1:04

1:40
SPEAKER_04: Thank you, thank you for that wonderful introduction.
1:43
SPEAKER_04: Yes, I did get this job by dating the host, but careful with those words, my friend.
1:53
SPEAKER_03: Yes, I'm so excited for John to be joining me.
1:56
SPEAKER_03: And as you've heard in the podcast, Caroline, Ian, and I have been scattered across the globe.
2:02
SPEAKER_03: And so, you know, sometimes it just feels good to be sitting face to face with another podcaster speaking into a mic.
2:10
SPEAKER_03: So, John, you're here to fill a hole.
2:16
SPEAKER_03: I wanted to get to know John a little bit more.
2:21
SPEAKER_03: Not me, but you, listener.
2:22
SPEAKER_03: I know you're you have burning questions about John.
2:26
SPEAKER_03: Um, so my first one is who are you?
2:30
SPEAKER_03: What do you do?
2:32
SPEAKER_04: Well, as Parker said, my name is John.
2:35
SPEAKER_04: I am by day a nurse, by night, a scary movie fan.
2:42
SPEAKER_03: That's it?
2:43
SPEAKER_04: That's it?
2:44
SPEAKER_04: I mean, how would how in depth do you want me to go?
2:46
SPEAKER_03: Well, I would describe you as a freak and a um let's see, what else?
2:54
SPEAKER_03: I would describe you also as a fool and a fun phantom of film.
3:01
SPEAKER_03: There you go.
3:02
SPEAKER_03: Some good alliteration for you.
3:04
SPEAKER_03: Um, John has uh bleach blonde hair, so it's like a ghost in here.
3:09
SPEAKER_03: Go my own ghost face staring right at me.
3:13
SPEAKER_03: Um, I want to know.
3:15
SPEAKER_03: You said that you're a scary movie fan, but I mean, big words on a podcast like this.
3:22
SPEAKER_03: So, what is your relationship with horror?
3:24
SPEAKER_03: How did you get into it in the first place?
3:26
SPEAKER_03: Have you been casual?
3:28
SPEAKER_03: Are you a like a super fan?
3:30
SPEAKER_03: What's going on?
3:31
SPEAKER_04: I definitely feel like I go through phases of my love of horror.
3:35
SPEAKER_04: I will go through uh times where I'm just not really in the mood to watch a horror movie, and then other times I just can't get enough where I will watch several a day.
3:45
SPEAKER_02: Oh wow.
3:46
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
3:46
SPEAKER_04: Wow.
3:47
SPEAKER_04: I first started watching horror, oh god, over ten years ago when I was in middle school.
3:55
SPEAKER_04: Oh.
3:56
SPEAKER_04: I'm not that young.
3:57
SPEAKER_04: Thank you though.
3:58
SPEAKER_04: I know I look good for my age.
4:00
SPEAKER_04: You're in the twenties.
4:02
SPEAKER_04: Um, when I was in middle school, my friends and I used to go to Hastings and we could rent rated R movies back then because my brother worked there.
4:13
SPEAKER_04: And we would find just the most random movies in the horror section and go to my parents' basement.
4:21
SPEAKER_04: Unfinished concrete basement to be exact.
4:25
SPEAKER_04: And watch horror movies all weekend because what else are you supposed to do when you live in the middle of nowhere, Idaho?
4:32
SPEAKER_03: If you could remember, can you identify maybe like a first horror movie?
4:37
SPEAKER_04: I do remember the first horror movie I saw because my brother and I got caught watching Chucky.
4:44
SPEAKER_04: I was probably seven, I would say, and my dad caught us in the basement watching it on cable.
4:52
SPEAKER_04: The first one, Child's Play?
4:53
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
4:54
SPEAKER_04: And let's say he was not pleased at the fact that we were watching Chucky at such a moldable age.
5:02
SPEAKER_03: Parents are freaks, and if anything is the real horror, it's uh them not letting us watch horror because I was in the same boat.
5:09
SPEAKER_03: Now, I have to ask, I ask every guest.
5:11
SPEAKER_03: Of course, this is a cumulative show.
5:14
SPEAKER_03: We will discover new favorites as we progress, and we're at the very beginning of a new um season, so we're all clean slates.
5:24
SPEAKER_03: But pre-season for a life-changing event of recording what's your favorite scary movie?
5:30
SPEAKER_03: What is your favorite scary movie?
5:37
SPEAKER_04: This is a tough one.
5:38
SPEAKER_04: There's just so many good ones out there, but if I was gonna have to pick, I would have to say hereditary.
5:45
SPEAKER_04: Shit.
5:45
SPEAKER_03: I knew you ran a few options past me, and this is unexpected.
5:49
SPEAKER_04: I took some deep thought.
5:51
SPEAKER_04: I went on a spiritual quest to find my favorite scary movie, and I think that's it.
5:56
SPEAKER_04: I love Ari Astor's style of horror movie.
6:00
SPEAKER_03: He's got new work coming this year, recording.
6:02
SPEAKER_04: I'm excited.
6:05
SPEAKER_04: Also, another fun fact about me is my grandma used to be involved in a cult.
6:10
SPEAKER_03: What the fuck?
6:11
SPEAKER_03: What kind of cult?
6:12
SPEAKER_04: She was part of like a weird new age crystal cult.
6:16
SPEAKER_04: Um, she used to send me blessed teddy bears that had crystals inside of them to protect me and my siblings.
6:26
SPEAKER_03: Well, enough about you.
6:28
SPEAKER_03: Nobody cares.
6:29
SPEAKER_03: Hey.
6:30
SPEAKER_03: We're here to talk about what everyone has been waiting their literal whole lives for.
6:36
SPEAKER_03: We're here to talk about Scream 5.
6:38
SPEAKER_03: As I mentioned earlier, this is spoiler free.
6:41
SPEAKER_03: So if you have not gotten a chance to see Scream 5, you're just itching to and want some more info, or you just are looking to put on a fun podcast, well, we got you covered.
6:51
SPEAKER_03: And if you're like, well shit, I wanted to hear all of it broken down.
6:55
SPEAKER_03: I'm super fan, I've seen the movie, I want to know all your thoughts on the spoilers.
6:59
SPEAKER_03: You're going to have to come back next week because John, Julianne, and I are going to be breaking down all of the spoilers from Scream 5.
7:09
SPEAKER_03: And this week and next week, we're going to have very special clips from some very special interviews that I conducted with the cast and crew from Scream 5.
7:22
SPEAKER_03: So definitely stay tuned for that.
7:23
SPEAKER_03: I'm really excited about all of this.
7:25
SPEAKER_03: Let's get down to business.
7:28
SPEAKER_03: Scream 5 was released in theaters last week on Friday, January 14th, 2022.
7:35
SPEAKER_03: Literally, I wrote 2020 in the outline because I'm trapped in time.
7:41
SPEAKER_03: It was directed by the Radio Silence team that we love.
7:45
SPEAKER_03: Matt Bedanelli Ulpin and Tyler Gillett.
7:49
SPEAKER_03: Gillette, I don't know, um, directed the new Scream film as well as executive producer Chad Villella.
7:57
SPEAKER_03: They form a little trio that we have grown to love for their work on Ready or Not, among other things.
8:04
SPEAKER_03: Um we are going to kind of rapid fire some of this because this is just kind of the the build-up to next week's episode.
8:13
SPEAKER_03: We want to get all the fact of the iceberg.
8:15
SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
8:16
SPEAKER_03: So we're going to plow through these facts, and then we're going to get to some fun stuff, and then even more fun stuff next week.
8:23
SPEAKER_03: Scream 5 is written by Ready or Not writer Guy Busick, as well as written, it was also written by James Vanderbilt, who was a producer on Ready or Not and a writer on Zodiac, which I thought was an interesting connection.
8:37
SPEAKER_03: He's written on many things, but Zodiac was the most applicable to a horror podcast.
8:42
SPEAKER_03: Have you seen Zodiac, John?
8:43
SPEAKER_03: Of course I've seen Zodiac.
8:45
SPEAKER_03: It's a classic.
8:46
SPEAKER_03: It's really more like a depressive, so it's a sad movie.
8:52
SPEAKER_03: Uh, it is.
8:54
SPEAKER_03: Alright, um, John, why don't you take it away with who is showing up in this movie?
9:00
SPEAKER_04: Like all of our favorite scream movies, our favorite core group is back for Scream 5.
9:07
SPEAKER_04: We have Nev Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courtney Cox as none other than the gorgeous gale weathers, and David Arquette as Dewey or Daddy Dewey, as I like to refer to him.
9:21
SPEAKER_04: And we do have the wonderful Marley Shelton as Deputy Hicks.
9:29
SPEAKER_04: Do we want to reveal?
9:31
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she has gotten a slank promo since last movie.
9:35
SPEAKER_03: She is now sheriff.
9:36
SPEAKER_03: Back as Sheriff Hicks.
9:39
SPEAKER_03: Um, and uh just so you know, stay tuned because we shared some words with Marley Shelton, our fave, former second in command, now runner of the Woodsboro ship.
9:54
SPEAKER_04: Yes.
9:55
SPEAKER_04: We also have a great new cast joining us for Scream 5.
10:00
SPEAKER_04: We have Jenna Ortega.
10:01
SPEAKER_03: Oh, and did you know she is going to be appearing as Wednesday Adams in the new Netflix series Wednesday?
10:08
SPEAKER_04: I did not know that.
10:09
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm curious to see what's going on with that.
10:12
SPEAKER_03: I believe it is created by Tim Burton.
10:14
unknown: Yes.
10:15
SPEAKER_04: We also have Melissa Barrera.
10:17
SPEAKER_03: And we just saw her in In the Heights.
10:19
SPEAKER_03: She's got a great singing voice.
10:21
SPEAKER_04: She does.
10:21
SPEAKER_04: I loved her in that movie.
10:22
SPEAKER_03: Scream the Musical?
10:24
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Scream the Musical coming out in 2023.
10:27
SPEAKER_04: I heard that's gonna be Scream Six.
10:29
SPEAKER_03: Don't even.
10:29
SPEAKER_03: I would jump out of this building because I'd be so excited.
10:34
SPEAKER_04: We also have Jack Quaid.
10:36
SPEAKER_03: Did you see the boys on Amazon?
10:38
SPEAKER_04: I did not see the boys.
10:39
SPEAKER_04: I have not watched.
10:40
SPEAKER_04: Pretty good.
10:42
SPEAKER_04: We have Dylan Minetti or Minette?
10:45
SPEAKER_03: That's a good question, and I'll leave it to you.
10:48
SPEAKER_03: But you'll recognize that name from our episode on Don't Breathe.
10:53
SPEAKER_04: Yes, very good.
10:54
SPEAKER_04: That almost made my favorite horror movie.
10:56
SPEAKER_03: She.
10:57
SPEAKER_04: Uh, we also have Jasmine Savoy Brown.
11:01
SPEAKER_03: She's blowing up right now, as with the original Scream movie, many of the subsequent ones.
11:07
SPEAKER_03: A great uh young cast that has a burgeoning career is the name of the game.
11:13
SPEAKER_03: And Jasmine Savoy Brown is blowing up right now in the cast of Yellow Jackets on Showtime.
11:18
SPEAKER_04: We need to get caught up on that.
11:20
SPEAKER_04: It has been amazing so far.
11:22
SPEAKER_04: You should watch if you have not.
11:25
SPEAKER_04: We also have a Mason Gooding.
11:27
SPEAKER_03: Again, he's blowing up for his performance in Love Victor and a few years ago, but he was in Book Smart as well.
11:34
SPEAKER_04: We also have Sonia Amar and Mikey Madison joining the crew.
11:41
SPEAKER_03: Well, congrats to everyone on uh being famous now.
11:45
SPEAKER_03: And a little summary of Scream 5.
11:48
SPEAKER_03: This movie is about a young lass named Samantha Carpenter.
11:52
SPEAKER_03: Yes, Melissa Barrera's character, Samantha Carpenter.
11:55
SPEAKER_03: She's called back to her hometown, of course, Woodsboro, after her sister, played by Jenna Ortega, is attacked by a new ghost face killer.
12:06
SPEAKER_03: Why does that always seem so weird to say ghost face killer?
12:10
SPEAKER_03: Ghost face killer, who is also attacking the descendants of those connected to the original massacre.
12:17
SPEAKER_03: Yes, we have ancestors, not quite in the same way as Scream 4, where we had a cousin.
12:24
SPEAKER_03: Um And really that's the only relationship.
12:27
SPEAKER_03: Scream 3.
12:28
SPEAKER_03: We had the ghost.
12:30
SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, the killer in that, a half brother.
12:32
SPEAKER_03: Well, yes, cut this is a new spin on the um relationship game.
12:38
SPEAKER_03: And of course, Sydney, Gail, and Dewey get roped into the mix.
12:42
SPEAKER_03: Now, John and I are recording this episode before Scream 5 has been released.
12:46
SPEAKER_03: We had the pleasure of getting to see the movie early.
12:49
SPEAKER_03: Um, so there is not currently any Rotten Tomatoes information to share, but I'm just expecting something spectacular.
12:57
SPEAKER_03: So make sure you go check rottentomatoes.com um to see what everyone's saying.
13:03
SPEAKER_03: I love being involved in the conversation, seeing culture evolve, even though, of course, Rotten Tomatoes is not the bellwether of taste that everybody thinks it is.
13:14
SPEAKER_03: So, brain of soul.
13:16
SPEAKER_03: So, in lieu of a Rotten Tomatoes consensus, since we don't have it, we will simply have to make our own.
13:25
SPEAKER_03: And I have to come out by saying that I had a hell of a time watching Scream 5.
13:31
SPEAKER_03: John and I were running late to the screening, and my heart was already pounding, having a full meltdown.
13:38
SPEAKER_04: So let's say Parker was in a foul mood on the train that day.
13:43
SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, matters beyond our control.
13:47
SPEAKER_03: Um, so I got into the movie theater and like had to calm down as the the opening scene was playing, which should be the opposite.
13:56
SPEAKER_03: But um, I just have to say, this movie was so thrilling, and I think the first thing that really stood out to me is how good the writing is, and the jokes and the satire, all of it seemed like such classic scream writing.
14:09
SPEAKER_03: Of course, Kevin Williamson is an executive producer on Scream 5, but he is not behind, he's not in the writing chair for this one.
14:17
SPEAKER_03: Um, but I just felt a lot of classic scream presence in this, and I know that in our Screamathon episode from last week that we had some predictions on, I was absolutely perplexed.
14:30
SPEAKER_03: My small monkey brain could not comprehend what um they would be talking about in this one, and we have some really interesting things to discuss that are even more relevant than I thought possible.
14:43
SPEAKER_03: Um John, what did you think of the movie's depiction of fan culture?
14:49
SPEAKER_03: Which is I feel like the tip of the tongue for a lot of conversations we're having these days about film.
14:55
SPEAKER_04: Hmm.
14:56
SPEAKER_04: Fan culture.
14:58
SPEAKER_03: Well, let me give you a little tip since I can see you the the cogs turning.
15:03
SPEAKER_03: Cogs are turning.
15:04
SPEAKER_03: I mean, we just have so much explosive conversation around film these days, where I think screens really tapping in that like people are opposing it like it literally is life or death.
15:14
SPEAKER_03: All the stuff around the Snyder Cut for the um Justice League movie, and I mean Star Wars fandom.
15:22
SPEAKER_03: And even within horror, we mentioned in our Screamathon episode how crazy the discourse was around the Black Christmas remake and people just going absolutely nuts about anyone daring to lay a finger on uh IP that they have any sort of feelings for.
15:39
SPEAKER_04: It is an interesting take, but I mean it really I don't feel like it's far off.
15:44
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
15:44
SPEAKER_04: I mean, people get insane about movies, especially franchises that they love.
15:50
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
15:51
SPEAKER_04: People get very defensive over things like that.
15:55
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and of course, Scream is 25 years old at this point, so there is a lot of feelings, and I think it's kind of smart.
16:03
SPEAKER_03: I mean, of course, I don't think that it excuses the movie from any sort of discourse, because I'm sure there are people who are going to be like, you're just like the people the movie is talking about.
16:14
SPEAKER_03: But at the same time, like I think it's really intelligent because the creators, I'm sure, were very aware of what the conversation was going to be around, even just the announcement of this movie, and what was going to come of it.
16:28
SPEAKER_04: So Yeah, I mean, they also talked about how franchises evolve to not only please old fans but gain new ones.
16:37
SPEAKER_04: Something that was also talked about in Scream 4, if I'm remembering correctly.
16:42
SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
16:43
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's kind of a theme.
16:45
SPEAKER_03: Um, and the other thing that I love that actually I discussed in the Screamathon episode in my predictions, but was like, there's no way they can do that, is um the riff on the elevated horror, uh prestige horror, um, new horror, as I said the New York Times called it.
17:04
SPEAKER_03: Um, I was like, there's no way they can do that because I feel like in the past, Scream has always like the movies have kind of been what they're discussing, and I was like, well, they can't be that kind of movie because they have to be a little goofy too.
17:20
SPEAKER_03: But I loved kind of there were just like lines peppered throughout um about how how like trashy, of course they're talking about stab movies because scream doesn't know scream exists.
17:35
SPEAKER_03: They're talking about stab, but they use stab as such a great conduit for being like those movies are so trashy and they're so out.
17:42
SPEAKER_03: It's all about they talk about like the Babaduck and Hereditary and the Witch, which are all movies that I love.
17:47
SPEAKER_04: All great movies.
17:48
SPEAKER_03: Um but I like that they use that as kind of a conduit for um also not only the fan culture conversation, but just looking at less what people view as less um important movies.
18:06
SPEAKER_03: So I thought that was really fabulous and a really good um take on modern horror culture.
18:14
SPEAKER_03: Do you have any any pros off the bat?
18:17
SPEAKER_03: Like any big things that you're like, yes, I love that.
18:21
SPEAKER_04: I really loved how they combined the old cast of um Sydney, Gail, and Dewey with the new cast.
18:33
SPEAKER_04: I thought they did an excellent job.
18:35
SPEAKER_04: I found myself being more interested in the new cast, which I versus the old cast, which I think is good just because it was such a hassle to get um Nev Campbell and David Arquette and Courtney Cox to sign on for this movie.
18:54
SPEAKER_04: So I mean, who knows what's gonna happen for the next one.
18:57
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I think as well, like Scream 4, as much as it did the whole, like it's a sequel and reboot, there are the two casts kind of acting side by side, like that movie is about it's still about Sydney, and this one I found Like they're obviously still a part of it, but it really focused on the new cast.
19:22
SPEAKER_04: And it made me excited for the future of Scream.
19:25
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it really gave them a moment to shine, and of course, this is no spoilers, but like the I really grew to enjoy some of the characters, and I would be really thrilled if there's a Scream 6 to see the ones that make it out.
19:40
SPEAKER_03: Uh 1 slash 1s.
19:42
SPEAKER_03: I w who knows?
19:44
SPEAKER_03: Um I would be really thrilled to see them in upcoming movies.
19:49
SPEAKER_03: Um, whether uh shockingly, whether Sydney, Gail, and Dewey are there or not.
19:56
SPEAKER_03: Like I think they've really set up a powerful cast that these characters that we have grown with in the Scream franchise can start to go away a bit as we grow into some new characters.
20:11
SPEAKER_04: Another good thing I thought they did in this movie is they really elevated the kill scenes specifically.
20:17
SPEAKER_04: There was some crazy shit.
20:19
SPEAKER_04: There were some really good kill scenes in this one that were not as uh let me rephrase that.
20:29
SPEAKER_03: No, I think you're on a good track.
20:30
SPEAKER_03: I mean, they weren't what I expected.
20:33
SPEAKER_04: There were some that they're very different from what we've seen in other Scream movies.
20:37
SPEAKER_04: That's what I was trying to say.
20:39
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, do you have like a spoiler-free um keep it a little vague example of like because I mean I think but I also said this about Scream 4.
20:50
SPEAKER_03: The violence in this movie is really vicious, sometimes feels a little cruel, in ways that I think are, if you don't pull it off know how to pull off a horror movie, can be really uncomfortable, but are landed in this movie in a way that make them feel like the movie has earned it and that you're willing to like suffer through for that little thrill of like let's just say that Ghostface they put a lot of umph behind their stabbing in this movie that we have not seen in the older ones.
21:25
SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes.
21:26
SPEAKER_03: I actually agree with that.
21:27
SPEAKER_03: I mean, I feel like the older ones have really taken their time in cinematic ways with a well-shot, well-timed single stab.
21:39
SPEAKER_03: I mean, if you think about even Casey Becker in the first movie, I mean, she gets stabbed many times, but I mean everyone thinks about she's running, she gets that stabbed to the chest, and then he kind of tackles her, she takes off the mask, and you see the arm raise up and it's stabbed.
21:55
SPEAKER_03: Like it's all about the one well placed stab.
21:58
SPEAKER_03: And this one Like there is someone who is like stab stab stabby.
22:05
SPEAKER_03: Um it is really violent, and I feel like scream four was more violent the other one, and then the other ones in a way that was more gory.
22:13
SPEAKER_03: This one's not necessarily more gory.
22:15
SPEAKER_04: It is more I would say scream four is more gory.
22:19
SPEAKER_04: This one is more gruesome.
22:21
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
22:21
SPEAKER_04: And I think it's very fitting because I mean, like, this movie is all about, it's all about fan culture and like fans getting ravenous and riled up over movies.
22:33
SPEAKER_04: And another fun fact about me, I love true crime documentaries.
22:37
SPEAKER_04: Investigation Discovery Network is my jam.
22:41
SPEAKER_04: And stabbing is always a very personal and passionate way to murder someone.
22:46
SPEAKER_04: And you really felt that in these movies.
22:48
SPEAKER_03: In this movie.
22:50
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, in this movie.
22:51
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
22:53
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I feel the same way, but I also feel like this movie, um, in a way that honestly, and I know that people on Twitter and stuff are being like, oh my god, this is the best movie ever created, and like, I'm not gonna give you that.
23:06
SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna tell you that because I don't think this is the best movie ever created.
23:09
SPEAKER_03: I don't think this is my favorite screen movie, but I will say I feel like this one, since the original, the OG, gets right, the balance of violence, the the horror and the humor, I think better than a lot of the sequels do.
23:26
SPEAKER_03: I might say than any sequel does.
23:29
SPEAKER_03: I really felt like I I laughed at many things.
23:34
SPEAKER_03: There were many good jokes, a lot of good callbacks.
23:37
SPEAKER_03: It really does a good good, it has a good way of carrying on some inside jokes with Scream fans.
23:43
SPEAKER_03: But it's another one where I had to step back and be like, wow, this is icky, like gross things are happening.
23:48
SPEAKER_03: And I feel like the, you know, of course, Scream 3 went so far into comedy for reasons out of its control.
23:55
SPEAKER_03: Uh Scream 2, I've said before, I think drags a little bit too much, and that like it's not exciting enough.
24:02
SPEAKER_03: And Scream 4, I think it's a little too serious and gets a little too horror happy.
24:06
SPEAKER_03: And I feel like this one finds a really good balance.
24:10
SPEAKER_03: Um and the vibe is different.
24:13
SPEAKER_03: You can tell there are new creators behind it, I think.
24:17
SPEAKER_03: I agree.
24:18
SPEAKER_03: But I don't think in a bad way.
24:20
SPEAKER_03: I was really worried that this movie was going to feel alienating for people who love the original franchise like I do.
24:29
SPEAKER_03: But I think that it's more just new generation type thing.
24:33
SPEAKER_04: I think they did a very good job about respecting Wes Craven's legacy, but also putting their own mark on the franchise now.
24:43
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and of course, this I'm not saying this to say that like, you know, Wes Craven get out of here, because of course we miss him and his movies are iconic, and I wish he was still making Scream movies, but you're right that they do a really good job of paying homage to him.
24:59
SPEAKER_03: And I have one more thought to share before I want to get into a little bit of my interview with the Radio Silence team, um, because they speak specifically to this.
25:12
SPEAKER_03: And actually, I asked them this because I there's one thing that I didn't quite enjoy about this movie, and I was excited to hear them speak more to it to see if they could change my mind or make me understand a little bit more.
25:25
SPEAKER_03: But I felt like some of this movie was visually a little chaotic, and I never got a really grounded sense of where I was.
25:34
SPEAKER_03: I felt like we were in locations that were all new.
25:38
SPEAKER_03: I've never been to these people's houses.
25:40
SPEAKER_03: Besides, of course, we've all seen in the trailer that we arrive at Stu's house um at some point.
25:46
SPEAKER_03: But even there, it was very Even there.
25:49
SPEAKER_03: I mean, of course, it's been 25 years.
25:51
SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
25:51
SPEAKER_03: They can reno whatever.
25:53
SPEAKER_03: I love a reno.
25:54
SPEAKER_03: I would love to see you scream the prequel where they just are doing little house renovation.
26:00
SPEAKER_03: Um, but even there, like, it's just like I never got a strong sense of of location, and like I could keep track of where all of the characters were in relation to each other, which to me is really important because it helps me to map my prediction, try and solve the puzzle, and figure out who's where and who's doing the killing.
26:22
SPEAKER_03: And even larger than that, I had a a bit of a hard time grounding myself in Woodsboro.
26:29
SPEAKER_03: And I think that it's really fascinating.
26:31
SPEAKER_03: Scream one, four, and now five takes place in Woodsboro, and I find it fascinating the different ways that those movies depict the town.
26:42
SPEAKER_03: Of course, Scream One is like we're in the middle of nowhere.
26:45
SPEAKER_03: Scream four seems like a pretty big town.
26:47
SPEAKER_03: I wouldn't say big city, but like it seems like it's kind of a bustling place.
26:52
SPEAKER_03: And Scream 5 lands somewhere in the middle.
26:56
SPEAKER_03: They did not film this one in California, but they filmed it in the South.
27:01
SPEAKER_03: But I mean, I I just felt a little bit like I didn't recognize the place that I was seeing, and I never knew where people were going.
27:09
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was very hard to track the characters, especially during the climax of the movie where you're trying to You're really getting down to the nitty card.
27:20
SPEAKER_04: Affirm you're trying to like affirm your prediction of who is Ghostface, this movie.
27:26
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
27:27
SPEAKER_03: Or and I think this movie does a really good job of keeping us guessing on that, but also like it doesn't do the best job of letting us guess, if that makes sense.
27:36
SPEAKER_03: So I want to get to a little bit of my interview.
27:39
SPEAKER_03: Again, spoiler-free, you will have more juice, more gos to share next week from the Radio Silence team.
27:47
SPEAKER_03: But let's hear a little bit of their spoiler-free words about creating Scream.
27:54
SPEAKER_03: All right, well, uh, congratulations on the movie.
27:58
SPEAKER_03: I uh saw it yesterday and I still am having like breakdowns every couple of seconds thinking about it because it was so good.
28:06
SPEAKER_03: Oh I'm just so excited about it.
28:10
SPEAKER_03: And uh, I guess hi, I'm Parker.
28:12
SPEAKER_03: You probably Parker, Matt Tyler Chad.
28:15
SPEAKER_03: Nice to meet you.
28:16
SPEAKER_03: I'm with the podcast that's called What's Your Favorite Scary Movie?
28:20
SPEAKER_03: So to say I'm a fan is an understatement.
28:24
SPEAKER_03: Uh, so I guess just like getting right into it, because it sounds like you guys are having the longest day.
28:31
SPEAKER_03: Um, Ready or Not is incredible.
28:34
SPEAKER_03: And I was thinking about how Ready or Not has such a signature style to it and such a strong voice.
28:42
SPEAKER_03: And I was wondering, uh, when jumping into something like Scream that has like an established vocabulary, what was your process on like balancing your style versus what's already there?
28:56
SPEAKER_07: I mean, that was uh that was a big part of the process starting from day one.
29:02
SPEAKER_07: You know, we we I we met with our the first person we met with once we started to do the move, knew we were gonna do the movie was our DP, who also shot ready or not.
29:11
SPEAKER_07: And it was we love him and we loved working with him.
29:14
SPEAKER_07: He's so talented.
29:15
SPEAKER_07: We tolerate.
29:16
SPEAKER_07: I mean, he's always to tolerate Brett, but but we sat down with him and we had a beer, and we just kind of the conversation was essentially that it was we need this movie to feel like a scream movie, but we also need it to feel like a new movie and to feel like our movie and to feel like it's something that's pushing this franchise forward and not just relishing in the past.
29:37
SPEAKER_07: And I don't I don't think we knew this then, but what we had we came to find out over the course of making the movie is that that was a conversation we had basically every day of the process, you know, with every single department head, with the actors, with everybody.
29:51
SPEAKER_07: It's how do we make sure that this movie is firmly in the world of Scream, but also feels modern and feels fresh, and and most importantly, pushes the franchise forward and tells like a new story.
30:04
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and I think I think we sort of knew this in our hearts as well, certainly as just fans of movies, but specifically as fans of Scream, what we would want from this movie.
30:16
SPEAKER_06: I don't think that if you had asked us before we read the script, like what would you what story would you tell if you could make the fifth installment in the screen franchise?
30:24
SPEAKER_06: I don't think we would have had an answer for it.
30:26
SPEAKER_07: Sydney on an island just enjoying my ties and living her nerves.
30:31
SPEAKER_07: We need to make that one.
30:33
SPEAKER_07: I'd watch it.
30:34
SPEAKER_06: Yes, more shorts and flip-flops with a ghost.
30:38
SPEAKER_06: Um, no, but there was, I think what what we did know is that being because of our our level of fandom, that we have a sort of muscle memory about what we love about these movies.
30:48
SPEAKER_06: And so I think that was really the compass going into reading the script.
30:52
SPEAKER_06: It was, is this, is it gonna, are we gonna feel excited the way that we would expect to feel excited by a new screen movie, or is it gonna feel like we're rehashing something that we're already familiar with?
31:05
SPEAKER_06: And I think that I think that's a really that was a real tight rope to walk.
31:09
SPEAKER_06: And and really Guy and Jamie did it, did it so beautifully.
31:12
SPEAKER_06: And certainly we we know the two of them really well, and I think have a have a real kinship and a real, I think, shared, shared creative taste that um also made falling in love with not only the process, but the script really, really easy for us.
31:27
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's awesome.
31:28
SPEAKER_03: And I'm also wondering, kind of on a similar note, I'm really fascinated by the different ways that each film that takes place in Woodsboro depicts Woodsboro.
31:38
SPEAKER_03: And so I'm wondering when you were trying to think of like the visual style or what you wanted to express about the town of Woodsboro, was there any certain process for like what exactly you wanted Woodsboro to be in Scream 5, Scream 2020, whatever we're calling it?
31:58
SPEAKER_06: Well, we definitely didn't want it to not look like it was in the deep south, which is where we Yeah, no, we did not want it, which was dodging lakes and moss hanging from trees.
32:09
SPEAKER_07: But like I'm from the Bay Area and like grew up, like I had a lot of family from Petaluma and Santa Rosa and that whole area, Tamales Bay, all that area.
32:16
SPEAKER_07: I grew up there my entire childhood.
32:18
SPEAKER_07: So I think one of the things like we drive around and it would be like a it'd be like me being like, guys, this looks like Northern California, and then we'd be like, okay, great.
32:27
SPEAKER_07: This sliver, this sliver of 30 feet is it was a lot of like what just feels like Northern California, and that's our starting line.
32:34
SPEAKER_07: And then from there, really just going into the story and just trying to be like, how do we make this feel like it has that warmth that Woodburgs Woodsboro has?
32:44
SPEAKER_07: It has that small town vibe, it just you know, like when it sort of feels idyllic in in some ways.
32:49
SPEAKER_06: It feels like it should be totally safe, like you're looking at a you know, Thomas Kincaid painting.
32:54
SPEAKER_07: An idyllic little town where 40 people have been murdered.
33:00
SPEAKER_03: There's so much in the movie speaking of predictions about fan culture, uh in many facets, especially in horror.
33:08
SPEAKER_03: And I'm sure you all have been subjected to involuntary research on that front.
33:15
SPEAKER_03: And so I'm kind of just wondering, um like what your um what your kind of anticipations are for um fans reacting to talking about how fans react to things and what experiences you've had uh with the scream fandom since kind of taking up the torch.
33:37
SPEAKER_05: Definitely anticipating them being vocal.
33:40
SPEAKER_05: Don't know, don't know which way that's gonna go, though.
33:43
SPEAKER_05: Because obviously, I think you know, with the movie, we did take some big swings in terms of like that, what what we've talked about and and and a lot of other things too.
33:51
SPEAKER_05: So um, and and that's kind of what we want, right?
33:54
SPEAKER_05: We want those people to go leave the theater and be animated and debating if it was the right choice or not that we made.
34:02
SPEAKER_05: Um, obviously we stand by our choices, but um, I think that's that's how you know they love something so much, right?
34:08
SPEAKER_05: Is when you when you are able to go in and dissect it and start to visit it after 25 years and have that conversation and have that debate with your friends and and then rewatch the movie again, and maybe you'll feel a different way after you watch it the second time.
34:21
SPEAKER_06: Um, so we should also say that we consider ourselves among that group of fans, right?
34:26
SPEAKER_06: Like for for as much as the movie is about is about that and and like is poking a little fun at it, we consider ourselves part of the group about the shots at anybody, we're not also taking at ourselves, right?
34:39
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, you know, we're not on any like high horse about it.
34:42
SPEAKER_07: This is like we're a part of this, let's talk about it.
34:45
SPEAKER_06: And all that said, the the the fan base has been incredibly, incredibly generous and supportive.
34:52
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I think way more than we ever could have expected.
34:54
SPEAKER_07: Much more than we ever could have expected.
34:55
SPEAKER_06: And I think and I think that that just comes from a genuine love of what Wes and Kevin created and a desire to have more of it.
35:03
SPEAKER_06: They they just want more of that flavor.
35:06
SPEAKER_06: And to get to to get to be a part of that, uh, to to give fans that has been, I mean, just the wildest, wildest dream.
35:15
SPEAKER_03: Wow, that was so exciting, such good insights.
35:21
SPEAKER_03: Did you enjoy it, John?
35:23
SPEAKER_03: What?
35:23
SPEAKER_03: The interview that I had with Radio Silence.
35:26
SPEAKER_03: Yes, the interview was great.
35:28
SPEAKER_03: Did you learn?
35:30
SPEAKER_04: I haven't listened to it yet.
35:33
SPEAKER_04: Wow.
35:34
SPEAKER_03: Not even listening to our own podcast.
35:36
SPEAKER_03: I see how it is.
35:37
SPEAKER_03: I see how it is.
35:39
SPEAKER_03: Okay, well, while I um sign the divorce papers, um, let's see.
35:49
SPEAKER_03: I think that we're actually in a pretty good place.
35:53
SPEAKER_03: I don't want to reveal too much more about the movie because there are things that I think aren't necessarily spoilers, but that the screen movies have been really um purposeful and not including in the marketing.
36:08
SPEAKER_03: And I think that my favorite part of this movie is how surprised I was about Turns event the second the movie started.
36:17
SPEAKER_03: Um there's kind of um uh what do you call it?
36:21
SPEAKER_03: Um, inversions of expectation from the first moments.
36:28
SPEAKER_03: So I would like to uh preserve those surprises for uh our listeners and give a little uh I'll be right back for next week when we come back to uh decode the spoilers of Scream 5, Scream 2022, whatever we're calling it.
36:50
SPEAKER_03: Um so why don't we get to some big scale thoughts and go to some of our classic questions.
36:57
SPEAKER_03: John, on a scary scale, one to five, how would you rank Scream 5?
37:04
SPEAKER_03: And actually, since it's your first time, I'll go ahead and go first with this one.
37:08
SPEAKER_03: Because I know that I said earlier that I think the movie does a really good job of balancing the humor and the horror.
37:17
SPEAKER_03: I am really excited to see this movie again because like I said, like I was like steamed up when I came in, and I felt like I I just I think even if I had just seen a normal showing, I would have felt like this because I have been like honestly, I can't even explain how excited I've been about this.
37:36
SPEAKER_03: And so the entire first viewing of this movie was honestly kind of a blur for me.
37:41
SPEAKER_03: Like, I feel like I blacked out halfway through.
37:44
SPEAKER_03: So I am curious to see how it plays on a second viewing before our next episode we're gonna see it again.
37:52
SPEAKER_03: Um, because I don't think it was very scary, it didn't really scare me.
37:58
SPEAKER_03: I think some of the finale fell a little flat, whereas the first movie, like one time I cried watching the ending of Scream One because I was like, this is really upsetting and sad that these not only do these boys feel this way, but that they've killed all of their friends.
38:16
SPEAKER_03: Um and so I think that it is missing a little bit of that like fear of like this could happen to me.
38:23
SPEAKER_03: Um so I'm going to land I think middle of the road, maybe at a a three, because I do think that there like I I wouldn't tell my mom to watch this movie.
38:35
SPEAKER_03: She'd leave the theater crying.
38:37
SPEAKER_03: But um, for me as a horror fan and a watcher of mini horror movies, I did not feel like I needed to look away, cover my eyes.
38:47
SPEAKER_03: I don't even really remember jumping much.
38:50
SPEAKER_03: What about you?
38:52
SPEAKER_04: I think I would probably a 3.5.
38:58
SPEAKER_04: I was a little more scared than you were during it.
39:02
SPEAKER_04: I definitely found myself gripping the armrest of my seat.
39:08
SPEAKER_04: Wow.
39:08
SPEAKER_04: In the theater while watching it.
39:11
SPEAKER_04: Um and not in the way that older scream movies have scared me.
39:17
SPEAKER_04: This one was very unique in the way the buildup to the kills was a lot different than the older scream movies.
39:27
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there's a lot of tension in this movie versus the classic scream chase scenes that we have grown to love.
39:36
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I do think also that um tension is something that I bring up on this podcast a lot as thing as a thing that a lot of modern horror for me is missing.
39:48
SPEAKER_04: And that's what always gets me.
39:49
SPEAKER_04: It's the tension and the jump scare.
39:52
SPEAKER_04: I guess it's like that.
39:54
SPEAKER_03: Also, that this movie was able to have that tension but still be playful with it.
39:59
SPEAKER_03: There were times where suspense was being built in a way that like as Scream does in its meta textual way, knew what we were expecting and predicted that and subverted our expectation.
40:14
SPEAKER_03: Not just, but even on top of that, was able to subvert our subversion, like our expected subversion of that expectation.
40:22
SPEAKER_03: Like the I feel like there were a lot of layers to the way that this movie predicted what we expected from it.
40:30
SPEAKER_04: Yes, and I I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll get more into it next week, but one very specific scene comes to mind for this, which we can talk about next week.
40:42
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't know what you're talking about, so I'm really excited to hear it.
40:45
SPEAKER_03: Save it for the uh well then my final question is John.
40:51
SPEAKER_03: Would you give Scream 5 2022 new scream a smash or a slash?
41:03
SPEAKER_04: I would smash this bad boy.
41:09
SPEAKER_03: Damn.
41:10
SPEAKER_04: It took me a little bit of time to process it, and I definitely need to see it a second time.
41:16
SPEAKER_04: Um, but yes, overall, my opinion is made, and it is a smash.
41:23
SPEAKER_03: Ooh, well, I'm right alongside you.
41:25
SPEAKER_03: It is smash, smash, smash for me.
41:27
SPEAKER_03: I'm so excited.
41:29
SPEAKER_03: I it has just been like an emotional high since I saw the movie.
41:34
SPEAKER_03: I'm so excited.
41:35
SPEAKER_03: I think it's really wonderful, and like you, I've been processing.
41:39
SPEAKER_04: I keep remembering, like remembering these little nuggets of information from it that just make me love it even more and want to see it again.
41:48
SPEAKER_03: I'm really excited.
41:49
SPEAKER_03: I think that it's a really like uh to get like a little hyperbolic, like movie critic, but like a really triumphant return and like a really impressive um settling into the franchise for these new guys that um, like you said, were wanting to make their mark but also wanting to respect what's been established.
42:12
SPEAKER_04: I mean, I feel like there was a lot of fans out there who were nervous and a lot of people who doubted their ability to continue this franchise, and I think that they've done a great job at it.
42:25
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I was worried too because I love Ready or Not.
42:28
SPEAKER_03: These are the directors, a writer and a such a fun movie.
42:31
SPEAKER_03: A whole team from Ready or Not.
42:33
SPEAKER_03: I agree that's a really good movie, but also I remember when they announced it, I was like, that's really good, but it is not Scream humor, and I'm really worried that Scream 5 is going to be this kind of slapstick thing with people with, you know, cocaine on their noses and l just some of that over-the-top stuff that like is a little bit of a yawn for me.
42:56
SPEAKER_03: And so I was really pleased with the way that they were able to be chamele chameleons, but not totally blended in.
43:04
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was definitely like you could still tell it was their movie, but it was also like a good classic scream scary movie.
43:15
SPEAKER_03: Hell yeah.
43:16
SPEAKER_03: Alright, well, I hope you are absolutely pissing your pants excited for next week.
43:22
SPEAKER_03: When we're gonna break down the spoilers of Scream, and we're also going to have the rest of my spoilerific interview with the radio silence team and my interview with actress Marley Shelton, who plays Sheriff Judy Hicks.
43:38
SPEAKER_03: I'm so excited.
43:40
SPEAKER_03: Um, I cannot wait for that time until then.
43:43
SPEAKER_03: You can find me, Parker Heron, on Instagram, Twitter, or letterboxed if you want to see what I'm watching at Parker Dell Ray.
43:51
SPEAKER_03: John, um, your social media is all private.
43:55
SPEAKER_03: Do you want people to find you?
43:57
SPEAKER_04: Ooh, that sounds like enough.
44:00
SPEAKER_04: No.
44:01
SPEAKER_04: I'm a very private person.
44:02
SPEAKER_04: Also, I never post anything anyway, so if you followed me, it would be pretty boring.
44:07
SPEAKER_03: Alright, well, to all the ghost face killers out there, you've got a job ahead of you.
44:11
SPEAKER_03: So uh John will be seeing you soon.
44:15
SPEAKER_03: And if you want to follow along with what's your favorite scary movie, definitely find us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at ScaryMovie Pod.
44:23
SPEAKER_03: Head on over to Apple Podcasts and Spotify, leave us a rating or review, that would be oh so helpful.
44:30
SPEAKER_03: And until next time, goodbye.
44:33
SPEAKER_03: Goodbye.
