Something about the word “dangerous” feels extreme until you’ve lived through a relationship that quietly teaches you to shrink. I’m Kim Lee, a child and adolescent psychotherapist, and I’m opening a new series called Dangerous Relationships with a clear definition: this isn’t about ordinary conflict, rough patches, or a couple who argues. It’s about a repeated pattern of behavior that steadily diminishes emotional wellbeing, psychological freedom, sense of identity, and the ability to make independent choices, sometimes alongside threats or risk of physical harm.
