1:54
SPEAKER_01: Happy Thanksgiving.
1:55
SPEAKER_00: Happy Thanksgiving, Parker.
1:58
SPEAKER_00: Oh, gobble gobble, you motherfuckers.
2:01
SPEAKER_01: Gobble gobble, motherfucker.
2:03
SPEAKER_02: Okay, real story though.
2:04
SPEAKER_02: Ever since our last episode, we have been seeing turkeys literally everywhere.
2:10
SPEAKER_01: I didn't even put two and two together that this movie in Thanksgiving lined up perfectly.
2:17
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Thanksgiving break.
2:19
SPEAKER_00: Oh wow.
2:20
SPEAKER_00: It's almost as if there's some sort of like person overseeing all of this scheduling.
2:27
SPEAKER_00: It's incredible.
2:30
SPEAKER_00: A puppet master.
2:32
SPEAKER_01: Alice.
2:33
SPEAKER_00: You know, Caroline, uh, tell me, when you referred to turkeys uh in our last episode, what might you have been referring to?
2:44
SPEAKER_02: Uh Thankskilling, the musical.
2:48
SPEAKER_00: Well, also the movie, and where where can you go if you want to listen to our review on Thanksgiving, the cult classic Thanksgiv Thanksgiving horror movie?
2:59
SPEAKER_02: Our Patreon.
3:06
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, great episode, guys.
3:08
SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna say if I recommend it or not, but you're just gonna have to go there, watch it, and find out for yourself.
3:14
SPEAKER_00: Oh yes, and that's patreon.com slash scary movie pod.
3:19
SPEAKER_00: It's a blast.
3:20
SPEAKER_00: So see ya there.
3:22
SPEAKER_00: A real hootin' holler.
3:24
SPEAKER_01: A real hootin' annie.
3:26
SPEAKER_00: So, yes, yes, yes.
3:27
SPEAKER_00: Thanksgiving holidays.
3:29
SPEAKER_00: Not everybody celebrates Thanksgiving, but we're just cogs in the machine of you know, capitalism and selling patriotistic sentiments, and we just can't have a lot of America.
3:43
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like colonialism.
3:45
SPEAKER_00: So unfortunately, if you don't celebrate Thanksgiving, you know, no one's stopping you from watching Christy.
3:52
SPEAKER_00: It's not like she's a pilgrim woman with her boobs out running around.
3:56
SPEAKER_00: She you know, it's just the context of the movie.
3:59
SPEAKER_00: So still watchable if you are not a Thanksgiving supporter.
4:03
SPEAKER_01: About the only context or plot in the movie.
4:08
SPEAKER_00: Alright.
4:08
SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, so we are indeed we're watching a a film called Christy.
4:16
SPEAKER_00: And it's streaming for free on YouTube.
4:19
SPEAKER_00: When I sent our newsletter to our patrons, it was streaming for free on Netflix, and that has changed.
4:25
SPEAKER_00: So apologies there.
4:26
SPEAKER_00: And actually, this movie premiered on Lifetime.
4:32
SPEAKER_00: Lifetime in October of 2015 before hitting Netflix the next month.
4:38
SPEAKER_00: Can you believe that?
4:40
SPEAKER_02: That's crazy.
4:41
SPEAKER_02: Also, it's free on YouTube, and when the first ad came up, we didn't realize that the ad lasted 45 minutes.
4:51
SPEAKER_02: And we were sitting on the couch watching it on the TV, and I was like, Oh, we can skip the ad.
4:55
SPEAKER_02: And I was like, well, just wait a little bit.
4:58
SPEAKER_02: 45 minute ad.
5:00
SPEAKER_01: It's definitely not a free movie.
5:03
SPEAKER_01: But wait, you're not kidding?
5:05
SPEAKER_00: 45 minutes?
5:07
SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I mean you can skip it, but I just waited longer.
5:10
SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh, it'll stop.
5:12
SPEAKER_02: But it's a whole lot of I had to get up off the couch and click the skip ad button because it would have lasted for 45 minutes.
5:21
SPEAKER_02: So you know it's free with the price of you have to stand up off the couch and click skip ad.
5:28
SPEAKER_00: I have to say the placement of the ads in this movie, I I did notice it was not strategic.
5:35
SPEAKER_00: There were moments of like tension, tension, uh, ad.
5:39
SPEAKER_01: Unless it was strategic.
5:41
SPEAKER_02: That was strategic.
5:42
SPEAKER_02: Those people paid more for their ad to be placed right in that moment.
5:45
SPEAKER_02: And then the cheaper ones somewhere else.
5:48
SPEAKER_00: I guess maybe.
5:49
SPEAKER_00: I was really like uh getting some horror movie blue balls with these ads.
5:59
SPEAKER_00: Alright, so Christy was directed by Ollie Blackburn, who and we have not watched this on the pod, so you two aren't gonna have any idea what I'm talking about.
6:09
SPEAKER_00: But I was shocked to find out that this was Ollie Blackburn's first movie after he directed Donkey Punch in 2008, which, oh my god, that is just a time.
6:22
SPEAKER_00: Um, and I've uh blocked that from my memory.
6:27
SPEAKER_00: So moving on from Donkey Punch.
6:29
SPEAKER_00: And it was also written by Anthony Jawinsky.
6:33
SPEAKER_00: Another, just like, I'm like, how did this how did Christie happen with this collection of talent?
6:38
SPEAKER_00: It's very confusing to me because he wrote Vanishing on Seventh Street in 2010, and then after this wrote The Shallows in 2016, which is the Blake Lively Shark movie.
6:50
SPEAKER_01: Blake Lively.
6:52
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and everyone people love The Shallows.
6:55
SPEAKER_01: I don't think we've seen that.
6:57
SPEAKER_00: We have not.
6:58
SPEAKER_00: It was actually when we watched Deep Blue Sea, the Shallows was second place in our Patreon poll for what we would watch for our aquatic horror movie that month.
7:08
SPEAKER_02: So we'll have to watch the show.
7:09
SPEAKER_02: Well, I love Deep Blue Sea, but I also love Blake Lively, so that makes two of us.
7:15
SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
7:16
SPEAKER_00: For y'all, is that just a threesome?
7:20
SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's Blake Lively.
7:22
SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
7:23
SPEAKER_02: She would make me feel very self-conscious.
7:25
SPEAKER_02: It's Blake Lively.
7:26
SPEAKER_02: What's her husband's name?
7:28
SPEAKER_02: Throw him into the mix, too.
7:29
SPEAKER_00: Oh, Ryan Reynolds.
7:31
SPEAKER_00: Love Ryan Reynolds.
7:32
SPEAKER_00: I'll take a one-on-one with him.
7:34
SPEAKER_00: Alright.
7:35
SPEAKER_01: Um speaking of famous people.
7:40
SPEAKER_01: I thought the actress in this, what did I say?
7:44
SPEAKER_01: She looked exactly like a young version of I was thinking Dakota Johnson.
7:50
SPEAKER_01: No.
7:52
SPEAKER_00: She said it like four times in a row.
7:55
SPEAKER_01: She looks exactly like someone.
7:57
SPEAKER_02: Well, let's talk about her.
8:00
SPEAKER_02: Her name is Haley Bennett, and she plays the role of Justine.
8:05
SPEAKER_02: She was in The Haunting of Molly Hartley in 2008, and Swallow.
8:12
SPEAKER_02: That is a horror movie, let me tell you.
8:14
SPEAKER_02: You've seen it in 2019.
8:16
SPEAKER_02: No.
8:17
SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's it's it's actually like really good.
8:21
SPEAKER_00: Um do you want to know a fun fact about the haunting of Molly Hartley?
8:28
SPEAKER_00: Sure.
8:29
SPEAKER_00: I convinced my father to subscribe to Netflix for the very first time in 2008 because I wanted to order the Haunting of Molly Hartley DVD.
8:41
SPEAKER_00: And that is the first movie.
8:43
SPEAKER_00: Yes, that is the first movie I ever rented from Netflix, and it's not good.
8:48
SPEAKER_00: She plays the titular character, and so we have quite a contrast here.
8:53
SPEAKER_00: Haunting of Molly Hartley slash swallow smash.
9:00
SPEAKER_02: Uh we also have Ashley Green as Violet.
9:04
SPEAKER_02: She was in the Twilight Saga.
9:07
SPEAKER_02: Let me repeat, the Twilight Saga as the cool and spunky Alice Cullen.
9:14
SPEAKER_00: Oh wow.
9:15
SPEAKER_00: She a another turn as a cool and spunky girl in Christy.
9:21
SPEAKER_00: She has a type.
9:22
SPEAKER_02: I never would have put that together because like you just never get a good look at her face.
9:30
SPEAKER_00: Uh it's actually funny you say that.
9:33
SPEAKER_00: I don't know where I got this into my head, but um, I I feel like I give her press on this podcast all the time.
9:39
SPEAKER_00: But Julianne, my sometimes co-host, our monthly co-host on this podcast for an episode every month, she actually recommended this movie to me.
9:49
SPEAKER_00: And I nobody said this was gonna happen, but I texted her about three-quarters of the way through and said, When does Kristen Stewart show up?
9:58
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she looks exactly like Kristen Stewart.
10:01
SPEAKER_00: I thought Kristen Stewart was in this movie and she's not.
10:04
SPEAKER_00: So I the whole time I was like, is she going to do like a surprise appearance or something?
10:09
SPEAKER_00: No, she's just not in it.
10:11
SPEAKER_01: No, you're talking about the girl with the hood on, the hoodie.
10:15
SPEAKER_00: No, I just thought Kristen Stewart was in the No, I just thought Kristen Stewart was in the movie.
10:20
SPEAKER_02: Came up with that?
10:21
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was just waiting the whole maybe it's because it's called Christy, but the whole movie, I was like, Where's Kristen Stewart?
10:27
unknown: Oh god.
10:28
SPEAKER_01: But doesn't she kind of the hoodie girl?
10:31
SPEAKER_01: She does a little bit.
10:33
SPEAKER_02: She looks like any girl with a big thing.
10:34
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you can't really see her face.
10:37
SPEAKER_02: Um, okay.
10:38
SPEAKER_02: Also, credits include Lucas Till as a Aaron, James Ranson as Scott, and Matthew St.
10:47
SPEAKER_02: Patrick as Wayne, as well as Chris Coy as the man in the blue hoodie.
10:53
SPEAKER_02: Is he the one in the bathroom?
10:56
SPEAKER_00: I really can't tell.
10:57
SPEAKER_00: I tried really hard to uh differentiate diff diff differentiate the colors of the hoodies, and I couldn't.
11:04
SPEAKER_00: It's too dark.
11:05
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
11:06
SPEAKER_02: Alright, well, I'm gonna keep going here.
11:08
SPEAKER_02: There's three hoodies blue, black, and gray.
11:12
SPEAKER_02: Chris Coy is blue, Mike Seal is black, Lucius Fallick as gray hoodie.
11:18
SPEAKER_00: Fallick?
11:21
SPEAKER_02: Or phalick.
11:23
SPEAKER_00: Ooh, phalick.
11:24
SPEAKER_00: Uh I I want to say that the gray hoodie is the one that dies in the locker room, but I cannot be sure.
11:32
SPEAKER_02: I was like really into his body language acting in that scene, so that's why I asked.
11:39
SPEAKER_00: Body language.
11:41
SPEAKER_02: Body language.
11:43
SPEAKER_02: You know, he's like hyping himself up before he goes to kill her.
11:46
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
11:47
SPEAKER_02: Okay, moving on.
11:49
SPEAKER_01: The IMDB summary reads Quote When a college girl who is alone on campus over the Thanksgiving break is targeted by a group of outcasts, she must conquer her deepest fears to outwit them and fight back.
12:06
SPEAKER_01: The Rotten Tomatoes critic score is there is none.
12:12
SPEAKER_01: The audience score is 41%.
12:17
SPEAKER_01: And the critics' consensus is nothing.
12:23
SPEAKER_00: What?
12:23
SPEAKER_00: You know, I just I think this movie just kind of slipped under the radar for a lot of people.
12:29
SPEAKER_00: You know, like I said, popular creators, and I hadn't heard of this.
12:34
SPEAKER_00: I had seen the little like the little thumbnail on Netflix, but I don't know how everyone missed it.
12:41
SPEAKER_00: So I guess, I guess, like knife to my throat, gun to my head, we're just gonna have to give our own critics consensus.
12:49
SPEAKER_00: Consensi.
12:50
SPEAKER_00: There's just no way around it.
12:52
SPEAKER_00: So what do you guys think?
12:53
SPEAKER_01: A group of young filmmakers, whether this is accurate or not, that have chops and their hands on some red cameras, take to the streets of the campus and shoot a beautifully shot film with a hybrid, a Walmart combo of horror movie classic shots.
13:28
SPEAKER_01: Basically, a group of friends get together.
13:32
SPEAKER_00: I'm going to have to subscribe to Rosetta Stone because I need a translation for this.
13:37
SPEAKER_02: He's like, he's like like mad-living all of these words.
13:42
SPEAKER_01: A group of friends get together and shoot a film, and they use all the famous scenes from all the other horror movies and they throw it together with no plot line to create uh Chrissy.
13:56
SPEAKER_02: Go ahead, finish your thought.
13:58
SPEAKER_01: No, I mean it's an accurate critic's consensus.
14:00
SPEAKER_01: Parker was snapping for my consensus.
14:05
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
14:05
SPEAKER_00: Now, wait, explain to me.
14:07
SPEAKER_00: Is there a videographer terminology red camera?
14:11
SPEAKER_00: Or did they paint their cameras red?
14:14
SPEAKER_01: No, it's like a it's a it's one of the blue one.
14:17
SPEAKER_00: I want the red one.
14:18
SPEAKER_01: It's one of the industry leading camera brands.
14:23
SPEAKER_01: Uh huh.
14:24
SPEAKER_01: So like if you're if you're a rich kid with little with the ability to acquire, you know, like a I don't know, they they range from like fifty thousand to one.
14:36
SPEAKER_00: You are really projecting onto this director.
14:40
SPEAKER_00: Rich kid, a young, stereotypical.
14:44
SPEAKER_00: Um, I I could not tell you.
14:47
SPEAKER_00: I mean, this movie had a budget, I believe, of about six and a half million.
14:51
SPEAKER_00: So, I mean they didn't pull that together on their own, so I'm assuming that was funded.
14:58
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it it was shot really well.
15:01
SPEAKER_01: A lot of great cinematography.
15:06
SPEAKER_01: But the um yeah, the the the scenes were just like, oh, that's from this movie, oh that's from this movie, oh that's from this movie.
15:14
SPEAKER_01: It never ended.
15:15
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
15:16
SPEAKER_00: Caroline, what did you think?
15:19
SPEAKER_02: Um I had to break it up into three sections.
15:23
SPEAKER_02: I would say opening scenes, it felt like I was watching the anti-plagiarism commercial from any 1990s movie.
15:33
SPEAKER_02: Middle of the movie, I had hope for when this was really gonna ramp up.
15:38
SPEAKER_02: They were set in the stage, and then the end it was like enjoyable, but never really got to like that moment for me.
15:50
SPEAKER_00: Okay, so my thoughts, and this might be contentious within the group.
15:56
SPEAKER_00: I I think this movie has flaws, I have complaints, I have opinions, I think it's somewhat of a meh, but I watched this, I felt so excited, I felt inspired, I felt like I had theories running through my head.
16:11
SPEAKER_00: I had a great time.
16:12
SPEAKER_00: I had what some might call a ball watching this movie.
16:17
SPEAKER_00: I had a really fun time, and I really had no expectation of what this movie was, except that I knew it took place over Thanksgiving break.
16:24
SPEAKER_00: And I loved it.
16:26
SPEAKER_00: I I just had so much fun with Christy.
16:29
SPEAKER_02: I I would agree.
16:30
SPEAKER_02: I I think my consensus didn't necessarily wrap up my total emotions about the movie, but I was right there the whole time, and I kept thinking to myself, I used to stay back at Thanksgiving in college all the time.
16:45
SPEAKER_02: I always like volunteered because I was an RA and one person had to be on duty the whole time.
16:50
SPEAKER_02: And I always volunteered for Thanksgiving because like my family doesn't do a big Thanksgiving, so I was always that person alone on campus, and I thought to myself, if I were alone on campus during Thanksgiving and I watched this movie, I would never forget it.
17:06
SPEAKER_00: Wow.
17:07
SPEAKER_00: I mean, did you live in a dorm that was just a labyrinth of windowless hallways?
17:13
SPEAKER_02: Yes.
17:13
SPEAKER_02: I lived in Colby Hall, and that basement looks exactly like the basement laundry room of Colby.
17:20
SPEAKER_00: Was that the all girls one?
17:22
SPEAKER_02: It was.
17:23
SPEAKER_01: Colby Jack.
17:24
SPEAKER_00: Wow.
17:25
SPEAKER_02: Built in like the freaking 1800s.
17:27
SPEAKER_02: It was very old.
17:29
SPEAKER_00: Ian, that's where the girls lived that you knew you couldn't sleep with.
17:34
SPEAKER_01: Oh.
17:35
SPEAKER_02: You walk down the hallways and there's no windows in the hallways, and literally the lights flickered.
17:41
SPEAKER_02: And getting up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night because there were shared bathrooms, you had to walk down that long hallway.
17:48
SPEAKER_02: Scary.
17:50
SPEAKER_00: Okay, do you want to know what my I know I usually like to start with a thing that I like about this movie, but I like a lot of things about this movie.
17:58
SPEAKER_00: So I thought, do you want to do you wanna know what complaint number one is from me?
18:04
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
18:04
SPEAKER_00: This movie starts, and the way that I would describe the opening scenes of this movie is not how you would summarize the entire movie.
18:16
SPEAKER_00: There is this beautiful little monologue that goes over the opening credits of Christy that says, And I think that is the coolest horror movie I've ever heard.
19:09
SPEAKER_00: A group of like internet black web hacker killer cult people killing Christians to eliminate like organized religion.
19:23
SPEAKER_00: To me, that is like the coolest idea for a horror movie ever.
19:27
SPEAKER_00: And then immediately after those opening credits are gone, like, where did that concept go?
19:33
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
19:35
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think that they tell us a lot about Justine and a lot about like she is pretty, she is pure.
19:42
SPEAKER_00: There are things that they specifically do so that Ashley Green's character will think that she's rich, but religion is never a part of the movie.
19:51
SPEAKER_00: And at the beginning, kill God, and even a few lines that they throw out in the middle, like I think she says run to God at one point when she scares her.
20:00
SPEAKER_00: It's like, no, religion was never part of the equation here.
20:04
SPEAKER_00: Like, why was that your lead?
20:07
SPEAKER_02: So I had the question during the movie that I mean, I knew that it was supposed to be like hunting and killing Christians, but I think if they actually did play into that, this would be a huge like divisive movie and like the talk of the town.
20:28
SPEAKER_00: Uh well, let me know.
20:30
SPEAKER_00: Do you think you would have at least heard of it if they had done that?
20:33
SPEAKER_02: Probably, but I think there's there's not necessarily a way to like not make it campy.
20:44
SPEAKER_00: I guess I can see what you're saying, but I recommend to all listeners, if you have not already seen it, there's a documentary that I believe is on uh HBO, but don't quote me on that, called Hail Satan.
20:58
SPEAKER_00: And it's about the Church of Satan and how it's really not a religion, but like a political movement trying to push against the uh politic uh politicization.
21:13
SPEAKER_00: What's the word I'm looking for?
21:15
SPEAKER_01: Politization.
21:17
SPEAKER_02: Politicalization.
21:18
SPEAKER_00: Sure, yeah that of Christianity.
21:21
SPEAKER_00: They're trying to like directly dispute any time the Christian church is imposed on American government, and it's really fascinating.
21:30
SPEAKER_00: And like this horror movie to me was setting itself up to be the fictional version of that, and then I was just like, where'd it go?
21:37
SPEAKER_00: Like, I was really fascinated and excited for that.
21:41
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was a kind of a weird intro to be followed up by the beginning of the movie.
21:47
SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
21:48
SPEAKER_01: You know what I thought was interesting was what I really enjoyed about this movie was that uh it took a hot second to Actually, no, it took like probably two-thirds of the movie to accept that the killers were not supernatural.
22:14
SPEAKER_01: Or like that they weren't.
22:16
SPEAKER_01: I was like not wanting them to be like I didn't want this movie to go beyond human existence.
22:24
SPEAKER_01: So I was happy that they didn't.
22:26
SPEAKER_01: But there was an element of like they're not dying at the beginning, or like they're kind of like all over the place where I was like, How are they?
22:35
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
22:36
SPEAKER_00: Ian, you have successfully identified beef number two for me.
22:42
SPEAKER_00: That I think of all the final girls that we have examined on this podcast, I mean, obviously, I think Sydney Prescott of Scream is the most intelligent and incredible, but I think Justine really puts herself at the top of the list for being a smart, savvy, resourceful, and strong final girl.
23:06
SPEAKER_00: And it made me kind of furious that the villains in this movie are able to just no explanation, no everything.
23:17
SPEAKER_00: This campus is huge.
23:20
SPEAKER_00: If I were in this situation, I feel confident that, especially if I were her, I had keys, I had access to a lot of the campus.
23:28
SPEAKER_00: I feel confident I could have found a hiding spot and waited it out until morning.
23:33
SPEAKER_00: I think that was a real possibility, but somehow the killers are always on her tail.
23:39
SPEAKER_00: There is specifically a scene in the library where she pulls some smart shenanigans with setting a timer on her phone and throws it and gets away from the killers, runs up the stairs, no one in pursuit, and then she turns around and they are right behind her.
23:55
SPEAKER_00: And that is the one part of this movie where I was straight up mad, angry, because I was like, what the hell?
24:03
SPEAKER_00: So I thought they were going to be supernatural at that point too.
24:07
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and that's that's why I thought it was going the supernatural route where I was like, oh, this is just gonna be annoying because then she can't kill them, and you know, they're just gonna always be wherever she is, and they were.
24:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I think that was kind of the I get why that why they did that, but you know, it it it was kind of unrealistic, but I guess it's also a movie, so yeah.
24:33
SPEAKER_00: Something else that I think the or something that I think the movie does well is at the very beginning, I did kind of have to laugh because we find Justine, and she is reading this William Blake poem, Auguries of Innocence, which we've all heard, and is about kind of the clash of purity and evil.
24:57
SPEAKER_00: And so it's like, oh, uh do I hear uh themes being established?
25:05
SPEAKER_00: And not only that, but immediately there's this like montage at the very beginning where it's like academic scholarship, oh, she's poor.
25:14
SPEAKER_00: Oh, air quotes, I already got laid.
25:18
SPEAKER_00: You can go, oh, she's not a virgin working in the cafeteria, oh, she's poor.
25:24
SPEAKER_00: Like, there are just all these like things that are like, we get it, movie, she is not wealthy, like so.
25:33
SPEAKER_00: I think they were a little heavy-handed in establishing that she is not the girl, she is not a Christie, but then once everyone goes away for the break and she's by herself like dancing through the halls, and there's this really fun.
25:49
SPEAKER_00: I feel like the the soundtrack to this movie was also the soundtrack to my college experience.
25:55
SPEAKER_00: Because I mean, if this came out in 2015, I was a sophomore/slash junior in college, and so there is um what is it, the Tegan and Sarah song.
26:08
SPEAKER_00: Um that song, during that montage, I felt like I was like, okay, if I forget about what just happened, I'm actually getting to know her.
26:19
SPEAKER_00: Like I felt like her performance was actually good, and that the character development for her during this kind of opening montage after the the like eye roll montage, I was actually like, wow, like this is a character.
26:33
SPEAKER_02: Hmm.
26:35
SPEAKER_02: And I mean, who doesn't twirl around in an open field on their college campus?
26:41
SPEAKER_00: Oh, Caroline, don't tell me you did not do that.
26:47
SPEAKER_02: Uh, I also had a moment where she was sitting on her skateboard going down the long hallway, and I was like, if she is on a little tricycle, like the shining in this hallway, I'm going to throw something at this TV.
27:02
SPEAKER_02: But it was a skateboard.
27:04
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't think they were quite that heavy-handed in their references, but I do agree with Ian that this movie is, it does not stand out among the crowd of horror movies, slashers, home invasions, survival movies.
27:20
SPEAKER_00: It kind of has has every it's pretty standard.
27:24
SPEAKER_00: But I mean, you don't have to reinvent the wheel to be a fun movie.
27:28
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
27:28
SPEAKER_01: Right.
27:29
SPEAKER_00: I do want y'all's opinion.
27:31
SPEAKER_00: There is one shining moment, I think, one extremely effective moment in this movie when Justine goes to the uh gas station to get her like um Thanksgiving celebratory food and snacks.
27:49
SPEAKER_00: I found this sequence with Ashley Green extremely tense.
27:54
SPEAKER_00: I was like, I felt like there was a realism, there was like an element of like, I've been here, I've seen a person in a gas station or on the sidewalk that I'm nervous about.
28:04
SPEAKER_00: I felt like there was a really grounded and human tension here that was like visceral for me.
28:11
SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
28:12
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
28:12
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I had that same thought of like dropping the magazines, and then she comes over, and like you can feel that she doesn't want Ashley Green like close to her, and then even the checkout tension when they like start arguing.
28:30
SPEAKER_02: Very scary.
28:32
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
28:33
SPEAKER_00: I mean, w I live in New York.
28:35
SPEAKER_00: We lived, y'all lived, or at least Caroline lived in New York for longer than I did, and we lived together in New York for two whole years.
28:42
SPEAKER_00: I feel like we've told stories on this podcast before about seeing people doing weird things in the city, and sometimes it's funny, and sometimes it's more of like I have to keep my eye on that person because I'm slightly nervous that they might do something dangerous.
29:01
SPEAKER_00: And I really felt like that was effectively done for actually a lot of this movie.
29:06
SPEAKER_00: Um, obviously, I've never been on an empty campus chased chased by killers.
29:12
SPEAKER_00: Uh so I mean, as with any movie, it gets to an element of extremism and over-the-top ness.
29:20
SPEAKER_00: But I mean, I felt like at least the first bit of this movie did a really good job of like making me scared of the humanity of evil.
29:32
SPEAKER_02: I also think there's an element I mean, I I know that the fear is out there, like on bigger college campuses, they have like those emergency poles.
29:45
SPEAKER_02: And I thought it was really interesting that they put that in there where she's trying to use it because I think part of the fear in this is like the fear that like women walking around campus in the dark.
30:02
SPEAKER_02: I I just I if I were still on a college campus after watching this, I feel like I probably would think back to this and like be checking over my shoulder a little bit more often.
30:14
SPEAKER_00: And I I did I quickly wanted to know, I mentioned Tegan and Sarah.
30:17
SPEAKER_00: Another absolute bop.
30:19
SPEAKER_00: I'm a huge Lana Del Rey fan, which in 2020 is a little bit problematic.
30:25
SPEAKER_00: But there was, do you remember when every single person on the face of the planet was listening to this exact remix of summertime sadness?
30:34
SPEAKER_00: Let me list two more things for you that are I have one pro, one con.
30:40
SPEAKER_00: My con goes with the exact same complaint that I brought up earlier.
30:45
SPEAKER_00: A musical motif of the movie is one of the killers is constantly whistling Jesus Loves Me.
30:55
SPEAKER_00: You know that song?
30:56
SPEAKER_00: Jesus Loves Me.
30:58
SPEAKER_00: This I know.
30:59
SPEAKER_00: And I I just bring it back to my point from the beginning about where is the religious aspect of the concept.
31:07
SPEAKER_00: Why is he whistling this?
31:09
SPEAKER_00: It makes me really furious.
31:10
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I guess you could argue that just like she's not rich and privileged, like they want her to be, maybe she's not religious because we don't see it established, but they also didn't risk establish that she's not religious.
31:25
SPEAKER_00: So I'm mad about that.
31:28
SPEAKER_00: My pro though is, and maybe it's done to a ridiculous extent, but every single thing that happens in this movie is set up from the beginning.
31:41
SPEAKER_00: We got she's a swimmer.
31:43
SPEAKER_00: We know that she knows how to work a pool.
31:46
SPEAKER_00: And so she drowns that guy.
31:49
SPEAKER_00: We knew she had that skill.
31:51
SPEAKER_00: She's in a science class, we see a guy blow something up, oh, she knows how to blow things up.
31:56
SPEAKER_00: So when she blows up Ashley Green at the end, we knew that was gonna happen.
32:00
SPEAKER_00: Oh, her boyfriend has a recorder for no apparent reason.
32:03
SPEAKER_00: Maybe he's a journalism major.
32:06
SPEAKER_00: But he has a recorder, we don't know why, and comes in handy later.
32:10
SPEAKER_00: So at least, even if they don't give us explanations for everything that happens in this movie, at least they told us at the beginning it was gonna happen.
32:20
SPEAKER_01: True.
32:21
SPEAKER_01: Maybe he's just a creeper that like likes to document people saying things for future black male.
32:31
SPEAKER_02: I also had the thought, like, dang, I should really start running because if I ever get in a situation like this, I'm not gonna last a second.
32:41
SPEAKER_00: Oh, me neither.
32:42
SPEAKER_00: I can't walk up a a a case of stairs.
32:45
SPEAKER_00: And also, like, I really need to start practicing throwing myself off of tall buildings because apparently, uh, you know, practice makes perfect, and that building did not a thing to her.
32:58
SPEAKER_01: Headfirst.
32:59
SPEAKER_02: I mean, the trees broke her fall, but also that was a really cool shot of her falling through the trees.
33:07
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I totally agree.
33:09
SPEAKER_02: She stood up and ran a marathon afterwards, like nothing happened.
33:12
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I definitely think if you had fallen from that height, because they showed us a few establishing shots of the library, it's a big building.
33:19
SPEAKER_00: Uh, and so if you fell from that height, I definitely need to take a quick nap.
33:25
SPEAKER_00: But I do agree with Ian that this movie is really pretty, and I definitely felt during this, and you know, I don't always feel this in horror movies, but I definitely felt care and artistry being injected into the cinematography of the movie.
33:41
SPEAKER_00: So, Ian, I think that you are um a connoisseur of videography for us here on What's Your Favorite Scary Movie?
33:55
SPEAKER_01: My new title.
33:57
SPEAKER_00: There's one part of this movie ridiculous.
34:00
SPEAKER_00: Here's me crumpling it up, throwing it over my shoulder, nothing but Nette in the garbage can.
34:08
SPEAKER_00: When her boyfriend shows up on this campus, her lifeline, something that could have been meaningful, he shows up, sees just some rando running across campus in a hood, and goes, Justine, he follows her for no reason.
34:26
SPEAKER_00: He hears Justine go, uh well, what's his name?
34:31
SPEAKER_00: He hears Justine go, Aaron, and then he's like, uh, Justine, what's going on?
34:36
SPEAKER_00: Who are you?
34:37
SPEAKER_00: And then he stays and has like the like, show yourself, who are you?
34:41
SPEAKER_00: And I just like what?
34:43
SPEAKER_00: And then he gets killed because of that.
34:45
SPEAKER_00: I was just which I mean is sad.
34:47
SPEAKER_00: And then she has, I think when she crashes into that barrier and chooses to kill that guy over escaping the car, I think that is an emotional and well thought out, like that moment has resonance and is meaningful that she made the choice not to escape but to kill that guy.
35:07
SPEAKER_00: I think that's a cool moment.
35:10
SPEAKER_00: But setting that up by having this boyfriend do something that is completely fueled by idiocy is not something I appreciated.
35:22
SPEAKER_02: If you showed up and I came running and screaming after you and said, turn around and run, would you say, hold on just one second?
35:32
SPEAKER_02: Who is this random woman standing alone in a parking garage?
35:36
SPEAKER_02: I must meet her.
35:37
SPEAKER_01: No, I'd probably trust you.
35:40
SPEAKER_00: Hot.
35:41
SPEAKER_00: Ooh, who is this young woman wearing a hoodie?
35:46
SPEAKER_00: Caroline, this is exactly that meme of the guy holding that girl's hand and going, ooh, over the shoulder at the other girl.
35:52
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
35:53
SPEAKER_00: That is this moment in the movie.
35:56
SPEAKER_00: Now, you guys, I feel like there are some, dare I say, phenomenal entries into the book of horror movie murders here.
36:08
SPEAKER_00: And what might you say is the most memorable of these murders?
36:13
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there were a lot of good ones.
36:15
SPEAKER_01: I would I would have two for very different reasons.
36:21
SPEAKER_01: The first one, not chronological to the other one I'm gonna mention, is the bat with the spikes to the neck, obviously.
36:31
SPEAKER_01: Obviously.
36:32
SPEAKER_01: Um because that's just like a horrible way to go.
36:36
SPEAKER_01: And also, like, you don't I don't think I've ever seen a spiked bat um in any of the horror movies that we've watched.
36:44
SPEAKER_01: And I just love her her ability to be resourceful in the janitorial closet and and just build something.
36:54
SPEAKER_01: So I would say that is a very good murder.
36:57
SPEAKER_01: The other one is not because of what we see, but um just the the position she's put in because of such, which is when she goes to that idiot's house with a shotgun and he's an idiot.
37:17
SPEAKER_01: Most frustrating part about the movie for me because it's clearly an opportunity for um the movie to end right there, but it doesn't.
37:26
SPEAKER_01: And uh so I think when he is so stupid and walks out of his home and then he just gets dominated and then hung, I think that's a pretty memorable murder.
37:40
SPEAKER_00: I do have that little you're talking about Groundskeeper Scott, played by James Ransone, star of Sinister, who you can hear us talk about in last week's episode.
37:53
SPEAKER_01: Who I don't know what you guys thought, but you know, first time we see him in the scene when hot I thought he was obviously gonna be a part of this whole murder team.
38:06
SPEAKER_01: Um but alas he was not.
38:10
SPEAKER_00: You know, Ian, I feel like you're a little what is the safety version of hypochondriac?
38:16
SPEAKER_00: Like you're suspicious of everyone.
38:19
SPEAKER_00: You probably think that everyone in this this FaceTime is about to murder you.
38:24
SPEAKER_00: So I mean, I think trust anyone.
38:27
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, James Ransone, nothing against you, Ian.
38:30
SPEAKER_00: He just is not a trusting person.
38:32
SPEAKER_01: Did you guys not think that at the track and field that that that cameo for him setting it up for him to be a part of?
38:43
SPEAKER_02: I thought there was gonna be a second love wave of the movie with him.
38:49
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I definitely felt some sexual tension there.
38:53
SPEAKER_02: But I think Yeah, she walks in and all those candles are lit.
38:56
SPEAKER_02: You're like, okay.
38:59
SPEAKER_00: I think that I anticipated exactly what the movie gave, where I was like, oh, we've seen an explosion that's probably gonna come back.
39:06
SPEAKER_00: Oh, we've seen a swimming pool that's probably gonna come back.
39:09
SPEAKER_00: Oh, we see a groundskeeper that's probably gonna come back.
39:12
SPEAKER_00: I think that he was just another domino in my mental um bank of how she was going to be using things to work with these killers.
39:23
SPEAKER_01: So he had a goddamn shotgun and he still died.
39:28
SPEAKER_02: The poor dog.
39:30
SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
39:31
SPEAKER_01: He was stupid.
39:32
SPEAKER_01: That was such a frustrating scene.
39:34
SPEAKER_01: I know it's a scary movie.
39:36
SPEAKER_01: I know we're not supposed to judge it for the idiocy that scenes are, but that was just so frustrating.
39:43
SPEAKER_00: Well, let's take a moment actually and judge a little bit because I think we can judge.
39:50
SPEAKER_00: I wonder.
39:51
SPEAKER_00: She is clearly in a panic, as most of us would be if you'd been chased around campus.
39:57
SPEAKER_00: If you, you know, came into uh someone whose business is working on campus and you were in a similar state as her.
40:10
SPEAKER_00: I I wonder, one, how I would be treated by this groundskeeper.
40:14
SPEAKER_00: And two, if the movie is playing a little bit, and maybe I'm giving it too much credit, maybe I'm calling it smarter than it actually is, but like I think there's also a tension and a fear in this, like, he just does not believe her, and he's like, just calm down, let me go check it out.
40:32
SPEAKER_00: And she's like, No, you don't understand.
40:33
SPEAKER_00: Call the police right this second, right now.
40:36
SPEAKER_00: And so I think that there's also a lot of like emotional distress in that situation as well.
40:45
SPEAKER_00: That I felt like the movie kind of played to its strength.
40:52
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's definitely that element of I could tell he was trying to figure out if he believed her, but I still don't think it excuses the negligence.
41:00
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
41:01
SPEAKER_00: Caroline, what is your most memorable murder?
41:04
SPEAKER_02: Um, honorable mention to the pool because I thought that was a nice fight and cinematically very beautiful underwater scene.
41:16
SPEAKER_00: Yes, and I'm going to have to drain that bad boy afterwards.
41:21
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
41:22
SPEAKER_02: And I loved her confidence.
41:23
SPEAKER_02: She just like literally dove in to her first murder.
41:29
SPEAKER_02: Um but I think I'm gonna have to go with the shower bat nail scenario.
41:35
SPEAKER_02: Like I mentioned, I was really loving the body language of the guy, you know, taking off his jacket, hyping himself up, that whole thing.
41:46
SPEAKER_02: And they didn't like overdo the bat.
41:50
SPEAKER_02: It was one swing, got the job done because she was prepared.
41:54
SPEAKER_02: That could have turned into a whole like gore and blood scene, but I appreciated it for what it was.
42:00
SPEAKER_01: What I hated about that scene was actually her taking the mask off because I think it was like such a useless thing that we didn't need because there's no explanation to the face behind the mask, so why do we need it?
42:17
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because she puts a bat on, she puts it on.
42:20
SPEAKER_00: Sure, but like No, I understand what Ian's saying.
42:24
SPEAKER_00: Like, this movie's not a mystery, it's not scream.
42:27
SPEAKER_00: We're not trying to solve who the murderer is.
42:29
SPEAKER_00: In this movie, it's just like, alright, there's a person.
42:33
SPEAKER_01: I mean, I would if I was in her position, I would likely definitely take the mask off, but from the viewer's standpoint, it felt like the director was get letting us see who it was, not realizing that it's with no context, it doesn't it doesn't matter.
42:58
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
42:58
SPEAKER_02: I I I think it was just like a really nice moment of us realizing that like we she isn't watching a scary movie, like this is happening to her, and she's still trying to figure out why.
43:13
SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, beautiful.
43:17
SPEAKER_02: So I think it was just like a moment, like you said, like you would want to see.
43:22
SPEAKER_02: And I think it was more powerful that it wasn't like a remove the mask, and it's a big reveal, like it was her boyfriend's brother, you know, something like that.
43:32
SPEAKER_02: Like it really was just a stranger.
43:34
SPEAKER_01: Let's not forget it could have been her boyfriend's brother.
43:37
SPEAKER_01: We don't know because they didn't give us any motherfucking context.
43:42
SPEAKER_00: Well, Ian, I give you an LOL, and Caroline I give you an oh seeing the humanity in horror.
43:50
SPEAKER_00: I just you two look at you.
43:54
SPEAKER_00: The birds have wings, they have blossomed.
43:58
SPEAKER_00: Um, my most memorable murder.
44:00
SPEAKER_00: In this movie, is you know, obviously I'm outvoted because you both said the bat to the to the head, the spike bat.
44:06
SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think it's Ashley Green.
44:08
SPEAKER_00: I think similar to what you were saying, where they didn't make a big deal out of her hitting him with the bat, Ashley Green, I feel like she's about to launch into like a monologue, and she was like, boom, up in flames.
44:20
SPEAKER_00: I thought that that was kind of not only shocking, but exciting.
44:23
SPEAKER_00: I loved it.
44:24
SPEAKER_00: So I'm giving it to that murder.
44:26
SPEAKER_00: But like I said, I'm outvoted, and the hoodie that died in the locker room is the winner.
44:36
SPEAKER_01: I also will say that I thought it was interesting their choice to make.
44:41
SPEAKER_01: Every murder, there's a moment where Justine is reflective on the murder.
44:48
SPEAKER_01: Where she's like almost tearing up in a weird way.
44:53
SPEAKER_01: So I thought that was interesting.
44:55
SPEAKER_01: You don't see that often.
44:58
SPEAKER_00: You guys.
44:59
SPEAKER_02: Okay, just to wrap this up though.
45:01
SPEAKER_00: Wrap her up.
45:10
SPEAKER_00: Like, like I said at the beginning, Christy is obviously a play on the word Christian.
45:16
SPEAKER_00: And so, like I said, religion crumbled up, thrown out the door at the beginning of this movie.
45:23
SPEAKER_00: I am my name is Christy.
45:25
SPEAKER_00: What the hell?
45:27
SPEAKER_00: Like, make like bookending this with something that does not make any sense.
45:31
SPEAKER_00: That is, if I was mad at the beginning for not carrying through into the movie, fine, forgiven, because I enjoyed the rest of the movie.
45:39
SPEAKER_00: But bringing that nonsensical start back at the end, no.
45:44
SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, no, no.
45:46
SPEAKER_00: You're fired.
45:47
SPEAKER_01: Why would you also message the the group saying the basically that the job is not done?
45:56
SPEAKER_01: So come get me more.
45:59
SPEAKER_00: I can almost understand that because she's saying, yo, the jig is up.
46:04
SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm on to you and I'm sharing this.
46:08
SPEAKER_00: You know, the after that, there's this like kind of news report going on about like we've identified the victim has identified multiple sex in different city.
46:17
SPEAKER_00: Like, that's like, oh, I'm rising up, I'm fighting back.
46:21
SPEAKER_00: But the fact that she says, I am Christie, ooh, that doesn't bode well for me because if the movie was saying that this is like like that makes it seem to me almost like pro-church propaganda to an extent.
46:39
SPEAKER_02: I just had a thought though.
46:40
SPEAKER_02: What if she was saying, you know, she texted the group chat of terrible murderers and said that it's over?
46:53
SPEAKER_02: Do you think that by her saying I am Christy, that means that they're all gonna hunt her instead?
47:03
SPEAKER_00: As in like Christy isn't Christy is over, Christy is me, like stop your stop your um massions as in like uh I beat you fools, like come and get me, I am Christy.
47:21
SPEAKER_00: That's kind of nice, yeah.
47:22
SPEAKER_00: A sequel, a franchise.
47:25
SPEAKER_00: Uh, what would you guys say on a scary scale, one to five, how would you rate Christie?
47:31
SPEAKER_00: Two and a half.
47:34
SPEAKER_00: A diplomatic answer?
47:36
SPEAKER_00: A Christie answer.
47:38
SPEAKER_01: A very Canadian answer.
47:39
SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go three and a half.
47:41
SPEAKER_00: Ooh.
47:42
SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna give it a three right in between you two.
47:46
SPEAKER_00: I I think that we're all three tapping in on the same thing that i it it's a thrilling movie, it's an exciting movie, but nothing that's probably going to stick with me for too long.
47:58
SPEAKER_00: Would you give Christy a smash?
48:03
SPEAKER_00: Uh or a slash.
48:07
SPEAKER_02: I'd give it a smash.
48:09
SPEAKER_02: I'd watch this again.
48:13
SPEAKER_02: This is like a cozy up on the couch when you're home alone, just so you can scare yourself kind of movie.
48:23
SPEAKER_01: I would I would give this a light smash.
48:27
SPEAKER_01: I'd say the kind of the storyline is a little a little short, but the the cinematography of the movie pulls through, and also the fact that they didn't go paranormal on me really gets me happy.
48:47
SPEAKER_01: So I would say it's uh a moderate but very light smash.
48:54
SPEAKER_00: You know, I raise your moderacy and I give this movie a pretty hard, yes, hard smash.
49:04
SPEAKER_00: I I had a great time, and you know, we talk about Halloween movies that we have on our yearly rotation.
49:11
SPEAKER_00: We talk about Christmas horror movies that we have on our yearly rotation.
49:16
SPEAKER_00: I think that Christy has joined my yearly rotation as the sole Thanksgiving horror movie that I just might have to revisit in November 2021.
49:28
SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm on the same page as Caroline.
49:30
SPEAKER_00: I've watched this twice in about two weeks to prepare for this podcast, and I'm looking forward to in a year watching it thrice.

SPEAKER_00: No one's at my door.
50:32
SPEAKER_00: I did that whole thing just for Christy.
50:38
