- 0:34podcast. Hello and welcome to the Eat
- 0:40more carbs podcast, the official podcast of the performance
- 0:43feeling club. I'm Jenna Fischer and I'm here
- 0:45with my Co host Riley Beatty. Today we are going to be playing
- 0:48Betsy Flint's in review with Riley.
- 0:49If you don't know, Betsy is part of Team USA volleyball.
- 0:52During this episode, Betsy shares all about fueling and
- 0:56navigating fueling as a professional athlete and as a
- 0:58mom if you're living any. More Carbs podcast.
- 1:00This is your reminder to make sure that you're sharing with
- 1:02your friends and fellow athletes and also rating and reviewing
- 1:05our podcast below. It really helps out our small
- 1:08business. Riley, what's your high in low
- 1:09my? High and my low are a little bit
- 1:12of the same. Anybody who has been following
- 1:14the Emor Carbs podcast for a long period of time, you also
- 1:17know that we have video available.
- 1:20And for the past, let's say year and a half, I have looked like a
- 1:23zombie on the podcast recordings because my camera was so bad.
- 1:28And I have recently upgraded my camera.
- 1:30And I just wanted to share that I no longer look like I am at
- 1:34the target check out counter and I look no longer like a zombie.
- 1:38And I think Jenna is thankful because now she does not have to
- 1:40look at me like I am in a cloud. All of the time.
- 1:43It's not that you ever looked bad, it's that the video that
- 1:47the system that we used paired with your camera just was not a
- 1:51compatible situation. So you look a lot more colorful
- 1:55in your your new camera. Honestly, some of my clients
- 1:59have not recognize me because of my new setup, so we have.
- 2:03Upgraded I'm very happy that you have an upgrade and that
- 2:06everything is more vibrant in your new webcam.
- 2:09I literally. Not look orange instead of
- 2:11white, but it's OK I. Don't know, I would take the tan
- 2:14over the Casper color. What about your high and low?
- 2:17So my high, when I was marathon training, I wasn't doing a lot
- 2:20of other activity. It just didn't have time for it.
- 2:23I needed to dedicate a lot of time to running.
- 2:25Now that I'm not running as much, I'm getting back into some
- 2:28of the other types of exercise that I really love of.
- 2:30One of those things is spin. I've probably talked about it
- 2:32multiple times on the podcast before, but I love going to spin
- 2:35class. There's a spin instructor at my
- 2:36gym who's just so fun, but it's just a fun and different way to
- 2:40like move my body that I've just been really loving these past
- 2:42couple of days. Milo is related to the weather,
- 2:45truthfully, but my best friend from college is getting married.
- 2:48I am so, so excited for her. She has spent so long designing
- 2:51her wedding invitations and I could not wait to see them.
- 2:54Like I knew they were gonna be beautiful.
- 2:55Like she is putting all the thought into all the details.
- 2:58So I couldn't wait to see it, unfortunately.
- 3:00Unfortunately it's 113° here. So I pulled out the beautiful
- 3:05the invitation, so excited to look at it.
- 3:07And they had put like a wax seal for their new initials together
- 3:11on the inside of the card. And because it's 113°.
- 3:15It. Melted so the entire card
- 3:20covered in waxy shenanigans and I had to rip it to get it open
- 3:25because of the wax. But anyway, sorry Taylor, it's
- 3:28still a beautiful invitation. I didn't mean to rip it.
- 3:30I'm sure the rest of the wedding will be beautiful too.
- 3:32I just can't believe that's how hot it gets.
- 3:34Like, that's like just a big sign of like how warm it is
- 3:37outside. Yeah, it's crazy.
- 3:39We hope you enjoy this rerun of Betsy's episode where she talks
- 3:42all about feeling. There's plenty of great
- 3:44information about feeling and properly as an athlete, no
- 3:47matter what level you're at. In this episode, I have on Team
- 3:50USA and Olympic hopeful Betsy Flint.
- 3:53Betsy is part of the beach volleyball Team USA and she is a
- 3:58freaking rock star on and off the court.
- 4:01Betsy's currently a mom to a 2 year old named Cora and she
- 4:06shares in this episode how she balances being a mom and being a
- 4:09professional athlete. She's going to share a little
- 4:12bit about her nutrition journey. I am so excited that Betsy's on
- 4:15today and that she's going to be sharing her knowledge with you.
- 4:19So this is going to be such a valuable episode for those young
- 4:22athletes and for actually athletes of all ages.
- 4:25You're going to learn so much today from Betsy.
- 4:27So let's jump in and get started.
- 4:28Hey, Betsy, welcome to the podcast.
- 4:30Thanks for having me. I'm so excited that you're here.
- 4:33I know we've met like once in person, but I've been following
- 4:36along with your journey on social and I like feel like I
- 4:39know everything about you. Like I feel like we're friends.
- 4:41So I'm super excited to chat about a bunch of the stuff
- 4:44today. Agreed.
- 4:45Me too. Why don't you go ahead and share
- 4:48with all the athletes listening a little bit about yourself, a
- 4:51little bit about your athletic journey.
- 4:54Yeah, I play beach volleyball professionally for Team USA and
- 4:58on the AVP Pro Beach Tour. I went to school at LMUI, was
- 5:03recruited for indoor and beach became an emerging sport my
- 5:07sophomore year. And I played beach growing up
- 5:10and I that was kind of like a dream come true for it to become
- 5:13an NCAA sport. Well, it was an emerging sport
- 5:16at that time. So started that my sophomore
- 5:19year, which was incredible and obviously been playing
- 5:22professionally since I graduated in 2015.
- 5:25And now I have a 2 year old daughter and she's obviously a
- 5:30lot of work and it changes how I'm training and just who I am
- 5:36on and off the court and it's been incredible.
- 5:38I love her like fueling Gurney. I know we like chatted a little
- 5:43bit about this like on Instagram, but I feel like she's
- 5:45going to be a sports dietitian when she grows up.
- 5:48She's amazing. I see her eating like
- 5:50cauliflower and like doing like pre and post fueling with you.
- 5:55Oh yeah, I hope she is too. It was kind of my dream.
- 5:57I want to be a dietitian going into school, and so I kind of
- 6:01want the Health and Human science route since we didn't
- 6:04have it at LMU. And now my journey's changed and
- 6:08I don't see that happening. But I'm really interested and I
- 6:11love the topic. And yeah, I love like, making
- 6:14smoothies with Cora and just teaching her fun things that,
- 6:18you know, food is fun, and hopefully giving her big variety
- 6:22so she can have all sorts of things like foods that are maybe
- 6:25not even good for you and lots of food that are.
- 6:27So that's been fun. I love that.
- 6:30I think it was like on Halloween she like tried candy for the
- 6:33first time maybe or something. She did she, she was like, oh, a
- 6:36lollipop. Like this is what it is.
- 6:38And now she loves lollipops. So I'm like, maybe we shouldn't
- 6:41have started that. Not so early, no.
- 6:44I love that. Hey, all foods fit right?
- 6:46Yes. For sure for.
- 6:48People who are maybe not super familiar with beach, growing up
- 6:51in North Carolina, we like just saw it on the Olympics, but it's
- 6:54like a big thing in Southern California.
- 6:57Maybe share a little bit about like how is like beach and
- 7:01indoor different for people who are not familiar?
- 7:04Yeah, Beach is 2 on two and indoors 6 on 6.
- 7:08So it's, I'd say a lot more work.
- 7:11You're touching every single ball, so there's no plays off.
- 7:14And for Beach, we're playing probably two or three matches a
- 7:18day. It can vary maybe from 1:00 to
- 7:214:00. Hopefully you're not playing
- 7:22five, but I've done it and indoor you're really just
- 7:26playing one like really long match a day.
- 7:29Typically. Those are kind of the
- 7:31differences and it's huge here in Southern California and the
- 7:35Olympics is the goal for me and that we're starting
- 7:38qualification this year. So I'm really excited to get
- 7:40that going. And obviously feelings a huge
- 7:43part of that. And I'm still still learning.
- 7:45There's always things that I can improve and I'm I've been
- 7:48thinking about it today, like even prepping for this podcast,
- 7:51I'm like, man, I can be doing things better.
- 7:53So thanks for having me because you're making me a better
- 7:56athlete. You do such an amazing job and I
- 8:00know that you're working with like Brooke right now, who was
- 8:03on the podcast earlier, who's amazing.
- 8:05I feel like I see you doing a lot of smoothies and with Brooke
- 8:08too. She does a lot of smoothies.
- 8:10Do you have like a favorite smoothie that you like to fuel
- 8:12with or? Whatever Brooke makes is
- 8:15awesome. I'm not kidding.
- 8:17It makes my day anytime there's a smoothie in the fridge.
- 8:21She's only in twice a week with us and I want her in more.
- 8:24But that's a great one for pre workout cuz usually I'm coming
- 8:28from the sand to the gym and so getting something I don't always
- 8:33have time to get a full meal in. So the the smoothie is a great
- 8:37energy source and it has you know protein, carbs and fats in
- 8:40there to keep me going for my lift.
- 8:42So that's awesome. That's my favorite one.
- 8:46Maybe she'll start shipping to the South Carolina.
- 8:48Yeah, yeah, or yeah. If she could travel with me
- 8:52everywhere and just walk around with smoothies, that'd be
- 8:54amazing. Yeah, I love that personal, like
- 8:58smoothie chef. I love it.
- 8:59Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:01So you talked a little bit about, you know, you have, it
- 9:03sounds like you have beach training, so you do like sand
- 9:06work and then you go into the weight room.
- 9:08What does like a typical day usually look like for you?
- 9:11Yeah. So we usually do beach training
- 9:13in the morning. Sometimes it's 730 starts.
- 9:15That means I'm on the sand between sometime between 7:00
- 9:18and 7:15 warming up. And then after that we trained
- 9:24for two hours and then I go straight to the gym.
- 9:26So like a 3045 minute break and then I'm lifting for an hour,
- 9:31hour and a half, conditioning and then some sort of recovery
- 9:35like Norma tech or sauna. So I've definitely learned to
- 9:39like train my stomach to eat a good breakfast because that's
- 9:42really important for me, especially like for tournaments,
- 9:46because tournaments we end up playing a few matches a day and
- 9:49sometimes they're like an hour or two apart.
- 9:51So it's hard for me to get something in my stomach.
- 9:55So I've been trying to like get a better like a bigger
- 9:58breakfast. So right now I'm eating a couple
- 10:01eggs with a bagel or toast some sort of.
- 10:06I'm trying to get the eggs in to get more protein but sometimes
- 10:09I'm just not feeling it. So I've done some overnight oats
- 10:12or oatmeal but I've definitely noticed if I just do the oatmeal
- 10:16like I'm getting hungry and practice so I bring something to
- 10:19have but that's not ideal but sometimes just what you have to
- 10:22do if you have an early game or early practice.
- 10:25OK, I have to ask. So are we?
- 10:28Do you eat during practice? Like the sand?
- 10:29Like what? Like I.
- 10:32Not usually, Not usually. OK, sometimes if Brooke's out
- 10:36there, she'll bring us some cuties.
- 10:39And I know, and I can stomach those.
- 10:42But I've learned, like, I don't usually like to consume things
- 10:45unless I'm like, really like, struggling for energy.
- 10:48My stomach doesn't necessarily like it.
- 10:49Like even the electrolytes I struggle with, like during
- 10:53competition or during practice. So I've been trying to do that
- 10:56like the night before or at least an hour before practice.
- 11:00And obviously I've learned by trial and error.
- 11:03So yeah, I don't usually eat something during practice, but
- 11:05that's why I really want a Big Breakfast just to hold me
- 11:08through that. And then right after I have a
- 11:11macro bar, go macro shout out. They're my sponsor.
- 11:14They're awesome. I do have a discount, so if
- 11:16you're listening, it's Betsy, you get like 15% off, so.
- 11:20I'll make sure to link it below. So if you don't link it below,
- 11:23yeah, go Macro bars are great. What's your favorite flavor?
- 11:28Right now it's dark chocolate, almonds, but anything peanut
- 11:31butter is great. And Cora loves them too.
- 11:34She steals them anytime I open them up and I'm like, I wanted
- 11:38it. Like I try to give her a bite of
- 11:40it and she wants the bigger half.
- 11:41She doesn't want the small half. So yeah, it's good.
- 11:44But I love them because they have they have protein, they
- 11:46have carbs and they have fats. And so it's good like right
- 11:50after. And I think you've said too,
- 11:51like they're really good snack for later in the afternoons for
- 11:55athletes. So I use them all the time.
- 11:57I like them too, because like, especially with traveling and
- 12:00we'll talk a little bit more about like AVP and qualifying,
- 12:02but sometimes bars are really great energy sources because
- 12:05they're not like a lot of volume.
- 12:07And especially if you're somebody who I don't know, maybe
- 12:09like yourself, who like struggles with eating around
- 12:13like competition or training or just getting in enough fuel.
- 12:15I I like I really like bars for that type of purpose.
- 12:18Yeah, I love them. Paris 2024 is the goal, right?
- 12:22You have AVP in a couple of months.
- 12:25For somebody who's not super familiar, what's maybe the
- 12:28difference? What does qualifying look like?
- 12:30What is like an AVP season look like?
- 12:32Yeah, so they're intertwined. The AVP and FIVB is the
- 12:35international one. And to qualify for the Olympics,
- 12:39it's your best 12 finishes in the International like FIVPS.
- 12:43OK. So and it starts from January
- 12:461st until like June of 2024. So it's a year and a half to get
- 12:5112 plus finishes in and then you have to qualify based on your
- 12:55ranking and only two US teams get to go.
- 12:59So we will typically have like 3, maybe four in the top 15 in
- 13:05the world, but only two teams get to go.
- 13:07So it's really a battle obviously against international
- 13:10teams, but against each other too.
- 13:11And then there's AV PS within there, which is awesome to play
- 13:15in front of like, you know, the US and in front of friends and
- 13:18family around the US. And it's a great for us to make
- 13:22money and, you know, highlight sponsors.
- 13:24So we do a mix of those. That's so exciting.
- 13:28Like it's all coming like very soon.
- 13:31Oh yeah, we start. Our first tournament is around
- 13:34Saint Patrick's Day weekend, We're playing AVP Miami, and
- 13:37then we go straight to Mexico for an international event and
- 13:41then it just starts. I feel like every couple weeks
- 13:44we're either on the road or doing something.
- 13:47Unfortunately, our two home tournaments in Hermosa in
- 13:51Manhattan are conflicting with international tournaments, so
- 13:55it's kind of a bummer. I think we might be missing
- 13:57those, so we'll be travelling a ton this year.
- 14:01Wow. Do you find that travelling?
- 14:04Like, do you feel like that complicates feeling?
- 14:06Do you feel like you've kind of practice?
- 14:08You talked about practicing breakfast.
- 14:09I don't know if you've practiced a lot of, you know, travel
- 14:12fuelling, but how, how do you navigate that?
- 14:15Yeah, it's different everywhere you go, but I like to bring a
- 14:18lot of snacks and that's been something to rely on.
- 14:23Lots of bars, lots of oatmeal, protein powder because you don't
- 14:28know they give you meals, but there's certain times for them
- 14:31so they don't always fit in the schedule you want.
- 14:34And then learning like where you are, like Italy is awesome, but
- 14:37there's so many carbs, which is great, but not a lot of protein.
- 14:42And so then that we found we had a 10 day tournament there and
- 14:46we're there a few days early and we just felt lethargic because
- 14:52we weren't eating enough proteins.
- 14:53So then we were able to change and, you know, get our protein
- 14:56shakes in right after practice and, you know, trying to find
- 14:59some sort of extra protein in there somewhere.
- 15:01So there's always challenges, but we usually pack a lot of
- 15:05things and it feels a little high maintenance, but it's
- 15:08great. It's good to have everything,
- 15:10especially you never know if you get sick or something like that.
- 15:14You want the oatmeal. You want things you know to
- 15:17settle your stomach. Yeah, especially when you're,
- 15:20like, traveling so much too, and you're on, I don't know, in like
- 15:24so many different cities, like eating out constantly.
- 15:27I found, like, you can just get sluggish from it.
- 15:29You can get lethargic and sometimes too, like you're just
- 15:32like, I just want the oatmeal. Like, I want it Like, I want
- 15:35what works. Like I know what works because I
- 15:37want to practice that on the road.
- 15:39And we always bring some sort of dessert, some sort of chocolate.
- 15:44I love that. Yes, I don't eat dairy so it's
- 15:47sometimes hard to find good desserts that are dairy free so
- 15:51I always bring my own, make sure I have something every day
- 15:53because it makes me happy. I love that.
- 15:55So that's I was going to ask like, what are you putting in
- 15:58your bag? You said protein powder.
- 15:59It sounds like chocolate. You have oatmeal.
- 16:01Anything else that's like a must in your travel bag?
- 16:04Macro bars of course. Trail mix, nut butter to put in
- 16:08the oatmeal. Good for PB and JS.
- 16:11Yeah. And sometimes this is a little
- 16:13hint. You can make a little breakfast,
- 16:15some sort of sandwich at breakfast.
- 16:17Especially in Europe, they have all the deli meats and all the
- 16:21good breads. So we would, in the past we've
- 16:24made sandwiches and we put them in our fridge and we eat them
- 16:27later on. And then you get to save money
- 16:29and it's easy and great feel. I'm a big sandwich.
- 16:33I'm like a big sandwich like proponent.
- 16:35Like I'm a sandwich fan. I think they're super underrated
- 16:38when they come to like as a source of fueling.
- 16:40Like I think a lot of people are like it's not proper fueling or
- 16:43they don't think about it, but a sandwich is great.
- 16:45Yeah, I did post about it and one of the international girls
- 16:49told me it's not really allowed to take things from the
- 16:51breakfast bar. So now I don't post about it,
- 16:53but I still do it. I won't tell anybody.
- 16:57No, it's fine. It's fine.
- 16:58Obviously feeling when you're traveling can be, can be
- 17:00challenging. Do you find that you struggle
- 17:03maybe eating enough when you're playing, you know, 3-4, cross
- 17:07your fingers, hopefully not five games in a day.
- 17:09I just feel like that has to be challenging.
- 17:12It is especially in like really warm weather places, it's harder
- 17:15for me to stomach things. But the PB and J has been a go
- 17:19to because AVP provides like some sort of spread.
- 17:22They have real food, but they also go to Costco and get some
- 17:25things and so that's been great. Just right after the match
- 17:28getting APB and J some sort of protein in if I can, depending
- 17:32on if we're playing soon after. I've learned that even if I play
- 17:36a match and then I know I'm going to eat dinner, but I like
- 17:39it worked on, then I kind of get like light headed and just don't
- 17:42feel good because I used to not want to spoil my dinner but now
- 17:45it's like I've got to get something in my stomach just as
- 17:48you know, get fuel in and then usually eat a really big dinner.
- 17:53But then again, the breakfast is a priority.
- 17:55And then finding ways to snack and have bars and PB and JS in
- 17:59between matches. It's been huge.
- 18:01Yeah, I love that. I was definitely, I mean, I was
- 18:04never at the level that you were at, but when I was playing in
- 18:06college, I really struggled like fueling, like any time it was
- 18:10hot, like any time it was hot or humid, I was like, like eating a
- 18:15thing of chicken, broccoli and rice, like sounds like awful.
- 18:18So I love that like having a good breakfast, like having that
- 18:21good feeling foundation and then kind of just like topping off
- 18:24your fuel store, like in between, in between matches.
- 18:27Yes, for sure. How are you like hydrating?
- 18:30Like, how can you drink enough water?
- 18:31I Yeah, More I. I drink a lot of water, always
- 18:35cool. It's not been a huge problem.
- 18:38But electrolytes, especially when it's really warm and around
- 18:42matches, I'll do them the night before and or an hour before
- 18:46just so it settles in and I'm not consuming it during the
- 18:50match. And I've knock on wood, never
- 18:52really had a problem with cramping or anything.
- 18:54I just want to make sure, you know, I'm optimizing my
- 18:57performance, so getting those in is important.
- 19:00And I think I told you I was like really sick and Fort
- 19:04Lauderdale playing and I had these sores in my mouth and I
- 19:08couldn't consume salt. Like it just burned so bad.
- 19:12And I surprisingly didn't cramp. I don't know if you can have
- 19:15backup salt in your body or something, but I don't know how
- 19:19I made it through that tournament.
- 19:21Yeah, I remember us talking about you were like, I didn't
- 19:24have any electrolytes. I haven't had any salt.
- 19:27Yep, but something I was eating was helping and.
- 19:30It sounds like you've like you have a really good feeling
- 19:32foundation and you've been able to like simplify it and like
- 19:35also make it fun, which I love. So I have to ask if you wouldn't
- 19:39mind sharing a lot of, I think there's been a lot of press,
- 19:42especially over the last couple of years about, you know, beach
- 19:45players and like body image and like being confident, you know,
- 19:49having to play in a swimsuit. I would love to hear.
- 19:52I don't know if this has ever affected you or if you have like
- 19:54words you know of wisdom for younger players you might be
- 19:57struggling with this right now. Yeah, it's definitely a
- 20:00challenging sport with us being in swimsuits all the time.
- 20:04There are times where maybe I'm not feeling, you know, highly
- 20:08confident in myself. And for one, we don't have to
- 20:10wear swimsuits. It's mostly what people wear.
- 20:13But you can wear, you know, shorts, tank tops, whatever
- 20:16you're comfortable in. And that kind of recently
- 20:20changed in the international world.
- 20:22Before, you had to have like a doctor's note.
- 20:24Or. You had to be exactly matching
- 20:27with your partner. And now as long as you're like
- 20:30kind of matching, you can wear, you know, shorts or pants, tank
- 20:33tops. So that's awesome.
- 20:34So now we have more of a choice. Yeah.
- 20:37But yeah, it's it's hard. I've gone through ups and downs
- 20:40with it. And I've definitely come to.
- 20:43I'm in a better spot where like I'm thinking more about my
- 20:45performance and I would rather perform well at my best.
- 20:49And obviously when then I would look good, you know, like, and
- 20:55it's just hard when there's photographers and there's you're
- 20:58going to be in positions where even like the skinniest people
- 21:01aren't going to look flattering in these photos.
- 21:03And we just have to accept that. But it's really hard.
- 21:08And I'm definitely more confident in it now and
- 21:10especially having a baby. I'm like two years ago, I was
- 21:14growing a human and now I'm qualifying for the Olympics.
- 21:17And that's pretty badass. So.
- 21:19And I think a lot of women have to appreciate that, that our
- 21:22bodies go through different changes every month.
- 21:24And sometimes we're feeling bloated and not feeling so good
- 21:27maybe because of our period. But that's just part of being a
- 21:30woman. And I think that's why we're so
- 21:32strong mentally, too. So I think it's it's a journey
- 21:35for everyone. It's not just black and white
- 21:37and easy, but it's something that, you know, we'll all work
- 21:41through. Yeah.
- 21:42I'm like, so inspired right now. I was growing a human two years
- 21:46ago and now I'm qualified for the Olympics.
- 21:48Like, that's a pretty badass statement, you're right.
- 21:52Yeah. I think it's easy to forget like
- 21:54amazing things that our body can do for us.
- 21:57Yeah, especially when we're young and we're not thinking
- 21:58about kids and all of that so. We're definitely getting away
- 22:03from it, but at least I think a couple years ago I was having a
- 22:06ton of conversations on like there was always this look that
- 22:10people are trying to get. It doesn't matter if it was
- 22:11beach, it doesn't matter if it's football, basketball.
- 22:13Like everybody was going for a a look where it wasn't necessarily
- 22:18like your performance or anything, but it was like, why
- 22:20don't you have this look? But it sounds like we're moving
- 22:24away from that right now. I hope so, yeah.
- 22:27Fingers. Crossed yes.
- 22:29We gave a little bit of wisdom on the the body image, but what
- 22:32about other, you know, areas or just other suggestions for a
- 22:36young athletes listening? Maybe if it's about fueling, you
- 22:38talked about you kind of have like a breakfast down now you
- 22:41kind of have your practice day routine down.
- 22:44Was it always like that or? No, it takes time to like, just
- 22:49think about me mindful about and practice it like while you're
- 22:52practicing, not just the day of the tournament.
- 22:54Like, oh, what do I need to eat today?
- 22:56Because I have a tournament, but trying to do that over and over
- 22:59again. And I've been in like the macro
- 23:02counting world to where I think it's there's some awareness
- 23:06piece there when you macro count.
- 23:08But I'm the type of person that gets really obsessed over it.
- 23:12Like I would measure out my popcorn and be like Chase, like
- 23:16chase my husband. Like, do you want any popcorn?
- 23:18Be like, no, I'm good. And I'd sit down and he'd eat a
- 23:21bite of my popcorn. I'm like, are you kidding me?
- 23:24Like I just measured that out and now like, I don't know what
- 23:26I'm eating and I want to eat more.
- 23:28And like I would just get so psycho over it.
- 23:30And I was not my best self and I don't think I was even
- 23:33performing at my best doing that.
- 23:35But I learned, you know, like, I definitely need to prioritize
- 23:38protein, things like that. But I think they're like what
- 23:42you're doing with the performance plate is really
- 23:44helpful. So we're eating when we're
- 23:47hungry, like listening to our bodies and then just
- 23:50incorporating, like, the color, the carbs, the protein, and
- 23:53obviously the more color the better.
- 23:55So it's always good to, like, just look at our plate that way.
- 23:58And it's just, I don't know, way more freeing to do that than it
- 24:01is to just count every single thing.
- 24:04So stressful. Yeah.
- 24:06And I've had in the past, just like, strength trainer, like,
- 24:09obsessed over, like, body composition and macro counting.
- 24:14And it just really wasn't good for me.
- 24:17And I had a new strength trainer that came in was like, why are
- 24:20you weighing yourself everyday? I'm like, I don't know, it's
- 24:22just what we did. He's like, stop weighing
- 24:25yourself. Like I don't care what that is.
- 24:26And it was the strongest I've ever been is not thinking about
- 24:30it, just eating what I wanted to eat.
- 24:32And I mean, working hard in the weight room and working hard on
- 24:36the sand. But that's just the best I've
- 24:38ever performed is not stressing over it.
- 24:41Sometimes when we like try to control it too much, it might do
- 24:44more harm than good. Definitely.
- 24:46I mean again, like there's awareness piece, but I did it
- 24:48way too long. I didn't need to do it that
- 24:50long. Yeah.
- 24:53You know, we're, we're a high like a highly successful
- 24:56athlete. We look for like numbers, right.
- 24:59And we want to use data and we want to do whatever we can to
- 25:02get better. And I think sometimes those that
- 25:05that falls into nutrition when there's so many other things
- 25:09that go into nutrition and feeling our body properly, like
- 25:13not just like macros or calories or these numbers like what you
- 25:18talked about where you're like, I bring chocolate like
- 25:21everywhere I'm traveling because like that's part of like proper
- 25:24fueling and that's like sustainable and fun.
- 25:26And it might not be like the perfect calorie or macro number,
- 25:30but it does provide value in our fueling plan.
- 25:33Yes, for sure. So I love what you're doing.
- 25:35And back to, you know, telling a young athlete, I would tell him
- 25:38to look at your Instagram page and just pick, like, a tip or
- 25:41two because everything you say is valuable.
- 25:44And they just have to incorporate, like, one thing
- 25:47maybe a week and see if it improves and if they like it.
- 25:52But yeah, you have a lot of good education.
- 25:54And I think that's a good place for people to start if they
- 25:56don't have like a dietitian to speak to right away.
- 26:00Honor. Thank you.
- 26:01Yeah. Of course.
- 26:03We have to follow, people have to follow you too, like follow
- 26:05your journey and all of the fun stuff that you're doing.
- 26:08So where can people find Neil? I'm on Instagram mainly at Betsy
- 26:12Flint, and I have a website as well that I'll update my
- 26:16schedule on. It's just Betsy flint.com
- 26:18BETSIFLINT. Easy as that.
- 26:22I love that. And then if people wanted to
- 26:24watch you qualify for the Olympics or watch you on AVP,
- 26:27where where can they stream that?
- 26:30Yes, I will always like update you on Instagram.
- 26:33My stories usually AVP is on YouTube and FIVB is on
- 26:39Volleyball World. It's an app and that's usually
- 26:42where you can find me. Awesome.
- 26:44Oh my gosh, I can't wait to follow along.
- 26:48I'm so excited. I always like I always see your
- 26:51stories and I'm like, oh, gotta go to YouTube or like gotta go.
- 26:54I know her so fun. And then I have a couple other
- 26:58questions. I just do like these little
- 27:00outro questions at the end. It's your favorite carb.
- 27:04So what's your favorite carb because it's eat More Carbs
- 27:06podcast? Yes, I love pizza and I eat it
- 27:11every week. You know, you can find.
- 27:13Yeah, you can find joy in those foods and that's, I love pizza.
- 27:18So good. What type of pizza are you?
- 27:20Like what do we put on the pizza?
- 27:22I love the Trader Joe's sauce and we get the dough from there
- 27:26and we do lots of sauce. We do Peppers, some chicken
- 27:31sausage and nutritional yeast because I don't do dairy and I'm
- 27:35not a big fan of the fake cheeses.
- 27:37I just love. So I would love just sauce.
- 27:40Sauce. No cheese.
- 27:42Nutritional yeast gives it a good little flavor, but yeah,
- 27:46I'm happy with no cheese. OK, cool.
- 27:48So you it sounds like. So you make your own.
- 27:50Yeah, Yep. I have to ask, have you ever
- 27:52made air fryer pizza? No, really.
- 27:56Yeah, it's actually super fun. Why is it better?
- 27:59It's just easier. I just as the cleanup is easier,
- 28:03I'm lazy. Does it make it crispier?
- 28:07Yeah, like you like bake it and then you like it makes it crispy
- 28:09on top. But I've always wanted one of
- 28:11those like fancy pizza ovens. I don't know if you have one of
- 28:13those, but those like fun too. OK, what about your pre workout
- 28:17snacks? I love the Cliff kids bar, those
- 28:19are really solid. The Z bars, right?
- 28:22Yeah, that's where they are. Yep, Z bars.
- 28:24I'm really into them too, so I'm gonna ask you.
- 28:25What your favorite favorite? Just the chocolate chip.
- 28:28OK. Yeah, what's yours?
- 28:30I like the iced oatmeal ones randomly.
- 28:32I don't know why Chase. Chase likes those perfect.
- 28:36Variety pack or whatever. Yeah.
- 28:40And then what's your favorite post workout snack?
- 28:42Usually like a protein shake at the gym and then I'll come home
- 28:46and eat lunch. So protein shake smoothies with
- 28:49Brooke. Shout out Brooke again.
- 28:53Have to start sending things to South Carolina for me.
- 28:58I'm a big shoe girl. So what's your favorite pair of
- 29:00cakes? I recently got some All Birds
- 29:02and I really like them. They're very simple and they're
- 29:06sustainable brand and they're comfy, yeah.
- 29:09And you can wear them on the sand, right?
- 29:12You can probably. They're washable.
- 29:14They're easily washable. I have not worn them on the sand
- 29:19I. Was thinking it was something
- 29:20different. OK, never mind.
- 29:21I was thinking that it was like easy, like draining like, oh,
- 29:25yeah, yeah, yeah, no, I'm yeah. OK, no, but don't worry.
- 29:28I'm on the sand, people. Cool.
- 29:32Any last like words of wisdom? Any last tips?
- 29:34Any anything like that? No, I'm just thankful that you
- 29:38thought of me to be on here and I hope that someone can take
- 29:42something from it and if not they they'll just follow you
- 29:45because you're the best. I'm so happy we became, I don't
