- 0:03You've probably heard about GLP1 medications
- 0:06like ozempic and Zeppelin. Initially developed for
- 0:09diabetes, they have become significant
- 0:12for weight loss. Here's an
- 0:14essential truth. These medications are
- 0:17necessary for many people because people
- 0:19can't sustain weight loss through
- 0:23diet alone. In spite of what many
- 0:25gym bros will tell you today,
- 0:28we're going to tell you how you should eat if
- 0:31you're on a GLP1 medication. Now,
- 0:34we've covered some of this ground before, but
- 0:37never with such a verb.
- 0:42I am your Chief Medical Explanationist, Dr. Terry
- 0:44Simpson, and this is for
- 0:46Q4Q where we make sense of
- 0:49the madness, bust a few myths, and teach you a little bit
- 0:52about food as medicine.
- 0:58GLP1 medications have revolutionized weight
- 1:00loss and they will continue to do so.
- 1:03However, a critical question often remains.
- 1:06What should people eat while they're on these
- 1:09medications? Unfortunately, we have clear evidence based
- 1:12answers. While GLP1 drugs might help
- 1:15manage weight effectively, good nutrition
- 1:18is vital, especially when
- 1:20you have perceptibly inability to eat
- 1:23as much as you did before. Medication
- 1:26alone while delivering weight loss doesn't deliver
- 1:29optimal health, but combining it with a nutritious
- 1:32diet amplifies the benefits and ensures
- 1:35overall wellness. Weight loss is important,
- 1:38but we also aim to be healthy in the process.
- 1:41We discovered this during the time when I was doing weight loss
- 1:44surgery. It seems that I would look around
- 1:47and say, what is the optimal diet for people who've
- 1:50had weight loss surgery? And there were
- 1:52thousands of answers. Many weight loss surgeons had their
- 1:55own versions of diets and recipes,
- 1:58often falling into some low carb or keto
- 2:01ionosphere. And then I went to
- 2:03culinary medicine school and spent
- 2:06hours researching the various diets. Not
- 2:09from a perspective of, uh, the books that you
- 2:12find in a bookstore, the popular stuff you would
- 2:15see online. But what does the evidence
- 2:18actually show us? And it became
- 2:21very clear that the Mediterranean diet remains
- 2:24unmatched in providing long term health benefits.
- 2:27The diet, which is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains,
- 2:30legumes, lean proteins, healthy fats like olive oil,
- 2:32and even a little moderate wine consumption,
- 2:35enhances the benefits of my weight loss
- 2:38surgery patients. And now we're seeing
- 2:41the benefits in those patients on GLP1
- 2:43medications. We've talked extensively about the
- 2:46Mediterranean diet on 4Q and I invite you to go back and listen
- 2:49to those where we've highlighted its structured
- 2:52nutritional guidelines, such as consuming 9 ounces
- 2:55or 250 grams of fruits and vegetables daily,
- 2:57limiting red meat and alcohol, and prioritizing
- 3:00monounsaturated fatty acids.
- 3:03Numerous studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet reduces
- 3:06inflammation, decreases cardiovascular
- 3:09risks, improves cognitive function
- 3:12and lowers diabetes risks. For instance,
- 3:15there was a prediment study demonstrating the
- 3:17significant reduction in cardiovascular events,
- 3:20the Lyon Heart Study, which showed that people who had
- 3:23a heart attack their first heart attack had a
- 3:26reduction of almost 75% about getting a
- 3:29second heart attack by following a, um, Mediterranean diet.
- 3:32There was something called the EPIC study, which showed that there
- 3:35was a decrease in overall mortality, improved
- 3:38cancer outcomes and enhanced longevity among
- 3:41those who had the Mediterranean diet. Research
- 3:44has consistently shown improved cognitive function, reduced
- 3:47Alzheimer's risk, and associated with
- 3:50better insulin sensitivity and diabetes
- 3:53control. So you're probably wondering, where do
- 3:55I start? And there are some practical
- 3:58examples. Here's how you can incorporate a
- 4:00Mediterranean diet. For example, breakfast. You might consider
- 4:03some Greek yogurt toppled with fresh berries or one
- 4:06of my favorites, overnight oats with some mixed berries and
- 4:09fruits. You don't need too much of this, but
- 4:12not only will you feel better and have a good start to your day, but
- 4:15increasing fiber allows your guts to
- 4:18feel good and thank you. Lunch could be a colorful salad
- 4:21of leafy greens, chickpeas, tuna, avocado
- 4:24and stone fruits like peaches or nectarines
- 4:26drizzled with olive oil and some lemon juice.
- 4:29Dinner might be something simple like grilled salmon or chicken
- 4:32with quinoa or farro, along with some steamed or
- 4:35roasted vegetables like broccoli, asparagus or
- 4:37zucchini. Okay, one of those I actually
- 4:40like. These examples make adopting the
- 4:43Mediterranean lifestyle manageable and delicious. When I
- 4:46say one of those I might actually like, it's true there are many
- 4:49vegetables I don't like. Fortunately, there
- 4:52are plenty of vegetables out there, and that means
- 4:55that you aren't limited to what you find in the
- 4:57Mediterranean. For example, you might think rice is
- 4:59Mediterranean. It's not. You might think tomatoes are
- 5:02Mediterranean. Clearly it's not. But those are
- 5:05fruits and vegetables and whole grains that are beneficial
- 5:08in long term studies.
- 5:11So while GLP1 medications like Ozempic
- 5:13and Zeppelin effectively manage and treat
- 5:16obesity, pairing them with a Mediterranean
- 5:19diet optimizes your health, amplifying
- 5:22anti inflammatory and cardioprotective and anti cancer
- 5:25effects. With over 70 years of research and
- 5:28more than 13,000 scientific
- 5:30publications supporting it, the Mediterranean diet
- 5:33isn't just about regional cuisine.
- 5:36It's a scientifically validated approach
- 5:39detailing specific foods and amounts to
- 5:42boost overall health. So you won't just be
- 5:44losing weight, but you'll actively enhance your
- 5:47overall health. GLP1 drugs have
- 5:50revolutionized weight management, but true
- 5:53health emerges when combined with a nutritious,
- 5:55balanced diet. Not another protein bar,
- 5:58not another protein shake. And the Mediterranean diet, uh,
- 6:01clearly stands out for long term health improvements.
- 6:04Remember, it's not just about shedding pounds, it's about
- 6:07becoming healthier in the process.
- 6:10And don't forget to add a multivitamin
- 6:13to your list of things. If you're taking GLP1
- 6:15drugs, it is essential to be able to get
- 6:18adequate amounts of nutrition. And if you're
- 6:21not, Mediterranean diet. And adding a
- 6:23multivitamin is a just about, uh, belt
- 6:26and suspenders approach. Thanks
- 6:29for joining me on 4Q. Don't forget
- 6:32to subscribe, share and stay hungry for knowledge that
- 6:35is. This podcast has been
- 6:38researched and written by me, Dr. Terri
- 6:40Simpson. And while I am a physician, I am not your
- 6:43physician. Before making any changes, especially
- 6:46when on, um, the GLP1 drug, please check with your
- 6:49physician and a registered dietitian.
- 6:52Not with a chiropractor, not with an eastern trained
- 6:54physician. We were distributed by our friends at
- 6:57Simpler media and the Pod God. My good friend,
- 7:00Mr. Evo Terre
- 7:02until next week. Thanks for listening, thanks for
- 7:05subscribing, and thanks for saying the kind words on all
- 7:08of those different places. You'll find me in my podcast.
- 7:11Until then, have a Good week. I'm Dr.
- 7:14Simpson. Goodbye,
- 7:20de Evo.
- 7:22I discovered overnight oats with
- 7:25a little bit of apple sauce or apple
- 7:27juice added to it. It's
- 7:30delicious. You ought to give it a try sometime.
- 7:34I am on board the overnight Oats
- 7:37Ch train. Um, but I hadn't considered putting other
- 7:40stuff into it. Experimentation
- 7:43shall ensue.
