Latest / Cage Match: A Roundabout Way of Meeting Nicolas Cage / The Wicker Man vs Wild at Heart
Transcript
- 0:00What you are listening to is real. The participants are not actors. They are real people with a case pending in Podcast Court.
- 0:10Hello, I'm Producer Peter and welcome back to Cage Match, a roundabout way of meeting Nicolas Cage, Podcast Court.
- 0:17Today we'll hear arguments for a deadbeat dad with a true love of personal freedom and a cop with no authority who wants to know how to get burned.
- 0:26Oh, God.
- 0:29Oh, my God.
- 0:37I mean, I'm surprised after two years of this, more than two years, that outside of the time your house got broken into, we've never lost an episode due to just poor recording like practices.
- 1:02Yeah, that's true, which is kind of amazing. I mean, we so we lost that one. We've never missed a release, which is also kind of wild because we absolutely should have some good stats.
- 1:14Yeah. I mean, you've been doing this for fucking forever. Have you? How are your stats?
- 1:19All right. They're not too bad. The only I think the only time we've had a bit of a blunder is me and Petros did a sort of a Patreon first thoughts episode on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
- 1:34And then the second we finished recording Petros immediately accidentally deleted his half of the recording. So we had to do it again.
- 1:40I bet the jokes about it the second time.
- 1:43I hope so.
- 1:45Did you record the whole thing again or did you just play back your end and let him react?
- 1:51Yeah, live reactions by all accounts. I made him grovel, but we recorded the whole thing again.
- 1:58Oh, that's a nice idea.
- 2:01But you'd never know. We found it to be perfectly fine.
- 2:05Yeah, that was my takeaway.
- 2:08Yeah, I've heard either like it's OK or real love. So I don't know. Yeah.
- 2:15Hey, OK and up is still pretty decent. Yeah, turn us.
- 2:19I've never gotten that kind of review on myself.
- 2:24The self love starts from within.
- 2:29So are we talking like one knuckle, two knuckles? How far within?
- 2:34What if it was comfortable at start and you got to work from there, you know?
- 2:38Oh, don't press it. OK, I feel you. Right. That's nice.
- 2:43Well, welcome back, Darrell.
- 2:45It feels like it's been too long and somehow feels like it's been no time at all.
- 2:50Yeah, exactly. You miss spider season, though.
- 2:53No, it's happening right now. Well, there's a there's a big boy like right at the bottom of my stairs.
- 2:58Yeah, I haven't gotten them in my face.
- 3:00No, they've been keeping they've been staying out of the walkway this year so far.
- 3:04Cowards. Yeah. Or we are planning.
- 3:08Sean, with you moving and this being your last spider season here, I'm absolutely going to bring spiders into your house.
- 3:15You're not allowed in my house anymore. Spider boxes.
- 3:17Definitely bringing spiders. Why would you do that? We're friends. For now.
- 3:22We still have to finish this podcast. Yeah, but not like next to each other.
- 3:27Don't bring spiders into my house. You're not my dad.
- 3:31The friends of the spiders we made along the way. No, they're not.
- 3:36OK, I won't bring spiders into your house.
- 3:39I'll put some in your car and you can take them to Portland.
- 3:42Then Portland can have spider season. Yeah. Portland does have spider season.
- 3:46Yeah. I mean, you're not that dissimilar from here. Yeah, their spiders suck, though.
- 3:49They do. They've got like the bad spiders. Yeah.
- 3:52We've got like benign big house spiders. Helpful spiders. Yeah.
- 3:56Bug eaters. They've got like people biters.
- 3:59I was in Portland once for a Road City Comic Con and a spider touched my peen.
- 4:05OK, I need to hear about that.
- 4:08I was very exhausted. Flew from Virginia to Portland.
- 4:15My bag got lost, which had all my stuff for the continent.
- 4:19And I was staying in my at a friend's house, which wasn't like the most savory part of town.
- 4:23So I'm waiting for my bag to show up.
- 4:26And the guy's like, yeah, I'm just doing rounds.
- 4:30I'll be, you know, getting there in a couple hours.
- 4:33I'm like, cool. So naturally you get your hog out.
- 4:36Yeah. Were you like bored and trying to clear cobwebs or something?
- 4:39You know, just knock them down. I'm just trying to stay up.
- 4:41Waiting for the fucking guy to show up with my bag.
- 4:44Three hours go by. You got to keep it up while you wait.
- 4:47Three hours go by. I call him and like, where the fuck are you?
- 4:49And he's like, oh, I just have one more one more delivery in Portland, but it's in southeast.
- 4:55And I got to head two hours north first.
- 4:57And I'm like, yeah, who do you think that last delivery is, motherfucker?
- 5:00So I can't sleep till my bag gets there. Otherwise, I can't do the convention.
- 5:03So I'm just I'm at about 26 hours of not sleeping.
- 5:07I go into the bathroom and I get my dick out to pee.
- 5:09And I'm just standing there like woozy.
- 5:11And I like open my grubby ass eyes and there's a spider just dangling in front of my face.
- 5:14I like instinctively like swipe and I feel something bounce off my deck.
- 5:19Oh, OK. I wanted more.
- 5:22I want to I want to scramble a scramble spider.
- 5:25Yeah, I wanted a spider to like just kind of reach out like Arcadian style and just like brush the head.
- 5:31Use its head of health. Yeah.
- 5:33Eight arms reach out from the dogmas and fucking crank you.
- 5:37That actually probably wouldn't be too bad.
- 5:41So much stimulation. Oh, yeah. There you go.
- 5:44You guys been reading my dream journals again.
- 5:46So welcome back to cage and apparently scanning them and emailing them to Darrell.
- 5:51I see why you send them to Darrell. The spider had the face of Willem Dafoe.
- 5:54We've got a whole separate group chat with all of our guests on it.
- 5:57We just don't invite me. Yeah, that's fair.
- 6:00Rip into your weird sex shit.
- 6:02I mean, you guys, there is there are there is the cage match like fan chat that I do not engage with whatsoever.
- 6:08Mm hmm. Yeah, it's good shit in there because they're beneath me.
- 6:11Oh, yeah, I'm definitely leaving that in.
- 6:14I love you, John and Freeman.
- 6:17You're the two people in a group chat. Yeah.
- 6:20The ones who actually engage. Is there anyone else in that chat? Cameron's in there.
- 6:24Hi, Cameron. I appreciate you, too.
- 6:26Welcome back to cage magical and around about way meeting Nicholas Cage.
- 6:29I'm your host, Sean, here with Nick, your co-host.
- 6:33Oh, perfect. Fine. Nick.
- 6:37And our producer, Peter. Hello.
- 6:40And again, our special guest, Darrell from cage something.
- 6:45Yeah, three times.
- 6:49I wouldn't expect you to remember on the third time.
- 6:51Why would you? Hello, I'm back.
- 6:54I'm from cage rage and Nick, this cage podcast.
- 6:57And I'm also from getting to foe you a dedicated to foe podcast covering the works of Nicholas Cage and Willem Dafoe respectively.
- 7:05There may or may not be hog chat more in one than the other.
- 7:08So we're all in good company in hog chat today.
- 7:11Darrell, I hope you don't mind, but I've tagged you as part of our episodes on IMDB, which I still think is hilarious that we can be on IMDB.
- 7:19I did wonder why I was showing up on IMDB. And now this all makes sense.
- 7:24We can just add people to IMDB.
- 7:26I mean, IMDB is a lot like Wikipedia where kind of anything goes and then they audit it eventually.
- 7:31No, sick. It's a wild, wild west. You guys want to be in some movies?
- 7:35I'm going to start some wild, wild west.
- 7:37Flat Earth or IMDB shit. Good. Yeah, I like that.
- 7:41Lots of trivia about movies. Do you know the world is flat?
- 7:45The core. There is no core. Look at the film.
- 7:48Who was recording it? Oh, God.
- 7:50And you start making like one of the flat earthers going to start like making like flatters films kind of like, you know, left behind.
- 7:58But like for flatters. Oh, yeah. Like we're going to go to the edge to the ice wall.
- 8:02Yeah. What's the opposite of left behind right here?
- 8:06Yeah. Just nothing of consequence happens.
- 8:09You just can't. There's just no slopes and it's never addressed.
- 8:12No inclines, no slopes, flat filmmaking.
- 8:16Easy walking. I mean, that would make biking a lot easier and boring.
- 8:21Can you imagine just biking all the time and always having to pedal, never getting to just roll down a hill?
- 8:27Yeah, that's no fun. Put your arms up like it's a roller coaster.
- 8:30You can't do that anymore. No, not on flat ground.
- 8:33Flat's boring. Yeah.
- 8:35Can you imagine celebrating riding on flat ground?
- 8:39Yay, I'm having so much fun.
- 8:42But I went fast for a bit and now I'm just going to raise my arms.
- 8:45I'm not into it. No, that's boring.
- 8:48You could be the Renegade who invented the ramp and then you would try to The Hague.
- 8:55So, Darrell, did you feel more connected to us watching The Wicker Man because it takes place in our area?
- 9:02In the Puget Sound. Is that correct?
- 9:06This is you are basically Wicker Man adjacent. We are.
- 9:09Yeah, we're close to the island. We're right next to that CG island from Mist.
- 9:13Yes, exactly. I mean, of course, it was recorded in Vancouver, Canada, but you know, which is north of here.
- 9:19Yeah, it's also Seattle adjacent. Yeah.
- 9:22So on this podcast, we take 64 Nicolas Cage films,
- 9:26Bracken them up Final Four style and we'll eventually whittle them down to what is the cagiest film of all as decided by Nick and me.
- 9:32I'm just giving it Peter more work to edit this so it makes sense.
- 9:35I don't care. You've really let this podcast go downhill.
- 9:40The edits get looser and looser.
- 9:42Flat ground all the way.
- 9:44Oh yeah, we can't talk about hills anymore. I'm not going to do this with my arms because I'm not having fun.
- 9:49Listen, if you want to introduce what the podcast is halfway through, then that's your prerogative.
- 9:53I don't know how to run your own podcast.
- 9:55Thank you, Daryl. You understand.
- 9:58I get it. There's no rules. No rules on flat ground, baby.
- 10:03You just see from ever.
- 10:05If it weren't for trees, we could probably see Daryl.
- 10:07Get a big telescope, get the right angle.
- 10:09Let's get rid of all the inclines, the declines, the slopes, the mounds.
- 10:15I could do with less mounds. I have no time for a mound.
- 10:18And Italy. Fuck that.
- 10:22And one of us could be a rapper called Flatman Scoop.
- 10:26I'm just saying there's great potential for flat merchandise.
- 10:30Oh, we could have our own signature set of flatware.
- 10:35Exactly. Now you're starting to get it.
- 10:38I love it. I'm in. I love marketing.
- 10:40Untapped potential. All drinks would have to be flat tires, flat. Very, very literal.
- 10:47Uncarbonated beer across the board. Fantastic.
- 10:50The Brits really went out on that one. They get their way.
- 10:53We went to war over this. We won.
- 10:56You can keep your flat, your flat country, country as flat as my goddamn ass.
- 11:02You can keep it. So the Wicker Man.
- 11:05So Wicker Man. That's what we're here to talk about.
- 11:07Daryl, you've seen The Wicker Man before. How many times have you seen this movie, do you think?
- 11:11I feel like four or five.
- 11:13I feel like I see it the way most of us see it, and that's through Nicolas Cage compilation clips.
- 11:18That's the only way to see it. So obviously we'll get into it.
- 11:21It sets up like it's going to be this big crazy thing.
- 11:24And for like 80 percent of it, it's really not. It's just actually quite boring.
- 11:28An interesting story about The Wicker Man for me is when I was at university.
- 11:32Is it University of America? Could you call it college? You have like five stages of everything.
- 11:36We call it a waste of time.
- 11:38Hey, for future Americans.
- 11:41For future dead. I went to art college, so I'm doing great.
- 11:44Extra future dead. Yeah.
- 11:47Actually, me doing a Nicolas Cage podcast makes a lot more sense right now.
- 11:50Yes, it does. But anyway, yes, university.
- 11:53All flat roads would lead here.
- 11:56So there was, you know, like a long story short, like a friend of mine that's in The Wicker Man.
- 12:01We'd all sourced in The Wicker Man.
- 12:03And it was known that I was the Nick Cage guy in like our friend group.
- 12:07And then some thing happened to me and my friend had like a falling out.
- 12:10He was the year above me.
- 12:11So he's been to his final year stuff, dissertations, all this kind of business.
- 12:15But as an apology gesture, he went on his his his Mac book.
- 12:21He took the Wicker Man film and somehow edited it down to his only Nicolas Cage's scenes,
- 12:28gave that to me as a DVD.
- 12:30And I said, you can never hurt me again.
- 12:32This is the greatest gift I've ever received.
- 12:35And then he punched you like Sister Beach.
- 12:37And then he pushed me into a wall of picture frames.
- 12:41I got all caught up when he ran off in a bear costume.
- 12:45But if you think The Wicker Man of its own accord or 100 minutes is pretty wild,
- 12:50you haven't seen the Nicolas Cage only cut.
- 12:53It makes less and more sense.
- 12:56I don't know. I'd have to ask if he still has it because in various house moves,
- 12:59like I've unfortunately lost the disk, which I'm still absolutely devastated about over the course of the last 10 or so years.
- 13:06But the memory remains is the main thing.
- 13:09And I remember just going from it's like a lot of it is the embodiment of a fever dream.
- 13:17And I really recommend someone makes a Nick Cage only cut of all of his films.
- 13:22Peter, this might be my magnum opus.
- 13:24We'll see. I was put on this earth for some good.
- 13:29Now's your time, coward.
- 13:32Let's do this. Seize life by those big flat balls.
- 13:36Yeah, no one's talking about girth anymore. It's all about that flat hog, baby.
- 13:41Flat and wide.
- 13:43It's all about that 16 pixel flat fucking Gallagher dick.
- 13:47Whatever do you want?
- 13:50But to answer your question, yes, I have seen The Wicker Man.
- 13:55I think I watched it earlier.
- 13:57It was my partner's first time watching it as well, so she had some thoughts.
- 14:02It was interesting. All of them fantastic.
- 14:05The first, obviously, because she does some like design work here and there.
- 14:09The opening credits to see fucking Papyrus in the credits.
- 14:12She was on points.
- 14:14She was like, this is the enemy of the designer.
- 14:17And she on principle didn't watch like the first 10 minutes, which I get it.
- 14:21I respect it. We've all we all have our lines in the sand.
- 14:24To be fair, the first 10 minutes of this movie do not matter.
- 14:26No, they're pretty inconsequential.
- 14:29OK, one thing I do want to talk about in the first like 10, 20 minutes.
- 14:33So I think we hit on this in the first time we talked about this movie.
- 14:36His cop friend, not Pete, but the lady cop.
- 14:39Yeah. Is she on the island at the end?
- 14:41There's like this big reveal where one lady takes off a mask and it's like a tall blonde lady.
- 14:46And I'm like, is that the same fucking person?
- 14:48No, it was either Sister Beach or Lili.
- 14:50So it was neither. I just watched it this morning.
- 14:52It was neither of them. It is.
- 14:54I just I'm telling you, it's a different clip because after that clip is when it's
- 14:58Sister Beach and Lili Sobieski.
- 15:00I'm going to turn this movie on right now.
- 15:02We're going to walk Darryl over the screen. We're all going to all going to watch this.
- 15:05No, I just keep looking at it. I'm like, I think that's supposed to be her.
- 15:08And it's supposed to be this big reveal of like everyone's been in on it.
- 15:11But like they don't spend any time on it.
- 15:13And it isn't like she's a really remarkable looking person.
- 15:16I mean, they do say the letter did get there without a stamp and she did deliver the mail.
- 15:21She did. She seems like weirdly obsessed with him.
- 15:24For all of those two minutes, we see them together. Yes.
- 15:27And she was playing in blonde. She was playing in blonde.
- 15:30That's true. I wanted the twin thing to still be more back to twin sest again.
- 15:35Right. Yeah. OK. Did that make it into the final cut?
- 15:37Oh, yeah. Nice. You know about twin sest, right, Darryl?
- 15:41Yeah, you guys got the Internet, right?
- 15:44We're all looking at the same shit, right?
- 15:47We're all on the same VPN here, right?
- 15:49We're all sharing the same Internet history.
- 15:51Yeah, I don't believe in incognito because I'm very proud of everything I've ever searched.
- 15:56You know, you've got to have you've got to be smart by what you search.
- 15:59Some flat twin sest. Yes, please.
- 16:01Flat twin sest.
- 16:03The second flat tower has been struck. You're going to keep that in there, don't you?
- 16:09Nick doesn't believe in it, so we can keep it in.
- 16:11I mean, just just like a Paper Mario 9-11 image just hit me in the head.
- 16:18It was like, oh, it's beautiful.
- 16:20I mean, it's not beautiful, though.
- 16:22It's beautiful. Paper Mario is a great game.
- 16:24Paper Mario is a beautiful game.
- 16:26It is a beautiful game, you're right.
- 16:28The 9-11 ending was just wild.
- 16:30Kind of out of Westfield, but even when flat 9-11 happens, it's still a beautiful world.
- 16:34That's what happens when you like Koopas on airplanes.
- 16:37Yeah, I said it.
- 16:39I'm racist against turtles.
- 16:43I think to your point, though, is if that lady was the same person, I don't know,
- 16:47because he he does make a comment later of that.
- 16:50Is it like Sister Rose, the teacher is like, did I speak to you earlier?
- 16:53She's like, no, we've never met before.
- 16:55He's like, are you sure?
- 16:57So he does see people who may or may not be the same person.
- 17:00Well, that scene is right after he leaves the schoolhouse, I think,
- 17:04because that's why I want the twin thing to be like more relevant.
- 17:07Well, and also, I mean, because I'm sure they were like, it's too tricky to film two people
- 17:11who are the same person at the same time in a scene.
- 17:13So like they never tried with her.
- 17:15But like Sister Rose and Sister Thorne literally are never on screen together.
- 17:19Which ones are they? Are they that lady?
- 17:21That's the teacher, the teacher.
- 17:23And then like the bitchy lady that he runs into at some point.
- 17:27Well, I feel like Lili Sobieski, when he meets her in the tavern drink hall,
- 17:32then goes right outside and she chopped into wood like that's always been a weird cut to me as well.
- 17:36There's a lot of fucking red herrings in this movie that go nowhere.
- 17:39So I think I'm sure remember Sean, did we watch this together the last time?
- 17:44Yes. OK, so last time we watched it, I like had a really fun time with it for some reason.
- 17:49And then I watched it was my winning personality.
- 17:52Well, thanks. That's helped. That helps a lot.
- 17:56And then this time when I was watching, I was like, God, it's so boring for like a huge portion of this movie.
- 18:02There's like little funny goofy bits like the Is that a shark in the bag?
- 18:06You know, like that kind of dumb shit.
- 18:08You know, it helps to look at the picture.
- 18:10All that kind of stuff is really like these little snapshots of funny shit.
- 18:13But then the rest of it is like a very dull procedural until all of a sudden he's just running around the island like like a man who is definitely like 45.
- 18:23You know, yeah, I think two things would have really improved the movie.
- 18:27And it's like if there were more scenes of him riding the bicycle, like literally if he was a great every time he went from one location to another, you mandated the bicycle come out and he rides the bike.
- 18:40I love that dorky ass bike. Yeah.
- 18:42And then to put like some Benny Hill music under the bicycle scene.
- 18:47Like or some like just goofy be jazz. I love when he's done talking to summer's aisle the first time and she's like, you're transport.
- 18:58It's just that one dude like rolls the bike.
- 19:01I feel like this movie needed everyone who wasn't Nicholas Cage to try acting 20 percent harder or 20 percent less.
- 19:10There's just this. I mean, 20 percent harder.
- 19:14There's just this like milieu of like they don't care, but they care enough for a paycheck.
- 19:19And I need them to care a lot less or a lot more. Yeah.
- 19:22I think Nicholas Cage is the only person giving this film the acting it deserves.
- 19:27I think a lot of the blame on this is that like Neil LaBute, however you say his last name, obviously as a man and as a director and a writer does have the charisma of, oh, where vegetables.
- 19:40He's got just nothing about him. There's no sauce.
- 19:44Obviously, they've stripped away the whole, I guess, like religious kind of thing of the original one.
- 19:49Like what they've really done is they've said, Nicholas Cage, you come to an island of women and you're about to disrupt an entire community's thing by just being really rude, aggressive.
- 20:02And I don't know exactly how American laws work in the sense of crossing state lines. As far as I'm aware, he's not an inspector or a detective.
- 20:11He's just a guy on a motorbike on a highway who got a commendation for letting a girl explode.
- 20:18I don't know how that works. And then he's talking about himself to go to an island, insult everyone, ass all everyone.
- 20:25And really, even though, yes, he's been kind of bamboozled to go into the island, he is really the villain of the piece.
- 20:34And guess what he deserves?
- 20:36It really is the most effectively Americanized version of a movie ever.
- 20:42Like he just comes in, he's ignorant of the situation, he imposes himself on everybody, he assaults somebody, there's a gun involved and women were harmed generally.
- 20:55I'm going to fucking go home and eat some ribs. I like this so much.
- 21:01Ruins a way of life.
- 21:03Yeah, well, when he's saying, like, look, there's a missing girl on this island. I think you said it, Pete, it usually helps if you look at the photograph.
- 21:12Right off the bat, okay, you're not supposed to be here. You've crossed state lines. You have no authority.
- 21:19No authority.
- 21:20You have no power. There's nothing to suggest that he's got any kind of rank in the police force that he's with.
- 21:28He's a highway cop.
- 21:30He's just highway patrol.
- 21:32He's got speeding tickets. That's it.
- 21:35I do like when he's that little montage of him, like when he's giving people tickets, he goes to the long guy, he's like, you know, I pulled you over and the guy's just like, yeah.
- 21:45Yeah, I kind of liked at the start where he's pulled over with that mother in the door, she keeps throwing that doll out and then that truck plows into him from nowhere.
- 21:56Funny every single time.
- 21:58Absolutely.
- 21:59One thing I always enjoy is that like for the first time watching this, you never know when that truck's going to strike that little girl again. It's not over for her.
- 22:06Every time he's on, when he wakes up from the nightmare on the dock, I always just want a truck to just run him over real quick and then he wakes up again.
- 22:15Yeah, the double dream sequence.
- 22:18My favorite bit is that he's just sat on the dock and he's just had a daymare. He just drifted off. He's like, oh, so you're looking for a missing girl and he just stops to have...
- 22:28Just a small stop for a nap.
- 22:31You just stop for a horrifying thing, a nightmare in the day. You've had a daymare. You keep getting hit by the truck. When he was trying to get the girl out of that truck as well, he's smashing that rear windscreen with his helmet and he tries to prize it apart.
- 22:45He's like, take my hand. And she's just staring at him. So when she explodes, deserved. But at the same time, he was just going to pull a kid through shards of broken glass.
- 22:55It's safety glass. It's fine.
- 22:57That stuff don't cut.
- 22:59I don't know, is children's skin the weakest of skins?
- 23:02I mean, would you rather be mildly cut up or exploded?
- 23:07The kid obviously chose exploded.
- 23:10I wish she just gave him like double fingers and like right when it explodes, like fuck you.
- 23:16So I didn't realize it, but I wound up watching the unedited version.
- 23:22Oh, yeah, OK.
- 23:23The extreme version, which is the exact same movie.
- 23:26But you see the hobbling, don't you?
- 23:28You see the hobbling. Yeah.
- 23:29And then the B scene is actually in there, which looks terrible because CGI is a better.
- 23:34The only other difference is they cut the end.
- 23:36They cut like the ending of the girls hitting on James Franco.
- 23:42Franco and he was Dipper and Gravity Falls. Yes, he was.
- 23:46He's also the son of John Ritter, Jason Ritter. Jason.
- 23:48We got there. Yeah, nice.
- 23:50Good work. Way to use your brain.
- 23:53But I thought watching that when they do the whole beast thing, he goes into like anaphylactic shock or whatever shock it is.
- 23:59Anaphylactic. Yeah, that sounds right.
- 24:01But he like passes out. I'm like, this is actually kind of nicer that they like knock him out before like they burn him alive.
- 24:08And then the doctor like shoots him up with adrenaline.
- 24:11And EpiPen. Oh yeah, EpiPen.
- 24:13It's B. Epi. Yeah.
- 24:14I don't know why I thought adrenaline.
- 24:16But like an EpiPen and she's like, I'm going to keep you alive for the next part.
- 24:19And I'm like, oh, this is meaner now.
- 24:22I like how they load him into the chest cavity by like dragging him up from between the legs.
- 24:28So he hangs down like a little Nicholas Cage wiener for a minute.
- 24:32And then they load him in.
- 24:34It looked like the Wicker Man had a huge dong.
- 24:36Just the best dong.
- 24:38This is all I watch for.
- 24:40Oh, that could be a dong.
- 24:42Yeah, it's a shame that no one no one who was like participating in the crowd was like, who Wiccan they man right now?
- 24:49Just like a high five in each other whilst Cage is getting like just dragged by his lapels.
- 24:54They should have played like Nelly Furtado's I'm Like a Bird as he was getting dragged up.
- 24:58And I think that would have we need to make the ultimate cut of this film.
- 25:01I mean, it's been redone once.
- 25:03Let's do it again. Yeah.
- 25:04Now it's more bicycle. More bicycle flat.
- 25:07One hundred percent. Be the men.
- 25:09Be the people that you want to be that you would like to inspire.
- 25:12You know, the 2007 YouTube poop editors out there.
- 25:16I remember. I remember YouTube poop.
- 25:18I never forgot.
- 25:19I think one of the things about this movie is it seems like it tries really hard to be full of mystery,
- 25:24but literally none of the mysteries that they put out there ever pay out.
- 25:28Like there's no explanation of anything.
- 25:31You see the weird like bee stung dude in Summer's Isles house.
- 25:35You see that one lady getting, you know, like bees crawling all over her in a bee beard.
- 25:39It's like, what is the what is this for?
- 25:41Nothing. Nothing. It's for nothing.
- 25:43Why are there so many twins? I don't know.
- 25:45Doesn't matter. Don't ask questions.
- 25:47What's in the fucking bag? Is it a shark?
- 25:50It's like you just need nothing ever pays out.
- 25:53Like there's no explanation of anything.
- 25:55You know, why? Why does fucking Dr.
- 25:58Moss have like all these weird jars of deformed babies?
- 26:01Those are the boys. Are they?
- 26:03Well, probably if they had little boy parts, I'm assuming could have been bee stings.
- 26:10It's just a strange movie. It is.
- 26:12There are so many things that I'm like, oh, OK, you know, this could be
- 26:16the Shutter Island or something where it actually really does pay out.
- 26:21And it's like, no, no, you just don't find out.
- 26:23No. John would turn to me every once in a while.
- 26:25I'll be like, I'd be like, mm hmm.
- 26:28Yeah, with no real positive resolution or Cage's character,
- 26:34it doesn't feel like anything mattered.
- 26:37Like, OK, it's still going to be, you know, midsummer or whatever.
- 26:41It is kind of just shitty midsummer.
- 26:43Like the only thing that makes this movie palatable is just Nick Cage's
- 26:47Nick Cage hamming it up for the whole film.
- 26:49Him going into the classroom and like erasing all this stuff in that one little section
- 26:54and just writing Rowan, whatever on the board.
- 26:58Woodward Rowan Woodward.
- 26:59And then all the kids are like, we don't know her at all.
- 27:02Yeah, just running around ripping masks off kids.
- 27:04What about the fucking line through on her like ledger for her name?
- 27:09It's like good way to bury it. Yeah.
- 27:11But the like fucking crow in the desk still gets me.
- 27:14It's like, oh, and then the girls get them again later
- 27:17and with the girl pretending to be dead in the closet.
- 27:20Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 27:22You've never had a dead desk crow and it shows.
- 27:26You haven't lived.
- 27:27It's better than a spider bouncing off your dick.
- 27:29Well, yeah, spider crow, some horrible flat spider crow thing.
- 27:33But my partner is a teacher.
- 27:35When he went into that school and started rubbing all like the
- 27:37that one of the pros off the board, she was like,
- 27:40you just don't go into someone's classroom mid less than just wipe it all down.
- 27:44Just to scream at the children.
- 27:47I mean, you know, to be fair, they're all gaslighting him.
- 27:50It's a room full of gaslighters.
- 27:52And he he had more restraint in me.
- 27:54And I think I outright said this to my partners.
- 27:57I like I would have at least punched the twins because they were freaking me out.
- 28:00Oh, the old ones.
- 28:02All of them. Oh, young.
- 28:04Oh, yeah. You know, you know,
- 28:06you know, see the best part about twins, you just get to.
- 28:08Oh, yeah. Head bonk.
- 28:10You assume that they're two separate like parts of the same whole.
- 28:14So you're trying to put them back together.
- 28:16The twin twin magic thing you punch one, the other one feels it.
- 28:20So, you know, it's twice the twice the payoff.
- 28:22Have you ever watched the movie?
- 28:24This is related.
- 28:25Have you ever watched the movie Sorceress, Old Sword and Sorcery?
- 28:29Like, no, I don't think I have lots of boobs.
- 28:32So there's there's two characters.
- 28:36They're twins. See, and they feel all the same things.
- 28:40One of them, like they just discover that they're girls.
- 28:43They always assumed they were boys because their dad told them and never told them the difference.
- 28:47That's that's something.
- 28:50But like when one of them realizes that they're a girl, they finally get laid.
- 28:54And the other one is just like at camp.
- 28:57And the dwarf is just standing there and she's just getting off on the ground and the dwarf watches.
- 29:02And it's just really weird and creepy.
- 29:05So I've been watching a lot of sword and sorcery movies lately.
- 29:08And the. Yeah.
- 29:12You got to get your twin says to fix.
- 29:14Yeah. You freak.
- 29:16So this is going exactly how I expected a Darrell episode would go.
- 29:21I won't let you have a standard conversation.
- 29:23It's not in the contract to do. That's perfect.
- 29:25Yeah. Your writers, it's going to go fucking crazy.
- 29:29We're going to make it weird. There's going to be flat theories.
- 29:32There's going to be flat nine eleven. There's going to be twin zest.
- 29:35It might be flat. That's not for me to say.
- 29:38I'm not doing myself.
- 29:40I don't dictate where the flat conversation goes all of the time.
- 29:43I can tell you one thing. It's not going off an edge because they don't exist.
- 29:46That's right. Wait a minute.
- 29:49You're a plant. No edges exist.
- 29:53I get Thanos from existence.
- 29:56It's just too risky. Black holes.
- 30:00We go back to our old episodes. It's just us talking to no one.
- 30:03No one. Yeah, exactly. And our guests dare.
- 30:07Can you edit together like a package where it's you've actually been listening
- 30:10back to all my episodes and I get hit by a truck in every single
- 30:15I just put my black holes on over it like a turn to do the whole thing.
- 30:20Seasons worth of payoff. So good.
- 30:23I can't wait to go back and have Peter re edit all of our previous content.
- 30:28Absolutely. It's worth it for one joke.
- 30:33That's for the fine group. That's for the group, isn't it?
- 30:35Oh, yeah, exactly. They'll really appreciate it.
- 30:38You get the long term. Yeah, John and Freeman.
- 30:42And maybe Cameron.
- 30:46Cameron, the one I met outside the bird that one time, apparently.
- 30:48Yes. Yeah, you got us a supporter.
- 30:51Good work. So, OK, I know I love the bicycle scenes the most out of this movie.
- 30:57Yes. What are like your most nonconventional favorite parts of the film?
- 31:02I still love when he just sucker punches sister beach.
- 31:05Like, that's just the best part of this film.
- 31:07Slow walk down the stairs, the whole building.
- 31:09It's like a fighter coming down to the ring.
- 31:11He knew exactly what he was going to do. Yeah.
- 31:13I do like that at the end when she does take the thing off,
- 31:17she does have like a big red spot on her face to I was like, good continuity.
- 31:21Someone was paying attention.
- 31:23Someone on that business was paying attention. Yeah.
- 31:25I kept getting distracted at the last scene when like the reveal happens.
- 31:30There's this one woman and she's a little out of focus because she's in the background who looks like she's in blackface.
- 31:35But when you get a close up on her later, when they're like, you know, face, it's be face.
- 31:39Yeah, but it's like really dark colors. So like you don't see the stripes from far away.
- 31:43I'm like, that was a bold decision. Not a good not a good look.
- 31:47Are you doing B face and buzz buzz?
- 31:50I think summer's Isles house is probably my favorite.
- 31:53Yeah, like very weird. And then he's like walking through the gardens and he's swatting bees off.
- 31:59It's like, dude, get the fuck out of there. Yeah.
- 32:03Yeah. He's magnetized to danger and walking through bees running into bees.
- 32:07Cycling is real cocky.
- 32:09Of all the things that don't make sense about this film,
- 32:11them killing the pilot who like brings them all their supplies still always bothers me.
- 32:18Why they give him wicker hands like that's a lot of work.
- 32:21To fuck with Nick.
- 32:23Again, that's the one part of the film that I mean, there's a lot of parts of the film that don't work.
- 32:27But like that one's the one that's just like just pointless to fuck with him.
- 32:31They completely fuck up their entire like ability to get shit.
- 32:34Well, he did betray their trust.
- 32:37But that was the whole point. That was to get out there.
- 32:40Hmm. He's a man.
- 32:43Men are expendable in this society, so it's fine.
- 32:46Yeah, they're all drones.
- 32:48They can't say anything. All they do is harvest and drink and drink the beer.
- 32:53That's all they do.
- 32:54How do you think they choose which boys to keep alive?
- 32:57Strongest stock.
- 32:59I believe that's what they established.
- 33:02So like just from Sister Beach then?
- 33:04Yeah.
- 33:05Yeah. Whoever can fight Sister Beach may go on to the plantation of honey and secure the harvest.
- 33:11That's when you can get stung by a bunch of bees and just be in bed.
- 33:14Homestove you has the strongest boy with the flyest hog.
- 33:20He will lead us into the next harvest.
- 33:22This movie is so dumb.
- 33:24I love it. I still love it.
- 33:25I do too.
- 33:26I'm so glad it made it to the slicks team.
- 33:29As it should.
- 33:30Yeah. I mean, it really does have a place.
- 33:32So actually on that note, Darryl, like why do you think this belongs in the echelon of like tough weird cage?
- 33:38I think this is kind of a film that I guess if you look at it in terms of the cage's performances came along at just the right time.
- 33:47It was like 2006.
- 33:49So YouTube is still very young.
- 33:51It is still a boy yet to be stung.
- 33:54And this is like the time where I think every other channel is some film review channel.
- 34:00Everyone's being angry for the sake of being angry because no one's reviewing nice stuff in 2006.
- 34:05Everyone's being a piece of shit.
- 34:06So it comes along around a similar time with the Nicklaus Cage losing his shit compilations.
- 34:11And it's just kind of like a gestating part and he just builds and it has this whole lore about it.
- 34:17It's like, oh, this is one of the worst Nicklaus Cage films.
- 34:19All the best ones, depending on how you view Nicklaus Cage.
- 34:22It's one of the cages to the cage films and for like out of context scenes.
- 34:27And if you know, we've probably all seen an out of context meme from this film of him in the bear costume, punching a woman, blowing a horn.
- 34:34Who amongst us hasn't?
- 34:38Who amongst us has not fantasized of that moment?
- 34:41But this is just, I think, where I don't know if there's a better word for this.
- 34:47Some of the downfall, I'm going to use that in our quotes, of Nicklaus Cage may have started here.
- 34:52Because what was 2006, is this the same year he did the Twin Towers movie, which is speaking of Flight 911?
- 34:59It was. It was right around the same time.
- 35:01He was doing this. I think, did he do the Ant Bully this year as well?
- 35:04An absolutely insane year for Nicklaus Cage output.
- 35:08You start your year as an ant wizard. You end your year burning in the torso of a Wicker Man.
- 35:14So I think a lot of people will say like, oh, you look at a film like this and this is why Nicklaus Cage is insane.
- 35:18But this is what we've been talking about though, because like most of this film, it's a little rough around the edges.
- 35:25It's a little directionless. It's very absurd.
- 35:28And even though they claim to have used 80% of the exact same dialogue as the original film,
- 35:34and then they claimed whenever I was like, this sucks, what have you done?
- 35:38And then they had the nerve to wreck on history and say, oh yeah, we did that intentionally.
- 35:43It should be viewed as a black comedy. So the joke's on you if you didn't get it, which is some grade A gaslighting.
- 35:50Fantastic stuff. Good marketing team.
- 35:53On that merit alone for the marketing of blaming everyone but yourself, Neil Labute,
- 35:59I think it deserves to be in the Criterion collection. It deserves to be studied.
- 36:05None of it makes sense. But this is one of those things.
- 36:08And I sort of talk about this even with films that are a bit duller and not as great.
- 36:13There's a thing with Nicklaus Cage movies is that, you know, you don't remember half of what happened here because it's kind of not interesting.
- 36:19It's very boring. But my God, do you remember a Nicklaus Cage performance?
- 36:23And this, for better or worse, is one of his most memorable because you almost know that because he's a producer on this as well.
- 36:31So he's like, well, I think I'm going to do it this way.
- 36:33And I think Neil Labute, the only way his direction in this and he's very boring, get it?
- 36:39He makes sense for me is that any time he should have been doing his job, he was rolling around in a circle trying to suck his own heart.
- 36:45That's the only way this makes sense for me.
- 36:47They called they called him Rolling Neil Labute on the set.
- 36:50Oh, Roland Neil.
- 36:52Old Rolling Neil, he was Sonic the Hedgehog, he's way around the set.
- 36:56Just spraying his rings all over the wall.
- 37:00Just spraying rings everywhere.
- 37:02I don't know what he sounds like, but in my head, he's like, I swear I was close to his game as I can nail what days behind schedule.
- 37:09We're going over budget here.
- 37:11Is this a trapped in paradise situation where Nick Cage just takes over the production?
- 37:14I have to assume so. Honestly, I haven't seen the original Wicker Man.
- 37:18So for all intents and purposes, as far as I'm concerned, this is the superior Wicker Man.
- 37:22This is the only Wicker Man that we've seen.
- 37:25So on principle, I'm not going to watch the original.
- 37:29Yeah. Were the bees in the original?
- 37:31Don't care. Don't know.
- 37:33Oh, no way to find out.
- 37:35Doesn't exist.
- 37:36Well, they couldn't have had bees. Bees are a new world crop.
- 37:38There were no bees in 1973.
- 37:42That's right. Just just that store bought honey.
- 37:45How did it get there? We don't know.
- 37:48We don't know. All things a damn conspiracy theory.
- 37:51But I got thoughts on Winnie the Pooh.
- 37:53Yeah, just being pantsless all the time.
- 37:55Major honey producer.
- 37:58I think honey consumer.
- 38:00A little bit of both.
- 38:02Getting honey in and honey out.
- 38:04Honey in and honey out.
- 38:06I don't know why that grosses me out so much, but it really does.
- 38:09I like to imagine Winnie the Pooh.
- 38:11Definitely came out the last time I was on this podcast.
- 38:13It did. Yes.
- 38:14And I think Winnie the Pooh flew into the Twin Towers the last time I was on this podcast.
- 38:18Yes.
- 38:19There is a recurring theme here.
- 38:22Honey can't melt steel beams, I believe.
- 38:28Yes.
- 38:29Put it on a T-shirt.
- 38:33You know what? I still believe that.
- 38:34I don't know how long it's been, but honey cannot melt steel beams.
- 38:37We should get the Mythbusters on this.
- 38:39I can't remember, because we're talking about all the movie bears, because we're talking about Paddington.
- 38:44Oh God. Yeah.
- 38:48Yeah, exactly.
- 38:51I guess if you replaced Nicholas Gage's character in this, exact same dialogue, maybe the exact same intonation, but with Winnie the Pooh.
- 39:00It's Edwin Mayless. It's Winnie the Mayless.
- 39:05Winnie the Highway Cop.
- 39:07And then he's just saying stuff like, bitches, you bitches killing me will bring back your goddamn money.
- 39:13And then he's getting his little Winnie the Pooh knees smashed him with a hammer.
- 39:18By somebody in a Tigger costume.
- 39:23It's very nice. I like this new edit. Get on it, Peter.
- 39:26Yeah, no, I'm glad about this.
- 39:29Do you guys have any last thoughts on this one?
- 39:31I still I still thoroughly enjoy this film for how bad it is. I have fun with it every single time.
- 39:38It's terrifically entertaining if you've got time to get through the boring parts.
- 39:43It's one of those things where it does have that.
- 39:46You mentioned the Wicker Man was like, oh, that's the worst movie.
- 39:48I'm like, it's fucking not. Yeah.
- 39:50Sadly, there's a lot worse.
- 39:52I mean, gladly, there's a lot worse.
- 39:54Someone recently told me, it's like, oh, that's like the worst movie ever.
- 39:57I'm like, it's not like, well, it's worse than a cage. We're definitely not.
- 40:01We have a bracket that proves it.
- 40:05Yeah, we did the work. Yeah.
- 40:07You haven't watched 64 Nicolas Cage movies. You don't get to talk.
- 40:12You wouldn't last five minutes in my world.
- 40:17Is this where Winnie the Pooh keeps coming up with you because you didn't do the impression.
- 40:20You have a very good Winnie the Pooh voice.
- 40:22It shouldn't be as sinister as it is, but you know, there's Winnie the Pooh horror films out now, so it feels right.
- 40:28That's true. Yeah.
- 40:29Oh yeah, we can use as much of this as we want.
- 40:31That's true. Public domain.
- 40:32Absolutely.
- 40:33Yeah, come at me Christopher Robin.
- 40:35Exactly. He's public domain.
- 40:37He did a 9-11. He was on the stormed beaches of Normandy.
- 40:42But on the wrong side.
- 40:44He stormed them from the land side.
- 40:47Yeah.
- 40:48English is nished.
- 40:52That's fucking French or something.
- 40:54Amongst various other war crimes.
- 40:56I'm going to say, I don't know how much is going to make the cut.
- 40:59Everything.
- 41:02When the FBI is listing, I need you to know this is all satire and.
- 41:05Yes, we'll put that at the top.
- 41:08Anytime the Darrell comes on this podcast, there will be a mention of atrocities.
- 41:12There will be a mention of 9-11.
- 41:14Winnie the Pooh will come up.
- 41:16I'm surprised you don't mention come yet.
- 41:18I feel like we've not hit all the infinity stones.
- 41:21Well, we did have sprain rings, which I think was.
- 41:24It was implied we had honey in honey out.
- 41:27I like it. You like specified atrocities like you separated atrocities and 9-11.
- 41:33It's his own thing.
- 41:34We are talking fact and fiction.
- 41:39Thank you for talking about. Are we talking about thick 9-11 or flat 9-11?
- 41:43There's two 9-11s.
- 41:45Full thickness 9-11.
- 41:47Always fun to be here.
- 41:49Thank you very much.

- 42:42It is an absolutely delightful time and you can find us in all the usual places and that's a defoe you pod.
- 42:51There is mandatory to foe hog chat in every episode as well.
- 42:54So naturally ticking all the boxes.
- 42:57I mean, what was he?
- 42:58His hog was described as too disturbing to be on screen or something.
- 43:02Yeah.
- 43:03For Antichrist is just too big.
- 43:05So he is not able either in flat theories.
- 43:09No, unfortunately, he is living proof that we live in a thick world.
- 43:13Keep it thick, baby.
- 43:17Was a beautiful wingback snakeskin cut chair.
- 43:19It was the best chair I've ever seen.
- 43:21That's nice.
- 43:22It was a really high.
- 43:23What was the hotel?
- 43:24It was Hotel Chicago.
- 43:25It was a real scumbag fucking hotel.
- 43:27It was a terrible hotel.
- 43:28But unless you want to watch your wife get fucked.
- 43:31Yeah.
- 43:32Good chair.
- 43:33Yeah.
- 43:34Unless you got a great bowl with you.
- 43:35It's so funny like that, that's mainstream knowledge.
- 43:40Exactly.
- 43:41Yeah.
- 43:42I like to see my wife just get really underground thing.
- 43:44It was like, that's the chair you sit in while your wife gets fucked by a stranger.
- 43:48Until the last like people your fingers and lean in five years or so.
- 43:52I always assumed that was like the true lies chair.
- 43:55But now it's now it's the cucking chair.
- 43:57It was the cucking chair.
- 43:58He was kind of cucking himself.
- 44:00Kind of kind of it was kind of a metal way.
- 44:02Yeah.
- 44:03True life is a great movie.
- 44:05It is a terrific movie.
- 44:06He's terrible.
- 44:07Like there's not a good person in that movie.
- 44:09We watched I watched it recently.
- 44:10I was like he's never been manipulating his wife the entire time.
- 44:13Kidnaps her.
- 44:14Basically tortures her to a certain degree.
- 44:17Who's that?
- 44:18Is it Dan Aykroyd that's with him in that?
- 44:20No, it's Tom Arnold.
- 44:21Tom Arnold.
- 44:22Tom Arnold is right on.
- 44:23The best part is that whole movie is it's what Paxton is the whole reason to watch that movie.
- 44:28He's doing his spazzy.
- 44:30That's like a 10 year old boy.
- 44:32How did that line make it?
- 44:34Who knows?
- 44:35Just screaming.
- 44:36He's great.
- 44:37Wow.
- 44:38It's been a long time.
- 44:39I used to love just throwing on just shit ass Schwarzenegger movies.
- 44:43It's a that's heat.
- 44:45So red heat.
- 44:47Yeah, red heat.
- 44:48It's a different movie.
- 44:49Yeah, that's a better one.
- 44:50Yeah, it'd be definitely better movie.
- 44:52Yeah, that genre is just I guess Fast and Furious is the spiritual successor to like
- 44:56the big 80s and 90s action movies.
- 44:58But they're just not the same.
- 45:00There's a point in True Lies where like two dogs jump at him and like he bonks their heads
- 45:06together.
- 45:07And like, amazing.
- 45:08I got to rewatch that movie.
- 45:10Yeah, it's pretty it's pretty ridiculous.
- 45:12I'm thinking I don't know how to start.
- 45:14You know, you're doing it.
- 45:15Yeah, this is it.
- 45:16And our friend Tank Nick.
- 45:19Yeah, yeah.
- 45:20No, we finally outnumber.
- 45:21Yeah, like we're the dominant species now.
- 45:24Gross.
- 45:25Well, white dominant nomenclature.
- 45:27Finally, the Nick vote counts for two.
- 45:30This is me putting what has been an otherwise lucrative career at risk by talking about
- 45:37a difficult movie.
- 45:39Yeah, absolutely.
- 45:40Well, we have a big listenership.
- 45:42So hey, at least you don't have to talk about eight millimeter.
- 45:45I don't know.
- 45:46I feel like that one's probably an easier approach.
- 45:48That one has like a sort of at least a moral standpoint.
- 45:52Whereas this one just does not seem to know what good and bad is, which is a very like
- 45:57lynch and kind of thing anyway.
- 45:58But by the end of the movie of eight millimeter, do you think like what is good and what is
- 46:04bad is the same as it was in the beginning?
- 46:06Because like now he's just like vengeance killing.
- 46:09Sure, sure.
- 46:10But I mean, like at least it's on the side of like this thing that I am killing for against
- 46:15is like well established and it's wrong.
- 46:17But like by the end of Wild at Heart, like who has really turned into a better person
- 46:21or even like I don't know.
- 46:22I don't think it's a point.
- 46:23There's no arc.
- 46:24Right.
- 46:25Oh, like obviously, that's better.
- 46:26Sailors better.
- 46:27Sailors.
- 46:28He calls those guys faggots and then he's like, I'm sorry for calling you homosexual.
- 46:33He grew so fast.
- 46:36That's right.
- 46:37Like Lynch does tie up the entire moral arc in like two minutes.
- 46:40He's like, oh yeah, we forgot to like put a bow on this.
- 46:42Yeah, let's have this unprompted thing we've been flirting with a reference to Wizard of
- 46:47Oz, like let's just go way out over the top, bring it down.
- 46:52The thing that occurred to me coming in was like, in a way, it's strange because Nicolas
- 46:56Cage is probably the most reserved in the entire movie, which is a very odd thing to
- 47:01say, especially given like the fact that it ends with him singing Elvis on the hood of
- 47:07a car and that and he's the most reserved performance through the entire thing, I think
- 47:12is a testament to this movie.
- 47:14Yeah, I fucking love every performance around Nicolas Cage.
- 47:18And yeah, in that, in that sense, he is definitely kind of the straight man in the show, even
- 47:24though there's so much about the character that is incredibly large, like his dancing
- 47:30techniques, his sick backflips out of cars, cars.
- 47:35Yeah.
- 47:36Fucking sexing.
- 47:37He seems like a real lover.
- 47:41No need for the cut chair.
- 47:43Or push it right up against the table.
- 47:46Everybody's in.
- 47:47Yeah.
- 47:48Come on, Bobby Peru.
- 47:49That was not those teeth.
- 47:50No, I was, I was talking to my wife about this last night and she's never seen.
- 47:54I was like, I don't recommend like, let's not go there.
- 47:56But I was kind of walking her through it and I was like, all right, this is Nicolas Cage,
- 47:59Laura Dern, Laura Dern's mother, right?
- 48:02Diane Ladd plays her mother.
- 48:04Like I think she got best supporting actress for that or nominated, nominated, nominated,
- 48:08which is crazy to think that that was a nominated role because it's just that.
- 48:12And then you go on that tangent of Crispin Glover as a schizophrenic Santa Claus for like
- 48:16a minute for like a minute.
- 48:18Just pushing a black glove around on the ground and screaming and making sandwiches.
- 48:22Cockroaches on his butthole.
- 48:25Weird little like dance he does in front of the fence.
- 48:29Yeah.
- 48:30Yeah.
- 48:31Harry Dean Stanton.
- 48:32And then you have Willem Dafoe.
- 48:34Like that's it's a is that is that the best indie alt casting of all time?
- 48:40Maybe.
- 48:41Yeah.
- 48:42I mean, it really is.
- 48:43It's an absolute banger of people.
- 48:45And then you have the usual like hodgepodge of random David Lynch sort of bizarro characters
- 48:50to character actors.
- 48:51Yeah.
- 48:52But yeah, nobody puts together a castless quite like David Lynch and Wes Anderson.
- 48:58And they come in a completely different tones.
- 49:00Also, there's a similar players in each one, like like Dafoe.
- 49:04Dafoe is the common thread between Wes Anderson and David Lynch.
- 49:07There's a world in which Willem Dafoe, David Lynch and Wes Anderson have coffee at some
- 49:11point in their life, which I think would be a really fun conversation.
- 49:14Well, David Lynch can't leave his house anymore, so it hasn't happened.
- 49:17It won't happen now.
- 49:18Why doesn't he leave his house?
- 49:19He's from smoking his whole life.
- 49:21He has severe emphysema and pretty much a cold will kill him.
- 49:24It's nothing to have sympathy over.
- 49:27Like the guy is very enthusiastically pro smoking.
- 49:30Yeah.
- 49:31I told the story about it.
- 49:32You did do it to yourself.
- 49:33But he's also like 80 something.
- 49:34There's no way or there's no reason he should be that fucking hot, though.
- 49:37Like, God damn.
- 49:38Like, that's a good looking man.
- 49:40Is a good looking dude.
- 49:41Yeah.
- 49:42How do you smoke all the time and are old and sick and look that good?
- 49:46So he started smoking.
- 49:48He does have cigarettes made you cool.
- 49:49Right.
- 49:50Like he's from that generation.
- 49:51So it just carries forward that he would continue to look cool.
- 49:54He's the inspiration for that saying.
- 49:56Yeah, right.
- 49:57But, you know, and then in the 80s and 90s, it didn't no longer age you cool.
- 50:00Just, you know, kill your baby or whatever.
- 50:03And then, you know, under cool.
- 50:04But what if you smoke too at the same time?
- 50:06Oh, yeah.
- 50:07Very difficult.
- 50:08And it hurts.
- 50:09Yeah.
- 50:10Good to know.
- 50:11In fact, too much cigarette at once.
- 50:13I did try the cartoon thing where you have like five cigarettes in your mouth.
- 50:16You just smoke them.
- 50:17And it is a it's like that's how you die.
- 50:19It's a mistake.
- 50:20Yes, it is.
- 50:21Cartoons, again, have not provided me with proper guidance on how to live my life.
- 50:25You're telling me I can't slice a single bean into wafers in layers and then serve it up.
- 50:30Well, that's where the
- 50:43yea
- 50:49weird.
- 50:49Yeah, he's going to come out small and probably have a podcast.
- 50:53When you meet the kid, he's essentially like from Newsies.
- 50:57Oh, yeah. Right. Yeah.
- 50:58Oh, man. And he does that stupid.
- 51:00He's wearing fucking braces.
- 51:01Yeah. So this is the third film in which Nick Cage gets out of prison,
- 51:06meets his child and brings him a stuffed animal.
- 51:08Yes. The parallels between this and Conair is and stolen.
- 51:14Is the other one.
- 51:14So he knew his daughter stolen was the other one.
- 51:16But he brings her to that big fucking.
- 51:18I thought it was a bunny, but you know, you're ready.
- 51:20It was. Yeah, it was.
- 51:21Yeah, we were trying to figure out how many movies Nick Cage has been to prison.
- 51:24So a lion, a bear and a bunny.
- 51:27Nice. Whatever like dialect coach taught him that southern accent
- 51:32deserves a bonus because he uses that thing from like 1985 to like 2005.
- 51:38Oh, yeah. He's like when he discovers Boston.
- 51:41Yeah, right.
- 51:42Right. He transitions in the next phase.
- 51:44Wait, is the Boston the problem?
- 51:46That's his dark times.
- 51:48It could have been.
- 51:49Maybe they only paid for a Boston accent.
- 51:52I like to think that H.I. and sailor are like brothers.
- 51:55Yeah, this is seems like a shared universe to a certain degree.
- 51:59Just like one's a darker side than the other.
- 52:01And they both have the same vibe, the same kind of energy.
- 52:04They're both like live action cartoons.
- 52:07Just one came on after nine and the other one was out of prime time.
- 52:11So thank you.
- 52:11Had seen this movie in the past, right?
- 52:13Like a long time ago, back when I was like into endurance cinema and stuff, you know,
- 52:17I think that like a lot of Lynch is kind of ruined by the fan base.
- 52:22And what I mean by that is that people tend to over rotate on him
- 52:27being a genius versus like he's quirky. He's fun.
- 52:29He does a lot of great stuff.
- 52:30But like, I don't think he was I don't think he designs his movies to be like
- 52:35deeply thought about and talked about and written about.
- 52:38I think he's very much an experiential person.
- 52:40Would you like show up, experience it if it changes you great.
- 52:42But like the amount of people who just like fan over Lynch,
- 52:46that's what I grew up with.
- 52:47And it kind of ruined him for me for a long time until like I got a little distance.
- 52:51And now I can go back and watch and really enjoy kind of like his career.
- 52:55The movie that always stood out to me from Lynch was Eraserhead.
- 52:57Like in all of Lynch's movies, with the exception of like Dune and The Elephant Man,
- 53:02which is kind of where he tried to go super mainstream and it didn't happen,
- 53:05are like adolescent young male or adolescent male fantasies.
- 53:08Right. So Eraserhead is about what is it like when like you finally have
- 53:12responsibilities and you have to deal with the fact that like you're this giant,
- 53:16like sack of hormones that is getting himself into trouble over and over again.
- 53:20And then you get into Wild at Heart and like Wild at Heart is fundamentally
- 53:23just a fantasy from like it's like a person who buys swords in the mall
- 53:29kind of fantasy.
- 53:30Like I want to have a snakeskin jacket and I'm going to kill this guy
- 53:34because his because my girlfriend mom tried to have me killed.
- 53:39And like there's a scene where it really pops where he's telling the story
- 53:43to Lou about, I guess, the first time he had sex or person he had sex with.
- 53:46Right. Is the dark haired lady.
- 53:47And at one point, he said she was like on the bed bent over
- 53:51and there were there were semi automatic guns and stroke mags or something.
- 53:55Yeah.
- 53:56I was like, this is exactly like a 16 year old imagining being a cool.
- 54:00And he's what fucking is constantly defending her honor.
- 54:03They go to like a heavy metal show and he breaks out and sings Elvis
- 54:06after like beating up a guy who like, I mean, it's just it is just an adolescent
- 54:11male fantasy, and that's all like Lynch movies are until about Lost Highway.
- 54:14And then it begins to like transition into like later years.
- 54:16But overall, I mean, it's more fun.
- 54:19I can go back.
- 54:19I can't really watch too much of it in a row.
- 54:21It's very melodramatic.
- 54:22But but otherwise, like I think you give yourself distance
- 54:25from the group that thinks he's the greatest thing to ever create film.
- 54:28And he becomes a really enjoyable watch.
- 54:30He does a lot of interesting stuff.
- 54:31I think he also informs a lot of cinema that comes after.
- 54:33And so for that, I really enjoyed it.
- 54:34I like this watch.
- 54:36And as I mentioned, I watched this in the I watched this
- 54:40from the Toronto airport into the airplane.
- 54:43I sat next to a lady and I apologize in advance.
- 54:45I'm like, look, I'm going to watch something.
- 54:47I forgot, you know, I had seen a lot of my.
- 54:49You forgot about Texas style.
- 54:51I forgot about it.
- 54:53Luckily, you have headphones.
- 54:54It would have been much worse.
- 54:55But like I told her, like, hey, look, if you look over
- 54:57and you don't like what you see on my tablet, I will be happy to turn it off.
- 55:01She's like, I get it. It's fine.
- 55:02I'm like, OK, just let me know.
- 55:03Did you tell her you're doing it for a podcast?
- 55:05Yes, I did. But I don't think that helps.
- 55:07No, that's probably true.
- 55:09That's like an extra red mark.
- 55:11I don't know.
- 55:12So he's funnier than people give him credit for.
- 55:14He's goofier.
- 55:15Like, it's not as serious as serious as he kind of gets made out to be.
- 55:19But just the fact this movie won the Palmdale or the fact this movie was a nominee
- 55:22for Academy Awards is considered his like biggest commercial success up to that point.
- 55:26I think Elephant Man was probably the biggest one.
- 55:28But it's crazy to me that this was a movie like in 1990
- 55:32that ran in theaters and like had big name stars
- 55:36and like propped into like the like the consciousness the way it did,
- 55:39because it is super, super sexual, is incredibly violent.
- 55:43And those two things merge constantly through the whole movie.
- 55:46And like, you just don't see that.
- 55:47That is not stuff you see anymore.
- 55:49Right. Putting sex up against violence so much.
- 55:52Yeah, I guess like euphoria kind of did it. Sure.
- 55:54But not like this.
- 55:55This whole movie, like and I think all this period of Lynch,
- 55:58almost all Lynch movies feel like you walked into a room
- 56:01you weren't supposed to be in your scenes like, you know what I mean?
- 56:05Like you're again, like you're a young person and you get it like
- 56:07I'm going to be a dangerous, sexy person.
- 56:09And you walk into a room full of dangerous, sexy people and you're like,
- 56:11this is a lot worse than I thought it was going to be.
- 56:14I was not prepared for the consequences of this.
- 56:16Yeah, I do not believe that I am ready for this.
- 56:19I do have one question in regards to your assessment of the film
- 56:23about being a 16 16 year old mall sword owning a.
- 56:27I'm sorry to. Disappoint your feelings.
- 56:29No, I'm curious.
- 56:30What what kind of sword did adolescent tank own?
- 56:33Because we've had this conversation. We all had swords.
- 56:35So so I never I never had a I had a I had a pocket knife.
- 56:40That was it wasn't a switchblade, which is kind of a pocket knife.
- 56:43I carry that. I feel kind of cool.
- 56:46I never I never had a sword, but I was definitely sort of Jason.
- 56:49Many of my friends had so staff.
- 56:51Buddy of mine had like a big claymore brain.
- 56:53Oh, he was into that kind of world.
- 56:55Yeah. So you feel like a katana guy to me for some reason.
- 56:58I don't know why. I don't know. I come off like that.
- 57:00Yeah, I got that vibe, but maybe you're not.
- 57:02I had if I had to, I would want it to be like probably in the
- 57:06not a sword like the Mace territory.
- 57:08That seems fun.
- 57:09Very medieval weapon.
- 57:10Yeah, it would be would be good.
- 57:12The Japanese style. God bless it. Good for them.
- 57:14But like, it's just not me.
- 57:15I'm more of a cudgel. You know.
- 57:17I want to meet a flail person.
- 57:19Like somebody who legitimately just has a stick with chain
- 57:23and like a spiked ball on the end of it in their closet.
- 57:26I just sitting on the floor because how do you support a flail
- 57:29and make it look cool on the floor?
- 57:31It has a hang. Yeah.
- 57:32That chain in there. Yeah. Right.
- 57:34This movie has nunchuck energy, though.
- 57:36It does. I mean, although like.
- 57:40I was listening to Power Mad on my way over here today,
- 57:43and it was very difficult not to just like stomp on the gas
- 57:48and like punch out my windows.
- 57:50Stab it and steer. Stab it and steer.
- 57:52I fucking love that line.
- 57:53The language in this movie still excites me.
- 57:56Like just the way they talk about things is like I don't hear
- 57:59anybody ever say things like that.
- 58:01Because like the whole thing, you're right, Tank.
- 58:02It's like very melodramatic. It feels so poppery.
- 58:05It feels like this could be a TV show.
- 58:07You know, not shocking with David Lynch.
- 58:08But like there's something about the language
- 58:10that really does drive the entire thing
- 58:12and keep it moving in a fun, interesting way.
- 58:15I think it's the fantasy thing. It is a fantasy.
- 58:17And some of it's by the way, some of it's really, really sexy.
- 58:19That's the thing about the show.
- 58:20Like Laura Dern is on fire. Oh, yeah.
- 58:23Like if you only know Jurassic Park on Laura Dern,
- 58:26you would never have known that she had this whole.
- 58:29She's like four time buttoned up mom and that.
- 58:32And this is the total opposite.
- 58:34Yeah, like she's just manic.
- 58:36But she she owns every scene she's in.
- 58:38Like the chemistry between her and Cage is it's insane.
- 58:41Outstanding.
- 58:42Like I just not seen to like performance
- 58:45have like that kind of sexual chemistry.
- 58:46And I think that's what it is.
- 58:47It's like it does fall into a very fun place.
- 58:49It rockets. It moves forward.
- 58:50It's kind of pulpy. It's kind of new.
- 58:52Are you like Lynch likes that kind of stuff?
- 58:55And they hit really like the line that always got
- 58:57other than the jacket, right? This makes it.
- 58:59I could have.
- 58:59Yeah, we he says, honey, you're giving me a boner with a capital O.
- 59:04Like the capital.
- 59:05Oh, that's the detail.
- 59:07Oh, yeah. It's a moaner.
- 59:10Yeah, I mean, it does make sense with that accent.
- 59:12And it's just so much fun to say.
- 59:15It's interesting, too, because everybody in that movie, no matter how,
- 59:18like Willem Dafoe is maybe one of the most horrible people to ever walk on screen.
- 59:23Oh, yeah.
- 59:23Oh, he's rough.
- 59:25He is the teeth alone in the teeth.
- 59:27But he is pain with the door open.
- 59:29Yeah, that's just coming straight in.
- 59:32And he's he's deplorable.
- 59:34You think? But but like he's really having fun with the character.
- 59:38Like he's really like in it.
- 59:39And he hits that that line between like real and melodramatic or like caricature.
- 59:45And that's kind of where everybody sits in the whole movie.
- 59:47So we got to talk about the Mr.
- 59:48Reindeer of it all.
- 59:50You you fixate on this character so much.
- 59:52It's a really weird character.
- 59:54It's a weird movie.
- 59:55It's it's like the wolf.
- 59:57He's a fixer. You know what I mean?
- 59:58But he doesn't actually do anything.
- 1:00:00He just like shits while some lady dances topless for him.
- 1:00:04Well, I mean, you got to have like a nice dinner party.
- 1:00:07I feel like you need that guy in between you and your contract killer
- 1:00:12so that you have it's just interesting to actually see him.
- 1:00:14Usually you see the contract killer, the more interesting angle.
- 1:00:17Instead, you just see this fucking strange dude.
- 1:00:19It sounds to me like Mr.
- 1:00:21Reindeer is the more interesting angle in your brain. Maybe.
- 1:00:24Well, I that's actually maybe the point is I kind of want more
- 1:00:26with Mr. Reindeer and I want more resolution around it.
- 1:00:29Like a Mr. Reindeer spin off series. Kind of.
- 1:00:31Well, so like more would ruin it.
- 1:00:33What happens if the hit doesn't work?
- 1:00:36Like is sailor just free to go now?
- 1:00:38Like the fucking silver dollar got paid.
- 1:00:41I mean, he kind of was free to go.
- 1:00:43Certainly, that's how it played out.
- 1:00:44But like, why?
- 1:00:46Because Bobby Peru blew his own head off.
- 1:00:49Isabella Rossellini went to jail.
- 1:00:51I don't want to cop out, but like I think it's unimportant.
- 1:00:54Right. He is a deeper layer in this disgusting world.
- 1:00:57Yeah, fair enough.
- 1:00:58And so like at the very top, you probably have Lula. Right.
- 1:01:01So Lula is probably of anybody the most sort of I don't say good.
- 1:01:06But I got the cleanest conscience.
- 1:01:07Yeah, it's the cleanest conscience.
- 1:01:08Right. So it's in the right boat of sailor.
- 1:01:10Weirdly enough. Right.
- 1:01:11Sailor has done some bad things, but he recognizes.
- 1:01:13OK, then you have like probably Diane Ladd's character.
- 1:01:16Pretty. No, I mean, Harry Dean's standing.
- 1:01:17Yeah, you probably got Johnny first.
- 1:01:19And then it starts to go down.
- 1:01:20It's just like the layers of like.
- 1:01:22And then when you get to reindeer, it's just animalistic.
- 1:01:25Like the hit people that reindeer pulls in are like, like lunatics.
- 1:01:30Right. Maniacs. Right.
- 1:01:31So he's like the layer between.
- 1:01:33So it's like Santo Santos. Yeah.
- 1:01:35Santos is right there above reindeer.
- 1:01:37But reindeer is the translation later down into like the real primal dark.
- 1:01:42The character I'm obsessed with is the one who has the least to say in this movie.
- 1:01:45And it's the one who kind of looks like Bono, one of the contract killers.
- 1:01:49Every time I see him, I guess that's it looks like Bono. Yeah.
- 1:01:53Looks like a young Bono.
- 1:01:54Kind of wish it had been. I did, too. I did.
- 1:01:56I am. It's not like an uncredited Bono.
- 1:01:59It seems like not.
- 1:02:01If it was like 1984, maybe it was Bono with a capital O, though.
- 1:02:04Yeah. Bono.
- 1:02:06Bono. Bono.
- 1:02:09But I think like the mechanics of like how that world works is less about like
- 1:02:13because like I was thinking about it because I watched John Wick recently
- 1:02:17and they do the whole coin thing. Sure.
- 1:02:18I was listening to another podcast and they were talking about
- 1:02:21what's the currency exchange rate for the coin?
- 1:02:23Because it seems like it's like killing a person is a coin and then also
- 1:02:27tipping your doorman is a coin.
- 1:02:29So like, what's the coin?
- 1:02:30And I was like, same thing with this is like it's just the mechanics don't matter.
- 1:02:33It's just kind of a cool flourish.
- 1:02:35And it's a way of like just showing a transaction is happening.
- 1:02:37There's rules in this world.
- 1:02:38But also, again, you walked into a room you're not supposed to be in
- 1:02:41and you're not going to understand.
- 1:02:42Yeah, it's also just like a timeless way of showing something's happening.
- 1:02:46Like Austin Powers, Dr.
- 1:02:49Evil wants a million dollars.
- 1:02:51Like that means one thing at the beginning of the movie versus the end of the movie.
- 1:02:55It's like one million dollars gets left out of the room.
- 1:02:59Yeah, fair enough. So the coin is a coin.
- 1:03:01But two silver dollars for two lives seems I don't know how that would
- 1:03:06inflation would affect that.
- 1:03:07But it seems like not too bad.
- 1:03:09They do seem to be living very expensive lives.
- 1:03:12And I doubt that, you know, the people who run the giant mansion
- 1:03:15with all the women take a coin.
- 1:03:17They know they have rent to pay.
- 1:03:19The electric company is not going to take a coin.
- 1:03:21I think what I really want, though, is like the secret life of Mr. Reindeer.
- 1:03:24I want that like TV series, you know, where it's just like
- 1:03:27whatever the fuck that dude is up to.
- 1:03:28It's never going to be as interesting as you think it is.
- 1:03:31Of course not.
- 1:03:32That's kind of one eye jacks in. Sure.
- 1:03:35And 20, right?
- 1:03:36It's like this. It's not him.
- 1:03:37It's the world, right?
- 1:03:38Because he would be ultimate. He's uninteresting.
- 1:03:40He'd just be taking craps and watching women's dance.
- 1:03:42Poppets, right? Right.
- 1:03:43So that show wouldn't be all that good.
- 1:03:45Great. It would be great.
- 1:03:46The old lady, I guess, is a brothel.
- 1:03:48The old lady that runs the high end brothel, she would be a really fun character
- 1:03:51because she has like one line and she just nails it.
- 1:03:54Just you're here to make him happy or whatever.
- 1:03:57So it's like, what is that world like?
- 1:03:59I think is what he kept continuing to explore.
- 1:04:01And he kind of touches on it in Blue Velvet.
- 1:04:03Again, there's this Frank, this really dark world that has its own logic.
- 1:04:07There's its own people and you get to touch on it.
- 1:04:10And then in Twin Peaks, I think he goes a couple of layers into it.
- 1:04:13I give you a little bit more of what would it like to be like,
- 1:04:15not just to walk into the room, but like live in that space for a period of time.
- 1:04:19Yeah. Unpleasant, by the way, is the answer.
- 1:04:21Yeah, it's like absolutely.
- 1:04:23It's a cautionary tale.
- 1:04:24David Lynch movies.
- 1:04:26Mother's hug, your children.
- 1:04:28I thought that was going to take a Nick turn.
- 1:04:33I was hot on the button here.
- 1:04:35I was like, I'm you.
- 1:04:37Nope. No.
- 1:04:38It was just a genuine nice thought.
- 1:04:41It's weird.
- 1:04:42How do you not wind up in a real life David Lynch film?
- 1:04:45I was thinking about this.
- 1:04:46It's kind of the last point open on that kind of world.
- 1:04:48So I when I was 16, I loosely had a lynching experience in real life.
- 1:04:53So I was going to be a dangerous kid.
- 1:04:56I was like, I'm going to sell drugs and get to know dangerous people
- 1:05:00and I'm going to be a dangerous person.
- 1:05:01So a friend of mine had a friend, a friend of a friend, and his
- 1:05:05he was going into that world.
- 1:05:07He was like 17.
- 1:05:08So he's like, I'll go find you like an ounce of weed or whatever.
- 1:05:11Like that's that's as dangerous as I was going to go.
- 1:05:12I was going to sell marijuana to high school kids in Oklahoma.
- 1:05:16So that's living on the edge.
- 1:05:18It is. So we had this like long night of like trying to find an ounce of weed.
- 1:05:21And we I just kept going into places with this guy.
- 1:05:24And every time I was like, I want to do this.
- 1:05:26So I went into one room with this like short stubby guy who was red haired
- 1:05:31and he had like a big enforcer looking dude behind him.
- 1:05:33And the short guy just said, you shouldn't have brought him in here.
- 1:05:36Get him out of here.
- 1:05:37And then like he stayed and talked.
- 1:05:39And then we went to this guy's mother's house.
- 1:05:41And it was like we walked in. It's 11 o'clock at night.
- 1:05:44There's a lady who has all the furniture in the middle of the room
- 1:05:46and she's painting and she's like tweaked out of her mind.
- 1:05:49And the mom is upstairs with like her boyfriend and like two children
- 1:05:53that are not there is like watching Mr.
- 1:05:55Giggles like it was like it was again.
- 1:05:57I touched into this world.
- 1:05:59That's the whole time I'm watching this movie.
- 1:06:00I'm like, and even like Blue Velvet, like like you want to be a dangerous person.
- 1:06:04This is what dangerous people are like.
- 1:06:06And like, I don't want to be a part of that. I don't want it.
- 1:06:08Yeah, it's like, oh, this is actually pretty scary.
- 1:06:10This is very gross.
- 1:06:10And I think the question always makes me think of the scene in Community
- 1:06:14where Troy gets kidnapped by air conditioning repair.
- 1:06:17Yeah, it's like, why is there a spaceman making paninis in the corner?
- 1:06:19Because we don't want anyone to believe you.
- 1:06:22Isn't that right? Black Hitler.
- 1:06:25Have you seen the movie that's going up against Wicker Man?
- 1:06:28I've not seen the Nicholas Cage version of Wicker Man.
- 1:06:31So you're the only person that's seen the other one.
- 1:06:32I have. And all I can say is that agrarian life in England
- 1:06:36seems very, very complex and difficult.
- 1:06:38You have to kill a police officer in order to make the corn crop.
- 1:06:41You got to do what you got to do.
- 1:06:42Listen, farming, small sacrifices.
- 1:06:44Farming is hard. Farming is hard.
- 1:06:46We'll need to eat.
- 1:06:47Yeah, I mean, that's such an old culture.
- 1:06:50I'm sure that there are very few nutrients left in the soil.
- 1:06:53So what's a cop here and there? Sure.
- 1:06:55Just to make the corn grow. Yeah.
- 1:06:57Also, you're welcome, England, for corn,
- 1:07:01corn and tomatoes.
- 1:07:02You're welcome. Yeah. And bees.
- 1:07:04They didn't have bees in Europe. He had bees.
- 1:07:06You're welcome, Darrell. Bees are a new world crop.
- 1:07:10No flowers, just tubers and all.
- 1:07:12That's tubers and gourds is already just a bunch of dick shaped shit.
- 1:07:18That's all you need.
- 1:07:19This explains so much of the Catholic Church.
- 1:07:24I mean, if you think about it, like,
- 1:07:25does anybody give a shit about Nicholas Cage Wicker Man?
- 1:07:27Like, like if you're like, if you had to delete one movie
- 1:07:30from the existence of like the world, it was Wild at Heart
- 1:07:34or Wicker Man. You keep Wild at Heart.
- 1:07:36I mean, I think we're going to debate that.
- 1:07:38But I do think to your point, like one like one has a much more
- 1:07:41cultural effect on the cinematic landscape.
- 1:07:44Like if the Library of Congress was like, hey, we're full.
- 1:07:47We can only let one of you in.
- 1:07:50Have enough room for Wicker Man or Wild at Heart.
- 1:07:53Yeah. Yeah. That's a tough one because the memes alone.
- 1:07:56Good point.
- 1:07:56Could could we exist in a world that didn't have not the bees?
- 1:08:01Well, also, the memes sort of do that back to the future fade out thing.
- 1:08:03And we just have to watch them go away.
- 1:08:05No, no.
- 1:08:08And you remember them, but you can never point at it again.
- 1:08:10Exactly. So empty.
- 1:08:13So I think maybe a heart.
- 1:08:15I think it probably is a lot more means that we think it does.
- 1:08:17Like it just is so old and it was pretty sure.
- 1:08:20So maybe my job leaving here,
- 1:08:23if I think about why I was brought in, is to start bringing Wild at Heart
- 1:08:27memes forward.
- 1:08:28So I think there's just enough and there's probably 50.
- 1:08:31I could cut out really, really easily.
- 1:08:32Oh, absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:08:33And the guitar sound.
- 1:08:35Certainly, you know.
- 1:08:36Yeah. Brown, brown, brown, brown.
- 1:08:39Choke, choke, choke, choke, choke.
- 1:08:43Incredible. What a great soundtrack. Absolutely.
- 1:08:46When I'm always going to talk about it because I fucking love it.
- 1:08:49When they're at that first Power Mad show and
- 1:08:53like you guys got some real good energy,
- 1:08:56just like Big E, Big E.
- 1:09:00Let me know if you follow this one.
- 1:09:02And like one note into the song, they're like, Oh, yeah, we know this Elvis song.
- 1:09:06Yeah, it's just wild.
- 1:09:07The thing that I asked Peter and I watched this last night and I was just like,
- 1:09:10OK, Peter's like, it's weird that this band knows it.
- 1:09:13And my thought was, it's weird that the people who paid money for this show
- 1:09:17are into it.
- 1:09:18Well, they're screaming like it's Elvis show.
- 1:09:20It's like that is that girl scream like the Beatles got.
- 1:09:23And it's yeah.
- 1:09:24So that's the fantasy thing.
- 1:09:25Like that is a totally that is a that is a 16 year old sitting in a trailer
- 1:09:29smoking cigarettes he stole from his mom.
- 1:09:31Playing with his guitar, fantasizing about singing Elvis
- 1:09:36and everybody being way into it.
- 1:09:38Yeah, just breaking down the show.
- 1:09:39Oh, yeah. And like the show and just lying to his friends about it.
- 1:09:43Like that was that was the whole movie.
- 1:09:45Yeah. Next thing you know, he's having sex on a bed with the assault rifles
- 1:09:48and skin bags and skin, which OK.
- 1:09:51Now, I've never like specifically fantasized about that.
- 1:09:55But part of it sounds pretty cool.
- 1:09:57Yeah, I know. That's the thing.
- 1:09:58It's like, well, I mean, like he's not wrong.
- 1:10:00Yeah, like, sure. OK.
- 1:10:02But like maybe two or three assault rifles and like they don't be loaded.
- 1:10:05Sure. Actually, probably best if they're not.
- 1:10:10I mean, you'd want to move them off to the side, wouldn't you?
- 1:10:11No. How do you go and check that clip before we do this?
- 1:10:13No, I want to like have to rearrange shit mid sex.
- 1:10:21Your gun is digging into my hip. Yeah.
- 1:10:25Yeah. I mean, that's fine.
- 1:10:28It's just just fancy. It's so much fun to this is like that.
- 1:10:31That's what that's what gives it its permission to be as dark as it is,
- 1:10:34is that at some point, it's just that this is all in like the like the id.
- 1:10:39And it's just this like flow and it can't stop.
- 1:10:41You know, it's just like a fantasy that's building on itself.
- 1:10:44And then the good witch comes down for some reason.
- 1:10:46Yeah. Oh, she's a bad actress.
- 1:10:48Do you hated her in Twin Peaks?
- 1:10:50I don't know why David Lynch likes her.
- 1:10:52I think it's because she's a bad actress.
- 1:10:53I think David Lynch just wants oddities to.
- 1:10:56Yeah, like he loves an oddity.
- 1:10:57Person. She just looks like a normal girl.
- 1:11:00Pretty odd. No. Well, fair enough.
- 1:11:03There is probably just a rolodex of people who are like,
- 1:11:06Oh, yeah, I'm free on Thursday. I'll come on down.
- 1:11:08I mean, yeah, that was to do this.
- 1:11:10I was we're not going to really fit you for this dress.
- 1:11:12You're just going to put it on.
- 1:11:13We're going to we're going to put you on some wires
- 1:11:14and you're going to say these lines.
- 1:11:16Yeah. You're going to read these from a cue card.
- 1:11:17You're a wild at heart.
- 1:11:21Yeah, the inclusion of the Wizard of Oz stuff
- 1:11:26still kind of gets me because it's not in the actual stories.
- 1:11:30Right. And it's just sort of out there.
- 1:11:33Like, what makes that the choice?
- 1:11:35Well, it's just so heavy handed, too.
- 1:11:36It's not like it's like a subtle like homage to the Wizard of Oz.
- 1:11:39They just keep mentioning it and just pulling the rules from it.
- 1:11:42It has nothing story.
- 1:11:44Well, that is to connect it.
- 1:11:46It's not like they're on the way of a way and ending.
- 1:11:48Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:51I think the only tie in to like the real thing
- 1:11:53or the rest of the movie is Bobby Peru mentioning Toto.
- 1:11:57I think it was Bobby.
- 1:11:58No, it was the guy who played a racer head.
- 1:12:00Oh, that's right. Yeah.
- 1:12:02When I said I had a dog, you pictured a dog.
- 1:12:06So that's that's like a beautiful lynch moment.
- 1:12:10Or like all the Texas people sitting out there having conversations
- 1:12:13like nobody's talking to each other.
- 1:12:14They're just like speaking past each other for everything.
- 1:12:17It's yeah.
- 1:12:18The characters on the side of the movie,
- 1:12:22like everybody in the background just really, really tickles me throughout.
- 1:12:26From, you know, the Texas size porno being shot.
- 1:12:29Yeah. The guy who just like squawks at the bar. Del.
- 1:12:34It definitely feels like a lived in world
- 1:12:35and where there's just more going on than the immediate. Yeah.
- 1:12:39They it's fun because like Roger Ebert hates David Lynch.
- 1:12:42But although he came around near the end, I think, but he like
- 1:12:45he hated this movie like, but he calls out a scene.
- 1:12:49And I when I watched it this time around, I really paid attention.
- 1:12:51It's where they blow the guy's hand off near the end of the robbery.
- 1:12:54Oh, yeah. And they're like just comic amounts of blood.
- 1:12:57And they're kind of like sloshing around in it.
- 1:13:00And the other guy's going, they can sell them back on now.
- 1:13:03They can do that. It's going to be OK.
- 1:13:04And the dog has it in his mouth
- 1:13:07and like runs off, which apparently is like a reference to like a
- 1:13:10a Japanese film or something like that.
- 1:13:12But like, it's just of course. Yes.
- 1:13:14But it's just like I like I that is the type of thing
- 1:13:18that I'm looking for out of his movies, which is like cutting the tension,
- 1:13:22cutting it because I mean, right after Willem Dafoe, like blows his head off.
- 1:13:26And I got an incredible.
- 1:13:27So that almost got this movie a an X rating. Oh, yeah.
- 1:13:31So it was right. It's pretty graphic.
- 1:13:33Yeah, it is pretty gross.
- 1:13:34That was the last moment.
- 1:13:35But the the MPAA, they added smoke post and post production.
- 1:13:40So you didn't see it come off.
- 1:13:41Apparently the original is much more violent.
- 1:13:42You just saw it pop right off, right off.
- 1:13:44And they were like, X rating. You did it, buddy.
- 1:13:46And they're like, all right, we'll put smoke there.
- 1:13:47Apparently that was like the.
- 1:13:50I do love this stocking trailing behind.
- 1:13:52Yeah, yeah. It's all.
- 1:13:56I would love to like take a movie and push it right over the edge
- 1:14:00and then just get the censor's notes and be like, all right,
- 1:14:03what can we do that has the least impact on the wildness of the film
- 1:14:09to get it just into like mass marketing?
- 1:14:12I mean, I think you need to see the new Toxic Avenger film.
- 1:14:14Dude, apparently that's unreleasable.
- 1:14:16The guys who created the first American pie, the director of that,
- 1:14:20he was talking on the blank check podcast and he was talking about how
- 1:14:24they had to get down to like remove one thrust from a pie fucking.
- 1:14:29And they're like, that'll do it.
- 1:14:30That'll put you back to an hour. So awesome.
- 1:14:32But this is the South Park story, too, like the original South Park movie.
- 1:14:36I don't I don't remember what the title was, but there's a bigger, longer on cut.
- 1:14:39Well, that was the one that was the compromise.
- 1:14:41They had another one they submitted like absolutely not.
- 1:14:43It's too sexual.
- 1:14:44And they came back with this one and they were like, well, bigger, longer
- 1:14:47and uncut significantly.
- 1:14:49So they were like, this is much worse.
- 1:14:50They're going to give us the first one.
- 1:14:51They were like, perfect. Nailed it.
- 1:14:53It's like, this is so arbitrary.
- 1:14:56Yeah. Well, they had trouble with the fractured but whole also.
- 1:15:00Yeah, true. It's a great game.
- 1:15:02Yeah. You can soft lock that game really easily.
- 1:15:05Yeah. What does that mean?
- 1:15:08Where you were like, you can't get you don't get soft.
- 1:15:11I got to stop agreeing with stuff so quickly.
- 1:15:14Wait, what?
- 1:15:14There's a when you get like your second power, if you if you go the stealth route
- 1:15:18or like the ninja route,
- 1:15:20the when you're supposed to use your like super move to like finish the tutorial,
- 1:15:23it doesn't give you enough power to do it.
- 1:15:24And you cannot complete the tutorial.
- 1:15:27It just breaks the game where you can't get out of the tutorial section.
- 1:15:30And if you say right before there, your entire game's gone.
- 1:15:33So take note, listeners.
- 1:15:34Yeah. Don't get soft locked.
- 1:15:36Don't get soft locked in only get hard.
- 1:15:38Hard luck. Hard luck all the time.
- 1:15:40This movie is still really, really tickles me all the way through
- 1:15:44just because every scene seems very full.
- 1:15:47Like there's an amount of content that you just consistently get throughout it.
- 1:15:53And so much of it is just also jarring.
- 1:15:57The transitions from scene to scene are something
- 1:16:00catching fire or somebody screaming or like everything is just like
- 1:16:04and we're somewhere else and we're somewhere else.
- 1:16:06And with my aggressive ADD, it's incredible because it keeps me focused down.
- 1:16:11So it's like, oh, I can't look away.
- 1:16:13I can't get like lost in a thought.
- 1:16:15But the characters are weird and they keep my attention.
- 1:16:19It it turns me around and I like it.
- 1:16:22Peter and I were talking about it before, like we started watching last night about
- 1:16:25it's like neither one of us is super into David Lynch.
- 1:16:28And I've enjoyed this movie every time I watched it.
- 1:16:30And I'm glad we watched in the theater the first time we watched it.
- 1:16:33But kind of going back and watching it for the
- 1:16:35I mean, I guess my fourth time now, but I forget so much of this film.
- 1:16:40Like I remember the large the broad strokes.
- 1:16:41I remember the like through line, but I forget all the little vignettes
- 1:16:44and all the little characters.
- 1:16:45And I'm always surprised and happy to see those again.
- 1:16:48Crispin Glover, who I always remember is in this movie,
- 1:16:50but I always forget how weird that scene is.
- 1:16:52And it does have the energy of a car crash.
- 1:16:56It actually seems more has the energy of the car crashes in the Blues Brothers
- 1:17:00because it just keeps coming and it doesn't stop.
- 1:17:02And when you think it's finally done, the one cop car falls from the sky
- 1:17:06and I'm here for it.
- 1:17:07So why do you think this movie should go through
- 1:17:10where it sits as like a film itself is like it's like a hugely significant movie.
- 1:17:15You know, it kind of ushers in.
- 1:17:17It's part of that group that ushers in like the next wave of like 90s movies,
- 1:17:20you know, so we're getting out of the Spielberg
- 1:17:2580s big movie kind of like popcorn movie blockbuster.
- 1:17:30And we're like, we're kind of getting sick of that.
- 1:17:31There's a bunch of corporate films.
- 1:17:33And then like at the end of the 80s and 90s, you get like Wild at Heart,
- 1:17:37true romance, you get natural born killers,
- 1:17:41then Reservoir Dog shows up, Pulp Fiction, then we're off.
- 1:17:44Then we're like firmly in the violent grungy 90s era.
- 1:17:48You know, we're making Fight Club.
- 1:17:50We're doing all that kind of fun stuff.
- 1:17:52So as a transition, like this is like Nicolas Cage
- 1:17:56as a part of an ensemble cast, like ushering in an entire
- 1:17:59like new genre of filmmaking.
- 1:18:02It's also maybe on like a cultural level, like again,
- 1:18:05because how it showed up at like festivals and ultimately how it like
- 1:18:09made its way into the consciousness.
- 1:18:10It's one of the most like impactful things I think he's ever been a part of.
- 1:18:13I don't think it's the best Nicolas Cage performance,
- 1:18:17but I think him being able to be like layered into such an erratic
- 1:18:21and insane movie and be the straight man essentially, or like the
- 1:18:26the heart of it to a certain degree, like is is fantastic.
- 1:18:29Because he's usually the wild card or, you know,
- 1:18:31he has all of it on his shoulders.
- 1:18:33And then this one, he's just part of this like massive bouncing chaotic machine.
- 1:18:36And he anchors it really, really well.
- 1:18:39It's funny.
- 1:18:40It's very physical.
- 1:18:41Maybe physicality wise, it's one of his best.
- 1:18:43I think he's in that lately, like when he gets like, I guess the rocker
- 1:18:47when he goes super action movie, it's not as much fun
- 1:18:49like when he's wiry and spastic.
- 1:18:51So, you know, he's doing karate kicks while listening to
- 1:18:53that heavy metal music and all that kind of fun stuff.
- 1:18:55So I just to summarize, it's a major transitional moment
- 1:19:00for film making in general to be pretentious about it.
- 1:19:02But it's also a a thing where he could have gone really, really far,
- 1:19:06but pulled it back to let everybody else go really far.
- 1:19:09So it showed that, you know, he has he has kind of layers and different modalities.
- 1:19:14Go watch weird movies again.
- 1:19:15You know, like there's so many like we got the polished like big film blockbuster.
- 1:19:22Like it was crazy to me that you said that you watched this
- 1:19:25in a theater with the other human beings.
- 1:19:27I cannot imagine, you know, when this came out,
- 1:19:29like as I worked in a movie theater for a while and people would just go to movies,
- 1:19:33especially 1990, when you couldn't really find out what a movie was about.
- 1:19:36You know what I mean? You just would go.
- 1:19:37You would just go and be like, oh, this I like Nicolas Cage and Diane Lange.
- 1:19:41She was my favorite actress when I was a girl and they would just go in.
- 1:19:44And like, I cannot imagine what it was like to just get hit in the face
- 1:19:47with this movie, you know, and like so if anything, it's like plugging the eye.
- 1:19:51It's really fun.
- 1:19:52It's kind of inspired me to go back and like start rewatching,
- 1:19:55especially the Lynch stuff and a lot of like the more complicated directors
- 1:20:00from the 80s and 90s, especially.
- 1:20:02So that would be my plug is like get back into that stuff
- 1:20:05because it's super, super weird.
- 1:20:06But it's also you can see how it informs the big stuff that we all like.
- 1:20:10You know what I mean?
- 1:20:10Like there's a lot of there's a lot of things that happen here.
- 1:20:13And this is a genre they don't make anymore.
- 1:20:15They don't make like Bonnie and Clyde, like violent kids on like fucking
- 1:20:19on the edge of the world movies anymore.
- 1:20:21But they seem to make them every two years from like 88 to like 98.
- 1:20:24And so like, yeah, have fun. Go back.
- 1:20:27There's a bunch. Watch True Romance.
- 1:20:28Watch Natural Born Killers.
- 1:20:30These are not great movies all the time, but there's some excellent.
- 1:20:32There's a great moments in almost all of them.
- 1:20:33And so, yeah, shit. Well, thanks, Hank.
- 1:20:36Thanks for being here. Thanks a lot. It was fun. Sure.
- 1:20:38If you want to get weird, this is a good movie to get weird on.
- 1:20:41I do thoroughly enjoy the weird category of this bracket. Yeah, me too.
- 1:20:45All right, so that was some pretty good conversations there.
- 1:20:49I think there's a lot a lot to be said, a lot of merit in both arguments.
- 1:20:54It seems to come down to me for a movie that has like a really bold
- 1:21:02performance by Nicolas Cage and a very lackluster world surrounding it
- 1:21:07to a very bold world with not a lack of
- 1:21:10luster, but a more reserved and directed Nicholas Cage.
- 1:21:17I mean, this goes to I think what we keep going back and forth on.
- 1:21:21What's the metric?
- 1:21:22There is no metric, though.
- 1:21:23Unfortunately, we screwed ourselves on that one every time.
- 1:21:26Is it about like how cagey Nick Cage is or is it about like the film itself?
- 1:21:32Yeah, some of that also is like, oh, which movie would you like to see?
- 1:21:36Yeah, some of that also is like, oh, which movie would you rather show somebody?
- 1:21:42And they're both great.
- 1:21:43Comfortably, I could show more people with her man.
- 1:21:46That's actually a fair point.
- 1:21:47Like it is a more boring movie, but I would feel safer showing.
- 1:21:51It's a more boring movie, but it's also hilarious movie
- 1:21:54if you go into it with the right expectation.
- 1:21:56Yeah, for that, like 20 percent.
- 1:21:57Yeah, like I'm never going to show someone the Wicker Man.
- 1:21:59I mean, you're going to love this movie.
- 1:22:01It's going to be outstanding.
- 1:22:03You're like, I'm like, this is going to be weird.
- 1:22:05You're going to go for a ride and you're going to question things.
- 1:22:07And I'm like, don't just just watch it.
- 1:22:09Yeah, Caged Dancer John watched both of these movies with me this time.
- 1:22:12And last night, after watching Wild at Heart said,
- 1:22:16Well, those were both pretty boring.
- 1:22:18Oh, ouch.
- 1:22:20Every movie has its own kind of audience that I would advise watching it.
- 1:22:27I would probably recommend Wicker Man more to the people.
- 1:22:32I'm unsure of like how cool they are.
- 1:22:36Yeah, they don't have a snakeskin jacket.
- 1:22:38But if I wanted somebody to see something
- 1:22:40that was just going to blow their minds, I would be more inclined
- 1:22:43to recommend Wild at Heart.
- 1:22:46Yeah. And if you don't want your mind blown,
- 1:22:48I don't know why I'd be talking to you.
- 1:22:50I mean, I would say Wild at Heart is definitely the better film,
- 1:22:53better directed, better written,
- 1:22:55and is the better performance by Nicolas Cage.
- 1:22:59It's much more consistent and good.
- 1:23:01Right. You just are outside of those like
- 1:23:06the jokes that are on the Internet.
- 1:23:07Yeah. So that's the kind of like a trade off you're getting for that.
- 1:23:12Do I feel like either movie holds more weight than a
- 1:23:16you have to have seen this movie to appreciate Nicolas Cage?
- 1:23:19No, I don't think the couple of jokes we make about Wicker Man
- 1:23:25need anybody to like watch it.
- 1:23:28That's a movie that exists outside of itself, like in the zeitgeist of his own
- 1:23:33because we've had the conversation with people like that's the worst movie ever.
- 1:23:36And like, have you ever seen it?
- 1:23:36Well, no. Then you don't know.
- 1:23:39Yes, it's far from the worst movie ever.
- 1:23:40It's far from his worst movie.
- 1:23:42It's far from the worst.
- 1:23:43It's far from his mid is either.
- 1:23:45Yeah, it's existing in that like sweet
- 1:23:4943 percent approval rating.
- 1:23:52Well, I think it has like a 15 percent.
- 1:23:55But well, I think that's from people who haven't seen it.
- 1:23:58It's a 43 for us.
- 1:23:59I think what and Darrell kind of pointed out is just like that was just kind of
- 1:24:03the stamp or the start of like that very mid era of Cage.
- 1:24:07And I think this movie gets unfairly lumped into that
- 1:24:09because I expected so much worse from the film the first time I saw it.
- 1:24:13And I've enjoyed it every time I've watched it.
- 1:24:15What I'm saying is it's not a bad film and it doesn't deserve to be shat on
- 1:24:18as much as it gets.
- 1:24:20Well, yeah, it's not a bad film, but it's important to remember.
- 1:24:23It's not a good film.
- 1:24:24I didn't say it was.
- 1:24:26I just need everybody on the outside to know that we understand.
- 1:24:30It's a film.
- 1:24:31They understand it is a film.
- 1:24:33It's one of those films of all time.
- 1:24:37I think that Wild at Heart will elicit a much more extreme response
- 1:24:41to it from any viewer, whether they like it or not.
- 1:24:43And they will either love it or hate it.
- 1:24:46There is no I don't think there is a middle ground on that film.
- 1:24:49That's true.
- 1:24:50Yeah, I don't think many people walk away from it being like, oh, OK.
- 1:24:54Yeah, like I kind of think about it now as we're getting closer
- 1:24:56to the end of this, you know, we're going to do a head to head
- 1:24:59viewing of these movies, a double feature somewhere locally
- 1:25:02and have people come watch these movies with us and thinking about like
- 1:25:06would Wild at Heart get audience reaction versus Wicker Man?
- 1:25:10I think it really does.
- 1:25:11I think it's a more interesting one to stage a screening of.
- 1:25:15Actually, to tie what you said about it being
- 1:25:18what Daryl said about it being kind of like that
- 1:25:22pivoting point in Nicolas Cage's career, where things went to the mid
- 1:25:27and what Tank said about being a pivotal point in film
- 1:25:32where a lot of film was changing into this kind of like
- 1:25:36hyper graphic, like fantasy testosterone driven stories.
- 1:25:42One of those outcomes is more interesting
- 1:25:46if we have to talk about like impact impact on cinema in general.
- 1:25:50Yeah, I think my bias is clear.
- 1:25:52So, yeah, like Tank said, it's a much more kind of sedate
- 1:25:57and grounding role for Nicolas Cage.
- 1:25:59I think we forget over time.
- 1:26:01Most people have forgotten how good an actor he can be.
- 1:26:06I mean, Pig isn't a over the top performance.
- 1:26:08It is a very, yeah, down to performance in a weird world.
- 1:26:13Not as weird as this, but it still kind of has that.
- 1:26:15It has its own rules. It has its own rules.
- 1:26:17So, I mean, by that metric, I think it's a better performance.
- 1:26:21And I think Wild at Heart deserves to be in the final
- 1:26:25the final rounds. The Master Eight.
- 1:26:27Yeah, obviously, I agree.
- 1:26:30Sorry, Daryl.
- 1:26:31Yeah, I know. I mean, like I appreciate Daryl's efforts, but.
- 1:26:35We fought a war to not have to listen to that accent anymore.
- 1:26:37I love those conspiracy theories or truths. Yeah.
- 1:26:46Those deep truths.
- 1:26:47Wild at Heart is just such a terrific film.
- 1:26:50It's a terrific ride to go on.
- 1:26:53And if you want to like see film
- 1:26:56that's not produced the way you watch film now,
- 1:27:01this is a good piece of cinema to go back and be like,
- 1:27:04people did some weird ass shit.
- 1:27:06Maybe if there's enough interest in it, we see some weird ass shit again.
- 1:27:10I mean, I would love to see weird shit done by modern.
- 1:27:14I mean, like, look at Mandy.
- 1:27:15That's some weird shit. Yeah.
- 1:27:17And that's modern. And that's good.
- 1:27:19I would love to see more shit like Mandy.
- 1:27:22Yep. Yeah.
- 1:27:22I feel like there's a real issue with the industry right now.
- 1:27:25We don't need to get into this too deeply, but it's just like
- 1:27:28everything has to make a billion dollars.
- 1:27:30It's got to be an avatar. It's got to be a marvel.
- 1:27:32You know, it's got to be all these things.
- 1:27:33It's like there should still be a space for a buddy comedy.
- 1:27:37There should be a space for this kind of thing, you know, where it's like,
- 1:27:41that's weird.
- 1:27:41And I spent, you know, 90 minutes or whatever it is,
- 1:27:44having a great fucking time and I'm thinking about it.
- 1:27:47Well, I feel like Nick Cage is at a point in his career again,
- 1:27:49where that's what he's doing, because I'm just looking at the poster up there.
- 1:27:53Pig is weird. Mandy weird color out of space.
- 1:27:57Weird, not big box office films, but, you know, someone out there
- 1:28:01still making these movies and they're casting Nick Cage in them.
- 1:28:03Right. Yeah. Yeah. He's tied to it.
- 1:28:04You're right. And that's a really cool fucking thing.
- 1:28:06You know, you think about this guy who's been a megastar
- 1:28:09and he's he's hitching his horse to what we're talking about,
- 1:28:13which is like, let's make movies fucking fun and interesting again.
- 1:28:16They don't have the weight of massive talent.
- 1:28:18Long legs, dream scenario.
- 1:28:19All these things. You're right.
- 1:28:20About long legs.
- 1:28:21It's incredible how much of a lasting impact.
- 1:28:25Like, I still talk to people online who are like, yeah, I love it.
- 1:28:29I keep going back to watching it and it's like, fuck yeah, dude.
- 1:28:31Yeah, it's great. It's weird. It's a weird choice.
- 1:28:33It's a weird performance.
- 1:28:35And we don't get a lot of film for that niche.
- 1:28:39I'm glad Nicholas Cage is doing it.
- 1:28:40It's cool to have someone with clout like he has backing that kind of stuff.
- 1:28:44It's like, here's hoping we get more of it.
- 1:28:47All right. Wild at heart. Wild at heart.
- 1:28:50Very enthusiastic. Wild at heart.
- 1:28:55Yeah. If you want to support us, thank you for listening.
- 1:28:57We are on social media at Cage underscore match underscore pod.
- 1:29:00We are on Patreon at Cage match pod.
- 1:29:02If you do want to give us money, which is a wild thing to do,
- 1:29:06we will put this in your heart. Yeah. Trust your heart.
- 1:29:09I'm going to make a T-shirt, I think.
- 1:29:11Well, I'm going to make a couple of T-shirts.
- 1:29:12Some of them are going to be more appropriate or inappropriate than others.
- 1:29:16But special thanks to our Sparkle buddies, Josh, Sean, Josie, Rico,
- 1:29:20Matt, Adam and Bill, and to our cage dancers, Ira, John, Freeman,
- 1:29:23Lance and Nathan and Cameron. Sorry, Cameron.
- 1:29:26I almost fucked it up. I don't have anything else.
- 1:29:28Bye. Bye.
- 1:29:37Bye. Bye.
- 1:29:41Oh, here we go.
- 1:29:43Who knows?
- 1:29:46It just needed to go for all the listeners.
- 1:29:49The the the hum or the crackle
- 1:29:53that's been in our ears for the last 45 minutes just stopped.
- 1:29:55So I kind of miss it. Yeah.
- 1:29:57Yeah. It's like when the hiccups go away. Yeah.
- 1:30:00Yeah. Exactly.
- 1:30:01Shake the table.
- 1:30:02All right.
- 1:30:02Now I'm concerned that the humming's left our headphones
- 1:30:05and just entered the recording.
- 1:30:07Stop everything. Check the recording.
