- 0:00Nobody in real estate is gonna tell you the real stuff.
- 0:03So we will.
- 0:04We're gonna talk about all the stuff that nobody posts about.
- 0:07But everybody needs to hear.
- 0:10We've been in this industry long enough to know what works.
- 0:13And long enough to know what doesn't.
- 0:15I'm Pam.
- 0:16And I'm Mackenzie.
- 0:17And this is Real Talk Real Agents.
- 0:17And this is Real Talk Real Agents.
- 0:20If you're a real estate agent that is so tired of the fake it 'til you
- 0:23make it energy, this is your show.
- 0:26We are two agents who are still in it every single day, and we are
- 0:30not coaching from the sidelines.
- 0:31We are in the trenches with you.
- 0:33No filters and no fluff.
- 0:35All right.
- 0:36Real talk starts right now.
- 0:41So the Real Talk Real Agents, I think the last one was really a kickoff.
- 0:46This is really the fist- first official episode, I think.
- 0:50It is.
- 0:50And the title of this episode is Confidence is the Cheat Code.
- 0:55Yes.
- 0:56I don't know.
- 0:56So I feel like so many agents, we talk a lot about confidence.
- 1:01That seems to be the number one thing that people feel like they
- 1:03don't have, especially as newer agents or even new-ish agents.
- 1:08They don't, I guess they fear they're gonna walk into an appointment and not
- 1:12have an answer, and so it just parlays into this lack of confidence phase.
- 1:17Absolutely.
- 1:18No matter where you are in your business, no matter what stage- … c-
- 1:21the confidence conversation comes up with agents that we interview,
- 1:25with agents that are on our team.
- 1:28How do they get to the next level?
- 1:29I think this is a, just a life topic.
- 1:32Oh.
- 1:32I feel like it's- All right.
- 1:34So true … even beyond real estate in so many ways.
- 1:36You know what I mean?
- 1:37You just meet people.
- 1:38Absolutely.
- 1:38And then we're in this lovely menopause phase of our life.
- 1:41And I think that even life changes can change maybe how you
- 1:45view yourself or your business.
- 1:47And so even though you may be older and more experienced, it doesn't mean
- 1:51that you don't sometimes struggle a little bit with confidence.
- 1:56All right.
- 1:57Yes to all of that.
- 1:58So you and I have talked a lot about this offline.
- 2:01Just personally, professionally, conversations with other
- 2:05people, not even just agents.
- 2:07Like you said- Yeah … this is a life, this is a man-woman thing.
- 2:09This isn't just a- Yeah … menopausal woman thing.
- 2:14What do you think confidence is?
- 2:16What is the definition of confidence in your mind?
- 2:19Yeah, we, and we've kinda cheated a little bit in this too, but
- 2:22I totally agree in some of our conversations we had yesterday.
- 2:26So I think people get, gain confidence in different ways.
- 2:31Some people, it feels like it's through experience, it's just doing.
- 2:35That's a good portion of the people.
- 2:37I know you like to read and learn- … and so I think you gain confidence in
- 2:41the educational piece of whatever she's doing, she's gonna read about.
- 2:45'Cause she's a teacher, right?
- 2:46So she wants to learn about it so she can teach others.
- 2:49And so I think a good p- a good part of your confidence comes
- 2:53from that educational background.
- 2:55And then there's some people just intuitively I think have
- 2:58a little bit more confidence.
- 2:59I say this all the time, I have an inordinate amount of
- 3:02confidence that I should not have.
- 3:05You should.
- 3:06It's fascinating to watch.
- 3:08But I do think it comes down to foundationally that I might not know
- 3:11all the answers, but I do know that I will find a solution, and I'm very
- 3:17equipped to make the phone calls, do the research, find somebody to help
- 3:23me with whatever that problem is.
- 3:25And so I think I can just go into it with "I'll figure it out," and
- 3:28that's always been my motto, right?
- 3:30Say yes and figure it out.
- 3:31And so I think I kinda can lean into that a little bit.
- 3:34So it's, yeah.
- 3:35And I think that's the difference between agents who grow and
- 3:39agents who struggle, right?
- 3:41We want to know how to do it to get the confidence to do it.
- 3:45And really, as much as I read about it, I can prepare myself, but I've learned
- 3:51that I have to do it- Yeah And I, for me personally, I have to do it before I
- 3:57can feel confident in showing somebody else perhaps the way, the how, right?
- 4:02When I'm talking, there's just I was, as we talked about this often and
- 4:06as different agents ask us different questions, and I'm just, sometimes
- 4:08I'm like, h- they're like, you can just rattle off this handler f- for
- 4:13this listing, for this seller, for this," and they're just like, "How?"
- 4:17And it's the repetition- Yeah … of doing it.
- 4:21So you can't get experience until you do it.
- 4:23You can't fail forward until you try, right?
- 4:25Yeah.
- 4:26You hear that that motto, fake it till you make it.
- 4:28And some people are "That's not true. You have to, scripts, and
- 4:30you have…" And yes, I believe in knowing some ideas of what to say.
- 4:34So you've been listening this long and you still haven't subscribed?
- 4:38We see you.
- 4:40Okay, so we're doing the thing.
- 4:41We're asking you to follow us.
- 4:42Now, where were we?
- 4:44Just working with agents at different phases of their career this topic of
- 4:49confidence- Yes … comes up all the time.
- 4:52And sometimes it is not about age.
- 4:55Sometimes it's not even about experience.
- 4:57Just things will come up and people feel a little rattled on confidence.
- 5:01So we thought it might be nice to just talk about Some, maybe some
- 5:06cheats that we've learned or we've seen or just observations, 'cause we
- 5:09talk about confidence all the time.
- 5:11We do, and agents are looking for, want it.
- 5:15Sometimes they don't even realize they have it.
- 5:16They just need to have- Yeah … a little bit of that belief in themselves.
- 5:20And, we all want that confidence to do something new, especially
- 5:23if we're new in real estate.
- 5:24And having said that, this really is for anyone, no matter where
- 5:27you are in your business, right?
- 5:28Correct.
- 5:28Yeah.
- 5:28Because we're always trying to grow, right?
- 5:30Or hopefully we are trying to grow, build our business in different ways.
- 5:33And we want that confidence before we've actually tried the thing.
- 5:38Yeah.
- 5:39And that's, I think, where that difference between an agent that we see that's
- 5:42gonna grow or an agent that's gonna struggle, I think it fundamentally
- 5:45seems to come down to that person has what type of mindset they have.
- 5:49Yeah.
- 5:49We talk about this a lot, too.
- 5:50If it's just more of a stagnant, closed mindset or if it's someone that is really
- 5:56up for the challenge- … and has a open mindset I think you can see some parallels
- 6:01between those different personality types at times and and confidence.
- 6:07All right.
- 6:07So if I can say this because you've said it before about yourself- Nope … is
- 6:12that it's fascinating to watch you, right?
- 6:16Just professionally as a friend, right?
- 6:18With your level of confidence in some things that you've never even done before.
- 6:21Correct.
- 6:21And I'm- And I do say it all the time, like I literally have
- 6:25more confidence than I deserve.
- 6:26So I'm just trying to rub some of it off on me, because I differently create that
- 6:33confidence by researching, by reading- Correct … by watching, by observing.
- 6:38Correct.
- 6:39But then you can get into your head.
- 6:42Correct, yes.
- 6:43And so- Do I know enough?
- 6:44Have I learned enough?
- 6:45Have I read enough- … to, yeah, to build that confidence.
- 6:47To do it, and then as agents are looking to us and talking about you'll have
- 6:50agents that will look at me and just say, "But you're so confident when
- 6:54you're talking to a seller. You sound so confident when you're on the phone with
- 6:57a buyer, with somebody, a new prospect," or whatever that… And then, so my
- 7:01immediate response is no, I'm just as…
- 7:04I lack the confidence as much as you do." But then I really
- 7:07thought about it and, yes, I read.
- 7:10Yes, I consume as much information as I can, but it's from that repetition
- 7:14of having those conversations with sellers, with buyers- Yes … with
- 7:17other agents- … with networking.
- 7:19So I don't know.
- 7:20Do you have any thoughts on that?
- 7:21Yeah.
- 7:21I think we've gotten to it in different ways, 'cause we have
- 7:25different personalities, right?
- 7:26But I think it's very similar.
- 7:28It's just in different ways.
- 7:29So I think the confidence does come from activity- … from action, and
- 7:35maybe it was not real estate related.
- 7:37I don't know.
- 7:38We traveled to Philadelphia this past weekend.
- 7:40We did.
- 7:41And it's so interesting to watch just people in general.
- 7:44I have a fascination with just the psychology of just people in general.
- 7:48But you do have folks that have lived in the same little place their whole life.
- 7:51Their bubble is so small.
- 7:53And then our parents, right?
- 7:55They tell us to be careful.
- 7:56Don't do that.
- 7:58We- we're constantly pulling people back from a very young age from any type
- 8:04of action to get them outside of this comfort zone And then you have people
- 8:10that have maybe had life thrust upon them.
- 8:14And I feel like I qualify as one of those people, that you've maybe had to learn,
- 8:19again, not about real estate, but just learn that, "Hey, I survived that shit.
- 8:23That did not take me down.
- 8:25All right it did something, scare the crap out of me, but I'm on the other
- 8:28side of it now." And so I think through some repetition there, but it is, at
- 8:33the end of the day, a choice and action taking, whether it's through learning
- 8:39and script play, or just experience that way, or it's maybe some life
- 8:44experience that you can lean into.
- 8:47That's fascinating, that psychology- … that you brought up, because I don't
- 8:50know that I grew up in an environment.
- 8:52I did grow environment that I was just like, "I gotta figure this out." Yes.
- 8:55I had, and have, a very stable, n- no family's perfect.
- 9:00Love you mom and dad- yeah … if you're listening to this.
- 9:03That it was, be careful, be safe.
- 9:06Make the safe, care- be- make the safe and careful choice.
- 9:09Which has gotten me very far.
- 9:11Correct.
- 9:12However, to get out of my comfort zone and to do that next thing, I've had
- 9:16to then learn to, "Kate, you're gonna have to jump before you learn how
- 9:19to swim, and be okay with failing."
- 9:23Yes.
- 9:23And that's hard for a people pleaser like me, just for the record.
- 9:26Any people pleasers out there, I'm trying to work on that, but- Yeah … I
- 9:31think that's also an incred- when I, talking to agents and just thinking
- 9:34about conversations, s- again, we're not psychologists, but so much of this
- 9:37comes from, how we were raised- Yeah
- 9:39And our belief, our internal belief system.
- 9:42Agreed.
- 9:42I think that's part of it, too, and I think confidence does, at
- 9:45the end of the day, you don't think that you have all the answers.
- 9:48Oh, yeah.
- 9:49I know I don't have all the answers, too, so I'm not coming at confidence
- 9:53from a standpoint that I think I know anything better than anyone else.
- 9:56But what I do know m- so very solidly is who I am as a person,
- 10:03and that I care about people, and that I will figure out a solution.
- 10:07I'll figure it out.
- 10:08S- okay.
- 10:08They lack the confidence.
- 10:10Yeah.
- 10:10What are some actionable steps that maybe we've taken, or that we've seen
- 10:13other people taken, and we didn't die.
- 10:16We didn't blow up our lives, yeah.
- 10:17And just something they can take away the next time they're going on another
- 10:20appointment, that they're just don't, they lack that confidence and… So I do think
- 10:23there are some cheats that you can do.
- 10:26First of all is I think, and it sounds maybe silly, but
- 10:30appearance can sometimes help you.
- 10:32It's maybe false confidence, but it certainly doesn't hurt.
- 10:35So I tell myself this if I'm going into a listing appointment
- 10:38of a really fancy, dance-y house.
- 10:41I'm gonna feel vet better about that presentation if, if I feel
- 10:45like I'm putting my best foot forward aesthetically, personally.
- 10:49And then coming to the table as prepared as possible.
- 10:52But scripting, I know that's something that you do a lot.
- 10:54It's just, it's practice, right?
- 10:56It's just giving yourself the opportunity to know the words a little bit more
- 11:01fluently than maybe you would just off the cuff because you don't, you
- 11:06lack a little bit of that experience.
- 11:09Yes, and, excuse me, and I think what really helps in that, getting over that
- 11:13hump of having to learn it all before I even try to do it, was going in with
- 11:18that mindset and setting the expectation for myself is I'm not gonna have all
- 11:21the answers, and being okay to say that to the person I'm talking to across.
- 11:24Yeah.
- 11:24'Cause what I have learned is people I don't think are expecting
- 11:27me to have all the answers.
- 11:28I think they're expecting me to be honest- Correct … and true and
- 11:32come from that place of service, and come from that place that I do wanna
- 11:35help you buy or sell or, reinvest.
- 11:38Whatever their goal is, I can walk away whether I get the listing, whether the
- 11:43buyer wants to work with me, whether an agent joins our team, I can feel
- 11:48that I've come from the right place and asked the right questions and
- 11:50been as honest as I possibly can be.
- 11:52And then at least I can walk away from that just respecting, again, going
- 11:55back to who I am and what we're trying to build and create for other people.
- 11:59I think at the end of the day, people are looking for someone that they can trust.
- 12:03That's just the baseline- … for all of this.
- 12:05So you just being yourself, having real conversations, not afraid to ask
- 12:11questions, and being less concerned over, am I saying things perfectly?
- 12:17Is my brochure pretty enough?
- 12:20People could give two shits about- … any of that, right?
- 12:24Even though we have them all.
- 12:25Oh, we do.
- 12:26Look, I have gone down a dark hole on marketing, so this is coming
- 12:29from someone that really does care.
- 12:32But yeah, I mean- … it's, are you trustworthy?
- 12:35Are you coming across that way?
- 12:37Do people feel like you have their best interest in mind?
- 12:40If you feel that solidly too, if you know who you are- … and you have
- 12:44high integrity, I f- I feel like that is the foundation for your confidence.
- 12:49So lean into that before experience.
- 12:52Absolutely.
- 12:54So today, after this podcast, we want you guys to go out there and
- 12:58maybe try something that you think that you've lacked confidence in
- 13:01but feel very passionate about.
- 13:03Because what we have experienced is that passion and that love for other
- 13:08people and what you're doing will come out, and it will look like confidence.
- 13:12Okay, so we're basically everywhere now, and we're still not over it.
