Latest / The Aligned Actor / Let's Practice Mindfulness!
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hello, friends.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: I've decided to add a new element to the Aligned Actor pod tube stack.
- 0:06We're going to be practicing mindfulness together on a fairly
- 0:09regular basis because
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: mindfulness is a huge foundation of my work.
- 0:14I'm a mindfulness and mindset coach,
- 0:16after all,
- 0:17and mindfulness is the first part of that.
- 0:20And one of my missions with my business is to demystify
- 0:24mindfulness and make
- 0:25engaging in a regular mindfulness practice as accessible and
- 0:31easy as possible for
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: people.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Mindfulness is incredibly simple when you boil it down.
- 0:38It's a special way of paying attention to the present moment
- 0:41with curiosity instead of judgment.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Typically, we focus on our breath and then just notice
- 0:50whatever we notice within ourselves and around us so the
- 0:55physical sensation of
- 0:56breathing the thoughts that are present in the mind the
- 1:01emotions that you might be
- 1:02feeling within you the noise of that airplane going overhead
- 1:07and as you're
- 1:08witnessing what's present within you and around you one of
- 1:12those things might
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: decide to take center stage of your mind look at me look at me
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Jazz hands!
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: And suddenly you're watching some solo show.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Sholo show.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: You're watching a solo show.
- 1:31Rehashing something from your past or forecasting off into your
- 1:36future or,
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: I don't know,
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: imagining what it would be like to win an Oscar.
- 1:43The point is that you're no longer observing the present
- 1:45moment,
- 1:47but that's no big deal.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Cause when that happens and that happens to all of us,
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: you just kindly and gently guide your focus back to your breath.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: It's no big deal.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Oh yes.
- 2:01I should definitely remember to thank all those folks in my
- 2:03acceptance speech,
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: but right now I'm going to lovingly guide my focus back to my breath,
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: back to my experience of the present moment.
- 2:15no need to curse yourself out there's no need to berate your
- 2:19wandering mind just
- 2:21let the orchestra play you off as you return your focus to the
- 2:26present moment it's
- 2:28simple it's gentle rinse and repeat as many times as needed
- 2:34during a mindfulness
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: session so let's go ahead and practice together now
- 2:40If you're driving or doing something that requires your full
- 2:44attention in order for
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: you and others around you to be safe,
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: please come back to this portion of the pod tube cast at a later time.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: But if you're able to practice with us now, let's go ahead and settle in.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: So find a comfortable position for your body.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: You could be seated.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: You could be standing.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: You can have your eyes open or closed, it doesn't really matter.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Just start to tune in to the sensation of your breath.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Noticing the inhales and the exhales.
- 3:41Maybe even intentionally slowing down your exhale so that you
- 3:47can allow your heart
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: rate to come down a little bit.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: And as you focus on your breath,
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: go ahead and take notice of whatever your body is in contact with.
- 4:23So for me,
- 4:24I'm sitting in a chair and I'm noticing the contact between my
- 4:30body and that chair.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: If you're standing,
- 4:45Notice the contact between your feet and the floor or ground
- 4:50beneath you.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: And just let your body relax as much as possible.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: into whatever surface is supporting you.
- 5:20Even if you're standing,
- 5:22let yourself feel grounded and supported by the ground beneath
- 5:27you.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Continuing to focus on your breath.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Allowing your breath to relax your body.
- 5:44noticing the sensation of the inhales and the exhales,
- 5:52and then seeing what else you notice.
- 5:59Maybe there are thoughts that you can just let pass by like
- 6:03clouds in the sky.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: Maybe there's an emotion present within you.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: That again, you can just observe without attaching to.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: Maybe there are sounds in the environment around you.
- 6:28And again,
- 6:30you can just mindfully observe with curiosity instead of
- 6:36judgment.
- 6:47And if any of these things that you're observing within you or
- 6:51around you decides
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: to take center stage of your mind,
- 6:58present a little show for you that completely takes you out of
- 7:02the present moment,
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: that's okay.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: You can just acknowledge that.
- 7:16Gently choose to return your focus to your breath and to the
- 7:23present moment.
- 7:30And we just keep practicing in this way all throughout the
- 7:36mindfulness session.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: Staying with the breath.
- 7:48noticing what we notice if we notice that the mind completely
- 7:58wanders away off into
- 8:01the past rummaging around or sailing away into the future
- 8:10anticipating things just
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: gently
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: Very kindly bring your focus back to your breath.
- 8:24Your breath is like a loving friend,
- 8:27always ready to welcome you back to the present moment.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: Now we're going to bring this mindfulness session to a close.
- 9:00I invite you to just find some gentle movement that your body
- 9:06might enjoy right now.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: And then whenever you're ready, you can open your eyes.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Welcome back.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: And now,
- 9:25as we're all sort of enjoying the afterglow of that little
- 9:30mindfulness session,
- 9:32I want us all to remember that there are so many great benefits
- 9:36of mindfulness for
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: both humans in general and actors specifically.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Practicing mindfulness,
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: tuning into your breath,
- 9:46observing the present moment with curiosity instead of judgment
- 9:50can really help you
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: relax and relieve stress from your mind and body.
- 9:55I know I feel infinitely more relaxed after having guided us
- 9:59through that session.
- 9:59It can calm your nerves before a big scene that you might be
- 10:04doing for an audition
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: or you're about to be called or invited to set.
- 10:11It can help you stay more present in your work,
- 10:14both in auditions and on set.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: You're really staying there with your scene partner,
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: really listening and reacting moment to moment.
- 10:21It can help you get out of your head in auditions and stay
- 10:25focused on what your
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: character wants and those specifics in that scene.
- 10:29It can help you notice when your inner critic is being really
- 10:34mean to you and driving you nuts.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: And then you can start to practice, oh wait,
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to engage with that.
- 10:43I'm going to gently and kindly come to my breath and be a
- 10:47little bit kinder to
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: myself and practice kindness towards myself.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: It can help you become less judgmental of yourself and others generally.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: And it can also help you start to question,
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: gently question,
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: if some of your dominant thoughts,
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: some of your mindset
- 11:10the way that you're approaching things in your career or in
- 11:13your life in general,
- 11:14if any of that might actually be limiting beliefs that are
- 11:18holding you back.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: All this and so much more.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: A regular mindfulness practice, even just 10 minutes a day.
- 11:28I always start my day with 10 minutes of mindfulness and it
- 11:31really helps set the
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: tone for my day.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: These benefits then, as we practice more and more,
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: These benefits become more accessible to us.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: I always like to say that the benefits of mindfulness are cumulative.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: So the more you practice,
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: the benefits like compound on each other,
- 11:50like the practice kind of snowballs and you get better and
- 11:53better at all of this.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: And it's a really great thing for humans, for actors, for everybody.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Actors are humans too.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Newsflash.
- 12:05You find it easier and easier to do all of these things that
- 12:08I've mentioned.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: And you reap more and more benefits of mindfulness.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, that's why we're here to do it.
- 12:15That's why I wanted us to be practicing together because it
- 12:18just takes practice.
- 12:19You just have to keep showing up and doing it and trying it
- 12:21again and again and again and again.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: And that's why I decided that we're going to do this more.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: And that's why we're here to practice together.
- 12:33And I even have a very special mindfulness meditation that I
- 12:37created for you as an
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: actor,
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: specifically for actors.
- 12:42Unless you also,
- 12:43as a non-actor,
- 12:44get auditions for things,
- 12:45but I doubt that.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Maybe it would work for something else.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: But I have a pre-audition focusing meditation.
- 12:53It's a free meditation that's going to help you get out of your
- 12:56head and into your
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: character so that you can rock your next audition.
- 13:00And it's going to help you calm your nerves,
- 13:02let go of any distracting thoughts.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Like how many of us spend most of our time with our audition being like,
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: yeah,
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: but what does casting want?
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: How could I book this so I can make my insurance?
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Like,
- 13:13we're going to let go of that stuff that we don't really have
- 13:17control over and
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: instead bring our focus back to what our character wants,
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: what's going on in the scene,
- 13:23so that then we can present our best work to casting and to
- 13:27production and be ready
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: to rock and roll in that way.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: So I have links where you can get that in the show notes,
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: in the Substack post notes,
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: in the YouTube video description.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: It's everywhere.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: You can go and find it.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: It's also on my website, thealignedactor.com.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: And if you want to transform your actor mindset in general,
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: if you want help with mindfulness,
- 13:52and then also start to look for maybe the limiting beliefs that
- 13:56your mind is
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: putting in your way,
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: or you want help with quieting your inner critic a bunch more,
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: I'm ready to help you with that.
- 14:05And I offer a complimentary session and rest assured,
- 14:07this is not a sales call.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: I am not Alec Baldwin and Glen Gary, Glen Ross.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: In my world, ABC means always be celebrating.
- 14:16So we'll probably do a lot of celebrating of you during that
- 14:19session,
- 14:20during that free session.
- 14:21It's really just a chance for us to connect and for you to walk
- 14:24away with some
- 14:25specific actionable ideas that you can start applying right
- 14:29away to start shifting
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: gently your mindset
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: and strengthening that mindset overall.
- 14:38You can even maybe think of it like an audition where you're
- 14:42the production team.
- 14:44And so I come in to audition for you and I show you what I do
- 14:48in the role of coach
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: by actually coaching you.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: And then we leave each other and you get to decide,
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: hmm,
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: does my production need a mindfulness and mindset coach right now?
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: That's question one.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: And then question two is, is Amy the right person for that role?
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Maybe I am, maybe I'm not.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: We just kind of see where we go from there.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Sounds kind of fun, right?
- 15:14So you can get that complimentary session by going to my
- 15:17website,
- 15:17thealignedactor.com.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: There are also links everywhere you would expect to find links.
- 15:23There's a little form for you to fill out that asks you some
- 15:26very basic questions.
- 15:28And then I send you an email so that you can get on my calendar
- 15:32and we rock and roll from there.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: So we're gonna have a lot of fun doing that.
- 15:36And then the third thing I wanna tell you about is that if you
- 15:40are stressed,
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: you should be practicing more mindfulness,
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: first of all,
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: which is really gonna help.
- 15:47And then also I have an ebook of even more mindful tools and
- 15:53life hacks that I use
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: all the time when I'm stressed out.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: And it doesn't require that you like sit in meditation for a while,
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: although I have some bonus meditations as a part of that ebook.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: But the book itself,
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Accessing Calm,
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: is super simple mindfulness life hacks that I use every day.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: These are tools that help me release tension from my body.
- 16:16They help keep my mind from spinning out of control with
- 16:19frustration and worry.
- 16:20They help me during the morning rush when I'm trying to get my
- 16:23kid off to school.
- 16:24They help me calm down before a big audition and get present
- 16:28there without having
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: to do like a big formal sit down mindfulness meditation.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: And they help me deal with the stress of the world overall.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: And the world is mighty stressful right now, folks.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: It's a really quick read.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: And it has video demonstrations of all the tools.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: And like I said, there are also some regular length.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: I think they're like,
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: they range between five and 15 minutes,
- 16:54let's say mindfulness meditations that you can also use as a
- 16:58part of that.
- 16:59It's all just $7 and you can go pick up a copy for yourself on
- 17:03my website and all
- 17:05the links are everywhere you'd expect to find links as you are
- 17:09probably getting
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: used to by now.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: So that's a good time too for you to go get that.
- 17:15uh and then finally i have some upcoming workshops on
- 17:18mindfulness coming up in
- 17:20october and november specifically and exclusively for members
- 17:24of the sag-aftra los
- 17:26angeles conservatory so you have to be a member of sag-aftra
- 17:30the union and you have
- 17:32to join the los angeles conservatory which costs 45 a year and
- 17:37then you get access
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: to all kinds of continuing development
- 17:41uh classes for actors i think there's like acting classes and
- 17:44businessy type
- 17:45classes and there's like a producing class and there's just a
- 17:48ton of stuff but the
- 17:49stuff that i teach the workshop that i'm teaching in october
- 17:53and november is
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: mindfulness 101 empower your craft and your career with your presence
- 18:00You can come learn about mindfulness and the many advantages it
- 18:03offers performers,
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: experience a guided mindfulness meditation,
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: much like we did today,
- 18:08and explore the benefits of developing a daily mindfulness
- 18:13practice and learn some
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: quick centering tools to use in auditions and on set.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: It's a really fun time.
- 18:20I have taught this a few times at SAG-AFTRA LA Conservatory and
- 18:25people seem to
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: really like it and I'm excited to bring it back there again.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: So again,
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: if you're a member of the SAG-AFTRA Los Angeles Conservatory,
- 18:32you can head to the calendar on their website and sign up and
- 18:36find the workshop
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: there.
- 18:38You can't always find it just because I think it has to be
- 18:42within two weeks before
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: it's released.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: So I think the October one would probably be ready.
- 18:47And the November one wouldn't be on the calendar quite yet,
- 18:51but keep an eye out for it.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: And if you're not a member,
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: I encourage you to join because like I said,
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: it's $45 for a full year of workshops and classes for actors.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: It's good stuff.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: All right, that's what I have for you today.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Take care, folks.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Be practicing mindfulness,
- 19:07and we're going to practice a lot more mindfulness on the Align
- 19:10Doctor Podstube
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: stack.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: Nope, that's not how you say it.
- 19:15We're going to practice more mindfulness on the Align Doctor
- 19:18Podstube stack in the future.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: Take care.
