- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, a podcast
- 1:00Speaker 4: that makes personal finance fun, especially on Fridays. It is
- 1:04Speaker 4: our favorite day of the week because I get to
- 1:06Speaker 4: get my team together to celebrate you our incredible She's
- 1:09Speaker 4: on the Money community. Miss Jess Ricci, She's here to
- 1:12Speaker 4: share our favorite money wins. Miss bechsay Ed is here
- 1:16Speaker 4: sharing hope broke tips. And we're going to be helping
- 1:18Speaker 4: to answer a money dilemma, which this week is all
- 1:20Speaker 4: about choosing between contributing to your super or saving for
- 1:23Speaker 4: a home and something that you slid into our dms
- 1:26Speaker 4: about whether you should still give a wedding gift if
- 1:30Speaker 4: you've already spent a grand on being in the brinal party.
- 1:38Speaker 1: And said no.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Anyway, before I get into that and we get Jess's opinion,
- 1:44Speaker 4: and I've thought no idea what it's going to be.
- 1:47Speaker 2: How are your weeks? My loves My Maek is really good.
- 1:50Speaker 5: I've started a new book series, and it's a fun
- 1:53Speaker 5: thing where you know what a book series is really
- 1:55Speaker 5: really good and you just carput it. I'm like carrying
- 1:58Speaker 5: my kindle, I'm brushing my teeth Holt and I was
- 2:00Speaker 5: curlling my hand this morning.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Read to me because I'm finally halfway through Iron Flame. Oh,
- 2:07Speaker 2: well done? What the series?
- 2:10Speaker 5: So it's for everyone, and I do not have very
- 2:13Speaker 5: high browd taste. It's a romanticy No, that's exactly what
- 2:16Speaker 5: we want, so ruthless boys at the Zodiac. It's a
- 2:19Speaker 5: spinoff from a series it's called Zodiac Academy, which, okay,
- 2:22Speaker 5: I will say Zodiac Academy not the best written series
- 2:25Speaker 5: I've ever read, but again I devoured it.
- 2:27Speaker 2: It was really good.
- 2:28Speaker 4: But this spinoff series, there's actually a lot of research
- 2:30Speaker 4: to say, the more intelligent you are, the less low
- 2:33Speaker 4: brow the comedy you enjoy.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Oh well, I must have a very good dread. Yes, yeah,
- 2:38Speaker 2: we are so intelligent.
- 2:40Speaker 5: Yeah, but I'm like, literally my Kindle is in my
- 2:42Speaker 5: bag right now. Every spare second I'm reading it. So
- 2:44Speaker 5: it's it's just so fun. I'm not trolling on my phone.
- 2:47Speaker 5: I'm just need it out a series. The only problem
- 2:49Speaker 5: is I was up, like very late last night.
- 2:51Speaker 4: I did the same thing. It's actually our who are
- 2:54Speaker 4: you reading? Literally I'm only halfway through Iron Flame?
- 2:59Speaker 2: You loving it?
- 2:59Speaker 4: Though?
- 3:00Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 3:00Speaker 4: Like I'm back into it, as I think most people
- 3:03Speaker 4: who follow me on Instagram. No, I was really into
- 3:06Speaker 4: that series and got quite frustrated when the series ended
- 3:10Speaker 4: and the book wasn't coming out, and so like I
- 3:12Speaker 4: literally pre ordered this book like it came out what
- 3:15Speaker 4: was it, January?
- 3:16Speaker 2: So everybody has read.
- 3:18Speaker 4: This book already, and like, I have not read any
- 3:21Speaker 4: other books this year.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Like I wish I could be like, oh my god,
- 3:23Speaker 2: I've read like four books or what? No, not me?
- 3:25Speaker 2: Not me, guys, like absolutely not.
- 3:27Speaker 4: My best friend read over one hundred books in twenty
- 3:31Speaker 4: twenty four.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Harry. I think I'm on track. For that.
- 3:35Speaker 4: It's actually insane really, like as in that's inclined about that, right,
- 3:39Speaker 4: that's like two full books at least a week.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that's insane.
- 3:44Speaker 5: Right, one of these books in a day, but like
- 3:48Speaker 5: completely possible if you are able to dedicate the time.
- 3:51Speaker 4: And I mean she's child free, so it must be
- 3:53Speaker 4: no totally because I am now in May, still trying
- 3:56Speaker 4: to get through one book that I bought in January.
- 4:00Speaker 2: So well, you know, while are you for sticking with
- 4:03Speaker 2: thank you? I have tried my best.
- 4:05Speaker 4: It is really good, though, so I'm looking for more
- 4:08Speaker 4: recommendations because I just like even the idea that I
- 4:10Speaker 4: have my Kindle on me, Like, I just like that
- 4:14Speaker 4: that's an option instead of like mindless scrolling totally. But
- 4:19Speaker 4: I have to be really invested in the series, like
- 4:21Speaker 4: I don't just it's like I can't be bothered wasting
- 4:25Speaker 4: my time if the book isn't gripping me, like I
- 4:27Speaker 4: just straight out, fair, straight out. So anyway, that's my story, Beck,
- 4:32Speaker 4: how's your week?
- 4:33Speaker 7: It's been really really nice. I honestly, I wish I
- 4:38Speaker 7: could tell you something juicy next Friday. If I don't
- 4:40Speaker 7: have anything juicy, I'm gonna I'll make something up for you.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Goodness.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Actually, I've got something juicy and it involves you. I
- 4:45Speaker 4: ran into your best friend at Kmart in Rosebud. Actually, yes,
- 4:50Speaker 4: that was coincidental, and we were talking about what she
- 4:53Speaker 4: was doing and she was sorry, live, but she was
- 4:56Speaker 4: buying slippers for a love interest. She's like, I'm just
- 5:01Speaker 4: gonna love Bomber and I was like, oh, that feels
- 5:04Speaker 4: like a book, like a page straight out of a
- 5:06Speaker 4: Begsited book. And she's like, I wrote that book. Like
- 5:10Speaker 4: if you taught back how to love just to love
- 5:13Speaker 4: a girls?
- 5:13Speaker 2: Yea.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Honestly, Jess and I talk about this all the time,
- 5:18Speaker 4: like we honestly should just be lesbians because you guys
- 5:22Speaker 4: are way cooler than us and the expectation in the
- 5:24Speaker 4: bar by you has been set up here. What do
- 5:27Speaker 4: you mean you just thought that the person that you're
- 5:30Speaker 4: interested in would love a fluffy, cozy pair of slippers.
- 5:33Speaker 2: So you click and collected them. That is really would
- 5:35Speaker 2: your partner? Ever? I don't think so, No, that's really
- 5:38Speaker 2: it's just like, it's it's how.
- 5:39Speaker 8: We all like girls, your love language, it's how we
- 5:44Speaker 8: do like even like if Victoria, if you said to
- 5:46Speaker 8: me like I really want some handwarmers and and next
- 5:50Speaker 8: time I see them, I'd be like, oh my god,
- 5:51Speaker 8: I'll buy this.
- 5:51Speaker 2: For you know what I mean. Yeah, it's just like how.
- 5:53Speaker 4: We think and you feel like you're aware of and
- 5:56Speaker 4: that's I like, that's is that how you say it? Just?
- 6:00Speaker 3: And do you like?
- 6:02Speaker 2: Growing up?
- 6:03Speaker 4: My dad used to be like, don't say me say
- 6:05Speaker 4: I like it would be like confusing.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Just and me are going to the shops. He'd be like,
- 6:09Speaker 2: Just and I are going to the shops. And now
- 6:12Speaker 2: I don't even know which one's right. I know when
- 6:14Speaker 2: you allow us me, I don't know. It's a great question.
- 6:17Speaker 2: It's a great question, and I don't think anyone knows
- 6:18Speaker 2: the answer.
- 6:19Speaker 4: So Just and I are very like that, yes with
- 6:22Speaker 4: each other, but not with our partners.
- 6:25Speaker 7: Yes, yes, And that's the thing is so like if
- 6:26Speaker 7: you have two women who are just naturally quite aware
- 6:30Speaker 7: of the people around them and considering, and it just
- 6:34Speaker 7: just so happens.
- 6:34Speaker 2: It's just like a very natural Orgaining straight is not
- 6:36Speaker 2: a choice. I'm going to stand by that, you know,
- 6:39Speaker 2: and not to say that some men are very the same,
- 6:42Speaker 2: but you know, luckily I am.
- 6:45Speaker 4: But that's why we need our girlfriends exactly, isn't it
- 6:48Speaker 4: just that's exactly why we need our girlfriends feel that
- 6:51Speaker 4: side of life, to talk about our books together, to
- 6:54Speaker 4: like talk about warm, fuzzy cozy slippers and do you
- 6:57Speaker 4: know what, I'm nourished.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It's fine.
- 6:58Speaker 4: I'm not actually complaining actually a little bit MBS.
- 7:01Speaker 7: That does remind me my best friend moved to Melbourne finally.
- 7:04Speaker 7: She was on the Peninsula and she's opening up a
- 7:06Speaker 7: gay bar in Futry North.
- 7:07Speaker 2: But exciting.
- 7:09Speaker 7: But it was very exciting. So that's kind of like
- 7:11Speaker 7: the only thing on my mind right now.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I'm just like yeah to the friends and of course, yeah.
- 7:17Speaker 7: Absolutely, it's a it's a safe space for well, I'm
- 7:20Speaker 7: sure she'll has she opened it. Yeah, girls again, yes, exactly,
- 7:24Speaker 7: exactly exactly when it does open, can we can we
- 7:28Speaker 7: go and can we take some friends?
- 7:30Speaker 2: Absolutely lives bar. Do we know what it's going to
- 7:33Speaker 2: be called? No? Nothing, we have no the update. You
- 7:38Speaker 2: have to keep this like, yeah, everything she plans it.
- 7:42Speaker 7: Of course I'll keep you guys posted. But yeah, the
- 7:43Speaker 7: name thing has really been stressed a lot of people out.
- 7:46Speaker 2: It's hard. It's hard. Business is hard.
- 7:49Speaker 7: Naming a bar is harder exactly, because you want to
- 7:52Speaker 7: be like classy but not too classy, and you want
- 7:54Speaker 7: it to be just one word easy. Yeah, something that
- 7:58Speaker 7: will look nice on Instagram, you know the esthetics I
- 8:01Speaker 7: already used. Sorry, oh silly, Yeah, okay, we'll go with Zella. Yeah,
- 8:04Speaker 7: that's okay, say less.
- 8:07Speaker 4: All right, Well, would you guys like another five star review?
- 8:11Speaker 2: Because I have one this week?
- 8:13Speaker 4: We are seen Beck and I recorded in an episode
- 8:16Speaker 4: the other day and at the end we said, could
- 8:19Speaker 4: you please leave more reviews because they obviously push out
- 8:22Speaker 4: algorithm and help new friends find us, which is working, guys,
- 8:26Speaker 4: it's working. We're getting some new friends. But then I
- 8:29Speaker 4: said you should also say really nice things about Beck,
- 8:31Speaker 4: and Beck said, oh I hate But so.
- 8:33Speaker 2: We have one and it's all about you. Are you ready?
- 8:36Speaker 6: So close?
- 8:37Speaker 4: Star review from somebody who used the name is actually
- 8:40Speaker 4: just numbers, so I'm not going to read.
- 8:42Speaker 2: That out perfect.
- 8:43Speaker 4: I love Beck, please, oh my god, never take Beck
- 8:45Speaker 4: off the show. She's so relatable and always says what
- 8:48Speaker 4: I'm thinking.
- 8:48Speaker 2: I love her. She's awesome.
- 8:50Speaker 7: Oh my god, that's the whole review by Oh my god,
- 8:57Speaker 7: it's so nice. I really do love this and if
- 9:00Speaker 7: I say that I don't.
- 9:01Speaker 5: I do.
- 9:02Speaker 2: I do get shy, but I really do love it.
- 9:05Speaker 5: Stop her your embodiment of you seen those videos going
- 9:08Speaker 5: around for it'll be like I'm so shy, and it'll
- 9:11Speaker 5: be someone doing something like crazy, like dancing on a
- 9:14Speaker 5: bar or whatever.
- 9:15Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, yep.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Karaoke first, that is really sweet. Thank you so much. One, two, three,
- 9:27Speaker 2: eight nine seven. I really that makes that very very sweet.
- 9:32Speaker 4: All right, Now moving into I guess the juice of
- 9:35Speaker 4: the show, Jessica Cheek, You're going to share our favorite
- 9:39Speaker 4: money wins.
- 9:39Speaker 2: What are they this week? Already? This week?
- 9:41Speaker 5: Firstly, I've got one from Christine who said she's paid
- 9:44Speaker 5: her car loan off this week. Old heir would have
- 9:47Speaker 5: used this as an excuse to upgrade and just take
- 9:49Speaker 5: out another car loan, but educated her knows that her
- 9:52Speaker 5: Toyota Corolla is going to last her forever and now
- 9:55Speaker 5: she's got one hundred dollars a week to put towards
- 9:57Speaker 5: paying off her credit card debt.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Instead that it's the mindset shift.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Yes, your whole mindset is shifting, and like that feels good,
- 10:06Speaker 4: and especially when you're able to identify it, like sometimes
- 10:09Speaker 4: you don't see that your mindset is changing, but she's
- 10:11Speaker 4: seen it.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Well done, Queen.
- 10:14Speaker 5: Next, I've got a money win from Brianna, who said,
- 10:16Speaker 5: money win. I've been away for twenty five days on
- 10:19Speaker 5: holiday and during that time I had my roundups turned
- 10:22Speaker 5: on my bank account. Totally forgot that she'd done it.
- 10:24Speaker 5: All of the spending that they did while they were
- 10:26Speaker 5: away on holidays left her with an additional five hundred
- 10:29Speaker 5: and twenty dollars in her bank accounts.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, it's cool. Also, how much spending were
- 10:34Speaker 2: you doing? No judge? She turned on like a higher
- 10:37Speaker 2: like yeah, five dog judgment.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Truly, I'm just like, ooh girl, like I have, like,
- 10:42Speaker 4: I think, fifty cents.
- 10:44Speaker 5: A way to make it work for you. Next, I've
- 10:46Speaker 5: got a money win from Olivia, who said, with Mother's
- 10:48Speaker 5: Day coming up, my mom sent me a Pinterest post
- 10:50Speaker 5: of some crochet potholders that she loved. Luckily for me,
- 10:54Speaker 5: I already had a stash of crochet cotton in her
- 10:56Speaker 5: favorite colors and the skills to match, so I whipped
- 10:59Speaker 5: up a set of three for her the handmaid. They're personal,
- 11:02Speaker 5: and best of all, they didn't cost me a cent.
- 11:04Speaker 5: I love that's handmade gifts. I feel so fantastic.
- 11:09Speaker 4: Yes, we would like to put in an order for
- 11:11Speaker 4: more of those Jess Biscuits.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Cookies. And they were very very good.
- 11:18Speaker 4: And this was what like two months ago at this point,
- 11:21Speaker 4: and we still haven't.
- 11:22Speaker 7: Stopped talking honestly anything. A lot of animal like feelthy.
- 11:28Speaker 7: I just hinke bye, and then I'm like, I like,
- 11:30Speaker 7: you know, you get that food noise, and then my
- 11:32Speaker 7: mouth orders and then I just it's.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Yeah, by do you guys like them? I'll definitely make you.
- 11:39Speaker 2: But the crotch I think incredible.
- 11:41Speaker 5: Amazing, very well done, Olivia. And then last of this week,
- 11:44Speaker 5: I've got money in from Angie, who said she saved
- 11:46Speaker 5: up for a ticket to see a theater production of
- 11:49Speaker 5: her favorite book at q Pak. She booked a bougie
- 11:51Speaker 5: hotel for the night so she have to drive home
- 11:53Speaker 5: from the city. It took her month to save up,
- 11:56Speaker 5: but she said she's so excited to be a queen
- 11:58Speaker 5: for a knight.
- 11:58Speaker 2: That is actually just sweep.
- 12:00Speaker 4: There is nothing like making an event out of like
- 12:04Speaker 4: one thing. If you're going to go go all out,
- 12:07Speaker 4: you know, because it's going to become a core memory.
- 12:09Speaker 5: And I think the theater is such a. I don't
- 12:11Speaker 5: know what it is about's extra fancy seeing a player
- 12:14Speaker 5: a musical. I go out and I'm like, oh, this
- 12:17Speaker 5: is like a night on the town.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Yeah right, I feel right.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Even if you just get dumplings beforehand or something, or
- 12:23Speaker 4: you're just like scoffing amusedly bar in your hotel room, Like,
- 12:26Speaker 4: it just feels good.
- 12:27Speaker 5: It's fun to romanticide life and and you spends like
- 12:31Speaker 5: five more minutes on your hair and makeup feel nice
- 12:33Speaker 5: as well. Absolutely for saving up and for something you want,
- 12:36Speaker 5: Like it's okay to spend on things.
- 12:38Speaker 2: One hundred percent. It is. It's about the journey, not
- 12:40Speaker 2: just the destination. Totally. That's it for me.
- 12:43Speaker 4: This week Gorgeous Love Miss Beech sayed, what have you
- 12:46Speaker 4: got when it comes to broke tips?
- 12:48Speaker 7: Yes, so okay. As usual, have two from the community
- 12:52Speaker 7: and one of my own. So this first one comes
- 12:56Speaker 7: from Lil. I think this is so clever, and I
- 12:58Speaker 7: mean I don't I don't just like small businesses, but
- 13:01Speaker 7: like maybe like bigger companies where it like doesn't really
- 13:03Speaker 7: matter at all. This is what Lil says. This is
- 13:06Speaker 7: super Povo, but f shipping prices, I'll spend over the
- 13:09Speaker 7: minimum to get free postage, then return the unwanted items
- 13:13Speaker 7: if you want to. If it's easy for you, you pay
- 13:14Speaker 7: with after pay. It doesn't cost too much upfront, and
- 13:17Speaker 7: then when it's refunded, it kind of comes off after
- 13:20Speaker 7: pay as well. So I think if you have the
- 13:23Speaker 7: money to do that, and if it's not, because it's
- 13:26Speaker 7: like sometimes like early nine.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Dollars you have to return it to you do have
- 13:30Speaker 2: to return it.
- 13:31Speaker 7: But often like if it's like you know aceos or
- 13:33Speaker 7: something that's double check.
- 13:34Speaker 2: They do free returns.
- 13:35Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, double check they do free that's actually a
- 13:38Speaker 7: good idea. Double check they do free returns because otherwise
- 13:40Speaker 7: you're like, oh, good paying h In some places, I'll just.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Take it out of like your refund amount.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Yeah, totally, just I really wish and I know that
- 13:48Speaker 4: this is like still paying for it, but just like
- 13:50Speaker 4: build shipping into the price, Like, yeah, so it's a
- 13:54Speaker 4: ten dollar item and you're charging me fifteen, but I
- 13:57Speaker 4: get free shipping.
- 13:58Speaker 2: I feel like I've won. You've won.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Everyone's paying for their postage. I'm not trying to find
- 14:03Speaker 4: a sneaky way around it, exactly, just gas like me.
- 14:10Speaker 2: This next one comes from Megan or Meghan, how.
- 14:15Speaker 4: Well, it depends because like different people might well exactly right,
- 14:18Speaker 4: different exactly right annunciations.
- 14:21Speaker 7: Meghan says, sign up for free pet food samples on
- 14:24Speaker 7: company websites. Example, Prime one hundred equals free pet food
- 14:29Speaker 7: Prime one hundred, Prime one hundred, Yes, good one. If
- 14:34Speaker 7: you can get free samples from them, cool, it's really
- 14:37Speaker 7: really cool.
- 14:39Speaker 8: Loves.
- 14:39Speaker 4: So I would say, you don't even need a sample
- 14:41Speaker 4: because I have the world's fussiest dog, but like, go
- 14:45Speaker 4: get that because that's not cheap, Like Prime one hundred
- 14:48Speaker 4: is not like some pedigree stuff that you can get supermarket,
- 14:51Speaker 4: like it's the stuff that you can only get at
- 14:53Speaker 4: the pet shop.
- 14:54Speaker 2: And it's annoying because it's like.
- 14:55Speaker 4: Good for them, but like good for them usually equals
- 14:58Speaker 4: more expensive, and then your dog falls in love with
- 15:01Speaker 4: it and you're trapped in a cycle of purchasing only.
- 15:03Speaker 2: That I don't even know cricket samples and stuff like that.
- 15:06Speaker 4: That's so it's nice until now you can also do
- 15:09Speaker 4: that with and I notice because you know, I'm a
- 15:11Speaker 4: gim Bro, so you like supplement new jim Bro samples
- 15:14Speaker 4: and stuff like that, you can get them from certain website.
- 15:16Speaker 2: You're too nice to be a gym bro. That is
- 15:18Speaker 2: really nice. Don't give vibes.
- 15:20Speaker 4: I'm so sorry. I'm so fine actually not allowing you
- 15:23Speaker 4: to identify as that.
- 15:24Speaker 2: That's so fair.
- 15:25Speaker 7: It probably also is the lack of definition and muscle tone.
- 15:32Speaker 2: You are looking buff. And also, thank you, maybe you're
- 15:36Speaker 2: just keeping your muscles.
- 15:37Speaker 5: Warm exactly him in an extra a little bit of
- 15:41Speaker 5: up exactly we're going into.
- 15:44Speaker 2: You're strong as hell. That's the sexy part. That's really nice.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Thank you so much. Oh my god, you guys. I
- 15:49Speaker 2: feel so happy.
- 15:50Speaker 4: I'm calling her girlfriend Jess to let her know that
- 15:52Speaker 4: I'm not, in fact hitting on.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Beck stating the truth. That's all. That's so sweet.
- 15:58Speaker 7: Well, thank you so much, and I hope you think
- 16:01Speaker 7: this is hotter what I'm about. Okay, Yeah, I changed
- 16:05Speaker 7: my brake pads over the weekend just because like that
- 16:07Speaker 7: was like something I was going to do anyway.
- 16:09Speaker 2: But then I like googled because I was curious.
- 16:11Speaker 7: To know how much pads and it's like, yes.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Something like you could change your own break path.
- 16:19Speaker 7: And I tell you what, it is exceptionally easy. It
- 16:23Speaker 7: depends what car you have, I think, but I just
- 16:24Speaker 7: have like a little toyot Echo, So it's very easy
- 16:26Speaker 7: for me. It's it's if you know how to change higher,
- 16:28Speaker 7: you have immediate access to your brake pads.
- 16:30Speaker 2: It is while you're there, you may as well just
- 16:32Speaker 2: do it. You know what I mean, You may as.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Well do it about changing if you if you like.
- 16:39Speaker 7: The annoying is when you watch like YouTube tutorials and stuff,
- 16:42Speaker 7: they don't often give you like they'll just throw out
- 16:44Speaker 7: words and you don't know what they need.
- 16:46Speaker 4: They do that in the finance community, yes exactly, Car Bros,
- 16:49Speaker 4: Jim Brows Crazy Investing.
- 16:53Speaker 7: Yes, So if you are watching a video and you're like,
- 16:57Speaker 7: I can physically see what they're doing, but they're using
- 16:59Speaker 7: a term that I don't understand, message me and I'll
- 17:01Speaker 7: run you through everything. But also the sorry, the main
- 17:04Speaker 7: point of that was that the break pads cost me
- 17:06Speaker 7: that just like it was four pads, it was like
- 17:08Speaker 7: two for each front. Oh yeah, okay breaks and that
- 17:13Speaker 7: was six nonsense.
- 17:16Speaker 2: I'm so just a super cheap order. Do you wander
- 17:18Speaker 2: sixty two dollars?
- 17:19Speaker 7: Really, but at the mechanic it could be like two fifty,
- 17:21Speaker 7: three hundred hundred exactly. So my broke tip is, let
- 17:25Speaker 7: me know, and I'll tell you everything and then we
- 17:29Speaker 7: can do this.
- 17:30Speaker 2: We're gonna learn together. We'll learn together. I'm obsessed with
- 17:33Speaker 2: this and that's me for this week. I love that.
- 17:36Speaker 4: All right, let's go to a really quick break because
- 17:38Speaker 4: on the flip side, it's gonna get juicy. Guys, we
- 17:40Speaker 4: are asking about whether you should be choosing between adding
- 17:44Speaker 4: extra to your super or saving for a home. And
- 17:47Speaker 4: then something that we've got no idea how Jess feels about,
- 17:51Speaker 4: is whether you should still give a wedding gift if
- 17:53Speaker 4: you've already spent more than next thousand dollars on being
- 17:55Speaker 4: in the bridal party.
- 17:56Speaker 2: So don't go anywhere.
- 18:02Speaker 5: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 18:05Speaker 5: money dilemma.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just

- 18:22Speaker 4: and leave us a short voice recording and you might
- 18:24Speaker 4: just find yourself on the show. Now, let's take a
- 18:27Speaker 4: listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 18:31Speaker 9: Hi guys, my question is around whether it is better
- 18:35Speaker 9: to salary sacrifice into SUPER or put that money towards
- 18:40Speaker 9: a home deposit. At the moment, I'm in a position
- 18:44Speaker 9: within my career where I earn enough to comfortably afford
- 18:47Speaker 9: to salary sacrifice into my SUPER and max it out
- 18:51Speaker 9: every year. At the same time, I'm currently saving for
- 18:54Speaker 9: a home deposit, and if I don't salary sacrifice into
- 18:59Speaker 9: my SUPER, expect to have decent to pose it together
- 19:03Speaker 9: within a year and could borrow a decent amount for
- 19:08Speaker 9: decent enough property. So my question is would it be
- 19:12Speaker 9: better in the long run to max out SUPER knowing
- 19:15Speaker 9: that it could potentially affect my borrowing power and delay
- 19:19Speaker 9: my savings goal, or wait until I have purchased a
- 19:23Speaker 9: property and then salary sacrifice into my SUPER. Thank you.
- 19:27Speaker 4: I have questions about where this information is coming from,
- 19:31Speaker 4: because if you're saying that that would decrease your borrowing
- 19:35Speaker 4: power to have more of an asset, I would politely disagree.
- 19:42Speaker 7: Maybe it's like the taxable income is lower if you
- 19:46Speaker 7: cancellary sacrifice is before tax. Maybe that's what they mean,
- 19:50Speaker 7: Like it looks like their taxtable income is lower.
- 19:52Speaker 2: I don't know if that makes sense. Doth sense? That
- 19:53Speaker 2: just makes sense?
- 19:54Speaker 4: Okay? Well, interestingly enough, you're saying, and like, let's just
- 19:59Speaker 4: say that you and I have had a chat. I
- 20:01Speaker 4: need to make some assumptions to have this conversation very cleanly.
- 20:04Speaker 4: So I sat down and this person is basically Jessic Artici.
- 20:08Speaker 4: She wants to buy a house, doesn't matter, like that's
- 20:11Speaker 4: just the goal, right. So we know you want to
- 20:13Speaker 4: purchase a home, and you're saying, should I be doing
- 20:15Speaker 4: salary sacrificing into Super? The question I have for you
- 20:20Speaker 4: is are you aware of the First Home Super Savior scheme?
- 20:23Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 20:23Speaker 4: It is a mouthful but a very cool program which
- 20:26Speaker 4: means you can salary sacrifice into Super and then pull
- 20:29Speaker 4: your money out after for your home deposit. And to me,
- 20:32Speaker 4: it is a no brainer that you would put your
- 20:35Speaker 4: money into a First Home Super Savior scheme to essentially
- 20:38Speaker 4: get more of a deposit so that when it comes
- 20:41Speaker 4: time to buy, like, you're ahead of the game. So,
- 20:44Speaker 4: if I make an assumption that you are on what
- 20:48Speaker 4: is known as the most popular marginal tax rate, which
- 20:51Speaker 4: in Australia at the moment is thirty percent, if you contributed. So, like,
- 20:56Speaker 4: let's say that you contributed the max amount, So you're
- 20:58Speaker 4: saying that you are contributed the max amount to Super already,
- 21:02Speaker 4: like as in, you can cap it out because you've
- 21:04Speaker 4: got cash flow, which is very sexy. The highest amount
- 21:07Speaker 4: that you can contribute on an annual basis to the
- 21:09Speaker 4: first Home Super Savior scheme SORR, it's mouthful, and I've
- 21:12Speaker 4: just got a lot to get out is fifteen thousand
- 21:14Speaker 4: dollars a year annually. You can do that up to
- 21:17Speaker 4: five years in a row, which means you could cap
- 21:20Speaker 4: it out. But like, let's say that you do that
- 21:22Speaker 4: over three years, so that means that over five years
- 21:27Speaker 4: you could essentially contribute up to fifty thousand dollars, which
- 21:30Speaker 4: is the cap of that scheme. So let's pretend that
- 21:35Speaker 4: you earn one hundred thousand dollars, because you've told me
- 21:37Speaker 4: that you have free cash flow, so I'm assuming you
- 21:40Speaker 4: aren't on like fifty thousand, because like that would be tight.
- 21:43Speaker 4: So let's say that your salary sacrifice contribution so is
- 21:47Speaker 4: taxed at fifteen percent inside the superannuation environment. So ten
- 21:52Speaker 4: thousand dollars times fifteen percent is fifteen hundred dollars tax
- 21:56Speaker 4: per year, and then your net contribution would be ten
- 22:00Speaker 4: thousand minus fifteen hundred dollars, which is the tax that
- 22:04Speaker 4: they cut off the top when it goes in is
- 22:05Speaker 4: eight and a half thousand dollars. But if you did
- 22:08Speaker 4: that inside your savings account, that tax would actually be
- 22:11Speaker 4: double because your marginal tax rate is thirty percent, so
- 22:15Speaker 4: therefore it's three thousand dollars instead of fifteen hundred dollars,
- 22:19Speaker 4: so you're able to contribute less. Right, So then if
- 22:22Speaker 4: you'd saved annually like ten thousand dollars outside of super
- 22:26Speaker 4: you'd actually be left with seven grand each year instead
- 22:30Speaker 4: of eight and a half. So you're going to get
- 22:32Speaker 4: well bang for your buck by putting it into the
- 22:34Speaker 4: First Home Super Savior scheme. And over five years, seven
- 22:39Speaker 4: thousand dollars times five is thirty five thousand dollars, which
- 22:43Speaker 4: is actually seven and a half thousand dollars less than
- 22:46Speaker 4: if you'd use the First Home Super Savior scheme. And
- 22:48Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure that if I asked any person purchasing
- 22:52Speaker 4: their first time Jess jessic Ricci, would you like seven
- 22:56Speaker 4: and a half thousand dollars of free money by following
- 23:00Speaker 4: scheme while saving for your first home, say less like
- 23:03Speaker 4: it is a smart scheme that puts you in the
- 23:06Speaker 4: right position. I would actually be also speaking to a
- 23:09Speaker 4: mortgage broker because it sounds like you have really high
- 23:11Speaker 4: cash flow. You're conflicted about whether you should be adding
- 23:14Speaker 4: more superannuation or you should be saving for your first home.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Get a plan like go speak to a broker, work
- 23:21Speaker 4: out what your borrowing capacity is, what type of deposit
- 23:24Speaker 4: you actually need, and all of that, because then once
- 23:28Speaker 4: your mortgage broker says okay, well again, I'm going to
- 23:31Speaker 4: use Jessica as an example, because I can't give personal advice,
- 23:36Speaker 4: just sits.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Down and says okay cool.
- 23:37Speaker 4: Like I've worked out that, you know, this amount of
- 23:39Speaker 4: money needs to go to my house deposit each month,
- 23:41Speaker 4: but I actually have one hundred dollars extra now to
- 23:44Speaker 4: quote play with, and I could decide that that goes
- 23:46Speaker 4: into my house deposit or it could go into SUPER.
- 23:49Speaker 4: You can choose whether you want to put it into
- 23:51Speaker 4: your house deposit to get into the property mark quicker,
- 23:54Speaker 4: or you could put it into SUPER knowing that it
- 23:57Speaker 4: doesn't impact your ability to get into your dream home.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Does that make sense? Yeah, jess what are your plans?
- 24:03Speaker 2: So I did I have used that scheme, I've capped
- 24:05Speaker 2: it out.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Ah.
- 24:06Speaker 2: I think it's a great one. Yes, somebody who suggested
- 24:08Speaker 2: that that you're so smart, so clever.
- 24:11Speaker 5: I believe that if you were salary sacrificing the cap
- 24:15Speaker 5: without the intention of using the scheme, because you can
- 24:17Speaker 5: also do that without salary sacrificing. You can make post
- 24:20Speaker 5: tax contributions as well. But I believe if you were
- 24:23Speaker 5: just salary sacrificing into SUPER without using this scheme, the
- 24:27Speaker 5: amount you can contribute is higher, So the amount you
- 24:29Speaker 5: could potentially reduce your.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Taxable income by is higher.
- 24:33Speaker 5: So it also depends, I guess, on what your goals
- 24:36Speaker 5: are specifically, because as you said, for me, it's all
- 24:38Speaker 5: about the house deposit, Like that's where my priority is,
- 24:41Speaker 5: Like all of my spare money is pretty much going
- 24:43Speaker 5: into that deposit, Like that's where all my funds are
- 24:45Speaker 5: being funneled. But I do understand that there are in
- 24:48Speaker 5: addition to the tax benefits, there's the compounding benefits as
- 24:52Speaker 5: well within Super, but you can also invest outside of
- 24:55Speaker 5: SUPER as well. That's also an option if you want
- 24:57Speaker 5: to take advantage of that. My personal take on it
- 25:00Speaker 5: is a year is not that long of a time.
- 25:03Speaker 4: If you're saying no, you can kind of use fifteen
- 25:06Speaker 4: thousand dollars worth of the first Home super Savior scheme
- 25:09Speaker 4: as well. Yes, or if you're smart, sorry to jump
- 25:11Speaker 4: in here. Finance May. Yeah, yeah, it's May, and it
- 25:15Speaker 4: is yeah exactly. It is the financial year. So if
- 25:18Speaker 4: it's May, you could put fifteen thousand dollars in today
- 25:21Speaker 4: and then come July the first you could put another
- 25:23Speaker 4: fifteen thousand dollars in, thus making it in a calendar
- 25:27Speaker 4: year thirty thousand dollars. But in each financial year you've
- 25:30Speaker 4: only done fifteen thousand.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Yes, totally, So I think, like to me, a year
- 25:34Speaker 5: is not that long to pursue one goal really strongly.
- 25:38Speaker 5: If you want to get into the house, you said
- 25:39Speaker 5: you could have your deposit within a year.
- 25:41Speaker 2: That's crazy and also really cool, really impressive.
- 25:44Speaker 5: My inclination would probably be to pursue that, utilizing the
- 25:47Speaker 5: scheme knowing that I'm getting the you know, some tax benefits,
- 25:51Speaker 5: but you also have to be aware that you know
- 25:53Speaker 5: that money is impacted within the super in the same
- 25:55Speaker 5: way that the share market is. So we've seen a
- 25:57Speaker 5: lot of volatility you know, recently with all the stuff
- 26:00Speaker 5: going on in.
- 26:00Speaker 2: The US wild also something I guess to keep in
- 26:04Speaker 2: mind as.
- 26:04Speaker 4: Well, totally, And I feel like that's I guess it's
- 26:09Speaker 4: so hard to say, Okay, well you should do this
- 26:11Speaker 4: or this my best advice. Honestly, go talk to a
- 26:14Speaker 4: mortgage broker. If you're buying within the next year. They
- 26:18Speaker 4: want to talk to you now anyway. They want to
- 26:20Speaker 4: prep you, make sure that you're using the First Home
- 26:22Speaker 4: Super Savor scheme. They want to make sure that if
- 26:24Speaker 4: there are any grants or schemes that we can apply for,
- 26:26Speaker 4: we're getting you in the door on that asap. Because
- 26:29Speaker 4: some grants and some schemes are capped, so they only have,
- 26:33Speaker 4: like you know, a couple of thousand people able to
- 26:35Speaker 4: use them. Therefore, I want to get your name on
- 26:37Speaker 4: that list asap. Like twelve months is not that long
- 26:41Speaker 4: of a period of time, So like, start having those
- 26:44Speaker 4: conversations now, because they're going to give you a cash flow.
- 26:47Speaker 4: They're going to help you be in the best possible position.
- 26:50Speaker 4: Any other additional thoughts before we talk about wedding drummer, No,
- 26:53Speaker 4: I was just going to say, why not both It
- 26:55Speaker 4: seems like this book can lost us like this money
- 26:58Speaker 4: coming in, does it have to be or the other?
- 27:00Speaker 2: You know what I mean? I wonder if they can.
- 27:01Speaker 5: Split a little goal out. That's a good point, Like
- 27:03Speaker 5: you could take taking a year to save your house.
- 27:05Speaker 5: To us, it take two years maybe, and yeah, double
- 27:08Speaker 5: dip that's what I'm thinking. It doesn't have to be
- 27:10Speaker 5: because Super is very hard to can be very hard
- 27:12Speaker 5: to access even if you have, like you know this
- 27:14Speaker 5: for some Super saber scheme thing going on. I had
- 27:18Speaker 5: worked in Super before, and I just know it's like
- 27:19Speaker 5: so much paperwork. So it's like if you split it
- 27:22Speaker 5: right down the middle, then you have access freely to one.
- 27:26Speaker 2: And also the other. But just without fair question, you
- 27:30Speaker 2: would you like would you like some juicy wedding gossip? Yes? Please?
- 27:34Speaker 4: Okay, So the DM we got this week is giving
- 27:37Speaker 4: all right, Hey, she's.
- 27:38Speaker 2: On the money. I need the community's opinion on this.
- 27:41Speaker 4: So my husband's in the groom's party for his mate's wedding,
- 27:44Speaker 4: and it's already cost us so much like the suit
- 27:49Speaker 4: Bucks night travel accommodation, not to mention all the time
- 27:52Speaker 4: we've given with organizing and running around. Now the wedding's
- 27:55Speaker 4: finally here, and he wants us to give to them
- 27:57Speaker 4: a gift too, And I'm like, didn't we already give
- 28:00Speaker 4: them enough? I know giving a present is the thing
- 28:03Speaker 4: people do, but we've spent more than a thousand dollars
- 28:06Speaker 4: already just for him to be a part of the wedding.
- 28:08Speaker 4: I don't think we should have to give anything else.
- 28:11Speaker 4: He reckons it's really rude not to, But like, do
- 28:14Speaker 4: people actually give a wedding gift after spending so much
- 28:17Speaker 4: money already? Or am I just being tight?
- 28:19Speaker 2: What would you do? Mm?
- 28:22Speaker 7: I don't think a gift is necessary, but I also
- 28:25Speaker 7: have I'm very lucky to have friends that are not
- 28:27Speaker 7: super traditional. So I guess if I was going to
- 28:30Speaker 7: a more traditional wedding and I wasn't like super good
- 28:32Speaker 7: friends with these people. It sounds like they are good
- 28:35Speaker 7: friends because they're in the bridle and groom party, But yeah,
- 28:37Speaker 7: I just couldn't. I just wouldn't, Like, I don't even
- 28:39Speaker 7: some people don't have that much money to spend anyway,
- 28:42Speaker 7: Like if you're invited into like a bridal party or
- 28:45Speaker 7: insanity can be very anxiety inducing being like, oh my god,
- 28:49Speaker 7: now I've got to spend all this money that I
- 28:51Speaker 7: it just was not.
- 28:52Speaker 2: In my future. It was not in my plan.
- 28:54Speaker 7: You have maybe you have every single thing lined up,
- 28:56Speaker 7: and any kind of like hump in the road or whatever,
- 29:00Speaker 7: like you're just not prepared for that. And then as
- 29:03Speaker 7: soon as a friend of yours is like would you
- 29:05Speaker 7: be my maid of honor or my groomsman.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Or something, and like it can be very anxiety inducing.
- 29:11Speaker 7: You might just literally physically not have the money to
- 29:14Speaker 7: even be part of that, but so you are, and
- 29:16Speaker 7: you do spend.
- 29:17Speaker 2: All this money.
- 29:18Speaker 7: I don't think a gift is necessary. I don't think
- 29:20Speaker 7: a gift is ever necessary, even if you're not in
- 29:23Speaker 7: the bridle or groom party. Just do whatever you can afford. Like,
- 29:26Speaker 7: if you go and you literally can, all you can
- 29:28Speaker 7: afford is a card, Just do that.
- 29:29Speaker 4: I think a card is really nice, right, I just
- 29:32Speaker 4: don't think you're putting wishing well, even just putting a
- 29:35Speaker 4: card in with like your thoughts, don't like write to
- 29:38Speaker 4: Victoria from back, like that doesn't mean all that much,
- 29:41Speaker 4: but like put some nice thoughts.
- 29:42Speaker 2: I would much prefer that thing. Same.
- 29:45Speaker 7: Yeah, absolutely, I don't think we should be forcing This
- 29:48Speaker 7: isn't even just like suggesting.
- 29:50Speaker 2: It's like weddings. Wild weddings are insane.
- 29:53Speaker 7: Yeah, it's almost you're almost forcing your friends to spend
- 29:56Speaker 7: money that they might literally not have. Like sometimes they
- 29:59Speaker 7: have twelve dollars to my name in total, And if
- 30:01Speaker 7: I had a wedding to go do that same weekend,
- 30:03Speaker 7: I would just be screwed.
- 30:05Speaker 2: There's no money there. What can I do?
- 30:06Speaker 7: You know, you either get alone, you go into dead
- 30:08Speaker 7: what do you do? You just should not be putting
- 30:10Speaker 7: that pressure on people. Absolutely, you don't have to bring
- 30:12Speaker 7: back I also don't know, you don't know.
- 30:14Speaker 2: I don't think a gift is necessary in no way, Jess,
- 30:18Speaker 2: what are you doing?
- 30:18Speaker 8: Oh?
- 30:18Speaker 5: I completely agree when you said I don't think a
- 30:21Speaker 5: gift is necessary.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Ever, I feel like that's such a true statement. And
- 30:24Speaker 2: I know that you're having a wedding to get gifts. Yeah,
- 30:27Speaker 2: And I know.
- 30:28Speaker 5: That there's cultural standards, yes, you know you have to
- 30:31Speaker 5: consider as well and things like that. But I think
- 30:34Speaker 5: particularly the expectation now in pre wedding activities, you know,
- 30:39Speaker 5: the bridle shower, the hens, the bucks, like, there's so
- 30:43Speaker 5: many things, so many opportunities, like it can be quite
- 30:47Speaker 5: hard to participate in all of them. I love when
- 30:50Speaker 5: people say, your presence is the present. Like, to me,
- 30:53Speaker 5: a wedding is about celebrating two people's life gifts. Nope,
- 30:59Speaker 5: there's no little ASTs. Get the It's just two people
- 31:02Speaker 5: coming together. Well on whatever scale that is, whether it's
- 31:05Speaker 5: a courthouse wedding and you meet friends for a picnic
- 31:07Speaker 5: in the garden afterwards, whether you have a wedding with
- 31:09Speaker 5: a one hundred people there or two.
- 31:11Speaker 4: Hundred point is it's about two people falling in love
- 31:14Speaker 4: and solidifying that.
- 31:15Speaker 5: Yeah, And I understand that we want to celebrate that.
- 31:18Speaker 5: And for those of us gift, a lot of your
- 31:20Speaker 5: gifting is our love language. And I totally get that perspective,
- 31:23Speaker 5: but I think we need to step away a little
- 31:25Speaker 5: bit from the expectation that it's about.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Anything more than just love. It's the two.
- 31:31Speaker 5: People coming together to celebrate and be like, we're in love.
- 31:34Speaker 5: We want you to share that love. In my mind,
- 31:36Speaker 5: that's where the expectation should end. And I know that
- 31:40Speaker 5: there's like the standard of you know, you cover your
- 31:42Speaker 5: siegs or blah blahlah blah. I don't love that.
- 31:46Speaker 2: I've had friends, they've had wishing wells.
- 31:48Speaker 5: Of course we've contributed, but I don't love it because
- 31:51Speaker 5: it does feel it.
- 31:55Speaker 4: I think the important thing to caveat here is I
- 31:57Speaker 4: know that there are a lot of cultural differenceferences as well.
- 32:01Speaker 4: Like right now we are talking assuming that this person
- 32:05Speaker 4: doesn't have any of those cultural overlays of like, oh no,
- 32:09Speaker 4: there is the expectation that you'd givet cash or you'd
- 32:12Speaker 4: do this or that, because I'm assuming they would have
- 32:14Speaker 4: disclosed that to us in the letter in right, So
- 32:18Speaker 4: I'm just assuming that this is a very standard way
- 32:22Speaker 4: of doing things, and when it comes to the cultural
- 32:25Speaker 4: side of things, hop off, like, I think that is fantastic,
- 32:28Speaker 4: And you, guys, honor a wedding in the way that
- 32:31Speaker 4: makes sense to you. We're just talking about it, and
- 32:33Speaker 4: I would say the most Western way, like is that
- 32:38Speaker 4: fair to say, because I don't want people going, oh well,
- 32:40Speaker 4: it's actually good luck for us to gift money or
- 32:43Speaker 4: actually that's a part of our culture and you have
- 32:46Speaker 4: to do a gift otherwise it's xyz Like totally, that's
- 32:50Speaker 4: a different conversation I think than a bride being like
- 32:55Speaker 4: I expect a wedding gift. If you're coming to my
- 32:58Speaker 4: wedding after spending one thousand dollars, be there we see.
- 33:01Speaker 5: And even the expectation that you've had to spend thousand
- 33:03Speaker 5: dollars ahead of time, I think is pretty crazy.
- 33:06Speaker 2: It's a huge.
- 33:07Speaker 5: Expectation to put on someone. I know that there have
- 33:10Speaker 5: been many yeo and friends of mine have got married
- 33:11Speaker 5: that if that was the expectation on me, like I
- 33:13Speaker 5: wouldn't have been able to particip No.
- 33:15Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, And like, I'm going to be really spicy
- 33:18Speaker 4: here because I've always been like, oh, it's your wedding,
- 33:20Speaker 4: it's your values. Like I have had a wedding, and
- 33:23Speaker 4: I am a firm believer that your bridal party should
- 33:26Speaker 4: never pay a cent to be your barridor party. They
- 33:29Speaker 4: are there to support you. If you want them wearing
- 33:31Speaker 4: a particular dress, you buy it. You want them to
- 33:34Speaker 4: be wearing a particular pair of shoes, that is on you,
- 33:37Speaker 4: as the bride and groom, to purchase it. And if
- 33:40Speaker 4: like this is going to sound real spicy, and I
- 33:42Speaker 4: don't even mind. If you cannot afford to clothe and
- 33:46Speaker 4: pay for all of the expenses of your bridal party,
- 33:48Speaker 4: you cannot afford to have a bridal party, full stop,
- 33:51Speaker 4: end of story. I find it insane to think that
- 33:54Speaker 4: I might turn around to Jess and be like, Jess,
- 33:55Speaker 4: I'd love you to be a part of my wedding
- 33:57Speaker 4: to celebrate only me and my husband.
- 34:00Speaker 2: And that's actually going to cost you one.
- 34:02Speaker 4: Thousand dollars to just participate because I don't know. I
- 34:06Speaker 4: think after having had my wedding and then having had
- 34:09Speaker 4: so many conversations about this, and like I know of
- 34:12Speaker 4: a girl who got married and had been going around
- 34:15Speaker 4: communicating that she's had a more expensive wedding because she
- 34:18Speaker 4: expects all of her family and friends to contribute generously.
- 34:22Speaker 2: To the wishing well and that would then cover the wedding.
- 34:24Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 34:25Speaker 4: I think that is insane behavior, like actually insane to
- 34:29Speaker 4: be putting your financial burdens as a responsibility onto your
- 34:33Speaker 4: family and friends. So like, I know that that's not
- 34:36Speaker 4: going to go down well with a lot of people,
- 34:38Speaker 4: but genuinely, if you cannot afford to pay for all
- 34:41Speaker 4: of the expenses of your bridal party, don't have one.
- 34:45Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, or like those ways, you know, like the
- 34:47Speaker 5: dress thing, Like I love it when I see weddings
- 34:50Speaker 5: where everyone's worn like one of their own dresses, Like
- 34:53Speaker 5: can everyone wear you know, if you all have a
- 34:55Speaker 5: blue dress, like is that something everyone has. Can you
- 34:57Speaker 5: all wear your favorite blue dress? Well, you know, there's
- 34:59Speaker 5: ways to do it it It doesn't put the pressure on.
- 35:02Speaker 5: But I think a lot of weddings, and it's probably
- 35:05Speaker 5: with the rise of social media, but a lot of
- 35:07Speaker 5: it feels very like almost like keeping up with people,
- 35:11Speaker 5: one upping people, like, very performative, almost not to diminish,
- 35:15Speaker 5: like anyone who's had a big, beautiful wedding, Like I
- 35:18Speaker 5: know Victoria wedding.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Was no, no, no, My wedding was over the top. Beck.
- 35:21Speaker 4: It was insane and I regret not one part of that,
- 35:24Speaker 4: but the entire thing we had because that's what Steve
- 35:27Speaker 4: and I wanted, and like I was, like, I posted
- 35:30Speaker 4: about it online, but like I think, Jess, you were there,
- 35:34Speaker 4: we didn't post most of the wedding online.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Because it wasn't actually about that. It wasn't about what
- 35:39Speaker 2: it looked like.
- 35:40Speaker 4: But now I'm like looking back and going, oh my god,
- 35:42Speaker 4: like we spent so much money on that.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Do people think that that was performative? Oh my god?
- 35:47Speaker 4: No, it so that people like Jess and you know,
- 35:49Speaker 4: if I had known you at the time, that you
- 35:51Speaker 4: could have had a bomb time at my wedding because
- 35:53Speaker 4: I wanted guests to walk away being like, oh, you
- 35:56Speaker 4: had the best time.
- 35:57Speaker 5: Yes, I think we achieved that absolutely, And I think
- 36:00Speaker 5: like ultimately, the craxit I think is if they're your friends,
- 36:05Speaker 5: I would hope that they're not going to hold it
- 36:07Speaker 5: against you if you don't get them a gift.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Like that's eraise. Don't treat friends that way. They're they're
- 36:11Speaker 2: they're there to celebrate their love.
- 36:13Speaker 5: They want you to be a part of that because
- 36:14Speaker 5: you're obviously a very special person in their life. And
- 36:17Speaker 5: so my thought would be that there's no pressure or
- 36:21Speaker 5: expectation on you to give them anything above and beyond
- 36:24Speaker 5: your your presence.
- 36:26Speaker 2: What did everybody else? Oh my god, oh god, so juicy?
- 36:28Speaker 2: Sit down strap in. We asked a few questions.
- 36:32Speaker 4: First, as always, we said, if you already spent heaps
- 36:35Speaker 4: to be in the wedding, should you still give a gift?
- 36:37Speaker 4: Twenty one percent of you said yep, of course. Twenty
- 36:40Speaker 4: three percent of you said no, being in the wedding
- 36:42Speaker 4: party is enough, twenty percent said it depends on what
- 36:46Speaker 4: we have spent, and then thirty six percent of you
- 36:49Speaker 4: said I would give something small. Wed then even split
- 36:52Speaker 4: pretty across the board. That's not where it gets spicy.
- 36:56Speaker 4: We then said, would you feel rude turning up without
- 36:58Speaker 4: a gift? Of you said only if I'd already done
- 37:02Speaker 4: so much. Nineteen percent of you said Nope, gifts shouldn't
- 37:06Speaker 4: be expected, twenty percent said depends on how close we were.
- 37:10Speaker 4: Fifty one percent of you said, yep, I couldn't turn
- 37:12Speaker 4: up to a wedding without one.
- 37:14Speaker 2: I get the anxiety, I.
- 37:15Speaker 7: Get it, But there you show up and the people
- 37:17Speaker 7: aren't even there yet, Like I feel like you could
- 37:19Speaker 7: definitely get away with like no one's seeing you walking
- 37:21Speaker 7: with that.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Shows up after you.
- 37:25Speaker 4: Un ethical money hack put a card on the table
- 37:29Speaker 4: gift table that mentions in the card hope you love
- 37:33Speaker 4: the gift.
- 37:33Speaker 2: We put a lot of.
- 37:34Speaker 4: Thought into it, and then they won't know which gift
- 37:38Speaker 4: you got and cards fall off things all the time.
- 37:42Speaker 2: That's very true. Don't do that.
- 37:44Speaker 4: That's terrible advice from an ex financial advisor. But we
- 37:48Speaker 4: also said to the community, what is your two cents?
- 37:51Speaker 4: First cab off the rank. A gift can be sentimental
- 37:54Speaker 4: and doesn't have to cost anything at all. So I
- 37:56Speaker 4: think that that's very beckcoded because I think that you
- 37:59Speaker 4: would turn up to a wedding with a gift, but
- 38:01Speaker 4: it doesn't necessarily have to be cash or money or
- 38:05Speaker 4: cloch love hard one hundred percent. There's a lot of
- 38:08Speaker 4: clapping hand emojis in this, so I'm not going to
- 38:11Speaker 4: read all of those out, but in between each word
- 38:13Speaker 4: is a clapping emoji. So don't have bridal parties you
- 38:18Speaker 4: can't afford.
- 38:19Speaker 2: To pay for. That's it. That's it. Copycut.
- 38:24Speaker 4: Okay, the next person said weddings are money sucks.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Give them fifty bucks. I mean it's true.
- 38:30Speaker 4: Somebody else said, and this is a two parter. I
- 38:33Speaker 4: spent two grand total being in a friend's wedding, and
- 38:36Speaker 4: now we barely speak because I actually can't get past it.
- 38:39Speaker 2: I'm actually paying.
- 38:41Speaker 4: For my entire hands party weekend because of this, so
- 38:43Speaker 4: nobody else is out.
- 38:45Speaker 2: That's two thousand dollars. It's just such a staggering amount.
- 38:49Speaker 7: I know, for something you don't you didn't have any
- 38:51Speaker 7: control over. For me, it's the same as getting into
- 38:53Speaker 7: a car accident and your friend asking you to be
- 38:55Speaker 7: in the bridal party. I'm like, wow, here's this huge,
- 38:58Speaker 7: unexpected cost I didn't prepare for.
- 39:01Speaker 2: It's no not like actually.
- 39:02Speaker 4: Wild right, And I keep bringing this back to me.
- 39:05Speaker 4: I think because I've had a wedding. But also I'm
- 39:07Speaker 4: a finance person, like I was a financial advisor. I
- 39:10Speaker 4: talk about money all the time. I run cheese on
- 39:12Speaker 4: the money. And when I was starting to plan my wedding,
- 39:17Speaker 4: one of the first conversations I had with my husband
- 39:19Speaker 4: was like, hey, like, I don't think we've seen any
- 39:22Speaker 4: of our friends do this, because like my husband had
- 39:24Speaker 4: been in Upplothora of bridal parties before groom's parties or
- 39:29Speaker 4: whatever we want to call them, and like, so would I,
- 39:31Speaker 4: and we'd all paid for it, and like I'd actually
- 39:34Speaker 4: never held a grudge. So like, just to be very clear,
- 39:37Speaker 4: if I was in your bridal party and you asked
- 39:39Speaker 4: me to pay, I don't feel bad. But then my
- 39:41Speaker 4: opinion is very different to like the facilitation of that, right,
- 39:45Speaker 4: like you ask me, I'm actually willing to do that.
- 39:47Speaker 2: That's fine, no skin off my back.
- 39:49Speaker 4: But when it came to my wedding, I sat down
- 39:50Speaker 4: and said to my husband, our bridal party doesn't lift
- 39:54Speaker 4: a finger like they do not like they're there for us.
- 39:57Speaker 4: They do not spend a cent like on their suits,
- 40:00Speaker 4: their makeup, on their shoes, and I even paid so
- 40:03Speaker 4: much for my own Hens weekends and Hen's trips that
- 40:07Speaker 4: we went on because I was like, I'm not having
- 40:09Speaker 4: other people pay for something that I'm getting, Like, yeah,
- 40:12Speaker 4: hopefully they enjoyed it, but like this was for me,
- 40:15Speaker 4: Like this wasn't for anybody else. Yeah, So for me,
- 40:18Speaker 4: I was just very adamant that the money would come
- 40:23Speaker 4: from me. And my idea on that was that if
- 40:26Speaker 4: I couldn't afford it, we wouldn't be doing those things.
- 40:29Speaker 4: Because if you can't afford it, why would your friends
- 40:31Speaker 4: be able.
- 40:32Speaker 2: To afford it?
- 40:32Speaker 5: And people don't love you less because they don't have
- 40:34Speaker 5: that money to give you.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Absolutely not.
- 40:36Speaker 4: Another comment was something needs to give with weddings. It's
- 40:40Speaker 4: not actually realistic in twenty twenty five to do this
- 40:42Speaker 4: any longer. Yeah, on the entire financial landscape has changed,
- 40:47Speaker 4: so that is so true. Another person said, you don't
- 40:50Speaker 4: have to accept being in the wedding party and you
- 40:53Speaker 4: can always set boundaries on finance.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Which is true.
- 40:56Speaker 4: But like if your best friend or someone you're so
- 40:59Speaker 4: close with is I would love for you to stand
- 41:01Speaker 4: by me on arguably the most important day of my life.
- 41:05Speaker 2: It's a big question. Yeah, yes, and that's so beautiful.
- 41:09Speaker 4: It doesn't all come back to finances, which is why,
- 41:11Speaker 4: Like there's a split between me going if somebody asked
- 41:14Speaker 4: me to be part of their bridal party and I
- 41:15Speaker 4: had to pay, no grudge. But I'm very much of
- 41:19Speaker 4: the opinion that if you want to speak from a
- 41:22Speaker 4: financial perspective, that should not be the burden of the
- 41:24Speaker 4: people participating. Yes, another person, I'm going to do two more.
- 41:29Speaker 4: Another person said, why do hens and bucks have to
- 41:32Speaker 4: be so extravagant these days? What is wrong with a
- 41:35Speaker 4: simple afternoon or night out with the boys?
- 41:37Speaker 2: Totally?
- 41:38Speaker 4: Another person and this is the last You will never
- 41:41Speaker 4: regret giving a gift. You may end up regretting not
- 41:44Speaker 4: giving one, though you can give one later.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 41:48Speaker 4: Also bonus one. Someone said, make a loping great again.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Honestly, yes, here for it.
- 41:54Speaker 4: Oh please, Like, if anybody wants to get married Elope, y, Elope.
- 41:59Speaker 2: Go to the courthouse and then have a dinner with
- 42:00Speaker 2: your family and practice.
- 42:02Speaker 4: I think just to look turn up one day Jess
- 42:05Speaker 4: and be like, by the way, I'm married?
- 42:08Speaker 2: Why not? Absolutely? I love it.
- 42:11Speaker 4: Anyway, guys, it has been a good little chat. What
- 42:14Speaker 4: a good Friday episode Gordous So we'll see you guys
- 42:17Speaker 4: bride and early on Monday morning for our money, Darien,
- 42:19Speaker 4: have the best weekend by guys.
- 42:21Speaker 3: Bye.
