Latest / Unlocking The Paradigm Portal / Emotional Meter: The Red Line

- 0:01This morning I woke up and before my eyes were even fully
- 0:05open. I was already.
- 0:07Working now, I wasn't physically actually working.
- 0:11I hadn't moved. I was still.
- 0:12Laying horizontally and I had forgotten.
- 0:16To set the coffee. Pot so that hadn't happened yet,
- 0:19but my brain was already accumulating and it was already
- 0:23in performance mode and I was already building the list of
- 0:27what needed. To happen today, but I caught
- 0:31it. And I sat up and I made my.
- 0:34Coffee. Slowly so.
- 0:36I'm calling this the catching, and it is that tiny pause
- 0:39between the impulse and the action.
- 0:42So that's. What Today's Sunday Deep?
- 0:44Dive is about. So welcome back to unlocking the
- 0:47Paradigm Portal. My name is.
- 0:48Sarah, this is. Going to be a shorter one
- 0:51because I. Just.
- 0:53Want it to be just because and I want to share some stuff.
- 0:58So yesterday my daughter Quinn had her. 1st shift at her first
- 1:02ever job. She just turned 14 and right.
- 1:05Away she was like. I want to earn my own money so I
- 1:08can go spend it. And as a side note, she was like
- 1:11and I want to get us some Starbucks in the morning once in
- 1:14a while, which I thought was. Very sweet.
- 1:16If you don't know who Quinn is, I did a Sunday.
- 1:19Deep dive with her. I interviewed her and I got to
- 1:21do another interview with her. I don't know when.
- 1:24It was maybe like a month ago, maybe more than that.
- 1:27She is a magical Unicorn. I mean, she's, she just
- 1:31literally just turned 14 and she chose to jump into working so.
- 1:37I drove her there. And I watched her walk.
- 1:40Through the door of this ice cream shop that she hopefully
- 1:43will be. Working this summer if she
- 1:45chooses to continue and I snap my proud Mama picture and all I
- 1:50could think. Was yes, there was this
- 1:53excitement for her, but also. She has no idea what she just
- 1:56stepped into, and not in some kind of like doom doomsday kind
- 2:02of mentality, but in the way that none of us do in the very
- 2:06beginning. And it pulled.
- 2:08Me right back. To when I was 13 and I had my
- 2:12first job and how looking back now and I'm 46 now and seeing
- 2:19all. Of the ways that all.
- 2:22Like starting work really young. Created that.
- 2:24Accumulator and performer that I've been talking about for the
- 2:27last. Week so I drop.
- 2:29Her off I come home and my son. Brody.
- 2:32He'd left. Quinn's at work and I just laid
- 2:38down on the couch and I couldn't move.
- 2:41I was so incredibly physically, mentally, emotionally exhausted
- 2:47and I hadn't done anything physical.
- 2:48Yesterday I took the day off I. Silenced my phones and I
- 2:52literally spent the day like looking around seeing the things
- 2:55I could be doing but instead being like my body says rest.
- 2:59But I still. Laid in my pajamas, Quinn and I
- 3:02binged a few movies. But while we were doing that.
- 3:05I was like. Mentally and emotionally
- 3:07processing. And the thing was like, yeah, I
- 3:11wasn't doing anything but. I was still.
- 3:13Doing something but the moment that my.
- 3:16House was quiet. My body took that.
- 3:19As permission that it had been waiting.
- 3:22For and it stopped like completely.
- 3:24I couldn't do anything. I was like, I'm going to do
- 3:28something creative. I pulled out this.
- 3:29Ginormous diamond art that I. Have that is this.
- 3:32Rainbow. Hues, Tree of Life.
- 3:36And I just have been slowly chipping away and I would
- 3:38normally put on like Big Bang Theory, been re binging it for
- 3:41like the 15th time and just kind of do that.
- 3:44But literally my arms wouldn't lift.
- 3:46And here's what I want to be really honest.
- 3:49With that I realized after the fact.
- 3:52I couldn't even do that. I couldn't do anything but just
- 3:55lay on the couch. And it wasn't like burnout or
- 3:57anything. It was my body saying stop.
- 4:00And I've been ignoring it. And even though I had been quote
- 4:03UN quote, doing all of the relaxing time all day, I hadn't
- 4:07because my mind was running. I was working through stuff in
- 4:10my head. And that is just as draining.
- 4:12And I don't know if I would have stopped if anyone had been home.
- 4:16Because that, I realized, is that.
- 4:18Performer pattern and maybe you'll recognize it where taking
- 4:23that pause it only feels permissible when no one is
- 4:26watching, when the kids are gone, when the house is quiet,
- 4:29when there's no one around to witness you not doing something
- 4:32and there's no one no wonder why you're just lying there like no
- 4:37one needs anything from you and there's.
- 4:39Still a huge. List of things to do.
- 4:41But your body just says stop because.
- 4:44That stopping happened when the conditions were finally right
- 4:47for me, and that's worth sitting with, which I have done, because
- 4:52what that really means is that my body has been asking how
- 4:55long? Before the quiet.
- 4:57The house went quiet, and it just waited until it was.
- 5:00Safe to be heard. That was a pretty.
- 5:02Profound moment for me and I think many.
- 5:06Of us do this. We keep pushing through until
- 5:08the right moment, like until everyone else is taken.
- 5:11Care of or the house clears. And we have permission and by
- 5:15then that meter inside. Of us is already.
- 5:17In the red, like my battery was dropped down to 0.
- 5:21And that actually is another Quinn thing she'll say to me.
- 5:25My, what does she call it? My social meter is.
- 5:28At 0. Or my social meter is running
- 5:30low and that just means, and she's got it nailed down.
- 5:34She knows that that. Means I have to retreat.
- 5:36And self soothe. And she can identify it because
- 5:40she hasn't learned over the years.
- 5:42To disregard it so. There's so much wisdom that that
- 5:47girl carries, and actually her name means Wise 1 so.
- 5:50It's very appropriate. So here's what I know about
- 5:53myself, and I'm sharing all of this because this is what Sunday
- 5:56Deep Dives are meant to be. Because I talk.
- 5:59About all these things I go into the core wounds, the
- 6:01generational patterns, the liminal spaces.
- 6:04All of that because that is me, but I also.
- 6:07Am all of these things that we all struggle with.
- 6:10So when I sit here and say I'm in it with you, I'm freaking in
- 6:14it with you. And I share that.
- 6:16So, you know, I'm not sitting on a pedestal saying this is how
- 6:20you suddenly grow and develop. I'm constantly growing and
- 6:23developing, like right along with you and the patterns I
- 6:27talked. About this week the.
- 6:28Accumulator and the performer and that struggle to stay in the
- 6:32in between and just not know or just float and.
- 6:35Exist I have struggles. With that all the time and the
- 6:39last two days have been really perfect examples, culminating
- 6:43with this morning and laying totally horizontal and going
- 6:47into work mode literally when my brain turned on so I have.
- 6:52Both of those. Patterns, so the accumulator.
- 6:55Is that if you go? Back and check out the episodes.
- 6:57I'm not going to like dive into all of them.
- 7:00That's the one who collects the information, the understanding,
- 7:02the insight, the tasks, the responsibilities.
- 7:04They are always in gathering mode.
- 7:07They are always adding. And it's so useful and it was
- 7:11built for reasons and it kept me moving forward and it kept me
- 7:16constantly learning and growing and developing.
- 7:19But it can become quite the hang up when you keep doing that and
- 7:23aren't listening to the signs from your body.
- 7:26And the other one is the performer, and that's the one
- 7:28who manages how I'm perceived. And the way that I've gone into
- 7:33performer mode personally is it's not all like song and
- 7:37dance. My performer mode is kind of the
- 7:39inverse of that. I end up dimming my sparkle and
- 7:43I have a pretty potent sparkle. I have a friend who.
- 7:46Says I have low. Beams and high beams and I find
- 7:50I automatically will shift subconsciously into low beams to
- 7:56keep myself from being uncomfortable with others seeing
- 7:59how brightly I can just be out in the world because it
- 8:03honestly. Feels like others.
- 8:05Have a hard time holding it, like I'm taking up too much
- 8:07space and it makes me feel uncomfortable so I dim it down
- 8:13so that I don't have to feel uncomfortable and that ends up
- 8:17having me monitoring the energy. Of other people.
- 8:19And I'm adjusting accordingly and sometimes I'm even
- 8:23registering. When I'm doing it now I can
- 8:25actually recognize it. And what I've learned is that
- 8:29these aren't character. Flaws.
- 8:31And they showed up. Yesterday with the.
- 8:33Accumulator and they showed up this morning with a performer
- 8:36and. They're outdated.
- 8:38Identities. And they serve me.
- 8:40They really, really. Did, but they've also.
- 8:43Been running the show long past their usefulness.
- 8:46So the work is. Not fighting them, it's seeing
- 8:49them and saying thank you for what you did and now you can sit
- 8:53your butt down because I don't need to play it small anymore
- 8:57and I don't need to refrain from just existing.
- 9:02So there's a framework that I use with my clients and I, I
- 9:05just recently started developing this and it's called the
- 9:07Emotional Meter. So.
- 9:09Everyone has a meter and it's calibrated differently and some
- 9:13people hit their Max at a. Lower threshold like they.
- 9:15Burn out faster. Or they get sick.
- 9:18Sooner. Or they feel that.
- 9:19Overwhelm a lot quicker and that sounds like a disadvantage, but
- 9:25in some ways it's. Actually a huge gift because
- 9:27their body is. Speaking up so loudly and so
- 9:30early and others. And I am one of these people
- 9:35having much. Higher threshold for that.
- 9:37Emotional Meter. It's a higher.
- 9:39Capacity and more tolerance, which sounds like a strength and
- 9:44in many contexts. It is.
- 9:46But what I've realized. Is there is a shadow side to it?
- 9:51That you end up pushing further. I end up pushing further.
- 9:54I miss the early signals and I don't feel, you know, that that
- 9:59image of the frog in the water and then the water slowly starts
- 10:02to boil and the frog doesn't even realize it's.
- 10:04There that. Someone with a very.
- 10:06High. Emotional meter Max because you
- 10:10don't even feel the heat of the water until you're already
- 10:12cooking. So the goal that I realized.
- 10:15Is not learning to. Lower your capacity.
- 10:18It's. Raising the awareness of where
- 10:21you are on your own meter before you.
- 10:23Hit the red. And man, I don't know about you.
- 10:26But like. That is a continuous challenge
- 10:30to recognize it before. You hit the red I thought I had.
- 10:33Realized I'd maxed out because I spent my day in my pajamas
- 10:37laying on the couch with my kiddo binging movies.
- 10:41But I still was. My brain was still operating and
- 10:45then once the. House was quiet.
- 10:46My meter was like red line boom hit the ground.
- 10:50Not literally, I did hit. The couch though, so.
- 10:54There's something that most people I think maybe are aware
- 10:59of but don't really get the significance.
- 11:00And this ties into my practice of over 20 years and.
- 11:04Bodywork. Is that the?
- 11:05Signals that we get are somatic. This is not coming from your
- 11:08mind. This is why all the work I do
- 11:11with people. Is connecting the thoughts?
- 11:13Back to the body, the experiences, back to the body.
- 11:16Because when you can really tune into your body, you identify
- 11:20them so much more clearly, and then you can actually do
- 11:23something about it. So you are living.
- 11:27In a body that you are constantly tuning out.
- 11:30Because of everything. Under the sun and frankly.
- 11:32Society tells us to. Tune it out and to be more
- 11:34productive. But here's the problem.
- 11:37These signals are not dramatic. They're very, very.
- 11:39Quiet and. Subtle so.
- 11:42It can come up as like feeling really heavy and you can't
- 11:45explain why. Like I that was the word I had.
- 11:48For it at the end of the day. Yesterday I just felt.
- 11:51Heavy not. I called it exhaustion.
- 11:55Earlier. But it was heavy, my body.
- 11:58Felt like I couldn't lift it anymore and I had this like
- 12:01weight in my chest. It felt like something was just
- 12:04sitting there and my throat felt kind of the sensations.
- 12:10This is the other thing you got to learn the sensations,
- 12:12language, the sensations that I would.
- 12:14Describe it as. Were like an achy burn in my
- 12:19throat and my upper chest, almost like I was getting sick.
- 12:23But I'm not getting sick. And that inability to move that
- 12:28isn't laziness. That was that.
- 12:31Heaviness I felt. It's like the body circuit
- 12:34breaker was doing. Exactly what it was designed to
- 12:37do. If you have ever done anything
- 12:39with circuits, like something pops in your house, everything
- 12:42goes black. Right, that's what it felt like.
- 12:45And most people, myself included, don't recognize those
- 12:48signals because no one ever told them that's what they were.
- 12:52And what do we learn? We learn, You push through.
- 12:54You just keep digging deeper. You.
- 12:56Chug more coffee you drink an energy drink you.
- 12:59Go do a power workout you take. Like a 30 minute power nap.
- 13:03Which is great. But it's just a Band-Aid.
- 13:06So let's stop band aiding everything and start actually
- 13:09listening to this wisdom that is in your body.
- 13:13And I didn't try to. Fix it yesterday.
- 13:16Well, I'm not going to lie, I did.
- 13:18Try to fix it. I tried to find.
- 13:20Subtle ways that I could just. Lay down in journal.
- 13:23But I was literally so heavy I couldn't write.
- 13:27It was crazy. But my mind wasn't shut down, it
- 13:30was just sluggish and slow because the computer.
- 13:33Was overworked. And I didn't analyze it.
- 13:37I stopped trying to analyze it because the house was.
- 13:39Quiet, I just. Kind of located it and I laid
- 13:42here. And I was like.
- 13:44Breathing and going OK, this is my job.
- 13:46This is. What I do with people, I got to
- 13:48apply. It to myself what sensations am
- 13:51I feeling right now and I had to. 1st.
- 13:54Like hone into it what? Area of the.
- 13:56Body. That's when I identified.
- 13:57The upper chest part. And then what does it feel like?
- 14:01I'm like, it feels like that burning, achy, kind of almost
- 14:05stingy sore throat feeling. And that helped me kind of
- 14:09TuneIn more and I just put my awareness there and I breathed
- 14:13into it and then slowly it started to soften.
- 14:17It was literally like. And I teach this to my clients.
- 14:20The more that you just recognize it your.
- 14:23Body goes thank. You thank you.
- 14:26And the discomfort fades and it or it slows down or it
- 14:30dissipates just just the tiniest bit and that's it.
- 14:34That's the whole practice. It's not some big.
- 14:37Elaborate protocol. It's not techniques.
- 14:39It's just. Allowing yourself to pause long
- 14:43enough to notice it. Where is it?
- 14:46Living in your body right now, Can you find it?
- 14:49Are you even able to do that? If not, that's OK.
- 14:53That just means you got to. Pause a little bit.
- 14:54Longer and start tuning in more and you might need to learn more
- 14:58of the language about your own body, about words that are
- 15:01sensations. If you're saying things like I
- 15:04feel anxiety. Great.
- 15:06That's the starting point. What does anxiety?
- 15:09Feel like for you? Where are you?
- 15:11Feeling it in your body like where are the sensations calling
- 15:15to you and then? You pull at that.
- 15:17Thread more What do those sensations?
- 15:19Feel like is it? Tightness is it.
- 15:22Heaviness is it of. Rapid heart rate.
- 15:24And you get very nuanced in that so.
- 15:29You just breathe toward it without.
- 15:31Trying to move it. You just observe it.
- 15:35And the moment of locating it, of feeling the weight of what
- 15:39you've been carrying without immediately trying to put it
- 15:41down, just observing it. Remember scientist mode
- 15:44collecting data? That is what I call.
- 15:48Sitting in the hallway. That, my friends, is the liminal
- 15:51space I've been talking about. Because instead of running and
- 15:54doing and collecting and gathering and performing, you're
- 15:58just being. And I realized this.
- 16:01Week I was. Getting into all these
- 16:03conversations because that's the way that my brain operates.
- 16:06But I was also maybe going too complicated, too complex.
- 16:10It's as simple as. Just.
- 16:11Breathing into it and noticing it not doing anything about it,
- 16:15just being with it for a minute. So the hallway.
- 16:19If you didn't listen to the other episodes again, go back.
- 16:21I'm not going to dive into it, but imagine a hallway and
- 16:25there's doors on every side and each one has something that
- 16:30needs your attention, something to do.
- 16:33To decide to. Produce to respond to.
- 16:36To show up for. And most of us spend our lives
- 16:40moving from door. To door or.
- 16:42Standing in front of one door telling ourselves we should be
- 16:45at a different one. Because all those doorways are
- 16:48possibility. They're all potential.
- 16:51So what if instead of even acknowledging the doors?
- 16:55What if you just turn the lights?
- 16:56Down. Like.
- 16:58I referenced dark matter and severance those.
- 17:00Two TV shows. And the severance?
- 17:02Hallway is super bright. And the dark matter hallway.
- 17:06Is super dark, but what if you just?
- 17:08Dim the lights like drop the dimmer switch.
- 17:10Halfway. So it's not super bright, but
- 17:13it's not totally dark. And what if you just sat on the
- 17:16floor in the hallway? I mean try this.
- 17:19Literally in your house. Go wherever.
- 17:22You have a hallway and instead of going through.
- 17:24A door. Just sit on the floor and just
- 17:27notice, like look around, notice things.
- 17:29Like if you have pets, is there pet hair that's?
- 17:33Accumulated around the baseboards and are any doorways
- 17:37cracked open? And what do you see in there?
- 17:40And just notice, don't go through, just sit.
- 17:43Like consider this an active practice.
- 17:46You don't move, you don't perform, you don't accumulate,
- 17:48you just sit in the middle of. All of it.
- 17:51And let it be. What it is?
- 17:53And if somebody walks past you and is like, what?
- 17:55The hell are you doing? Just be like.
- 17:56I'm just. Pausing or totally.
- 17:59Confuse them and be like, I'm in the liminal space.
- 18:02Most people don't even know what that is.
- 18:04And it it will definitely get some funny looks, which could be
- 18:07fun. And then that's more data just
- 18:08like, huh, that was interesting because sitting in that hallway,
- 18:12that is the liminal. Space.
- 18:14It's the place between. It's the pause that.
- 18:17Most high functioning. People treat is wasted.
- 18:20Time and most burnout survivors eventually recognize as the only
- 18:26thing that kept them from completely falling apart.
- 18:30So I picked up. Quinn last night after her first
- 18:32shift and she climbed in the car and she had cash tips in her
- 18:37pocket and overwhelm on her face in equal measure.
- 18:42Because this girl. Is not used to working intensely
- 18:44with someone. Who is like?
- 18:46Barking orders at her and her boss had been in my opinion and
- 18:51from her perspective. Now I only heard from her.
- 18:53Perspective pretty hard. On her.
- 18:56She had. Snapped at her on a busy
- 18:58Saturday night with no prior training.
- 19:01But. Here's the cool thing.
- 19:03Quinn held her ground. And my girl.
- 19:06Who has struggled with? Mental health and depression and
- 19:09anxiety and overwhelm for a very long time didn't crumble.
- 19:15Like that I. Was in a such a proud Mama
- 19:17moment and when she was kind of barked at she said I'm not sure
- 19:22what to do instead of falling apart and she told me she had
- 19:26the urge. To cry, but she.
- 19:27Didn't. And she just buckled down and
- 19:29kept working and she decided that, yeah, whenever that she
- 19:34gets the call for another shift, she wants to go back.
- 19:38And on the way home, we talked about listening, about listening
- 19:41to her inner judgement, even recognizing her inner judgement.
- 19:45Because she has stellar. Natural inner judgement, because
- 19:48it hasn't been shut down by productivity, by doing, by all
- 19:52the. People with all of their
- 19:54thoughts. And opinions.
- 19:54And their own perceptions. Projected at her yet?
- 19:58And my goal as her mom is to. Foster that.
- 20:02And we talked about how one hard night doesn't tell you
- 20:05everything, but a pattern does. And about recognizing the
- 20:09difference between a boss who was overwhelmed in her own
- 20:13experience that night and a boss who was unkind.
- 20:16And right now we don't know which one it is.
- 20:19And really about not deciding from the worst moment because
- 20:25everyone has a tough night. And this woman had three new
- 20:28staff members, all starting on the same night.
- 20:31Maybe not the best. Approach.
- 20:32However, that may have been her only option and we don't know
- 20:36her well enough. So give it a chance and just
- 20:39observe. And for Quinn to tap into her
- 20:42own judgement and be able to differentiate between
- 20:46challenging moments. And we all know, like when
- 20:49you're under fire, sometimes your worst traits come out and
- 20:54all. I thought was she's. 14 and
- 20:56she's standing outside of that pot.
- 20:59She's the frog that. Hasn't even gotten into the pot
- 21:01yet and the water. Is still tepid.
- 21:04It's. Not even warm yet.
- 21:06So I started. Working at 13.
- 21:08I mean I was babysitting before that but 13 is when I had my
- 21:11first like. Job Job at this local fruit.
- 21:13And vegetable stand that many times I.
- 21:17Was left there to. Run the entire thing by myself
- 21:20at 13 now. This was definitely I don't even
- 21:24know what. Labor laws existed.
- 21:25Then but. It was off the books, it was.
- 21:27Cash under the table. Whatever.
- 21:30And nobody told me to listen to my body.
- 21:33And nobody named the signals. Nobody said, hey, the thing in
- 21:37your chest, that's information, that's tightness in your throat,
- 21:40that's your meter talking. And I don't fault anyone because
- 21:43nobody learned this stuff or even recognized it.
- 21:46Like I said in many episodes, my parents are Silent Generation.
- 21:50They are like workhorses, they just get it.
- 21:53Done so. That's what I learned.
- 21:55So there wasn't a body awareness, which as a side note
- 21:58is interesting because that led me in many ways, along with many
- 22:02other experiences, to be tremendously dissociated and
- 22:06dismissive, frankly, of my own body, which led me to going to
- 22:11massage therapy school and I went to school.
- 22:16With the thought of I have a touch.
- 22:19Aversion. I don't want to touch people.
- 22:21I don't want people touching me. But everything in my gut said.
- 22:25Go here like it was. I don't even know how to
- 22:28describe it. It was the most intense knowing
- 22:31and. Physical pull.
- 22:33I didn't have a choice, like everything in me was directing
- 22:36me there. And how fascinating looking back
- 22:3920 to 21 years later. That that was.
- 22:42Exactly what I needed and I spent all.
- 22:45These years working. With people to heal their
- 22:48relationship to their body and in doing so I came back into my
- 22:52own like it's just fascinating. So also as a side note, I'm
- 22:56curious if you think about what do you.
- 22:58Do as a job. And how is that filling some
- 23:01need in you, even if you have what may feel like a boring job?
- 23:06Like a desk job. Maybe you had a childhood or an
- 23:09upbringing or experiences. Experiences.
- 23:11Excuse me? That led to.
- 23:14A lot of instability and feeling like you had no control over the
- 23:18situation or there was. A lack of.
- 23:20Safety or knowing what was coming?
- 23:23Maybe that's why you picked a job that is.
- 23:25Stable and consistent and predictable.
- 23:30Just think about it, I. Really, I would.
- 23:32Love to hear in the comments if you get to this point in the.
- 23:34Video what your job is and let's.
- 23:37Break it down together. Because it's absolutely.
- 23:39Fascinating. So I learned it the long way and
- 23:44the hard. Way like 33 years of.
- 23:46Building patterns slowly in my body that got.
- 23:50Very. Good at pushing through.
- 23:52Quinn doesn't have to learn it that way, and neither do you.
- 23:55You can unlearn what you already learned.
- 23:57And the cool thing with that is you can work with the next
- 24:00generation. Your own children, nieces,
- 24:03nephews, anyone younger. You can learn to apply that
- 24:07wisdom that you developed to them.
- 24:10So what does your meter feel like right now?
- 24:13Like mine felt great when I woke up this morning.
- 24:17Because I had. Just crashed out now Quinn came
- 24:19home, crashed on the couch was like very dramatic about Oh my
- 24:24God, my feet. They hurt.
- 24:26I didn't. Even get to go to the.
- 24:27Bathroom, it was so busy. And all she wanted was Mac and
- 24:32cheese. So I made her Mac and cheese and
- 24:34she curled up on the couch and she was just hugging a pillow.
- 24:39And we put on a movie and honestly, I don't remember what
- 24:42it was. Oh wow, I am totally spacing.
- 24:47Oh, it was Jumanji the one. Oh shoot, the one with the.
- 24:52Rock the 1st. One, not the second one because
- 24:55we both. Knew what it was.
- 24:56It was comfortable and that girl I I finished getting her food.
- 25:00I lay on the couch because I was still.
- 25:01Pretty fatigued. And she just finishes and she
- 25:04looks at me and goes, Do you want to snuggle?
- 25:08And I'm like. Hell yes I do.
- 25:10And so this, you know, 5 foot 9 lanky 14 year old who normally
- 25:15would be shoving away like a feral.
- 25:17Cat curled up. With me and just snuggled up and
- 25:20held on to her Mama and I just like wrapped around her.
- 25:24I fell asleep, She tucked. Me in and turned the movie off
- 25:28and went to bed. It was the sweetest moment
- 25:30because her meter was maxed out. Mine was maxed.
- 25:33Out SO. What does your meter feel like
- 25:35right now? And I don't mean what you think
- 25:39you should feel and not what you've been performing, but what
- 25:43does it. Actually feel like.
- 25:45And where in your body is it living?
- 25:47Because like I said, I. Woke up this morning and my
- 25:49meter. Was back at full.
- 25:51Steam. So what did I do?
- 25:52Boom, right back into work planning mode instead of slow
- 25:56down and let my meter. Gradually be where?
- 25:59Excuse me, but where it wants to be?
- 26:01But I caught it. I caught it and I was like Nope,
- 26:04I'm going to sip my coffee and I'm going to sit here.
- 26:07So it's almost 8:00 and I am just getting.
- 26:10To this whole episode today because.
- 26:12I allowed myself to slow move, slow walk my meter.
- 26:16And you don't have to fix your meter, you don't have to move
- 26:19it. You just have to find it.
- 26:21Like you have to acknowledge that you even have one.
- 26:23And you have to. Just sit down.
- 26:25You don't have to. I'm not going to tell you.
- 26:27What to do? I encourage you try just.
- 26:29Sitting down in the hallway in the liminal space in the not
- 26:33knowing and just be with it and notice.
- 26:36What is the limit on your meter? Mine is like zero to 100.
- 26:41I have a huge amount of. Leeway, which is why I end up.
- 26:44Pushing through and pushing through and you might be someone
- 26:47that it only goes to 20 and you Max out quickly and that's OK.
- 26:52The crucial point is to be able to identify your meter.
- 26:56What it feels like. In your body when it's
- 26:58approaching that threshold of too much and allow yourself to
- 27:03slow down and allow yourself. To just be.
- 27:07And learn what are the signs from your.
- 27:09Body, let's say. For me, my meter goes to 100.
- 27:13What are the signs when I hit about 50?
- 27:15That doesn't mean stop, that just means hey, make note of
- 27:18this and maybe paste it a little bit maybe.
- 27:21Pause. For an hour and just.
- 27:24Be. And just allow myself to lay
- 27:27down for a little bit. Maybe that's the time to take
- 27:29that 30 minute power nap. Or even just 30 minutes of just
- 27:32laying and closing my eyes and resting.
- 27:35I did that too. Yesterday it was glorious.
- 27:38And if you are someone who's meter only goes up to a 20,
- 27:41that's OK. Then recognize when you're
- 27:44hitting A10. Whatever that feels like for
- 27:47you. And give.
- 27:48Yourself the space to slow it. Maybe if you're working on a
- 27:52project and you can feel that 10 approaching, you can feel the
- 27:55anxiety coming up. Or the pressure or the buzzing
- 27:59that. Was one that I get a lot like my
- 28:00body feels like it's buzzing then allow.
- 28:03Yourself to get up. And go grab a.
- 28:05Cup of coffee or. Just get up and stretch maybe?
- 28:10Take a little bathroom break or go for a walk or.
- 28:14You know, send a quick text to somebody, watch a funny cat
- 28:17video or something on Tiktok. I don't know.
- 28:19I don't. Have Tiktok but do.
- 28:22Something to decompress the meter back down.
- 28:25But you have to. Start by even recognizing you
- 28:27have a meter. So if you have any questions
- 28:30about this, I really didn't have a plan coming into this.
- 28:32I just have been rolling with it so I don't know if it even
- 28:37bounced around or made sense but.
- 28:39Give it a shot. What's your meter?
- 28:41Like I realized all week. I was talking about liminal
- 28:44space, but you can't even recognize the liminal space
- 28:47until you recognize the meter. So this.
- 28:49Is really the foundation of all of it.
- 28:51So like share, subscribe. Leave a comment, do all the
- 28:54things, whatever, I'm really curious.
- 28:57About what? Your meter limit is what job you
- 29:00went into and how you ended up there.
- 29:03And I seriously if you leave a comment I will break it down in
- 29:06the comment with you and the whole like thread thing.
- 29:09That would be. Really cool, this is one of my
- 29:11favorite things and yes I am in work mode right now and as soon
- 29:15as I'm done with this and get it all uploaded and processing I'm
- 29:19going to go back to sipping my coffee and staring out the
- 29:22window because it dropped from like 78.
- 29:24Degrees yesterday to like 45 today so it is a back to a day.
- 29:29Where I'm curling up under blankets before I head into
- 29:32work. So have a really.
- 29:35Peaceful Sunday don't even aim for great and maybe not
- 29:39productive. It's Sunday.
- 29:40This is the day for I call. Them Sunday drivers and my
- 29:43mother calls it toodling. Just kind of meander and notice
- 29:47and pause and observe and if you have.
- 29:50Kids. Snuggle your damn kids.
- 29:52Put the to do. List down and just listen to
- 29:54what they have. To say without feedback.
- 29:56Because man, the shit that comes out of their mouths is so
- 30:00fascinating. And frankly, all of us.
- 30:03Adults, this is just a. Total side note, all of us
- 30:05adults. Wish that we were.
- 30:07Seen and heard and appreciated more, especially if you had that
- 30:11messaging of children are to be seen, not heard.
- 30:15So listen to your kid without commentary, without feedback.
- 30:19And if they tell you, if they open up and they tell you
- 30:21something that they're finding difficult, even if it's
- 30:24something like getting to the next level on Minecraft, I don't
- 30:27know what kids are playing now, then just say to them, that
- 30:30sounds really. Hard.
- 30:32How are you? Getting through it?
- 30:33Or do you want to just switch and do something fun and come
- 30:36back to it? Don't fix it for them.
- 30:38Just let them sit in it. That's another reason, people.
- 30:41Avoid the hallway we. Try to fix everything for them
- 30:45and then they don't recognize that it's OK to sit in the
- 30:47discomfort. Wow, that one just came to me.
- 30:51We got to teach. These kids emotional resilience,
- 30:53but we need to learn it first ourselves.
- 30:56OK, I got to stop. Processing for the day.
- 30:59My meter is rapidly ratcheting up.
- 31:01I will be back tomorrow morning and I don't know what we're
- 31:05going to talk about. Maybe we'll get into some
- 31:06emotional resilience and sitting in the discomfort.
- 31:10All right. Have a good day.
