- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:14Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities CE OS and even royalty Adam Cox, these
- 0:21recordings took place live from Evans Clinic in London's world
- 0:24famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:38Hi, it's Adam here. I've probably worked with over
- 0:431000 phobics. A lot of them were animal
- 0:46phobics like. Spiders and insects.
- 0:49And dogs, but also a lot of people with fear of flying, fear
- 0:53of public speaking, lots of different fears.
- 0:57This hypnosis session was actually for a client that I've
- 1:01been working with over a number of years.
- 1:03Originally they had a fear of being alone.
- 1:07It's called monophobia, where they were very dependent on
- 1:12close family members, and if those family members weren't
- 1:15around, they would get very, very anxious.
- 1:18We'd already resolved that, but they still had certain triggers.
- 1:23Anything that felt confining or trapped or that they couldn't
- 1:27get out would trigger them. And they had some dental
- 1:31treatment that they needed. And they had avoided the dentist
- 1:37not because they didn't like dentist, but because they didn't
- 1:40like how they felt in the dentist chair or even in the
- 1:44waiting room, knowing that they would be stuck in the chair and
- 1:47wouldn't have a lot of options to to get out this hypnosis
- 1:51session. Deals with the root.
- 1:54Chords and it isn't the classic visual stimulus that triggers
- 1:58the anxiety for them. It was the.
- 2:01Association with being trapped and confined.
- 2:05That really had. Their anxiety high which is why
- 2:08most of this session links. To ideas of.
- 2:12Freedom and choice and that something that is temporary and
- 2:17manageable is very, very different from something that is
- 2:22long term and unmanageable. This client had a childhood
- 2:28where they felt trapped a lot of the time.
- 2:31They grew up on an island, quite a toxic family environment.
- 2:36They didn't have a lot of choices.
- 2:37Lots of choices were made for them and that was creeping into
- 2:41their adulthood. So if you have a fear of
- 2:45dentists or doctors or being in confined spaces, you might
- 2:49connect to the idea of this session.
- 2:52It was created for an individual.
- 2:54There is many different techniques.
- 2:56I use with. Different clients.
- 2:58So if you have a fear of dentists and the root cause of
- 3:02it. Is because you feel.
- 3:03Trapped. You might get some value from
- 3:05this session, but it was incredibly calibrated to the
- 3:09individual I was working with and therefore might not fit.
- 3:12You like a glove? So if you like the idea of
- 3:15having a bespoke session, either for a fear of dentists or any
- 3:19other fear that is like that, there will be a link in the show
- 3:23notes in the description where you can book a free consultation
- 3:26call. Or you can check out my website,
- 3:29which is Adam Cox dot co.uk and there you can book a free
- 3:33consultation call. You might get some value from
- 3:36this session though, even though it was created for someone else.
- 3:39So find a quiet, comfortable place, the kind of place where
- 3:43you're not going to be distracted or disturbed.
- 3:46Relax and enjoy the session. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 4:18you breathe in, breathe in that resourceful feeling of calm and
- 4:23relaxation. And as you exhale, feel a
- 4:32wonderful feeling of release, as if any tension is melting away
- 4:39and leaving your body in that outward breath, breathing in,
- 4:49relaxation, exhaling tension. That's it.
- 4:57I want you to get a feeling then your body is being given
- 5:04permission to really let go, let go of any alertness, vigilance,
- 5:17and you know deep down all of these things there to protect.
- 5:24But what if what they're protecting you from existed in
- 5:31your past and not your present or your future?
- 5:40I want you to get a feeling that what served you well once could
- 5:46now be hindering freedom rather than facilitating it.
- 5:54So as you breathe in that resourceful feeling of
- 5:57relaxation, trust your unconscious mind to let go of
- 6:04any of those coping strategies that are like out of date apps
- 6:11on a phone, useful at one point, but may not be useful now.
- 6:22And as you breathe in and breathe out, allow your
- 6:27imagination to take you to a place that represents freedom.
- 6:35For many people, freedom is the opposite of confinement.
- 6:41So maybe you could imagine a big wide open space, nice weather,
- 6:50somewhere that you would feel calm, comfortable and relaxed.
- 7:00And when your imagination has taken you to a place like that,
- 7:05let me know by nodding your head.
- 7:10That's it. And become aware of that place,
- 7:18the environment, the temperature, perhaps sunshine,
- 7:25gentle breeze. Just connect without feeling of
- 7:31feeling safe and free. It's in and there.
- 7:42In that place. Become more aware of your
- 7:46breathing, the frequency, the rhythm, and just get a sense
- 7:57that the deeper you breathe, the more relaxed you feel, and the
- 8:03more relaxed you feel, the deeper you breathe.
- 8:08They're in that wide open landscape, no walls, no ceiling,
- 8:16just open space stretching in every direction.
- 8:24And there in that place, you could walk forward, you could
- 8:29turn around, and you could leave at any time.
- 8:36And I want you to connect with that sense of space, that sense
- 8:41of option. And that feeling of space and
- 8:49option and choice is not something you have to imagine
- 8:54creating. It's something that has always
- 8:59been there. I want you to feel that as a
- 9:04child, not every choice is yours to make, but now as an adult you
- 9:17always have choices and even when something is uncomfortable.
- 9:26You are still. Choosing.
- 9:30Choosing to stay. Choosing to leave.
- 9:37Sometimes discomfort is evidence of a change of growth.
- 9:46But there was a time in your life when your choices felt
- 9:53limited because they were limited, when environments felt
- 9:58restrictive, when emotions were intense.
- 10:08A time when shame and surveillance and conflict or
- 10:11powerlessness taught your nervous system how to respond.
- 10:21And that nervous system did something magnificent and
- 10:27intelligent. It learned to scan for danger.
- 10:34It learned to react quickly. It did what it could to protect
- 10:41you. And that response was not
- 10:46weakness. That response was survival.
- 10:56But what if those survival responses have an expiry date?
- 11:03What if they're time stamped? And what if they belong to the
- 11:07age around when they were formed?
- 11:13You don't wear the same clothes now as you did when you were
- 11:18nine years old. Certain tastes and preferences
- 11:25have changed naturally, so why would it make sense to keep
- 11:36those survival responses when you're a different age, in a
- 11:43different place, with more wisdom and skills than you've
- 11:47ever had before? Remind yourself you are not that
- 11:54age anymore, and you're not on that island and you're not in
- 12:03that place. Home is different now.
- 12:09You're not powerless. You are an adult, and you choose
- 12:16where you live, and you choose who's around you, and you choose
- 12:28when to sit down and when to stand up.
- 12:34You are you, and you are not your past.
- 12:40Even if an old emotion occasionally echoes through your
- 12:44body, an echo is not the present.
- 12:50It's just something travelling from something long finished and
- 12:55forgotten. And I want you to use the power
- 13:04of your imagination to retrain your nervous system.
- 13:13I want you to imagine that wide open space.
- 13:19There's a dentist chair, not in dentist, not in a building, just
- 13:27out there in a wide open space, no dentist around, just the
- 13:34chair. And I want you to imagine
- 13:39sitting in that chair surrounded by wide open spaces and fresh
- 13:45air, and then imagine. Imagine, imagine there is that
- 13:53light, you know, the one that can move, pointing in the
- 13:59direction of your mouth but still connect without feeling of
- 14:06choice, freedom and relaxation. And maybe you could even imagine
- 14:17a smell. Every dentist has a smell, it's
- 14:25the cleaning products they use to ensure good hygiene.
- 14:32So imagine that chair, the light, the smells and any sounds
- 14:39but out in nature. Become aware of your breathing
- 14:46and the position of your body, and as you imagine that you
- 14:55connect with all of the choices you have, you choose the rhythm
- 15:05of your breathing, you choose any movement of your hands or
- 15:12feet, you remind yourself that you chose to sat in that chair.
- 15:28And you can choose to leave at any point that you want, because
- 15:35feeling that you have a choice means knowing that you are free.
- 15:47And I want you to imagine an ethical, responsible, credible
- 15:53dentist is now there nearby. Imagine you've told them that if
- 16:03you ever move your finger in a particular way, like raising it,
- 16:10it means stop. That even if you can't say the
- 16:16words, you can communicate the words.
- 16:23And I want you to imagine it's just something very routine
- 16:32where a dentist is inspecting the teeth with one of those
- 16:40small tiny mirrors on the end of a long metal rod.
- 16:52And I want you to remind yourself that you are choosing
- 16:55to allow this. You are giving them permission
- 17:02to look around your mouth and your teeth.
- 17:07And at any point you could say stop.
- 17:09At any point you could leave. There is no physical restraint,
- 17:15no captivity. You are choosing to be in that
- 17:22chair and you are consenting to allow the dentist to explore and
- 17:31investigate your teeth. So imagine that professional
- 17:43performing maintenance on a body that you are choosing to
- 17:50protect. In nature, animals quite often
- 18:00can't do everything themselves. I want you to imagine an
- 18:07elegant, graceful Puma there in nature, resting.
- 18:19But if they had a wound on the back of their neck or their
- 18:25back, a place they couldn't reach, they would allow another
- 18:32Puma from the the pack, the pride, to tend to that wound on
- 18:48their behalf. And that's exactly what you're
- 18:54doing when you allow a dentist or a doctor to assist.
- 19:03You're giving permission for them to help you do something
- 19:09it's not possible for you to do all by yourself.
- 19:17Discomfort is not danger, and something temporary is not
- 19:23torture, and maintenance is not invasion.
- 19:32I want you to feel that you are choosing to take pride in your
- 19:41body being as healthy as it could be.
- 19:44Every part of your body, including your mouth, and notice
- 19:51something that when the meaning changes, your body's reaction
- 19:57also changes. Your nervous system reacts to
- 20:03evaluation, not reality. When you used to evaluate that
- 20:10you were trapped, your body acted like it.
- 20:16But when you evaluate that, you have chosen.
- 20:20Your body also. Responds.
- 20:25Notice how different it feels to go from powerless to consented,
- 20:38to go from suffering to a temporary voluntary procedure,
- 20:48to go from being trapped to a willing participant.
- 21:02Imagine the treatment has finished.
- 21:06You leave the chair, but imagine you're out there in this huge
- 21:14open space, and I want you to notice ropes attached to
- 21:26different parts of your body, your ankles, your arms.
- 21:33You can see all this wide open space, but you don't get to
- 21:36experience all of it yet because these ropes are not real ropes.
- 21:48These are ropes of past associations, like emotional
- 21:56chains, not real ones. The ones that used to protect
- 22:07perhaps are now confining you. And what if each rope represents
- 22:19a limitation in your present caused by something in your
- 22:25past? What if every time you avoided
- 22:30something, you are consenting to keep those ropes confining you?
- 22:36But what if you choose a different present and a
- 22:43different future based on current circumstances, not the
- 22:50past? And I want you to see that one
- 22:57rope is looking weak now. And this is a rope that
- 23:03represented fears of confinement or being trapped linked to
- 23:09dentist. It's already weakened.
- 23:15And now imagine you can either Cut the Rope, you can loosen the
- 23:26rope. I want you to imagine detaching
- 23:31yourself from that rope, just as you did with other ropes of your
- 23:39past. Notice how much freer you are
- 23:47now than you were just a few years ago, because ropes that
- 23:55existed back then no longer. I'm confining you now.
- 24:04The changes that you're already making mean that your future
- 24:10will have less ropes, not more. The future of more freedom.
- 24:18And what is freedom if it is not choices?
- 24:28And every time you choose to do what you want to do because it's
- 24:33something beneficial, useful, or helpful for you starts to wear
- 24:44away at those old ropes. Each time you choose something
- 24:55uncomfortable, but you choose it voluntarily, and each time you
- 25:02walk into a dentist by decision, not obligation, and each time
- 25:11you sit down knowing that you can leave, the ropes get
- 25:18thinner. Not through force, but through
- 25:22choice. The choice wears down the ropes,
- 25:31and these ropes only exist when there is no option and you have
- 25:36options. Think of how many choices there
- 25:43are related to a dentist. Which dentist, when you go, what
- 25:52you say beforehand, how you breathe, what you focus on, all
- 26:01the choices and whether you think of these as ropes or
- 26:08chains. You're not breaking chains by
- 26:11fighting, you're dissolving them by updating reality.
- 26:21The dentist's chair is not the island.
- 26:25The clinic is not your childhood and the present is not the past.
- 26:35And every empowered dental visit becomes evidence.
- 26:41Evidence that you are free. Evidence that you are no longer
- 26:49governed by outdated survival coding.
- 26:55What worked for your past maybe tying you down in the present.
- 27:02And you can choose to change that too.
- 27:08Because you have evidence that your nervous system can update.
- 27:15You are living proof of that. So from now on, whenever you sit
- 27:24in a chair like that, you will remember that your hand is free.
- 27:31You can signal to stop at any time, but most of all, you are
- 27:38choosing to be there. And if your body ever begins to
- 27:51activate at any point in time, you can just take 2 slow outward
- 27:59breaths, and those two long exhalations tells your nervous
- 28:08system that this is just uncomfortable and not dangerous.
- 28:16And your body listens because your body trusts your adult mind
- 28:24now, not your childhood coping strategies.
- 28:31Because you are no longer someone who is triggered into
- 28:34old environments. You are someone who walks into
- 28:40necessary experiences with awareness.
- 28:50You don't avoid maintenance. You don't flee from temporary
- 28:56discomfort. You choose long term health and
- 29:05in doing so you reinforce a new identity, an autonomous adult,
- 29:18not a trap child and certainly not a powerless teenager.
- 29:25You are an adult who chooses, and choice is the opposite of
- 29:36captivity. So let's imagine booking your
- 29:41next dentist appointment. Maybe it's a phone call, an
- 29:48e-mail, or scheduling something on an app.
- 29:52But notice how you breathe. Steady.
- 29:58No panic, just pragmatism. And then imagine arriving for
- 30:05that appointment. You walk in, Perhaps there's a
- 30:10reception desk. You sit down.
- 30:13You remember I chose this. Imagine walking into the dental
- 30:22room. You raise your hand briefly just
- 30:27to feel that it moves freely. Position yourself in the chair.
- 30:35Communicate with the dentist, your boundaries, expectations, a
- 30:42signal if you ever need them to stop.
- 30:48And imagine breathing out twice there in the chair before
- 30:51anything happens. Communicating with your nervous
- 30:57system. You are safe and you are here
- 31:00from choice. And some people, they focus on
- 31:09what the dentist is doing. Other people imagine themselves
- 31:14far away in an imaginary land, just waiting for the procedure
- 31:23to be finished. Time passes and at the end you
- 31:30stand up, leave the chair and you leave and you feel something
- 31:38wonderful. Pride, empowerment, freedom.
- 31:48The dentist was not about your teeth, it was about freedom and
- 31:57you choosing to do something and noticing how your body changes
- 32:04frees you of one more chain, one more rope attaching you to your
- 32:09past. And I wonder over the next few
- 32:13weeks and months, how many of those chains will break?
- 32:19How many of those ropes will be loosened or ripped upon?
- 32:26You are not your past and don't need to be attached by it.
- 32:37You are not your past. You are the one updating it.
- 32:42And every voluntary empowered action rewire something way
- 32:48deeper than fear. It actually rewires your
- 32:53identity. So take a slow breath in and as
- 33:00you breathe out, feel that open space around you again without
- 33:08feeling of being free, unconfined and choosing.
- 33:18And as you connect to that feeling of freedom of choice,
- 33:23it's time to return, taking all these wonderful feelings and
- 33:28changes with you. So take a deep breath.
- 33:31In through your nose and out. That's it.
- 33:37Wiggle your fingers, Wiggle your toes as I count from 1:00 to
- 33:4110:00 to awaken you. Starting to count 123 Waking up
- 33:49456. More alert 7-8.
- 33:53Open your eyes. Open your eyes. 910.
- 33:57Wide awake, wide awake. Wide awake.
