- 0:00Oh, hi, it's. Crystal here, just coming to at
- 0:04the top of the episode with a couple bits of business.
- 0:08Firstly, this episode is about four days late.
- 0:12I'm sorry, to be honest with you.
- 0:14I was busy drinking margaritas in Puerto Vallarta, which isn't
- 0:19a good excuse, but it is an excuse.
- 0:23It also explains why I sound like I've been dragged through a
- 0:27Bush. Please.
- 0:28Please Gaze, they're trying to murder me.
- 0:31Hope the spiders were worth it mom, they were second bit of
- 0:37business. This episode is actually our
- 0:39first ever Gatreon episode, which we are unlocking today for
- 0:44the main feed. So if you are a Gatreon
- 0:47subscriber and you've already heard this episode, I'm very
- 0:51sorry that you're not getting any new content this week.
- 0:54But please enjoy the warm, smug feeling of letting Baby and I
- 1:00take a couple weeks off from recording.
- 1:02Thanks Syphilis, and for letting me specifically spend some time
- 1:06taking thirst traps in a pool. There's not going to be a.
- 1:09Swimming pool, you stupid. Slut your support makes that
- 1:14happen and we appreciate it so much but we do have a packed
- 1:18recording schedule, so lots of fresh camp classics for the main
- 1:21feed and the Gatreon are on the way and the final bit of
- 1:25business. This episode was recorded in
- 1:28person and as I said, it was one of our very first episodes, so
- 1:32the audio quality isn't always amazing.
- 1:35There's some reverb issues, and it doesn't have the editing
- 1:39flair of more recent episodes. I mean, flair is doing a lot of
- 1:44heavy lifting there. But anyway, let's consider it a
- 1:47time capsule. But I think much like the craft,
- 1:52if you look close enough, I think you'll find there's
- 1:54something very interesting happening.
- 1:58Anyway, enjoy this episode. Thanks as always so much for
- 2:02being here. And just remember, we are the
- 2:06weirdos. Mr. You right now.
- 2:08You right now. You binding me is very true,
- 2:11actually. I feel like God, you're a bit
- 2:12Sarah and I'm a bit Nancy potentially.
- 2:15Get away from her, you bitch. Classic.
- 2:20He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders
- 2:24right before she died. No.
- 2:28Hannah, you. Thought you become a prostitute,
- 2:32you're a dog at it. I still love.
- 2:34Doggy chow. I love doggy chat too.
- 2:38Oh, hi, I'm Crystal, and I'm your dad's most regrettable wet
- 2:42dream. That's right, baby.
- 2:45Lame here. And welcome to Camp Classics.
- 2:49Camp Classics. Classics.
- 2:51Classics. Classics.
- 2:52Yeah, Sorry. I just.
- 2:54I feel like it needs a bit more judge.
- 2:55Oh, right. You're working on a theme of
- 2:57workshopping it as we're doing. I think that's perfect as is,
- 2:59actually. We should just use that.
- 3:01It's OK. Screen.
- 3:02Grab. Screen grab it.
- 3:03Yeah. Record, print, send to radio,
- 3:06print. Print those vinyls now press
- 3:09them now. Limited edition.
- 3:11Welcome to Camp Classics, A thoughtful podcast about stupid
- 3:15movies. Every two weeks, we'll be here
- 3:18discussing, exploring and rating some of the all time greats in
- 3:22the genre of camp. This is the Gatreon.
- 3:25So you've unlocked a bonus episode.
- 3:28Oh, yeah. This is the deep dive, baby.
- 3:31Yeah, you're right in there. You're behind the curtain.
- 3:35Oh, fluffy seconds. I don't know what I'm saying.
- 3:38Beef curtains. Yeah, behind the beef curtains.
- 3:41Do you have a movie you'd like us to cover?
- 3:43Well, you can follow us on Instagram at Camp Classics
- 3:45podcast and send us a message with your suggestions.
- 3:48We will please tell you to fuck off if it's a shit suggestion,
- 3:53though. Yeah.
- 3:54I mean, but all suggestions welcome.
- 3:55OK. Sorry.
- 3:56Yeah, we've got to encourage growth at the moment.
- 3:58Sorry. Yeah.
- 4:02And here we are. This this is our first Patreon
- 4:06episode and we're covering the craft.
- 4:09This has got you written all over at this film.
- 4:11I do actually love this movie. But before we get into it, what
- 4:13makes a CAMP movie? Well, it's one of those things,
- 4:15isn't it? I think there has been a lot of
- 4:18academia that's been said about this and a lot of very, very
- 4:22intelligent people that have written about what CAMP is.
- 4:25I think we should just ignore that and what CAMP means to us.
- 4:29I think CAMP is something that unlocks queer joy.
- 4:32I think it needs to have a legacy within pop culture.
- 4:36I think it needs to be a bit shit, a bit stupid, underdog
- 4:39flop vibes, something a bit off and ultimately just completely
- 4:44stupid. Great.
- 4:46Well, I think that our our movie this week tick some of those
- 4:49boxes for sure. Let's get into it.
- 4:51What? What's your history with this
- 4:52movie? Well, if you didn't know, this
- 4:55film is nearly 30 years old. Wow, that's depressing.
- 5:00Yeah. I mean, obviously, I think I was
- 5:02maybe 2 when it was released. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:05A bit younger, but yeah, so nearly 30 years old, which is
- 5:08really, really depressing. But actually this film was not
- 5:11really rated by anybody that was working on it.
- 5:13It was like a surprise hit. So it had a box office global
- 5:17gross of 56.6 million on a $15 million budget.
- 5:21So it actually did really, really well.
- 5:24And Theresa herself, the main lady, she just thought it was
- 5:27like had no gravitas at all as a movie.
- 5:29So, so it was one of those ones that, yeah, it was sort of a bit
- 5:33of a sleeper hit and sort of came out of nowhere.
- 5:34I think maybe because it's it was in such a different light to
- 5:38all of the other kind of ROM com schoolgirl films at the time.
- 5:43It was it had some real edge to it, didn't it?
- 5:45So But yeah, I've got a bit of a quiz.
- 5:47Oh, OK, Let's love a quiz. Love a quiz.
- 5:50So apparently 85 actresses screen tested for the role of
- 5:56the the four witches. Some big names there.
- 5:59And I just wondered if you can like maybe some guesses as who
- 6:02might have been up for it. We're 96.
- 6:04So who's an adult that can still play a teenager?
- 6:09Drew Barrymore. No, but that's a great shout.
- 6:12I will say something as well, just to help you, that you think
- 6:15people are teenagers playing this role.
- 6:18The four witches in the actual movie, none of them were
- 6:20teenagers. Oh, yeah.
- 6:21No. Yeah.
- 6:22Rochelle was nearly 30. Oh, wow.
- 6:24Yeah. So it's literally just.
- 6:25It doesn't matter. It could be anybody.
- 6:27Meryl Streep could have been up for The Rock.
- 6:29Drew Barrymore's a no. Any more suggestions?
- 6:33Alicia Silverstone, correct. She did, but she literally had
- 6:37just finished filming Clueless and it hadn't been released at
- 6:40the time. So she was just an unknown and
- 6:42that people didn't know that she was the mega star.
- 6:44She was about to, well, I say mega star.
- 6:47She had like a very short period of time where she was the IT
- 6:50girl, right? And then it all kind of it went
- 6:52a bit Melissa Joan Hartford, didn't it?
- 6:54It did, sadly, Yeah, it did. Anymore suggestions?
- 6:57She's just on TikTok eating random berries that she founds
- 6:59that are poisonous. Was that what she does?
- 7:01Yeah. Haven't you seen that video?
- 7:03There's a video of her. She's just like, guys, I just
- 7:06ate these berries I found in this person's backyard.
- 7:09My mouth is a bit numb. Do you think they're poisonous?
- 7:11And then silence. And she disappears for two days.
- 7:13And everyone's like, yeah, those were definitely poisonous.
- 7:16She's fine. Is she, like, stalking in
- 7:19people's back gardens? I don't know what she's doing.
- 7:21I don't know if she just wanted some attention.
- 7:22She's like, this will be funny. I don't know if she's got
- 7:25something to promote coming up, but it.
- 7:27It was great. No, no, I've got another guest.
- 7:31Sarah and Michelle Gellar. No, but I think that's a great
- 7:35shout. Do you know who else I think
- 7:37might have been good for this? Selma Blair.
- 7:38I was just going to say Selma Blair.
- 7:39Yeah. She's not one of them, though.
- 7:41And the the Reese Witherspoon. No, but again, a great shout.
- 7:46Yeah. So I feel like in this era, this
- 7:48person was auditioning for every single movie.
- 7:50I'm not getting them. Angelina Jolie was up for it.
- 7:53Oh, girl. Interrupted vibes.
- 7:56Right. She hasn't had her break yet.
- 7:58I don't think Girl interrupted has happened.
- 8:00Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:01And then why not? 12 year old Scarlett Johansson
- 8:04also went for the role. Sure.
- 8:08Stardom Young. Yeah, exactly.
- 8:10But that's the Scarlett Johansson all over, isn't it?
- 8:11It's like, not right for the role, but she's going to go for
- 8:14it. Yes.
- 8:14That's not going to stop her. You need a Japanese Cyborg lady.
- 8:20I'll do it. Are you a fan of Scar Jo?
- 8:23I don't mind her. OK, Yeah, but we'll maybe talk
- 8:25about her in another episode. But yeah, I'm not.
- 8:27I'm not sure. I'm on the fence with her.
- 8:29Yeah, I guess she's never particularly captured my
- 8:32imagination. But yeah.
- 8:35Topic for another day. Big, huge topic that will take
- 8:39up most of this podcast is obviously wigs and Robin Tony's
- 8:43wigs. Do you know why she was wearing
- 8:46Sedwig? I did see this fact.
- 8:48It's because she had just filmed Empire Records and her she was
- 8:53shaved bald. And apparently the costume
- 8:55designers all loved the kind of idea that she had a little Pixie
- 8:58cut. But no, though they insisted,
- 9:01would have made more sense for an angsty teenage girl.
- 9:05Not like the Big 90's, the blowout.
- 9:10It's also like, you watch the first half the movie, you're
- 9:13like, there's something really off about this wig.
- 9:15And then she does the glamour to turn her blonde and you're like,
- 9:17wow, that really looks like a bad wig.
- 9:21And then for the rest of the movie, it just really feels
- 9:22incredibly wiggy. Totally.
- 9:24And also, I get that like the practical effect of making it
- 9:28blonde. They could have like just then
- 9:30cut to her with a blonde wiggle on instead of that like weird
- 9:33painted yellow. It will get into it.
- 9:37So yeah, that was exactly the reason she was in another movie.
- 9:40She I don't even think she wanted to do the role,
- 9:42apparently. I think she was a bit anti being
- 9:44like, well, you can see that in her performance, can't you?
- 9:48Valid, So valid. She doesn't want to be there,
- 9:50doesn't she? OK, next question.
- 9:53Lots of slippery serpents feature in this movie.
- 9:56How many do you think? Oh, I was wondering that
- 9:59watching it, how many of those were real?
- 10:03I think a lot of them looked really real.
- 10:05I'm going to say 100. Well, there are numbers across
- 10:08the Internet are varying. I've gone direct to the director
- 10:12for what he says and he might be sort of making up a bit, but he
- 10:15said 10,000 snakes were used in the filming.
- 10:19Wow, that is so gross. It's so gross.
- 10:22Also the way she was trudging all over them.
- 10:25I was like, these snakes are not being looked after.
- 10:27I hate snakes. Yeah, but those snakes did not
- 10:30come home safe. No, definitely not.
- 10:32Like, we'll just fill a toilet with snakes.
- 10:36Some of them will drown. It'll be fine.
- 10:38Oh Low got the shot like and apparently the cockroaches were
- 10:43specially bred so that they couldn't reproduce if they if
- 10:45they escape. Wow, that's a cool fact.
- 10:50I know like well done on that research.
- 10:53I mean, I haven't triple checked my sources.
- 10:56It's just like fighting. When you find a fact like that,
- 10:58you don't need to know anymore. Keep it.
- 11:01Just happy to hang on to it. OK, next question.
- 11:04Last one. And so obviously major looks are
- 11:06served in this movie, but what band did the director want the
- 11:11four actresses to feel like they were in?
- 11:17Don't get in the black hearts. No, but good shout.
- 11:21Heart again, good shout. Incorrect.
- 11:28I don't know. Mötley Crüe.
- 11:30What did Mötley Crüe look like? I don't know.
- 11:32That's for straight people. I know we've got that, such a
- 11:35straight hole because I'm like, I don't know what any of these
- 11:37look like with a cure. The cure, Sure.
- 11:39Yeah. I mean, it's this hyper golf.
- 11:41Yeah, great. I mean, they really went for
- 11:44that, didn't they? It wasn't like it like, oh,
- 11:47Hollywood does golf. It's like Nancy is, she's beat.
- 11:50She's got that. Her makeup sensational.
- 11:54But there we go. So that's my little roundup.
- 11:56I love that we really learned something there.
- 11:59What was the kind of reaction to this?
- 12:02I feel like, what were the reviews like?
- 12:04So I don't think it got any razzies or anything to do.
- 12:06Yeah. What was the reaction?
- 12:07I think the the the critical reaction at the time was pretty
- 12:11poor. Roger Ebert gave it two out of
- 12:13five. But I mean, what does that man
- 12:14know? Yeah, exactly.
- 12:16I did actually check Google reviews, though, for some, for
- 12:19some reviews. Yeah.
- 12:19Yeah. Great, that's what I've always
- 12:22appreciated about you is it's like you you're all about what
- 12:24what real people think, I think and I I just think you know, a
- 12:28lot of these kind of reviewers are egotistical idiots that get
- 12:31paid a lot of money. I think this is where we're
- 12:33going to get some really good feedback right.
- 12:35So Cody says was good, but the story was OK could be better.
- 12:40But love that they were witches and stuff.
- 12:42Love that shop. Want to go there to be honest.
- 12:43Anyways, overall a good movie, 4 out of five.
- 12:48Thanks, Cody. I love it.
- 12:50It's insightful. Yeah, Hunter says This place was
- 12:54probably the worst bar I've ever attended.
- 12:56Servers were extremely rude and professional.
- 12:58Do not recommend one out of five.
- 13:00I think Hunter was at a craft beer place and got confused.
- 13:02Oh yes. And left a review on movie The
- 13:04craft. Oh, that's a shame, isn't it?
- 13:06It's like. But it's tarnished the legacy of
- 13:08the crowd. And that one out of five is
- 13:10never getting unscrubbed from the movie.
- 13:13And then Livin says demons are not hiding anymore and is near.
- 13:17Beware people. Praise the Lord.
- 13:18One out of five. OK, Yeah.
- 13:22So basically I think reviews are mixed.
- 13:30So I guess it's up to us then to decide if this is the camp
- 13:34classic. Yeah, it could be.
- 13:36So what's it about? Well, I've got a summary here.
- 13:39Of course you have. So have we gone to AI to rely on
- 13:42this to take some of the workload off of us, of you?
- 13:45I have. And I asked it to do it spooky,
- 13:47but I don't think it's achieved anything.
- 13:49Could you make to help the AI? Could you maybe do it in a
- 13:52slightly spooky voice? Sure.
- 13:53OK, great. Sarah Bailey, a troubled teen
- 13:59with strange powers, moves to LA and gets pulled into a trio of
- 14:04outcast girls rumored to be witches.
- 14:09Bonnie. Scarred from an accident.
- 14:12Rochelle, the target of racist bullies and Nancy living with
- 14:17her abusive stepdad. They worship a deity called
- 14:22Menon and think Sarah's the missing piece to make them
- 14:29powerful. I only need to step it up,
- 14:34doesn't it? Let's be real, this isn't very
- 14:36spooky. After Sarah's humiliated by jock
- 14:41Chris, the girls cast spells for love, revenge, beauty, and
- 14:47power. The spells work.
- 14:49Chris becomes obsessed with Sarah, Bonnie's scars vanish,
- 14:53Rochelle's bully loses her hair, and Nancy kills her stepdad.
- 15:01Scoring a high rise Apartment chat TPT really went for scoring
- 15:09a high rise apart? Sure, drunk on power, Nancy
- 15:14takes things too far. Ignoring the warnings not to
- 15:18invoke Manol, Nancy gains God like powers and goes off the
- 15:22rails, killing Chris after he tries to assault Sarah.
- 15:27I mean rape. Yeah.
- 15:30I mean, yeah, let's not dodge that.
- 15:33When Sarah tries to stop her with a binding spell, the coven
- 15:36turns on her, tormenting her with nightmarish visions and
- 15:40trying to drive her to suicide. But Sarah fights back, invoking
- 15:45Manol herself, and shows Bonnie and Rochelle terrifying visions
- 15:49of their worst fears. Sarah binds Nancy's powers, and
- 15:55Bonnie and Rochelle, now powerless, try to make amends,
- 15:58but Sarah shuts them down and shows she's still got her magic.
- 16:03Nancy, she's strapped to a bed in a psych ward, raving about
- 16:09flying. I mean, factually correct.
- 16:12Yeah. Well done.
- 16:13That was really you. You elevated the work, the text
- 16:16there. That's really what I do.
- 16:19Right. So that's the movie.
- 16:21Where should we start? What do we like about this
- 16:23movie? Well, witchiness.
- 16:25Witchiness. Yeah.
- 16:28Full stop. Witchiness.
- 16:30I like that we got a call back to the witches of Eastwick very
- 16:32early on. The Chris calls them the bitches
- 16:35of Eastwick. And you're just already like,
- 16:37oh, I'm in safe territory. I'm getting references to them.
- 16:41I'm happy to. I'm always happy to spend be
- 16:43spending time with witches. Yeah, always.
- 16:45Yeah. It's it's it's a safe place for
- 16:47all of us, isn't it? They took the witchiness
- 16:49seriously in this in this film, because they had a real witch,
- 16:54Pat Dixon. Pat Dixon is not a rich name.
- 16:59I'm sorry, but yeah, Pat Dixon was there to do the spell.
- 17:05Pat is such your mum's friend Pat, who lives in
- 17:11Gloucestershire. And imagine, imagine, we've got
- 17:14Pat, guys. So yeah, Pat was there to make
- 17:19it all. Well, and apparently the girls,
- 17:21when they all got cast, all were given like witchy swag bags with
- 17:25like, candles and books and stuff in it.
- 17:27And then there are rumours as well that Theresa was actually a
- 17:31practicing Wiccan, Pagan person. Anyway, Pagan person, clearly.
- 17:36I don't know what I'm talking about, but apparently she was
- 17:38already into it. OK, cool.
- 17:39So there's like an authenticity to the witchiness as well, which
- 17:41I appreciate. Yeah.
- 17:43Although manual, manual. Manual invented, right?
- 17:46Invented. Yeah.
- 17:47Which is interesting because I think I was telling you about
- 17:49this. There's a big new K pop
- 17:52international girl group. It's been on a reality show
- 17:55called Cat's Eye and the main girl, like the IT girl of the
- 17:59group who basically Can't Sing or dance as well, but it's
- 18:02really hot. It's called bang on.
- 18:04And so I was just like, is she inherently she's she's invoked
- 18:09to spirit and called the corners and and that was in Cat's Eye.
- 18:13Yeah, and it would make she's not really hot.
- 18:15She's just cast a glamour. Yeah, I mean, that's let's talk
- 18:18the spells. Did you rate the spells that
- 18:20they did, the powers that they did as witches?
- 18:23Absolutely. I mean, this movie had me in a
- 18:25chokehold, I would say, as a teen.
- 18:28Yeah. Talk to me.
- 18:28So where were we at as you watching this film for the first
- 18:32time? I don't.
- 18:33I don't remember. I remember seeing it as a teen,
- 18:35and I was the kind of sad little gay boy that was desperate to
- 18:39develop supernatural powers. And I would wish for it.
- 18:43I would pray for it. I mean, I spent most of my
- 18:45childhood, like in that, in a fantasy land, imagining I had
- 18:48super powers or witchcraft powers.
- 18:50So this movie was right up my street.
- 18:52And it made me feel like you. It was possible 'cause it, it
- 18:58was played seriously. Yeah.
- 19:02So yeah, this movie definitely had a huge impact on me in that
- 19:07regard. But it's every little gay boy's
- 19:09dream, isn't it? To get powers and get revenge
- 19:11on, on the, on the bullies of the school and show everyone
- 19:14you're actually cool and powerful and in charge.
- 19:17And it's just like a classic gay revenge fantasy.
- 19:21Totally. And I, I remember people like
- 19:23particularly doing like the levitating thing and like it
- 19:26really encouraged people to kind of round school to be like a bit
- 19:30witchier. I think like the biggest thing
- 19:32for me, though, was I I haven't seen this film for quite a long
- 19:35time and I've I've obviously got this like memory of like loving
- 19:38it and obviously of Nancy and being obsessed.
- 19:41I was surprised at how sad and how dark I found like the
- 19:46opening of it. And actually it was way less
- 19:49like kind of throw away than I thought, like actually going
- 19:52through like really horrible shit.
- 19:54Like, you know, the characters are all it's they're all kind of
- 19:57like nasty situations and they and they they don't they
- 20:00actually, you know, I mean, the script is probably not the best
- 20:03written script in the world, but like I felt like the apps is
- 20:06playing it all quite like dedicated.
- 20:08I couldn't. I couldn't agree more, I think.
- 20:11It's taken this place in like cultural history where it's kind
- 20:15of been Mean Girls a fight and it's been kind of watered down
- 20:19what we think of it. And I was prepared to watch it
- 20:21and think it was really cheesy and a bit kind of Hun witches.
- 20:28But no, the subject matter is serious.
- 20:31They don't shy away from like tough topics.
- 20:34The fact that that hero is like, struggling with suicidal
- 20:39thoughts is like, I think quite a rare concept in a teen movie.
- 20:44Yeah. And to kind of like, even in
- 20:46some of those like, revenge moments where it's like Nancy's
- 20:49fighting back and you've got that fight and it's like, cut
- 20:52your wrists again. It's like, these aren't like
- 20:54jokesy kind of things. It's interesting actually,
- 20:58because I was reading the character Rochelle and
- 21:00originally was Caucasian. Oh, Kelsey Prize there.
- 21:05But apparently her her thing was originally that she was bulimic.
- 21:09And it wasn't until they cast the actor playing them that they
- 21:12decided actually bringing in the race thing would be a more
- 21:14interesting spin. So it's it's it was hard themes
- 21:19all throughout. Yeah.
- 21:20I wanted to talk about the racism actually.
- 21:21I mean, how do we feel about that?
- 21:24It almost felt that was the one kind of problem that felt a
- 21:27little bit cartoony. I don't know.
- 21:30It's they kind of handle racism in that way that you're like,
- 21:35this is racism and it is bad. But actually, I think we've
- 21:39learned in the year 2024 that like, it would probably show up
- 21:43much more in microaggressions rather than over in that way.
- 21:48I don't know, maybe, maybe that's how racism was in the 90s
- 21:52and I just don't remember that. But yeah, it's it feels like
- 21:56it's not given that much attention in the film.
- 22:00It doesn't feel like that's a priority story like and I feel
- 22:03like her character as a whole it she just doesn't they've not
- 22:08really given the chance for that character to really breathe.
- 22:12And I think I kind of found that, but both of those
- 22:15characters need can the Bonnie character as well.
- 22:18You're kind of getting some juicy stuff and then it's sort
- 22:21of they supposed to sort of just thrown away near the end and
- 22:24they're just kind of and I guess it's fine that they're revealed
- 22:26to be quite like vacuous and hanger on E, but I don't know.
- 22:29I thought there was, like, way more meat that could have been
- 22:32conducted with them and like, yeah, just a bit more of a sense
- 22:36of, like, rage from both of them about what they've both been
- 22:39through. But I was more upset, if I'm
- 22:42going to be honest, about Marsha, Marsha, Marsha Marsha,
- 22:48like, the absolute amazing character from The Brady Bunch,
- 22:51basically playing, like, in a different universe.
- 22:55The evil version of what her character really is like.
- 22:58If you took Marsha out, that's basically what she was.
- 23:00And I love Marsha. And then so to hear her just
- 23:02being like the most fucking repulsive human being in the
- 23:06world, with a better wig, might I add, than I've actually never
- 23:11seen the Brady Bunch. You've never seen the Brady.
- 23:13Oh my God. It's all about Brady Bunch too.
- 23:15A very Brady sequel. I feel like I'm going to insist
- 23:18that we do that one. But yeah.
- 23:19But literally the character of Marsha is vain, upper self mean,
- 23:25but she does it with like a kind of a deluded smile about her,
- 23:28which she just is really adorable.
- 23:30So to see her presented in the hard light of reality of just
- 23:33being a racist, that was hard for me.
- 23:35But also I'm like, boohoo me. It is satisfying watching her
- 23:40lose her hair. Yeah.
- 23:41Yeah. It really is, isn't it?
- 23:43It's like it's yeah. Again, just that ultimate
- 23:45revenge fantasy of like, I'm going to show my bullies.
- 23:52I think as well. Like something I really liked
- 23:53about it was how it did go against like teen tropes in
- 23:56horror and sort of teen films. So like, although men are like
- 24:00still there as jocks and stuff and presented, they're really
- 24:03throw away nasty characters. And I just think I I love the
- 24:08kind of the edge of what it of what sisterhood is and the way
- 24:11that they kind of have these relationships.
- 24:13They're just like, to me, Nancy is like a friend you want, she's
- 24:18ride or die. She's got like a passion for her
- 24:21friends. And it's kind of like, I kind of
- 24:24find it weird that she's the one that's getting vilified because
- 24:27she's she's the one that is like when, you know, there were so
- 24:31many scenes where like, Bonnie's like, sad about her scars on her
- 24:34back. And you can kind of see like
- 24:37Nancy, like emoting and crying and really feeling for her.
- 24:40And I truly believe that maybe I'm like a bit too much of A
- 24:44deep dive and that's it. I think she's the friend that
- 24:46you want. Fuck.
- 24:47Bloody Sarah. Yeah.
- 24:49Well, we can get on to Sarah. But yeah, I agree about Nancy.
- 24:52I think she, I mean, the performance is insane.
- 24:57It is so great. And also.
- 25:00But where is she coming from as well, Dorothy?
- 25:03And it's. Oh my God, of course.
- 25:04Yeah. Wizard Oz two.
- 25:06Yeah, little Dorothy. And I love, I love even that.
- 25:09I love. You know, you had Judy Garland.
- 25:11That was like fucked up and like kind of smoking, drinking on
- 25:15drugs, doing that. And then you've got like Fruisa
- 25:17that brought like an edge to that character.
- 25:19But I love that she sort of developed into they said and it
- 25:23it just is a great. I think she's so captivating in
- 25:26this role. I think she's it's she gives
- 25:28such an intense performance and it should feel like it could
- 25:33have really easily felt cheesy or stupid or over the top or
- 25:39silly, but somehow it doesn't. She's just really, really great.
- 25:43Why do you think that is? Because I fully agree with you.
- 25:45I don't know. I think she takes like big risks
- 25:48and it I don't know, because there's so much thrown at the
- 25:53wall. It like you kind of don't ever
- 25:55stop and look at one particular moment that hard.
- 25:58I don't know. She even has like quite cheesy
- 26:01lines She pulls off like I love it when she like says I love a
- 26:06woman in uniform and she's and you know, we are the weirdos,
- 26:09Mr. and I just, she can just say them with like a credibility
- 26:14that I'm like, is it she's hot? Is that, is that what it is?
- 26:18But she's not like conventionally hot like she is.
- 26:23But she's it's not like you've got like a Megan Fox doing that
- 26:27fair, because you could imagine Megan Fox doing that, but being
- 26:30the palatable version. Yeah.
- 26:31Yeah. The physicality she brings,
- 26:34especially in that fight scene at the end and when she's
- 26:37strapped to the bed at the end, that's like really impressive.
- 26:42Like the when when she's like fighting with the the clothes
- 26:46and when they're both pinned to the wall, it's she's going so
- 26:50hard. Like, imagine being in the room
- 26:53with her when she's acting that you'd be scared.
- 26:55Yeah, yeah. It's, it's real.
- 26:57And it's probably because she's a real witch.
- 27:00Yeah, probably. She will say I love her
- 27:03witching. This continues.
- 27:04There was an occult bookshop in LA.
- 27:07It was she went to to do research while she was doing the
- 27:10film and it was closing down and was going to get turned into a
- 27:12Chinese restaurant. So she bought it and she ran it
- 27:15for several years after. Wow.
- 27:20Dedicated to the 'cause wow, that's so cool.
- 27:24Oh, that makes me really love her.
- 27:27I watched Almost Famous for the first time recently and she's in
- 27:29that and her character is so different and I think, I think I
- 27:34hadn't really seen her in much. So I wondered, you know, maybe
- 27:37that's just the intensity she brings in to every role.
- 27:40But I think she's just a really talented actress.
- 27:42Probably. I felt like as well, something I
- 27:44would have liked to see more in the film is she's invoked the
- 27:48spirit, right? So she's obsessed with that.
- 27:50She's drunk off of it. And I kind of felt like I wanted
- 27:54to see more rage from her. Like I felt like what actually,
- 27:58she didn't really do that much with the spirit.
- 28:00I mean, if I had the devil in me and that kind of power, I'd be
- 28:03taking some bigger swings and just like torturing my
- 28:06girlfriend that doesn't want to be a witch anymore.
- 28:08But I kind of wanted to see like revenge on the school.
- 28:10Do you know what I mean? And like all of the people and
- 28:13again, maybe that's like the gay boy and me, but I wanted to see
- 28:18her like RIP, RIP apart the world a bit more that she'd been
- 28:21put in. That's cool.
- 28:23That would like Dark Willow season, Buffy season 6.
- 28:29Does that mean anything to you? I'm just not sure.
- 28:31Just nothing. But Willow goes evil and then
- 28:33she's like tries to destroy the world basically.
- 28:36It's very that because, and it's like, and it's just great to
- 28:39kind of have that in a film where, yeah, well, you're you're
- 28:43watching the people and you're understanding why they're taking
- 28:46revenge. And it's like you're it's not
- 28:48kind of getting too much. I don't personally don't think,
- 28:52Wow. Even killing Chris I don't think
- 28:54is too much. Oh, it was so frustrating that
- 29:00he dies and then Sarah's like, I think he was a good guy
- 29:04underneath. Yeah.
- 29:06I mean, I guess there's some ambiguity about that rape scene,
- 29:12about whether or not that happened because of her spell.
- 29:16But he's not a good person before that.
- 29:18Yeah. I mean, it's not a huge
- 29:20character leap from what he's been presenting about.
- 29:22And, you know, and like the relationship that's implied with
- 29:25like that Nancy's, you know, well, it's not implied.
- 29:28She's sort of said we we had some great times.
- 29:30He gave her an STD and then sort of completely slut shown to her.
- 29:35I mean, I've seen. Yeah, there were great
- 29:38candidates in the film. Felt sorry for the the sort of
- 29:41snaky homeless guy, though. Yeah.
- 29:44And again with him. And also.
- 29:45But why was that? Why did we see that sort of
- 29:47grotesque like him under the vehicle?
- 29:50Really grim. But yet Chris gets a shot away
- 29:53and just they're like, oh, no, he's out the window.
- 29:54I wanted to see him crushed on the floor.
- 29:56But apparently there was something to do with the
- 29:59ratings. They were desperate that it was
- 30:00like APGI see film. So maybe they had to like, back
- 30:04off on some of that violence. I mean, I don't think Chris
- 30:07deserved death outside the context of a horror film in in
- 30:11the context of a horror film, like definitely kill that man.
- 30:14Yeah, I do. I do agree.
- 30:18Like, I wish Nancy had. I don't know.
- 30:21But then there's, for example, that scene when they're driving
- 30:25her fancy car and they're just going through the the red
- 30:28lights. I love how tense that is.
- 30:31And it's, it's just a minor thing, but it's like really
- 30:33gives you a sense of like what's happening to her character and
- 30:37like how she's out of control. It's, I don't know.
- 30:40It's very unsettling in a way that like a big she's floating
- 30:45above the school and tearing it to pieces.
- 30:47Like would have maybe felt a little bit heavy-handed.
- 30:49And maybe that is actually just a smart thing for like what
- 30:51teenagers are going through. You know, when you're a
- 30:53teenager, like your world does tend to be a lot smaller,
- 30:56doesn't it? And it's like the the things
- 30:57that impact you are quite minor in the longer scheme of things.
- 31:02So maybe it is actually smart that they're using all of this
- 31:05sorcery just to kind of fix their sort of initial worlds
- 31:10rather than thinking bigger. But yeah, I thought I thought
- 31:14witchiness was just brilliant all over.
- 31:17I hated the witch woman. The shop woman hated her.
- 31:23Yeah. What did I say about her?
- 31:25She I said she's very Ophelia Powers code CR Catwoman episode,
- 31:31just like drippy foreign lady in a long tunic dress changing
- 31:37accents like one minute Spanish, next minute's French.
- 31:39Yeah. Also, I kind of blame her for
- 31:42this whole thing happening because if she was a little bit
- 31:44more responsible with the books that she's handing out left,
- 31:47right and centre, it's like, I want to invoke a spirit.
- 31:51Well, you need to be an experienced witch to do that,
- 31:54$25 to invoke a spirit. Yeah.
- 31:57Put that book behind that curtain.
- 32:00Yeah. And then you did go behind the
- 32:02curtain. And it was like the dark room.
- 32:03And it was all like dayglow. And she done a lovely thing
- 32:05there. Well, place of power.
- 32:07Nothing. Nothing says place of power like
- 32:09a glory hole behind a bookshop. And she said that Sarah is a
- 32:15natural wit. I mean, from the get go, she's
- 32:18just quite annoying, isn't she, Sarah, I have a lot of notes.
- 32:23Let's. Let's dive in.
- 32:24Yeah. Robin.
- 32:24Tony, it's like, obviously there was a choice being made, but the
- 32:29choice reads like she does not want to be in this movie.
- 32:32She's annoyed to be there. Everything she says and does is
- 32:35incredibly disaffected, which I guess is like teen angst vibes.
- 32:40But I don't know, it's her character.
- 32:43Doesn't really make sense to me. I don't get it.
- 32:46We're we're told that she's suicidal.
- 32:51We don't really know why the wig, I guess it might be the
- 32:54wig. It might be the wig.
- 32:59And I guess maybe that's why she's choosing to play
- 33:01everything quite. Oh, oh, I don't know.
- 33:08I call upon the guardians of the watch terrors of the know.
- 33:12I know she takes all of the joy out of it.
- 33:14Sounds like I kind of enjoy like Nancy doing it.
- 33:16I'm like, yeah, you do. And then she just she's like,
- 33:19it's like she's over intellectualizing what she's
- 33:21doing. I guess it's not easy to play
- 33:25like the straight man, the the like average person, which is I
- 33:30guess what her standing is. She's the she's the audience,
- 33:33right? We're supposed to relate to her.
- 33:37And then you've got in contrast, first, about completely chewing
- 33:42the scenery in every scene that she's in.
- 33:45I don't know, there was a real mismatch there.
- 33:46I don't know what Sarah could have done to like bring more
- 33:50into that character. But as it was, it just seemed
- 33:53like she really didn't want to be there.
- 33:54And I guess as well it was good that she wasn't this like light
- 33:57and fluffy pretty girl that just kind of was being made to be a
- 34:00bad girl. You know, there was no like
- 34:01makeover other than the glam of the hair.
- 34:03Like she didn't change who she was to fit in with the group.
- 34:07If anything, she sort of was authentic to herself.
- 34:10But, you know, who fucking cares?
- 34:13Do you know who I did love? Shout out to Nancy's mum, by the
- 34:15way. Loved her absolutely.
- 34:18Very. Regina George's mum coded.
- 34:20Totally. Yeah.
- 34:21She was living her best life. Absolutely.
- 34:23In that little that little two piece at the end.
- 34:26You guys, you girls want a drink?
- 34:28I loved it. Again, the subtlety of Nancy
- 34:30miming the shotgun behind her, that she.
- 34:33I just loved all of the details of that.
- 34:36And sorry, so back to Sarah. So I hate her so much, I don't
- 34:38even want to talk. Yeah.
- 34:39I mean, I think it's fair, basically.
- 34:41Why'd you do it like that, girl? Let's start with the wig.
- 34:45So her dad hates her as well because literally the first
- 34:47thing he says to her when he drops her off in the car is you
- 34:50Look, you look amazing. Look beautiful.
- 34:54Oh, I actually really, I really appreciated that scene.
- 34:58I was like, wow, that's his he he's a nice supportive dad,
- 35:01isn't he? But you're right.
- 35:04He should not have like he's like, honey, she don't want to
- 35:06stay home for a few more days and maybe reconsider that wig
- 35:09before you go to school. I've got a fun fact for you.
- 35:13So the wig designer hairstylist of this is actually quite a big
- 35:18deal. At the time, her name was
- 35:21Beatrice. She's not dead.
- 35:23Beatrice Day Alba. And she was also responsible for
- 35:28Brendan Fraser's wig in The Mummy.
- 35:31I don't know if you remember that, but it was kind of like a
- 35:33little slinky curtains vibe. Also very wiggy, very awful.
- 35:39So she Brendan Fraser, I guess in my head, that was his hair.
- 35:43No like baby, no baby, no, no, no baby.
- 35:50So she did that. But I think we need to be
- 35:52careful with what we say about her big work because a year ago
- 35:56she shot and injured someone for trespassing on her house
- 36:00property. So she's got a girl and she's
- 36:02not afraid to use it. I see.
- 36:04And and that was someone coming to criticize her work in 1996 is
- 36:08the craft. Absolutely.
- 36:09So she's got a target on you, bitch, and she's going to get
- 36:12you. But I just thought that was a
- 36:14fun little fact about that. I mean, that's that's fucking
- 36:17grim. America.
- 36:21Yes. In terms of campness, Right.
- 36:22Yeah. I wasn't getting a lot of camp.
- 36:26No, I mean Nancy's giving us an over the top performance which
- 36:32veers into camp sometimes. There's something camp about
- 36:37Robin Tiny not wanting to be in the movie that she's in.
- 36:40There's something, there's a little bit of the sprinkles of
- 36:43camp there. I mean Nancy's mum very camp.
- 36:46True. The the Magic Store owner also
- 36:50very camp in a different way. I also felt like she was trying
- 36:54to less off with Sarah. Yeah, it was.
- 36:56I was getting very like you're you're going to snog in a
- 36:59minute. We did also have a cameo from
- 37:03the dead lady in Desperate Housewives as the doctor.
- 37:06I didn't clock that. Yeah.
- 37:08What's her name in Desperate Housewives?
- 37:09Mary. I didn't clock that.
- 37:12The one who shoots herself in the first episode.
- 37:14Yeah. I can't remember what her name
- 37:15was. Anyway, she's the doctor.
- 37:17That that. I mean, Neve Campbell getting
- 37:20her scars taken off. That's camp, I think.
- 37:24I think it's Campy. I thought it was like campy when
- 37:28it was like, it was like a real afterfall.
- 37:31It was like, now we're going to, I'm going to show you what you
- 37:34really are. And it was like, oh, there's
- 37:37Neve Campbell and there's Rochelle.
- 37:39She's got a bit of scar rage on her face and Michelle's got like
- 37:43all patches. That just felt like a real quick
- 37:45throw away. It wasn't like I felt like the
- 37:48camp really sort of escalated when they were trying to get
- 37:52Sarah, though. I felt like that's when it
- 37:53really kicked in. Flying through the window.
- 37:56Yeah. Proper witchy vibe.
- 37:58I also really enjoyed how like the house suddenly felt like I
- 38:01was watching an episode of I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.
- 38:04It was like very anti deck survival challenge.
- 38:07There are cockroaches coming out of the toilets.
- 38:09Oh my God, I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of it.
- 38:12I was. I was enjoying that vibe a bit
- 38:14as well. But yeah, I kind of, I just
- 38:18wanted a little bit more magic on her.
- 38:23Yeah. And I think that the ending is a
- 38:26little disappointing. Like, the fight scene starts
- 38:29pretty strong, I think. I think when they're, like,
- 38:31flying through the air, blah, blah, blah.
- 38:33And like, she's invisible in the pile of clothes, that's all
- 38:35quite fun. But then it just ends with her
- 38:37getting kicked into a mirror and then a wipe to, like, mirror
- 38:41falling. Like, they didn't really know
- 38:43how to finish that up. It felt like she was too
- 38:45powerful to be just kicked into a mirror.
- 38:47And that's the end. And also yeah, like go go
- 38:50weirder with it. Like we've we've seen that we
- 38:52know that Sarah's mum is was died in childbirth having her
- 38:57and was also another witch like glamour and become the mum or
- 39:00yeah or like channel your mum's energy in.
- 39:04Yes, yeah, there there. There was definitely something
- 39:07missing and it and the effects also look pretty crap sometimes
- 39:11whenever it was practical effects.
- 39:13I think it looked really cool and great when you can tell
- 39:16there were 10,000 snakes, for example.
- 39:18But like when Nancy sees her hand as snakes, you're like,
- 39:21God, that looks bad. I also don't think she care.
- 39:24Yeah, great. She's like great.
- 39:25It makes me even weirder, spookier.
- 39:29I love the kind of like 90s editing of it all, you know,
- 39:32like it's like a like a Nirvana video, something just like that
- 39:35kind of flashy. Speaking of.
- 39:38Well, one thing. And also this is camp.
- 39:40I think this is the first slow motion high school walk because
- 39:46the only the next one I can think of is Jawbreaker and
- 39:48that's 9798. And when is that 99 maybe?
- 39:54And then obviously you've got Mean Girls and clearly this
- 39:57hasn't happened. Clearly this hasn't happened.
- 39:59That's a great point. I mean that earns a lot of
- 40:01points. I mean like what a walk it is.
- 40:03They look incredible. Everybody's nips are out camp
- 40:11also like I guess what is really camp is like.
- 40:14Yeah, and I could, I could relate to this if I had powers
- 40:17is kind of seducing someone, pretending to be someone else to
- 40:20get revenge on them. That that's incredible.
- 40:22Fully something that I fantasized about as a as a
- 40:25teenage boy, Like, oh, well, I'll just turn myself into a hot
- 40:28person and then I'll have sex. Yeah, exactly.
- 40:31Yeah. But that, I mean, that was
- 40:34perfect, that that bit and then and then you kill him.
- 40:36And that's what I would have done as well.
- 40:38I think the other thing that is camp as well is we're talking a
- 40:41lot about the Nancy performance, but that is a character that has
- 40:45lasted as sort of, you know, people perform as her.
- 40:49She's a Halloween look, you if you think of a witch in a film,
- 40:53I think she's up there with your other ones like your who you are
- 40:57the top witches in films. Oh, who are my favorite witches?
- 41:01I don't know. I guess witches of Easterick had
- 41:03a big impact on me. I mean, they're all very hot in
- 41:06that movie and it's another movie about like sisterhood and
- 41:11taking down a man, which is quite fun.
- 41:13Probably should be on our list, that movie, to be honest.
- 41:16Jessica Lange in American Horror Story.
- 41:17Kevin, she's giving like evil head bitch and then the witches.
- 41:26Oh, of course, her name is Angelica Houston.
- 41:29Angelica Houston. Not Anne Hathaway.
- 41:31Not Anne Hathaway. I haven't seen that version.
- 41:33Angelica Houston as as the grand high witch.
- 41:36Incredible sensational. I'm going to throw one more at
- 41:39you. The Blair Witch.
- 41:41The Blair Witch. She's camp.
- 41:42Love her. She's camp.
- 41:43We don't really know what she don't know much about her.
- 41:46No, but she's she's Yeah. She's got the good.
- 41:49She's very witchy. She's Yeah, she likes.
- 41:52She's hungry. She's very hungry.
- 41:54I only saw that for the first time quite recently.
- 41:56Oh, really? Yeah.
- 41:57Scary. It is scary.
- 41:58Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:59And I think that that's something about like this film
- 42:02as well. Like, again, I thought it was
- 42:03going to seem really, really dated and for some reason it
- 42:06didn't. Obviously there were some like,
- 42:08CGI effects that are a bit off, but it didn't feel dated to me.
- 42:13And I think the characters and this what those girls are going
- 42:17through about, nothing's really moved on.
- 42:21Totally. Yeah.
- 42:22Like, the teen girls struggle has not gotten any better.
- 42:26The themes make so much sense today.
- 42:29Still as much sense. But yeah, I think even just like
- 42:31the quality of the filmmaking didn't feel bad.
- 42:36It's like it's a solid movie that's well made, reasonably
- 42:40well written, well acted for the most part.
- 42:45Like, yeah, there's some cheesy bits, magic store owner, for
- 42:49example. But like if you're if you're on
- 42:51board for a magical story like you, you could find a lot worse
- 42:55versions of that 100. And another big swing that I
- 42:58thought was really interesting was obviously, like, at the time
- 43:01this was made, AIDS was such a huge thing and it was such a
- 43:05huge issue that was, you know, being villainized by press and
- 43:10everything like that. And I think it was interesting
- 43:12how they did the blood scene where they shared blood.
- 43:15And apparently that caused quite a lot of uproar.
- 43:17And I just think, again, it didn't need to happen, but I
- 43:21just think it's like an interesting, lots of decisions
- 43:24about this film I don't think needed to happen.
- 43:26I don't think they were always the easy options, but I just
- 43:29think there was a bit more, a bit more thought put into things
- 43:32and just a bit less obvious, which I appreciate.
- 43:35Like the dead sharks. Yeah.
- 43:37That's another good example of like, this is an odd choice.
- 43:40Why did you go for that? Again, It's cool and it's iconic
- 43:43and it's memorable. And again, but her relationship
- 43:46with it wasn't like, yeah, everything that's dying, It's
- 43:48like, these things are beautiful.
- 43:50This is a gift. It wasn't just this, like,
- 43:53throwaway moment. Yeah, I thought that was good.
- 43:55I mean, there's clearly, I don't know what was in that wine they
- 43:58were drinking, but they were tripping out.
- 44:00What, what would your spell be? My spell would would basically
- 44:07be what Sarah's did. I just want people to fall in
- 44:10love with me, to be hot and popular, which is really boring.
- 44:14I guess they were all too young to go for eternal youth, but
- 44:17that's probably where I'd land now.
- 44:22They don't know. They don't know what's coming
- 44:24down the pipes. Oh, God, the characters of
- 44:30Bonnie and Rochelle, like they have pretty reasonable dreams,
- 44:34wishes, spells. They just, you know, want an end
- 44:38to their suffering. I mean, same with Nancy as well,
- 44:41But obviously Nancy then starts killing people.
- 44:44It's kind of odd that then they get punished for that totally
- 44:48because. And the bit where it's like
- 44:49Bonnie, oh, you've turned into such a narcissist.
- 44:52What? Because she spent all of her
- 44:54life being ashamed of her body and that like having no power in
- 44:57her beauty, even though she's stunning.
- 44:59Obviously she's got she just can't see that.
- 45:02And it's that's the thing that's holding her back.
- 45:04And she suddenly starts enjoying it.
- 45:05Oh, and gets a bit confident with it and suddenly has an
- 45:08opinion. We're meant to dislike her for
- 45:10that. Yeah, it's kind of it's not.
- 45:13It's not really fleshed out enough, is it?
- 45:15And also and like Michelle has real when she sees what's
- 45:19happening totally. If we if we're supposed to
- 45:21believe those two characters have also gone a bit evil or
- 45:24being swayed, Let's see them like let's see Rochelle like
- 45:28enjoying her suffering. Yeah, let's see taking it too.
- 45:33Yeah, let's see Bonnie like going evil with her narcissism,
- 45:38like let's see that a bit. And then it kind of makes sense
- 45:41that the way it ends. But as it is, they're just like
- 45:452 damaged girls who suddenly turned murderous.
- 45:48It's kind of confusing. It's a bit.
- 45:50I also as well, like Marsha Brady, she could have just gone
- 45:54to Sarah and gone. Where did you get your wig from?
- 45:58I mean, that much of a problem, was it?
- 46:02I mean, maybe she maybe she hated the wig as well and was
- 46:05like, do you know what? I'm all right.
- 46:06Yeah, I'd rather have just chunks of hair falling out.
- 46:11But yeah, they're punishment at the end.
- 46:13But then and then they just became, they came, became a bit
- 46:16wet at the end as well. Then they when they went to
- 46:18Sarah and they're like, oh, do you want to hang out?
- 46:21And she's the one And the tree fell.
- 46:22It's like you're better off not with her.
- 46:26Apparently there was a deleted scene where Sarah goes to see
- 46:28Nancy in her cell and is trying to heal her there.
- 46:33So they were trying to sort of impose that there was a
- 46:35friendship and a sisterhood still there, but they just
- 46:38decided to live. I mean it's very the thing that
- 46:40people used to do, leave someone on a in a crazy self going
- 46:43mentor. I felt sorry for Nancy because
- 46:45she wasn't actually mental. No.
- 46:47She had invoked the spirit. Yeah.
- 46:49She was flying. Yeah.
- 46:50It's like fair play. Yeah.
- 46:52Get her out. Yeah.
- 46:53Let her out of there. Let her fly.
- 46:57I just realised that the movie starts with her flying.
- 47:01She's in a plane. And then, but it ends with Nancy
- 47:06saying I'm flying, I'm flying. If that was on purpose.
- 47:09Yeah, Look at you getting those extra details.
- 47:13That's called mirroring. OK, well, what's the campus
- 47:21moment? I think campus moment in this
- 47:24film. I think Nancy holds a lot of
- 47:27camp moments and is the main camp force.
- 47:30I think it's that crazy book, book woman.
- 47:33I don't know what she did afterwards, but she should never
- 47:38work in films ever again. She was that bad.
- 47:42I think my campus moment might be, can you hear that?
- 47:48There's something in my walls? Yeah.
- 47:52That is so interesting because, like, did you know, like, which
- 47:54things happened on set as well? So when they did the four
- 47:57corners, there's something scratching on the inside of
- 48:00Crystal's wall right now. I think we're about to get a
- 48:03cockroach invasion through. I think it's happening and this
- 48:06is what happened in the film. When they did the four corners,
- 48:09the beach guard said there was it would be fine.
- 48:11It would be, you know, it was easy weather to shoot on.
- 48:13And as they did it, a huge wave came up and like wiped out the
- 48:17entire set. Wow and.
- 48:19Another thing, apparently a white owl followed them all
- 48:23around filming. There was always a White House
- 48:25somewhere. Wow.
- 48:27I mean, maybe they're saying this to generate a little bit of
- 48:29extra spooky publicity, but there is an owl that's going to
- 48:32pop out of your chimney any second and jump on my face.
- 48:36I bind you, Crystal. From doing me or you Eddie Harm.
- 48:41Thank you. I bind you, Crystal.
- 48:45Yeah. What we're saying.
- 48:46Campus moment. Oh, yeah.
- 48:48It's got to be the hair turning blonde glamour.
- 48:52I mean, that's something that a scene that has stuck with me
- 48:55from the first time I watched it.
- 48:57It's so stupid. I love her little giggle as
- 49:00well. When she shakes her hair out.
- 49:01She's blonde. And now she's like, yeah,
- 49:04because who wouldn't? It's all about the glamming,
- 49:06isn't it? That's the best bit because,
- 49:08yeah, I love it when old Nancy gives a go on Chris and it
- 49:12literally gets rejected. And then it's like, I would be
- 49:15Sarah. Yeah, It's.
- 49:17It would be so much better if we could all just glam ourselves
- 49:20out of situations in life. I think.
- 49:22Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 49:24OK, Well, should we rate this? Yeah.
- 49:26On our official rating scale? Yes, Which I'm warming to now.
- 49:31Yeah. We're going to plot it on on the
- 49:33graph. We need to decide on Merrill's.
- 49:38How good is this as a film? It's definitely not a disaster.
- 49:42Definitely not a disaster. I think within its genre is a
- 49:46very well made film and I think that's probably the best way to
- 49:48see it because obviously comparing it to something that's
- 49:51been Oscar worthy, it's never going to be that.
- 49:53But in terms of like a teen witchy film, it stood the test
- 49:58of time. Cinematography is great.
- 50:01I think the acting is really good.
- 50:03I think the script's a bit shit, but overall I'm going to say 7.
- 50:07I think you're going to say A7, I think I'm going to say A7.
- 50:11Yeah, I think that's fair. That's where I was going to
- 50:12land, too. So we agree. 7 Merrills.
- 50:15Yeah, go. For it, yeah, it's, as you say,
- 50:18it's a totally solid movie. There's some problems, but for
- 50:22what it is, I think it's almost entirely successful at what it's
- 50:26trying to do. And I really expected it to look
- 50:28and feel old. I'm so with you.
- 50:31I was expecting it to be one of those ones that I just had like
- 50:35an abduration 4 years ago and it's shit.
- 50:37And if anything, I felt, I felt like, oh, I feel really touched
- 50:41by the situations they're going from.
- 50:44And I found it way more like interesting than I I thought I
- 50:48would. Yes, totally agree.
- 50:51What about camp? How many lizers?
- 50:54I mean, it's not an all out camp fest, is it?
- 50:56But I'm going to give this, I'm going to give it a 5.
- 51:00It's a 5 for me. When it's camp, it's really
- 51:02fucking camp. But I just think the tone just
- 51:05isn't there. It's too serious for me to be
- 51:07camp. We're fully aligned.
- 51:08I was also thinking 5 on five Lizers.
- 51:11Oh my God. So we agree, 7 Merrill's, five
- 51:14Lizers. It's a strong, it's a strong
- 51:16score for a film. Great score.
- 51:19I mean, frankly, if if you're scoring much higher than A5,
- 51:22it's quite hard to keep the quality good.
- 51:24Yes, it means probably something's gone very wrong with
- 51:28your movie. So 5 is basically as high as you
- 51:31ever really want to aim to be making if you're trying to make
- 51:34a good movie. Exactly.
- 51:36And also I there's one more quote from Nancy I would like to
- 51:39just mention. I just love the line.
- 51:40Get your lousy ass up the stairs or I'll slit your throat.
- 51:43Wow, great. And with that, yeah, get your
- 51:47lousy asses to the next episode or we'll slit your throat.
- 51:50Wow, that's so nice. Well, I've been Crystal and I've
- 51:55been baby lame. Please follow us on Instagram at
- 51:59Camp Classics podcast and we'll be back on the Patreon soon with
- 52:02another bonus episode. Yeah.
- 52:04And let us know what you think about this film.
- 52:06Like, are we completely wrong? Do you think that Sarah's wig
- 52:10was is actually, is she that girl in that wig?
- 52:13Are you feeling that 90s blowout?
- 52:15Let us know in the comments what you think about this episode.
- 52:18If we've got it wrong, if you think it's camp, if you think
- 52:21it's a masterpiece. We always want to to hear your
- 52:23feedback because we're not experts.
- 52:27Thank you so much, See you soon. Get away from her, you bitch.
- 52:33Classic. He was in the Amazon with my mom
- 52:37when she was researching spiders right before she died.
- 52:40No, Hannah, you thought you become a prostitute or a drug at
- 52:47it. I still love doggy chow.
- 52:51I used to love doggy chows too.
