- 0:00Welcome to the libido lounge where we focus on all things love, lust, and libido.
- 0:05We believe that fabulous sex is important to health as exercise and good food.
- 0:19Hey, everybody.
- 0:21Welcome back to another episode on The Lounge.
- 0:23I'm your libido expert, doctor Diane Mueller.
- 0:26And I'm thrilled to be introducing you guys to another dear friend of mine, Callie David.
- 0:32And we're gonna talk about so many great things.
- 0:34I first wanna introduce you.
- 0:36Callie is an amazing holistic somatic therapist.
- 0:39She has a background in family and marriage counseling and is a very dear friend of mine.
- 0:44And we're gonna have a great conversation today about presence and about this concept that in
- 0:50order to feel pleasure, we actually have to be in our body and we have to be present to our
- 0:56surroundings.
- 0:56We have to be present to our feelings.
- 0:58And so many times throughout the day, we find ourselves thinking about something that's not
- 1:03in the moment, worried about something that's not in the moment, and we're not actually in
- 1:07our bodies experiencing pleasure.
- 1:10And and truly, the practice of pleasure is the practice of presence.
- 1:13So thank you for being with me today.
- 1:16I'm gonna I'm really excited for our conversation, Callie.
- 1:20Thank you so much for having me, Diane.
- 1:22This is just such an honor to be here with you today and excited to dive in.
- 1:27It's going to be really juicy.
- 1:29Yeah, it is.
- 1:29Well, let's get right to it.
- 1:31So let's jump into with, you know, with your work on holistic somatic therapy, how do you
- 1:37really define this concept of presence or being inside of one's body?
- 1:42Maybe let's start with that foundation.
- 1:45Yeah.
- 1:45I love that because I get questions that all the time.
- 1:49People are like, what does that actually mean to be in my right body?
- 1:53And it actually means to have slow your pace down enough in life to actually be able to feel
- 2:00the physical sensations in your body.
- 2:02I'm not even talking about processing emotions that can come up when we are actually present
- 2:09and here in the moment.
- 2:10But it really is, like, can I just feel my, like, breath down to my toes?
- 2:16Can I feel my sit bones?
- 2:17Like, that's what it means to actually live a body here live a life here instead of
- 2:23constantly in our head.
- 2:24When we are in our head and we are thinking, we are not in the present moment.
- 2:27Right?
- 2:28We are either in the past or we are in the future.
- 2:31So it's probably pretty obvious to people in listening to that, but let's go a little bit
- 2:35deeper within, like, how do you and your mind connect that to the experience of pleasure to
- 2:42libido to the whole human sexuality process?
- 2:48Love this.
- 2:49So I wanna first break down when I hear the word pleasure.
- 2:52Right?
- 2:53Many people, and I'm sure listeners are thinking, like, pleasure is so associated with
- 2:58release of dopamine and serotonin and oxytocin, and it must feel gooey and yummy and
- 3:05delightful.
- 3:05Right?
- 3:06That's how, like, society talks about what pleasure is.
- 3:10But pleasure can also be found in those moments of feeling angst and despair and sadness and
- 3:17frustration.
- 3:19And that's where I really actually love this conversation is when we can open it up beyond
- 3:24just this idea of it feeling really juicy and yummy, that we can actually find pleasure, we
- 3:30can find opening pathways when we just allow what is actually wanting to come through in the
- 3:36present moment and not rejecting it.
- 3:38So the second that we break free break free from that paradigm is when we can actually
- 3:42allow the emotions to come through in the present.
- 3:45And then when my heart is breaking or, like, my stomach is angsty, I can breathe into that.
- 3:51Right?
- 3:51I can get out of my head.
- 3:53I can feel the sensations, and that actually becomes pleasurable.
- 3:57And that's when I feel like we become, like, inner alchemist of our experiences.
- 4:02Like, it actually allows those sensations to move through quicker.
- 4:06I love that.
- 4:07And when when you're talking, it's really bringing me back, and I'll let our audience
- 4:10know that that you and I met in central dance class.
- 4:13And, you know, that's what we were doing, right, in our sensual dance classes was really
- 4:17bringing in our anger, our frustration, our grief, our sadness, our joy, our laughter,
- 4:23like, any emotion, and then feeling how it felt to be in our pleasure body experiencing that
- 4:30emotion.
- 4:30So I know this is a really new concept for people.
- 4:34So do you have any thoughts before we get into more techniques and how people do this?
- 4:38Do you like how how does the the mental mind really balance this whole thing?
- 4:45Because it it's almost like paradoxical, right, around, like, wait, I can feel anger and
- 4:49pleasure at the same time.
- 4:50I can feel grief and pleasure at the same time.
- 4:53So how does how does the mind really then
- 4:56start to understand that and and manage what
- 4:56seems so paradoxical in old ways, right, with neuroplasticity.
- 5:08It's gonna wanna connect old patterns.
- 5:10Old ways, right, with neuroplasticity.
- 5:12It's gonna wanna connect old patterns.
- 5:14So it's first just allowing it to actually all be okay.
- 5:18And we're not trying to actually cut off the mind or the ego here.
- 5:23So when you are actually trying to make this connection, it's just being aware of the mind's
- 5:28thoughts, the mind's chatter, the mind's trying to make this right or wrong, and just letting
- 5:33that actually be there.
- 5:35The more that we allow the mind, the thoughts, all that to be there, we simply come back to
- 5:41present so much quicker.
- 5:43Right?
- 5:44A lot of practices I see talk about, like, keeping yourself coming back from present or
- 5:49coming back from the past or the future.
- 5:51And sometimes that can almost create shame, right, of, like, you can't experience pleasure
- 5:56there.
- 5:57Just realize when you're not there, and your body's natural alignment will be to come back
- 6:02to present.
- 6:03Does that make sense?
- 6:06Yeah.
- 6:07Absolutely.
- 6:07Absolutely.
- 6:08What's actually even coming up for me some right in this moment is one of the things I'll
- 6:12talk about sometimes, especially in in group work, is asking women in particular, because I
- 6:18think this is more of a tendency with women during, intercourse or sexual play for the mind
- 6:25to wander.
- 6:25So I'll ask women, like, how many of you guys have ever found yourself doing the grocery list
- 6:30during sex?
- 6:31Right?
- 6:31Or, like, the my like, what am I on, you know, the next day?
- 6:34And it's really it's really common.
- 6:37And I think what you're talking about there around, like, oh, the mind wanders, like, bring
- 6:42it back to pleasure is, like, that also we can we can take into our sex life.
- 6:47Right?
- 6:48We can take into our intimate life.
- 6:49We can take into our couple life, our our personal play in order to just enjoy that
- 6:55moment.
- 6:55And if our mind wanders in that moment, bringing it back.
- 6:58So it's essentially like a form of meditation.
- 7:00Right?
- 7:01It really is.
- 7:03And I love how you frame that.
- 7:04I was actually just this morning in my own just practice of feeling my body, feeling what was
- 7:09present.
- 7:10Right?
- 7:10This is my own, like, my pleasure practice doesn't have to look a certain way.
- 7:14It doesn't have to necessarily mean, like, masturbating or in love with your partner.
- 7:18Right?
- 7:18It could be in the own presence of your own bed, own space, slowing it down.
- 7:24And I realized I was like, oh, I kinda like being in my head.
- 7:28Like, oh, I like distracting myself.
- 7:30Oh, I like keeping myself from my body.
- 7:33And just in that, when I took the shame away and I kinda made it a little kinky of, like,
- 7:38oh, you're kind of into that, I dropped into my body.
- 7:41It was like I was near where it was at.
- 7:43I've like because it was wanting, you know, with everything going on in society today and
- 7:48culturally and politically, it was wanting to get caught up in everything.
- 7:51And I was like, oh, you're just, like, stuck in your head today, aren't you?
- 7:55And I swear, just meeting it there with a little bit of kink and a little bit of play
- 8:01brought me right back into my body.
- 8:03And I've been able to heal that.
- 8:06Yeah.
- 8:07You're giving me
- 8:07chills when you say that.
- 8:09Right?
- 8:09Because I think there's so much juiciness there and, like, just like that self shame that
- 8:13really gets in the way of us experiencing pleasure and just like like, like, finding,
- 8:18like you said, like, the kink in it and finding that, oh, I look at you.
- 8:21You're being bad.
- 8:21Do you like to be in your head right now?
- 8:23Like, it's really it's really playful and it's really, compassionate and it really helps to
- 8:29drop that shame.
- 8:30So, you know, from the standpoint then of, like, more tools and exercises, and I know you
- 8:35do so much in your work.
- 8:36I've been since we've been friends, I've, like, been following every email you write.
- 8:40So I track you closely on all the the great offerings that that you're doing in the world.
- 8:46And so with your work, what are you seeing around pleasure, around getting back in one's
- 8:51body, around being present as, like, techniques and tools and starting places for people?
- 8:58Yeah.
- 8:58So as far as starting places and I would say, actually, no matter where you are in your
- 9:03journey, let's simplify all of this.
- 9:06And when we really start coming back to presence, like, just like you introduced
- 9:10earlier.
- 9:11Right?
- 9:11We we can't incorporate pleasure if we don't come back to present.
- 9:16So I love incorporating the senses, and that's really sensual for me.
- 9:21Right?
- 9:21We we just even break down senses.
- 9:24I love coming back to sensory experiences to get myself into the present moment.
- 9:29That not only allows the present moment, but it allows my body to start awakening to what's
- 9:35around me.
- 9:36And so when it comes to practices, it really is coming back to basics.
- 9:41First, safety.
- 9:42That's always gonna be really big.
- 9:44Notice where you are.
- 9:45Find a space where you do feel safe, whether it's in nature or your home.
- 9:49Notice the doors, the walls.
- 9:51Right?
- 9:51You're just already starting to awaken your senses through what you see.
- 9:56And then if you do feel safe enough, closing your eyes and starting to hear the sounds and
- 10:01not just connecting through the mind of, like, I hear the birds, but how does that sound
- 10:08whisper and almost tickle your system?
- 10:10So then you bring it in a little bit more.
- 10:12How does the sound of the AC?
- 10:14Is it kind of frustrating me?
- 10:15Well, what does the frustration feel like in your body?
- 10:18So you're really just taking it's a grounded sensory approach to bringing your awareness
- 10:24from the external to the internal, all while staying connected to your breath.
- 10:29So our breath is gonna be and I teach breath work day in and day out, and this is, like, the
- 10:34core to everything.
- 10:35Right?
- 10:35It's like, if you aren't breathing, you're not allowing your body to soak in all this whole
- 10:41experience.
- 10:43So really bringing it down into, like, your sacral, your lower belly, feeling that
- 10:49expansion of life in you and letting it out.
- 10:51So it's just a fun it's a somatic exercise and exploration, of really allowing yourself to
- 10:57come back to what is without forcing anything.
- 11:02It's such an important distinction.
- 11:03I feel like you're making the, like, the listening to the sound versus because that's I
- 11:08feel like that's talked about a lot.
- 11:10Right?
- 11:10But it's a very, very different layer to add on that.
- 11:14Well, what is that what's truly happening in my body in relationship to that?
- 11:19That's such a, like, deeper layer of tuning in.
- 11:22So I really love that.
- 11:23And then I'm I'm also curious around what you see from a standpoint of libido, of play, of
- 11:30pleasure.
- 11:31Like, where does that come in?
- 11:32Like, is it do you see this as, like, something that oftentimes when we're talking about breath
- 11:37work and, pleasure exercise or presence exercises, I should say?
- 11:41Do you see this as things that people are doing, like, both outside of the bedroom, just
- 11:46kind of in their daily life to really work on their pleasure?
- 11:49But then do you also see, like, hey, where like like, is there space to come together and and
- 11:54say do these types of present pleasure types of activities within the tie or the context of a
- 12:00more intimate moment?
- 12:02Yes.
- 12:03Yes to both.
- 12:04Yes.
- 12:04So what you cultivate in your own practice is how you're gonna show up with your partner.
- 12:12And if you are struggling with, like, low libido, it really is, like, the simplicity of
- 12:18it, taking the shame out of it.
- 12:19It's this life force that actually is wanting to come through you.
- 12:24And right?
- 12:24And we create so much of our libido, our eros, our life energy, and our sacral.
- 12:30And so I definitely recommend couples in their own practices to start bringing breath,
- 12:37awareness, aliveness into their own practice.
- 12:40Right?
- 12:40And when it comes to practices, at the end, I'll offer something, but, really, it could
- 12:45just be as simple as in your own morning practices, really grounding down, feeling your
- 12:51life force, feeling any tension where you don't feel life force.
- 12:55Right?
- 12:56There's some also activating pranayama breath that we can increase too.
- 13:01But then my favorite is then coming together when you are in the bedroom with your partner,
- 13:06not even actually in intercourse, but before intercourses, there's some really get on the
- 13:11exercises that if we have time, I can or if this is a good time, I can kinda go into and
- 13:16explain some of that as well.
- 13:19Yeah.
- 13:19Let's do that.
- 13:19I think that sounds like a great place to go.
- 13:22I'll be quick on this, but, so eye gazing.
- 13:28And if that makes your whole body just clench, perfect.
- 13:31That's your medicine.
- 13:35Just slowing the system down enough to be able to meet your partner eye to eye.
- 13:41And so to get really logistical with this, I love saying the left eye.
- 13:46I love having you know, you and I could even practice right now.
- 13:48Just point to your left eye.
- 13:50Right?
- 13:51And because normally, it looks like the right from your partner, and then you put the down.
- 13:56And then just for, like, a few minutes, you really just gaze into your partner's eyes
- 14:02without leaving your body.
- 14:04Right?
- 14:04Because when we talk about presence, presence isn't merging with someone else.
- 14:09It's actually staying back.
- 14:11It's leaning back, and it's wondering what is coming up for me as I'm meeting in union my
- 14:17partner, as I'm as I'm becoming present, as I'm cultivating this energy with them, what's
- 14:23happening in my body.
- 14:24I think a lot of times we talk about, like, merging with your partner and feeling their
- 14:28energy and no.
- 14:29No.
- 14:30No.
- 14:30A lot of this practice is actually, what do I feel?
- 14:34How can I be present in my own body as I meet them?
- 14:37So eye gazing really big and then, you know, just for, like, a couple moments, a couple
- 14:42minutes to start out with.
- 14:44Notice the fear.
- 14:45Notice the giggles.
- 14:46All of it is perfect.
- 14:48And then to even deepen it would be consensual touch, not leading to foreplay, but one on one
- 14:55to one really moving then to once the breath is synced.
- 14:59Right?
- 14:59Once you eye gaze, the breath naturally syncs with each other, and then it would be just like
- 15:05a touch on someone's back or touch on your partner's leg.
- 15:10And just notice right there, how do I feel with my partner's touch feeling me?
- 15:15And then you can get really playful with this.
- 15:17You can eventually lead up to more eroticism, kind of teasing, playing with that energy flow.
- 15:22You will literally feel the eros and the libido, like, increasing through your system
- 15:28before anything happens.
- 15:30So, anyway, that was just a little bit of a lot of tools, but I'm always here to dive in more
- 15:34with all of them.
- 15:35Oh, it's this is so great because I know so many people.
- 15:39Like, one of the things that comes up a lot for me and people I talk to and and work with is
- 15:45this concept of maybe being in a long term relationship.
- 15:48Right?
- 15:48And, like, forgetting how to flirt, not having intimacy in a long time and it feels, like,
- 15:54awkward to, like, dive right in and wanting to add more foreplay.
- 15:58Because even though you're saying, like, okay, well, we're not doing erotic touch, like, even
- 16:01the eye gazing to me is still, like, kind of a form of foreplay.
- 16:05Right?
- 16:05Because we're still connecting.
- 16:07Right?
- 16:07There's still, in some ways, when we're holding our energy back, when we're, you know,
- 16:10connecting like that, to me, it's, like, actually very erotic because it's kind of that
- 16:14tease of, like, I see you.
- 16:16I'm here.
- 16:17But I'm still way I'm still in my body.
- 16:19So it's, like, almost as, like, there's a a tease I feel in that as well.
- 16:23So I think there's, like, so many opportunities to even use practices like this as ways for
- 16:29couples that may have been out of the practice with being intimate and close in a while, like,
- 16:34for a while as a way of starting to reconnect in a way that feels gentle and safe and not
- 16:40rushing it and just allowing their their energies to match, like you're talking about,
- 16:45and to communicate and to touch each other, without losing oneself.
- 16:49So I absolutely love all of that.
- 16:52And I'm wondering if we should go into now into now our, breath work practice that we're gonna
- 16:59do for everybody and that we're gonna that you wanted to lead.
- 17:02Before we do that, just in case people are driving and, like, can't do this and have to
- 17:07get off the, you know, the call here before we do this this explorative exercise, I wanna make
- 17:12sure that everybody knows how, to get a hold of you and that you have a free it's a free breath
- 17:18work exercise that you're giving away.
- 17:20Is that right?
- 17:22Yeah.
- 17:23So, it would be an honor to offer it to y'all, and it's just a just like what we talked about.
- 17:28It's a breath, but also a somatic practice to really keep you in your body and just be aware
- 17:35of what's happening in the present moment.
- 17:37You could practice this by yourself or you can bring this into your practice with your
- 17:42partner.
- 17:43Both of y'all lying down together, both of y'all getting curious.
- 17:46It's an amazing time just to kind of come back together in union, in presence, in slowness.
- 17:52And the best way to get to, contact me would either be through Instagram, underscore Cali
- 17:59David or my website, www.CaliDavid.com.
- 18:03And we'll, of course, have all of that information and your freebie in there.
- 18:07And I know we talked offline offline about a amazing group program you have coming up called
- 18:12Beloved, and that people will have information in the show notes of how to get a hold of that
- 18:17as well.
- 18:18So amazing.
- 18:20Well, let's go into our experiential portion of today.
- 18:24How do we wanna begin?
- 18:26So this will just be about two to three minutes.
- 18:29But when you want to practice it, you can, you know, of course, make it a little longer.
- 18:33But first, finding a comfy place, making sure you're not driving, get cozy, take that nice
- 18:41big breath in.
- 18:43On the exhale, let it
- 18:44all out.
- 18:47Begin to slowly close your eyes or lower your gaze.
- 18:54Feeling your sit bones underneath you, your back against the chair or on the bed, hearing
- 19:08any sounds around you.
- 19:14Starting to bring your awareness in a little bit closer into your body, and really breathing
- 19:23in through the nose and having your belly expand on that inhale nice and slow and exhale
- 19:33through your nose.
- 19:36Nice and slow.
- 19:39And so with each breath, imagine that you're bringing and breathing in warmth, softness,
- 19:47comfort, and just feel that filling up your body.
- 19:53And on that exhale, just letting any tension go.
- 20:00And then one last little practice in today will be actually needing any tension.
- 20:06So if you have somewhere in your body, maybe it's your neck or your stomach where you're
- 20:10feeling tension, just breathe in right there.
- 20:13Breathe in warmth and love.
- 20:17Breathe into that sensation, and then let it all out.
- 20:23Just notice how the gentle act of presence can sometimes even soften this tension.
- 20:32And if you want to, after this practice, you can come back and just stay curious around it.
- 20:36You can ask some questions.
- 20:40Whenever you're ready, we'll just take one last big breath in.
- 20:44Fill up your body with joy, with love, with openness.
- 20:49And on that exhale, you'll open your eyes and just shoot that energy out beyond your field.
- 20:58And coming back to the here and the now.
- 21:04So that was Two
- 21:04minutes go so fast.
- 21:07It was so wonderful.
- 21:09And I I wanna make sure to, give a personal testimony too about your work because I
- 21:14remember the first time that we were, that you led me through breath work in dance class, and
- 21:20we are out in our teacher's backyard laying down in her on her grass.
- 21:25And this exercise that you took me through, like, the closest thing that I can explain it
- 21:29to is that, like, a cervical, like, divine type of orgasm where there's, like, this connection
- 21:36to something divine, right, something beyond us.
- 21:39And it was just so incredible.
- 21:42And that was, like, the moment I, like, totally fell in love with you around, like, this woman
- 21:45is a goddess.
- 21:46She's amazing.
- 21:47She's got this figured out.
- 21:48So I'd hope everybody got a lot out of our whole our whole time together out of that
- 21:53exercise.
- 21:54And I really do encourage everybody go check out your work because it's truly just a such a
- 21:59gift to the world.
- 22:00So thanks for being here with me today, Cali.
- 22:03Thank you so much for having me.
- 22:05The joy and the love for you just never ends.
- 22:08I feel like it grows and grows.
- 22:09So thank you for having me.
- 22:11Thank you for everyone for listening, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions or
- 22:16wanna dive into the GCBRAD offering.
- 22:20Perfect.
- 22:20And then just as a reminder, everybody, we are coming close to our end of 2024 year here.
