- 0:05SPEAKER_00: All right, and we are live.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Hi, hi, everyone, to another episode of Read and Write with Natasha.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, wow, people are already joining because we have a rock star.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: It's Anjanette, right?
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Yes, Anjanette Carter.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And for those who don't know,
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Anjanette has the green,
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: whatever it's called,
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: the orange check,
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: which means that she's very important, which means that she's a bestseller.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And she is a seven-figure copywriter and agency owner who helps founders
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: and freelancers build strategic personal brands and business systems
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: that generate revenue.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: All right, great.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: So, Anjanette, thank you for joining me today.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: And I warned you, I'm a journalist, so I'm going to start with the hard questions.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: So buckle up.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: I'll be nice.
- 1:00All right.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: So Anjanette,
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: so you're talking about you're a seven-figure copywriter and you want
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: to help founders and freelancers build systems that generate revenue.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Okay, I want a seven-figure revenue.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: What shall I do?
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Well, that's what you know.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: I told
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: you I'm going for the jugular.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: So tell me.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Let's do it.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Let's do it.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Well, first of all, thank you for having me, Natasha.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: I'm really excited to be here.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: And yes.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: How do you make seven figures as a writer?
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Well, look, I would say first, it's all about that first client and that first writing job.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: If you can make a dollar, you can make a hundred dollars.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: If you can make a hundred, you can make a thousand.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: If you can make a thousand, you can make 10,000 and so on and so on and so on.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: It's really all about momentum.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: I built my, uh,
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: I built my business, uh,
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: turned into my agency, um,
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: Honestly,
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: starting with marketplaces,
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: you know, I made over a million dollars on Fiverr in three years.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: So that was just as a copywriter.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: And I pulled my little trophy out, but it's holding up my ring lights at the moment.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: That's what I use my Fiverr trophy for.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: There's a trophy for Fiverr?
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: I didn't know that.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: Once you make over a million dollars, let's see.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: I've never shown this on a live.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: I've never shown this on a live, but here you go.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Janette Carter, over one million dollars.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: It's true.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: It's true.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Proof is in the pudding.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Proof is in the trophy.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Although wouldn't it be sad if I just like made myself an award and just made it up,
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: but no, I did it.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Honestly,
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: I've seen so many scammers online, so I would not be surprised with anything
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: now.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: I've been on the Fiverr LinkedIn page, spotlighted, so yes, it's real.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: And Yeah.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: So that's where I started.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: So that's where I started.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Well, that's where I started.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: I started as a writer much longer before that,
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: as I'm sure anyone listening,
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: it's like when you're a writer, you don't just become a writer.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: Everyone's usually been a writer for a very, very long time.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: But that's what started really clicking.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: And I think what I've noticed is a lot of writers and even gurus kind
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: of poo-poo marketplaces like Fiverr, Upwork, all those things.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: But there's a lot of gold.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of gold to be mined.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: So I just started stacking and stacking and getting clients and clients and clients.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: And then I started growing my personal brand on LinkedIn as a writer.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: And all of that has kind of snowballed to where I am today.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, wow.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: This is great.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Okay, so you started as copywriter and then you focused on Fiverr and you continue
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: on Fiverr and after that you started teaching people how to reach that.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: So when you teach people how to get clients and build clients,
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: is your focus mostly Fiverr or do you expand on other platforms?
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: So now, I mean, I think the best, so, you know, everything is different, right?
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Everything changes in terms of, you know, the market's always evolving.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: So I think Fiverr was great a few years ago.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: I actually wrote in my Substack like a month ago,
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: I want to say,
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: that I think the nail in the Fiverr coffin is officially there for me anyway,
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: maybe not for others.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: But I noticed, you know, Fiverr itself is having a lot of problems.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: And I noticed that Um,
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: that Fiverr itself,
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: I got a notification like a couple of months ago that said like,
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: Hey, we'll pay you $12 an hour to train our AI and not in writing.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: And we want to record you doing household tasks like vacuuming,
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: uh, you know, laundry, things like that.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: And it's like, you know, the, the writing's on the wall there.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: You know, I,
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: I think it's just going to be coming a different platform,
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: but I still think Upwork is fantastic.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: And I have a writing and marketing job board that I publish twice a week
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: on my Substack newsletter.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: So if you're not subscribed, subscribe there.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: And in that newsletter, I do always curate a handful of...
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: Yes, Chris Trammell says, Fiverr is becoming all AI solutions.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: But what I include on the breadboard,
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: which is my twice-weekly job board, which a new issue dropped today...
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: I always have like a small handful of Upwork jobs there because there's so much gold
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: because you're not competing against like hundreds of people for something.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: And a lot of really quality clients are on there.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: I've taken so many clients off of Upwork that I now have in my agency
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: that are top tier in terms of quality.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: So don't sleep on Upwork.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: Which is why I teach, I literally have a workshop called How to Land Clients on LinkedIn.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: When you click on my main Substack page, that's one of the thumbnails up there.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Because that is an excellent,
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: excellent place to find your ideal client as a marketer and writer as well.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Hmm.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Um, okay.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: So you, you teach people in addition to your job board,
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: you have the job board and then you,
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: you, do you like do training for, um, uh, people how to acquire clients?
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Because usually that's the main challenge.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: I, I personally, that, I mean,
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: at least in the beginning,
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: that was for me, the main challenge is client acquisition.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: So what do you do to spread the word about, um,
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: So currently, so there's a couple of things I do.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: So I work with founders and CEOs on my agency side who want more clients.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: And then of course,
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: through my newsletter,
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: I work with Freelancers and marketers and writers who want more clients.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: So at the end of the day, I like to blend strategies.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: So step one is growing your personal brand.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: So that's what I do for people on LinkedIn.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: And I say,
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: number one,
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: grow your personal brand on LinkedIn as a writer,
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: as a founder,
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: no matter what you're doing professionally, LinkedIn is the place to be.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: And if you're not posting content near daily there, you're missing out.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: So that's number one.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: In terms of as a writer, as a freelancer, how do you land clients on LinkedIn?
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: Yes, I have a standalone workshop.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: It's one hour and it covers everything you need to know.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: It's not rocket science, but you need some inside scoop to make it work for you.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: So you think currently the best place for solopreneurs and founders
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Or let's say mostly freelancers and solopreneurs to get clients is LinkedIn still?
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Do you think LinkedIn is still the bee's knees?
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: A hundred percent.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: A hundred percent.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: Like if let's say you're a freelancer and you have one channel to focus on,
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: I would focus on LinkedIn.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Number two, I would focus on Upwork, but absolutely LinkedIn.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: That's where the people who are hiring you are going to be.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: So regardless of where you find them, because you can find them other places, right?
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Or someone can find you.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: Maybe you send a resume somewhere.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Maybe you submit something on Upwork.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: People are going to be checking out your LinkedIn profile,
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: whether they found you on LinkedIn originally or not.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: So that is the place.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: That is like your home on the internet where you can show your expertise.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: So now with AI,
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: it's like the biggest thing,
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: I guess, since the industrial revolution that's happening.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: How did AI change client acquisition for us?
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: The old game of, let's say, of, okay, I'll post on LinkedIn every day.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: I will post case studies.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Like, that's what I do.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: I will post case studies that would attract clients.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: It took me a while to figure this out.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: And, you know,
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: you can also reach out,
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: but that's kind of the standard, let's say, pre the AI revolution era.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: What would you do differently now?
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: Okay, so the question,
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: I think the question is really how,
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: is the question more like how has AI changed my business?
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Or how AI, no, how AI changed client acquisition?
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Is the same,
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: is the old playbook of,
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: Posting on LinkedIn and hoping that would attract clients still valid.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: So I think,
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: so in terms of AI,
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: what I believe AI has changed is more on the deliverable end
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: and also what people are willing to pay for.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: You know, talking, going back to Fiverr.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: Fiverr, you know, when it comes to people looking for anything, writers, designers, anything...
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Fiverr was always like the bottom of the barrel, right?
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: In terms of that's where people went when they had no budgets.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: When AI comes in,
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: AI instantly swept all those people out because they,
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: you know, they didn't have a budget to begin with.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: So, oh, they can get it for free?
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Even if the quality isn't as good, they don't care, right?
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: It's like sometimes budget dictates all.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: So I think it wiped out things like that.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: However, when it comes to just LinkedIn, I don't think AI has made a difference.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: The only difference it's made is there's just a lot of AI slop in terms of content there.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: So there's just more content saturation.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: However,
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: LinkedIn has said even now that they are,
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: I literally wrote this like two days ago,
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: they're now currently like punishing AI slop.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: So they are,
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: what they are rewarding are personal stories,
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: personal wins,
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: things that like basically only you could write and any kind of generic,
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: oh, I threw it in chat and threw it up there is not being rewarded.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: So if you're trying to grow on LinkedIn,
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: you still, it's okay if you use AI, it just can't look like you're using AI.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: You still are able to grow,
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: just need to do it in a way that,
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: doesn't make it look like 20, 30 other people could say the same exact thing.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: So in terms of a funnel between Substack and LinkedIn, do you have a funnel?
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: And we can talk about other funnels like Kit, but do you Do you connect the two audiences?
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Do you bring one to the other?
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: How does that work?
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: I bring a lot of my LinkedIn audience.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: I bring a lot of my LinkedIn audience to Substack.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: And what I love about Substack is like,
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: I feel like Substack is an amazing, amazing place to grow, to learn.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: You know, I personally, I haven't really found clients like agency clients on Substack.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: Substack,
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: like I said,
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: is really where I help other writers and marketers to Uh,
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: so that's where I get to connect with them on a more intimate basis.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: I write about, you know, all my strategies, not, I don't just drop the job board.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: I also write about my strategies where,
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: whether it comes to content strategy,
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: all the way up to how am I getting my clients when,
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: what my month looks like, et cetera.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: So, um, I loveSubstack for that.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: And I love that on Substack, you can actually grow.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: So that's why I used to just have an email list,
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: but now Substack is my email list and it's been fantastic.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: So I do like to care.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: I like to pivot my, I have like almost 30,000 followers on LinkedIn.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: So I try to pivot that to my Substack to help grow my Substack
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: because ultimately I can have as many followers as I want on LinkedIn.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: I do believe for,
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: The best ownership you can ever have,
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: as you know,
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: like is your email,
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: are the emails and your audience and Substack is the best place for that.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: So how do you bring them to Substack from LinkedIn?
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Do you say, follow me?
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I literally just say, hey.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: I just say, hey, here, let's look at today's.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can share now.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: If you want to share what you did, because let's make this practical as well.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: If you want to steal your trade secrets.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, this,
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: I don't know if everybody can use this,
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: because this is specific to my job,
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: but for an example, on LinkedIn, I post content strategy about LinkedIn, because...
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: I'm on LinkedIn.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: So I target LinkedIn more for my agency clients,
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: but then for my freelancers,
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: I drop in like today I wrote,
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: there's a staff copywriter position paying $235,000 a year in today's breadboard
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: that made me stop scrolling.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: Here's what else made the cut.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: And then I list, oh, a direct response copywriter at $200 an hour, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: And then that Go, oh, that looks interesting.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: And then they go to my Substack.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: So how many subscribers do you have on Substack?
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: I have like five.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Let's get a live tally.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, wait, I'm on Substack, so I can't do it.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: So I have like almost like right exactly at 5,900.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: Uh-oh, Natasha, you just touched something.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Now we can't hear you.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Guys, we lost Natasha.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: What are we going to do?
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we can't hear you.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: So guys, here's a little behind the scenes.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: Before we went live, we couldn't hear Natasha.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, you should hear me.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, wait, there you are.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: Wait, what are you doing?
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Wait, what are you doing?
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: What do you keep doing, Natasha?
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: No, sorry.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: My dog was barking, so I muted, but I forgot to unmute.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: It's brain fog.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Anyways, so I was saying that you have how many?
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Let me check you.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: How many do you have?
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: I have 5,900Substack subscribers.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: 5,900.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Okay, so 5,800.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: And how did you get so many?
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: And...
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: How much time do you spend on Substack a week to be able
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: to get those many subscribers and become also a Substack bestseller?
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: So you should have how many paid subscribers do you have?
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: So here it says you have hundreds of paid subscriptions.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: That's why you got the Substack badge of honor.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: And...
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: So what is your strategy and how much time do you actually spend on Substack?
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, you run your own agency, you do all of that.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: How did you manage to do all of this?
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: So I do spend quite a bit of time on Substack.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: I'll be honest.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: It's not like,
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: oh, I spend 30 minutes on Substack a week and look at me, I'm a bestseller.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: No, I probably, let's add it up.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: So I release four newsletters a week.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: Two of them are my job boards.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: So I curate everything personally.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: I actually don't have my assistant do it.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: I curate everything personally to spot the scams and the ones that show pay.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: Right now, it's something I really need to outsource,
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: but I can't find anyone that can...
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: Do it the way I do it.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: So I do that twice a week.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: And then I also write two newsletters a week.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: One is free as a strategy, and then a second deeper strategy a week that's paid.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: So that's four newsletters a week.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: So I spend about four hours plus a week.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: And I make sure to leave at least three notes a day.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: I write three Substack notes a day.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: And then Truth be told,
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: I do have an assistant that helps me a little bit as far as like replying to things,
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: etc.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: But mostly I'm personally spending maybe like four to five hours a week on my Substack.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: So I do put in that time.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: Four hours a week.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: And how did you... Yeah.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: But how did you...
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: How did you manage to convert free subscribers to paid subscribers?
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Because,
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: for example,
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: if you want to do a live analysis,
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: I have also thousands of free subscribers,
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: but maybe I have only 13 paid subscribers.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: I think I was not that successful in converting free subscribers to paid subscribers.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: What has been your strategy to convert them?
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: So I think the number one thing when it comes to Substack is you have to,
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: you know, you have your audience, right?
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: You have to think, who is my audience?
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: What do they want?
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: What do they want at their core?
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: You know, what really does my audience want?
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: And for me, you know, when I started Substack, I had like a handful of paid subscribers.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: I was like, yeah, okay, this is going.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: I'm like, ooh, they want to hear about my life.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: Substack is going to be where I share about my business.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: I give some tips and then I talk about me.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Newsflash, people don't care about me.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: That didn't convert very well.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: Look, I always bring in my personal stories in there.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: I do share myself on my Substack journey about just what's going on
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: in my agency life and if I'm going on vacation, what I'm doing.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: I do like to share personally on my Substack.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: But people aren't going to pay for that.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: People don't pay because I'm talking about my agency work.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: People want, they want strategy.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: And I found what my clients want, they want strategy and they want work.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: So I decided to cater more to my Substack.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: Once I kind of heard what people were saying,
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: I started gearing it to more just client attraction.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: I have my how to land clients on LinkedIn.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, workshop that's available to be purchased at any time.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: And I also have, uh,
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: my breadboard to help people,
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: you know, scour, you know, freelance, uh, writing and marketing gigs.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: And then I share exactly how I do it,
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: how I do cold outreach,
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: where I'm submitting, what I do, you know, I'm still in the trenches.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: So I share all of that.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: So all of those three things combined,
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: I think has,
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: you know, people see the value in that and go, okay, I'm going to upgrade.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Hmm.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: So you think the main thing that made them upgrade was that they're looking for
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: a gig and you're targeting freelancers?
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: I think that was probably the biggest draw?
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, say that again?
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: Do you think that the job board was the biggest draw?
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: I think the job board.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: And when I really started talking less about my work and more about how I get the work.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: If that makes sense.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: So you do one webinar a week or how do you do that?
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, no.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Look, I love Substack Live.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: It's actually one of my favorite ways to interact with people.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: I'm pledging to do it more.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: You know, summer, I was on vacation a lot, so I didn't do it as much.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: But I do like to go live.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: I will say I find that doing live Substack also converts a lot.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: Paid subscribers because this is,
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: you know, it's the easiest and fastest way to build that know, like and trust value.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: Do you host others or do you just accept invites?
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: I do both.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: I do both.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: And a lot of times I'll host a live just myself.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: I'll be like, hey guys, here's what's on my mind.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: Here's what I think is important to talk about.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about it.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: You know, so I've done a bunch of lives just by myself.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, so like office hours.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, office hours.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: I should call it that.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I actually learned this from David McClure.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: I love him.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: I saw you join me, David.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I actually learned this from David that he's been hosting office hours.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Do you have a certain cadence or you do it whenever?
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: Honestly, because it's so kind of entrenched in, it really just depends with my agency work.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: When I have the time, I love to hop on a live.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: And on the weeks where I don't, when I can't make it happen, I can't make it happen.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: I'm very intentional about creating a four-day work week.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: So I work Monday through Thursday and I take Fridays off.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: So I try to do everything I can in all my business endeavors and that Monday through Thursday.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: And if it doesn't fit, then I don't do it.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: So your time is divided between your agency and Substack pretty much.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, my agency and all personal brand endeavors, let's say.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: So, yeah,
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: there's the agency side of my income and then there's the personal brand side
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: of my income.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: And that includes like LinkedIn brand deals,
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Substack,
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: you know, all, you know, all of the anything related to being paid to be myself.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: I call it anything.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: What's a LinkedIn brand deal?
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: You know, just like, sounds like so nauseam, but like, I'm like a B2B influencer.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: just people,
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: brands pay me to write LinkedIn posts for them,
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: you know, to promote their stuff, you know, sponsors.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, wow.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: And how did you get, so you have the sponsor part.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: So how do you get sponsors to sponsor your content?
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Or do you actually share that in your newsletter?
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: I can share it.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: I actually don't really share it in my newsletter just because most of the people
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: in my newsletter are not looking to monetize their personal brands.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: They're looking to just start building them and also get work on their talent side, let's say.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: But honestly, the way brand deals work for me is they just started falling in my lap.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: People just started DMing me wanting to do brand deals with me.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: So I started that and I actually just recently,
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: and when I say recently,
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: I mean like two weeks ago,
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: signed with a management agency to see if maybe I can collect more cash there,
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: right?
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: It's always about, you know, how much cash can you stack in this day and age, right?
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: So you're mostly active on social media on LinkedIn?
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: My primary channels are LinkedIn and Substack, yes.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: And so the brands come to you through
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Instagram to LinkedIn and they want you to do it online.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: And not on Instagram because usually the big influencers are on Instagram and that's
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: where the brand deals come.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because that's all B2C, right?
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: No one's going to buy a toaster that I recommend.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: No one cares about what toaster I'm using,
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: but they might care what AI transcription tool I'm using.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: So that's where brand deals come into play on the B2B side.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, interesting.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: I think honestly,
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: sponsorship and getting brands is some sort of an enigma for many freelancers
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: or solopreneurs.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: And I feel like there's, I know James Moore is one of the big guys that talk about this.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: He's just finished his challenge about getting sponsors.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: But I think there's a lot of missing knowledge on how to get that and how to get the best.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, do you agree?
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: And I feel like somehow we need to push.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: No, absolutely.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Because I have no clue.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: Like I have to make classes to figure out how do I reach to sponsors?
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: Do they reach out to me?
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: Do I create a sponsor?
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: Like all of that, it's.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: It's confusing and it's a new territory, I think.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, for many people like myself.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Well, yes.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: So I'll be honest.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: So guys,
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: one of my favorite people on Substack is Anna,
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: or maybe it's Anna,
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Anna Collin,
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: if I'm saying it,
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: C-A-L-I-N. What's funny is her, I've been following her Substack for like a year.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: It's pivoted over the last few months to be more like,
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: oh, if you're burned out on At work, be your own boss using Substack.
- 27:17SPEAKER_01: But she used to do more of just how to grow your Substack and income.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: And part of that was how to land brand deals.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: And I actually took a little mini course.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: I honestly don't remember what it was and what it was called or
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: if she offers it anymore, but she's a great resource.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: So I took her course about a year ago and it was basically just about how
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: to Reach out for brand deals, what to charge, da, da, da.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: And I thought it was so great.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: And then I have no time.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: I realized I have no time to do this.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: I started to maybe have my assistant start pitching, but it's just not my lane.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: So that's why literally a couple of weeks ago, I finally hired someone to do it for me.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: I started working with a marketing, a management company to do it for me.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: We'll see how that goes.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: Because yeah, I mean,
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: unless they fall in your lap,
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: I don't have a lot of recommendations on how to get that as well.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Other than I think you need a partner or someone to really help you with it.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: So how many...
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: So you have, how many sponsors now do you have?
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: Do you know?
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: Well, I, it's just, I, they, it's, I don't have like ongoing sponsors.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: I just, I do a deal,
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: the deal's done onto the next,
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: I was doing grand deals maybe like every like two or three months,
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: but I'd like to be doing them monthly.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: So we'll see how that goes.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: And okay.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Let me think.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: So You have an assistant.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: Does she work full time?
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: And how many employees do you have in order to be able to run an agency
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: and run Substack and all of that?
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: Like, do you have a lean operation?
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: Do you have vendors, contractors?
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: How, you know, from kind of the infrastructure of your business?
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it's a really interesting question because I used to have seven writers working for me.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Honestly,
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: when AI,
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: and I've told this story a couple of times,
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: but when AI kind of came on the scene,
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: you know, instantly all of my writers just started giving me AI slog.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Like they would be people that don't even know each other from different parts of
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: the country, giving me almost identical copy for totally different clients.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: What the hell is going on?
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: Like, and it would be,
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: and basically long story short,
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: I had to lay them off and I realized, oh wait, I can do this with AI.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: My expertise plus AI honestly replaced my writers.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: Now for the writers listening here, that should not discourage you.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: If these writers had just taken the time to learn AI and get good with it,
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: I would have never known.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: I'd be like, oh, my writers are irreplaceable.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: I can't just do AI content.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: I have these writers that are fabulous.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: But because the writers at work for me,
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: honestly, were just kind of lazy and just gave me garbage.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: It started giving me garbage.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: It was a very easy transition to make.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: So if you are a writer listening and you're looking, use AI, great, but become a master of it.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: I'm sure I don't need to tell you how to be a better writer,
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: but there's still absolutely a need for you.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: You just have to make sure you're consistently putting out great work.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: And I see a little question from Brian.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: He says,
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: is there a magic number for subscribers on Substack or LinkedIn that you need
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: to achieve in order to really generate interest by sponsors?
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: So I thought the magic number on LinkedIn,
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: I thought you needed like 10,000 followers on LinkedIn to start generating interest.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: But what's interesting is the management company that I just signed with,
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: they said they're getting deals for people with like,
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: 8,000 followers, 7,000 followers.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: They're not huge deals, but they're deals.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: So honestly, for the B2B side, you don't need much.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: Like 30,000 followers on LinkedIn is like 50,000 followers on Instagram or 60,000
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: because remember on Instagram,
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: there's so many fake You know,
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: there's so many like fake accounts and on LinkedIn,
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: like everyone's verified pretty much.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: So every follower you have on LinkedIn is worth its weight in gold.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: And that's why I say all of this,
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: like talking about brand,
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: like I know we got off on a tangent about talking about brand deals and stuff,
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: but what it all comes back to and how any of that,
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: I got to any of that is it all starts with building your personal brand on LinkedIn
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: as a writer, as a marketer, you know, whatever your niche is.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: Start building because what you want to do is the work, right?
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: But then everything else,
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: brand deals, sponsorships, you know, those are just like cherries on top.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: But you don't get those little cherries on top if you're not constantly putting in
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: the work to build your personal brand as a writer and et cetera.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: And that's also how you get inbound leads.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: You want people to come to you?
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's the dream.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: My favorite thing is when I wake up and I get a DM on LinkedIn from someone saying,
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: Hey, I've been seeing your content and I know I need to work on my LinkedIn.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: I'm a founder and I really need help.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: Can we set up a time to talk?
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: I did no work, no heavy lifting.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: They just came to me.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: Those are the inbound leads I love.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: And then Joy asks,
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: even though you are doing the writing yourself,
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: do you find it still takes time even with AI?
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm able to You know, I've become over the years, like a true master of AI writing.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: So I'm able to spit things out that are quality
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: and authentic sounding pretty quickly, which is how I was able to take over.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: How did you grow?
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: And how did you grow?
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: So like on LinkedIn, what did you do to create this following on LinkedIn?
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: Post.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: See, the number one thing is everyone goes, okay, all right, I should post on LinkedIn.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: I should do this.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: And so then they start posting on LinkedIn and then they stop.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: And they go, oh, you know, I got busy.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: I haven't done LinkedIn for a couple months.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'm going to post again.
- 33:37SPEAKER_01: Then they post for another couple of weeks and then they stop.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: So consistency is everything.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: How did I build my personal brand on LinkedIn?
- 33:45SPEAKER_01: By posting every damn day, engaging with people.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: That's how I built it.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: It's a marathon, not a sprint.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: I went on four vacations over this past summer, over the last two months.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: I never missed a day of posting.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: That meant I had to pre-schedule things, et cetera.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: But you just have to stay consistent.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: How you do one thing is how you do everything.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: I do hot infrared fitness and yoga four times a week.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: You know, and I, and I, unless I'm sick or really have something going on, I don't miss it.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: And again, that's,
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: I'm saying that as a mom with two children,
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: you know, I'm busy, you know, how you do everything.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: So if you want to build your personal brand on LinkedIn,
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: if you want to grow as a writer, as a,
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: as a marketer,
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: You have to put in the reps and you have to let people aren't going to know
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: who you are unless you go, hey, here's who I am.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: Here's who I am.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Here's what I'm doing.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: So that's, you know, especially if you send a resume, let's say you're applying for a job.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: Say you use my breadboard to, you know, look for opportunity.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: They're going to probably check your LinkedIn.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: What's on there?
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: you have to basically be showing up online,
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: showcasing yourself as the authority that you are.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: And yes, Chris, there are no hacks.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: Do you use any tools?
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: Do you use any tools for LinkedIn?
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: No, I just use the LinkedIn scheduler.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: Tools are really like frowned upon on LinkedIn.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: You can't use any automation tools.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: They will ban your account in a second.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: So no, I use zero tools on LinkedIn.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: Everything is manual.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: What about a tool like Tapleo?
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: Like there's a number of- Oh no,
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: that's even up?
- 35:33SPEAKER_01: Well, Tapleo is like, I don't use it anyway.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: I did use it at one point many, many, many moons ago.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: But LinkedIn doesn't even want you to have browser extensions running.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: Even if let's say you have a browser extension not related to LinkedIn,
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: just on other personal stuff,
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: if it's running behind the scenes of LinkedIn,
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: you can get a warning on your account.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: So- Really for everybody,
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: check those LinkedIn settings,
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: check your browser settings,
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: your browser extensions, because that can absolutely be a red flag.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: And I've gotten warnings about it too.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: So it's real.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: It's real, people.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Disable your extensions.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: Oh, wow, great.
