, your legs do
- 22:00start to burn, but it's not like you're doing Max out sprints on
- 22:03the echo bike, which is again, a whole nother another
- 22:06conversation. So I don't want to say that the
- 22:09FTP is an easier test because it's not.
- 22:11They're all probably equally as difficult if you're putting 100%
- 22:14effort into it. But I'd much prefer to do an FTP
- 22:17than a 2K row, and I'll probably put 2K row at the top because
- 22:21that's just something that that even now thinking about it makes
- 22:24me feel a bit nervous. I think because I've, I've
- 22:27obviously done 5K ski with you, which is something we'll talk
- 22:29about with like the process of benchmarking to improving that
- 22:32and how to train. But I have done the 2K row.
- 22:37I'm trying to think if I've done it twice, I'd definitely done it
- 22:41once because I remember being on that particular floor in peer
- 22:43gym in Epsom and then you bottled it for the retest.
- 22:47Didn't want to do it again. You might as have done it twice
- 22:49if you didn't have to have done it yes, and I think I I did
- 22:52improve. I've got in my head that I did
- 22:53the first time I did it I did 631 and then the next time I did
- 22:57it I was like 627, which wasn't that much but of of an
- 23:01improvement and then and then I'm now thinking I don't really
- 23:04vividly remember. I don't really remember the
- 23:06retest but like who would want to do it anyway because Grimm.
- 23:10But I I also find the 2K rotor so funny because how quickly you
- 23:16can bend yourself to the point where you like you said you
- 23:19can't stand no position makes it better and like your whole body
- 23:23just goes and shut down and I could feel it two days later.
- 23:25Yeah, the thing that like gets me overwhelming more than
- 23:29everything. It's just like the lactic in my
- 23:31forearms and my grip. It's just like so painful to
- 23:35keep holding onto the handle. Like nothing else is bad apart
- 23:38from that. So just like having to deal with
- 23:41the lactic in your forearms, your grip hurting your lungs,
- 23:44just shouting at you, the heart like right up in your chest.
- 23:47And I think the last time I did a 2K block, I did it on the ski
- 23:51egg and when I retested that was the highest I've ever seen my
- 23:56heart rate. And I've got my chest strap
- 23:58connected to the PM 5 and I'm seeing this, the heart rate go
- 24:03from like high one 80s, which I've I've seen that frequently
- 24:08in my training. And then it keeps going And
- 24:10usually it stops around the high one 80s.
- 24:12And then I like give up because it's too painful.
- 24:14And then it just kept creeping up, creeping up.
- 24:16I saw like 190 and I'm like, here we go to the point where I
- 24:19wanted to stop, but because there are people in the gym
- 24:22around the ski screaming at me. I was like, OK, and can't stop
- 24:25now. And it was 191.
- 24:28We're getting to like the last 200 meters, 192 we're creeping
- 24:31up to 193. I'm like, I'm probably going to
- 24:33die like this is this is the jet where I die and like that's just
- 24:38yeah, pain that. And and then that was no, that
- 24:41was actually the start of the block.
- 24:42That was my benchmarking and my goal was to go sub 7 and it was
- 24:47700.1. So I was just like and that and
- 24:53I just, that was the most I'd push myself in probably ever on
- 24:58the skier and to the point where I was like, there's no point in
- 25:02me doing this block because I am not retesting.
- 25:04I just I'm I will never do a 2K testing.
- 25:07You're not supposed to sandbag either.
- 25:09So you, like, you can't really. Yeah.
- 25:11You you kind of have to muck yourself and then admit that
- 25:14you're going to do it again. Yeah, that's hard.
- 25:16Yeah. And that's that's mentally why I
- 25:18hate testing. Yeah, that's why now it's so
- 25:20difficult and there's so much like prestige around 2K testing
- 25:24in the in like the world rowing, Because once you've experienced
- 25:27it once, you know what that feeling is to then make yourself
- 25:31go and sit back on the rower and test again.
- 25:33That's that's nothing to do with your physical.
- 25:35That is purely your psycho. And you're like, I'm willing to
- 25:38do this. Part of me, part of me is like,
- 25:42yeah. Yeah.
- 25:43But then when it actually comes to doing it, every excuse in the
- 25:47but I would be the longest warm up.
- 25:49Oh, I don't have time. Yeah, it it takes 6 minutes, 6
- 25:52minutes on the Angus. I don't know or you.
- 25:54You start even because I've had this previously when I've been
- 25:56testing 2K row, you start and some of my clients also the same
- 26:01and you kind of oh, you're settling in.
- 26:02You like OK, we've done 500 meters.
- 26:04Now we're getting to the business end and it starts to
- 26:07hurt really about 800 meters in and you've still got 1200 meters
- 26:11to go and that 1200 down to 800. There's kind of like 400 meters
- 26:15in the middle. It's like that's pretty dirty.
- 26:17And then it starts to just ramp up, ramp up, ramp up.
- 26:19If you can get to 500 meters to go, you're home and dry.
- 26:22You just have to hold on for everything you've got.
- 26:24But to get from 1200 down to 800 seems like such a miniscule
- 26:28amount of meters, but that's where the majority of people are
- 26:32bottling it because it's so painful and you've got.
- 26:34Like it's. Taking.
- 26:36It's taking so long, like the the worst bit about that.
- 26:38And this is what I always found when I was like doing planks
- 26:41when I was younger, I discovered how bad planking was.
- 26:43When you really go for it is like, you'll do the thing where
- 26:46you're like, I'm not going to look at the time.
- 26:47Yeah, So I'm not going to look at the distance, not going to
- 26:49look at it, Not going to look at it.
- 26:52OK, I've I've done enough stroke here.
- 26:53I deserve I deserve one look. OK, I've done 30 meters.
- 26:56Like literally it just doesn't move a needle.
- 26:59Doesn't. Move.
- 27:01Let's talk about this. I did something.
- 27:03Well, I was about to say really interesting.
- 27:05It's probably not interesting to anyone.
- 27:08I was doing some Zone 2 training the other day and I was bouncing
- 27:12between the C2 bike, the rower and the skierg.
- 27:15The C2 bike was like 5:00-ish minutes, just easy pace.
- 27:19That was my opportunity to drink water, do my thing, recover a
- 27:22little bit. And then it was 1K row, 1K ski
- 27:26on repeats. And what I did after my first
- 27:30maybe 2 efforts, I covered the monitor on the ski and I wanted
- 27:33to see if I could get just intuitively 1K on the dot just
- 27:38from the feel of the strokes, counting the strokes, my
- 27:41breathing, my heart rate. I didn't have the clock on the
- 27:42wall, so I don't know how long I've been doing.
- 27:45It's funny because I was skiing and I was counting my strokes.
- 27:47I was like, it feels like I've been doing this for a long time,
- 27:50Like longer than like 4:00-ish minutes, 4 1/2 minutes, which is
- 27:53kind of the pace I'm skiing at. Finish Pulled the T-shirt off
- 27:571025 meters. Pretty good.
- 28:00That's that's pretty good. That's.
- 28:01Like the pool hire with handshake.
- 28:03Yeah, fair enough. That's very cool.
- 28:05And it's like, it's a really good challenge.
- 28:06And I'd, I'd like to see if other people had the intuition
- 28:10to be able to do those kind of distances because I, it's like a
- 28:13TikTok trend or an Instagram trend where it's like, see if
- 28:15you can run 1K exactly. I don't know if you've seen
- 28:18people doing that. People do like 5K runs.
- 28:20And see if you can stop banging. Exactly on it what was really
- 28:24annoying I last year. So in my old job a girl I used
- 28:28to work with is is a rower. Great rower and she had seen
- 28:32videos of me training with you and had been like, you're
- 28:34wrapping me sorting out. So she was kind enough to
- 28:37actually come along. Coach must be useless.
- 28:39She's kind of knocked out to come down one day and like help
- 28:42me out with it and then help me out with the technique.
- 28:44And it was really good. And at the end I was like, OK,
- 28:46well you're obviously a lot better at rowing than me, but
- 28:49can we play a game? I want to do the game where you
- 28:51cover the monitor and you have to get to 100 meters closest
- 28:55wins. And I was like, we'll do the
- 28:56best three. First time, she's like, I've
- 28:59never done this before. This is great.
- 29:00Yeah, 100 meters. Yeah, wild.
- 29:03Second time, I got 9800 meters. She got really nailed it.
- 29:08Yeah. And I was like, go for three for
- 29:10three. And she, she did it.
- 29:12Wow, that is impressive. It was.
- 29:13It was. It was so annoying.
- 29:15I'd like I'd like to know if someone who is a rower if she
- 29:18was counting strokes or just intuitively she knew.
- 29:21Her reaction said that she just stopped.
- 29:24It happened to be right. But I imagine that she's deep
- 29:28down because she rose. So, I mean, she's she was most
- 29:30of the time when I was coming to work.
- 29:32And people don't realize this goes on behind the scenes for
- 29:35people that are into like rowing and other sports like this.
- 29:37But she would come into work. I'd be like, you should be like,
- 29:40yeah, pretty tired. But you row this morning.
- 29:41Yeah, yeah, yeah. What did you have?
- 29:44Oh, we had three by 30 minutes on on the rowing machine. 3 by
- 29:4930 yeah as well. When you think about sitting on
- 29:50a rowing machine for 30 minutes, that's the wrong time.
- 29:52I try not to do that. But then doing 3, avoid three of
- 29:56them with a 5 minute resting. Yeah, they're doing 90 minutes.
- 29:59It's, it's really interesting because and like again, we, we
- 30:01can talk about this and I'd love to talk about this for the whole
- 30:03day, but one of my clients, he goes to Union, the states
- 30:08College in the States. And he was trying out for the
- 30:11college rowing team and just looking at some of the tests
- 30:14that they've been doing and the intricacies around stroke rate
- 30:18and, and different sorts of things in power and speed and
- 30:20endurance. Like it is wild.
- 30:22And there's so much importance and prestige held around the 2K.
- 30:27And if you can row 2K, well then you're probably making the first
- 30:31team 8. And like some of the boys who
- 30:33are getting selected for that top team are like no one is
- 30:36rowing slower than 615 / 2 K and like.
- 30:39For for people that don't haven't done one and don't have
- 30:41context, that is insanely yeah, like ridiculous and like.
- 30:45It's not unusual for people to be rowing sub 615.
- 30:48I think sub 6:15 is also like the standard.
- 30:51Like if you want to be on Team GB, you have to have a 2K erg
- 30:54under that. Lots of them are getting close
- 30:57to 6 minutes. There'll be some of the really
- 30:59big boys who like go sub 6. I've forgotten what the world
- 31:02record is. The world record is 5.
- 31:03It's 5 as I'd imagine it's probably somewhere in the five
- 31:0640s. It's like.
- 31:07Who's brother that's got it? I'd imagine it's a rowing
- 31:10specialist. There's a guy called Big Phil 90
- 31:12on Instagram. Is he the guy?
- 31:14He's my hero. If you don't follow Big Phil 90,
- 31:16he's just also he does a lot of like, power output on the ski
- 31:19erg. And to get a sense of how big,
- 31:22big Phil is, he's like, he looks over the top of the ski erg when
- 31:26he grabs the handles and like, you're a tall guy.
- 31:29Yeah, yeah, I'm like, you're not.
- 31:30No, he's he's a monster. So this is the guy that
- 31:33basically tries to row with his low stroke rate as possible and
- 31:37just rips the handle out of the thing.
- 31:39Is that him? I'm sure some of his trainings
- 31:42like capped rate because. Like, you know, because I've
- 31:44seen a guy who managed to row under a 110 per 500 meter split
- 31:50with a stroke rate of under 20. Wow.
- 31:52Yeah, I mean that could be him, but he is like a a large man.
- 31:55The bigger you are for that kind of thing, the better.
- 31:57Sure. And but like you, we go down the
- 31:59rabbit hole of them, the world record for the marathon row.
- 32:04I, I don't want to be misquoted, but that is like a ridiculous,
- 32:07ridiculous pace. It's like 140 is probably
- 32:09average, maybe faster. For a marathon ski, it's 142.
- 32:13Horrible, horrible. She's insane.
- 32:15Yeah. And then you look at the
- 32:16technique of it though, and it looks far more like Nordic
- 32:19skiing, which is probably a was curious.
- 32:20Yeah, designed. It's got like his feet clipped.
- 32:22Here, and none of this butterfly.
- 32:23God, we need to talk about roller ski.
- 32:27Well, what what we need to do though is obviously what happens
- 32:30after a benchmark is the training to actually improve
- 32:32because it's all well and good doing a test this week and then
- 32:34knowing you don't have to certainly 8 weeks, you might as
- 32:36well make it worth it. And when we were doing a 5K
- 32:41block where some of the other boys that I trained with were
- 32:43doing rowing machine and you were basically leading this for
- 32:46us, I was doing the ski. The glory days.
- 32:49The glory days. So I was doing the ski and it it
- 32:51varied in terms of what I noticed was going on and you can
- 32:56confirm or deny whether that was going on was on a weekly basis.
- 33:01We would do essentially 2 bits of homework, which would be two
- 33:04sessions and one of them would be I would notice would be like
- 33:09a higher intensity, shorter interval and the other one would
- 33:14be a longer interval. Not as long as the entire 5K,
- 33:18but a longer version of an interval sort of 2K at a time
- 33:21with a longer rest but not necessarily as fast.
- 33:26And the interesting thing was that each week the total volume
- 33:31amount increasing so that it basically I was doing more of
- 33:35it, which I noticed was making my stroke on the ski way more
- 33:40smooth. And I felt and the people that
- 33:44know a lot about those machines will think about the catch like
- 33:47when you're starting the flywheel spinning again, you
- 33:50start to time that better with the when when you pull.
- 33:53And that is a huge thing. And I know now if I got on a
- 33:56ski, I haven't been skiing again enough recently to feel
- 33:58comfortable in catching the catch moment every single time.
- 34:01Whereas when I was doing whatever it was 3 by 2K and then
- 34:07I think it was 8 by like 650 in the same week.
- 34:10I'm obviously doing so much there where I'm also thinking so
- 34:13much about getting the getting my pace.
- 34:15I'm trying to be as efficient as possible.
- 34:17I'm really being smooth. It becomes so much more
- 34:20intuitive. And I think this is all what
- 34:22what I'll say now is it's all very specific to that 2K block,
- 34:26but you'll have got a lot more out of that in like the first
- 34:31block you did because your discrepancy and technique you,
- 34:35you close the gap between like what your technique was
- 34:39originally to where you had nice technique which was much more
- 34:42efficient. Whereas because you now have
- 34:44good technique on the ski erg for you to make such a large
- 34:47improvement over 2K would be much harder.
- 34:50And the faster you get, obviously the same with
- 34:52anything, the harder it is to get those incremental gains.
- 34:54But what we were trying to do across those sessions, and like
- 34:58I said, this is specific to 2K, you probably have three
- 35:00different things you look at. You've got speed, endurance and
- 35:03power. I think maybe over the course of
- 35:05eight weeks, we did 2 power sessions where it was like we
- 35:08worked in watts and it was basically like 90% of your 10
- 35:14second Max output of watts. And you did that maybe 20
- 35:18efforts. If you missed the target watts,
- 35:21you rested a whole extra effort before you recover again.
- 35:24And it's like that's, that's like the the probably the least
- 35:27important, but you do need to develop explosivity and power,
- 35:31especially over 2K, which is sounds like a lot and a long
- 35:35time to sit on a on an erg, but it is actually like a relatively
- 35:38short distance. Yeah.
- 35:39Well. Those those power sessions as
- 35:40well, the 10 seconds, the 10 seconds is nothing.
- 35:43The amount of time that I'm spending talking now is nearing
- 35:4610 seconds. I've we're now doing it.
- 35:48Ever felt more sick? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:50Even though like most of the time I'm resting, the rest just
- 35:53went so quick. Well, this comes back to like
- 35:56the the one mile versus 5K. Yeah, like the shorter you go
- 36:00doesn't necessarily mean it's easier.
- 36:01It's just like that explosive power and energy system you use
- 36:05creates so much waste product, lactic acid, that your body just
- 36:09really struggles to remove it. And that's the sensations or the
- 36:12symptoms you get of that is the feeling sick.
- 36:15But the majority of our time we spent on the 2K was between
- 36:18endurance and speed. So like a speed endurance
- 36:21session, I get in trouble for saying that those words
- 36:23together. But speed, endurance, and those
- 36:25were the things where we were doing closer to like I'd say a
- 36:31total session. You're a mounting a lot more
- 36:34distance than just 2K, but the efforts themselves were shorter.
- 36:38So you mentioned the 6:50, another really classic session
- 36:42is like 10 by 500 off 1 minute and trying to stay as consistent
- 36:45as possible across all of the five hundreds.
- 36:47I'm pretty sure we did that or 8 to 10 efforts at 500, but
- 36:50similar that where we can develop speed and we'd be using
- 36:54your average pace from the test minus X amount of seconds,
- 36:58probably 3 to 5 seconds. So you're actually rowing faster
- 37:01than test pace and everything that we're doing is try or
- 37:03skiing rather, or everything we're doing is trying to make
- 37:06the pacing feel more intuitive. So when you do come to retest,
- 37:10you have a little bit more feeling and, and and like an
- 37:13inherent pace. So this is a bit of AI guess a
- 37:18confession, but when I do, when I have done work on the ergs and
- 37:23that's that sort of focus where I'm looking over a period of
- 37:26time and I go, OK, that was what the benchmark benchmark is or,
- 37:30or even I know I'm roughly around there because I haven't
- 37:32done my best. I don't want to.
- 37:34I would quite like to be here. I think that is quite sensibly
- 37:37achievable. If I'm on a Nerg, I'd be like,
- 37:38I'm going to take. I mean, what we did for the ski
- 37:42with me last year was we want to take 3 seconds per 500 meters
- 37:45off. So 30 seconds over, which is a
- 37:48big jump. The 5K which is which is quite a
- 37:50big jump. Please say I did it but we then.
- 37:54Like a lot of that is attributed to your improvement in
- 37:57technique. I want to say that, yeah, yeah,
- 37:59yeah. No, no, no doubt, just to caveat
- 38:01that. But then, but then when it comes
- 38:03to running, and I feel like a lot of people look at this in a
- 38:06different way. I don't know if you do because
- 38:09you program it and you coach it where you do your own 5K test
- 38:14and your own 5K test and then you would say, OK, I want to be
- 38:1930 seconds quicker in eight weeks.
- 38:21Whereas what I would get guilty of doing is I want my 5K time to
- 38:25be that. So I need to train.
- 38:28You're not necessarily at that pace, but I need to be training
- 38:31for that rather than I need to train this differential.
- 38:35I think that's like the way that the that people's minds are
- 38:38wired, especially like people who are inherently competitive
- 38:42and want a certain time. It's like I want there's certain
- 38:45benchmarks like sub 25K or a sub three hour marathon seems to be
- 38:49the big one at the moment, but it's really difficult and like a
- 38:52dangerous trap to go down or like going sub seven on a 2K
- 38:55row, for example, as a benchmark, what's what would be
- 39:00a more healthy outlook and probably a more effective way of
- 39:04training over time is going, hey, I want to improve on this
- 39:08block. One second improvement is an
- 39:11improvement, 5 seconds improvement is an improvement, a
- 39:14whole minute, but it's like just try and improve over the block.
- 39:17It's probably the best way to look at it rather than having a
- 39:21target pace based off a time that you want to achieve.
- 39:25But I know it's really difficult to not reverse engineer that
- 39:28where you go. I want to run 1850 / 5 K.
- 39:31That's the speed I need to be able to run at.
- 39:33So here's the paces that I'm going to run at and.
- 39:35What's your thoughts on essentially doing, let's say I
- 39:40did a 5K run, but rather than making it horrible for myself
- 39:44and saying I'm going to do a 5K test Max effort, what if I said
- 39:48I'm going to do a 5K test at a particular heart rate cap?
- 39:52So for me, let's say I start to cross into my zone 5 like 165
- 39:59BPM. So I could say I'm going to do a
- 40:015K but I'm not going to allow myself to go above 165.
- 40:03I can sit at 165. If I go just above, I have to
- 40:05come back down. And then I do my block and train
- 40:08against that. What's your thoughts on that
- 40:10versus doing a Max effort as a benchmark and then training?
- 40:13And it depends because if you want to use heart rate data as
- 40:16your metric for the block, which, and this is something we
- 40:20discussed with Roscoe when he came on and we're discussing
- 40:22triathlon training and Iron Man training, because a lot of that
- 40:25training is done in specific heart rate zones.
- 40:29If you want to work heart rate zones, then I think it's
- 40:31obviously you do your metric in. In a heart rate zone.
- 40:34I don't love it as much because it's not a true representation
- 40:38of your actual Max ability. I'd much prefer you to just bury
- 40:43yourself in your test. That way we know we have like a
- 40:46true representation of your best effort on that day.
- 40:50And then we can, I mean, we can still extrapolate heart rate
- 40:53data from that. But for running and work
- 40:57especially, I much prefer basing off pacing.
- 40:59I think that's fair as well because as much as I would love
- 41:01to do the suggestion that I had like you have a shit night's
- 41:04sleep and your heart rate just doesn't respond in the same way.
- 41:08And the the reason I ask is because I know there are certain
- 41:11higher athletes that would do full Sims with a heart rate cap
- 41:15and compare those because they can they then don't sabotage the
- 41:18rest of their training. But if that's to impair the.
- 41:212:00 Well, it just depends on on what that session's designed
- 41:24for. Is it like this is actually our
- 41:25benchmark testing? Because if they were going to do
- 41:27a benchmark test, for sure they're not doing that at a
- 41:29heart rate cap. But it is interesting to see and
- 41:33like heart rate data is so underused and like such as a
- 41:36great tool for training and one of the really fun benchmarks to
- 41:41do in your training as a test to see if you're making like
- 41:44tangible progresses. An hour in zone 2 just running
- 41:49and over time, as you get fitter, you'll be able to run
- 41:52faster at that same heart rate. That's your like your zone 2
- 41:57capacity improving, your aerobic capacity improving.
- 42:00So maybe you start the block and over the hour you run nine and a
- 42:03bit K and your heart rate was still in zone 2.
- 42:06But by the end of 8 to 12 weeks worth of training you can now
- 42:09run just over 10K or 11K but with exactly the same heart
- 42:13rate. But like you say, so many
- 42:14factors influence your heart rate, so you've just got to have
- 42:18your environment the same as much as possible when you test
- 42:21and retest. Yeah, OK.
- 42:23Because yeah, all of that points towards what we said we were
- 42:28doing in the 1st place, which is the Hieroxim to figure out, you
- 42:31know, it's a way to test in that specific situation how your
- 42:35body's going to respond and you can break it down.
- 42:37And that's one of the beauties of Hierox is you, you have the
- 42:40set distances and you can take your splits away.
- 42:44You can work it. And if, if for example, I know
- 42:46one of my weaker things in my races has been lunges, I can do
- 42:49a block not quite in the same way because it's not as aerobic,
- 42:51but I could do a block for lunges and I could check my
- 42:53time. Likewise, I could then have done
- 42:56that, go into the SIM and see, come on, London's have improved.
- 42:59But actually what hasn't improved in my general fitness
- 43:02is my burpees. So we're going to have to do a
- 43:05bit more focus over the next show and weeks before London on
- 43:07the burpees so. Yeah.
- 43:10And that's that's that's how the majority of the training that we
- 43:14through rocks deliver for all of our clients is very specific
- 43:19towards actual blocks. And then there's so many
- 43:22elements that you need to improve.
- 43:23You need to be better. Maybe strength with let's use
- 43:27lunges as an example, you need to improve your unilateral
- 43:29strength, so single leg strength, all sorts of different
- 43:31ways of doing that. But then also you need to be
- 43:33able to improve your efficiency of the movement.
- 43:36You need to be able to improve your ability to handle the
- 43:38lunges under fatigue. Typically when we do that for
- 43:41our clients, give away some secrets, we'll typically do the
- 43:44compromise sessions or I call them interference sessions on
- 43:47the bike. So we're not adding excess
- 43:49loading and volume to like the impact on your joints because
- 43:53you're running so much anyway in the week.
- 43:55And then we will have a test metric, whatever that session
- 44:00happens to be, some burpees or some lunges and then something
- 44:03on the bike X amount of times, X amount of rounds.
- 44:05And then we'll see if you can improve on that time over the
- 44:07course of eight weeks. But if you're struggling in
- 44:10terms of understanding how to put that training together by
- 44:13yourself or an effective training plan, that's when you
- 44:16need to jump on with a coach and and discuss it with someone who
- 44:19has experience doing it. Yeah.
- 44:21OK. Plug rocks.
- 44:22Plug rocks. And, and even if, even if let's
- 44:25let's be sensible as well, like if, if you have a coach or even
- 44:29if you don't, but you're looking at your program ahead of your
- 44:31races or, or how you train ahead of your races, then I guarantee
- 44:35you every coach would love you to be able to do a full SIM in
- 44:37some way without it costing you £120 though to a different
- 44:41country and figure out, figure it all out there.
- 44:44So yeah, look forward to seeing you.
- 44:46Basically, I think the pitch is, the pitch is pretty solid.
- 44:48And we actually, we, we didn't necessarily do the whole
- 44:51benchmarking thing for that, but I think it is a really
- 44:53interesting point. And we're at that point in the
- 44:54season where for hierarchs athletes anyway, it's kind of
- 44:59all kicking off in the UK next month.
- 45:01But generally with other sports as well.
- 45:03Like I've got a lot of friends that do things like rugby and
- 45:06because the winter sports are coming back into play, even
- 45:08though they play rugby and you wouldn't think necessarily they
- 45:11need to do their benchmarking. I know one of them is super keen
- 45:13on doing the aerobic benchmarking with a row.
- 45:15Because he's a forward, he has to not leg drive and he knows
- 45:18that he still has to use his body as well.
- 45:20Well, lots of teams use. I don't know if you've heard of
- 45:21the Bronco, but it's a famous test in rugby where you're
- 45:24running. It's basically shuttles and
- 45:26intervals and most rugby teams, whether it's the Bronco or
- 45:29something else, will have a metric to go.
- 45:32This is where your fitness is now.
- 45:34This is like match level fitness we need you to be at.
- 45:38If you're not at that, you're not going to get selected and
- 45:40then you need to maintain that fitness across the season.
- 45:42Like every single sport has some sort of testing and metric.
- 45:45Yeah, but we we're going to move into.
- 45:49We have to, we have to move on. Charles actually this week, but
- 45:52on his story I need grind my gears.
- 45:58So yeah, do you want to, do you want to kick us off?
- 46:01Now off that story, I did post it up so if you guys want to get
- 46:04involved ever and grind my gears, you can find us on social
- 46:07media and and and send some things in, but I'm going to
- 46:09start with one of my personal ones.
- 46:11OK now I I forgot to say it last week, it was one of the ones I
- 46:16wanted to say last week because it's been on my mind for so
- 46:18long. But people not being able to
- 46:22move the cardio machines in the gym now you laugh.
- 46:27You laugh this tirelessly just destroys my soul every day I'm
- 46:34in the gym. Like I see someone move the CTC
- 46:382 bike by the seat. Now when you pull the seat up,
- 46:42there's no resistance on it. So you know OK guys we need to
- 46:45grab out machine any machine. They go for the C2 bike, they
- 46:49approach from behind and they pull the seat straight up and
- 46:53you that fucking jarring noise of it, like ticking all the way
- 46:56up and they pull the seat out and I'm like, but they never
- 47:00learn pull from the front man. It's got wheels on the front
- 47:03kickstand in the front of me. It's just I I could go on for.
- 47:07I'm trying to stay. Oh geez, that have known Charles
- 47:10for a while, We'll know that he used to have a real on his
- 47:12Instagram about how to move in a fan bike.
- 47:15Be careful, because I can't. Yeah, it was in the Soul bike.
- 47:18It was in the Soul bike, so yeah, you basically go round to
- 47:21the front, you put your foot on the front, you tip it up until
- 47:23it's on the wheels and then you can push it.
- 47:24It's really easy to. Drive from the handles, yeah,
- 47:27which got reposted. Actually, it got shared again by
- 47:30Assault Fitness, did it to clarify that that is the correct
- 47:35way to move it. And Even so, I was getting
- 47:37trolled in the comments being like, that's that's going to
- 47:39break the handles. But even though Assault Fitness
- 47:42have gone, yeah, this guy is clearly, he clearly knows what
- 47:44he's doing. Move it from the Yeah.
- 47:46So Echo bikes as well as Salt bikes, people don't understand
- 47:49how to move them. People.
- 47:50Put the rowers away with the screen still up people.
- 47:53That one though, that one though, for me, I I get that you
- 47:56can push the screens down, Yeah. And then the like.
- 47:59It doesn't seem to make any difference.
- 48:02So it depends if you're storing them against the wall, because
- 48:04if you roll them up against the wall and the screens out, you
- 48:07just get smashed into the wall. And then also one which is less
- 48:11of a bug bearer, but people when you store the rows up, leave the
- 48:15handles still in the cradle. That's quite normal.
- 48:20Yeah, for sure. And I understand that.
- 48:22But it's over time if you keep the tension on the on the chain,
- 48:26you lose some tension. So it's it would just need to be
- 48:28serviced more frequently. So you just need to unhook that.
- 48:31That's a less of a bug, but just the biggest.
- 48:33It's less of a grinder. It's more of like just an ick.
- 48:36If I went to the gym and I saw someone and they couldn't move
- 48:39the machines, I'm like, you're done, Red flag.
- 48:41We're not many partners anymore. I'll see you later.
- 48:43Yeah, we're not anything anymore.
- 48:45You are. You are not in my life anymore.
- 48:47You're so done. I'll come in with one of mine
- 48:49this week so I actually as as some people will recall if
- 48:55they've got a good memory from the Roscoe episode.
- 48:57I was filming Roscoe do his Iron Man this week.
- 49:00Shout out to shout out Monday podcast.
- 49:02Absolutely smashed it. Quite a few of their boys were
- 49:06doing the 70.3 on the Sunday as well which I wasn't there for.
- 49:09But in the Iron Man, the three of them, Jay finished first of
- 49:14the three of them. I think he finished in like 10
- 49:16hours, 37. Joel, that's awesome.
- 49:19Joel finished 1054, so also when?
- 49:22Sub 11 Sub. 11 And then Roscoe came over in 1118.
- 49:26Which is also amazing. Also like such a solid time.
- 49:29I think one of the things that was really impressive though was
- 49:32as much as Jay and Joel might have gone faster than Roscoe,
- 49:34Roscoe is the only one that ran a sub 4 hour marathon really off
- 49:37the bike. Oh sweet.
- 49:38Another thing that I will give them all credit for is I think
- 49:41if they had done it at most other Iron Man's they would have
- 49:44gone significantly quicker because the way that the course
- 49:47was set up, the transition zone was mental.
- 49:51I did see some some footage, so it's David.
- 49:55Ganser right, competitors. And the way that the transition
- 49:59had been set up was give or take, you get like between half
- 50:03a meter and a meter per bike hanging up.
- 50:05So bear in mind you have all the bikes, then you've got the bags
- 50:08and then you've got actually getting out of the water. 3000
- 50:11bikes, three lanes. That means 1000 bio.
- 50:13OK, fine. Along this straight road and if
- 50:17you if you say yeah let's call it 700 meters of just bikes 700
- 50:22meters of just bikes and then you've got 100 ish 150 meters of
- 50:25just bags and then you have to get out of the water and run the
- 50:28length of the beach that's another hundred 200 meters they
- 50:31each time they had to do transition they were running
- 50:34more than 1K big rocks and I can I can yeah big rocks head I can
- 50:38vouch for that because I'm unfortunately.
- 50:40You're filming, I'm. Filming, so I had to follow one
- 50:43of them through run back, follow the next one through, run back,
- 50:45follow the next one through. But no, they all did really
- 50:48well. Lovely, lovely day for it.
- 50:50It was actually quite hot. So I don't know if it actually
- 50:54helped or not. He was quite well prepared
- 50:55Roscoe for his race. But when he came off the bike he
- 50:58was covered in salt on his shorts and I was like, you need
- 51:00more salt tabs. So yeah, he went out on the run
- 51:03but smashed the four hour, the four hour marathon and went
- 51:07under that. And yeah, they all did really
- 51:09well, but. Yeah, what's your grind my
- 51:11gears? Grind my gears.
- 51:13Just shout out Roscoe. For those of you that also
- 51:16remember that I somewhat fucked up Roscoe's filming at the T100
- 51:19with the finish line in that I wasn't there and which sucked, I
- 51:25made sure that I was there for this one.
- 51:27Obviously very important. Arguably far more important than
- 51:30I man, and always going swimmingly well.
- 51:34Unfortunately though, there was a bloke in front of Roscoe who
- 51:38crossed the line and decided to just hog the entirety of the
- 51:41camera space. And I've actually started to
- 51:44realise that I've seen this happen quite a few times.
- 51:46People cross the line and the main character energy is so high
- 51:50that they just do anything. And as an example of this was
- 51:53going on when Roscoe wasn't finishing as well.
- 51:55And I did still get the shot of Roscoe, but this guy is in it
- 51:57being a bit annoying. There was another bloke who
- 52:01crossed the line ahead of about five other people crossing the
- 52:03line, stood on the finish line which kind of blocked the finish
- 52:08line from anyone else finishing. Took his shoe off, put his shoe
- 52:12up to his head like it was a phone and pretended to call
- 52:15someone, right? And then that was it, like.
- 52:18No, that's hard. I don't know if he was supposed
- 52:20to like put the phone down because he'd like broken his
- 52:22target or something. But tell me he ran a really slow
- 52:25time. I didn't even see his time
- 52:27because the other five had followed through so at that
- 52:29time. But then what it was he was
- 52:31there for so long and it was so awkward that the the guys that
- 52:34you know, every single person gets announced as so and so's
- 52:37name. You are an IMAT.
- 52:38They were running through these five people, and he'd been there
- 52:41so long that they were like, nobody's calling, get out of the
- 52:44finish line. And I was like, you're such a
- 52:47mug. Yeah.
- 52:48Frustrating one another. Another interesting thing about
- 52:50that whole situation. There's like 20 people that give
- 52:52out medals. There's not that many people
- 52:54finishing it. No.
- 52:55Yeah, yeah. So I was thinking like, wow,
- 52:57they've slightly overstaffed for this.
- 52:59But what goes on is, I didn't realize you get given your medal
- 53:03and you're chaperoned out of the finish area.
- 53:05Oh, really? So the person that gives you a
- 53:06medal takes it, removes you. Oh, wow.
- 53:08And so that's why they need so many years.
- 53:09There's just these constant cycle of moving people out.
- 53:12And it's partly because a lot of people will then collapse on the
- 53:14floor and not start fuelling straight away.
- 53:16And so they get taken into it. Oh no, I would be if, if, I
- 53:19would be so upset if I'd got the whole way to the end of my Iron
- 53:23Man and crossed. Line and I didn't get like a
- 53:25photo of me finishing the line because so many people missed it
- 53:27standing there with their alpha flow on their own yeah literally
- 53:30there's so many people who have missed that I mean it was kind
- 53:32of quite sad yeah it was I now need like a post race
- 53:35celebration. Well, this is here you go I've
- 53:36got as good as that so good. This one's it.
- 53:38I'm going to do both shoes at the same time.
- 53:40I'll be I'll be there with the camera.
- 53:41I'm just not going to take a single photo of you.
- 53:42That's perfect. If no one else gets 1, you force
- 53:45me to buy the the official photos.
- 53:47That's perfect. That's perfect.
- 53:49So yeah, that, that's my main. One.
- 53:52Yeah, that's a good one. Should we keep going again?
- 53:54Yeah, yeah, yeah. This one's been sent in and I'm
- 53:56going to keep them anonymous, OK?
- 53:58Saying on the theme of of machines and ergs, people who
- 54:02jump on the ski erg. This isn't your type, this is a
- 54:08technique thing I. Don't need to say anything more
- 54:10than that, just jumping on the skier gear that grinds my gears.
- 54:14I think that's more of again, an ick than AI.
- 54:16Think they're the same thing aren't they really?
- 54:17An ick and a grinding my gear. I, I I had someone write in this
- 54:21week. This is London specific so
- 54:24people that go to work with wheelie bags as their like work
- 54:28bag which you said you'd not seen.
- 54:30For I've not seen that. I I used to assume that was
- 54:34people like. Going on holiday?
- 54:36Not a nicer on holiday, but maybe on a work trip because I
- 54:38still work, dress smartly. Yeah.
- 54:40Then when I was working in this office in London, I did notice
- 54:43that some people would have these bags in work and it would
- 54:45be everyday and I'd be like OK, you're not travelling from
- 54:48somewhere, you are actually using this as a.
- 54:50Work. But is this because they can't
- 54:51be bothered to carry a backpack or like curse?
- 54:55Yes, quite. Literally.
- 54:56And wow, that's just severely lazy.
- 54:58Yeah. And not be able to put something
- 55:00on your back. So yeah, No, I know.
- 55:03Yeah. I.
- 55:03Mean I haven't seen that, but no, I agree with that.
- 55:06I don't like laziness. The other line thing that this
- 55:09this one's this one can be I don't know if I should say this.
- 55:14I don't like I don't like it when people don't tuck their
- 55:17shirts in when they're playing golf.
- 55:20Oh. Oh wait, did sorry, did you say
- 55:23this one was sent in? No, it wasn't me.
- 55:25I have shirts which like. No, don't tuck.
- 55:29No, it's golf course etiquette. Literally they don't tuck.
- 55:32Not long enough to tuck. Yeah, a longer one.
- 55:34Yeah, fine. Pull.
- 55:35Your trousers are high. Yeah, Simon Cowell.
- 55:38Yeah, for sure. Nice.
- 55:39We don't need to spend much longer on that one.
- 55:41And I've I've got loads, but you go I was.
- 55:43Going to say, I've got one this week, which was from a girl
- 55:47called Millie who is absolutely sick to death of the influencer
- 55:52trend, which is unfortunately I do love because all of the
- 55:56things they love are the most generic things that everybody,
- 55:59well, not everybody, but the same type of people always love.
- 56:02So it's like I unfortunately, I do love having three matches a
- 56:05day. Unfortunately, I do love a 9:00
- 56:07PM bedroom. That's not the one.
- 56:09Stop using this trend, which is supposed to show things that you
- 56:12shouldn't be doing as like. But unfortunately I'm super
- 56:15healthy. I'm amazing like.
- 56:18It's like you, you know when you go for a job interview and
- 56:20they're like, what's your biggest weakness?
- 56:22And you go like, Oh, my biggest weaknesses that I work too hard
- 56:26or I'm too popular. Although do you know what?
- 56:28Fuck off with that question. Yeah, I'm not exposing myself,
- 56:31no. Yeah, yeah, I'm going to lie
- 56:33either way. I, I genuinely think I've said
- 56:36my, my best compromise for not giving a really cringe answer to
- 56:39that, but still like giving a cringe answer to that is I'm not
- 56:42very good at recognizing when I should ask for help.
- 56:45Basically saying if you don't help me out, I could fuck
- 56:48everything out. But I'm actually just really
- 56:51good, so I really help much. You should go back with that.
- 56:55Let me ask you the same question.
- 56:56What would you? Say yours is.
- 56:57I need some inspiration. This one again not really
- 57:01fitness related, but adults who ride push scooters.
- 57:04You know, like a microlight scooter.
- 57:07No scooters. Like when you like you have some
- 57:09not like the electric one. It's quite.
- 57:10Funny when I I used to watch the gadget show when I was younger
- 57:12on Channel 5 and they used to do like grits just top scooters and
- 57:16I used to be like oh that's so sick why don't people in London
- 57:18do that now as a person in. London I completely No self
- 57:22respecting adults should ride a scooter.
- 57:24No self respecting. Electric scooters are OK.
- 57:26Still like them as well. But yeah, this, I mean, this is
- 57:29this one's even worse. But like, actually, no, I, I, I
- 57:34can't do that one. I'm going to go straight into.
- 57:36That one, I saw this one yesterday.
- 57:40This is outrageous. I can't believe this hasn't come
- 57:42up before. Footwear.
- 57:44Footwear is important, OK? I've seen by the training and
- 57:47all sorts of footwear. I've actually seen people
- 57:49training barefoot in a gym and I would argue the one I'm about to
- 57:51bring up is worse than training barefoot.
- 57:53No, it's worse. The shoes which have the toes
- 57:57and like, you immediately know what I'm talking about.
- 57:59I don't know if they're supposed to be climbing shoes or
- 58:01something. I think they're called like
- 58:03naked. Like barefoot shoes, which we've
- 58:05spoken about before. But have we?
- 58:08That was that's been one of my grammar gears.
- 58:09But but the worst thing is if you're going to wear them, don't
- 58:13get them in luminous green. I cannot believe I saw luminous
- 58:18green toe hugging shoes. They're the worst.
- 58:21Yeah, don't If you turn up to the actually that's a
- 58:25requirement. I might slip down the terms and
- 58:27conditions. If you turn up to the SIM in
- 58:28those go I'm not allowed. No, deemed not safe.
- 58:31No refunding exactly deemed not safe.
- 58:34I love that I've actually had. I had a separate message and
- 58:38then I had someone message in on my questions box the same thing
- 58:43but this one. I'll keep them anonymous as
- 58:45well. Everyone thinking they can run a
- 58:47sub three hour marathon then failing and making up an excuse
- 58:51which which I feel is is pretty relevant now off the back of
- 58:55Berlin marathon. And then someone else messaged
- 58:57in saying influencers making sub three hour marathon their
- 59:01personality and then failing. But he was saying it is like, it
- 59:05actually makes me feel quite happy when they do that because
- 59:07they've literally made it their personality and then they've
- 59:09failed. Don't, don't, don't get me
- 59:11wrong, I love seeing a successor.
- 59:13I love seeing someone break sub three.
- 59:14But like Harry Styles, Harry style guy.
- 59:18Yeah, that was something we need to talk.
- 59:19About black long sleeve shirt in 25° heat as well.
- 59:22So hard. The guy's the.
- 59:23Go. You know you're quick if you're
- 59:25doing that. Guy's the goat.
- 59:27But then, well, one thing. Isn't Berlin the fastest major?
- 59:31Yeah, so. It is a good course, but it was
- 59:34really hot. So like, that's why I'm a little
- 59:36bit more sympathetic from this weekend if you didn't hit your
- 59:40target because it was just crazy hot, like freak hot, but.
- 59:44Well, I I was also going to say one of my favorite in a
- 59:46narcissistic way. One of my favorite things is
- 59:48when I see a reel that is episode 1 of the sub three hour
- 59:52marathon journey because I'm like this thing is going to go
- 59:54on for so long. God, years and years.
- 59:59Yeah. What else can I say?
- 1:00:03Yeah, I'm, I think. I think that's probably it from
- 1:00:07from the ones I've got from the the writing in.
- 1:00:09I've got another personal one but it's a bit long winded so
- 1:00:13maybe we save that one for for next week.
- 1:00:15OK, OK, I, I definitely, I've gone through that thing again
- 1:00:18where there's been a bunch of things that have annoyed me and
- 1:00:20I've not written them down because.
- 1:00:21I've now you can't remember. I can't remember, yeah.
- 1:00:23So if you are that person then make sure you are writing them
- 1:00:26down and send them in to us when you.
- 1:00:28Just as soon as you see as soon. As you just use us as your
- 1:00:30notepad. Yeah, message them.
- 1:00:31Yeah, message. Them because yeah, we we love
- 1:00:34bringing them up. I love discussing them.
- 1:00:37I think that is one of the best parts of our podcast to be
- 1:00:40honest. So yeah, please do keep
- 1:00:42interacted. Now this week I have terrible
- 1:00:44news. Terrible news.
- 1:00:47The food section that we were enjoying bringing in has not
- 1:00:49been sustained for this week, nor has the appearance of pod
- 1:00:54dog. In fact, he's been quite naughty
- 1:00:55this morning. I won't go into that, but he's
- 1:00:58he's currently locked out. So without those two missing
- 1:01:01parts, we're going to have to scoot on.
- 1:01:04Dive straight in we're. Going to dive straight into the
- 1:01:06rocks game which this week I have brought along.
- 1:01:09Now if you're watching this you might have a slightly better
- 1:01:13experience because you get to see what we're thinking of
- 1:01:16before we come up with them. So you get to laugh at us being
- 1:01:19stupid. If you don't, you can play along
- 1:01:21literally with us. So you are going to be as clued
- 1:01:24up as we are. Now the aim of the game is to
- 1:01:28think of what the other person is thinking.
- 1:01:29So the way this works is there is a category.
- 1:01:34The first category, so you can understand with a bit of
- 1:01:37context, is something found in a commercial gym.
- 1:01:42And when I say commercial gym, I'm talking like a pure gym, the
- 1:01:45gym, all of those similar. So what we've then both done is
- 1:01:49we've written three things down and you're going to ask yes or
- 1:01:53no questions. This could.
- 1:01:55Be a nightmare. Yeah, this could go so, so badly
- 1:01:58for us, but you're you're basically trying to guess the
- 1:02:01other person's three things before they get yours and we
- 1:02:04take it in turns. So we'll basically just get into
- 1:02:06it. If you still can't understand
- 1:02:07from what I've said, you're going to figure out very
- 1:02:09quickly. If you can figure out what are
- 1:02:11on the list, you can figure out what are things are before we
- 1:02:15do, then let us know in the comments.
- 1:02:17But also if you would have had better niche ideas, put them in
- 1:02:20the comments as well. So yeah, round one, you can ask
- 1:02:23me a question, yes or no. First things found in a
- 1:02:26commercial gym. Is it a piece of equipment?
- 1:02:32No, wait, do we have to go and order or it's just like I can
- 1:02:35just ask questions that couldn't check off any three.
- 1:02:39OK, Yeah, yeah, so, so is there a piece of equipment there?
- 1:02:42Oh, wow. OK, cool.
- 1:02:44That's throwing me already. Is there a piece of equipment in
- 1:02:47your list? Yeah, OK.
- 1:02:50Is it a person, Yes. Or like a type of person?
- 1:02:55Yes, OK. Is it a cable machine?
- 1:03:02It's not no. Sorry, is there a cable machine?
- 1:03:08Is there like a piece of clothing?
- 1:03:11No. OK.
- 1:03:13Is this for upper body can be? Oh OK, OK.
- 1:03:19Can be OK I'm diving in and make a guess.
- 1:03:22Is it a bodybuilder? No.
- 1:03:24Oh. We're going to be here for a
- 1:03:27long. Long yeah, we've we're only
- 1:03:28doing 3 rounds of this. It could take a whole hour.
- 1:03:31OK, so it's it could be used for either?
- 1:03:35Is this squat rack? No.
- 1:03:41Is it someone who's training for high rocks and takes up loads of
- 1:03:45equipment and all the space? No, no, not on that niche.
- 1:03:49Is it a free weight? No.
- 1:03:51OK. Thank God there's there's too
- 1:03:54many things to even consider guessing so.
- 1:03:56I might go down another path for a bit.
- 1:03:58There's it's a, there's a type of person who I might expect to
- 1:04:01find. And are they all people or just
- 1:04:08one of one of your is one of yours?
- 1:04:10Oh no. No, it's just one of them.
- 1:04:11Oh, that can be my question, OK. Have you got is all of your
- 1:04:16stuff equipment? I'm going to say no, OK, but it
- 1:04:21could be also yes. OK, great.
- 1:04:24It's just that's going to make sense when I eventually get it
- 1:04:27might not OK. Is it a type of?
- 1:04:33Is that food? No.
- 1:04:35No. Can I hold something on your
- 1:04:38list in one hand? Yeah, OK.
- 1:04:45Is one of them like that it's an object or it's like a type of
- 1:04:52behaviour or something? Or is that all objects?
- 1:04:56They're not all objects. There is, there is.
- 1:05:00I would say one kind of two objects in this.
- 1:05:04I need to think about the gym as a whole.
- 1:05:10So that's like a culture thing, a gym culture thing.
- 1:05:13What's? It in a gym?
- 1:05:14You walk in a gym? What did you see?
- 1:05:22Jim Leggings. No.
- 1:05:24You said there were no clothes. Yes.
- 1:05:27I said no clothes. That's the first thing is.
- 1:05:30One of your things, a resistance band it is, yeah.
- 1:05:32Yes. How have you got that?
- 1:05:34That's I gave you too. Much I gave you, you didn't.
- 1:05:36I actually had them. I had two rounds in it.
- 1:05:38I gave you too much. All right, So you've got one.
- 1:05:40I've got one. I'm really struggling here.
- 1:05:43Changing room. Give me it that response.
- 1:05:47Give me a. OK, I'm going to give you
- 1:05:50disabled toilet. Well, how?
- 1:05:54That's too niche. OK, disabled toilet.
- 1:05:56I thought you'd be like toilet. And then I could be like, yeah.
- 1:06:00OK, I'm taking. I'm taking Jen.
- 1:06:04Have you got anything that on your list that could kill you if
- 1:06:08he's wrong? I don't think so.
- 1:06:14OK. I don't think so.
- 1:06:15OK. But, you know, stranger things
- 1:06:18have happened. Yeah, You might disagree with
- 1:06:20me. When you find out what it is,
- 1:06:22I'm going to say personal trainer.
- 1:06:24Yeah. Is it?
- 1:06:25Yeah, you've got. You wrote like creepy personal
- 1:06:27trainer or something. Didn't.
- 1:06:27You I nearly did that, but then I thought that would go down
- 1:06:30poorly, so I wrote personal trainer slash cleaner.
- 1:06:32OK, because that's what they do. And they they, they pay rent by
- 1:06:36cleaning. So it's who won, who won the
- 1:06:39boys. Who'd have thought it?
- 1:06:42OK, I'm so clear to be your 1A bench.
- 1:06:49No, so I was, that's what I was, I was going to say like a sofa.
- 1:06:52Or a chair? OK.
- 1:06:54No, no. Is that close?
- 1:06:56No, all right. I would say every single
- 1:07:01commercial gym I have been to has this and it's one of the
- 1:07:05first. Ones you see, I've got it, I've
- 1:07:07got it, I've got it. This for sure is it.
- 1:07:10I am going to say, have you got like lifting straps on there?
- 1:07:18I might have to give you that. OK, I put lifting gloves.
- 1:07:21Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You got to give.
- 1:07:23Lifting straps far more acceptable than lifting gloves.
- 1:07:26OK, Yeah, Yeah, you can have that.
- 1:07:28You gave me the Sable toilet. Yeah.
- 1:07:31Water fountain. No bar.
- 1:07:34OK, I've got it. OK, I've got it.
- 1:07:37OK, OK, shit. I've kind of got my mobile.
- 1:07:42I have no idea. Yourself.
- 1:07:42You're going to kick yourself. The listeners have got it.
- 1:07:49They already know. A speaker.
- 1:07:53No vending machine. No.
- 1:07:57Charles come. On this is what I mean, I think,
- 1:07:59I think this is actually going to be like the biggest kick
- 1:08:02yourself thing that you could think of every every single one
- 1:08:06of these. This is something like super
- 1:08:07niche which is like dumb and like.
- 1:08:09Oh, well, you've got no, you've got no.
- 1:08:11Oh it's not super niche at all. I I for sure had it with vending
- 1:08:16machine. What you did?
- 1:08:17And Ward's found them. You've changed.
- 1:08:19It I haven't. OK, so wait.
- 1:08:24So wait, wait, wait, wait. Is this heavier than one
- 1:08:29kilogram? Yes.
- 1:08:30OK. Is your final 1A door.
- 1:08:34No. Is yours a weight plate?
- 1:08:37No. We're just going Hail Mary now.
- 1:08:40There we are. OK, so you don't use it to
- 1:08:42exercise, but you you're active with this object.
- 1:08:48Yeah, like you can't really. You can't really not use it.
- 1:08:54It's just there. As soon as you notice it, you've
- 1:08:57used it. That's way too much.
- 1:09:00I've given you it. I have once you know what it is
- 1:09:05that. Is all of yours toilet themed?
- 1:09:07No, but, but yeah, OK. You could go to the toilet in
- 1:09:12it. No, on it.
- 1:09:14You could you. There's probably one in the
- 1:09:16toilet. Last guess.
- 1:09:22Last guesses. You're going to kick yourself as
- 1:09:24well because it's so specific to the podcast.
- 1:09:29It's. So specific to the podcast,
- 1:09:30that's that's so annoying. Is that a Bosu ball?
- 1:09:33Yeah. OK, so I win.
- 1:09:34That's great. I win that round.
- 1:09:36That doesn't count. What do you mean I?
- 1:09:38Gave you that. I've literally given you yours.
- 1:09:41You get one more guess you you'll literally you're going to
- 1:09:44kick yourself more than me. No, it's something dumb like a
- 1:09:47doormat. No, it's not cool.
- 1:09:50Is it a mirror? Shut up, I don't train in gyms
- 1:09:54and mirrors. I said it's a commercial.
- 1:09:56Gym I know, but I don't every. Single commercial gym has a
- 1:09:59mirror I. Don't.
- 1:10:00Go all of the listeners have got that straight.
- 1:10:01Away. Yeah, obviously, because they're
- 1:10:03watching on YouTube and it's written in front of them.
- 1:10:07OK. So we're going to move on to
- 1:10:09more, more of our style. OK, We're going to do another
- 1:10:11round. It's going to be more of our
- 1:10:12style. If this is the first round
- 1:10:15you're hearing, we got rid of the first round.
- 1:10:20So scam fitness products. Oh, here we go.
- 1:10:23OK, you you ask away first. It's creatine.
- 1:10:26Gummies no scam talking about? No, I haven't put that.
- 1:10:31Have you got creatine gummies down?
- 1:10:32Obviously. Yeah.
- 1:10:33OK, great. So one elf.
- 1:10:36Is it you wear it? It's wearable.
- 1:10:41I have. I think of things that you wear.
- 1:10:43OK, cool. Have you got anything you wear?
- 1:10:50Yes. OK.
- 1:10:51Is this, I can't remember what it's called but is it the one
- 1:10:54where you it's like the cooling headband?
- 1:10:56No gutted I thought those are two shoe insurance for me.
- 1:11:03OK. Would I wear this on my upper
- 1:11:05body? Would I wear the one of the
- 1:11:07things on anything on your on my upper body?
- 1:11:09Yeah. OK.
- 1:11:11God, it's niche. I have told you about it though
- 1:11:13before, so that's my only saving grace.
- 1:11:15But it's super niche. It used to be like a no, I can't
- 1:11:18say that. Is any of yours edible?
- 1:11:27Can I say consumable? Is that fair?
- 1:11:30Yeah. Like you are drink supposed to.
- 1:11:32Yeah, Yeah, you could drink it maybe.
- 1:11:35You're supposed to. Yeah, like you're supposed to
- 1:11:37consume it. That's its purpose, all right.
- 1:11:41What was that For me, I just. Didn't want to say you could eat
- 1:11:44for. Riddled me.
- 1:11:45For what it is OK so. It's a fluid.
- 1:11:49Yeah. OK, Oh, I've got it.
- 1:11:52Does does? Got it.
- 1:11:53Does does the this particular wearable thing go on your wrist?
- 1:11:57Yes. OK.
- 1:11:59Is it like athletic greens? Yeah.
- 1:12:01Is it? This week's sponsor is, I'm
- 1:12:03joking, absolutely not going to happen.
- 1:12:05AG one athletic greens. I got it.
- 1:12:07Yeah, that works. I, I I, I have been sent to
- 1:12:10someone. I stand by the fact that forcing
- 1:12:13green shit down you in the morning that doesn't taste very
- 1:12:15nice is not good for you. It's like doing a 2K test.
- 1:12:17Mentally not good for you. You do it once and you realize
- 1:12:19how bad it is and you never want to do it.
- 1:12:20Yeah. OK, so I'm going to guess then.
- 1:12:25Actually, one more question before I guess.
- 1:12:28Did this come out recently? No.
- 1:12:30OK, I think I know what it is. Oh God.
- 1:12:32OK, so I've got 1. I've got one as well, right?
- 1:12:38Yeah, yeah. You got creatine gummies.
- 1:12:40Yeah, which I just gave you. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:41Thanks. That was the dumbest thing.
- 1:12:45Is your you've got any others there that are consumable?
- 1:12:50No. OK.
- 1:12:51Have you got like one of those bands that helps you balance
- 1:12:56better? OK, sit the.
- 1:12:57Power balance wristband. Yeah, You know the thing I'm
- 1:13:00talking. About the thing you're.
- 1:13:01Talking about the rave when you're like 13.
- 1:13:03Pissed off at my mum because she wouldn't buy you one.
- 1:13:05She wouldn't let me buy one off the website I got on from eBay
- 1:13:07and it didn't work because it was.
- 1:13:08Fake but such a good story because that is exactly what
- 1:13:11happened with me as well. Like, ridiculous that that's
- 1:13:14exactly the same thing that happened to me with a little
- 1:13:17hologram in it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:19This is a fake hologram. I've watched the YouTube video.
- 1:13:21Mum, this is fake. I can't believe we spent £15 on
- 1:13:23this. Should just spent £30 on the
- 1:13:25real. One on the real one, yeah,
- 1:13:26that's why I've never made it as a.
- 1:13:27YouTube video. Like he's got perfect balance
- 1:13:29when he wears this. It's definitely nothing to do
- 1:13:30with the fact that his friend is pulling his arm downwards, not
- 1:13:32outweighs. I was just like, that is for
- 1:13:34sure why I never made it. Yeah, because I got the fake.
- 1:13:37All the England cricket players were in them.
- 1:13:38I was like, I would literally be in England cricket.
- 1:13:40Players and there was the other one which was like like 2
- 1:13:43material loops. With them as bollocks.
- 1:13:46That was obviously bollocks. I wasn't.
- 1:13:47Didn't look cool. Yeah, that wasn't there.
- 1:13:48Already. What colours did you have?
- 1:13:50Blue really. I think yellow.
- 1:13:52Do you go like the luminescent green yellow?
- 1:13:53No, just like the yellow, Yellow.
- 1:13:55Oh, it's dead. Red and blue is.
- 1:13:57The all the like the NBA players wearing them as well.
- 1:14:00I think some of them still in talks.
- 1:14:01So how it happens? They exploded overnight and then
- 1:14:04dissolved so fast that you you still to buy them on EasyJet.
- 1:14:07I'm going to buy one. I'm going to buy one.
- 1:14:08What are you wearing then? That's.
- 1:14:10Silly sick. He's sick.
- 1:14:11Are you going to get on? Yeah.
- 1:14:12I'm so doing that. We bring it back.
- 1:14:14That's so funny. I've lost all train of thought.
- 1:14:17They're not not. I had AI had a question as well.
- 1:14:20I had a good question. So they're not consumable now.
- 1:14:24Oh is it? Is it nylon plated shoes?
- 1:14:28No, but I will give you a clue. One of these things, actually,
- 1:14:33both of these things we've spoke about on the podcast.
- 1:14:34OK, that would have been clutch. My one is niche now.
- 1:14:39OK. Niche is is this.
- 1:14:41So this is like a true scam, true scam, true scam, fire
- 1:14:45festival level scam. Crazy.
- 1:14:49In my opinion, I might have to forfeit.
- 1:14:53I feel the time. Pressure as well.
- 1:14:55Yeah, same. Sorry guys.
- 1:14:57But we're going to continue. I'm going to we'll do one more
- 1:15:00guest then, OK? OK, so I've got 2 right now.
- 1:15:02Yeah, so I can clean up. OK.
- 1:15:05This is obviously the biggest scam ever and it is a
- 1:15:17subscription service or something.
- 1:15:21Shit. No, no.
- 1:15:23What is it? A Zen pick.
- 1:15:24Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, OK. I would never have got.
- 1:15:27That no, but that's a good that's that's like an actual
- 1:15:30fitness. Sam, do you want to have one
- 1:15:31more guess to get either of these?
- 1:15:32Can I have a question and a guess?
- 1:15:34Yeah. So you wear it around your
- 1:15:35wrist? One of them, yeah.
- 1:15:37Is it also the power balance bag?
- 1:15:39Is it? I had that down, Yeah, literally
- 1:15:42wrote a power balance bag. That's so good we have to wear.
- 1:15:45That as a result then do you want to have one more guess?
- 1:15:48Because then you could win now. I have no idea.
- 1:15:52This one appeared on The Gimmicks.
- 1:15:57I there's only like 3 or 4 that I can remember and we've already
- 1:16:00said like Shake Weight. Did I mention it as a gimmick?
- 1:16:05Oh no, gimmicky, gimmicky. No, I can't remember anything.
- 1:16:11My brains gone dead. Nose tape, you bought that?
- 1:16:16I think that was the first one you mentioned as well.
- 1:16:17I thought that was a that was pretty much.
- 1:16:19It's a tough day to be Charles Last.
- 1:16:21Round We'll give this 10 guesses each.
- 1:16:24If you don't get one within no, we'll say if you go.
- 1:16:28If you go 4 guesses without, you've lost.
- 1:16:30Are we doing the sports person one?
- 1:16:32Yes, we're going to be famous athletes.
- 1:16:34OK, I'll ask first. Is yours famous in the UK?
- 1:16:44Do you want me to? I'll say yes, and I'm going to
- 1:16:46give you another clue just for the sake of everyone listening.
- 1:16:50It's world championship athletics themed.
- 1:16:53OK. So yes, one of them is famous in
- 1:16:55the UK, but they're all global superstars, so if you don't get
- 1:17:00all three, it's kind of embarrassing.
- 1:17:03I'm just going to go straight in with a name, drop famous sports
- 1:17:08people. I'm going to go for Tiger Woods.
- 1:17:11Perfect, good start. I wanted a little bit more
- 1:17:15clarification before I start throwing the Hail Marys in.
- 1:17:18Is this person still competing? All of them.
- 1:17:21All of them are OK. I'm just hail marrying now.
- 1:17:24Yeah. I've give an eye for it.
- 1:17:26Lewis Hamilton? No.
- 1:17:32Josh Kerr. No good choice though.
- 1:17:34That's not Josh Kerr, right? I need to be a bit more clinical
- 1:17:40then. Do we speak about them
- 1:17:43frequently on the podcast? Are they in our car examples
- 1:17:47bubble? Not that often actually.
- 1:17:50Oh great. They they should be.
- 1:17:52Oh, really? They're not.
- 1:17:53Not that often. OK, I'm going.
- 1:17:56On 10 guesses to literally guess, it could be anyone in the
- 1:17:58world who does sport. Actually, OK, I had someone.
- 1:18:04Oh yeah. Alex Yee.
- 1:18:06No. Damn, already scraping the
- 1:18:08barrel. I've mentioned one of them
- 1:18:11already. I've mentioned two of them
- 1:18:13already in this podcast. Have you here?
- 1:18:16Fuck. Yeah.
- 1:18:18OK. I just doesn't listen.
- 1:18:20Yeah, yeah. Are they?
- 1:18:26Do they? All no, no, no.
- 1:18:28Do they currently compete? No, one of them does.
- 1:18:32One of them. OK, yeah.
- 1:18:34Kia Washington, She's one of them, yes.
- 1:18:40Do they play team sports? Two of them, D2 of them.
- 1:18:45Cool. That's kind of how many guesses
- 1:18:48I've had, but I think I've had five.
- 1:18:49I think it was five, Yeah. So four more guesses.
- 1:18:56OK, have you got this isn't really yes or no, but like have
- 1:19:01you got two of the same birth sex gender or like this is a
- 1:19:12horrible way to ask this question in this day and age.
- 1:19:14Have you got have you got a man and a woman?
- 1:19:17Have you got two women? Have you got two men?
- 1:19:20I've got two men left, two men left.
- 1:19:23So the team sport is one of the team sports.
- 1:19:27Football, yes, OK. OK.
- 1:19:35I don't know how you phrase that, but.
- 1:19:37All of you is famous in this country.
- 1:19:38Sorry, I did ask that, but are they, is that like are they
- 1:19:43British and famous or are they famous in this country?
- 1:19:45Are they British and famous? Sorry, no, neither of them are
- 1:19:48British. Oh, OK.
- 1:19:49But they're both like very, very famous.
- 1:19:50Question. It's a bit different to us
- 1:19:51earlier, is it Cristiano Ronaldo?
- 1:19:53No American, either of them. Neither of them American.
- 1:19:59Oh, you said they were retired. That was a dumb guess.
- 1:20:03Messy. No.
- 1:20:04Is he retired? No.
- 1:20:05Perfect. That wasn't even dull.
- 1:20:06Yes, clarified it, failed it. My knowledge on football is
- 1:20:12unrivalled. OK is one of them.
- 1:20:17The person's name I won't be able to pronounce but ran the
- 1:20:19336100K. Sabusio.
- 1:20:22Sabusio No, no. Oh, you haven't mentioned it in
- 1:20:24this. Book No Damn Dumb guess Dumb
- 1:20:27guess can Can one of my questions be what is the team
- 1:20:30sport of the other person? Yes.
- 1:20:33What is the team sport? So you've got.
- 1:20:35I've already got football, yeah. The other one is basketball.
- 1:20:40Cool, OK, I've got like 2 guesses left for every single
- 1:20:45NBA player that I know. We does that.
- 1:20:47You haven't got any of them. Actually, no, I haven't.
- 1:20:48No, no. But I've got I've narrowed down
- 1:20:50one of them is a team sport within football.
- 1:20:53Yeah, and the other one is a team short within basketball,
- 1:20:55right? Yeah.
- 1:20:56So I'm. Basically there.
- 1:20:57OK, you should be ready. Yeah.
- 1:21:02OK. So I'm not really anywhere.
- 1:21:06We've already got one. And not British, No.
- 1:21:08And they do. I've forgotten if they do team
- 1:21:11sport or not. They're both.
- 1:21:13They're all world champs, athletes.
- 1:21:14They're all world champs for athletics.
- 1:21:15Athletics. So none of them are team.
- 1:21:17I swear when we were doing this, I said please don't put World
- 1:21:20Athletics champs. People haven't watched it yet.
- 1:21:22Yeah, yeah, that was that was real nice.
- 1:21:24Was. That your and they're.
- 1:21:27Still competing? Yeah, they're still competing in
- 1:21:30the They're 2. They're two of the most famous,
- 1:21:33two of the most famous one. Of them wasn't Josh.
- 1:21:36Kerr, one of them, is like the most iconic of their sport ever.
- 1:21:40Yeah, it's, yeah, it's tough, damn.
- 1:21:46But it's like, if you're into athletics, you obviously know
- 1:21:48that. I probably do know who they are.
- 1:21:51Maybe. OK, I'm just going to have to
- 1:21:53pass then. No, you already asked the
- 1:21:56question. Yeah, I did.
- 1:21:58I'm going to go LeBron James, correct?
- 1:22:04OK. I think I've got like one more
- 1:22:06guess. OK.
- 1:22:07And I'm just going to pass. No, you just put someone out
- 1:22:11there. Come on.
- 1:22:12You know some athletes. Oh.
- 1:22:13OK, OK, OK, OK, OK, OK, OK, OK. I don't think if you said I
- 1:22:18talked about this the most iconic.
- 1:22:20Like, arguably too much you. Haven't said this person today.
- 1:22:23No, I have and I mentioned them in the last podcast as well in
- 1:22:27the game. No, the person I'm going to
- 1:22:28guess. You haven't said.
- 1:22:29All right, Well, I'm going to guess anyway.
- 1:22:31That's the term I'm not allowed to pass.
- 1:22:33Shakari Richardson. No, but that was a good guess.
- 1:22:35That was a good guess. No.
- 1:22:39So I've got one more guess. But one more guess if you get
- 1:22:42the. Football.
- 1:22:43I've got to go, yeah. I mean, it would be 1 hell of a
- 1:22:46hell mirror if you went for the other one.
- 1:22:47Yeah, yeah. Football retired.
- 1:22:52Can I have a question and then guess?
- 1:22:54Go for it. Are they British?
- 1:22:56Yeah. Bosch and they're retired and
- 1:23:00they're famous. David Beckham spawn.
- 1:23:01He had to. LeBron and David Beckham, they
- 1:23:03want to have well. You've done it.
- 1:23:04You've done twice in a row. I'll give you a shot at the hell
- 1:23:07Mary win final. Three questions.
- 1:23:10You can ask a question as well. OK.
- 1:23:13Are they female? Yeah.
- 1:23:19Serena Williams? No.
- 1:23:21Did I already ask if it was tennis?
- 1:23:22I can't remember who was it. Jessica Ennis.
- 1:23:25Hill. Oh, that's big.
- 1:23:26That's a good one. Yeah.
- 1:23:27Yeah. So I don't get Jakubinga
- 1:23:30Britson. For some reason I've just
- 1:23:34continuously thought about English people.
- 1:23:36Yeah, and I you asked. I was like none.
- 1:23:39No and every like. Sometimes remember, sometimes
- 1:23:41top. And then this one, this one is
- 1:23:43the one. They said is the American, You
- 1:23:45said no. And I guess you're curious and.
- 1:23:48Right, Yeah, I didn't even do put CNC together.
- 1:23:50The last one was Mondo Duplantis, who's the like the
- 1:23:53most goat pole vaulter of all time.
- 1:23:55You've. Definitely not said his name in
- 1:23:56this. No, but I said Keely and Jakob
- 1:23:59and I said Jakob in the and I talk about yeah, Mondo Duplantis
- 1:24:05who like. Interesting.
- 1:24:06Has the world record in the pole vault.
- 1:24:07Jakob Inger Britain based off the the discussion we had last
- 1:24:10episode. If you haven't listened to last
- 1:24:11episode, you talk about some of the best documentaries that
- 1:24:13they're offered about there. Jakobin Inger Britain's family
- 1:24:16have a documentary that followed the whole family through
- 1:24:18training. Was it him or was he?
- 1:24:20Because there's all three of the brothers or.
- 1:24:21So it was and the whole thing was incredibly toxic.
- 1:24:25Don't know if you know about this lawsuit going.
- 1:24:27Really. Yeah.
- 1:24:28Lawsuit against his dad. Because he's, no, I didn't know
- 1:24:32that. I didn't know that because they,
- 1:24:34he coaches now another Norwegian youngster.
- 1:24:38I don't know the details, so I won't comment on it.
- 1:24:40But yeah, they they all used to be coached by him.
- 1:24:42Yeah. And it, it was savage, Yeah.
- 1:24:45And it got a bit too savage. But it's, it's interesting
- 1:24:48because there's so many good Scandinavian athletes coming
- 1:24:52through now and there's like the, and even in the Iron Man,
- 1:24:55did you see that? Was it 123?
- 1:24:57123 in the world champs, yeah. Incredible.
- 1:25:00And they've kind of adopted like the double threshold days, which
- 1:25:05is similar to what Jakobin Gibritsen does when he trains.
- 1:25:07But yeah, it's, they're an interesting family and it's he's
- 1:25:10an interesting guy to follow on Instagram as well as his
- 1:25:12training, but he's been a bit injured.
- 1:25:14This season, so didn't make it to the 1500 meter final.
- 1:25:16Think he made it to the 5000 meter final, but yeah, won't
- 1:25:20comment on the results on that either.
- 1:25:21Yeah, well, we wrapped up another episode.
- 1:25:24The game seemed fantastic in preparation.
- 1:25:27We might not do that one again. If you guys enjoyed it, let us
- 1:25:30know though, because we'll obviously bring it back and
- 1:25:31we'll just do better categories. Or if you've got people that you
- 1:25:33would want us to guess and we can randomize who's guessing who
- 1:25:37and we can do that. We can make sure there's a third
- 1:25:38party adjudicated for it. However, for all of your inputs,
- 1:25:42we've grown my gears with suggested topics.
- 1:25:44If you want us to talk about something in particular, whether
- 1:25:45that's from a coaching perspective, whether that's just
- 1:25:47to gossip and have our opinions on things, let us know.
- 1:25:50Get in touch. You can put it in the comments
- 1:25:52below if you're watching on YouTube or head to app mindsets
- 1:25:54under score podcast on all socials and shoot a message.
- 1:25:59Drop a comment on one of the posts.
- 1:26:00And if you can do us the finest solid in sharing it, whether
- 1:26:04that's to your story on there or even because I've mentioned this
- 1:26:07before as well, you can now repost so you can force it on
- 1:26:10your friends. That would be great.
- 1:26:12We're here for that. And yeah, we've obviously got
- 1:26:15things coming up like the the SIM that we've got coming, but
- 1:26:18that could also be a gateway into more opportunities for you
- 1:26:20guys to come and get involved in other events that we do.
- 1:26:23So thank you very much to you guys for listening.
- 1:26:26Charles, is there anything else from?
- 1:26:27You good way to round it up I think.
- 1:26:28Awesome. In which case we look forward to
- 1:26:31seeing you in the next episode. We'll have one more episode
- 1:26:33before the SIM, I believe. I think that's how maths works
- 1:26:36and not not proven in the last game.
- 1:26:39So make sure you're subscribed and ready for that one.
- 1:26:42And we look forward to seeing you in the next episode.
