- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for April 6, 2026 Hidden Rooms and Locked Doors A Guide
- 0:06to Total Transparency This week's topic is having a no-closed-doors marriage.
- 0:12If you and your spouse both get on board with this idea, some powerful things will happen.
- 0:16But this is not for the faint of heart, and it's a bad idea for a marriage currently
- 0:20struggling or if there is any abuse.
- 0:23When you got married, you were a mansion full of rooms, hundreds of rooms.
- 0:27Your spouse had already been in some of these rooms, and was invited into more
- 0:31of them after you married.
- 0:32But unless you were unusually emotionally healthy and very self-aware,
- 0:36many doors were locked and some were hidden.
- 0:39Our feelings are personal, and we rightly protect them. Giving someone free
- 0:43access to some rooms means they can hurt you deeply.
- 0:46The same is true for our hopes and dreams, as well as our thoughts and beliefs.
- 0:51Most of us have rooms that have never been seen by another person.
- 0:54If you got deeply hurt, you may have locked that room. If it was really bad,
- 0:59you may have walled up a whole section of rooms never to be seen again.
- 1:02As I said, there is good reason to protect some of these rooms.
- 1:06Even with your spouse, it takes time to know it's safe. and to feel okay about
- 1:10letting them into a room that contains painful memories, personal feelings, or private thoughts.
- 1:15But the light of day is what brings healing.
- 1:17It takes time to move to a no-locked-doors marriage. It will take years or even decades.
- 1:23But the closer you get to that goal, the better your marriage will be.
- 1:27And not just your marriage, your life in general will be better.
- 1:30If this idea appeals to you more than it scares you, have a talk about it with
- 1:34your spouse. Are both of you prepared to unlock doors that remain closed for years or decades?
- 1:40If you decide to go for it, start with a lot of grace. Talk about the fact that it will take time.
- 1:45Discuss that much of your resistance will not be about your spouse.
- 1:49See steady progress as a good thing and celebrate growth. This is Paul,
- 1:54and doing marriage well is easier with fewer locked doors.
