- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Hi there and welcome to another episode of Rise Up, Live Joy Your Way.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Whether it's morning, afternoon, or evening, I just want to say thank you to you for taking some time out of your day and spending it with me.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Today I wanted to touch on this idea of emotional detox.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: Now, in a previous episode, I talked about breath work and how breath work can be really helpful and healing in terms of releasing certain emotions that we might be holding in.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: And so I wanted to dive a little bit deeper into what an emotional detox is and why and when we might want to do that.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: So when we think about just ongoing pressures that we deal with as individuals on a daily basis, the pressures of home, the pressures of work, um constantly being exposed to social media, maybe there's a lack of free time, the constant list that needs to get done, uh getting rid of toxic emotions is actually really, really helpful for your uh mental and emotional well-being.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: And it can actually help contribute to that sense of well-being, even on a physical level, because when we act when we take the time to emotionally detox, emotionally release what we've been holding on to, our physical body also reaps the benefits of that.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: So when we don't have tools to deal with our feelings, or we're in a habit of pushing our feelings into a box and putting them aside, when what happens when we do that is we're actually keeping those toxins in, those emotional toxins in where we think that we're just avoiding them or we're pushing them aside, where we're muscling through them, but really what's happening is we're internalizing them, we're kind of pushing them down deep inside.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: And so, what an emotional detox is, is it's a process of allowing ourselves to release unresolved feelings, release overprocessed feelings that we might have that are stuck and that we're holding on to.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Some signs that you might need to think about potentially doing an emotional detox is if you are starting to feel overtired all the time, or you find that you are easily triggered, um, or maybe there's a lack of motivation.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: Oftentimes I have clients who are just they'll say, Comedy, you know, I'm just really unmotivated.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: It's, you know, we have to kind of dive into that.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: It's yeah, surface level is unmotivation or the lack of motivation, but what's going on underneath that?
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: So when you start to notice those things, you just feel off or you feel weighed down, those might be indications that an emotional detox might be beneficial to you.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: So, you know, for instance, if you are starting to feel like you have more negative feelings or more irritated than usual, it's really hard for you to see the positive in any situation.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: And I'm not saying you're you're toxic positive, right?
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Where it's like I'm only looking at the positive things.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: It's not that at all.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: But when you only see the negative, that might be an indication that you're holding on to something or you're struggling with some depressive thoughts or just feeling moody or short-tempered.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: Um, you you're easily angered or easily triggered, having some maybe you're starting to lack interest in things that you used to enjoy, or you're having trouble sleeping, or feeling really anxious about the future.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: Um, maybe you're going through some relationship problems, or like I said, anger outbursts, or maybe there's just feeling of constant overwhelm.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, if you find yourself maybe utilizing substances on a more regular basis, or you're noticing that your mind wants to ruminate and dwell on the past, those are all indications that maybe, maybe an emotional detox might be helpful.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: So the purpose of an emotional detox is it's not to get rid of the unpleasant and painful emotions.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: It's not to say, okay, I no longer feel sad or I no longer feel guilt or hurt.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: It's instead allowing you to process through and to digest those emotional experiences.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: I will often say to people that emotions, so often we try to hide and run from them, but they are really just data packets, they're here to give us some information.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: So instead of uh trying to um get rid of these, it's about allowing them in, uh allowing them in and giving it giving yourself permission to recognize that there's something here that you could learn about yourself.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: So it it's a it's an effort towards nurturing yourself rather than telling yourself that part of you is not good and pushing it away.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: So once your body's taken care of and you go through this emotional detox, what ends up happening is there's clearness.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: You have this ability to notice the triggers that do set you off.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: You have the ability to um recognize what you need in order to calm yourself down, what stimulates you, and then what can bring you back down.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: It allows you to reflect, you know, um but it allows you to reflect between um and understand your um your emotional state, mental state, but then also how your physical body reacts to things.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: And so when you have this understanding of yourself from both an emotional sense and a physical sense, it allows you to also do self-inquiry and to ask curious questions about what's happening for you instead of just constantly reacting from that emotional place.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, the last step about emitting, right?
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: So there's clearing, there's reflecting, and then there's emitting when you're in an emotional detox, you're back into the present moment and you're creating these internal boundaries and you're transforming where something may have been a reactive response into a generative response.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: How long does this last?
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Well, there are no fast solutions for when when it comes to unpacking and digesting, releasing and unwanted releasing unwanted emotions.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: So when you're ready for an emotional detox, it's just give yourself permission to process through it.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Don't rush through it.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Now I've said that when my breath work, when I do breath work with my clients, they're about 30-minute sessions, and at the end of it, there's a lot of emotions that are being released.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: So there are definitely different ways to do an emotional detox.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Really, the purpose is to allow ourselves to process through the things that we have been pushing down and pushing away.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: This goes back to the previous prop podcast around trauma.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: It allows us to process through big T traumas and little T traumas.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: It allows us to recognize that our emotional experiences are not holding us back, but we can actually learn from them.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: We can allow them to flow, we can allow them to give us information on what we need.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: And then when we allow that to happen, we can actually be more engaged in our life because we're no longer pushing parts of ourselves down and out.
