1:48
SPEAKER_00: Hello, world.
1:49
SPEAKER_00: We are broadcasting live from Coronavirus Nation.
1:55
SPEAKER_00: Coronavirus.
1:56
SPEAKER_03: Coronavirus.
1:58
SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, I cannot think of that word without hearing Cardi B.
2:04
SPEAKER_00: It's kind of a blessing though, because as stressful as everything is, that is like a little joy every time you read the word coronavirus.
2:12
SPEAKER_00: It's true.
2:14
unknown: Ha ha ha!
2:15
SPEAKER_04: Coronavirus! And TikTok is just actually I saw a TikTok and it was this girl walking around New York City, and the cop cars have like these little speeches that go off, and they're like, stay six feet apart, like social distancing.
2:30
SPEAKER_04: And then they had the Cardi B voice saying, It's coronavirus!
2:37
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've spent hours on TikTok every day ever since this started.
2:43
SPEAKER_00: And I didn't even have it on my phone before this uh shelter in place.
2:48
SPEAKER_00: Anyway, anyway.
2:50
SPEAKER_00: Enough coronavirus talk.
2:52
SPEAKER_00: Enough coronavirus talk.
2:54
SPEAKER_00: We don't need it.
2:55
SPEAKER_00: But needless to say, we are now separate.
2:59
SPEAKER_00: We are doing this remotely from uh New York to Maine.
3:04
SPEAKER_00: Uh if you would like to state your address for the listeners to find you, you may go ahead.
3:10
SPEAKER_01: No, if anyone was on our on our tails from our last uh last location.
3:16
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we just threw you off.
3:20
SPEAKER_04: You can't catch our scent anymore.
3:22
SPEAKER_01: Scent has been re-rubbed.
3:24
SPEAKER_00: Well, you could probably still find me pretty easily.
3:27
SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty close to where we just were.
3:29
SPEAKER_04: Well, don't say that.
3:31
SPEAKER_00: Where are you?
3:32
SPEAKER_00: And quite a hubbub getting up here, so everyone could have just seen all of my furniture being moved.
3:38
SPEAKER_00: You know, it was not subtle.
3:40
SPEAKER_00: You're next.
3:42
SPEAKER_00: I certainly am.
3:44
SPEAKER_00: Speaking of, pretty coincidental that you would say that phrase, Ian, because it just so happens that this week we watched the film Your Next.
3:56
SPEAKER_00: What a coincidence.
3:58
SPEAKER_00: I know who would have thunk.
4:00
SPEAKER_00: So Your Next came out in the year 2013 and was actually the first movie that I saw in theaters in college.
4:08
SPEAKER_00: I got a big group of friends together.
4:10
SPEAKER_00: Now that's a total lie that I just told you.
4:13
SPEAKER_00: I saw Insidious Part 2 first movie in the in college, so that was a lie.
4:19
SPEAKER_00: But I did get a big group of friends in college together, and we went to go see your next uh with each other in theaters.
4:28
SPEAKER_04: I was not invited, apparently.
4:31
SPEAKER_00: This came out in the year 2013.
4:33
SPEAKER_00: Now, interesting to know, I well, at least I think, this film premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in 2011, the same year that Scream 4 premiered, and a film that I have been I've had on the back burner for the three of us to watch together, and now I kind of want to wait until we can like be together to watch it because I just adore it so much and want to stare at your faces while we watch it.
5:01
SPEAKER_00: But another movie called Cabin in the Woods that came out in 2011, and all three of these movies I think are kind of similar and share similar traits.
5:11
SPEAKER_00: And so interesting that they all premiered in the same year, and then Cabin or Scream 4 came out in 2011, Cabin in the Woods came out in 2012, and Your Next came out in 2013.
5:22
SPEAKER_00: So they must have been in cahoots planning their release dates.
5:28
SPEAKER_00: Also, looking at this film in context, horror was in kind of a weird in-between period where the saw kind of torture porn craze that we've talked about before was ending, and this was right before kind of the supernatural conjuring wave had hit.
5:44
SPEAKER_00: So it was kind of a no-man's land of what's gonna be the next thing.
5:48
SPEAKER_00: So I like to note that these three movies all came out right around the same time.
5:53
SPEAKER_00: Your next was directed and edited by Adam Wingard.
5:59
SPEAKER_00: He also directed segments in VHS and VHS 2 and uh Blair Witch, not the original, but the remake or the sequel.
6:09
SPEAKER_00: I have not seen it, so I don't know quite what it is, but the film from 2016.
6:14
SPEAKER_00: He also is the director of the upcoming film Godzilla vs.
6:18
SPEAKER_00: Kong, which sounds insane already.
6:23
SPEAKER_00: And apparently, I saw this on IMDB and then I looked a little further into it.
6:28
SPEAKER_00: This was announced in 2017, and there's been no news since, so I wouldn't count on it.
6:33
SPEAKER_00: But an English language remake of the film I Saw the Devil, uh, which is a pretty popular, I believe, Korean horror film from the early 2000s.
6:44
SPEAKER_00: Uh, the screenplay was written by Simon Barrett, who is a longtime collaborator with Wingard.
6:51
SPEAKER_00: He shares all of the credits I said above for Adam Wingard, except he is not involved with Godzilla vs.
6:57
SPEAKER_00: Kong, which is a travesty because who wouldn't want to be involved on that uh what sounds like a gem?
7:04
SPEAKER_00: And uh he also plays the Tiger Mask Killer.
7:09
SPEAKER_04: So interesting.
7:11
SPEAKER_00: Yes, he makes an appearance in his own movie.
7:14
SPEAKER_00: Now I would like to credit the music in this film.
7:17
SPEAKER_00: I think the score is really beautiful and kind of plays a big role in the um the drive and the energy of the film.
7:25
SPEAKER_00: I think that this kind of synth score really amps it up towards the second half of the movie.
7:30
SPEAKER_00: I really enjoyed it.
7:34
SPEAKER_04: I did the um synthesizer music.
7:38
SPEAKER_04: Is that the right word for it?
7:40
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
7:40
SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, the Stranger Things music.
7:43
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, I are about toward three-fourths of the way into the movie, I was like, this right here is slasher music, if I've ever heard it.
7:53
SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, it's uh synthesizer is a very big, like 80s instrument.
7:58
SPEAKER_00: That's kind of when it came into popularity and was developed.
8:00
SPEAKER_00: So you are right on the money, you guys.
8:04
SPEAKER_00: And then, of course, there is the song Looking for the Magic by the Dwight Twille band that plays over and over throughout the movie.
8:13
unknown: Oh mercy!
8:37
SPEAKER_02: I've been looking for magic.
8:43
SPEAKER_04: Also, I did not know that this was a Canadian film, but during it, I was like, these people sound Canadian.
8:53
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, somebody said like sorry or something like that.
8:59
SPEAKER_00: Um, and then I would like to note that in the trailer for this movie, instead of the song Looking for the Magic, they actually used the song Perfect Day by Lou Reed, if you've heard that song.
9:11
SPEAKER_00: So um I don't know why they changed it, but um, having like a pop song over like scary movie stuff seems to be popular.
9:22
SPEAKER_00: If you think about like I guess The Strangers came out in 2008 and they had music that the strangers would play on their record players that they couldn't hear them walk around, and then it comes up again in other movies.
9:35
SPEAKER_00: For example, See the Strangers 2 Pray at Night.
9:38
SPEAKER_00: So I think it becomes kind of a popular thing to have like a happy fun pop song, and then you're watching people get massacred.
9:44
SPEAKER_04: So I the first part of this movie I was like, this is going to be The Strangers, and then it was not.
9:54
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, but it also is similar.
9:57
SPEAKER_00: I actually wrote down uh that the director, the way they kind of conceived this movie is they said in a behind-the-scenes um feature on the DVD that they wanted to make a horror movie, but they thought the only way they could do it successfully would be to make something different or to have a new approach.
10:15
SPEAKER_00: So that was their main goal was to have some sort of like new horror thing to do.
10:21
SPEAKER_00: And the other thing was apparently the director Adam Wingard told the writer that he wanted to make a home invasion movie because those were the only movies that scared him anymore.
10:30
SPEAKER_00: And so that's kind of where the concept of this movie came about.
10:33
SPEAKER_00: And 2011, I have to assume, was heavily influenced by The Strangers because that movie came out in 2008 and was such a big hit that by 2011, and I'm sure they shot this in like 2010, I have to assume that that was a big uh part of the process.
10:51
SPEAKER_04: Alright, we have Charnie Vinson as Erin.
10:56
SPEAKER_04: Apparently, she was in uh Step Up 3D from 2010.
11:02
SPEAKER_04: Um 3D.
11:04
SPEAKER_04: 3D.
11:05
SPEAKER_01: Is that the one with the big kind of like what my mustache almost is.
11:09
SPEAKER_04: No, the dance scene that's outside with the water.
11:13
SPEAKER_04: You know what I'm talking about?
11:15
SPEAKER_00: I have seen zero of the step up film.
11:18
SPEAKER_04: Are you kidding me?
11:19
SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
11:20
SPEAKER_04: It is like they're all just so good.
11:24
SPEAKER_04: Um all right, I'm gonna have to go back and watch that one.
11:28
SPEAKER_00: She did mention in the uh special features that she's a dancer and she was looking for a little bit.
11:34
SPEAKER_04: But yeah, she's so skinny.
11:36
SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
11:37
SPEAKER_00: Well, she was looking for a film when she signed on to this that was physical and she could show off her physicality.
11:43
SPEAKER_01: So that's why was it?
11:45
SPEAKER_04: I mean, she doesn't look strong by any means, but like who?
11:49
SPEAKER_04: She could be a dancer.
11:50
SPEAKER_01: Who?
11:52
SPEAKER_04: The The main girl.
11:53
SPEAKER_04: She's strong.
11:54
SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, her arms are totally strong.
11:56
SPEAKER_04: Her arms are twigs.
11:58
SPEAKER_01: You can't kill people if you're not strong.
12:00
SPEAKER_00: She Yeah, she was stabbing with a lot of force, went straight through the skull on a lot of people.
12:07
SPEAKER_04: I'm just saying she has the body of a dainty little dancer.
12:13
SPEAKER_04: But her arms could use some muscle girlfriend.
12:17
SPEAKER_04: Um, we also have Amy Simits.
12:22
SPEAKER_04: Simits?
12:23
SPEAKER_04: I'm so bad at this.
12:24
SPEAKER_04: Why do you give me the names?
12:26
SPEAKER_00: Well, it's funny because you can go back, you'll hear a s a familiar credit in this, and you can go back and hear you struggle with the exact same name for this movie.
12:36
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
12:36
SPEAKER_04: Alright, well, Amy plays the role of Amy.
12:40
SPEAKER_04: Um she was an Alien Covenant in 2017, Stranger Things.
12:46
SPEAKER_04: Oh, and Pet Cemetery in 2019.
12:49
SPEAKER_00: So, yes, we did cover that film, and Caroline, you struggle with that name.
12:54
SPEAKER_04: Who is Amy?
12:55
SPEAKER_04: Who's Amy?
12:56
SPEAKER_00: She plays the mother slash wife in Pet Cemetery.
13:00
SPEAKER_04: She was the mother in this?
13:02
SPEAKER_00: Uh no, she was the uh sister.
13:05
SPEAKER_00: Brown Oh the blonde, yeah, who gets uh a little throat action towards the beginning.
13:12
SPEAKER_04: Gotcha.
13:13
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, short-lived character here.
13:16
SPEAKER_04: Um we also have Barbara Crampton in the role of Aubrey.
13:21
SPEAKER_00: This is the mom.
13:22
SPEAKER_04: This is the mom, and I first thing I noticed was like, dang, she looks so young, but apparently she's like 60 something.
13:31
SPEAKER_00: She's 61 right now.
13:33
SPEAKER_04: Well, she looks like she's like 31, so congrats, Barbara.
13:39
SPEAKER_04: Um, she is a true horror icon and horror icon, and has been in classic genre films like Reanimator in 1985, Chopping Ball L O L from 1986, From Beyond in 1986, and Castle Freak from 1995.
13:59
SPEAKER_04: She's had a resurgence in the past 10 years, appearing in The Lords of Salem from 2012, We Are Still Here in 2015, and the Shudder series Channel Zero.
14:10
SPEAKER_00: Um, real fast, I just want to chime in that Reanimator rules, and I've been waiting for us to cover that movie on uh the podcast because it's really fun.
14:22
SPEAKER_04: Not Chopping Mall, because that one sounds fun.
14:24
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
14:25
SPEAKER_00: Chopping Mall's pretty fun too.
14:26
SPEAKER_00: I I cannot lie.
14:28
SPEAKER_04: Well, uh Barbara is also a soap opera star.
14:33
SPEAKER_04: Um, her first credit on IMDB is 80 episodes of Days of Our Lives, and has also had a very lengthy stint in The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless.
14:47
SPEAKER_04: Makes that money.
14:50
SPEAKER_01: Gotta pay some bills.
14:51
SPEAKER_04: Love that journey for you.
14:53
SPEAKER_00: Both of those shows, uh, The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless, she had like over a hundred episodes that she was in for each of those shows.
15:01
SPEAKER_04: What a star.
15:02
SPEAKER_04: I wish we could have gotten more from her in this.
15:04
SPEAKER_00: How much money do you think she made an episode?
15:08
SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
15:08
SPEAKER_00: But it's kind of funny because I feel like you hear the names of those shows and you think that they're jokes.
15:13
SPEAKER_00: Like, I've definitely heard of the bold and the beautiful and the young and the restless, but I don't know if I've ever comprehended that those are real TV shows.
15:21
SPEAKER_04: I think Yeah, my grandma watches them every day at 4 p.m.
15:25
SPEAKER_04: Like it's like she has to be home to watch her soap opera.
15:28
SPEAKER_01: I think my uncle's been on Days of Your Lives.
15:31
SPEAKER_00: Wow.
15:32
SPEAKER_00: Ian, you didn't tell us you had a celebrity in your fam.
15:36
SPEAKER_00: Celeb.
15:37
SPEAKER_00: Does he know Barbara Crampton?
15:39
SPEAKER_00: I'll have to check.
15:41
SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, you should imagine Barbara Crampton on our podcast.
15:45
SPEAKER_04: You know, everyone always makes fun of soap opera stars, but like they have a sweet little deal.
15:51
SPEAKER_00: Um, if you think about how many episodes and how often those shows come on, that sounds like the hardest job ever.
15:58
SPEAKER_00: They must be filming like every day forever.
16:01
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
16:02
SPEAKER_04: And like slapping each other and crying.
16:09
SPEAKER_01: Maybe they do multiple episodes a day.
16:11
SPEAKER_04: Oh, miserable.
16:12
SPEAKER_04: That's why there's so many characters.
16:14
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that sounds horrible.
16:16
SPEAKER_01: Um I've never watched a soap opera.
16:19
SPEAKER_01: Like a proper daytime soap opera.
16:22
SPEAKER_00: I don't think I have either, but my mom used to watch General Hospital every day, and she tells me it was great.
16:30
SPEAKER_04: Anyways, um many of the actors in this film are also prominent horror creators behind the camera.
16:40
SPEAKER_04: Um so Ty West plays the role of Tariq.
16:46
SPEAKER_04: Um he actually wrote and directed The House of the Devil from 2009.
16:50
SPEAKER_00: An incredible movie.
16:52
SPEAKER_04: Uh The Innkeepers from 2011, and he directed episodes of the new of a few Netflix horror shows series.
17:03
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think I read he directed a few episodes of Chambers and um shoot.
17:10
SPEAKER_00: There was one more horror series on Netflix he directed episodes of, and I was like, huh.
17:14
SPEAKER_00: I've watched that, but I cannot remember.
17:17
SPEAKER_04: Also a short-lived character.
17:20
SPEAKER_04: Um we have Larry Fesenden, who plays the role of Eric Carson, which I don't think we ever hear his name, but he's the neighbor.
17:30
SPEAKER_04: Um he starred in, produced, and directed many horrors, um, including We Are What We Are from 2013 and Depraved from 2019.
17:40
SPEAKER_04: Joe Swannberg in the role of Drake hasn't necessarily been in horror, but he wrote and directed Drinking Buddies from 2013.
17:50
SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love that movie.
17:51
SPEAKER_04: It's like a movie that always pops up recommended for me on Netflix, but I never watch it.
17:55
SPEAKER_00: It's definitely actually It's great.
17:59
SPEAKER_04: What?
18:00
SPEAKER_00: I recommend.
18:02
SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
18:02
SPEAKER_04: Alright, well, no time like the present to dig into the recommended.
18:07
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you know, finish reading this note because you'll see I have already recommended them.
18:12
SPEAKER_04: Um he was also involved in Happy Christmas from 2014.
18:17
SPEAKER_04: Um He wrote and directed it.
18:19
SPEAKER_04: Oh, wrote and directed it.
18:20
SPEAKER_04: Um He's also the creator of Netflix's Easy, which I have watched a couple of episodes of that as well.
18:26
SPEAKER_01: Oh, that makes so much sense.
18:28
SPEAKER_01: That and Drinking Buddies.
18:30
SPEAKER_00: And Happy Christmas, yeah.
18:32
SPEAKER_00: Ian, you must be obsessed with this guy.
18:34
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I've never seen Happy Christmas.
18:36
SPEAKER_01: I need to watch it.
18:37
SPEAKER_01: Uh he was Drake, who was the douchey brother.
18:41
SPEAKER_01: The IMDB summary reads, quote, when the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learn that one of the victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.
18:58
SPEAKER_04: That sucks.
19:00
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that is not how I would describe this movie.
19:02
SPEAKER_00: I would say, like, wedding anniversary party goes wrong when a home invasion happens, and maybe not everyone's motives are as they seem.
19:15
SPEAKER_04: Ooh, uh Parker.
19:17
SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
19:18
SPEAKER_04: Hire him, IMDB.
19:21
SPEAKER_00: I think anyone can write the IMDB summary and submit it.
19:25
SPEAKER_04: Oh.
19:27
SPEAKER_04: I imagine one little guy back there like watching all these movies and summarizing them.
19:34
SPEAKER_01: That'd be a great job.
19:36
SPEAKER_01: The Rotten Tomatoes critic score is 78%.
19:41
SPEAKER_01: The audience score is 60%.
19:45
SPEAKER_01: And the critic's consensus is quote, your next energetic and effective mix of brutal gore and pitched black humor, will please horror buffs and beyond.
20:00
SPEAKER_00: Now, I take a little bit of issue with this critic's consensus because it says will please horror buffs and beyond.
20:06
SPEAKER_00: I think this movie is like a very insider horror comedy, and you'll only get it if you've watched a good number of horror movies and can like, I think I've mentioned before, but like take a little glee and pleasure from watching people die.
20:22
SPEAKER_00: But I think if you have not watched a lot of horror movies, this probably seems like the like cruelest, meanest movie you've ever watched in your life.
20:30
SPEAKER_01: A lot of killing.
20:31
SPEAKER_04: I would agree.
20:32
SPEAKER_04: There's some serious gore in this.
20:34
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's just like they set it up for you to like certain people, like the mom and the dad, and uh I mean, not a lot of the siblings, but like the sister, and then they just like are pretty ruthless with them.
20:48
SPEAKER_00: So I think unless you're familiar with horror and how it operates, this movie seems like really uh not nice.
20:56
SPEAKER_00: What do you guys think?
20:59
SPEAKER_04: I mean, as a horror connoisseur myself, I didn't let that get to me, you know.
21:08
SPEAKER_04: But I could see I mean, if I watched this and it was like one of my first horror movies, I would be freaking out.
21:17
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
21:17
SPEAKER_01: I mean, also like the gore.
21:20
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there was there were definitely some moments where I just like going in my hands.
21:27
SPEAKER_00: The gore in this movie is A plus Gold Star Chef's Kiss.
21:32
SPEAKER_00: It is so good.
21:33
SPEAKER_00: Um, and actually, I I remember not loving this movie because I thought it was mean, and I like something a little more like funny and nice.
21:44
SPEAKER_00: I think Scream, even though I like get a little sad watching Scream One and like Billy and Stu being so crazy and sad.
21:53
SPEAKER_00: But um I like a little bit more Glee in my movies.
21:58
SPEAKER_00: I also love Glee.
22:00
SPEAKER_00: But um I think that this movie it has a lot of the staples of horror while twisting it.
22:07
SPEAKER_00: I think that a lot of the uh gore, like you just said, the blender, is very like B movie classic horror kind of gross out fun thing that you might not understand if you're not super familiar with horror.
22:22
SPEAKER_00: And since we have watched some horror and maybe we haven't seen a blender, it's kind of like, oh dude, like that's rad.
22:29
SPEAKER_00: I'm but imagining some bros watching this, obviously.
22:32
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
22:34
SPEAKER_00: Any other initial thoughts?
22:36
SPEAKER_04: Um, I was telling Parker this already, but I don't know if it was the house or like the sheer amount of characters that were slowly getting peeled off, but I had like clue vibes.
22:51
SPEAKER_00: And I actually wrote down when you texted me that uh it is bullet 11 on my list of uh scene highlights, but you said it's like clue, but with a murderer outside the house.
23:05
SPEAKER_00: And then I wrote Null Cap's wink because uh it was not what you assumed.
23:13
SPEAKER_00: The murderers were actually inside the house and inside the family.
23:18
SPEAKER_00: So there is, you know, a big twist in this movie that uh Aaron, the main character's boyfriend, Crispin, and his brother and his girlfriend are behind the whole thing and have orchestrated it to take the family's fortune as their inheritance.
23:35
SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm assuming y'all were surprised by this since Caroline texted me and was clueless.
23:44
SPEAKER_04: Um I mean.
23:47
SPEAKER_01: I think you were surprised by it.
23:50
SPEAKER_01: I was not.
23:53
SPEAKER_04: I think part of the reason that I initially said clue was like because there were so many people involved, it was like, okay, what's going on here?
24:05
SPEAKER_04: Like, obviously, unless it's like the strangers where you really don't know why someone is attacking you, who those people are, what they have against you.
24:15
SPEAKER_04: Like there had to be some sort of motive or like inside thing going on.
24:21
SPEAKER_04: And it wasn't it wasn't giving me like creepy vibes like the strangers did, you know, and because of that, you know, I could get a sense that like something was gonna trick me up.
24:33
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because it's actually the exact opposite of the strangers, right?
24:37
SPEAKER_00: Where the motive is because you are home, and this one the motive is very much like hired and paid for.
24:44
SPEAKER_00: Uh I actually just counted because I have a little cheat sheet of character names.
24:48
SPEAKER_00: There are fifteen characters in this movie and one survives.
24:53
SPEAKER_00: We think.
24:54
SPEAKER_00: So there are fourteen deaths in this movie.
24:58
SPEAKER_01: That's a lot.
24:59
SPEAKER_01: It's a lot of death.
25:00
SPEAKER_00: Ah, and actually fifteen deaths if you include the police officer at the end.
25:04
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, there are many kills in this movie.
25:09
SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
25:10
SPEAKER_00: I don't even know how to go through this movie because I took so many notes uh because there are just so many good moments.
25:17
SPEAKER_00: I think the first thing to note is just how uh obscenely wealthy it is, it appears his family is.
25:24
SPEAKER_00: He said he says that his dad is a marketing person for the KPG, which I do not know what the KP do you know what the KPG is?
25:33
SPEAKER_04: I was assuming it was just some sort of like bank or finance thing.
25:39
SPEAKER_00: Well no, she says it's a defense contractor and that they're fascists.
25:43
SPEAKER_00: That's right.
25:44
SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm Googling it.
25:46
SPEAKER_00: KPG defense contractor.
25:49
SPEAKER_00: The defense contractor that experimented uh oh Ah Share.
25:59
SPEAKER_00: So it appears KPG is a um made-up organization by Adam Wingard that appears in many of his movies, including VHS your VHS 2, Your Next, and The Guest from 2014.
26:16
SPEAKER_00: So it's a defense contractor that uh Wingard has created that as a thread throughout his movies.
26:24
SPEAKER_00: I always love a shared universe with other movies.
26:28
SPEAKER_00: So we don't know.
26:29
SPEAKER_00: I don't I do not know what a defense contractor is, do you?
26:33
SPEAKER_00: Like they make military.
26:36
SPEAKER_04: They make like weapons or make weapons.
26:40
SPEAKER_00: Alright, well, she he says that there he's in the marketing side of it, so I don't he he tries to write it off as like, oh, he's not one of the bad guys.
26:48
SPEAKER_00: But so it seems to me that this movie at least is posing this as kind of a uh not sketchy, but like uh not honorable way of making money.
27:00
SPEAKER_00: And that I assume, I assumed at least that this money has this wealth has come upon them in their um later life, and they bought this massive house in their retirement for the dad to fix up, and apparently he's just been hiring uh contractors to fix it up for him.
27:21
SPEAKER_00: Uh but anyway, I say this to just say that they're extremely wealthy, and I think it's interesting that even though they're wealthy, there is good and bad with them.
27:32
SPEAKER_00: This movie is not like posing the wealthy as evil.
27:36
SPEAKER_00: The parents seem oblivious but kind, and then they have bred kind of horrible children.
27:43
SPEAKER_00: Uh, there's like a douchebag son, there's obviously a son that is evil and has orchestrated this whole thing, and a daughter who is very like, Daddy, I love you, Daddy, I can run really fast, whatever.
27:59
SPEAKER_04: I will say, um, I when they showed the family portrait, like before any of the kids got there, or yeah, bougie portrait.
28:09
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but like we had been introduced to the first son, and then the douchebag son shows up and the daughter shows up, and before they show Felix, I said out loud to Ian, Where's the other son?
28:21
SPEAKER_04: Because he's like shorter than the rest of them, and like kind of like was pushed off to the side in that family portrait.
28:28
SPEAKER_04: So I already had suspicions about him.
28:32
SPEAKER_03: Sure.
28:34
SPEAKER_00: Caroline was on to it from the beginning.
28:37
SPEAKER_00: Caroline always knows like I do.
28:41
SPEAKER_00: Um, I also like that this movie kind of plays on a lot of uh, I don't know, there's a lot of moments in this movie that I'm like, ugh, it's so obvious that you're in a horror movie.
28:52
SPEAKER_00: Like at the beginning when Barbara Crampton is in the uh house when they first get there, and there's that like over-the-top loud noise over on the ceiling.
29:02
SPEAKER_00: She's like, someone's here, and her husband's like, no.
29:06
SPEAKER_00: And watching it, I was like, Are you kidding?
29:09
SPEAKER_00: That was not like a she heard like a little noise and was like, ooh, is someone here?
29:13
SPEAKER_00: It was like there was a huge like chandelier shaking noise, and then like she's getting water later, and you see the reflection of one of the masks in the window.
29:22
SPEAKER_00: There are just so many moments in this that are like, okay, like very horror movie, but I think that it's very intentional the way that it's played, so that later we can be more surprised by the twists of the movie.
29:35
SPEAKER_00: What did you think of the family dynamics in this?
29:39
SPEAKER_00: They have this big dinner that I thought was absolutely infuriating because everybody is being so aggressive and confrontational, which I do not enjoy, but they're just like flat out just like looking at each other and being like, You're a piece of shit, uh, before someone gets shot in the face with a uh crossbow.
29:58
SPEAKER_01: Sounds like uh family dinner to me.
30:01
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I I kind of loved it, just like all of the significant others.
30:06
SPEAKER_04: You can tell that like they're all judging each other when they're meeting, and then the whole comment from the douchebag brother about like, oh, like you're a filmmaker.
30:16
SPEAKER_04: Do you make commercials?
30:18
SPEAKER_04: Like that whole conversation, I was just like, this is spot on.
30:23
SPEAKER_00: I felt so uncomfortable during this whole interaction.
30:26
SPEAKER_00: You won't be able to do it.
30:27
SPEAKER_00: And yeah, I was just like, who would say this?
30:32
SPEAKER_00: You just think it in your brain and hate people inside.
30:35
SPEAKER_00: You don't say it.
30:37
SPEAKER_00: Oh, Parker.
30:38
SPEAKER_00: Let it out, Parker.
30:40
SPEAKER_00: But then that's when things, you know, immediately ramp up when uh it is Tariq who gets shot in the face with a crossbow, and nobody really notices until I I don't know, they turn around and they're like, oh shit.
30:56
SPEAKER_00: And then things immediately escalate, and that is just 20 minutes into an hour and a half movie, and this movie I think so quickly gets into the action and manages to keep it up really consistently, and the energy is so high throughout the whole movie.
31:12
SPEAKER_00: I thought that was really impressive.
31:14
SPEAKER_04: It didn't go fast.
31:15
SPEAKER_01: Why would you choose a crossbow?
31:19
SPEAKER_04: Why not choose a crossbow?
31:22
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, classy.
31:24
SPEAKER_04: That it was powerful, fast, like yeah, they get a lot of people with that crossbow.
31:31
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
31:32
SPEAKER_00: And in a house that that that's that like classic and beautiful, you can't bring a gun in there.
31:38
SPEAKER_00: No, sir.
31:40
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I loved it.
31:42
SPEAKER_01: I would choose something a little more accurate.
31:45
SPEAKER_04: Well, you wouldn't have produced this lovely film.
31:48
SPEAKER_04: No.
31:51
SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, I have so many notes on all of the good gore and murder.
31:56
SPEAKER_00: Do y'all have any like highlights that y'all are thinking of?
31:58
SPEAKER_00: I think the biggest highlight to me would be Barbara Crampton dying with a machete through her face, and then later Z and Felix attempting to have sex on top of her body.
32:10
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
32:11
SPEAKER_04: I thought yeah, there was that.
32:13
SPEAKER_04: Um, I visceral moment for me was the hand coming out from underneath the bed.
32:20
SPEAKER_04: I thought that was like kind of uncharacteristic for this movie, but like definitely gave me the heapie jeebies.
32:29
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a very childhood scare.
32:31
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
32:32
SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it was the tiger or the fox or the sheep.
32:37
SPEAKER_01: I really enjoyed when um she used the flash.
32:42
SPEAKER_01: Oh, the camera the the murder.
32:46
SPEAKER_04: Well, I don't think it was for disorienting, I think it was for her to see.
32:51
SPEAKER_01: No, it was for her to like disorient.
32:55
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because that killer was being a complete dingus because he was looking like straight at the camera and being like, huh, she must be standing right next to it, when obviously it was a trap.
33:06
SPEAKER_00: And Erin has set this trap because she's not looking at the camera, so she gets to see every time the light flashes.
33:13
SPEAKER_00: And so I think it's kind of both where she has a vantage point and he's being blinded by the camera, and then it creates a really cool effect where they just start having like little cuts from flash to flash.
33:27
SPEAKER_00: And uh, I I do think it makes a very tense and fun moment.
33:31
SPEAKER_04: I also said those are gonna be some great photos.
33:37
SPEAKER_00: And she Aaron creates, you know, we learned that she's uh she was raised on a survivalist uh survivalist camp or compound or whatever.
33:47
SPEAKER_04: I wish I was.
33:48
SPEAKER_04: I I think that would be so useful.
33:50
SPEAKER_00: Well, she becomes this total badass throughout the movie and sets all these like home alone traps with like nail boards underneath the window, which were ingenious because she sets one where the guy can see, and so he thinks he's being all tricksy, like stepping around it, and then she set another one where he actually does step.
34:12
SPEAKER_00: And then she sets another trap with the front door that you know we get the payoff at the very end, but that has this big axe that swings through.
34:20
SPEAKER_00: So she's got some big like show-off tricks like that, but she also has a lot of like more subtle things, skills that she's built, like all of her like hand-to-hand fight skills that she's developed.
34:31
SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
34:32
SPEAKER_04: And just like tactics.
34:34
SPEAKER_04: She had like, you know, don't go in the basement, they can just pour gasoline down there and light a fire.
34:40
SPEAKER_00: Like, we need to like duh, you know, lock the windows and doors, close the windows.
34:44
SPEAKER_04: She had some water boiling, which didn't really help, but like she had it, you know.
34:49
SPEAKER_00: And she knew like we can send a text to 911 and they'll get it as a voicemail.
34:54
SPEAKER_00: She knew a lot of stuff and uh took them off guard because um, yeah, the first twist is that we learned that Felix and Z are in on it, which they're so like edgy and like uh that like you know, maybe the movie didn't want that to be such a surprise.
35:12
SPEAKER_00: But then the big surprise that her boyfriend Chris been has kind of been the mastermind behind it.
35:18
SPEAKER_00: And actually, since I've seen this movie, I would say like maybe four or five times since seeing it in theaters, uh, there's a lot of seed sown throughout the movie of him saying some relatively suspicious things uh that I was like, Oh, it's so obvious.
35:38
SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, I mean the one that comes to mind, Felix says, like, oh, they got a disrup cell disruptor.
35:44
SPEAKER_04: You can buy 'em for like thirty dollars online.
35:47
SPEAKER_04: Like, what why would you say that right then?
35:51
SPEAKER_00: A few times when he was like, I'm gonna go out and um, you know, just look around.
35:58
SPEAKER_00: I was like, ugh, idiot.
36:00
SPEAKER_00: Obvious.
36:03
SPEAKER_00: Um, so I think the big twist of the movie, obviously, is not just that the family members are behind it, but that Aaron is a survivalist.
36:13
SPEAKER_00: And I wrote down a quote from uh the uh screenwriter Simon Barrett.
36:23
SPEAKER_00: He said, uh, it was really important to us because we wanted to move make a movie that both male and female horror fans could really enjoy and get behind.
36:34
SPEAKER_00: I feel like a lot of horror movies cater more to a male audience.
36:38
SPEAKER_00: We knew we wanted to do something really different because we felt that was just missing from the genre, and that was the key to doing something new and kind of fresh.
36:47
SPEAKER_00: So the first time I read this, I was like, cater to a female audience, huh?
36:53
SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't know about that.
36:54
SPEAKER_00: But then I thought a little bit more about it.
36:57
SPEAKER_00: And if we think back to some of our first episodes, like Halloween, our very first episode, which is a little cringy.
37:04
SPEAKER_00: I do not enjoy listening to our first like five episodes that we put out at the beginning.
37:09
SPEAKER_00: But uh, I talked a lot about Carol Clover's theories about the final girl in the slasher movie.
37:16
SPEAKER_00: And one of the big ones is that she said that the journey of the final girl in the slasher movie is that she starts out as a feminine character who's scared and panicked and fearful, and she has to overcome her femininity to become more masculine to fight the killer and uh, you know, take on his manly killer traits.
37:43
SPEAKER_00: And something I think that is smart that this movie is tapping into if you're looking at that clo Carol Clover theory, is that Erin is equipped to handle these killers from the very beginning.
37:56
SPEAKER_00: There are no like girly traits that she has to overcome.
38:01
SPEAKER_00: She is prepared and ready for these killers as a woman from you know moment one of the movie.
38:08
SPEAKER_00: And so I would say that is like number one thing that this movie gets that's unique about your next.
38:15
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
38:15
SPEAKER_04: I mean, as soon as she like beat the hell out of that one killer, I was like on board.
38:24
SPEAKER_04: I was like, I'm ready for this.
38:26
SPEAKER_00: My other thought is that the twist that the killer is someone that you know is not something new to this movie at all.
38:35
SPEAKER_04: I even think Barbara Crampton in the behind the scenes says, like, I'm not so sure that they have reinvented the drama as much as just taken it to a new level.
38:45
SPEAKER_00: And I agree with that because I think that, you know, if we look back at Scream and some of our more like mystery slashers, it's all about who's the killer.
38:55
SPEAKER_00: Can we trust everyone that we know?
38:58
SPEAKER_00: And this movie plays so straight that you're supposed to trust everyone in the family, and then it's never really a um a suspicion.
39:09
SPEAKER_00: Even Crispin, they show him out outside of the house, like, oh, the cars have been, you know, tampered with.
39:17
SPEAKER_00: We can't do it.
39:18
SPEAKER_00: They show everyone as sympathetic and trustworthy before they twist it on us.
39:23
SPEAKER_00: So I think that the movie is very aware of horror uh, you know, tropes and motives before doing that so that it can play it against us.
39:31
SPEAKER_00: And that's why I think that it's funny that Rotten Tomatoes said that it can be enjoyable as a comedy for people who aren't familiar with horror.
39:39
SPEAKER_00: Because if you're not familiar with horror, I think this just seems like a very like gritty grungy slasher home invasion movie.
39:47
SPEAKER_00: So this film was shot in a historic mansion in Columbia, Missouri.
39:54
SPEAKER_00: Uh Missouri.
39:57
SPEAKER_00: Missouri.
39:58
SPEAKER_00: It was Barrett's hometown where the duo, uh, Wingarden Barrett shot a horrible way to die as well as VHS.
40:07
SPEAKER_00: They uh because this home was historic, they were not allowed to damage anything in the home.
40:14
SPEAKER_00: So the crew had to build walls inside of the home anytime they had to knock down something, or anytime like blood would splatter over wall the walls, they had to build new walls to damage so that they didn't uh hurt any of the integrity of the original home.
40:32
SPEAKER_01: So why shoot it in a home like that then?
40:35
SPEAKER_00: Did you see it?
40:36
SPEAKER_00: It was gorgeous.
40:37
SPEAKER_00: Well, you could see walls that were.
40:41
SPEAKER_00: If I could get my hands on the your next house and I had like, you know, money, I would like be all over it.
40:49
SPEAKER_00: That house looked incredible.
40:51
SPEAKER_04: Now that I'm thinking about it, they didn't really show that much of the house.
40:55
SPEAKER_04: Like it looked massive on the outside, but like you see the dining room, like the foyer, the stairwell.
41:03
SPEAKER_00: A couple of bedrooms.
41:04
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like a bedroom, and that's it.
41:07
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
41:08
SPEAKER_00: Well, sign me up for that house because it looks pretty bougie.
41:14
SPEAKER_00: Um, which all the characters do too.
41:16
SPEAKER_00: Did you notice that Drake's wife, Kelly, was wearing like that frilly collar.
41:21
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
41:22
SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh.
41:23
SPEAKER_00: I was like, um, which Queen Elizabeth like, you know, descendant are you?
41:29
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I noticed that.
41:33
SPEAKER_00: Alright, I think that is all I have for the movie wrap-up before our final questions.
41:38
SPEAKER_00: Any thoughts?
41:42
SPEAKER_01: Gore, gore, gore.
41:44
SPEAKER_04: I just the most brilliant thing that I've ever seen in a horror film was her running out the back door, jumping back in the window, and having everyone run out after her.
41:58
SPEAKER_01: Oh, I thought you were talking about the clothesline.
42:00
SPEAKER_04: Oh, well, no, we'll get there on memorable murders.
42:04
SPEAKER_00: But tactic-wise, that was there were a lot of fun surprises and smart things.
42:10
SPEAKER_00: Even when she jumps out of the window, that was so unexpected, and she has to pull that massive piece of glass out of her thigh.
42:19
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
42:20
SPEAKER_00: I mean, that was something different.
42:21
SPEAKER_04: But the brains to run outside and then jump back in the window.
42:27
SPEAKER_01: Brains.
42:28
SPEAKER_04: Brilliant.
42:29
SPEAKER_00: Uh, did you also notice um how much head trauma there is in this movie?
42:37
SPEAKER_00: Like, there's a lot of gore, but it is a lot of like head and skull gore.
42:42
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
42:43
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
42:44
SPEAKER_00: A lot of people like shot in the forehead with arrows, a lot of people stabbed in the head, eyeball blender, skull to the head never gets old, you know?
42:54
SPEAKER_04: Well, I mean, that's a skin crawley.
42:59
SPEAKER_04: I I mean, I don't think that would that's a that has to take a lot of force to get through a skull.
43:03
SPEAKER_04: Like a skull is thick.
43:05
SPEAKER_00: That's why I'm saying she's got a lot of uh you were saying chicken arms earlier, but I'm saying she must have a lot of muscle and force.
43:12
SPEAKER_01: One thing I really enjoyed about this movie was that they didn't make her dumb.
43:16
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
43:17
SPEAKER_01: She killed and they didn't come back to life.
43:21
SPEAKER_01: She just killed 'em.
43:22
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
43:23
SPEAKER_01: She made sure they were dead.
43:25
SPEAKER_00: And she honestly did her best to protect everyone else, and everyone else was dumb.
43:31
SPEAKER_00: So it was kind of fun to see like a bunch of people being well, I was going to say horror movie tropey people, but maybe that's how real people were to react.
43:42
SPEAKER_00: I don't know how I would react in this situation.
43:44
SPEAKER_00: And then to have this like one calm and uh educated character in the center of all of it, kind of orchestrating like, you do this, you do this, it's all gonna be cool.
43:56
SPEAKER_00: And then everyone dies because they can't follow instructions.
44:00
SPEAKER_04: I mean, what are we doing right now?
44:03
SPEAKER_00: Oh, and that was my other thing.
44:05
SPEAKER_00: I was going to say, a lot of people after this whole coronavirus.
44:10
SPEAKER_00: Coronavirus.
44:11
SPEAKER_00: Coronavirus.
44:12
SPEAKER_00: After this started, there was so much stuff that was like, w here are twenty, not twenty probably, but here are a certain number of pandemic uh infection horror movies to watch for coronavirus.
44:26
SPEAKER_00: And people got really sick of that pretty fast.
44:29
SPEAKER_00: So I say tired, disease-based horror, wired home invasion horror.
44:36
SPEAKER_00: Because now we're all isolated in our homes, and what's the worst thing that can happen for social distancing?
44:41
SPEAKER_00: Don't do that.
44:42
SPEAKER_00: Home invasion.
44:43
SPEAKER_01: Don't do that.
44:45
SPEAKER_01: Don't go there.
44:46
SPEAKER_00: That is my new coronavirus pandemic uh hot thing is home invasion movies.
44:55
SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
44:56
SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's real.
44:58
SPEAKER_00: That's the last thing I'd want happening.
45:00
SPEAKER_00: I would say, excuse me, are you wearing a mask?
45:02
SPEAKER_00: And they were.
45:05
SPEAKER_04: I mean, I would hate to be living alone right now, but you know.
45:09
SPEAKER_00: Okay, well, shut the fuck up, you rude.
45:12
SPEAKER_00: I have a cat.
45:14
SPEAKER_04: Hot dog will protect you.
45:16
SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
45:17
SPEAKER_00: Uh, what would you say from your next is the most memorable murder?
45:25
SPEAKER_04: I have to go with the girl running in the thing.
45:30
SPEAKER_04: Amy.
45:31
SPEAKER_04: Amy.
45:32
SPEAKER_04: Amy and the clothesline.
45:35
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was truly shocking.
45:37
SPEAKER_04: That never saw it coming.
45:41
SPEAKER_04: The build-up was perfect.
45:42
SPEAKER_00: The slow-mo, and then just and it was a very like drippy, oozy goosey, gross slit throat.
45:52
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
45:54
SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna have to say Felix with the blender.
46:02
SPEAKER_04: Oh.
46:03
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
46:03
SPEAKER_04: Good choice.
46:05
SPEAKER_04: Good choice.
46:06
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would say Chef's kiss.
46:11
SPEAKER_00: Um, let me think of another, you know, bonapetite, I don't know, a very like food scrumptious uh kill there.
46:21
SPEAKER_00: Scrumptious.
46:22
SPEAKER_00: Now I'm going to disagree with both of you.
46:24
SPEAKER_00: I think that the blender is a very good choice.
46:27
SPEAKER_00: The clothesline is a very good choice.
46:30
SPEAKER_00: My favorite, and I didn't even expect this watching this, but when Kelly goes over to the neighbor's house, has to she gets one punched in the face and thrown through the glass sliding door, and then she has to crawl through the glass, both of those disgusting.
46:47
SPEAKER_00: And then the killer, I believe the sh the lamb mask, golf club style, slams her in the face with an axe.
46:57
SPEAKER_00: I was kind of blown away and was like, I was watching it and I was like, hell yeah.
47:05
SPEAKER_04: So did that guy bring her body back?
47:09
SPEAKER_00: He brought it back and threw it through the window to surprise them.
47:14
SPEAKER_00: That is some true artistry.
47:17
SPEAKER_04: Okay, here's my question.
47:20
SPEAKER_04: Did they kill the neighbors just so no one could escape and run to the neighbors?
47:27
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a good question because I believe the dad finds a bottle of pea in one of the closets.
47:33
SPEAKER_00: So I would assume the killers have been hanging out in the house for a little bit, which is confusing because if no one was in the house, they could use the bathroom.
47:41
SPEAKER_04: Right.
47:42
SPEAKER_00: But it seems like they've been there for a little bit, and I don't know quite why they would kill the neighbors except to kind of set the scene uh that these this family can't escape and to kind of tie all the loose ends, you know, because they could run and find the neighbors.
47:58
SPEAKER_04: Well, I think those were like the only maybe they were the only neighbors like within, you know, running distance to Yeah.
48:06
SPEAKER_00: At the beginning, I think I wrote down uh Barbara Crampton says, We're so isolated up here, it might be nice to have a neighbor.
48:13
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that is my most memorable murder.
48:16
SPEAKER_00: It is a three-way draw.
48:17
SPEAKER_00: Nobody wins, you're next.
48:19
SPEAKER_00: Sorry.
48:20
SPEAKER_00: Uh what would you say on a scary scale one to five, you would rate your next?
48:29
SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna give it a solid three.
48:33
SPEAKER_04: I wasn't like scared.
48:36
SPEAKER_04: Scared, but like it was fun.
48:40
SPEAKER_04: And I it was like a yeah, cheering scared.
48:44
SPEAKER_00: And a couple of good jumps in there.
48:46
SPEAKER_00: A few like masks popping out under the bed.
48:49
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
48:50
SPEAKER_00: Uh looking through a little keyhole.
48:53
SPEAKER_04: I was definitely engaged, but I wasn't like fearful.
48:58
SPEAKER_01: I would have to agree with Caroline.
49:01
SPEAKER_01: That's a good good rating.
49:05
SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm gonna give it a four, I think, because I agree with you on everything, but I think I give it that one extra point because it is just so mean spirited.
49:16
SPEAKER_00: And I think that I finished this movie and I have a little bit of like a whew, that was grueling, and I do not feel happy afterwards.
49:26
SPEAKER_00: Whereas I watch something like Scream and I'm like Gail Weathers, you're so silly.
49:32
SPEAKER_00: So I think that this movie takes a little bit more of an emotional toll.
49:37
SPEAKER_00: Uh now finally, would not finally, but would you give your next a smash or a slash?
49:49
SPEAKER_01: Uh hard slash for me.
49:52
SPEAKER_00: What?
49:53
SPEAKER_00: Explain yourself.
49:55
SPEAKER_01: I just wasn't there for it.
49:57
SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was it was okay.
49:59
SPEAKER_04: You said all good things this whole time.
50:02
SPEAKER_04: I am shocked.
50:03
SPEAKER_00: Wait, slash.
50:04
SPEAKER_00: Were you like scared?
50:05
SPEAKER_00: Were you grossed out?
50:06
SPEAKER_00: Like, or was it just legitimately you thought it was a bad movie?
50:10
SPEAKER_00: If somebody came up to you and said, I want a good, scary, scary movie, you would figure next would not even enter your brain.
50:18
SPEAKER_00: No.
50:20
SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
50:22
SPEAKER_00: No.
50:23
SPEAKER_01: I think like I think the murder like the I think the gore murder part was good, but I think the I think it was too forced.
50:37
SPEAKER_01: Like I felt like the whole movie was just there sitting on a platter.
50:42
SPEAKER_04: The the first part was slow.
50:45
SPEAKER_04: I'll give you that.
50:46
SPEAKER_04: And that like Ian makes up his mind at the beginning of the movie and like discounts it right away if he doesn't like it.
50:53
SPEAKER_04: The first ten minutes you were sitting there, like, oh, this is such bad acting.
50:57
SPEAKER_04: I hate this movie, blah blah blah.
50:59
SPEAKER_04: And then you're just out of it.
51:00
SPEAKER_04: Which I agreed.
51:02
SPEAKER_04: The the beginning, the beginning portion, I was like not excited, and then it just reached right out and grabbed me and pulled me in.
51:11
SPEAKER_00: So you're giving it a smash, Caroline.
51:13
SPEAKER_04: I'm giving it to Smash.
51:14
SPEAKER_01: I'm so glad she can talk for me.
51:16
SPEAKER_04: It's true.
51:17
SPEAKER_04: Man, if I if I learn, roll the tapes in every movie.
51:20
SPEAKER_04: If you're not engaged in the first 10 minutes, you're out.
51:24
SPEAKER_00: Well, regardless, I'm giving this movie a huge smash.
51:28
SPEAKER_00: I must say slash.
51:29
SPEAKER_00: I mean it a huge smash because I think it's exciting, I think it's fun, I think it's gross, and uh it gives me a little like tickle in the pickle, you know, a little like, ooh, so scary.
51:44
SPEAKER_00: Um, I also want to mention, you know, speaking of some of the specifics of the technical aspects of this movie, this movie was made on a budget of only one million dollars, but it made worldwide almost 27 million.
52:06
SPEAKER_04: Wow.
52:07
SPEAKER_00: So it was a huge success and uh definitely made back its budget and its marketing and all of that jazz, and has become kind of a cult classic since.
52:18
SPEAKER_00: And I'm sure people renting it and seeing it.
52:20
SPEAKER_00: I mean, we're coming out with an episode, so they're about to see a spike in their numbers, so you know.
52:27
SPEAKER_01: I hope Amazon's in stock.
52:30
SPEAKER_00: No, I rented it on Apple TV, so you know, you gotta diversify and find your uh toilet paper uh uh I meant movie rentals on various different uh sorts of qualities.
52:47
SPEAKER_00: Oh, boom.
52:48
SPEAKER_04: This is a two-ply horror movie, I'll give you that.
52:52
SPEAKER_00: What?
52:53
SPEAKER_00: No, it is one thousand ply.
52:55
SPEAKER_00: It is solid.
52:56
SPEAKER_00: No, I'm saying scale of one to two ply.
52:58
SPEAKER_04: Scale to one to two ply.
53:00
SPEAKER_04: This is a two ply.
53:01
SPEAKER_04: Are there more than two ply?
53:03
SPEAKER_00: I don't know how many ply.
53:05
SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm not that rich.
53:06
SPEAKER_04: You can get three ply toilet paper.
53:09
SPEAKER_00: I just take a full like comforter from pottery barn to wipe.
53:13
SPEAKER_00: Quilts.
53:14
SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, exactly.
53:16
SPEAKER_01: That's why those are always so brown.
53:19
SPEAKER_00: Um now, what would you say of all the movies we've watched in season two of What's Your Favorite Scary Movie?
53:26
SPEAKER_00: Is your favorite scary movie?
53:29
SPEAKER_00: The Lodge.
53:31
SPEAKER_00: The Lodge.
53:33
SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna stick with Scream 4.
53:36
SPEAKER_00: So none of us have budged for quite a few episodes.
53:38
SPEAKER_00: I know I haven't had you on for the past couple, but you know, pretty tough race.
53:45
SPEAKER_00: We're gonna have to really amp it up uh in the future.
53:49
