- 5:11SPEAKER_08: All right, friends.
- 5:12SPEAKER_08: Thanks.
- 5:12SPEAKER_08: Let's take a look at the training schedule.
- 5:14SPEAKER_08: Wine and Dine.
- 5:16SPEAKER_08: Well, friends, wine and dine is next week.
- 5:19SPEAKER_08: The excitement has built.
- 5:21SPEAKER_08: I always think back wine and dine, my first running event at Run Disney.
- 5:27SPEAKER_08: I couldn't control the excitement by this time.
- 5:30SPEAKER_08: And so I hope those friends who are listening who are getting ready to come to Disney for their first ever race.
- 5:38SPEAKER_08: I hope you're as excited as I was back then.
- 5:41SPEAKER_08: I'll tell you what we're excited.
- 5:42SPEAKER_08: We're excited to see you when you get there.
- 5:46SPEAKER_08: Now, we are in training week 17.
- 5:50SPEAKER_08: It's taper time.
- 5:51SPEAKER_08: Your long run this week is four miles because the one after that is the race.
- 6:00SPEAKER_08: We are also closing in now on marathon weekend.
- 6:03SPEAKER_08: We're 12 weeks out.
- 6:05SPEAKER_08: We're in training week 16, and the schedule for this week is a seven-mile walk followed by a 17-mile run walk.
- 6:16SPEAKER_08: Of course, if you're doing one of the challenges.
- 6:19SPEAKER_08: If you're doing the marathon, it's a 17-mile long run this weekend.
- 6:23SPEAKER_08: So that's where we are, and we are not far at all.
- 6:27SPEAKER_08: We are two weeks, in fact, away from starting our training for the princess weekend.
- 6:36SPEAKER_08: Friends, training updates before we continue?
- 6:40SPEAKER_13: Well, I have been gone for two weeks, but I'm back.
- 6:45SPEAKER_08: That's not an update, Jack.
- 6:46SPEAKER_08: Well, well that's not a training update.
- 6:49SPEAKER_13: Well, here we go.
- 6:50SPEAKER_13: Here we go.
- 6:51SPEAKER_08: Okay, all right.
- 6:53SPEAKER_13: I did while I was on vacation, or technically it was a long-awaited honeymoon in Japan.
- 6:58SPEAKER_13: We were there for two weeks.
- 7:00SPEAKER_13: I got to do four runs while I was there.
- 7:03SPEAKER_13: Three of them were in the Disney area, and one of them was in uh the Universal Studios um Japan area.
- 7:10SPEAKER_13: And it was just so much fun.
- 7:12SPEAKER_13: It's very interesting, like exploring different areas um that you wouldn't normally get to do.
- 7:18SPEAKER_13: And I tell you what, if Tokyo Disneyland ever had a race, I don't even care if it's a 5K, 10k, half or full, whatever the distance is, I will go and run there.
- 7:30SPEAKER_13: And I've I've ran in the area before, um, but I got to explore it a little bit more this time around.
- 7:37SPEAKER_13: It went in a different direction.
- 7:39SPEAKER_13: I didn't so I did do two videos.
- 7:41SPEAKER_13: I did one at Tokyo Disneyland and one at uh Universal Studios Osaka that will go up on YouTube in the next couple weeks.
- 7:47SPEAKER_13: I got a few more episodes to put up first.
- 7:49SPEAKER_13: Um, but the Disney portion that I did film, I have run in that section before.
- 7:54SPEAKER_13: The the area that I didn't film was one that I kind of just let myself do my like, you know, on my own.
- 8:01SPEAKER_13: And um, I'm kind of sad that I didn't bring my camera.
- 8:04SPEAKER_13: I got out there, I was like, oh man, it's so beautiful this morning.
- 8:07SPEAKER_13: But it was just so much fun.
- 8:10SPEAKER_13: And I will say, if you're going out there to visit Japan, if you are wanting to run more like in the cities and stuff, there are two great options to really choose from when you're doing Japan.
- 8:23SPEAKER_13: And um, there is a place that is called Running Base in Osaka, and basically what it is, it's right next to the Osaka Castle, and um you go in, it's a little store area where you can rent t-shirts, towels, shorts, even shoes, windbreakers, all that jazz.
- 8:46SPEAKER_13: Um, for four of those items combined, it's like a thousand yen, which is so incredibly affordable.
- 8:53SPEAKER_13: And you can, it's also a place where you can store your stuff.
- 8:56SPEAKER_13: So if you don't bring your running stuff with you, you go to the store, you pick out what you want to wear, shoes and all, go and get a locker, and there's also a shower for you after your run to take a shower and then leave.
- 9:07SPEAKER_13: And it's a great way to try different um, you know, things to use, including shoes and go into beautiful areas.
- 9:15SPEAKER_08: I think the technical term is stuff, I think.
- 9:17SPEAKER_08: Stuff, yeah, there we go.
- 9:18SPEAKER_13: Stuff.
- 9:19SPEAKER_13: But how cool is that?
- 9:20SPEAKER_13: A thousand yen is about six dollars and thirty cents to be able to try all these different things, run in an area that you've never been before, still take a shower, and then be able to still walk around and do other things afterwards.
- 9:30SPEAKER_13: I think that's really cool.
- 9:31SPEAKER_13: And then I'm so sad that I didn't that I didn't get to do it.
- 9:35SPEAKER_13: We didn't have time this trip, but also if you're wanting to do a trip and you want to do running, you can actually rent a running tour guide in Japan.
- 9:44SPEAKER_05: Oh, really?
- 9:45SPEAKER_13: Yeah, you can do private tours, or if you bring friends with you, it's the more in the group, the cheaper it is per person.
- 9:52SPEAKER_13: There's one company, and I can't remember what the name of it was, where you can choose kind of a general location, the distance and the average speed time that you like to run.
- 10:02SPEAKER_13: But there was another one I found where it's like you choose the city you want to run in, and they'll kind of give you the highlights of that city.
- 10:09SPEAKER_13: But um, I thought it was really cool.
- 10:12SPEAKER_13: You can really just Google that kind of stuff, and lots of different things will pop up.
- 10:16SPEAKER_13: But I thought that was really cool and interesting way to tour around the area, but also get you run in.
- 10:22SPEAKER_08: So the run the running tour guide will run with you, I presume.
- 10:27SPEAKER_08: Very interesting.
- 10:28SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:29SPEAKER_13: I can't remember what the company is.
- 10:31SPEAKER_13: If I ever remember, I'll let you guys know.
- 10:33SPEAKER_13: Anyways, that was kind of I I want to go back and do the running tour guide, and I want to do the running base Osaka the next time because Osaka was amazing.
- 10:42SPEAKER_13: It was my first time over there, and Dave and I had an absolute blast, and I think people should go and visit.
- 10:50SPEAKER_10: Cool.
- 10:50SPEAKER_10: I did my last long run last week for wine and dine weekend, so I'm all ready.
- 10:56SPEAKER_10: Oh, actually, I did it Monday because the weekend got a little wacky because the grandkids came over, so I had to help watch four grandkids.
- 11:05SPEAKER_10: It's just not easy.
- 11:06SPEAKER_08: Oh, I bet that broke your heart.
- 11:08SPEAKER_10: Oh, yeah, it did.
- 11:09SPEAKER_10: Well, I I think I I think sometimes at one point I wanted to get out of the house, you know.
- 11:14SPEAKER_10: But uh Well, okay, all right, fair enough.
- 11:17SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you don't don't tell everybody that, John.
- 11:19SPEAKER_08: Just tell us, okay.
- 11:20SPEAKER_08: You don't nobody else needs to know about that.
- 11:23SPEAKER_10: And then Sunday, unfortunately, it it was raining, which we'll find out later on with our spotlight.
- 11:30SPEAKER_10: Uh so I so I did it yesterday.
- 11:32SPEAKER_10: Uh did my run got my fueling in that I'm trying to get do better with so I can learn how to fuel better, which I think is a big positive on my runs.
- 11:43SPEAKER_08: You'd think we'd have it figured out by now, John.
- 11:45SPEAKER_08: We've been doing this long enough, but I'm with you.
- 11:48SPEAKER_08: You know, I have the same problem.
- 11:50SPEAKER_10: Well, I was like this, I was that guy, like, okay, uh it's okay.
- 11:55SPEAKER_10: I I'll if I get hungry, I'll stop at, you know, a store or I'll do this.
- 12:00SPEAKER_10: Now I'm like being a little more prepared because then you're like, do I really want to stop?
- 12:04SPEAKER_10: I'm all sweaty, and then I gotta go in the store and you look like a weirdo because you're like you're sweating and you are horrible looking.
- 12:12SPEAKER_13: So I'll just like not like kind of not often, but I do that.
- 12:18SPEAKER_13: Yeah, I know.
- 12:18SPEAKER_13: I'm just thinking the same thing, too.
- 12:20SPEAKER_10: I'm thinking the same thing.
- 12:21SPEAKER_10: I don't know.
- 12:22SPEAKER_10: I just sometimes think like I give them sweaty money sometimes.
- 12:26SPEAKER_10: Yeah, I've done that.
- 12:27SPEAKER_11: I don't know, and the person was like, really?
- 12:29SPEAKER_10: Yeah, it's like that's the thing.
- 12:31SPEAKER_10: Yeah, so it's like I've been a little doing it better better with that.
- 12:34SPEAKER_10: And I did did did well.
- 12:35SPEAKER_10: Everything was everything's good.
- 12:37SPEAKER_10: Now it is taper week, it's bubble wrap time, like you said, kind of making sure not gonna go out trying to do anything crazy this week and like 17 miles, even though I'm training for marathon weekend.
- 12:48SPEAKER_10: I have 13 next week, so I think that's gonna cover it.
- 12:51SPEAKER_10: So uh that's it.
- 12:52SPEAKER_10: But my other thing I think we need to talk about is we don't know what the weather's gonna be like in Wine and Dine weekend.
- 13:00SPEAKER_10: It could be hot, it could be cold.
- 13:02SPEAKER_10: Just start pre-hydrating.
- 13:04SPEAKER_08: It won't be cold.
- 13:04SPEAKER_10: Just start pre-hydrating yourself now for next week.
- 13:08SPEAKER_10: You don't want to start hydrating the day before the race.
- 13:11SPEAKER_10: It could be hot, it could be hotter.
- 13:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah, um, yeah.
- 13:14SPEAKER_08: Right right now, I mean, we're two weeks out, and I do not live in Orlando.
- 13:18SPEAKER_08: I live in Tampa.
- 13:19SPEAKER_08: Have you been looking at the forecast, Jack?
- 13:21SPEAKER_13: Yeah, I actually have it pulled up right now.
- 13:23SPEAKER_13: Um, so let me see.
- 13:25SPEAKER_13: So technically, Sunday, the low is gonna be 68 degrees with uh 24% chance of rain, and nighttime it will be 85.
- 13:36SPEAKER_13: Or sorry, during the day it's gonna be 85.
- 13:38SPEAKER_13: So you can imagine it's gonna be a hot one.
- 13:40SPEAKER_13: Definitely friends.
- 13:42SPEAKER_13: Yeah.
- 13:43SPEAKER_08: That's seasonal.
- 13:43SPEAKER_08: I also I I know, at least on this part of the state, the humidity is coming down here in the next few days.
- 13:49SPEAKER_08: Uh I don't have much of a training update, but I was forced to take my long run to Monday because of the weather here on Saturday.
- 13:58SPEAKER_08: We had thunderstorms, and the humidity was way up.
- 14:01SPEAKER_08: But when now we did not get hit by the hurricane.
- 14:03SPEAKER_08: The hurricane passed well west of us.
- 14:06SPEAKER_08: But when it did, it drew the winds instead of coming out of the south and the human wind coming off the gulf.
- 14:14SPEAKER_08: Uh the wind started coming out of the north and dried out.
- 14:17SPEAKER_08: So by Monday, it was actually quite nice.
- 14:20SPEAKER_08: Now I had a little, and I'm not going to dwell on it.
- 14:23SPEAKER_08: I had a little training setback, just a little injury type setback.
- 14:28SPEAKER_08: I was supposed to do 20 miles, I couldn't make more than 11, but I'll be fine for wine and dine weekend.
- 14:34SPEAKER_08: I think we're going to get a typical weather weekend there.
- 14:38SPEAKER_08: At least I remember the first year that we ran it, I actually wore long pants in the evening.
- 14:44SPEAKER_08: That was that was it was that chilly.
- 14:47SPEAKER_08: But most of the time, the daytime highs are low eighties, uh nighttime lows or low to mid-sixties.
- 14:56SPEAKER_08: I think we're going to have nice weather.
- 14:58SPEAKER_07: Speaking of the weather, um, what's the weather gonna be like for marathon weekend, Bob?
- 15:02SPEAKER_08: It should be terrific, Greg.
- 15:04SPEAKER_08: It's a chance of rain for the half, but other than that, I think it should be fine.
- 15:09SPEAKER_08: And and no, it's not too late to start training, but it's getting close.
- 15:14SPEAKER_06: Caution runners, change of topic ahead.
- 15:18SPEAKER_08: Hey, marathon weekend medals.
- 15:20SPEAKER_08: Speaking of what's the weather gonna be like on marathon weekend, what are the medals gonna be like on marathon weekend, kids?
- 15:26SPEAKER_08: Oh god.
- 15:28SPEAKER_08: John, you want to.
- 15:31SPEAKER_13: You have a lot to say there, Freddie.
- 15:35SPEAKER_08: Even I thought they were better than that, Jim.
- 15:39SPEAKER_10: Great.
- 15:40SPEAKER_10: Funniest moments, funniest moments.
- 15:43SPEAKER_10: John, why don't you start?
- 15:47SPEAKER_10: How can I say it?
- 15:48SPEAKER_10: Too late, bro.
- 15:49SPEAKER_10: I'm done now.
- 15:50SPEAKER_10: I'm I'm gonna you know what?
- 15:54SPEAKER_10: I mean, this year, I guess it's Donald's anniversary or birthday.
- 15:59SPEAKER_10: Was it an oh for this?
- 16:01SPEAKER_10: It's a half marathon anniversary.
- 16:02SPEAKER_10: So Donald is on every medal somehow, except for the Dopey Medal for some reason.
- 16:09SPEAKER_10: I was I was kind of nervous when they had that preview last week uh with they had those the signs on it, and the marathon medal had Donald holding a medal.
- 16:21SPEAKER_10: And I'm like, are they taking Donald Mickey off the marathon medal and putting Donald on for this weekend?
- 16:26SPEAKER_10: But no, it's it's not.
- 16:29SPEAKER_10: But I think they're nice.
- 16:30SPEAKER_10: I mean, the colors look nice.
- 16:31SPEAKER_10: Uh Donald's all over the place.
- 16:34SPEAKER_10: No, he is.
- 16:36SPEAKER_11: He's kind of chaotic.
- 16:38SPEAKER_10: Yes.
- 16:40SPEAKER_10: And he kind of looks like how we feel sometimes after running the half marathon.
- 16:44SPEAKER_10: A little upset.
- 16:48SPEAKER_10: Like, why did I why did I do this?
- 16:50SPEAKER_11: Right.
- 16:51SPEAKER_11: John, you just mentioned it that he's on all of the medals except for Dopey, and I'll get to the Dopey medal in just a second.
- 16:58SPEAKER_11: But I feel so bad for the people doing go goofy because yet again, I feel like Goofy is kind of pushed to the wayside because Donald's now like second on there when it's Goofy's race.
- 17:13SPEAKER_11: And I'm like, okay, I get it for the other ones, but I I don't know.
- 17:17SPEAKER_11: I feel like goofy.
- 17:21SPEAKER_11: Right.
- 17:22SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 17:23SPEAKER_08: Don't be disrespecting the goof.
- 17:25SPEAKER_11: Right.
- 17:26SPEAKER_11: Um, but speaking of the Dopey medal, I think that that's one of my most favorites that I've seen in a long time for Dopey.
- 17:35SPEAKER_11: Um, and I know people are really excited about it.
- 17:38SPEAKER_11: A lot of people are disappointed that did it last year, then now see the medal this year and aren't doing Dopey.
- 17:44SPEAKER_11: Um but overall, I do think that um there's some differentness to the to the theme of it, which is kind of nice than the traditional like same thing over and over again.
- 17:58SPEAKER_07: Alicia, I I never really thought about that take in terms of the goofy medal because as as someone who will be earning that medal this year, I act that thought never even crossed my mind.
- 18:08SPEAKER_07: Like, I I think, at least in my opinion, I think they did their due diligence with Goofy with the fact that like if you because I think Goofy is a slider on the city.
- 18:16SPEAKER_07: It does, yeah.
- 18:16SPEAKER_11: It slides on any setup.
- 18:18SPEAKER_07: Yeah, so as if it's closed, it's clearly goofy.
- 18:21SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 18:21SPEAKER_07: You have to open it up to reveal the Donald.
- 18:24SPEAKER_07: And I think in terms of a cohesive set, I think they did a really, really nice job with these because we learned um when the artwork got announced all those months ago that you know, because this being the anniversary of the half marathon that Donald was going to infiltrate all of the races in somehow.
- 18:44SPEAKER_07: I know we speculated about you know how would they do that on the medal.
- 18:47SPEAKER_07: So I think the way that they did those touches throughout all of the medals, um, I thought was really cute, especially like you know, a little like Donald in like the 10K and the 5k medals, like the fact that it's even in that retrospect, I thought was really cool.
- 19:03SPEAKER_07: The part that I don't understand though about it is why they didn't then carry that over to the Dopey medal, unless um you know maybe there is some representation in like the lanyard of the medal.
- 19:16SPEAKER_07: Uh so I I didn't look super close at that.
- 19:19SPEAKER_07: The one point that I wanted to bring up because I had this thought process go through my head as I was looking at them for the first time, and then social media confirmed things for me.
- 19:32SPEAKER_07: When I saw the marathon medal, I thought it was really nice looking, but there was a part of me that was like, I feel like I've seen this before.
- 19:42SPEAKER_13: Yes, I was about to talk about it.
- 19:44SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and then on social media, a lot of people then started drawing comparisons of the artwork of Mickey and Minnie from the Marathon Medal from 2025 when they did that whole collegiate theme.
- 19:58SPEAKER_07: And I'm not saying that they're one-to-one, but they're pretty darn close.
- 20:04SPEAKER_07: And I so I'm not discounting, I still think it is a wonderful medal.
- 20:09SPEAKER_07: I'm very, very excited to be earning it this January.
- 20:12SPEAKER_07: I it's gonna look great around all of our necks.
- 20:15SPEAKER_07: I just I found that to be a little, I don't want to say disappointing or or lazy by any means whatsoever, but it just it was a little too on the nose in terms of a comparison of just something that was done two years ago.
- 20:28SPEAKER_13: I'm actually looking at both the this year's medal and the 2025 medal right now.
- 20:34SPEAKER_13: Literally, the only differences of Minnie and Mickey is that instead of Mickey being on the right, he's on the, or I'm sorry, instead of him being on the left, he's on the right, and Minnie's on, you know, the other side.
- 20:45SPEAKER_13: And literally they have the same shoes with the same feet up.
- 20:50SPEAKER_13: So they have the exact same colors.
- 20:54SPEAKER_13: They're on opposite sides that um of each other from the 2027-2025 medals, but literally Mickey has his blue, what do you call those?
- 21:03SPEAKER_13: Sweatband.
- 21:04SPEAKER_13: He has a blue sweatband on his head.
- 21:05SPEAKER_13: Minnie has her okay, her bow is a different color.
- 21:09SPEAKER_13: Yeah, her face and Mickey's face are almost identical.
- 21:14SPEAKER_13: Almost I like it, it's so uncanny how identical these kind of look.
- 21:20SPEAKER_13: I would say it's probably like 10% different, maybe 15% different.
- 21:25SPEAKER_13: But I kind of wish they would have just done something different um with the marathon medals because they look too much samesy samesy.
- 21:34SPEAKER_13: I do love, love the half marathon metal.
- 21:38SPEAKER_13: I think that one looks really, really good.
- 21:40SPEAKER_13: But Alicia, you're gonna hate me for saying this.
- 21:43SPEAKER_13: The Goofy one is probably one of my favorites.
- 21:45SPEAKER_13: I think it's so clever um to hide Donald, but for him to be behind Goofy, because it reiterates Mickey, like Donald's always number one, but you know, Mickey's technically the number one, so he's
- 22:00SPEAKER_11: You pointed that out, that makes sense to me.
- 22:02SPEAKER_11: Like, yeah, it's kind of like a Mike Wozowski in a way, right?
- 22:05SPEAKER_11: Like, yeah, yeah.
- 22:07SPEAKER_07: It is interesting the fact that I feel like the last couple of marathon weekends, the comment has been made by us and others in the community that, like, if you were to look at each metal individually, I think people like the goofy metal the most.
- 22:23SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 22:24SPEAKER_07: Which is really, really odd because you know, especially when we talk about you know marathon weekend in the scope of all the challenges, we always feel like that goofy gets overlooked because it's either I'm doing the marathon or I'm doing dopey.
- 22:37SPEAKER_07: And it's just like if you're doing dopey, you're just getting the goofy medal just for the heck of it, essentially.
- 22:42SPEAKER_07: Well, you've earned it, yeah, exactly.
- 22:45SPEAKER_07: But yeah, so but no, but again, as a cohesive set, though, I think I think it's great.
- 22:50SPEAKER_07: Um, yeah, still don't think it it lives up to the that great cohesive set of the 50th anniversary medals back in 2022.
- 22:57SPEAKER_07: But at the same time, I'm glad to see a good consistent trend on the design team who are coming up with these medals that you know, these last couple of race series for the last couple of years, especially with Marathon Weekend, we've had some cohesion and not just a hodgepodge of this and that.
- 23:16SPEAKER_07: Um, so yeah, I'm excited to earn them.
- 23:18SPEAKER_11: As I'm looking closer at this, if you look really closely in the numbers, you can see in the background of them.
- 23:27SPEAKER_11: It's easier to see in the 48.6 for the dopey, but they have the tree of life, the castle, the Epcot ball, and the Tower of Terror, which I think is really a cool feature.
- 23:38SPEAKER_11: And I think that that's one of the things that is nice about the medals is that I think they're trying to think of the details more since people are are being more nitpicky on them.
- 23:54SPEAKER_11: Um, and so seeing little details like that is kind of fun to see.
- 23:58SPEAKER_11: Yeah.
- 23:58SPEAKER_11: Um, it doesn't come across as clearly on the 26.2, but I do think maybe there's a tree of life on the two, but I for sure can see the castle and the Epcot Ball and the Tower of Terror.
- 24:12SPEAKER_11: Um, so seeing those kind of things is cool.
- 24:15SPEAKER_11: I think the tree of life is behind Donald's hand.
- 24:18SPEAKER_11: I think so, yeah.
- 24:19SPEAKER_07: I know this is not a visual podcast, but the fact that I wish you could see the three girls right now intently staring into their cell phones, trying to look at all these details.
- 24:31SPEAKER_07: It's fantastic.
- 24:32SPEAKER_08: Well, you know what's cool?
- 24:34SPEAKER_08: A week from today we get to see them live.
- 24:37SPEAKER_07: That's very true.
- 24:38SPEAKER_08: So we'll get to figure out just exactly what they look like.
- 24:43SPEAKER_08: And as I'm always fond of saying, they always look great when they hand them to you, no matter no matter what we think a couple weeks before when you finish and they hand them to you, they look fantastic.
- 24:53SPEAKER_06: Caution runners, the topic is about to change right now.
- 24:58SPEAKER_08: Hey, let's catch up on some things going on in the rise and run community.
- 25:07SPEAKER_08: Next week, of course, we're at Disney and we have our group meetup.
- 25:12SPEAKER_08: Our group meetup will be Saturday afternoon at the area formerly known as the food truck area of Disney Springs.
- 25:24SPEAKER_08: 3 p.m.
- 25:25SPEAKER_08: is our official start time.
- 25:27SPEAKER_08: There will be folks there before 3.
- 25:30SPEAKER_08: And we'll be there.
- 25:33SPEAKER_08: We'll be there for the photo at 3.30.
- 25:35SPEAKER_08: Hope you can make it at 3.30 at least, but we'll be there until probably 4.30 or 5 o'clock.
- 25:42SPEAKER_08: Now we've got that meetup.
- 25:44SPEAKER_08: The week after that, Greg, you've got another meetup that you plan to attend.
- 25:50SPEAKER_08: But New York City.
- 25:51SPEAKER_07: Yes, so uh, as we announced last week, um we are going to be doing a mega Run Disney meetup in conjunction with the New York City Marathon.
- 26:03SPEAKER_07: That's going to be taking place on Friday, October 30th from 5:30 to 7 at a bar called Porchlight, which is located about a half a mile down uh the street from the Javit Center where the uh where the New York uh marathon expo takes place.
- 26:21SPEAKER_07: This is open to the entire Run Disney community.
- 26:24SPEAKER_07: Again, we are doing this in conjunction with so many different Run Disney communities.
- 26:31SPEAKER_07: Again, you know, this isn't just specifically a Ryzen Run meetup or a will run for meetup or a one more run meetup or, you know, or a dopey strong meetup.
- 26:40SPEAKER_07: You know, this is just everyone together as one big family, and we're really looking forward to this.
- 26:46SPEAKER_07: Um, our friends AJ and Erica over at the One More Run podcast, they went ahead and created a Google form uh just to RSVP to gauge interest in this, just to make sure that the venue that we have picked um will be suitable for the size of the group.
- 27:01SPEAKER_07: That is pinned to the feature section uh of our Facebook page.
- 27:04SPEAKER_07: So if you can go ahead and fill that out as quickly as possible, we would uh greatly appreciate that.
- 27:10SPEAKER_07: And uh, and in terms of the cost, uh, absolutely free to attend.
- 27:14SPEAKER_07: It is pay as you go in terms of whether or not you want to buy food or drink.
- 27:18SPEAKER_07: That's all on your own.
- 27:19SPEAKER_07: But again, we're just looking forward to getting the entire community together for what is hopefully going to be one epic world major uh race weekend.
- 27:28SPEAKER_08: Look forward to hearing all about it.
- 27:31SPEAKER_08: What else we got going on?
- 27:32SPEAKER_08: Hey! Our friend Christmas card Jenny is about to get active again.
- 27:39SPEAKER_08: For the last two years, Jenny has helped us out by working out Christmas cards lists, sending them out to friends, and we've exchanged Christmas cards amongst the Rise and Run family.
- 27:50SPEAKER_08: Uh, it's fun.
- 27:52SPEAKER_08: People who do it enjoy it.
- 27:53SPEAKER_08: It's of course up to you whether you wish to do that or not, but that'll be on the Facebook page.
- 27:59SPEAKER_08: I need to pin that to the featured section.
- 28:02SPEAKER_08: Haven't done it yet.
- 28:05SPEAKER_08: Next week, of course, we're at Wine and I and the Run Disney season kicks off.
- 28:09SPEAKER_08: It is also the fifth anniversary for the Rise and Run podcast.
- 28:13SPEAKER_08: October 22nd, Expo Day, the Thursday that we release our episode, will be our fifth anniversary.
- 28:20SPEAKER_08: Our friend Brittany Charbonneau will be joining us.
- 28:24SPEAKER_08: We'd like to make it a listener call-in show, and we'd really like you to call in your questions to us by using that hotline, 727-266-2344, and recording your message so we can involve our friends in the podcast.
- 28:44SPEAKER_10: Also, just give you an update on our shirts.
- 28:46SPEAKER_10: The shirts came in really early, uh, earlier than expected, and our friend Judy, she got most of them out.
- 28:54SPEAKER_10: I think they all are out.
- 28:55SPEAKER_10: I think they're all out like in the next day.
- 28:57SPEAKER_10: So uh hopefully you'll see in your mailbox uh a shirt before Wine and Dine weekend.
- 29:03SPEAKER_08: I had lunch with Judy on Wednesday, I can't recall, and I came back, and that evening I had to get into our account on PayPal, and I noticed all these commerce payments going out, and what they were was they were the shipping charges for all the shirts.
- 29:24SPEAKER_08: So, you know, I I saw her at like one o'clock, and by four o'clock I think she had the bulk of the shirts on their way.
- 29:31SPEAKER_08: So hopefully, well, you should get them before wine and dine.
- 29:36SPEAKER_08: Uh so some of you may have them already.
- 29:38SPEAKER_08: I think that's pretty cool.
- 29:39SPEAKER_08: So, yeah, you know what else I was wondering, John?
- 29:41SPEAKER_08: What are you wondering, Bob?
- 29:43SPEAKER_08: What would Alicia do?
- 29:49SPEAKER_11: Yeah, Bob.
- 29:50SPEAKER_11: So with Wine and Dine coming up and the race season starting, I've been doing kind of a lot of reflecting.
- 29:59SPEAKER_11: Um, as we talk about a lot, and you even mentioned it earlier in the podcast, that wine and dine was it is my favorite, but wine and dine um was my first race weekend.
- 30:10SPEAKER_11: Um, and reflecting on over 10 years of doing these races, I wanted to speak to our friends who might be going to their first race weekend, doing their first race, doing their first race of a specific distance.
- 30:25SPEAKER_11: That I just want to remind you that you're there to enjoy it.
- 30:31SPEAKER_11: Please take the time to do so.
- 30:34SPEAKER_11: Um, I know it's really easy to get caught up in things, um, but at least take a selfie.
- 30:41SPEAKER_11: Um, that was one of my biggest regrets when I first went out there was that I wanted more pictures.
- 30:48SPEAKER_11: Um, I have a number of them, but I I wish that I had more.
- 30:52SPEAKER_11: Um, and a big piece that I really wanted was I wanted somebody to ask questions to.
- 30:59SPEAKER_11: Um, we've talked about it before.
- 31:01SPEAKER_11: That's why I started the Facebook group years ago, was that I felt like I didn't have somebody to talk to.
- 31:07SPEAKER_11: And you'll hear um John Pelkey talk about this in our interview with him, but please don't be afraid to ask.
- 31:17SPEAKER_11: So if there's something that you're not sure of, ask the Facebook group or find one of us and ask, because we want to be there to support you in this time that is brand new and exciting um and make it the most fulfilling that it can be.
- 31:35SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 31:36SPEAKER_08: One of, if not the, no, not one of, the thing that I look forward to most is meeting our friends, the friends we've made over the last five years, and the friends that we're going to meet this weekend.
- 31:48SPEAKER_08: So on behalf of me, John, and uh Alicia, because oh Jack, are you going to be in the area?
- 31:59SPEAKER_08: You are, aren't you?
- 32:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm gonna be there cheering.
- 32:02SPEAKER_08: So please, if you see us, please say hello.
- 32:06SPEAKER_08: We we would love to see you.
- 32:08SPEAKER_08: And Alicia's right.
- 32:10SPEAKER_08: The excitement of the weekend is just enjoying it and getting to meet everybody.
- 32:17SPEAKER_08: Because that's what Alicia would do.
- 32:20SPEAKER_08: Caution runners, change of topic ahead.
- 32:24SPEAKER_08: Hey, friends, sometimes you know I use the phrase our next guest needs no introduction.
- 32:31SPEAKER_08: This week that's absolutely true.
- 32:32SPEAKER_08: So go ahead, John.
- 32:33SPEAKER_08: No, wait a minute, wait a minute.
- 32:34SPEAKER_08: I'll give you a little one.
- 32:36SPEAKER_08: If you've been to a Run Disney event, you'll recognize this next voice immediately.
- 32:42SPEAKER_08: If you're new to all this, you're about to meet a new friend.
- 32:46SPEAKER_08: Hey, John Pelke, welcome back to the Rise and Run podcast.
- 32:49SPEAKER_09: Thank you very much.
- 32:50SPEAKER_09: I thought, Bob, you were just saying that my uh my uh mid-Atlantic nasal voice is so recognizable that uh distinct.
- 32:57SPEAKER_09: It'll cut through the haze.
- 32:59SPEAKER_08: It is distinct.
- 33:00SPEAKER_08: I've told you this story before, and it's a hundred percent true.
- 33:05SPEAKER_08: We come back from the COVID break, and things were not right.
- 33:11SPEAKER_08: We didn't get to meet with friends before, we just all go to the corral.
- 33:15SPEAKER_08: And as I recall, the weather was gloomy.
- 33:18SPEAKER_09: Yep.
- 33:18SPEAKER_08: And uh I'm walking back and I'm going, this isn't right.
- 33:22SPEAKER_08: We're not really back, this isn't right.
- 33:24SPEAKER_08: And then I hear you and Carissa, and I go, uh, I'm home.
- 33:30SPEAKER_08: Well, I appreciate that.
- 33:31SPEAKER_08: Always happy to see you.
- 33:33SPEAKER_08: Uh take a little time, talk about the upcoming season, and I want to hear about how things are going for you, uh, getting ready for your next St.
- 33:39SPEAKER_08: Jude's.
- 33:40SPEAKER_08: I'm excited about that.
- 33:41SPEAKER_08: So let's kick it off here.
- 33:43SPEAKER_08: How you feeling now that we're heading into this uh 2026-27 Run Disney season?
- 33:50SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it's just hard to believe it's as uh soon as it is.
- 33:53SPEAKER_09: I mean, I know as we all realize we get older, time moves so much more quickly, but it really does seem just like you know, a few weeks ago that we were at springtime and uh and here we are again.
- 34:05SPEAKER_09: And uh it's there's a lot of anticipation because you know, the adding 5Ks to the uh their first day and a lot of uh a lot of different things for all of us.
- 34:16SPEAKER_09: So I'm I'm excited about it.
- 34:17SPEAKER_09: And I'm not a a person who fears change necessarily.
- 34:21SPEAKER_09: Maybe, maybe in my own life, like you know, learning what day they pick up the trash at my house and all those sort of things that I should do.
- 34:28SPEAKER_09: But uh I I I embrace when we do something different because I think uh and we as we move into, I think uh Carissa and I were still not really great at this.
- 34:36SPEAKER_09: We think it's our 23rd year.
- 34:38SPEAKER_09: Um uh changing it up is uh is kind of fun and it it forces you to uh I'm not gonna say pay more attention, but it does really, really force a little bit more active uh under uh an active listening and an active uh visual uh acuity to what's going on around you.
- 34:59SPEAKER_09: Whereas you can go, you know, on seasons that are all often the same, you can go a little bit on autopilot as long as you're you know dialed in a little bit.
- 35:08SPEAKER_09: So this one's gonna be uh I'm gonna be wide awake despite all of the lack of sleep.
- 35:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and an even earlier start to those 5K's.
- 35:17SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 35:18SPEAKER_09: So we'll all the 5K ends up being my longest day, which is really, really weird because it's usually, you know, you get in, that's a that's a short day, you're tired.
- 35:26SPEAKER_09: You that's the hardest day to get sleep, is that first night.
- 35:30SPEAKER_09: Um, and then but at least the day wraps up really quickly and and you're off.
- 35:35SPEAKER_09: So this is gonna be a long one, but I'm a theater actor, so I don't mind the first act being longer than the second.
- 35:41SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 35:41SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I I know with us arriving at like what, 3 and 3:30?
- 35:46SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 35:46SPEAKER_08: Oh gosh.
- 35:47SPEAKER_08: We'll learn.
- 35:48SPEAKER_08: It'll be interesting and exciting.
- 35:50SPEAKER_08: We'll see.
- 35:52SPEAKER_09: It will.
- 35:53SPEAKER_08: Hey, I know something else that's new since we last talked, and you used to be the Run Disney announcer who really wasn't particularly interested in the fine art of running, but that's changed a little bit.
- 36:07SPEAKER_09: Well, I've been, I mean, I've been shamed into it every single time I've run anything now.
- 36:12SPEAKER_09: So uh I I I've still uh I still consider it as I did when I was uh playing team sports in high school, a punishment.
- 36:20SPEAKER_09: It's a punishment when they make running, yeah.
- 36:22SPEAKER_09: I've just I've just come to terms with the fact that I I need the punishment.
- 36:26SPEAKER_09: Uh yeah, I I was uh I was shamed into running my first 5k.
- 36:30SPEAKER_09: It was like, come on, we'll make it a big part of the entertainment and it'll be funny, and it's only three miles.
- 36:35SPEAKER_09: And and you know, in truth, back then I was doing a couple of miles three times a week.
- 36:39SPEAKER_09: So I mean, well, I know I I can get to the end of this, I just don't know that I want to.
- 36:44SPEAKER_09: But uh, and I did, and it still was the least enjoyable race that I've done.
- 36:48SPEAKER_09: The following year, uh, I was, yeah, I was challenged to do the 10K by Chris Nikich, who I know most of you probably know who Chris is.
- 36:55SPEAKER_09: Um, some of you who don't, he's the first person with Down syndrome to have finished an Iron Man triathlon.
- 37:00SPEAKER_09: And since then, he's finished, you know, 10 of them or some ridiculous amount, but he challenged me uh to do the 10K.
- 37:08SPEAKER_09: And what am I supposed to say?
- 37:09SPEAKER_09: No, Chris, I'm out of shape and lazy.
- 37:12SPEAKER_09: So I'm not gonna do that.
- 37:14SPEAKER_09: And then the the half marathon came about because of the Pelkie Running Club, Grant and uh uh and Natalie, who uh really started the Pelky Running Club, they thought it would be a fun idea to do a weekend up in Memphis, St.
- 37:27SPEAKER_09: Jude being a good, um uh a really good race uh and certainly a fantastic cause.
- 37:34SPEAKER_09: And uh in a moment of weakness, I said yes.
- 37:38SPEAKER_09: And I'm really, really glad I do I did because I I I felt very accomplished when I did it, and uh apparently it didn't dissuade me from saying I would do it again.
- 37:49SPEAKER_09: And in truth, I said that very day that I would do it again.
- 37:53SPEAKER_09: Okay, not right at the end of the race.
- 37:55SPEAKER_09: I immediately at the end of the race thought, holy crap, this is the halfway point for a marathon.
- 38:00SPEAKER_09: How does anyone do that?
- 38:02SPEAKER_09: And uh and then second thought, oh my god, there were people who were in a 5K, a 10K, just did this and are gonna do a marathon tomorrow, and what's wrong with them?
- 38:11SPEAKER_09: And uh, but then I did think after a little while, I was like, you know, I could come back and probably put up a better time.
- 38:17SPEAKER_09: So I don't know, it fired up my competitive juices a little bit.
- 38:20SPEAKER_09: And we had such a great time in Memphis and with the Pelkey Running Club.
- 38:25SPEAKER_09: Uh, so that that that's really what talked me into doing it a second time.
- 38:28SPEAKER_09: And last year we ran, I think, with 27 people, and this year I think we have 49 on the team that'll be running with me.
- 38:34SPEAKER_09: So and we're raising a lot of money for St.
- 38:36SPEAKER_09: Jude's.
- 38:37SPEAKER_08: Oh, I definitely want to I I want to get into that a little deeper in a little bit, but that's great.
- 38:43SPEAKER_08: I mean, I'm happy to talk as things come along.
- 38:45SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you you talk about I think about the dopeies, John.
- 38:50SPEAKER_08: And when you line up at Marathon Day and you realize you're two miles away from the halfway point for the weekend, or exactly what you just said, exactly on Saturday, when you're knocking out that half, and you go, Do I have two of these left in me tomorrow?
- 39:06SPEAKER_08: And the answer is usually yes.
- 39:09SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:10SPEAKER_09: I I listen, I am a firm believer in, you know, uh my journey has said to me, you know what, I I know I could probably could possibly uh commit to and finish a marathon.
- 39:24SPEAKER_09: I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm relatively certain that I could.
- 39:26SPEAKER_08: You could, John, yeah.
- 39:27SPEAKER_09: Um, but I I said this and I and I'm still sticking by the story.
- 39:30SPEAKER_09: At the end of my half last year, I was sore, you know, I was tired, all of the all of those things.
- 39:37SPEAKER_09: Uh it was 38 degrees when we were running, so I was nowhere near as sweaty as I thought I would be, which was really nice, uh, a really nice temperature.
- 39:44SPEAKER_09: But I was able to enjoy the after party.
- 39:46SPEAKER_09: They have a nice uh thing in the minor league baseball stadium there with beer and food and and you know, you can hang out with everybody and I enjoy that.
- 39:53SPEAKER_09: And I thought, uh, you know, I can do this at the end of a of a half.
- 39:56SPEAKER_09: At the end of a full, I'm going into an ice bath and I'm gonna do that for the rest of the day.
- 40:01SPEAKER_09: And I just that's not something that appeals to me at this point.
- 40:04SPEAKER_09: Um, though, if you know, you're gonna get Chris Nikich to challenge me, aren't you?
- 40:08SPEAKER_09: Somebody I will not entertain those challenges anymore.
- 40:14SPEAKER_08: We'll work on it.
- 40:15SPEAKER_08: You know, the other thing though is the training.
- 40:18SPEAKER_08: That I I do them.
- 40:19SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna do another marathon this year.
- 40:21SPEAKER_08: I do not look forward to the training.
- 40:24SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it's uh uh I'm in my Sunday is my 10 mile run.
- 40:30SPEAKER_09: Um, that's where I'm up to for uh we started a little bit earlier.
- 40:34SPEAKER_09: Uh I'm I'm training much differently than I did last year.
- 40:37SPEAKER_09: Um, but I I am my 10 mile run, and uh I'm not uh nervous.
- 40:43SPEAKER_09: Uh I just want to make sure I get enough sleep the night before because uh and we'll talk about how I trained inside all last year and I've been training outside all of this year and how different that's been.
- 40:53SPEAKER_09: Um, but I'm I'm confident I'm gonna go out there and there may be struggles, uh, but I'll I'll get through it.
- 40:59SPEAKER_09: But think about boy, if my long run were like 17, 18, 19 miles.
- 41:04SPEAKER_09: I think by that point I would be uh really resentful that I'd committed to it.
- 41:12SPEAKER_08: It's well, a lot of our friends do it.
- 41:15SPEAKER_08: Oh, I did you know, you're talking to a lot of folks here who have done it, and a lot of our friends do it, and we just recognize you have to do it.
- 41:22SPEAKER_08: If you want to enjoy the race weekend, you got to put in the time.
- 41:25SPEAKER_09: Well, and I always give you credit, Bob, because you're the one who said to me 4th of July, uh, not this past fourth before at the peer run.
- 41:32SPEAKER_09: And I've asked for because I was just coming up on when I was going to start my training, and I said, Do you have any advice?
- 41:37SPEAKER_09: And you just said, do the work, and that simple.
- 41:39SPEAKER_09: And I did, and that's why I was confident I got through it.
- 41:43SPEAKER_09: And I've been doing the work again, though.
- 41:45SPEAKER_09: Again, inside on a treadmill training in Florida and outside training in Florida are two vastly different, vastly different animals.
- 41:54SPEAKER_08: They are indeed, and I'm learning.
- 41:56SPEAKER_08: John, since I mean, we got on the topic, let's let's keep talking about St.
- 41:59SPEAKER_08: Jude.
- 42:00SPEAKER_08: Before we get into more specific questions, though, I would like to point our friends to a terrific episode that you and Grant did with H.
- 42:09SPEAKER_08: An Erica over at One More Run the Podcast, when you talked about that first St.
- 42:14SPEAKER_08: Jude race.
- 42:15SPEAKER_08: That was episode 41 for them.
- 42:17SPEAKER_08: So, friends, if you want to hear all about how the first one came about, and uh really good episode there.
- 42:24SPEAKER_08: One more run, episode 41.
- 42:26SPEAKER_07: Yeah, John.
- 42:26SPEAKER_07: So you referenced it, you know, just a couple of minutes ago about how training for this half is differing, you know, from when you did it last year, which you know, it was just an incredible feat.
- 42:37SPEAKER_07: And watching you in the entire journey was awesome.
- 42:40SPEAKER_07: Uh, but you know, let's talk about the training, the second go-around here.
- 42:43SPEAKER_07: I I saw on Instagram a couple weeks ago um our buddies Jen and Ryan were putting you through your paces uh out on a really long and hot run.
- 42:53SPEAKER_07: But uh if there's gonna be two pacers that I want to be with, those two are definitely to uh get you to the hit all your goals and such.
- 43:00SPEAKER_07: Have you developed any new habits?
- 43:03SPEAKER_07: Have you learned any mental strategies outside of not doing as much on the treadmill?
- 43:08SPEAKER_07: What's new this time around in the training cycle?
- 43:11SPEAKER_09: Yeah, that is the biggest, uh, the biggest for anybody who uh might might not have picked up on that before.
- 43:16SPEAKER_09: Uh I trained exclusively on the treadmill indoors last year.
- 43:20SPEAKER_09: I never did one single outside run uh the entire time.
- 43:24SPEAKER_09: Uh my wife encouraged me to get a new treadmill, and uh I fell in love with it and the training on it, and so I just stayed with that.
- 43:33SPEAKER_09: Uh this time, too, uh to the point that you made, I am training with Jen and Ryan.
- 43:37SPEAKER_09: Um, so I'm getting in at least one run with them a week.
- 43:40SPEAKER_09: A couple of times we've been able to get two in, but uh, we definitely do our long run together and then some of our maintenance runs as well.
- 43:48SPEAKER_09: Um, it has been uh different, uh mainly it's not uh mental strategies.
- 43:54SPEAKER_09: Uh I like running with people, I learned mentally choosing to run with people.
- 44:00SPEAKER_09: To train this time has been much better for me mentally.
- 44:04SPEAKER_09: A little, you know, the treadmill, as much as I loved my new treadmill, that that is a very tedious, as you know, that's a very tedious way to train.
- 44:13SPEAKER_09: Tan be.
- 44:14SPEAKER_09: And running with people is very helpful.
- 44:17SPEAKER_09: What has been a real education for me is running in the Florida heat, on the uneven pavement, with uh, you know, I know it's people are gonna laugh when I say, but there's there's some hilly areas where we run.
- 44:31SPEAKER_09: It's just a very, it's very different physically for me.
- 44:35SPEAKER_09: And I am still novice enough to uh make mistakes in fueling.
- 44:41SPEAKER_09: I'm pretty good with my hydration, but learning how to fuel training outside has been uh has been really the biggest uh the biggest obstacle for me uh because I didn't uh previously running uh when I ran last uh at St.
- 44:57SPEAKER_09: Jude's, uh I had people feeding me.
- 45:00SPEAKER_09: They they really I said, look, I'm I'm just think of me as an idiot and bring me along for this race.
- 45:06SPEAKER_09: And uh shout out to Stephanie who did and all the great folks to Jen who uh and Adrian who were helping me last year.
- 45:11SPEAKER_09: But uh that's really been the thing.
- 45:13SPEAKER_09: It it mentally I've been in a really great headspace because they're great to run with.
- 45:17SPEAKER_09: Um, they've been very, very helpful because I still have a tendency to go out too fast in the beginning.
- 45:23SPEAKER_09: It's just uh I think I trained on my treadmill last year way faster than I needed to.
- 45:29SPEAKER_09: Uh, and I don't think it was necessarily helpful.
- 45:31SPEAKER_09: But boy, learning my body and learning um how to fuel properly it has been uh really the biggest education for me.
- 45:40SPEAKER_13: So with this being your second time around, and this time fully not on the treadmill training, uh I'm curious for this uh second time, do you have any goals specifically for this race?
- 45:54SPEAKER_09: Um whether it be like fun or I wanted, I uh and I don't even know.
- 45:59SPEAKER_09: I I'd have to look back and see what my time was last year because I was uh it the last thing on my mind was my time.
- 46:06SPEAKER_09: I just wanted to finish.
- 46:08SPEAKER_09: Um because again, it was not it, it was not something I ever thought I would do.
- 46:11SPEAKER_09: It was not something I ever thought I would want to do.
- 46:14SPEAKER_09: And it seemed, you know, it seemed so daunting at the time.
- 46:17SPEAKER_09: And I'm like, let's just let's just get through this.
- 46:20SPEAKER_09: And uh so for this year, I'd like to, I'd like to shave about a minute a mile off my uh my time.
- 46:28SPEAKER_09: So I think I came in a little over 15 minute miles last year, maybe, maybe a little more than that.
- 46:33SPEAKER_09: We did have a 20-minute stop to use the restroom.
- 46:36SPEAKER_09: We're not all gonna stop together this time.
- 46:38SPEAKER_09: We found that that was that was a huge, that'll give you a long break.
- 46:42SPEAKER_09: Um, but uh, so I'd like to, you know, I'd like to keep it under 14 minutes a mile.
- 46:47SPEAKER_09: That's kind of what I'm shooting for.
- 46:49SPEAKER_09: Um and again, I always say this to people, you know, who are doing their first race and people are trying to PR.
- 46:55SPEAKER_09: You don't have to prove anything to anyone in this life but yourself.
- 46:58SPEAKER_09: But I would like to prove to myself that I can uh at least get to the finish line uh more quickly.
- 47:04SPEAKER_09: Elements allowing for it.
- 47:06SPEAKER_09: I wouldn't I wouldn't mind that, by the way, if if anybody who controls the elements is listening, I wouldn't mind the 38 degrees again.
- 47:11SPEAKER_09: I found that very, very comfortable starting.
- 47:13SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 47:14SPEAKER_09: It's fantastic.
- 47:16SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 47:17SPEAKER_08: I I can ask this question because as somebody who is older than you, significantly older than you, I think.
- 47:24SPEAKER_09: Oh, just a little bit.
- 47:26SPEAKER_08: Do you think that we mature runners need to take a different approach to our training than our younger counterparts here?
- 47:33SPEAKER_09: Well, I would I I would say, you know, it's it's funny because people have asked me about that, you know, starting my running journey as uh uh late in life as I have.
- 47:43SPEAKER_09: Yeah, you did do that.
- 47:43SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 47:44SPEAKER_09: I I what I have found is um my uh my stamina and all of that is much better than I ever expected it to be.
- 47:53SPEAKER_09: I'm in better shape now than I was last year.
- 47:55SPEAKER_09: But even then going into it, because I had kept up with, if not training, I was getting out there and getting active and and and putting miles in during the week.
- 48:04SPEAKER_09: What I concern myself with the most and what I pay attention most to now is avoiding injury and uh avoiding overstressing parts of my body, just trying to prove that I can do something.
- 48:19SPEAKER_09: Um being a little bit smarter about that.
- 48:22SPEAKER_09: I mean, I, you know, when you're in your 20s and your 30s and even getting into your 40s, you know, you can go out with your buddies and play pick up basketball and elbow each other all day and you know, show up at work the next day.
- 48:34SPEAKER_09: I'm a little longer in tooth now, and I I really what I've really seen from the couple of minor injuries I've had is that rehabilitation of those injuries takes a lot longer than it did when I was a kid.
- 48:47SPEAKER_09: Because I I put I uh uh I pulled a hamstring prior to my race last year, and uh normally that would be, you know, I'm maybe I'm gonna be out for a week, but it was about two and a half weeks before I could really do what I wanted to do.
- 49:02SPEAKER_09: Um, I will say the one thing though, I do have to shout out to everybody who told me go get your shoes fitted.
- 49:07SPEAKER_09: I did find out I was wearing shoes a size and a half too small.
- 49:10SPEAKER_09: So I I have felt better because I've gotten my shoes fitted.
- 49:13SPEAKER_09: If you're gonna be serious about whether you're gonna run races or not, and you're gonna train, you're gonna put you know, six, eight, ten, twelve miles on a week, get your shoes fitted.
- 49:22SPEAKER_09: You will not regret it.
- 49:24SPEAKER_08: Young fellow, you have learned well.
- 49:26SPEAKER_08: Because I mean I was John, I was about to say almost word for word what you did.
- 49:31SPEAKER_08: You're I don't know that you're necessarily much more likely to get hurt, but it's gonna take longer to heal.
- 49:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 49:37SPEAKER_08: I think the only other thing that I and I I was running a little longer than you were before uh is that you have to accept that you're not as fast as you used to be and just deal with it.
- 49:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 49:52SPEAKER_08: Be happy that you're still there.
- 49:54SPEAKER_09: Uh yeah, and that's why I'm hoping to do a little better time in St.
- 49:57SPEAKER_09: Jude's really isn't about being any faster.
- 50:00SPEAKER_09: It's just being smarter about my race and smart, smarter about how I've gone about my training.
- 50:06SPEAKER_09: Um, it's been obviously I did it again, did it all on my own last year, following Jeff uh Galloway, Rest in Peace uh uh training regimen, but now out there with people who are veterans, who are pacers, who are really able to help educate me and in what I'm doing and keep me doing it um safely.
- 50:25SPEAKER_09: Uh yeah, it's uh the the rehabbing of injuries of any sort when you get into your I'm 62, when you get to be this age, it takes a lot longer, a lot longer than you think it will.
- 50:36SPEAKER_11: Johnny, you talked about how you have this really good support system and that they were there for the first race.
- 50:41SPEAKER_11: But what is it like flipping the script from going from the microphone being that person that motivates us to the one needing that motivation?
- 50:49SPEAKER_11: And is there like one particular phrase or a thing that you can think of that is that motivation for you?
- 50:56SPEAKER_09: I I you know, I just think my motivation, and uh, I guess I could go out and run a race by myself, but I think my motivation is just running with people, just keeps me, you know.
- 51:08SPEAKER_09: I um Carissa said something very, very nice about me when uh I first said I was gonna do this.
- 51:13SPEAKER_09: Uh and I was I said, you know, I don't know that I can go 13 miles.
- 51:17SPEAKER_09: I really, I've never thought of that.
- 51:19SPEAKER_09: And I think up when I signed up for the race, I don't think I'd ever gone more than six.
- 51:23SPEAKER_09: I think I did 6.2.
- 51:24SPEAKER_09: I'd done my 10K.
- 51:25SPEAKER_09: That was the furthest I'd ever gone.
- 51:26SPEAKER_09: And the thought of doing twice that when I finished my 10K was like, what are you kidding me?
- 51:31SPEAKER_09: Um so uh I I I think that that for me is the motivation.
- 51:37SPEAKER_09: It's funny about the external motivation as a um as a race announcer.
- 51:42SPEAKER_09: I found myself paying little or no attention to what was being said because I was so focused on this is the first time, how is my race belt fitting?
- 51:51SPEAKER_09: Do I have should I should I put uh uh hydration multiplier in my water now?
- 51:57SPEAKER_09: Do it I had so much of that on my mind.
- 52:00SPEAKER_09: I think as I I think this year I'm gonna be a lot more dialed into what's happening around me.
- 52:05SPEAKER_09: I was a little bit a little, even though I had all those folks, but everyone was kind of focused on on that for me.
- 52:11SPEAKER_09: But uh yeah, running with people, running with people that you you like or at least tolerate.
- 52:16SPEAKER_08: Uh did you pay attention to the race announcer when he told you not to cross the start line with your mylar on?
- 52:23SPEAKER_09: I I I I was actually telling people around me who had the mylar.
- 52:26SPEAKER_09: I go, you know, you probably don't want to put that up.
- 52:28SPEAKER_09: This by the way, it's the first time I ever had a mylar blanket on myself ever.
- 52:32SPEAKER_09: Really?
- 52:33SPEAKER_09: I had never done it before.
- 52:34SPEAKER_09: I'd fallen into the piles of them at Disney, and but I never wrapped one up around me for uh uh heating uh purposes, and boy, really really did work well.
- 52:45SPEAKER_09: They do work well.
- 52:46SPEAKER_13: Yeah.
- 52:47SPEAKER_13: Wait, so when you said you fell into the pile of mylar, are you saying you did open arms and let yourself go with nobody catching you?
- 52:55SPEAKER_13: And holding up.
- 52:55SPEAKER_13: Yeah, there's a video somewhere.
- 52:57SPEAKER_09: There's a video somewhere on social media of Carissa and I uh because they gathered up all the mylar.
- 53:03SPEAKER_09: And it's when we were back out on um Epcot Resorts Boulevard or where they used to have the starts for the race.
- 53:10SPEAKER_09: So you can imagine just all piled up around the side, and we're like, well, we gotta go like fall into that.
- 53:14SPEAKER_09: So we snow angeled our way into that, and somewhere there's video of it, but I but I never actually wrapped the thing around me to figure out uh to see how it would work.
- 53:24SPEAKER_09: And uh I can let me be the one billionth person to say, yeah, it really works.
- 53:29SPEAKER_09: If you're cold, put a put a my alert blanket on.
- 53:31SPEAKER_08: You know, come to think about it, I don't think I've ever done it before a race.
- 53:35SPEAKER_08: I couldn't tell you what race I first did it at, but I think that's the first time I ever did it.
- 53:39SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I'd never seen it prior to you know, races, I'd never seen it at any other sporting event, anything like it.
- 53:46SPEAKER_09: And I remember the first couple of times I saw it, I'm like, you know, but are they going as baked potato?
- 53:50SPEAKER_09: I don't I don't quite understand.
- 53:52SPEAKER_09: And uh somebody's like, no, no, no, it's it really works well.
- 53:55SPEAKER_09: And I'm like, how can it work?
- 53:56SPEAKER_09: It's like putting Reynolds wrap around you.
- 53:58SPEAKER_09: I don't get it, but there you go.
- 54:00SPEAKER_09: That's why I was uh at best a C plus science uh student right there, that I don't understand how that works.
- 54:07SPEAKER_10: Okay, so you talked about before training in the Florida heat now.
- 54:11SPEAKER_10: So how are you preparing preparing for race day variables like the heat, the cold, or the hills, and possibly the emotional hit that you're gonna get running through the St.
- 54:22SPEAKER_10: Jude campus?
- 54:23SPEAKER_09: Well, uh, I think uh as far as the cold, I got lucky because last year was cold.
- 54:28SPEAKER_09: And so I have I have uh my cold weather gear.
- 54:31SPEAKER_09: I'm really comfortable with it.
- 54:33SPEAKER_09: Uh I have people helped me, I chose smartly.
- 54:36SPEAKER_09: Um, and uh so prepared for that.
- 54:39SPEAKER_09: As far as the heat, I'm I'm going to, I cannot tell the future, but I'm going to guess it's not going to be as hot as my run uh on this Sunday for of 10 miles.
- 54:49SPEAKER_09: So uh I I I'll I'll be I'll be fine.
- 54:51SPEAKER_09: I'll be fine with uh whatever the heat is.
- 54:54SPEAKER_09: But uh it uh and hopefully the uh Memphis has always been fairly decent weather from what everyone has told me.
- 55:05SPEAKER_09: Maybe cold, but it's usually clear and everything.
- 55:07SPEAKER_09: I can I'm more concerned with precipitation than I am anything else.
- 55:12SPEAKER_09: Um but uh but I have some I have some uh some rain gear as well.
- 55:16SPEAKER_09: Hopefully it won't come to that.
- 55:18SPEAKER_09: But uh the as the emotional part of St.
- 55:20SPEAKER_09: Jude, one of the uh the only negatives left in really a negative, is because it was so cold, we didn't have a lot of the uh uh of the kids out there.
- 55:30SPEAKER_09: We had a few and it was incredibly inspirational.
- 55:33SPEAKER_09: And then uh, and I I'll get overly emotional if I think about too much of this, you know, parents of children who had passed and had been out there before and all of that sort of thing.
- 55:42SPEAKER_09: Um, but that's just another one of those things I think when you see that, uh, and that comes, I think, at about the 10 mile mark, about nine, 10 miles.
- 55:52SPEAKER_09: It's a uh it it really does steal you to the fact that you know what, what you're doing is a choice that uh you could choose to stop at any point in time.
- 56:03SPEAKER_09: What those folks are going through is real.
- 56:06SPEAKER_09: So just shut up and get to the end of the race like you're supposed to.
- 56:10SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 56:11SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I get it.
- 56:12SPEAKER_07: You know, John, in past episodes uh, you know, that you've been on with us, and you know, obviously granted as well.
- 56:18SPEAKER_07: And again, you know, Bob highlighted the great episodes over at One More Run as well, too.
- 56:22SPEAKER_07: But but just real briefly, you know, we all know the story of how the Pelkie Running Club got established, and you know, the the joke that has blossomed into this beautiful subset community uh of the Run Disney family.
- 56:37SPEAKER_07: But just again, briefly, talk about what the support of the Pelkie Running Club has done, not only for your running journey, but for you personally.
- 56:47SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it's been it's been pretty profound.
- 56:50SPEAKER_09: Um, I am, you know, and uh my friend Riley Claremont, the same thing, uh, extroverted, introvert.
- 56:58SPEAKER_09: Uh, and I think a lot of performers are people like that.
- 57:00SPEAKER_09: So I uh, you know, when I was saying earlier about love, like running with people, and I I never thought that would be the case because I'd always been sort of a I'm a bit of a solitary person.
- 57:12SPEAKER_09: Uh, and my wife will attest to that fact.
- 57:14SPEAKER_09: She's the people person in the family.
- 57:16SPEAKER_09: Um, so uh having this group of people that for some reason were drawn to you know, whatever my vibe was, and thought it would be fun to get involved with people with and a lot of us with the same sensibility.
- 57:31SPEAKER_09: We have some really, really fast people are out doing PRs, but I think for most people, it's an inclusive group that wants to have fun, support one another, uh, help one another as much as possible.
- 57:40SPEAKER_09: And we built some great friendships uh between people.
- 57:43SPEAKER_09: So uh I think it's really opened me up uh to be a little bit more um a little bit less insular uh as a person and uh widened my uh horizons a little bit.
- 57:58SPEAKER_09: And then the uh the other thing that's really motivating about it is on almost any given day, I'll get up in the morning and go to uh my social media feed, and there'll be Pelke Running Club people in Berlin uh running or you know, traveling over there to do that, and they've got a hat or they've got you know a shirt or whatever and they're repping in some way, uh, or it's just their local race or you know, a turkey trot or a mud race or a color race, all these great uh great events that are going on weekly all over the world.
- 58:30SPEAKER_09: And uh there's usually somebody uh who's uh connected with the club who's taking part in those.
- 58:36SPEAKER_09: And that's a pretty cool thing for you know an only child who could who my wife swears I could sit in a house and read for eight months and never see a human being, and I'd be okay.
- 58:46SPEAKER_09: It's probably not true anymore, uh though I do like to read.
- 58:50SPEAKER_09: Uh, but uh it's yeah, it's been very it's been very profound.
- 58:53SPEAKER_09: Like I said, it's such a great group of people.
- 58:55SPEAKER_09: The fact that we've almost doubled the numbers of people who are gonna join us this year from last year, and uh yeah, Tracy Wu is gonna be running with us uh up.
- 59:04SPEAKER_09: Yeah, so it's just yeah, it's been it's been really really nice.
- 59:08SPEAKER_09: And I'd always been a little bit uncomfortable with praise after shows, and you know, people, it's like it's my job, it's what I do, thank you.
- 59:16SPEAKER_09: But uh, and and now I've I'm a lot more open for uh just uh I guess more honest emotional connection with uh with folks that maybe I didn't I I didn't know any of these people going into this, and now many of them are very close friends of mine, so uh, and incredibly supportive.
- 59:34SPEAKER_09: And I think anybody who wants to get involved in distance running, find a support system.
- 59:40SPEAKER_09: What whatever that is, join a run club in your neighborhood, what whatever, because you, you know, and humble yourself that you I think we I I talked about this on a couple different podcasts, humble yourselves and say you don't know anything because you may think you know everything you don't, and if you if you're running with other veteran people, you're gonna learn a lot.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_12: Do you feel like um having the community behind you, whether it be the Pelkie Running Club, Rise and Run community, or just as many people as have joined in the Run Disney community and know you as an announcer, do you feel like that has changed you in any way?
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_12: Or do you feel like that has shaped how you view running?
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_09: Well, yeah, I think again, I think profoundly.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_09: I think uh certainly how I view running.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_09: I joked earlier that, you know, I played team sports as a kid, and we all of us who do, you know, you had to run laps.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_09: That was always like a punishment for you, you know.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_09: Oh, late for practice, run a lap.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_09: Oh, missed a block, run a lap, uh, all that sort of thing.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_09: Uh, I do uh while I still still swear I think people are lying to me about the runners high, uh, I do understand a great deal now about um, you know, I still try to come up with uh excuses why I can't run, and then I work through that.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_09: I still have to come up with the, oh, you know, today I might not be, I will push through that and actually run now.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_09: And just the accomplishment of getting through a long run or a workout.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_09: And, you know, in in the past it would have been a situation of uh, oh gosh, I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna take the rest of the day off.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_09: But now I I've been able to institute it as a uh weekly part of my regular schedule.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_09: Now, if I do my 10-mile run, I'm gonna probably sit on the couch and watch football for the rest of the day.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_09: But if I had to do things, I could do those things.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_09: And I think uh I don't think I would have done any of it without, I know I wouldn't have done any of it if I'd never been involved with the Run Disney community, and then just communities like yours, Rise and Run, uh, and uh certainly the Palkie Running Club.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_09: Uh it's just uh yeah, any any positive reinforcement I can get about running because I had so much negative reinforcement through my youth.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_08: John, I can promise you, and I think you believe this.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_08: Almost all of us, no, not almost all of us, all of us go through those days.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_08: I don't want to go out.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_08: I don't want to run.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_08: There are people out there who are going, but you know, Pelkey's running today, and I'm running with him, so I'm gonna go out and do it.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I I tell our friends all the time, you never know who you're motivating.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_08: You never know.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_08: You never know if that person standing at the window in front of his house watching you run by every day goes, you know, if that guy can do it, I think I could do it.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I I think that's one of the one of the great things about all the stories we get to hear on a run Disney weekend, too, because you don't know somebody's story, you know, some of them are just gut-wrenching stories, and then some of them are a little more uh, you know, a little more happy and upbeat, but you don't know that somebody who's listening to that, and you know, hey, you know, well, I met this person because we get a lot of these.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_09: I met this person three years ago here and now we keep in touch, we meet.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_09: That may motivate somebody who's looking for a community.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_09: Our good friend DW, who we all know from the Run Disney community, talked about finding finding your community.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_09: And uh it's it's uh unlike the golfing community that I've run into while while attempting to drive myself insane on a golf course, not always the most supportive.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_09: It's been such a great and supportive group of people, uh really through all the years that I've done this.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_09: That uh it's it's it's been a it's been a big, big, big uh it's been the largest part of my life, probably for the last 15 years.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_07: This has all been incredible to hear.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_07: We are so excited for you to go out, crush your goals, you know, the second change, Jude's half marathon.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_07: Again, I I remember that video of just the emotion of you crossing that finish line, and I that resonates so much with the Run Disney community, and you know, it provides that motivation, just like you know, you and Bob were just talking about.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_07: So I we truly, truly do hope that you will be able to build upon that experience this year, and we will be cheering you on from near and far.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_07: So best of luck.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_07: But let's transition now to the other big show that is starting next week, and that is the start of a new Run Disney race season.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_07: And you know, you've been at this for a while, but you know, what stands out to you um about this upcoming season, maybe outside of the 5k and you standing up on stage for probably the combined length of your favorite show, 1776 and Hamilton combined, um, you know, on the microphone.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_07: But but you know, what are you looking forward to and and what is most anticipated for you?
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_09: Well, I just think, you know, I I we uh we talked about this, you know, uh, I think off air as as well as maybe a little bit on air, is that uh I I'm looking there are gonna be some changes.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_09: There are gonna be some changes.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_09: There's some different creative people involved.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_09: We have uh obviously uh these adding on these new races.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_09: And uh for anyone out there listening, I don't know any more than you do about how that's all going to work.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_09: But I'm I'm excited about trying some different things.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_09: And uh, you know, one of the and I go online and read people's criticism because I think it's important to know what people are talking about, even though you know social media is generally accessible.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_09: Uh it's uh but you people talk about, you know, well, I you know, I appreciate that uh the race starts in the same place all the time, but that you know it there feels like a sameness to it, and we're running the same places and we're going, you know, largely and you know, a lot of that obviously has to just do with logistically.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_09: Um you have to make some uh sacrifices to get races off on time uh and to and to find the the space necessary.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_09: But uh I'm I'm just excited about that there there are gonna be some changes and it may uh it may somewhat subtly change what I'm doing.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_09: Um and I I I really don't know.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_09: I don't know how sending off all those waves is gonna happen.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_09: I don't know uh what if we're if we are going to be uh you know if we do an entertainment piece for one group and Do again for another group.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_09: I don't know any of that.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_09: And I'm really looking forward to finding out because I think it it again, it'll just keep you, it will keep you fresh.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_09: Um, and uh it's not that not that it's grown stale, but uh it it there's there was a level of sameness to it for for us and that in some ways can be comfortable, but I think shaking it up a little bit will be uh might be beneficial for all of us involved.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_09: So I'm kind of I'm kind of psyched about it all, except for uh getting no sleep before that 5K day being much longer now, and that's probably gonna be, you know, my my my day after the 5K will probably be less enjoyable than it generally tends to be.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_10: Talking about the long day, what's the biggest challenge you have keeping the energy alive for announcing all those hours?
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_09: You know, I was gonna say this now, and I'm gonna have a much longer day announcing.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_09: It's not as difficult as as you would think.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_09: Um the biggest challenge is you know, we get there very, very early and rehearse, and then there's usually like a long break before we actually start what we're doing.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_09: And the biggest challenge is not for me, is not allowing my energy level to just drop so much during that.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_09: Some people like to take like a power nap or something there, but I kind of have to be up and around to hit the stage.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_09: Um managing sleep is always an issue, but I think again, you you look out at the group of people and and uh, you know, I'm gonna run my half marathon, but I'm not gonna spend 18 weeks on a costume to do it.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_09: I'm not gonna go jump through all those hoops.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_09: And you look at all those people that are run Disney crowd that have done that, and and it's um it's inspiring and it and it motivates you.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_09: And, you know, I am enough of a professional to know the first person who leaves the star line and the last person who leaves the star line deserves the same me or doesn't deserve me if you know.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_09: No, it's no.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_08: We look forward to it.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_12: You've talked a little bit about what are the tough parts of being the voice of the Run Disney events, but what do you love most about it?
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_09: It's uh it's you know, it's like having four family reunions a year.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_09: You get to see a lot of, you know, throughout, uh you know, obviously you don't see everybody every race, but every season you usually see a lot of the same people, whether they're doing all the races when they're doing uh uh one, two, whatever.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_09: Um, and that's you know, that's again, that's the best part about it.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_09: I it's a job, it can be difficult.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_09: I'm generally fairly worn out at the end of a weekend.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_09: But in the middle of it, I I said this.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_09: Uh there's a great quote um Jim Valvano made at uh his famous speech, Start the V Foundation, about, you know, every day you should laugh, every day you should cry, you should spend some time in thought.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_09: You should, and I always say, uh, Run Disney Day cover it runs the gamut.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_09: We we laugh, we cry, uh, we we contemplate things.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_09: And uh and and oh, by the way, we're out there, you know, maybe not myself during a Run Disney race, but we're out there physically challenging ourselves at the same time.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_09: I mean, it really is, you know, you are you're living a full life for that day, emotionally and physically.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_11: We have the wine dine races coming up here, but looking at the season as a whole, what are you looking forward to most as an announcer and as a runner?
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_09: As a runner, I I I will have to say I am looking forward to uh standing on stage marathon weekend and uh and then saying, all right, I did it again.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_09: And here's what I learned.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_09: Here's what I know.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_09: Still haven't hit the runners high, but here's what's important to know, and you know, how you how I think you can help yourself get to the finish line.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_09: Uh and as far as the season is, I there are so many unknowns coming into this that I'm just kind of excited to see how it goes.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_09: And uh, and again, I I I I I there will probably be bumpy moments and stuff, but we get more people will be able to run the 5K.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_09: And I think, you know, uh a lot of those people will be first-time people, and hopefully they find the experience.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_09: Uh we can make the experience fun enough for them uh that uh that they'll come back again.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_09: And and the new people won't be going, well, this isn't how it was the last time.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_09: So they'll they'll probably be a little bit more agreeable if things do get a little rocky.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_10: That's right.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_10: They won't know any better.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_09: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_10: Exactly.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_10: Okay, so like we said, it's the start of the Run Disney season.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_10: Uh, what advice would you give someone attending their very first Run Disney race this season?
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_09: Surrender to it.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_09: You you're you're not gonna have a lot of control.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_09: You're you're gonna you know, you you it it the logistics right, I always said this.
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_09: The logistics, we know what you did to get here.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_09: You know, we knew you had you got up too early.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_09: Maybe you flew in last night, you had travel issues.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_09: When you get there, just just give into uh in into what's happening.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_09: You you can't you can't control so many things on that weekend.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_09: All you can really get control is your is your attitude.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_09: And uh just keep this positive attitude.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_09: You know, as Carissa always says, you get to do this.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_09: And you work to sign up for this in most cases.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_09: I mean, you put you put forth some effort.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_09: Um, so uh just uh yeah, just just realize that what you you've done your work.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_09: Now just go out and enjoy, enjoy the race, enjoy the people, enjoy the entertainment, enjoy the experience.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_12: From the announcers booth, and this kind of goes into what you just said, but what do you notice most about the runners who look the happiest on the course, even whenever they are struggling?
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_09: I I I think it's it's that that's it that's a really, really interesting question.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_09: Um you after all these years, you just sort of pick up on um I think what I what I just said was was people who have just, you know, they've let go of the the idea that, oh my gosh, I have to get I I have to get to the finish line in this amount of time, or you know, oh my gosh, the that person, I I almost ran into that person in front of me because they, you know, they didn't put their hand up when they slowed down.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_09: All of those things.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_09: I I I think you can you can just sense the people who are, you know, let's just keep moving forward.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_09: We're all in this together.
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_09: If we, you know, if we dwell on anything negative, then there it really that will have no positive effect on your day's experience.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_09: So, you know, I I think it's just people who are are willing to give in to the fact that, you know what, we have thousands of people here.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_09: We're running X amount of miles.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_09: You know, if I if I wanted to do this alone, you could drop me in the middle of Iowa and I could run in a straight line for 26.2 miles.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it's gonna get crowded.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_09: There are gonna be they're gonna be moments that are less comfortable than your, you know, your local civic 5K.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_09: Um but you know, you're you're at Disney World.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_09: You're gonna you're gonna come across characters that mean something to you.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_09: You're gonna see things that you didn't otherwise see.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_09: And hopefully, if you give into it and you're just present, you're gonna uh you're gonna hear some stories from people that are gonna motivate you and make you happy, make you thoughtful, all those sort of things.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_09: So I think you can just you just pick up on the people who are there to be completely um a part of the entire experience and and people there, and and this is this will sound like a criticism of people, and it really isn't, but it we people who uh have a very, very narrow goal that they're searching for.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_09: And if anything happens outside of that goal, then it it seems like failure.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_09: And I just try to tell everyone, and the way I look at it is no one who showed up this morning is failing at anything.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_08: You know, we God bless them.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_08: We used to talk with Jeff about this all the time the unique quality of the Disney race, and that is it.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_08: I we have all done other races, we enjoy them, they have a lot to offer, but none of them capture that essence, that attitude of we're all in this together, we're here for fun.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_08: A big part of that, my friend, is you and the rest of your announcing crew.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_08: You absolutely positively add to that environment.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_09: Yeah, we're all in it together.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_09: So you know, and uh I've said it, Riley said it, Chris said it.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_09: It takes no more effort to come here and be positive and try to have a good time than it does to come here and you can look around.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_09: Uh, I'll clean up the phrase I always like to say about you can pick gnat crap out of pepper anytime you want, but you know, that's really not uh that's not going to make for an enjoyable experience.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_09: Um so just give into it.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_09: You're a Disney World.
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_09: And I you the the other unique thing you need to talk about, Bob.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_09: The unique thing about the Disney thing is no other race do you go to.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_09: Now, maybe you go to do the New York Marathon because you're a fan of New York, but in no race do you just like uh the people who come generally come because they have some level of fondness for Disney.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_08: It's a magical thing.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_08: All right, John, I've enjoyed it.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_08: I'd like to, I think we have time here, wrap up with a couple of lightning round questions if you're ready.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_10: I am absolutely favorite run Disney costume you've eat you've either seen or worn while announcing?
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_09: Oh god, these are asked the costume questions and that's so difficult.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_09: Disney running.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_09: I what I you know what the costumes that I wear when I remember are the ones that are easy to put on.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_09: So anytime I wear, I've said this before, anytime I'm wearing a onesie, I've got to have the announcer because I can get into it last.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_09: Uh, because sometimes the costumes can be hot.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_09: So uh I'm just gonna go with anytime I'm I've worn a onesie, those were my favorite costumes.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_09: Uh I the one that sticks out to me um when we really started to see the costuming pick up, uh which we have over the years.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_09: It's funny, and it's the old frog in the frying pan uh where you know we see a few costumes, and you know, back when I started, it was mainly princess, and people were in tutus, and then it got more and more elaborate.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_09: The first time I saw someone running a slinky dog uh and they were connected together, I I I vividly remember that.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_08: Which they're not allowed to do anymore.
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_09: I know, I know.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_09: So I'll probably get in trouble for saying it, but I'm I'm just I'm gonna say it.
- 1:16:56SPEAKER_09: The first I thought that's really, really, that's really, really well done.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_09: And some of the mashups, I've said this too, and I'm so bad at it.
- 1:17:04SPEAKER_09: But some of the mashups, uh, that and half the time I don't get it when I'm told what they are.
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_09: Uh, there are some really, really creative people out there.
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_09: Really creative people.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_09: But kudos to those first people because they did Slinky Dog and Slink and the costumes were perfect.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_09: They look great.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_09: Uh, I it I would think that'd be a little annoying.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_09: I don't know if they stayed connected throughout, but they certainly did across the start and the finish line.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_09: I thought that was a fun one.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_07: John, music plays an important role in both of our lives.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_07: So, what is the one song that really motivates you during training?
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_09: Uh uh there's a song by a uh group called Fort Minor that's remember the name.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_09: Uh that uh is I and I actually saw it on an episode of um uh hard knocks, and I think it was with the Houston Texans.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_09: And uh and I don't I I I will not do it uh justice, but it's like it's five percent something, 20% pain.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_09: It's there's this whole thing about okay.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_09: Yep, yeah, and uh now that I'm running with people, that's the one thing that has changed is that normally it was me listening to music the whole time or watching something, but now that I'm running with Jen and Ryan, you know, I'm having conversations as I'm running, so I haven't really had my race.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_09: I I have to put together because I will put one together for Memphis just in case there's any period of time where it's like, let's just turn you know turn the music on.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_09: But that Fort Minor Remember the Name song really gets me going.
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_09: And there's a Machine Gun Kelly song that's called Bad Mother, and you can figure out the rest that really, really gets me fired up.
- 1:18:39SPEAKER_09: I need like you know, A C D C loud, just pounding.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I that that's what that's what I need going on in my just to take my mind off the fact that one foot in front of the other, keep going, keep going.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_13: If you could announce any non-run Disney race in the world, which one would it be and why?
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_09: Uh it's it's it's one of two.
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_09: Um first of all, London's my favorite city on earth, and I was lucky enough to have been there uh recently.
- 1:19:05SPEAKER_09: So that would be really, really cool.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_09: Uh, though I would be probably way too um motivated to do it in a scouse liver puddle accent, which I don't think anyone would like if I was doing it the three, four, one go.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_09: Um so uh they probably wouldn't care for me, but uh I'm I'm fascinated with, and I've said this on every any time I've ever been interviewed, I'm fascinated with the logistics of the New York City marathon.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_09: Just what the hoops they have to jump through burrow to borrow.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_09: Uh just and I've I've sat on planes with people who are producers for it and talked to them about it, but uh I think and I'm a big New York guy to love New York, so I think that one would be really cool.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_09: So either New York or London.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_09: That's why I need to get my uh you know, world majors in as an announcer.
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_09: I would like to do that.
- 1:19:56SPEAKER_09: No interest in running those marathons, but I would love to announce them.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_08: So I think, yeah.
- 1:20:01SPEAKER_08: That would be fantastic.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_09: John that's Carissa.
- 1:20:05SPEAKER_09: She gets to do all that fun.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_08: I know she does.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_08: We we see her.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_08: She's the talent.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_08: That's fair.
- 1:20:11SPEAKER_08: Well, you're a great team.
- 1:20:13SPEAKER_08: The two of you really are.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_08: Uh, thank you so much for uh spending some time with us.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_09: It's always good to see you guys, and it's a great way to, you know, again, I'm sitting here uh when I was uh setting everything up today, I'm like, oh my gosh, I check into the hotel in like 10 days.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_09: And uh I mean it's good trying to get all the stuff.
- 1:20:33SPEAKER_09: The uh for the race announcers uh like myself, unlike Carissa who's out working every weekend, uh, but uh those of us who aren't, it's like getting everything done that you have to get done before a race weekend because once we hit the ground running for a run Disney race weekend, then it really rolls through for me because it's like event after event until after really princess.
- 1:20:55SPEAKER_09: So I've got uh I have a long list of things I have to do.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_09: So my wife uh uh will be happy with me around the house and stuff.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_08: I don't know if you can share this with her with us or not.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_08: Will we see Jody on the course again this year?

- 1:36:25SPEAKER_08: You can ask us anything.
- 1:36:27SPEAKER_08: Uh, with Britney being here, you may want to ask questions about training or racing, or you may want to ask us questions about this show and the last five years, what we thought of it.
- 1:36:39SPEAKER_08: And if we think we're going to do five more years.
- 1:36:41SPEAKER_08: That's a good question.
- 1:36:44SPEAKER_08: And now please stand clear of the door.
- 1:36:50SPEAKER_08: It's time for a race report.
- 1:36:58SPEAKER_08: The race report is sponsored by our friend Tom Stokes, Stoked Metabolic Training, Stokes.fit slash rise and run coaching.
- 1:37:06SPEAKER_08: For more information, Tom's about to wrap up the four-week challenge that he had coming into the wine and dine weekend.
- 1:37:15SPEAKER_08: I've enjoyed it again.
- 1:37:17SPEAKER_08: I had just a little hiccup here.
- 1:37:18SPEAKER_08: I've missed the last couple of days, but I'll be back at it tomorrow.
- 1:37:22SPEAKER_08: It's been very successful for me.
- 1:37:24SPEAKER_08: Uh I've I've lost weight, but friends, you won't see it because I gain and lose so much you won't notice.
- 1:37:33SPEAKER_08: But I feel good and I appreciate uh Tom and all the hard work he does.
- 1:37:39SPEAKER_08: Go a little bit out of order here.
- 1:37:41SPEAKER_08: The big race, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon was, of course, on Sunday.
- 1:37:48SPEAKER_08: But let's kick off with that one because we had a bunch of friends there, and I want to cover as many of their reports as we can.
- 1:37:58SPEAKER_08: First of all, every one of them said it was a hot day in Chicago.
- 1:38:02SPEAKER_08: It was a hot day for a marathon, I believe it was.
- 1:38:05SPEAKER_08: Let's start with our friend Allie without a knee.
- 1:38:07SPEAKER_08: A year ago, she ran Marine Corps, finished that one with a significant stress fracture in her neck and her femur.
- 1:38:15SPEAKER_08: It took eight months before she was cleared to run again, and she put in so much work getting to this start line.
- 1:38:22SPEAKER_08: I personally know that she did.
- 1:38:24SPEAKER_08: It was tough for her, but she did it.
- 1:38:27SPEAKER_08: We are all very proud of Allie.
- 1:38:29SPEAKER_08: Finishing this one, she had three goals, she reached all three.
- 1:38:33SPEAKER_08: She finished on a hot day in less than five hours and 15 minutes.
- 1:38:39SPEAKER_08: Other friends who were there, Amy was there, as was Adrian earning her second star.
- 1:38:44SPEAKER_08: Audra was there.
- 1:38:46SPEAKER_08: Bob did his second Chicago.
- 1:38:48SPEAKER_08: This is the Bob we just referred to as the not that Bob in the roll call, who will be running the challenge at Wine and Dine weekend.
- 1:38:58SPEAKER_08: Brandon did his first world major and second major overall.
- 1:39:01SPEAKER_08: Really great for all the holler hypes that helped him get through a very mentally difficult run.
- 1:39:07SPEAKER_08: Uh happy to report that this was a PR.
- 1:39:11SPEAKER_08: Now, a lot of friends talked about the holler hypes, and I almost forgot a story I needed to tell.
- 1:39:16SPEAKER_08: And my buddy Allie without an E does not know this.
- 1:39:21SPEAKER_08: But Allie is a big Philadelphia Eagles fan, as am I.
- 1:39:26SPEAKER_08: So I'm at what we call Tampadelphia, which is a bar and grill here where literally a couple hundred Philadelphia Eagles fans gather to watch the game.
- 1:39:37SPEAKER_08: The Eagles line up for an important field goal, and I get holler hype out.
- 1:39:42SPEAKER_08: Hey Allie, it's Bob.
- 1:39:44SPEAKER_08: The Eagles are lining up for a 50-yard field goal to win the game.
- 1:39:49SPEAKER_08: The kick's away, it looks good.
- 1:39:50SPEAKER_08: It looks good.
- 1:39:52SPEAKER_08: It's good.
- 1:39:53SPEAKER_08: They're gonna win this one.
- 1:39:55SPEAKER_08: Happy running.
- 1:39:57SPEAKER_08: And eight seconds later.
- 1:39:59SPEAKER_08: End recording.
- 1:40:00SPEAKER_08: Yeah, if you're not an NFL fan, eight seconds later, the Eagles lose.
- 1:40:04SPEAKER_08: I go, oh no.
- 1:40:06SPEAKER_08: Oh no.
- 1:40:07SPEAKER_08: Because I know this is really gonna hype her up.
- 1:40:09SPEAKER_08: She's a big fan.
- 1:40:11SPEAKER_08: I go back and I go, now I gotta do a recording that says, I'm sorry, they lost.
- 1:40:17SPEAKER_08: And I look, and I hadn't sent the first hype.
- 1:40:20SPEAKER_08: Oh no.
- 1:40:21SPEAKER_08: You know, I had done everything but down at the bottom where it says send hype, I never hit it.
- 1:40:28SPEAKER_07: Well, Bob, I'm glad to see that you were the not the only one because I I was also setting her um Eagles updates hypes uh through throughout the day.
- 1:40:37SPEAKER_07: But unfortunately, I was so depressed that I even even before that uh go ahead field goal kick for us.
- 1:40:44SPEAKER_07: Um yeah, I didn't say that one.
- 1:40:46SPEAKER_07: So thank thanks for at least attempting to do your due diligence there that to make up for uh my lack of interest.
- 1:40:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but a whole lot of friends, a whole lot of friends here on Chicago talked about the hypes.
- 1:40:58SPEAKER_08: Uh let's see, where was I?
- 1:40:59SPEAKER_08: Brandy was there.
- 1:41:00SPEAKER_08: Brandy said it was a great experience, but this one's one and done for Brandy.
- 1:41:04SPEAKER_08: Uh any race with friends is a good one.
- 1:41:06SPEAKER_08: She loved running with her name on her shirt.
- 1:41:09SPEAKER_08: She's a fine girl, you know.
- 1:41:11SPEAKER_08: What a good wife she.
- 1:41:12SPEAKER_08: Oh, that's you guys are too young to know that song.
- 1:41:14SPEAKER_08: John Maine, John may know it.
- 1:41:16SPEAKER_10: Actually, they probably all know it.
- 1:41:18SPEAKER_10: They all know it because that song was in Guardians of the Galaxy.
- 1:41:22SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 1:41:22SPEAKER_08: It's 1972.
- 1:41:23SPEAKER_08: Looking glass.
- 1:41:24SPEAKER_08: 1972.
- 1:41:26SPEAKER_08: Uh, Brandy says the snacks were great, including her first keg stand in a long time.
- 1:41:31SPEAKER_07: I was gonna say, I'm surprised she's one and done with this because she told me about the keg stand, and I figured if you're gonna do a keg stand during a marathon, it's gonna bring it back.
- 1:41:39SPEAKER_07: Yes, so did Anthony Rizzo.
- 1:41:42SPEAKER_08: Well, that's true, true, true.
- 1:41:43SPEAKER_08: Uh Brandy PR, 21 minutes.
- 1:41:47SPEAKER_08: Oh, see, Brian was there.
- 1:41:48SPEAKER_08: Carrie was doing Chicago for the fifth time.
- 1:41:50SPEAKER_08: It's a herm to her hometown.
- 1:41:52SPEAKER_08: She loves the energy that the race brings to the whole city.
- 1:41:55SPEAKER_08: The people do show up, as they do for all the world majors.
- 1:41:59SPEAKER_08: Late nights, early mornings.
- 1:42:00SPEAKER_08: She was volunteering at the expo.
- 1:42:02SPEAKER_08: That really drained her, but she showed up, nerves and all, gave it her best.
- 1:42:06SPEAKER_08: That's all you can do.
- 1:42:08SPEAKER_08: She felt good, finished better than the last two marathons.
- 1:42:12SPEAKER_08: Happy was she that she was successful in completing marathon number 16.
- 1:42:19SPEAKER_08: That was Carrie M from Chicago.
- 1:42:22SPEAKER_08: Carrie V earned her fourth star.
- 1:42:26SPEAKER_08: All the summer training came in handy because despite the heat, Chicago was a great course, lots of spectators throughout the run.
- 1:42:35SPEAKER_08: Her fourth world major.
- 1:42:37SPEAKER_08: Looking forward to earning four or maybe five more in the coming years.
- 1:42:42SPEAKER_08: Chelsea was there earning her first star, running as a part of Team Abbott.
- 1:42:47SPEAKER_08: Late injury put this race in doubt for her, but she got permission to give it a try.
- 1:42:51SPEAKER_08: Uh made it to the last five miles, then walked it in to get that first star.
- 1:42:56SPEAKER_08: That's great, Chelsea.
- 1:42:58SPEAKER_08: Dorothy finished, and as soon as she did, she entered the lottery for 2027.
- 1:43:04SPEAKER_08: So it may have been one and done for Brandy, but Dorothy is coming back, at least going to try.
- 1:43:09SPEAKER_08: Struggled a bit with the heat, still finished with a 30-minute PR.
- 1:43:16SPEAKER_08: As many others said, she loved the holler hypes.
- 1:43:19SPEAKER_08: Emmy was there, had a really long week because Flying Pig had a night event on Tuesday.
- 1:43:26SPEAKER_08: Then they drove up and back to Chicago Thursday to get their bibs.
- 1:43:31SPEAKER_08: Emmy then worked the Queen Bee Expo in Cincinnati on Friday, then the race on Saturday, then they drove back to Chicago Sunday afternoon, then did the race on Sunday.
- 1:43:43SPEAKER_08: Well, you know, other than that, she didn't have much going on on the weekend.
- 1:43:46SPEAKER_08: Good job, Emmy, with that first star.
- 1:43:48SPEAKER_08: Heather was there.
- 1:43:49SPEAKER_08: Heather was rolling, said that the Last Hill nearly beat her, but she eked out a 38-second PR, which was 38 seconds faster than Berlin just a couple weeks ago.
- 1:44:01SPEAKER_08: Her last three world majors have all been PRs.
- 1:44:04SPEAKER_08: Really a testament to the fact that training pays off, and we know it does.
- 1:44:08SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah, she did the 5K too.
- 1:44:10SPEAKER_08: And in the 5K she got beat by a squirrel.
- 1:44:13SPEAKER_08: Another Heather was there earning her first star.
- 1:44:16SPEAKER_08: What a great day.
- 1:44:17SPEAKER_08: Came to Chicago with zero race expectation.
- 1:44:20SPEAKER_08: Really hadn't done much research.
- 1:44:22SPEAKER_08: Most times they say they pulled a jack, but she didn't use that phrase.
- 1:44:26SPEAKER_08: Crowd support was second to none, a 26.2 mile party.
- 1:44:31SPEAKER_08: Jay was there in Corral K.
- 1:44:33SPEAKER_08: His brother was in F, but his brother dropped back so they could run together.
- 1:44:37SPEAKER_08: A lot of energy along the course, more so even than Berlin a couple of weeks ago.
- 1:44:41SPEAKER_08: But the heat was a tremendous challenge, and just to sum things up, Jay gutted it out to finish.
- 1:44:48SPEAKER_08: Now, even with all the problems, this was still his second fastest marathon.
- 1:44:53SPEAKER_08: Jennifer ran her third fastest marathon ever and a decade PR at this her third Chicago marathon.
- 1:45:04SPEAKER_08: After training in Texas, she didn't have a lot of trouble with the heat.
- 1:45:08SPEAKER_08: Like others, she mentioned meeting former Chicago Cub Anthony Rizzo.
- 1:45:14SPEAKER_08: Julie was there, says this is a story of grit and cake.
- 1:45:19SPEAKER_08: After a spring filled with injuries limited her training, she was just grateful to be there.
- 1:45:25SPEAKER_08: Now, the cake part comes from a gentleman she met around mile four.
- 1:45:31SPEAKER_08: Julie was walking.
- 1:45:32SPEAKER_08: This fellow was walking home from the gym, asked if he could join her, and said, Oh, by the way, I just baked a cake.
- 1:45:38SPEAKER_08: Would you like a piece?
- 1:45:40SPEAKER_08: Why not?
- 1:45:41SPEAKER_08: She got a piece of this delicious freshly baked cake.
- 1:45:45SPEAKER_08: Continuing on, Catherine N and Catherine W were birth both there for Catherine W, her first star.
- 1:45:55SPEAKER_08: Katie ran her first marathon.
- 1:45:58SPEAKER_08: Kim earned her first star.
- 1:46:02SPEAKER_08: Kimberly was there.
- 1:46:05SPEAKER_08: And Lucy earned her first star.
- 1:46:08SPEAKER_08: Megan did the 5K and the Marathon, earning her second star and PRing on this hot day.
- 1:46:16SPEAKER_08: The 29 neighborhoods of Chicago come out to party.
- 1:46:20SPEAKER_08: The race was well supported and fun from start to finish.
- 1:46:24SPEAKER_08: They ended the day with a steak dinner at Gibson's and later evening a Portillos run for a Chicago-style hot dog and cake shake.
- 1:46:34SPEAKER_07: Those are some excellent food choices there for her.
- 1:46:38SPEAKER_08: Volvo.
- 1:46:38SPEAKER_08: You know those portillos in Orlando, right?
- 1:46:40SPEAKER_08: Yes, I did see they opened up one.
- 1:46:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:46:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it's been there for a little while.
- 1:46:43SPEAKER_08: There's also one not far from me.
- 1:46:46SPEAKER_08: Melody has quite a story.
- 1:46:48SPEAKER_08: She calls it the ER to PR.
- 1:46:51SPEAKER_08: Uh the biggest takeaway from this weekend for her isn't the time on the clock, it's the people who showed up for her.
- 1:46:58SPEAKER_08: Sometimes plans change, the journey gets a bit message.
- 1:47:02SPEAKER_08: The journey gets a bit messy.
- 1:47:05SPEAKER_08: And the finish line looks a little different than you imagined.
- 1:47:07SPEAKER_08: But we keep showing up, we keep moving forward, and we celebrate what we can do.
- 1:47:13SPEAKER_08: Despite spending a little time in the ER before the race, Melody ran a 21-minute PR.
- 1:47:21SPEAKER_08: First world major, a whole lot of gratitude.
- 1:47:25SPEAKER_08: Samara was there.
- 1:47:27SPEAKER_08: This was her toughest marathon by far.
- 1:47:30SPEAKER_08: She was three years away from racing.
- 1:47:32SPEAKER_08: Training didn't go as she planned.
- 1:47:34SPEAKER_08: It was hot and it was gross.
- 1:47:36SPEAKER_08: But the important thing is she finished.
- 1:47:38SPEAKER_08: She finished with a seven-minute PR.
- 1:47:41SPEAKER_08: And let's wrap things up with the fella who introduced this entire episode.
- 1:47:46SPEAKER_08: That's Troy from Spring Hill, Florida, earning his first world major star.
- 1:47:53SPEAKER_08: After a year filled with injuries and setbacks, Chicago was a physical and mental test for him.
- 1:47:59SPEAKER_08: He didn't PR the race, but he set a holler hype PR.
- 1:48:03SPEAKER_08: Friends, 216 of you sent hypes to Troy.
- 1:48:10SPEAKER_08: And he he deserved them.
- 1:48:12SPEAKER_08: We should check with Emily Emily if that's like a holler hype record or not.
- 1:48:16SPEAKER_08: Oh, it's gotta be.
- 1:48:17SPEAKER_08: It's gotta be.
- 1:48:18SPEAKER_08: I will, I need to get in contact with Emily anyway, but I'm sure it is.
- 1:48:22SPEAKER_08: So there we go.
- 1:48:23SPEAKER_08: That's our friends who ran Chicago, and we will try to get a little more detail on the Chicago Marathon next episode.
- 1:48:31SPEAKER_08: All right, so we went a little bit out of order because I wanted to uh get that world major in at the top.
- 1:48:37SPEAKER_08: So let's go back now.
- 1:48:38SPEAKER_08: Let's go back to Saturday.
- 1:48:40SPEAKER_08: And here's another major event: the UTMB Kodiak 100 in Big Bear Lake, California.
- 1:48:46SPEAKER_08: This occurred from October 8th to the 11th, and our buddy Adam did this one.
- 1:48:53SPEAKER_08: He put in a long race report on a long race.
- 1:48:56SPEAKER_08: Adam had been battling Vertigo, which cleared up for him just in time to get to the start line, but it also showed up again a little bit at the start of the race.
- 1:49:06SPEAKER_08: That cleared up for him.
- 1:49:08SPEAKER_08: This uh reading Adam's highs and lows of this long run kind of reminded me of reading uh Dean Carnassus' stories of some of his long runs.
- 1:49:19SPEAKER_08: Uh, one of the things that happened to Adam is he took a fall at mile 53.
- 1:49:23SPEAKER_08: He says, I took a fall, I waited for the pain that didn't come, so I got up, but his hand hurt a little.
- 1:49:31SPEAKER_08: Bottom line, Adam finished this 100-mile event, but that hand that hurt a little, it wound up being broken.
- 1:49:38SPEAKER_08: Yikes.
- 1:49:39SPEAKER_08: Nonetheless, he'll be pacing next week.
- 1:49:42SPEAKER_08: Got to acknowledge his friend and our friend Chad, another ultra marathoner.
- 1:49:47SPEAKER_08: Chad has been a tremendous help to Adam and I think several other ultra marathoners as their support crew.
- 1:49:57SPEAKER_08: We were talking about uh Emmy running uh Chicago.
- 1:50:00SPEAKER_08: We talked about the Queen Bee half marathon in Cincinnati.
- 1:50:03SPEAKER_08: Iliana was there, ran that one.
- 1:50:06SPEAKER_08: The Bearcat half marathon took place in Boonville, Arkansas.
- 1:50:11SPEAKER_08: Ryan was there.
- 1:50:13SPEAKER_08: Race number 37 for 2026 and half marathon number 61.
- 1:50:18SPEAKER_08: At one hour 42 minutes, he finished third overall.
- 1:50:22SPEAKER_08: Outstanding.
- 1:50:24SPEAKER_08: Calls this the definition of a small town race.
- 1:50:27SPEAKER_08: The course isn't the easiest.
- 1:50:28SPEAKER_08: There are nice flat stretches and downhills, but there's also considerable climbs.
- 1:50:33SPEAKER_08: He ran down the third place runner in order to finish third in just the last mile.
- 1:50:39SPEAKER_08: Great job, Ryan.
- 1:50:40SPEAKER_08: Karen was in Corpus Christi, Texas for the Coastal Bend Blood Center run for blood.
- 1:50:47SPEAKER_08: The 10K was two 5K loops on a very warm day.
- 1:50:50SPEAKER_08: She was able to keep a steady pace with her intervals and finish within her goal of getting under an hour and a half, finished, beat that by over two minutes.
- 1:50:59SPEAKER_08: This is her fastest 10K since she's gotten back to running.
- 1:51:03SPEAKER_08: She's really thrilled with that.
- 1:51:05SPEAKER_08: Boston, Massachusetts, held the Boston 10K for women.
- 1:51:09SPEAKER_08: Heidi was there.
- 1:51:10SPEAKER_08: Boston was sunny and in the 60s, 50th anniversary of this race.
- 1:51:15SPEAKER_08: Women running today that had run all 49 prior races.
- 1:51:19SPEAKER_08: Heidi wasn't one of them.
- 1:51:20SPEAKER_08: This, however, was her third time.
- 1:51:23SPEAKER_08: Audrey and Sophie were there.
- 1:51:25SPEAKER_08: Perfect weather for this.
- 1:51:27SPEAKER_08: The second longest running all women's sporting event in the world.
- 1:51:33SPEAKER_08: Audrey was so close to another PR.
- 1:51:35SPEAKER_08: Not quite, though.
- 1:51:36SPEAKER_08: Her goal was to run Disney proof of time.
- 1:51:38SPEAKER_08: Didn't quite get there.
- 1:51:40SPEAKER_08: Still gotten much stronger, much faster.
- 1:51:42SPEAKER_08: Really proud of herself.
- 1:51:45SPEAKER_08: Sophie, Audrey's sister, Sophie, signed up before she was pregnant.
- 1:51:50SPEAKER_08: Really wanted to do it and still participate.
- 1:51:53SPEAKER_08: Probably her favorite non non-run Disney race.
- 1:51:58SPEAKER_08: Super proud.
- 1:51:58SPEAKER_08: She was able to get in.
- 1:51:59SPEAKER_08: She was able to finish.
- 1:52:01SPEAKER_08: She was one place in front of the final finisher.
- 1:52:04SPEAKER_08: So she got some really great unobstructed finish line photos.
- 1:52:08SPEAKER_08: And we got a bonus here in the Boston Women's 10K.
- 1:52:11SPEAKER_08: Audrey's daughter, Melody, finished up her fall season with the Healthy Kids Running Series with a new quarter mile PR.
- 1:52:22SPEAKER_08: Way to go, Melody.
- 1:52:25SPEAKER_08: The finish on the field 5K took place in Knoxville, Tennessee.
- 1:52:30SPEAKER_08: Megan was there, said Knoxville was chilly.
- 1:52:34SPEAKER_08: Boston was warm, Knoxville was chilly.
- 1:52:36SPEAKER_08: That's okay.
- 1:52:37SPEAKER_08: Lots of rain.
- 1:52:37SPEAKER_08: That's right.
- 1:52:38SPEAKER_08: The storm was just going through there, just or just had passed through there.
- 1:52:43SPEAKER_08: Not her greatest race, but that happens.
- 1:52:45SPEAKER_08: It's the second race in the series with the Knoxville Track Club.
- 1:52:48SPEAKER_08: Last year they finished in Nayland Stadium, and this year they finished on the Covenant Health Park Field.
- 1:52:55SPEAKER_08: The organization and flow of traffic and runners was much improved.
- 1:52:59SPEAKER_08: Definitely made up for the chaos of last year's race.
- 1:53:04SPEAKER_08: I think I remember that one.
- 1:53:05SPEAKER_08: They had a big backup getting into the field.
- 1:53:08SPEAKER_08: I mean, minutes they were stuck in line getting into the field.
- 1:53:13SPEAKER_08: Based on the comments I saw, I believe Elizabeth was there too.
- 1:53:18SPEAKER_08: In Greentown, Pennsylvania, the Pocono Mountains Marathon Race Festival.
- 1:53:24SPEAKER_08: Rebecca was there running the 5K out and back course along Lake Wallampak in Pennsylvania.
- 1:53:32SPEAKER_08: I only mention that because I like saying Wallampaupak.
- 1:53:35SPEAKER_08: The weather was cool, started in the mid-40s, but nice, slightly hilly course.
- 1:53:40SPEAKER_08: Overall, beautiful views of the lake.
- 1:53:43SPEAKER_08: Leaves are starting to turn in that part of Pennsylvania.
- 1:53:47SPEAKER_08: Couple of dogs on the course, including one registered with his own bib.
- 1:53:51SPEAKER_08: Rebecca ran a 5K PR.
- 1:53:57SPEAKER_08: In Cape May, New Jersey, Shamika ran the Always Ready 5K.
- 1:54:03SPEAKER_08: That is at the US Coast Guard Training Base in Cape May.
- 1:54:09SPEAKER_08: Always ready, Semper Paratus, the motto of the Coast Guard.
- 1:54:15SPEAKER_08: 5K is a nice flat course.
- 1:54:17SPEAKER_08: It goes through part of the Coast Guard training base.
- 1:54:20SPEAKER_08: The cadets run the course as a unit after the last set of runners start.
- 1:54:24SPEAKER_08: Like having a unit of balloon ladies you can hear coming because they're doing their Jody calls while they run.
- 1:54:30SPEAKER_08: Except nobody gets swept.
- 1:54:32SPEAKER_08: Her goal was to PR, which she did.
- 1:54:34SPEAKER_08: She did it by two minutes and 13 seconds.
- 1:54:38SPEAKER_08: The Oneida Lake half marathon in Brewerton, New York, Zach was there, finished in just under two hours, 11 minutes.
- 1:54:46SPEAKER_08: Completed all nine half marathons that a local race director director offered this year.
- 1:54:54SPEAKER_08: There was a Spartan Kids race in Orlando, Spartan Kids 3K.
- 1:54:59SPEAKER_08: Adam's son Connor did it.
- 1:55:01SPEAKER_08: Connor nailed it, even with the course being flooded and it was very warm.
- 1:55:05SPEAKER_08: He earned his trifecta for completing his third Spartan race this year.
- 1:55:09SPEAKER_08: Well done, Connor.
- 1:55:12SPEAKER_08: Back in Boston, there was a Boston Firefighter Memorial 10K.
- 1:55:16SPEAKER_08: Scott did it, said it was a flat, fast course with awesome shirts and medals and an after party.
- 1:55:22SPEAKER_08: PR for Scott.
- 1:55:24SPEAKER_08: First miles were way too fast, but he held on to finish.
- 1:55:28SPEAKER_08: The Boston Fire Department put on a great show.
- 1:55:31SPEAKER_08: Sarah and her husband Mike were there.
- 1:55:34SPEAKER_08: Fifth time on this one.
- 1:55:35SPEAKER_08: They did the 10K on this gorgeous fall morning.
- 1:55:39SPEAKER_08: Mike's a local firefighter himself, so the race is extra special to them.
- 1:55:43SPEAKER_08: No PRs, but another fun race in the books.
- 1:55:47SPEAKER_08: Robbie.
- 1:55:48SPEAKER_08: Robbie was in Central Florida this time for the You Can Finish Distance Dare Challenge at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
- 1:55:58SPEAKER_08: Two-mile run, then a five-mile run.
- 1:56:00SPEAKER_08: People doing the challenge did both back to back.
- 1:56:03SPEAKER_08: Still, it was a hot and humid weekend in Florida.
- 1:56:06SPEAKER_08: They ran out of two-mile medals.
- 1:56:08SPEAKER_08: Apparently, they're going to get more and mail them out to people who didn't get them.
- 1:56:11SPEAKER_08: I had that happen at a recent race.
- 1:56:13SPEAKER_08: There was a run among the lakes, a 5K in Windermere, Florida.
- 1:56:17SPEAKER_08: Mary was there.
- 1:56:19SPEAKER_08: The finale of her 14-mile scheduled run.
- 1:56:23SPEAKER_08: She found her nephew who was volunteering with his C cadets, and he was the best cheerleader for her on that last mile coming in.
- 1:56:30SPEAKER_08: Such a fun race.
- 1:56:31SPEAKER_08: They had a Chick-fil-A chicken biscuit waiting for him at the finish line.
- 1:56:35SPEAKER_08: And our friend Roxanne was there as well.
- 1:56:39SPEAKER_07: Alright, let's talk Chick-fil-A here for a second.
- 1:56:42SPEAKER_07: Has anyone tried?
- 1:56:44SPEAKER_07: I know that you talk that the race had the biscuit sandwich.
- 1:56:47SPEAKER_07: Has anyone tried the waffle breakfast sandwich or I guess all day sandwich yet?
- 1:56:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it is all day.
- 1:56:53SPEAKER_08: Rebecca has.
- 1:56:54SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:56:55SPEAKER_08: She likes them.
- 1:56:58SPEAKER_08: It's kind of like the uh the uh McDonald's has something similar.
- 1:57:04SPEAKER_08: Or the waffle more or less.
- 1:57:05SPEAKER_08: A griddle is that what they call them?
- 1:57:08SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:57:08SPEAKER_08: I think it's where the waffle more or less has the syrup cooked into it.
- 1:57:13SPEAKER_08: So it's kind of sweet.
- 1:57:15SPEAKER_08: But yeah, Becky, in fact, Becky had one this week.
- 1:57:17SPEAKER_08: She had the spicy chicken and waffle.
- 1:57:21SPEAKER_08: So she likes them.
- 1:57:22SPEAKER_07: Nobody else?
- 1:57:24SPEAKER_07: I haven't tried it yet, so that's why I was asking for the review.
- 1:57:26SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 1:57:27SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it's probably worth a try.
- 1:57:29SPEAKER_08: Let's see.
- 1:57:29SPEAKER_08: In Massachusetts again, this time North Andover, the 15th annual Nights on the Run 5K.
- 1:57:34SPEAKER_08: Scott was there.
- 1:57:36SPEAKER_08: Great community run over, nice rolling hills.
- 1:57:38SPEAKER_08: Beautiful morning for a fun community event.
- 1:57:41SPEAKER_08: Not a PR, but a solid run.
- 1:57:44SPEAKER_08: T-shirts, a water stop, traditional snacks at the end.
- 1:57:48SPEAKER_08: Didn't love the little section of pea stone just before the end.
- 1:57:52SPEAKER_08: I assume he's talking about the gravel on the course.
- 1:57:55SPEAKER_08: Had the run over.
- 1:57:57SPEAKER_08: Cedar Rapids, Iowa had the hot cider hustle 10K.
- 1:58:01SPEAKER_08: Sherry ran it.
- 1:58:01SPEAKER_08: Warmer than she'd hoped.
- 1:58:03SPEAKER_08: Still a great race.
- 1:58:04SPEAKER_08: Didn't get a PR a Disney POT, but did get first in her age group.
- 1:58:10SPEAKER_08: The best part was seeing her son and his family cheering for her at the finish line.
- 1:58:17SPEAKER_08: Let's wrap up Saturday in Long Beach, California at the Aquarium of the Pacific, where they had a 5K.
- 1:58:24SPEAKER_08: Michael did it.
- 1:58:26SPEAKER_08: This is the first of two weekend races in Long Beach.
- 1:58:30SPEAKER_08: Michael did this 5K, ran a PR with a time of 30 minutes two seconds.
- 1:58:37SPEAKER_08: I've been to that aquarium.
- 1:58:38SPEAKER_08: It's gorgeous.
- 1:58:41SPEAKER_08: Friends, let us move to Sunday.
- 1:58:43SPEAKER_08: We're going to start out in Staten Island, New York for the Staten Island half marathon, the Stormy Edition.
- 1:58:51SPEAKER_08: This one is.
- 1:58:52SPEAKER_08: We had a couple friends run that, and one of them is visiting with us here in the Race Report spotlight.
- 1:58:59SPEAKER_08: Shivani, welcome to the podcast.
- 1:59:02SPEAKER_01: Hi guys, I'm Shivani and I live in Jersey City.
- 1:59:07SPEAKER_08: So Shivani lives in Jersey City, not too far from John.
- 1:59:10SPEAKER_08: So uh Jack's here with me also for the spotlight.
- 1:59:13SPEAKER_08: We're just going to sit back and let John and Shivani talk.
- 1:59:16SPEAKER_10: Well, let's talk about food and all the good stuff that Jersey has going on.
- 1:59:20SPEAKER_10: You know?
- 1:59:21SPEAKER_10: Why don't you kick it off, John?
- 1:59:22SPEAKER_10: You know how to do it.
- 1:59:23SPEAKER_10: Okay, so here's the question we ask everybody on our race report.
- 1:59:26SPEAKER_10: How did you get start running?
- 1:59:28SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I'm a pretty beginner runner.
- 1:59:32SPEAKER_01: So I just started in 2024, interestingly, at wine and nine.
- 1:59:38SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, I mean, being a New Yorker, you always see people running.
- 1:59:43SPEAKER_01: And I never thought that I would, you know, as an overweight person, I'm like, oh, cardio, okay, I'm not doing that.
- 1:59:50SPEAKER_01: And I was always very active, but then I was always into like strength training or more so like circuit training, etc.
- 1:59:57SPEAKER_01: But never thought that, you know, long races are for me.
- 2:00:01SPEAKER_01: But then it started with Disney because I'm a Disney adult.
- 2:00:05SPEAKER_01: And then when I went to Disney World, I just saw like people, you know, running there.
- 2:00:09SPEAKER_01: So I started with 10K.
- 2:00:12SPEAKER_01: And after that, I mean, I don't know.
- 2:00:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, I just thought that, you know, I can go further.
- 2:00:18SPEAKER_01: And then I got introduced to Jeff Galloway Method.
- 2:00:21SPEAKER_01: And then I met him in person, and that changed my life.
- 2:00:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, every single race, whenever like I run, still I run, I just owe it to him.
- 2:00:31SPEAKER_01: Because without him, it is it was impossible.
- 2:00:34SPEAKER_01: Like I could not have thought without him, like to cross any of the finish lines, honestly.
- 2:00:40SPEAKER_01: Because, of course, I mean, I cannot uh I can just run walk, I cannot like run throughout the race.
- 2:00:47SPEAKER_01: And of course, yeah.
- 2:00:49SPEAKER_08: Shivani, he would be so proud of you, you can't even believe it.
- 2:00:55SPEAKER_08: Jeff, you are the type of person that meant everything to Jeff Calloway.
- 2:01:01SPEAKER_08: And you talk about Run Disney.
- 2:01:04SPEAKER_08: That's what Run Disney is.
- 2:01:07SPEAKER_08: Look at the people out there running.
- 2:01:09SPEAKER_08: You got outstanding athletes who are running five, six minutes a mile.
- 2:01:14SPEAKER_08: You got folks who are having a hard time keeping up, but by golly, they're out there doing it.
- 2:01:19SPEAKER_08: I think it's great.
- 2:01:21SPEAKER_08: I think it's awesome.
- 2:01:22SPEAKER_08: And I'm proud, I'm proud of you.
- 2:01:24SPEAKER_08: We're proud of you, but I I know.
- 2:01:27SPEAKER_08: I know Jeff would have just loved it.
- 2:01:29SPEAKER_08: He would have eaten that up.
- 2:01:30SPEAKER_08: He would have loved hearing that.
- 2:01:31SPEAKER_08: Well, listen, John, I'm I'm sorry, I interrupted you.
- 2:01:34SPEAKER_08: Uh you may continue.
- 2:01:36SPEAKER_10: This race is in Staten Island, so it's uh little what do you call right over the bridge.
- 2:01:42SPEAKER_10: So uh can you tell us about this race?
- 2:01:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I mean it was totally wild because on Saturday I was still like refreshing, kept on refreshing the NYRR page, thinking that it would definitely get canceled.
- 2:01:57SPEAKER_01: But last year, actually, it was canceled, but then the weather actually uh dug out.
- 2:02:03SPEAKER_01: Like there was no not a drop of rain last year.
- 2:02:05SPEAKER_01: So this time maybe they thought the same and they went with it, but then it was pouring rain.
- 2:02:12SPEAKER_01: So basically, I mean, again, I mean, on Saturday I finished my solo half in Central Park, which is again hilly, and then coming to this race, they did not cancel it and they started on time.
- 2:02:24SPEAKER_01: And throughout the race, it was raining, and then it was my first rainy race, so to say.
- 2:02:32SPEAKER_01: And yeah, and second half, I mean, winds became brutal, and then of course, I mean, uh, I finished in the rain, but yeah, but it was quite an experience.
- 2:02:45SPEAKER_01: When I came home, my like feet were like totally white.
- 2:02:49SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:02:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:02:51SPEAKER_01: So, but then I finished my nine plus one and four out of six with this race too, which is amazing.
- 2:02:59SPEAKER_08: So explain explain a little bit.
- 2:03:02SPEAKER_08: A lot of our friends know what that is, but not everybody does.
- 2:03:04SPEAKER_08: Explain what that is.
- 2:03:05SPEAKER_01: Okay, so so since uh running in New York is a thing now and everybody wants to uh run the NYC half and NYC marathon, so NYC when so NYC half happens in March, and to qualify for that race, you of course, I mean, you have the lottery option.
- 2:03:24SPEAKER_01: Another option is if you can complete four races out of the six races in the year, you can directly qualify for the NYC half.
- 2:03:36SPEAKER_01: And NYRR nine plus one program is for NYC Marathon, where you complete nine races and then volunteer in one race in that particular year to qualify for the next year.
- 2:03:48SPEAKER_01: So this one was for 2027 NYC Marathon.
- 2:03:52SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 2:03:53SPEAKER_08: Because you're already in for 26 in a couple weeks, right?
- 2:03:57SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 2:03:58SPEAKER_08: And then you're set for 27.
- 2:04:00SPEAKER_08: Are are you by chance coming down to Wine and Dine?
- 2:04:04SPEAKER_01: No.
- 2:04:05SPEAKER_01: No, so you guys will yeah, so you guys will see me in uh the marathon weekend.
- 2:04:12SPEAKER_01: So I'm doing the marathon.
- 2:04:14SPEAKER_01: This is my first Disney marathon.
- 2:04:16SPEAKER_01: But of course, I mean, whenever I taught to run marathon, I was like, I cannot betray New York.
- 2:04:21SPEAKER_01: So I have to run it first, and then I go to Disney.
- 2:04:24SPEAKER_08: Oh, I think that's great.
- 2:04:25SPEAKER_08: That's great.
- 2:04:26SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I think that's terrific.
- 2:04:28SPEAKER_10: Running through Staten Island, it's the start of where you start for the New York City marathon.
- 2:04:34SPEAKER_10: Tell us about this course.
- 2:04:36SPEAKER_01: So the course actually, uh, apart from mile two and mile eight to nine, is pretty flat, but mile two and mile eight incline is brutal.
- 2:04:51SPEAKER_01: Like it's not even like like it's steep, steep.
- 2:04:55SPEAKER_01: It's like a it's like climbing a hill.
- 2:04:58SPEAKER_01: So yeah, an overall elevation, I think it's around, I might be wrong, but it's around 400 feet.
- 2:05:06SPEAKER_01: But then one steep hill would be like around 150 feet elevation.
- 2:05:11unknown: Yeah.
- 2:05:11SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 2:05:12unknown: Yeah.
- 2:05:12SPEAKER_10: That's a that's a from from what do you call that area up to going because I guess this starts at the uh the ferry station, correct?
- 2:05:21SPEAKER_01: Yes, St.
- 2:05:22SPEAKER_01: George's, yeah.
- 2:05:22SPEAKER_10: Yeah, run and runs down past Fort Waynesworth and all the way down.
- 2:05:26SPEAKER_10: Yes, yes, yes.
- 2:05:28SPEAKER_10: Okay, yeah, that that's a steep hill.
- 2:05:30SPEAKER_08: That's a nice little hill over there.
- 2:05:31SPEAKER_10: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:05:33SPEAKER_08: See, Jack, I told you John and Shivani can handle this, right?
- 2:05:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:05:39SPEAKER_13: I've never been to oh well, I can't say I've never been to New York.
- 2:05:43SPEAKER_13: I haven't been to New York City.
- 2:05:44SPEAKER_13: Here we go.
- 2:05:46SPEAKER_13: But I know those bridges are really yeah, I've been to New York for baptism, but it wasn't like the city, like the big apple or anything.
- 2:05:55SPEAKER_01: So oh, you have to come then.
- 2:05:57SPEAKER_13: Oh no, trust me, my husband really wants me to go.
- 2:06:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, of course.
- 2:06:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, and you have to run here.
- 2:06:05SPEAKER_13: Oh, yes.
- 2:06:06SPEAKER_13: It's so hard to get in though.
- 2:06:08SPEAKER_13: Uh, sooner or later.
- 2:06:11SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I see Jack run in New York City one of these days.
- 2:06:14SPEAKER_13: Oh, I'm if it's my first ever visit, I might freak out because I'll be like, oh, I'm gonna be like a, you know, just taking in all the sights before I actually no, I love that.
- 2:06:25SPEAKER_13: I love not knowing where I'm running it at.
- 2:06:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I know.
- 2:06:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 2:06:30SPEAKER_13: So Shivani, tell us about the I'm not gonna, I'm gonna butcher this.
- 2:06:35SPEAKER_13: Fair Verasani bridge?
- 2:06:37SPEAKER_13: Is it like Dasani?
- 2:06:39SPEAKER_13: Wait, no.
- 2:06:40SPEAKER_10: It's the Sani.
- 2:06:41SPEAKER_10: Okay, let me put it in the we'll give you partial credit, Jack.
- 2:06:45SPEAKER_13: Okay, sorry.
- 2:06:47SPEAKER_13: Tell us about this bridge.
- 2:06:54SPEAKER_01: Okay, so so we were running past where Verizano.
- 2:07:01SPEAKER_10: I'm so sorry.
- 2:07:03SPEAKER_10: Verizano Narrows Bridge.
- 2:07:05SPEAKER_10: There we go.
- 2:07:06SPEAKER_01: So we ran uh near Verizano Narrows Bit Bridge, where we start the NYC Marathon 2.
- 2:07:16SPEAKER_01: And yeah, the views were spectacular.
- 2:07:18SPEAKER_01: Like we were literally running below it.
- 2:07:24SPEAKER_08: Well, it's a it's a it's a two-level bridge, isn't it?
- 2:07:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:07:28SPEAKER_01: But we were not inside it.
- 2:07:29SPEAKER_01: So in NYC Marathon, basically you run on it, but this one, no, it it was just the views of the bridge.
- 2:07:35SPEAKER_08: Oh, okay, okay, okay.
- 2:07:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:07:38SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 2:07:39SPEAKER_08: But it's still spectacular.
- 2:07:40SPEAKER_08: You get to look out over the uh that's not a bay there, it's it's a river, right?
- 2:07:45SPEAKER_10: Basically where the river meets the sea.
- 2:07:47SPEAKER_10: Yeah, yeah, it's it's it's it's the bay.
- 2:07:50SPEAKER_10: It's the bay over there.
- 2:07:51SPEAKER_10: Yeah, it's the bay.
- 2:07:52SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 2:07:52SPEAKER_08: Okay, okay.
- 2:07:53SPEAKER_10: But you could see this uh you could see the sea, it's there.
- 2:07:57SPEAKER_08: You see the Statue of Liberty from there?
- 2:07:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so from the ferry, actually.
- 2:08:01SPEAKER_01: So the ferry from uh Manhattan to Staten Island is 30 minutes ferry, and then you see uh Statue of Liberty for free.
- 2:08:12SPEAKER_01: Actually, that's a good uh tourist, you know, quick tip.
- 2:08:16SPEAKER_01: That yeah, that for free you can see Statue of Liberty from that too.
- 2:08:21SPEAKER_08: Much perfect.
- 2:08:23SPEAKER_10: There's something else that's very uh how can I say this, interesting about this marathon, this half marathon.
- 2:08:30SPEAKER_10: Most of New York City marathons or half marathons are point-to-point.
- 2:08:34SPEAKER_10: This one is almost an out and back.
- 2:08:36SPEAKER_01: So it's out and back.
- 2:08:38SPEAKER_10: So you can end up where you started, which is a lot easier for people going to this event for transportation.
- 2:08:45SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 2:08:45SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 2:08:46SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, that's very easy.
- 2:08:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:08:49SPEAKER_01: And then out and back was, I mean, of course, it has its advantages, but then that day it felt like a disadvantage only because one way the wind was, you know, favoring us.
- 2:09:01SPEAKER_01: And then the moment we turned, then literally.
- 2:09:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:09:08SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 2:09:09SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah.
- 2:09:10SPEAKER_08: Well, listen, it sounds like you had fun, despite the rain.
- 2:09:13SPEAKER_08: So, you know, sometimes the rain it it's lousy when you're doing it, but when you're done, you got great stories to talk about, right?
- 2:09:22SPEAKER_08: Yes, yeah.
- 2:09:23SPEAKER_08: And uh as long as it's not freezing cold.
- 2:09:26SPEAKER_08: No, it was.
- 2:09:27SPEAKER_01: Actually, I would have appreciated if those guys would have had Mylar jackets, but they did not have anything.
- 2:09:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:09:35SPEAKER_01: Oh well.
- 2:09:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:09:35SPEAKER_08: Oh well, it was pretty chilly.
- 2:09:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:09:37SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I was literally shivering like a raccoon from top to bottom.
- 2:09:45SPEAKER_08: Well, we already you already told us when we'll see you next at Disney.
- 2:09:49SPEAKER_08: So that's great.
- 2:09:49SPEAKER_08: And we know you're running New York City Marathon.
- 2:09:52SPEAKER_08: That's coming up.
- 2:09:53SPEAKER_08: That's great.
- 2:09:54SPEAKER_08: We've had a fun time talking with you.
- 2:09:56SPEAKER_01: Same here.
- 2:09:57SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much again for inviting me.
- 2:10:00SPEAKER_08: Now, Caitlin also ran this race, said it rained the entire time.
- 2:10:04SPEAKER_08: Uh, this is our first time she really ran in the race, ran in the rain in her first non-run Disney half.
- 2:10:11SPEAKER_08: Uh, she's glad she made it through without any blisters or chafing.
- 2:10:14SPEAKER_08: Even better, the 10-minute PR in her first sub-three-hour half.
- 2:10:22SPEAKER_08: I mentioned the 5k in Long Beach at the end of Saturday.
- 2:10:25SPEAKER_08: Come back here on Sunday, and Michael did the Long Beach half marathon.
- 2:10:31SPEAKER_08: Maintained a 1059 pace, finished with an official time of two hours 24 minutes.
- 2:10:37SPEAKER_08: That's a PR.
- 2:10:38SPEAKER_08: 16 minutes faster than his last half marathon in May of this year.
- 2:10:44SPEAKER_08: All of the branch of services have their feature race.
- 2:10:47SPEAKER_08: You got the Marine Corps Marathon, the Air Force has a marathon in Dayton, Ohio.
- 2:10:52SPEAKER_08: The Army has a 10-mile in Washington, D.C.
- 2:10:55SPEAKER_08: It's a big deal.
- 2:10:56SPEAKER_08: We had a couple people there.
- 2:10:57SPEAKER_08: Jennifer was there, as was Divia.
- 2:11:00SPEAKER_08: Rondala was there with her husband.
- 2:11:01SPEAKER_08: Rondala says was very wet.
- 2:11:04SPEAKER_08: First time running, great race.
- 2:11:06SPEAKER_08: She's glad the worst of the rain came down after she finished.
- 2:11:11SPEAKER_08: She embraced the rain, embracing the suck, which is totally appropriate for an Army 10 miler.
- 2:11:18SPEAKER_08: Stay consistent.
- 2:11:19SPEAKER_08: No PR, but proud that she got it done.
- 2:11:24SPEAKER_08: In Mandeville, Louisiana, they ran the North Shore half marathon and 10 miler.
- 2:11:29SPEAKER_08: Emily did it.
- 2:11:30SPEAKER_08: Emily said this year the weekend offered something new.
- 2:11:34SPEAKER_08: The Fountain du Challenge.
- 2:11:37SPEAKER_08: Let's a runner earn an extra medal if they complete the 5K on Saturday evening and either a 10 mile or a half on Sunday.
- 2:11:45SPEAKER_08: Emily's a run Disney girl, so when the challenge is offered, you gotta anyway.
- 2:11:51SPEAKER_08: Weather wound up being great.
- 2:11:53SPEAKER_08: She planned to take both of these races at a moderate pace, but though not a PR.
- 2:12:00SPEAKER_08: She wound up age group second place in the 5K.
- 2:12:04SPEAKER_08: And taking it easy, she ran a 45-second PR in the half marathon at 148.50.
- 2:12:12SPEAKER_08: And then she ran seven more miles to complete her New York City training.
- 2:12:17SPEAKER_08: Good job, Emily.
- 2:12:19SPEAKER_08: Up in Canada in Victoria, British Columbia, the Royal Victoria Marathon.
- 2:12:24SPEAKER_08: Marty and Michael were there.
- 2:12:26SPEAKER_08: As was Lauren, marathon number 12 for Lauren.
- 2:12:29SPEAKER_08: Wasn't the day she was really hoping for, but was very comfortably sticking with the four-hour pacer.
- 2:12:36SPEAKER_08: And then a leg injury really turned out not to be an injury, thankfully.
- 2:12:40SPEAKER_08: Kicked in and she lost the pacer.
- 2:12:41SPEAKER_08: It was a gorgeous day, though, and the course is really scenic and beautiful.
- 2:12:45SPEAKER_08: Highly recommends both the half and the full there.
- 2:12:49SPEAKER_08: Christy felt strong throughout the entire race, and she ran a huge PR.
- 2:12:55SPEAKER_08: Christy's goal was to run 2 hours 15.
- 2:12:57SPEAKER_08: She ended up running 203.
- 2:13:00SPEAKER_08: Twenty years ago, she ran a 28.
- 2:13:02SPEAKER_08: 208.
- 2:13:04SPEAKER_08: Never thought she'd see that kind of time again.
- 2:13:06SPEAKER_08: But well done.
- 2:13:07SPEAKER_08: Well done, both of you.
- 2:13:09SPEAKER_08: All four of you there in British Columbia.
- 2:13:13SPEAKER_08: There was a fall prairie fire race in Wichita, Kansas.
- 2:13:18SPEAKER_08: Lena ran it.
- 2:13:20SPEAKER_08: In Hendersonville, North Carolina, Lessa did the 8K at the Black Bear Half Marathon and 8K.
- 2:13:29SPEAKER_08: Tracy was involved with the Track Shack Fanatics Series 3, race number 3.
- 2:13:35SPEAKER_08: The You Can Finish 5 Miler and 2 Miler Plus Challenge in Orlando.
- 2:13:41SPEAKER_08: New record for the longest title of a race, I think.
- 2:13:44SPEAKER_08: Tracy did the five-miler and the two miler, the double dare challenge, needed 20 on her training calendar, got up early, ran a half, then completed this challenge.
- 2:13:55SPEAKER_08: Beautiful weather throughout the event.
- 2:13:57SPEAKER_08: The UCF campus is lovely at 4 a.m.
- 2:14:01SPEAKER_08: And friends, this happens sometimes.
- 2:14:03SPEAKER_08: We get so many races on the race report.
- 2:14:05SPEAKER_08: I just recognize that that's the same race that Robbie ran, talked about it a few minutes ago.
- 2:14:11SPEAKER_08: Nevertheless, we'll move on.
- 2:14:13SPEAKER_08: In Chandler, Arizona, the brew ha ha 5K.
- 2:14:18SPEAKER_08: Kathy ran it.
- 2:14:19SPEAKER_08: Kathy's had a bone spur that she'd been rehabbing for the past two months.
- 2:14:24SPEAKER_08: Far succeeded her expectations.
- 2:14:27SPEAKER_08: Surprised herself to finish second in the age group.
- 2:14:31SPEAKER_08: What a fun fall fall race day and an awesome mug metal to sip some brew from.
- 2:14:37SPEAKER_08: Way to go, Kathy.
- 2:14:39SPEAKER_08: The Great Columbia Crossing 10K was in Astoria, Oregon.
- 2:14:44SPEAKER_08: Nora ran it.
- 2:14:45SPEAKER_08: The Astoria Megler Bridge is the longest continuous truss bridge in the United States.
- 2:14:52SPEAKER_08: Spans 4.1 miles.
- 2:14:55SPEAKER_08: It's almost a one-mile climb, one mile horizontal distance climbing to go 200 feet above the water at an 8% incline.
- 2:15:05SPEAKER_08: Bridges can be very tough.
- 2:15:07SPEAKER_08: 3,500 pedestrians ran, walked their way from Washington State to Oregon.
- 2:15:14SPEAKER_08: Stephanie was in Snowhomish, Washington for the Snowhomish River Run 10K.
- 2:15:21SPEAKER_08: Low 40s, cool and foggy this morning along the Snohomish River.
- 2:15:26SPEAKER_08: Made for optimal running conditions.
- 2:15:29SPEAKER_08: About the halfway mark, a bald eagle landed in a tree along the river and was still there on her way back.
- 2:15:35SPEAKER_08: That's an omen, Stephanie.
- 2:15:37SPEAKER_08: I don't know what it means.
- 2:15:38SPEAKER_08: It's gotta be good though, because she had this really fun race that she PR'd by two minutes.
- 2:15:45SPEAKER_08: They run a they don't ring a PR bell at this race, they ran a ring a PR gong.
- 2:15:51SPEAKER_08: Pretty cool.
- 2:15:53SPEAKER_08: Let's wrap up the race report in Ashland, Wisconsin, at the whistle stop half marathon, where Glenda ran preparing for wine and dine on a warm day in Wisconsin.
- 2:16:04SPEAKER_08: She wore a train engineer outfit that she made just for this race and got lots of cheers from folks running and watching.
- 2:16:12SPEAKER_08: Felt good throughout about mile nine, held a nice pace.
- 2:16:16SPEAKER_08: As it got warmer, she kind of fell off towards the end, but still, it was a good day.
- 2:16:23SPEAKER_08: And that's it, friends.
- 2:16:25SPEAKER_08: That is the race report for episode 254 of the Rise and Run podcast.
- 2:16:33SPEAKER_08: Friends, and if you run, you know you are our friend, and we are excited to be seeing you very, very soon.
- 2:16:42SPEAKER_08: Hope everything works out well for you.
- 2:16:44SPEAKER_08: Hope have a great travel to Florida from wherever you are coming.
- 2:16:50SPEAKER_08: And until then, happy running.
