- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud yr
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:01Speaker 2: for millennials who want financial freedom. Today, my friends, it
- 1:04Speaker 2: is Friday, which means it is time to get my
- 1:06Speaker 2: little team, well actually not the whole team. It's just
- 1:09Speaker 2: just go to each GM becksay ed together and we're
- 1:11Speaker 2: going to be celebrating you once again, our incredible She's
- 1:15Speaker 2: on the Money community today, miss Grid. She is going
- 1:18Speaker 2: to be sharing our favorite money wins. Beck has got
- 1:21Speaker 2: a sneaky broke tip for us, and she's got a
- 1:23Speaker 2: few hot ones from the community. As well. We're going
- 1:26Speaker 2: to be answering a juicy money dilemma, which this week
- 1:28Speaker 2: is all about calculating super for retirement. And we're going
- 1:31Speaker 2: to be unpacking something you slid into our DMS about,
- 1:34Speaker 2: which is about subletting in a sharehouse, which I think
- 1:37Speaker 2: could get a little bit spicy really quickly, My loves,
- 1:41Speaker 2: how have your weeks been?
- 1:43Speaker 4: Oh you are do you want to go see you?
- 1:48Speaker 5: My week?
- 1:49Speaker 2: My week?
- 1:49Speaker 4: My week has been interesting, It's been honestly, I haven't
- 1:54Speaker 4: done much this week, and for reasons. You're going to
- 1:56Speaker 4: find out why soon. But I feel good. I feel
- 1:59Speaker 4: good the weeks. I'm ready and I'm ready to have
- 2:02Speaker 4: a good sleep.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I feel that in my bones. Yeah, I love a
- 2:05Speaker 2: good sleep. Recently I bought new pillows. This is a
- 2:09Speaker 2: very roundabout story about how I bought the wrong ones.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I did not realize how much the wrong pillow could
- 2:14Speaker 2: ruin my night. Oh no, I'm a tummy sleeper. So
- 2:18Speaker 2: like the pillow was just too lofty, just too tall.
- 2:22Speaker 2: So this is a way I couldn't get comfortable no
- 2:27Speaker 2: matter how many times I punched the pillow, made it
- 2:30Speaker 2: flat or like flippied it. No, nothing was working and
- 2:33Speaker 2: also I feel like it was eternally warm, like there
- 2:36Speaker 2: was no cold side of the pillow. So now I
- 2:38Speaker 2: have a flat pillow again, and everything has been restored.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Thank you for caring. It was legit though, what a
- 2:44Speaker 2: money loss. I bought this expensive lofty pillow, marched my
- 2:48Speaker 2: sorry but back down to km up and was like,
- 2:50Speaker 2: where's the trashiest pillow? Because that's going to make me
- 2:52Speaker 2: the happiest in anyway. That's how good my week has been, lovely.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Thank you for hearing me. Of course, just where are
- 3:00Speaker 2: we at? What's your week? Cloth?
- 3:02Speaker 6: I had a really good day on Sunday because it
- 3:03Speaker 6: was my birthday and my week stared really well. All
- 3:06Speaker 6: of my friends surprised me. I never organized things because
- 3:09Speaker 6: I'm scared people won't come, because I for a party
- 3:11Speaker 6: when I was little once and two people turned up,
- 3:12Speaker 6: and so like, you know what, it.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Could have been my fault.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Maybe I forgot the invitations.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I don't know, but oh my god, no, that is
- 3:17Speaker 2: such a thing. Probably was me, It was me?
- 3:22Speaker 4: Yeah, it possibly.
- 3:26Speaker 6: Absolutely not no, but anyway, so they all surprised me.
- 3:29Speaker 6: It was the most wholesome thing ever. They've also got
- 3:31Speaker 6: me a cake an ice cream cake, which is my
- 3:33Speaker 6: preferred kind of cake.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Did you know?
- 3:36Speaker 6: Well no, normally I get the pink white, the traditional traditional,
- 3:40Speaker 6: but they got me a Cold Rock ice cream cake
- 3:43Speaker 6: made in my exact cold Rock order.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Because how did they know that? Well, because it's.
- 3:48Speaker 6: One of my favorite places and one of my friends
- 3:50Speaker 6: and I go all the time because we live really
- 3:51Speaker 6: close together and not too far from a Cold Rock,
- 3:54Speaker 6: so they knew it by heart had a cake made
- 3:56Speaker 6: in my exact Cold Rock It was the best thing ever.
- 4:00Speaker 2: That is really how cool is that?
- 4:02Speaker 6: So if you have a friend that likes ice cream,
- 4:04Speaker 6: that is like, it was the best thing I've ever
- 4:06Speaker 6: seen in my life.
- 4:07Speaker 4: What's your Cold Rock orders?
- 4:12Speaker 2: Just whipping out of pair? It's not original. If you
- 4:16Speaker 2: copy her friends when she's already had it would.
- 4:19Speaker 6: Always be a great present. If anyone does want a
- 4:21Speaker 6: good recommendation, you get cake batter, ice cream and Ferrera
- 4:23Speaker 6: ice cream mixed together with cookie dough and double mini.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Marshmallows double minie marshmallow and they mix.
- 4:29Speaker 6: It all together and it's a delicious sweet treat. So
- 4:32Speaker 6: they go for anyone like that written it down, bring
- 4:36Speaker 6: you one next week and you can that's not it
- 4:42Speaker 6: works so cute.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Not how this works, how this works?
- 4:46Speaker 4: Just correct?
- 4:47Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 4:47Speaker 6: Should we move along? We should thank you so much
- 4:51Speaker 6: for I had a great day. I feel very like
- 4:53Speaker 6: it's so nice.
- 4:54Speaker 4: You are loved.
- 4:55Speaker 2: You are definitely loved. All right, let's jump into it, Jessica. Yes,
- 5:00Speaker 2: it's back on your side of the table. I want
- 5:02Speaker 2: to know what's been going on in our community. What
- 5:04Speaker 2: are your favorite money wins that have been shared this week?
- 5:07Speaker 6: I have a money win from Cayenne, who said I
- 5:09Speaker 6: received a job offer completely out of the blue. That
- 5:11Speaker 6: is a huge step in my career for me, and
- 5:14Speaker 6: it came with a nice little pay rise.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Beautiful.
- 5:18Speaker 6: And I just love the idea of someone just plodding
- 5:20Speaker 6: around about their day and then some one being like.
- 5:22Speaker 4: You, ma'am, deserve a job. I love the times lovely.
- 5:25Speaker 6: Next, I have a money win from Sharan, who said,
- 5:27Speaker 6: I realized that my local coals had incorrectly priced a
- 5:30Speaker 6: product as per the label, and it was actually more
- 5:33Speaker 6: expensive than it was meant to be. I brought this
- 5:35Speaker 6: to the cashier's attention, and after she cited it, we
- 5:38Speaker 6: were given the product for free. Oh, which is apparently
- 5:41Speaker 6: what I expected. That's apparently their policy, if it's wrong,
- 5:43Speaker 6: they get it for free.
- 5:44Speaker 4: How come is it?
- 5:45Speaker 1: Wow? Wow? Wow?
- 5:46Speaker 6: That one away for later because okay, I've definitely seen
- 5:48Speaker 6: things price strong and I've just got.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Me just going to coals and checking for the wrong
- 5:52Speaker 2: prices so I can get stuff for free.
- 5:54Speaker 4: How yes, that's wrong, about to be one thing in
- 5:58Speaker 4: the whole store.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Next.
- 6:00Speaker 6: I have a money lost from Melinda, but it is
- 6:02Speaker 6: in good fun. She said, I broke up with my
- 6:04Speaker 6: partner and he wants one hundred k Togo money win.
- 6:07Speaker 6: I'll no longer have an extra child in a house.
- 6:09Speaker 6: And then she put a little asterisk and she said
- 6:11Speaker 6: not an actual child, just him, yes, baby, and hundreds
- 6:16Speaker 6: of people liked the comment. So Melinda, I'm sorry that
- 6:19Speaker 6: he's being what sounds like a bit of her.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Yes.
- 6:22Speaker 6: I was going to say another word, and I was like,
- 6:24Speaker 6: no parent now yeah, well not anymore. She was single parenting.
- 6:27Speaker 6: Now she's free.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Oh genius, So love this for her.
- 6:31Speaker 4: Get a girl.
- 6:31Speaker 6: I have a money win from Alyssa, who said I
- 6:34Speaker 6: got five dollar Peter Alexander Pj's from the outlet center.
- 6:39Speaker 2: We all got multiple five dollars. I can never.
- 6:42Speaker 6: Purchase these normally as I can't justify that much on PJS,
- 6:44Speaker 6: but for five bucks, I couldn't resist. We love Peter,
- 6:48Speaker 6: Alexander PJ in this team, so yeah we do. We
- 6:51Speaker 6: literally said the other day we were near the outlet
- 6:52Speaker 6: and we went.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Go and then we did. Jess and I don't just
- 6:56Speaker 2: have one. We have multiple pairs of matching for jamans.
- 6:59Speaker 4: That's very very cute.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Yeah, we'd love at them for you next time. Don't worry.
- 7:02Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Do you want to join in?
- 7:04Speaker 4: I sleep in the nude, but I'm going to try it.
- 7:07Speaker 2: You don't have to sleep in pajamas.
- 7:09Speaker 4: They're like you just wear. They're like wear, but for
- 7:11Speaker 4: your for lounging. I see all lounging where louchwear.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Watching f Boy Island. Yeah, you're wearing your pajamas.
- 7:20Speaker 4: I do need something for fo Island exactly. The train
- 7:23Speaker 4: I'm going to do exactly.
- 7:25Speaker 6: They did a Macas collabor recentlyjamas.
- 7:28Speaker 2: That's when I can't get around. Also, Barbie O, the
- 7:30Speaker 2: Barbie one can get around the mac is one. I'm like,
- 7:34Speaker 2: I want Donalds. No, nothing was that cute.
- 7:36Speaker 4: There was nothing with the Nuggets on it either, which
- 7:38Speaker 4: I was training.
- 7:39Speaker 2: That's literally the only good thing about McDonald's.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Yeah, wasted opportunities literally.
- 7:44Speaker 6: And lastly, I have a money in from Rihannon who
- 7:46Speaker 6: said I got a free bike off marketplace to ride
- 7:49Speaker 6: with my son and partner. It needs new tires and
- 7:52Speaker 6: it has a bit of rust, but I'm confident I
- 7:53Speaker 6: can fix it up for way less than a new bike.
- 7:56Speaker 6: And you can hopefully see this through my crushed screen,
- 7:58Speaker 6: but look, it's one of those cute little I love
- 8:01Speaker 6: that that does not look like it was free. That's
- 8:04Speaker 6: very good, and that's everything that I've got this many
- 8:08Speaker 6: win love it.
- 8:09Speaker 2: She's good at a money win. Yes, yeah, I love
- 8:12Speaker 2: it and picking them out of the group ten out
- 8:14Speaker 2: of ten sad. Yes, you have some broke tips for
- 8:18Speaker 2: us this week.
- 8:19Speaker 4: I do, I do, okay. So the first one is
- 8:22Speaker 4: from Cassie, who kind of alerted me to what you
- 8:26Speaker 4: might call a rewards program of sorts, and one in
- 8:29Speaker 4: particular is Grilled. Basically, if you sign up with your
- 8:33Speaker 4: favorite Ossie Rules team, you will receive a two for
- 8:37Speaker 4: one coupon on a Monday. I believe very niche. This
- 8:40Speaker 4: is all very niche, but niche chips are broke. You
- 8:44Speaker 4: gotta be be creating.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Was that.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Ye don't think too hard about my commentary today, but
- 8:50Speaker 2: it kind of got.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Me thinking about all the other things that are out there.
- 8:53Speaker 4: And I don't have any examples.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Actually, I just got thinking about all the other which
- 8:59Speaker 2: I have.
- 9:00Speaker 4: I have zero zero, Okay, I do remember Domino's, you
- 9:04Speaker 4: know you get those things in the mail board.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Brooke got one the other day. Yeah, she got a
- 9:09Speaker 2: whole pizza delivered for free, for free, no man free.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Now my money was exchanged.
- 9:14Speaker 6: She thought it was a scam, but she did it anyway,
- 9:16Speaker 6: and turns out luckily for her.
- 9:18Speaker 4: That is incredible. I would risk my life for one pizza.
- 9:21Speaker 2: It was in Perth, oh so I'm not sure if
- 9:24Speaker 2: that was in Melbourne, but it was like a letterbox
- 9:25Speaker 2: drop and she was amazing, says I've got a free
- 9:27Speaker 2: pizza delivered. And so she got it to launched the
- 9:29Speaker 2: other day and Jess and I were envious.
- 9:31Speaker 4: That is amazing.
- 9:32Speaker 2: This is the thing, is it?
- 9:33Speaker 4: Back of receipts your mailbox. Junk mail sometimes comes in hand.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I have one.
- 9:37Speaker 6: Yeah, if you go through the KFC drive through on
- 9:40Speaker 6: your receipt, but there's usually like a QR code on
- 9:42Speaker 6: the window too, where you scan and give them feedback
- 9:44Speaker 6: on your meal and then you get a free meal
- 9:46Speaker 6: for your next meal. It's like a free chips and
- 9:49Speaker 6: a drink or free something. I haven't want any take.
- 9:52Speaker 2: A photo of that QR code and put it on story.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Absolutely, I can't please.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Everybody's coinky dink. We are just giving feedback on our
- 9:59Speaker 2: meals then, and you're saying I'll get my next one free.
- 10:02Speaker 6: We all had a great experience in Melbourne CVDKFC on
- 10:05Speaker 6: the same.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Their feedback is going to go through the roof. If
- 10:09Speaker 2: you're doing that, only leave them nice feedback. I got
- 10:15Speaker 2: my car service to actually this morning. I picked it
- 10:17Speaker 2: up and it was Spino, do you have it picked up?
- 10:20Speaker 2: And I was nearly sick and the guy was honestly
- 10:23Speaker 2: so nice. He was texting me all weekend because it
- 10:25Speaker 2: took a little bit longer and it should have. And
- 10:28Speaker 2: he was like, oh, like, you're going to get a
- 10:30Speaker 2: text in a couple of days about your experience and
- 10:32Speaker 2: I said, yeah, no worries. You're a solid ten and
- 10:34Speaker 2: he said, yep, it's actually out of five. Anything below
- 10:37Speaker 2: five is a fail. And I was like, oh, good
- 10:39Speaker 2: to know.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Oh my gosh is that some people don't anyway? So
- 10:43Speaker 4: I continue, that's how rude is it?
- 10:45Speaker 2: Though?
- 10:45Speaker 6: I was just going to say, interesting fact. Apparently when
- 10:47Speaker 6: people have to grade on a scale, like any kind
- 10:50Speaker 6: of experience, even if people are super satisfied with their experience,
- 10:54Speaker 6: they're more likely to go for if it's out of five,
- 10:57Speaker 6: four instead of a five, Like it's just human.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Nature to nominate. Oh well, it wasn't the best experience
- 11:02Speaker 2: my entire life, yeah, because you would compare it to
- 11:05Speaker 2: going to cold Rock, wouldn't you. You'd be the best
- 11:07Speaker 2: experience in my life's going to cold Rock and getting
- 11:09Speaker 2: a custom cake.
- 11:11Speaker 4: They're probably comparing everything to like the best day of
- 11:12Speaker 4: their entire lives. Maybe having a baby wasn't as good
- 11:15Speaker 4: as that. So what I'm going to say four fours
- 11:17Speaker 4: on five, but give everyone a five.
- 11:19Speaker 2: If five is over five, they deserve it.
- 11:23Speaker 6: You can tell you guys have been hard at work
- 11:25Speaker 6: today because we're getting impressions voices.
- 11:29Speaker 2: So today today Beck and I have done so we
- 11:33Speaker 2: always save the Friday drinks. Is like a little treat
- 11:36Speaker 2: at the end. Love This little treaty treat just comes
- 11:39Speaker 2: in at the very end to record. So she's like chips.
- 11:42Speaker 2: You've had a really nice day work, Jess, can I
- 11:47Speaker 2: eight hours straight recording.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Being very silly?
- 11:50Speaker 2: We are so silly, so silly. I've had so many coffees.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I've had this really bad hot chocolate that I made
- 11:56Speaker 2: in the staff kitchen. One out of ten would not
- 11:58Speaker 2: recommend Mike crew waving soy milk.
- 12:01Speaker 4: That's a one star, always bad microwaving soy milk.
- 12:04Speaker 5: You can't do it either.
- 12:05Speaker 2: It's a trap. No three coke zeros, like my body
- 12:08Speaker 2: is a temple.
- 12:10Speaker 4: To worship coke zero.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Exactly, How did you know? Anyway? Tell us your best
- 12:16Speaker 2: broad tip for the week back.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Okay, one more actually I have from Jess, not just Richie,
- 12:22Speaker 4: who says to squeeze the toilet paper to avoid over
- 12:26Speaker 4: rolling to it kind of results in you know, longer use,
- 12:28Speaker 4: which is actually a really good idea because you know,
- 12:32Speaker 4: you just like you pull the thing, the thing just
- 12:34Speaker 4: rolls and rolls. You use so much toilet paper you
- 12:35Speaker 4: probably go through it and you have to buy a
- 12:37Speaker 4: whole new twenty four pack in like a few I
- 12:40Speaker 4: don't know, for me, maybe last a week or two.
- 12:44Speaker 2: A single strange or fold. I'm a scratcher, but like,
- 12:49Speaker 2: how many like squares are you using? Well, this is
- 12:52Speaker 2: the screen and exactly as Jess says, and this is
- 12:55Speaker 2: something I didn't even notice I do. I yank it
- 12:58Speaker 2: and wait till it stops orically on its own and
- 13:01Speaker 2: Newton's law or whatever right stops.
- 13:04Speaker 6: And if you're a parent, like a lot of the time,
- 13:06Speaker 6: like you're doing it one handed. Like I know people
- 13:08Speaker 6: like if you've gone to a restroom and you've got
- 13:09Speaker 6: a child, you're like holding the trial trying to make
- 13:11Speaker 6: sure they're not touching something in that toilet they're not
- 13:13Speaker 6: supposed to whatever. You're doing it at one handed, so you
- 13:15Speaker 6: would like you just do a lat week.
- 13:17Speaker 4: But if he scrun shit or like like you kind
- 13:19Speaker 4: of like press it down, so the role you squish
- 13:22Speaker 4: the roll so it doesn't like roll is easy. Yeah,
- 13:24Speaker 4: and then you get just what you need and then
- 13:26Speaker 4: you're more like mind crab it, you know what I mean,
- 13:27Speaker 4: which is quite smart, really good idea.
- 13:29Speaker 2: In the long run, you're.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Actually going to save quite a bit of money. It's great,
- 13:32Speaker 4: thank you, Jess.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Not very aesthetic.
- 13:34Speaker 4: It's not very aesthetic, but you know, you.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Get what you get, and you don't get up exactly
- 13:38Speaker 2: right now.
- 13:40Speaker 4: My broke tip for this week. What I was going
- 13:42Speaker 4: to do was and this is probably a little bit different,
- 13:44Speaker 4: but I'm going to open up my ig app right
- 13:46Speaker 4: now and tell you exactly how much money I have
- 13:48Speaker 4: in here for the rest of the week.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Stunning.
- 13:50Speaker 4: So payday is in one week's time. I'm aware I
- 13:54Speaker 4: have fifteen dollars twelve plus twenty one. I have fifteen
- 13:58Speaker 4: dollars and thirty three cents.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Oh did you think that when she was doing fifteen
- 14:03Speaker 2: plus thirty three or whatever she said, I thought it
- 14:05Speaker 2: was going to be dollars. It was cents.
- 14:07Speaker 4: It says twenty one plus twelve cents on that edge.
- 14:10Speaker 4: But I gat a quick mass, great quy, thank you
- 14:12Speaker 4: so much. So this is what I wanted to tell you, guys,
- 14:15Speaker 4: is that I do have a few things coming up
- 14:17Speaker 4: that I still want to be doing. I don't want
- 14:19Speaker 4: to cancel on everyone because I kin't of afford to
- 14:22Speaker 4: go out because that would make me really sad, and
- 14:24Speaker 4: I don't want to be sad all week. So let
- 14:28Speaker 4: me tell you what I have coming up and how
- 14:29Speaker 4: I'm about to make.
- 14:31Speaker 2: This fifteen dollars and thirty three cents last I'm really
- 14:34Speaker 2: excited to hear this week.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Okay.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Just to preface though, before we get into this, I
- 14:39Speaker 2: feel like it needs to be disclaimed that you have
- 14:42Speaker 2: a good salary.
- 14:44Speaker 4: Now I do, but as I have mentioned in previous episodes,
- 14:47Speaker 4: I am currently back paying things.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, example like get that next step. All right,
- 14:52Speaker 2: that's fair, because I was like, where is this coming from.
- 14:56Speaker 2: I'm also bad with money, that is, I wasn't pointing
- 14:59Speaker 2: out that you bad with my We need to disclaimer.
- 15:02Speaker 2: It's not like this is the norm for you, like
- 15:05Speaker 2: as it has been, but in the future it's going
- 15:08Speaker 2: to be you can to track the journey. I'm so excited, as.
- 15:10Speaker 6: Say beans going through the journey and that's it's okay
- 15:13Speaker 6: to have fifteen dollars.
- 15:15Speaker 2: There's nothing wrong with it.
- 15:17Speaker 4: And also I should say I'm extremely comfortable with this
- 15:19Speaker 4: kind of thing. This is a very very normal week
- 15:22Speaker 4: for me. So at the end of.
- 15:23Speaker 2: How are we budgeting though, like, how are we making
- 15:26Speaker 2: this stretch?
- 15:26Speaker 4: Okay, so let me tell you what I'm about to do.
- 15:28Speaker 4: I'm ready so tonight, Yes, I am meeting my brother
- 15:33Speaker 4: for a drink at the pub. Oh how I'm not
- 15:36Speaker 4: going to drink I'm going to get soda water. And
- 15:38Speaker 4: you know what I'm going to do. I'm going to
- 15:39Speaker 4: find the pub that I know already does free soda water.
- 15:43Speaker 4: So I'm giving a shout out to Eaties on leg
- 15:45Speaker 4: On Streat in Brunswick East. I'm giving a shout out
- 15:48Speaker 4: to a few more. Retreat is also a good one
- 15:49Speaker 4: in Brunswick. Just kind of trial and error. I know
- 15:52Speaker 4: which ones don't charge me for soda water. I'm going there.
- 15:55Speaker 4: I'm going to get soda water. But before I go,
- 15:57Speaker 4: I'm going into the office. I'm going into the kitchen. Yes,
- 16:01Speaker 4: and I'm gonna find little snacks. We sometimes have bread
- 16:05Speaker 4: and cheeses in there that I could probably buy on
- 16:07Speaker 4: my own. It wouldn't cost too much. I'm gonna make
- 16:09Speaker 4: two or three cheese toasties, stunning, and take these two
- 16:13Speaker 4: or three toasties. That's gonna last me. One for lunch.
- 16:17Speaker 4: I like to have two for lunch, but I'm gonna
- 16:19Speaker 4: like spread them out. One for lunch yep, one straight
- 16:21Speaker 4: after work yep, so one for dinner yep.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Stunning.
- 16:24Speaker 4: That's my whole day. And I tell you what that
- 16:26Speaker 4: is free. There's zero dollars. That's money weir and delicious
- 16:29Speaker 4: and delicious, and then next I have little things pop
- 16:33Speaker 4: up here and there. But that's okay. I'm okay with
- 16:35Speaker 4: that because I know that I'd never have to spend
- 16:38Speaker 4: money if I'm going to be drinking soda water. This
- 16:40Speaker 4: is an issue probably for someone who does drink. That's
- 16:43Speaker 4: when you go back to the five dollar wine situation. Now,
- 16:46Speaker 4: the next thing I have, the big thing I have
- 16:47Speaker 4: coming up is trivia. Me and my best friend host
- 16:50Speaker 4: trivia in Rye on the Peninsula.
- 16:51Speaker 2: I don't around.
- 16:54Speaker 4: I've got to spend petrol money to get there. Oh
- 16:57Speaker 4: how am I going to do this?
- 16:59Speaker 2: We are asking, please?
- 17:02Speaker 4: What I'm going to do? Yes, is I'm going to
- 17:04Speaker 4: find a Wooly petrol station because I don't know if
- 17:07Speaker 4: you remember, but I have Woolas rewards points. I have
- 17:10Speaker 4: ten dollars on that that I'm going to be using
- 17:13Speaker 4: on petrol.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Only you've thought about this, yes, and that will get
- 17:17Speaker 2: me too, right, Nobody can say she's not the most
- 17:20Speaker 2: strategic woman you've.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Ever This whole week is going to be free. I
- 17:24Speaker 4: love it, so that will take me all the way
- 17:26Speaker 4: to rise. I'm going to stay there. I'm going to
- 17:27Speaker 4: stay to friend's house down there until payday. That might
- 17:30Speaker 4: be two three days. I don't mind. I'm willing to
- 17:32Speaker 4: stay down there until then.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Okay. As for food, oh no, whoe is her? She
- 17:37Speaker 2: has to go down to the beach and stay.
- 17:44Speaker 4: I'm just going to stay on the foreshore.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Like a pauper.
- 17:49Speaker 7: Just kidding.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Very very beautiful, obviously, this is the joke. For food,
- 17:53Speaker 4: What am I going to do? That is an bread baby?
- 17:58Speaker 4: Fill myself up on bread and milk. Milk is very
- 18:01Speaker 4: very very filling, servo coffees, Yeah, bread, everything else. She's
- 18:06Speaker 4: toasty butter and jam. And this is one that I've
- 18:09Speaker 4: said before, and I know that you'll probably stick with
- 18:11Speaker 4: me saying bread.
- 18:12Speaker 2: I'm not everybody's obsessed with bread.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Bread, bread, bread and anywhere you can free stuff, free
- 18:17Speaker 4: stuff anywhere you can, whether that's in your office, whether
- 18:20Speaker 4: that you have a friend that you can get food
- 18:22Speaker 4: from take away. You know, when you go to a
- 18:25Speaker 4: freeze house and they're like, this is something that I
- 18:27Speaker 4: was actually going to say next week, but here freebies
- 18:29Speaker 4: from your friend's houses. They cook stuff and you can't
- 18:31Speaker 4: be bothered taking food home and they're like, take something,
- 18:33Speaker 4: we got so much leftover.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Take it, yeah, take it, say yeah, take it. It's like
- 18:38Speaker 2: when Jess leaves my house, I'm like, take this, take that,
- 18:41Speaker 2: take this, and she's like stop it, and I'm like,
- 18:43Speaker 2: I don't know, take bax advice, take it.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Take it.
- 18:46Speaker 6: It's like shopping for free.
- 18:47Speaker 2: It's great. Take it.
- 18:49Speaker 4: So that's me and I'm assuming this fifteen dollars and
- 18:52Speaker 4: thirty three cents will last me a whole week if
- 18:56Speaker 4: I stick to my plan. I have to because I
- 18:57Speaker 4: have no other money. So that's that. And I hope
- 19:00Speaker 4: you've learned something.
- 19:02Speaker 2: You love, love love. You're a wizard at money.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Thank you so much. I'm just very used to being
- 19:08Speaker 4: living off fifteen dollars. For some reason, it's always fifteen.
- 19:11Speaker 4: I don't really know why always just turns into fifteen.
- 19:14Speaker 6: Maybe just spending the same amount of money every month,
- 19:16Speaker 6: there's a pattern there, Like that's that actual thing, Like
- 19:19Speaker 6: you're probably spending on the same things, the same amount
- 19:21Speaker 6: of money on the same things.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Maybe there's like a light bank account, a cliff number
- 19:26Speaker 2: like where I don't know. Maybe it's like fifty bucks,
- 19:29Speaker 2: and when you only see fifty bucks in your account,
- 19:31Speaker 2: you like really hold back spending and then think it's
- 19:34Speaker 2: like yeah, yeah, Like you get to fifteen and you're like, oh,
- 19:37Speaker 2: stuff's starting to get really real. And then you start
- 19:39Speaker 2: slowly slowly, and by the time you've like cut back
- 19:43Speaker 2: and cut back, it's just at fifteen and then that's
- 19:45Speaker 2: what you've got left. Maybe that's where it is, because
- 19:47Speaker 2: I feel like lots of people, especially people who live
- 19:50Speaker 2: month to month, have that like Cliff number where they
- 19:53Speaker 2: aren't worried. I aren't worried, and then you see that
- 19:55Speaker 2: number and you're like, oh, I better be responsible. Yeah
- 19:59Speaker 2: I think so there's the responsibility Cliff number. It's science.
- 20:03Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, that's very interesting.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Now that's a.
- 20:06Speaker 6: Great week of tips for me. It was really interesting.
- 20:09Speaker 6: That was so helpful.
- 20:10Speaker 4: Thank you so much. How good Thank you for no.
- 20:13Speaker 6: One more good one that I feel like we can
- 20:15Speaker 6: actually help you out with. If you have a friend
- 20:17Speaker 6: who uses a subscription service. We both obviously love Marley Spoon.
- 20:21Speaker 6: They generally do if you've been a customer of theirs
- 20:25Speaker 6: for a while, and if you're paying for boxes, which
- 20:26Speaker 6: we do, you get like a free box. You can
- 20:29Speaker 6: earn credits or it's different depending on what platform use.
- 20:32Speaker 6: I know for Maley the longer you're there, the more
- 20:33Speaker 6: credits you build up there.
- 20:34Speaker 2: You can't just like send it to new people and
- 20:37Speaker 2: everyone gets a free box. Like there's a limit on
- 20:40Speaker 2: how many people I could refer So I'm going to
- 20:42Speaker 2: send you a free box obviously, thank you. But if
- 20:45Speaker 2: you've got friends that have that referral link, like for
- 20:48Speaker 2: a free box.
- 20:49Speaker 6: Yeah, and you don't have to spend any money, they
- 20:51Speaker 6: can just go, Hey, you want to try it out?
- 20:54Speaker 2: See what's so good? Here's a box.
- 20:56Speaker 6: If you order normally, there's like three or four meals
- 20:58Speaker 6: that you get in one of those boxes. If you're
- 20:59Speaker 6: a single person that can save them double it. That's
- 21:03Speaker 6: like four or five days.
- 21:04Speaker 4: With me and god, that's good.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Okay, genius that is Jane, so smart, so smart.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Thank you so much.
- 21:12Speaker 2: You're a genius, Jessica. Let's go to a really quick
- 21:14Speaker 2: break on the flip side. I want to talk about
- 21:16Speaker 2: calculating superannuation for retirement, which I know you guys cannot wait.
- 21:20Speaker 2: And we're also unpecking a message that you slip into
- 21:23Speaker 2: our DMS about which this week is all about subletting
- 21:26Speaker 2: a share house. So don't go anywhere. My Marley Spoon friends.
- 21:35Speaker 6: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to the Money
- 21:37Speaker 6: to Lemma this week.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 21:43Speaker 2: can't solve? The She's on the Money team is here
- 21:45Speaker 2: to help. Every week we tackle your dilemmas, both big
- 21:48Speaker 2: and small, to answer your most burning money, career and
- 21:51Speaker 2: life questions. To get involved, simply head to our website
- 21:54Speaker 2: and leave us a short voice recording and you might
- 21:57Speaker 2: just find yourself on the show. Now, let's take a
- 21:59Speaker 2: listen said this wakes money dilemma.
- 22:04Speaker 7: My name is Ravi and I'm about to retire next
- 22:06Speaker 7: month with the super balance of one point six. When
- 22:10Speaker 7: I checked super calculators online, it shows that money will
- 22:15Speaker 7: finish by the age of ninety one, which is fine.
- 22:18Speaker 7: But my question to that calculator is, if we assume
- 22:22Speaker 7: five percent's return and five percent we draw on, the
- 22:25Speaker 7: super balance at the age of ninety one should be there,
- 22:29Speaker 7: but the calculator shows is gone completely. Am I missing something?
- 22:35Speaker 7: Thank you?
- 22:36Speaker 2: Yeah, take it away.
- 22:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 22:38Speaker 4: I could say a few things about this one, but
- 22:41Speaker 4: you know what, I don't want to embarrass you guys,
- 22:42Speaker 4: So what I might do is instead of you know,
- 22:44Speaker 4: obviously giving an expert opinion I might throw to one
- 22:47Speaker 4: of you.
- 22:48Speaker 6: Yes, I would say, I love you.
- 22:52Speaker 4: I want to lie love you, RAVI.
- 22:54Speaker 2: I'm so glad that you wanted to ask us. Yeah, congrats,
- 22:57Speaker 2: I'm retiring. By the way, that happening next month. There
- 23:01Speaker 2: are some gaps that I have had to fill in
- 23:03Speaker 2: your situation, which is exactly why you don't know what
- 23:07Speaker 2: to say. I was about to say, fun, could you
- 23:08Speaker 2: guys like, let me take the reins on this or
- 23:11Speaker 2: is that all good?
- 23:12Speaker 4: Straight?
- 23:12Speaker 2: I know it's all day. Yes, So I was thinking
- 23:14Speaker 2: I might give it a crack at answering this question.
- 23:17Speaker 2: We'll let it slide.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Say that's fine.
- 23:19Speaker 2: You're retiring next month, which I think is really exciting.
- 23:22Speaker 2: And so I did some calculations because you told me
- 23:25Speaker 2: that you had a one point six million dollar portfolio
- 23:29Speaker 2: and that it would last you until the age of
- 23:32Speaker 2: ninety one, but you didn't tell us how old you were.
- 23:35Speaker 2: But based on a draw down rate of five percent,
- 23:38Speaker 2: and what I think you've done with this retirement calculator,
- 23:41Speaker 2: which I'll explain to you why maybe we haven't used
- 23:44Speaker 2: it effectively because at the end of the day, one
- 23:47Speaker 2: point six million dollars should technically still exist at the
- 23:51Speaker 2: end of that period of time, because his question is
- 23:54Speaker 2: really valid. He's like, I've used this retirement calculator and
- 23:56Speaker 2: it's saying that if I draw down five percent every
- 23:59Speaker 2: single year, I'll have nothing by the time I'm ninety one.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Which if that's the case, what I think you've done
- 24:06Speaker 2: is gone to a calculator that tells you you know
- 24:09Speaker 2: what your retirement income is going to look like based
- 24:11Speaker 2: on a five percent estimated earnings rate, which is from
- 24:15Speaker 2: my perspective, a really conservative rate, Like that's what makes
- 24:18Speaker 2: me feel the most comfortable. When I was working as
- 24:21Speaker 2: a financial advisor, That's what i'd work on with my
- 24:23Speaker 2: clients because on average it's higher, but I'd prefer you
- 24:27Speaker 2: to be pleasantly surprised than in a financial pickup. So
- 24:30Speaker 2: that means of one point six million dollars, you'd be
- 24:33Speaker 2: technically making a profit each year, or your share portfolio
- 24:37Speaker 2: would be making about eighty thousand dollars a year. What
- 24:41Speaker 2: I'm assuming has happened is you've gone to this calculator
- 24:43Speaker 2: and you've put down a draw down amount of eighty
- 24:46Speaker 2: thousand dollars, and you've also assumed that you'll be making
- 24:50Speaker 2: that eighty thousand dollars from your share portfolio each year,
- 24:54Speaker 2: so that's one hundred and sixty thousand dollars you'd be
- 24:57Speaker 2: drawing down. And if that's the case, you're seventy year
- 25:00Speaker 2: years old and you're about to retire, which is really exciting. However,
- 25:04Speaker 2: the issue here is the difference between what your fund
- 25:07Speaker 2: will make and what your drawdown amount is, so each
- 25:11Speaker 2: and every single year, and this is where it gets
- 25:13Speaker 2: a little bit fickle. And to be honest, you have
- 25:15Speaker 2: one point six million dollars. Please go see a financial advisor. Please,
- 25:19Speaker 2: you have so much money. I know you've probably done
- 25:21Speaker 2: all of this on your own, and that is so
- 25:24Speaker 2: damn impressive, so cool, But now is the time to
- 25:27Speaker 2: actually get all your ducks in a row because it
- 25:30Speaker 2: could be really financially easy for you. But you have
- 25:33Speaker 2: the ability right now, and I'm so passionate about legacy,
- 25:36Speaker 2: but you have the ability to set this up for
- 25:37Speaker 2: years to come like this. One point six million dollars
- 25:40Speaker 2: doesn't need to necessarily go anywhere. However, in retirement, technically
- 25:45Speaker 2: you do have to do what's called a drawdown, and
- 25:48Speaker 2: most people do five percent of draw down, which means
- 25:51Speaker 2: you'd be taking eighty thousand dollars out as a drawdown
- 25:54Speaker 2: of your funds, so taking money outside the super environment,
- 25:58Speaker 2: and you would also be taking the profits your income
- 26:00Speaker 2: because you're now retired. I'm going to assume these are
- 26:04Speaker 2: massive assumptions because we don't have your full financial circumstances.
- 26:08Speaker 2: If you've managed to get one point six million dollars
- 26:10Speaker 2: into superannuation, you're probably pretty financially stable outside of super.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Is that a good assumption? I feel like that's pretty good. Guess.
- 26:20Speaker 2: I doubt that in retirement you need one hundred and
- 26:23Speaker 2: sixty thousand dollars tax free. So you're going to talk
- 26:27Speaker 2: to your financial advisor about putting that to work. Are
- 26:30Speaker 2: you investing it?
- 26:31Speaker 1: Yes?
- 26:32Speaker 2: Obviously tax is going to come into that at that point.
- 26:35Speaker 2: If you're going to make money from your money, you
- 26:37Speaker 2: do have to pay once it comes out of the
- 26:39Speaker 2: super environment. But what I would be doing is going
- 26:42Speaker 2: and having a chat to a financial advisor to make
- 26:45Speaker 2: sure that your drawdown amount and the amount of money
- 26:47Speaker 2: that you're making makes sense. Because if you've just done
- 26:50Speaker 2: your calculations, you are correct. After twenty years, that amount
- 26:54Speaker 2: of money completely disappears because this. You know, if you
- 26:57Speaker 2: divide one point six million dollars by twenty you actually
- 27:00Speaker 2: get eighty grand. So all of that makes sense. But
- 27:03Speaker 2: what you need to do is talk to a financial
- 27:05Speaker 2: advisor about making a plan for what your money does
- 27:08Speaker 2: once you have it in your hands. And this is, ultimately, guys,
- 27:12Speaker 2: the dream position that I would want everyone to be
- 27:15Speaker 2: in when they retire. Right, Hey, Beck, you've got more
- 27:18Speaker 2: money coming in than your lifestyle needs. Right So I
- 27:21Speaker 2: obviously don't know that as gospel for our friend Ravi,
- 27:25Speaker 2: but Ravi, if you want, shoot us a message and
- 27:27Speaker 2: I will set you up with one of the financial
- 27:29Speaker 2: advisors that I know and I trust to make sure
- 27:31Speaker 2: that you're in the best possible position, because at the
- 27:34Speaker 2: end of the day, that money isn't just going nowhere,
- 27:37Speaker 2: like it can be put to work, and that one
- 27:39Speaker 2: point six million dollars, if you're drawing it down, the
- 27:42Speaker 2: probability of you actually getting through one hundred and sixty
- 27:45Speaker 2: thousand dollars a year might not need that much. So like,
- 27:49Speaker 2: maybe you're getting through eighty thousand dollars of it, and
- 27:52Speaker 2: we take that other eighty thousand and invest it into
- 27:55Speaker 2: something else, so that hopefully you can live beyond ninety
- 27:58Speaker 2: one years financially comfortably.
- 28:00Speaker 4: Yes.
- 28:03Speaker 2: I Actually what happened on the way into the studio
- 28:06Speaker 2: is Ess dropped her notes and I picked them up,
- 28:08Speaker 2: and I was like, I'm going to take credit for this.
- 28:10Speaker 2: I see. Yeah, it happens all the time. Actually, yes, yeah, yeah,
- 28:14Speaker 2: Please don't tell anyone.
- 28:16Speaker 4: I can't trust myself not to. Yeah, but I'm not
- 28:19Speaker 4: going to today.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Okay, you can steal Jess's notes next week if I find.
- 28:23Speaker 4: That my lips are sealed.
- 28:26Speaker 6: I feel like though, we're going to have some good
- 28:28Speaker 6: things to contribute from our notes for this week's community dilemma.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes, all right, Jesse? Are you ready ready?
- 28:35Speaker 2: I think you're excited about this?
- 28:36Speaker 6: I am.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Okay. So this week we got a message and it
- 28:39Speaker 2: reads like this, Hello for exclamation points. I have a
- 28:43Speaker 2: roommate dilemma. Good to see a few people struggle with this,
- 28:46Speaker 2: not just me. So my housemate is off on placement
- 28:50Speaker 2: and she'll be gone for the next two months. We've
- 28:52Speaker 2: told her we aren't comfortable with her filling the room
- 28:55Speaker 2: with a random person, as we've had bad roommate experiences
- 28:58Speaker 2: in the past. We told her she doesn't need to
- 29:01Speaker 2: pay for any bills. But she's getting really annoyed at
- 29:04Speaker 2: us because she says she can't afford the rent as
- 29:06Speaker 2: it's a volunteer placement and she really wants us to
- 29:09Speaker 2: fill the room. I don't want to be rude about it,
- 29:11Speaker 2: and I'm trying really hard to be empathetic. But if
- 29:14Speaker 2: this was something we knew what happened prior to her
- 29:16Speaker 2: moving in, we honestly would have said, no, are we
- 29:19Speaker 2: being unreasonable not letting someone move in as it means
- 29:22Speaker 2: her finances will be tight. I feel like we are
- 29:25Speaker 2: being good by not making her pay bills while she's gone.
- 29:28Speaker 2: I'm super conflicted.
- 29:29Speaker 6: I feel like Ane Lisa and I have different opinions
- 29:32Speaker 6: on this because I can see her nodding along do something.
- 29:36Speaker 4: Looks so grumpy, she looks cranky. I'm scared to say
- 29:42Speaker 4: what I think.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Now you can go first. I'm scared to say what
- 29:46Speaker 2: I think.
- 29:46Speaker 4: I am not scared because the look on our producer's
- 29:49Speaker 4: face is the same.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Is she gon us?
- 29:52Speaker 4: Yeah, we're both gonna get used.
- 29:55Speaker 1: On.
- 29:55Speaker 2: I'm going to sit on my hands and my toes
- 29:57Speaker 2: and zip my mouth shruck. So you're gonna any travel.
- 30:00Speaker 4: All right, you know that I like to be nice
- 30:03Speaker 4: to everyone because I can definitely you know, everyone's living
- 30:05Speaker 4: their own reality. No one deserves being roasted, So I'm
- 30:09Speaker 4: not about to roast anyone here, I know.
- 30:11Speaker 2: But yes she is, but sit down because it's about
- 30:15Speaker 2: to get real hot but not roasty.
- 30:20Speaker 4: No, So the person who wrote in, yes, I can
- 30:23Speaker 4: understand the discomfort there, I can hopefully understand that. Unfortunately,
- 30:27Speaker 4: though subletting a room is I don't know, in a
- 30:30Speaker 4: sharehouse normal thing to do. I can totally understand not
- 30:34Speaker 4: wanting a stranger in there. But don't be sack. What
- 30:37Speaker 4: don't be mean? Just let someone else live in.
- 30:40Speaker 2: There while she's gone.
- 30:42Speaker 4: Absolutely, because wait wait wait wait wait wait, but this
- 30:44Speaker 4: is the other thing.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Oh, I'm so opinionated about this.
- 30:47Speaker 4: Nobody's the other thing. They said that they wouldn't let
- 30:49Speaker 4: this housemate. They wouldn't have let them move in if
- 30:51Speaker 4: they knew that they were going to have to sublet
- 30:53Speaker 4: in the future. So they were open to having another
- 30:57Speaker 4: person in the room at some point if they knew
- 30:59Speaker 4: that this person was going to like kind of float
- 31:01Speaker 4: in and out or whatever they needed to do. I
- 31:03Speaker 4: just think that subletting is fine. Like, if you all
- 31:06Speaker 4: interview a new person and you say, Okay, this person
- 31:10Speaker 4: is going to move in for six weeks, we all
- 31:11Speaker 4: like this person, it'd be the exact same process as
- 31:14Speaker 4: getting a whole new housemate. If this other person decided
- 31:18Speaker 4: that they can't actually afford it and they need to
- 31:20Speaker 4: move out, you're doing the exact same thing. Interviewing, posting pictures,
- 31:26Speaker 4: doing all this stuff. Whether this person moves out, yep,
- 31:28Speaker 4: So that person sublets that we've just picked Jess, they
- 31:31Speaker 4: can stay forever. Where is a line down the middle
- 31:36Speaker 4: of this.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Table, you're gonna you can get on the Mica. I
- 31:45Speaker 2: want to hear what Jess has got to say, because
- 31:48Speaker 2: I feel like I'm on Jess's team. I feel like it's.
- 31:50Speaker 6: Worth noting in a housemate situation, I think there are
- 31:54Speaker 6: two different kinds of housemate situations you can live in.
- 31:57Speaker 6: I personally have lived in multiple sharehouses, never with somebody
- 32:00Speaker 6: I didn't know, and that is a choice that I made. Beck,
- 32:04Speaker 6: I think your experience has been you've lived with a
- 32:07Speaker 6: whole roving group of people, people coming in, people coming out.
- 32:10Speaker 6: That's a bit more than norm for your situation. So
- 32:14Speaker 6: I think that's probably an important distinction to make upfront,
- 32:16Speaker 6: and to me, it sounds like they're three friends. They
- 32:19Speaker 6: moved in, they knew each other, They're going for kind
- 32:22Speaker 6: of like we feel like we're going to live well together.
- 32:24Speaker 6: That's the choice that they have made. My vibe on
- 32:28Speaker 6: this is, you knew you were going to go on placement,
- 32:31Speaker 6: do you know what I mean? Like, if you're undertaking
- 32:33Speaker 6: a degree, you know that placement's coming up. And I
- 32:36Speaker 6: completely agree. It is ridiculous that people should be doing
- 32:39Speaker 6: unpaid placement. My boyfriend did it last year. Yeah.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Absolutely, that's a completely different, completely different conversation.
- 32:44Speaker 6: I completely empathize with her, and I understand what a
- 32:47Speaker 6: financial strain that can put on you. That being said,
- 32:49Speaker 6: I'm of the opinion that your financial situation should not
- 32:52Speaker 6: impact the people that you're living with. And this is
- 32:54Speaker 6: a conversation that we have had before, and I.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Think I can just leave. That's fine because I'm on
- 32:59Speaker 2: the same page. Just whatever, just says I agree.
- 33:01Speaker 6: I just I especially because she knew. I think that's
- 33:04Speaker 6: something that should have been discussed when they moved in.
- 33:07Speaker 6: Hey I'm going to go on placement. I'm going to
- 33:08Speaker 6: need to sublet my room because I'm in the same
- 33:11Speaker 6: boat as her friends. If I was living with two
- 33:13Speaker 6: of my friends and they said, hey, we want to
- 33:14Speaker 6: put a random in here for two months, I would
- 33:16Speaker 6: say I'm not comfortable with that, And that is my
- 33:18Speaker 6: own personal reasons, my own personal comforts and anxieties and whatever.
- 33:22Speaker 6: But I think that they are entitled to live like
- 33:25Speaker 6: you've moved in on an agreement that the three of
- 33:27Speaker 6: us are going to live together for twelve months. That's
- 33:29Speaker 6: the other thing. I'm operating under the assumption that they're
- 33:31Speaker 6: on a twelve month lease, not a month to month lease.
- 33:34Speaker 6: So we've gone yep, me back in Victoria, we're all
- 33:36Speaker 6: moving in together for twelve months. Yeah, that's the agreement
- 33:39Speaker 6: that I've entered into. A lot of the time, at
- 33:41Speaker 6: least in Victoria, subletting is not necessarily allowed. A lot
- 33:46Speaker 6: of clauses do not allow it. True, So again, depending
- 33:50Speaker 6: on their clause, depending on their situation, that could be
- 33:52Speaker 6: a factor as well. I would not be comfortable with
- 33:55Speaker 6: some random person moving in. And I understand how they
- 33:59Speaker 6: have said. Annelie says like, get me on, get me on,
- 34:01Speaker 6: get me on. Like I understand both sides, but I
- 34:03Speaker 6: think in the same way that. I've said this for
- 34:05Speaker 6: other situations. You signed a contract saying the three of
- 34:08Speaker 6: us are going to do this, We're going to be
- 34:10Speaker 6: responsible for this, and if you were concerned about that
- 34:14Speaker 6: at the start, I think you maybe needed to have
- 34:16Speaker 6: a little bit of forethought. I think not having her
- 34:18Speaker 6: pay the bills to me seems like a good compromise.
- 34:20Speaker 6: That's what me and my partner did. He paid his
- 34:22Speaker 6: rent as per normal while he was paying to live
- 34:24Speaker 6: on placement somewhere else, and I paid our full utility bills.
- 34:27Speaker 4: Right, that's a good compromise.
- 34:29Speaker 5: Give me the mic so I can take it away.
- 34:32Speaker 5: It's a rare, rare moment where the money to talk
- 34:35Speaker 5: about this, because you know what, jay Rik, it's anelysi
- 34:38Speaker 5: here by the way, Hi, Hi, hey, so jay Rik,
- 34:42Speaker 5: I also completely agree with you and Victoria, and Victorian.
- 34:47Speaker 2: Said anything officially, I've not gone on for once. For once,
- 34:51Speaker 2: my house is a home, not a hostel.
- 34:52Speaker 6: Okay.
- 34:53Speaker 5: Literally, I would like to say, Jessica, I do completely
- 34:56Speaker 5: agree with you, and now at my age, no way
- 34:59Speaker 5: would I up with that. But what I would say is, okay,
- 35:02Speaker 5: say you are good friends and you have moved in together. Yeah,
- 35:05Speaker 5: why on earth did she not bring this up at
- 35:07Speaker 5: the start. But there are two types of housemates in
- 35:09Speaker 5: my long checkered history of sharehouses, right, and I have
- 35:12Speaker 5: had some absolute nightmares, and the people who house I'm
- 35:15Speaker 5: a fantastic housemate.
- 35:17Speaker 6: Do you think every everrying says that stole my underwear?
- 35:21Speaker 2: And I'm sure she'd say she was great. Yeah, Well
- 35:24Speaker 2: let's stick on the topic.
- 35:25Speaker 5: But I you know, we always had the housemate that
- 35:27Speaker 5: would do the flaky thing and be like, oh, I
- 35:29Speaker 5: actually I have to move out tomorrow and it's on
- 35:31Speaker 5: you to find a new person and whatever the unacceptable
- 35:33Speaker 5: share exactly, But there's a very very bond between perfect
- 35:38Speaker 5: and even legal and what is the right thing to
- 35:42Speaker 5: do and what actually happens in sharehouses. And what this
- 35:44Speaker 5: chick should have said is that she was going to
- 35:46Speaker 5: go on placement. Look for some reason she didn't, But
- 35:49Speaker 5: she is your friend. And what I would say in
- 35:53Speaker 5: this situation is she's probably not just saying she can't
- 35:58Speaker 5: pay the rent because she just wants to keep some
- 36:01Speaker 5: extra money. It's like, actually a difference between maybe doing
- 36:04Speaker 5: it and not doing it. And yes it's not she
- 36:07Speaker 5: left it way to the last minute. But if you
- 36:09Speaker 5: trust your friend. She can organize all of the what
- 36:12Speaker 5: do they call it interviews for people to come in.
- 36:14Speaker 5: You pick someone you like, and if they don't find someone,
- 36:17Speaker 5: it's two months.
- 36:18Speaker 4: Also, I mean that's eight weeks.
- 36:21Speaker 2: It's very very quick.
- 36:22Speaker 5: You don't have to say yes to anyone you don't like,
- 36:24Speaker 5: and you're like, okay, if we can't find not a
- 36:26Speaker 5: freak to move in.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Then sorry, you got to pay.
- 36:29Speaker 5: It's just in my experience, that gap between perfect normal,
- 36:32Speaker 5: stable adult life and sharehouse life is there is a
- 36:37Speaker 5: whole lot of movement in between, and it's really hard
- 36:39Speaker 5: and it gets very mucky. And yes, I have lived
- 36:42Speaker 5: with the biggest chaos lords on the planet and you
- 36:45Speaker 5: don't want to entertain that in your house. But I
- 36:48Speaker 5: just also think this person's your friend. You've moved into
- 36:51Speaker 5: with friends, like maybe you can help them out, not
- 36:55Speaker 5: let a toxic vibe in, but a short term and
- 37:01Speaker 5: vet that. You know.
- 37:03Speaker 6: But it's hard because if you've picked a friend to
- 37:05Speaker 6: move in, like you've cultivated a safe space.
- 37:08Speaker 5: From my perspective, well then you picked the wrong person
- 37:10Speaker 5: because your friend's lying to you.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Yes, I.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Well, sorry to get dramatic.
- 37:16Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I get what you mean, I just then like,
- 37:19Speaker 5: where's that friendship going to be after this? Then when
- 37:21Speaker 5: they're like, ah, no, you know is that in chatters?
- 37:23Speaker 6: There are other options though, like you can get grants
- 37:26Speaker 6: to help you pay for accommodation. I know James had
- 37:30Speaker 6: a good portion of his covered. It also depends, I
- 37:32Speaker 6: guess on what she's looking at for her alternative accommodation,
- 37:35Speaker 6: Like is she like, has she found a really affordable place,
- 37:39Speaker 6: you know, for her second home while she's on placement,
- 37:42Speaker 6: Like my partner was staying in quite frankly a trash heap,
- 37:45Speaker 6: Like it was a two meter by two meter box
- 37:47Speaker 6: with like a little square window, Like it was not
- 37:49Speaker 6: a nice place to live. But he's like, well, it
- 37:50Speaker 6: does the job, and it's cheap a f and it's
- 37:52Speaker 6: pretty much covered by my grant.
- 37:54Speaker 2: So that's it.
- 37:55Speaker 6: So I feel like there are other options here that
- 37:58Speaker 6: shouldn't necessarily mean that you have to put two other
- 38:02Speaker 6: people out on something.
- 38:04Speaker 4: That should be a last Yeah, definitely.
- 38:06Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 38:06Speaker 2: I feel like it's all fair and coming from different areas,
- 38:09Speaker 2: and I think it honestly depends on the personality of
- 38:13Speaker 2: the people that you're going to live with, right sure,
- 38:16Speaker 2: So like I could have already guessed that Beck you'd
- 38:19Speaker 2: be like, yeah, that's fine, someone else can come live
- 38:21Speaker 2: with me. Yeah, I already knew that. Jessica would have
- 38:24Speaker 2: just been like hard not. I think you already knew
- 38:27Speaker 2: both of you that I wouldn't have been comfortable with that. Yeah.
- 38:30Speaker 2: And I think it's about kind of the stability that
- 38:33Speaker 2: you're trying to create in your sharehouse. I know that
- 38:37Speaker 2: jess and I are very similar in that it was
- 38:40Speaker 2: never really just a sharehouse that we didn't care about. No, Like,
- 38:43Speaker 2: to me, that's my home, Like I have spent money
- 38:45Speaker 2: furnishing it. I have you know, invested in different things.
- 38:48Speaker 2: You know, there's been arguments along the way of who
- 38:50Speaker 2: needs to buy the dishwashing detergent and all of those
- 38:53Speaker 2: other things. But I'm the type of person that furnished
- 38:56Speaker 2: it and put you know, photos on the wall, and
- 38:58Speaker 2: these are my things. This is my home. I'm like,
- 39:01Speaker 2: it's not to me a hostel where people come and go.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Like I always moved in with people that I assumed
- 39:08Speaker 2: we would have a long term housemate relationship with. So
- 39:12Speaker 2: if someone had turned around and be like, oh, yeah,
- 39:13Speaker 2: I'm just gonna sublet my room it takes me a
- 39:16Speaker 2: lot to be comfortable with somebody.
- 39:18Speaker 3: Sure.
- 39:18Speaker 2: That whole idea that now I need to find time
- 39:22Speaker 2: in my schedule to interview people to potentially move into
- 39:25Speaker 2: my house that I might be comfortable with for only
- 39:28Speaker 2: eight weeks, I feel is not fair. It should have
- 39:32Speaker 2: been a conversation he had at the very beginning, where
- 39:36Speaker 2: maybe now listening to this, if you're moving into a sharehouse,
- 39:39Speaker 2: have that conversation with your housemates before you move in,
- 39:42Speaker 2: be like, hey, what if any of us go who's away? Yeah,
- 39:44Speaker 2: that's what if your finances are not your housemates' responsibility.
- 39:50Speaker 2: And yes, it's placement, but like I don't know, three
- 39:53Speaker 2: of our team members recently have done eight weeks stints
- 39:56Speaker 2: in Europe. I'm not saying that that's a key into placement.
- 40:00Speaker 2: There's a lot of privilege, there's a lot of discussion,
- 40:02Speaker 2: But just because your room is open doesn't mean that
- 40:06Speaker 2: someone necessarily comes and lives there. Like you, as you said, Jess,
- 40:09Speaker 2: you've signed a lease, you've moved in on the premise
- 40:12Speaker 2: that you've committed to that for twelve months. If the
- 40:15Speaker 2: circumstances that you can't commit to that anymore, well maybe
- 40:19Speaker 2: you give your housemates the option and be like, hey, cool,
- 40:21Speaker 2: well I'm not going to be able to afford it,
- 40:23Speaker 2: giving you notice now I'm going to move out. You're
- 40:25Speaker 2: going to need to find a new housemate. And that
- 40:26Speaker 2: could be the reality of the situation, because at the
- 40:30Speaker 2: end of the day, I just think, for me, one
- 40:33Speaker 2: thing that I always looked for when I was not
- 40:35Speaker 2: living with my parents anymore was stability. And I didn't
- 40:38Speaker 2: want people coming and going from my home or like
- 40:41Speaker 2: using my stuff or I don't know. I'm not the
- 40:44Speaker 2: type of person that was cool with that. Flip it
- 40:47Speaker 2: over to my little sister. She's so good at making friends,
- 40:50Speaker 2: like it wouldn't matter who was and where it was.
- 40:52Speaker 2: But I think you need to be really aware of
- 40:55Speaker 2: the personalities that you're moving in with because I only
- 40:58Speaker 2: knew that you'd be fine with it, Beck, and I
- 40:59Speaker 2: knew that would be hard. No, Like it was not
- 41:02Speaker 2: a surprise when your opinions came out. I was like, yeah,
- 41:04Speaker 2: this makes sense, right, But.
- 41:06Speaker 6: You feel for a certain environment too, Like what if
- 41:08Speaker 6: the three friends, like you're the kind of friends that
- 41:10Speaker 6: like you get ready together every Friday night, like you
- 41:11Speaker 6: walk around in your unknees because you're all fake tanning
- 41:14Speaker 6: Like there's a level of comfort there that I think
- 41:16Speaker 6: you develop with people that are your friends, that even
- 41:19Speaker 6: if you find a person who's a non freak, who
- 41:21Speaker 6: is perfectly lovely, bringing them into the home is still
- 41:24Speaker 6: going to be disruptive.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Of course, is creepy. I don't think.
- 41:28Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think anyone. I mean, we do need
- 41:29Speaker 5: to finish this episode, but I don't think anyone wants
- 41:33Speaker 5: to say that it's cool or great for home to
- 41:36Speaker 5: be disrupted. I just think in the practical, everyday reality
- 41:39Speaker 5: of living in a share house, there are going to
- 41:40Speaker 5: be times when it's not as good as what it
- 41:43Speaker 5: always is.
- 41:44Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I have empathy not promising another list
- 41:47Speaker 2: that I'm not going to deliver on. I have written
- 41:52Speaker 2: most lists sweety to get them online. So we should
- 41:54Speaker 2: make a list of questions to ask your housemates before
- 41:56Speaker 2: you move in with oh my god, housemate check list.
- 41:58Speaker 2: We're not giving you a date.
- 42:00Speaker 6: Follow us on Instagram and we'll announce it there when
- 42:02Speaker 6: it's random.
- 42:03Speaker 2: We will release it when we're comfortable.
- 42:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:05Speaker 6: That's a great idea though, because we're like, we've done
- 42:07Speaker 6: a lot of these Housemate episodes now and you know.
- 42:09Speaker 2: What, all this is the spiciest housemate content ever. Like
- 42:13Speaker 2: not necessarily this, but like this podcast has gone rogue on.
- 42:16Speaker 2: I feel like one of you heard that we talk
- 42:18Speaker 2: about housemates and you're like, oh, by the way, my
- 42:20Speaker 2: housemate dilemma is so yeah. Anyway, guys, that is all
- 42:24Speaker 2: we have time for today. I hope you have the
- 42:26Speaker 2: best weekend and we'll see you briting early for a
