- 0:01oh god oh my god It's like the worst Foley work.
- 0:33Just like shaming ghosts. Thunking along. Ghost
- 0:38shaming and thunk noises. You're a whore. What
- 0:45is this? A family reunion? Fucking get out of
- 0:48here. How many chicks you been with with belly
- 0:52button rings? I was talking to Pete about this
- 0:54today. One. One? Yeah. I'm only a one too. No
- 1:00one as well. I've been a bit of a who. So a lot.
- 1:06Yeah. Like I don't have a tangible number. Allegedly,
- 1:10every chick Pete has ever dated has had a belly
- 1:13button ring. Interesting. Yeah, that's weird.
- 1:15That is a weird Pete fact. Yeah. I like that.
- 1:20I like that knowledge. Pete got married at like
- 1:2212, right? Yeah, that's about right. So his dating
- 1:26was one and she had a belly button ring. Yeah,
- 1:30I think you've got the measure of it, Sean. Yeah.
- 1:34So earlier today I saw a, you know, a screen
- 1:38capture of something from a Facebook group called
- 1:41Halloween Freaks. And this guy, this guy, Ted,
- 1:45just said. If you're like me, you know that Halloween
- 1:47is the perfect time for fucking and sucking and
- 1:51dripping wet with sex fucking pussies and hard,
- 1:55frightening cocks. Like this if you agree. And
- 2:02Andrea had to come back with, this is not what
- 2:05this page is about. But Willem Dafoe did like
- 2:10that. Yeah, absolutely. With frightening cuts.
- 2:15Yeah, just an eggplant emoji. Thanks. Oh, man.
- 2:18I love this time of year. Freaks come out at
- 2:22night. Well, I'm fucking exhausted and got my
- 2:25flu shot yesterday and it's fucking wiped me
- 2:27out. So welcome back to Cage Magic Hole and a
- 2:28roundabout way of meeting Nicolas Cage. My name's
- 2:31Sean. I'm here with... Nick. And our producer...
- 2:35Peter, hello. This week, we watched the movie
- 2:38Sunny, which was directed by Nicolas Cage. yeah
- 2:43his one and only yeah which is kind of badass
- 2:46and also weird that this is his one choice yeah
- 2:50i get it based on everything i know about the
- 2:53man which is very little i get it so i don't
- 2:59know anything about the source material for this
- 3:01aside from you know little little bits of trivia
- 3:04or whatever i'm curious if it was also written
- 3:08to be set in new orleans or if nicholas cage
- 3:11took it and reset it in new orleans because that
- 3:15sounds about right it does sound about right
- 3:17that he would have put it there as like a passion
- 3:20project right because the author set it up as
- 3:23autobiographical or semi -autobiographical where
- 3:28did you guys watch this movie at home thanks
- 3:35nick i had a really hard time finding it on the
- 3:38less uh up and up platforms the first one i downloaded
- 3:43was a um a movie claiming to be sunny but it
- 3:47was sunny s -o -n -i a hindi film from 2018 yeah
- 3:52uh josie started that one and she's like it's
- 3:55right here it's free and there's no ads and i'm
- 3:58like easy peter said this isn't the one for us
- 4:00yeah so then weirdly enough the one i found is
- 4:04named sanny oh sanny yeah and that is the correct
- 4:08one but we wouldn't recommend trying to find
- 4:11this in the uh more dubious parts of the internet
- 4:13especially given the fact that you wouldn't necessarily
- 4:18know Going into it, you're like, okay, it's a
- 4:20movie about a male sex worker. This porno sure
- 4:24looks like it could be it. Sure. I mean, yeah.
- 4:29James Franco's changed. Yeah. I mean, has he?
- 4:34Hey, Nick, can I read you my quick review I said
- 4:37to Peter last night? Uh -huh. I finished it.
- 4:40All in all, positive in the film, despite it
- 4:44not really having much of a plot. Well shot.
- 4:47Acting was serviceable to good. Nothing atrocious.
- 4:50The weird self -insert brings the whole thing
- 4:52down from drama to farce, but otherwise, it's
- 4:55a movie I watched. I'd put it a little bit above
- 4:58it's a movie I watched, but your review is pretty
- 5:01fucking accurate. Yeah, yeah. Most of those points
- 5:04are pretty spot on there. I did feel a little
- 5:09better about the acting, especially James Franco.
- 5:14Just as a character piece for him. I think he
- 5:17did a pretty good job about it. I mean, it's
- 5:21James Franco. Yeah, I mean, we can get the hard
- 5:25part of that over. He seems like a douchebag.
- 5:27He's done douchebag shit. He is a good actor,
- 5:30but like, fuck that guy. Yeah, but his weird
- 5:33face. OK, I got to talk about his face for a
- 5:35minute. He does squint a lot in his face. It's
- 5:38one of those like everything turns into a raisin.
- 5:41Like it's like it's all squinched up face. So
- 5:46he smiles and everything is just. I do love his
- 5:50smile. His smile is actually kind of infectious
- 5:53for me because it's just so big and everything
- 5:57about it is smile. OK, OK, I can give that to
- 6:00you. I had a note of I hate his smile, but it's
- 6:02mostly because I hate his squinch face. Well,
- 6:04I hate everything above the nose. Just mouth
- 6:09zone. Yeah, pretty good. He mouth smiles real
- 6:12good. You know, I'd fucking I'd trade Leto in
- 6:16a second. Oh, any day. Any day. Wait. You can
- 6:19bring Franco back. I won't watch his movies,
- 6:21but I'll hate him less than Leto. Oh, okay. Perfect.
- 6:24No, I agree with you. For a second, I was like,
- 6:26what? Are you super pro -Leto all of a sudden?
- 6:29No. Watch the new Tron Aries and just really
- 6:32fucking hot for Leto. Sean was the only person
- 6:35to watch it. My favorite thing I've seen about
- 6:39Tron Aries is a thing on the internet where someone's
- 6:47like, movie Tron Jared Leto's name is John his
- 6:50name is John Tron none of you will deny this
- 6:52because none of you will admit to have seen this
- 6:54film I do love John Tron and what you said earlier
- 6:58was Jonathan Tron I added to the joke yeah prove
- 7:03me wrong go to the movie you're not gonna do
- 7:07it you morbius fuck Oh, yeah. So James Franco
- 7:20comes back after being dishonorably discharged
- 7:25from the military. So he's done with his Army
- 7:28career, decides to go back to New Orleans before
- 7:32heading out to take up a job with a buddy running
- 7:38a bookstore in Texas. So he comes back to New
- 7:42Orleans. We get introduced to his life where,
- 7:45you know, he lives with his mom, who is the I
- 7:49wouldn't even say the madam. She just runs a
- 7:51whore in like a whorehouse, like singular whorehouse.
- 7:57Yeah. And you only have the one bedroom. Yeah.
- 8:03One bedroom has to share it with whore. And hey,
- 8:08I'm getting all my whore. commentary in now you
- 8:12asked for this yeah watching watching this film
- 8:14i was just like well not even not even gonna
- 8:17try yeah this is this is nick's film uh so let's
- 8:23talk about your quote now i'm working through
- 8:26them all right now yeah uh so he gets to come
- 8:29home share a room with a whore and uh his mom's
- 8:34pressuring him into being a whore again because
- 8:38she raised him as like the best male whore in
- 8:41new orleans and but he doesn't want to do that
- 8:49so he tries to get out of it but the life sucks
- 8:52him back in and it's him dealing with all the
- 8:56horrible consequences of being a whore yeah it's
- 9:01pretty good there's also like a dad theme And
- 9:04complications with mom. Yes, there are some daddy
- 9:07problems and some mommy issues. I mean, I'd say
- 9:11the biggest mommy issue is she was whoring out
- 9:16her son at age 12. Yeah, super fucked up. Like
- 9:19all of it is pretty fucked up. Yeah. So, yeah,
- 9:22like the little cast rundown. So you got James
- 9:24Franco as the main character, Sonny. You've got
- 9:27Brenda Blethen as Jewel, his mom. Harry Dean
- 9:31Stanton is Henry, who for most of the movie,
- 9:34you just is like, OK, this guy who's been around
- 9:36in his life, who's sort of a fuck up drunk gambler.
- 9:39Yeah, but he fucking kills it. This is great.
- 9:42One of my favorite Harry Dean. And he turns out
- 9:45he's his dad, but that's later. We'll figure
- 9:47that out. Mina Savari in like, so she's been
- 9:50in at this point, like American pie and American
- 9:53pie too. And American beauty, a lot of American,
- 9:56all American, all American actress. And then
- 9:59like her career, like she doesn't fall off in
- 10:02like a crazy way. She just sort of goes the way
- 10:04of like. aging women actresses where she becomes
- 10:07like a tv actor after her film career kind of
- 10:10tails off so she made stuff like last year she's
- 10:13still in the scene interesting um but this is
- 10:17one of her last like big leading roles for a
- 10:21while um and then beyond that like nick cage
- 10:25plays a Mm hmm. Yeah. I mean, your name's acid
- 10:38yellow. You don't go around in chartreuse. That's
- 10:41true. That's confusing. That's very confusing.
- 10:44And that's kind of it. The only other one that
- 10:46I liked was that dude who gambles with his with
- 10:51Harry Dean Stanton. Oh, yeah. With the fucking
- 10:53giant cigar. Who is that guy? He looks super
- 10:55familiar. Yeah. His name is Seymour Castle. He's
- 10:59been in like a billion things. He's just one
- 11:01of those like bit actors that, you know, his
- 11:02face. and like his face looks like it always
- 11:05should have a cigar and in this movie it does
- 11:08yeah that's sunny folks that is kind of sunny
- 11:14how nick how do you feel as a person who likes
- 11:17new orleans how did this rep new orleans for
- 11:20you uh god it made me want to go back to the
- 11:2470s because every time i've been to new orleans
- 11:27zero prostitutes this is set in 1991 isn't it
- 11:33what a shame yeah no toots at all the only toots
- 11:37i got were from some dork's trombone did you
- 11:42ever see a guy lick a guitar oh i saw some mean
- 11:48licks on guitar but uh i don't know if i saw
- 11:51a guy lick a guitar that guy was pretty wild
- 11:54he was pretty wild that drunk ass scene have
- 11:57you ever had like whiskey and club sodas and
- 12:00like slammed it on the table to ultra fizz it
- 12:03out no none of that made sense sean did you have
- 12:07you had that experience like what the fuck was
- 12:09he doing i wanted to ask if if anyone knew what
- 12:11was going on there okay so later in the movie
- 12:14we'll get to it but sunny is like timeline doesn't
- 12:17matter yeah everything's gone out the window
- 12:18his life has fallen to shit he's back in the
- 12:21game he's sad about the game his dad has died
- 12:24We'll talk about that. He learned who his dad
- 12:26was. He learned who his dad was. So he goes out
- 12:29and he gets fucked up like big time. And he's
- 12:32drinking whiskeys and like club soda. But he
- 12:35fills it up, puts a napkin on top of this cup
- 12:38and then slams it. Right. To make it all fizz
- 12:41up. But why? I don't know. I can only imagine
- 12:45that it's probably like a different like mouth
- 12:51feel like the. the drinking experience has to
- 12:54be different because you're drinking something.
- 12:56Yeah. That's like ultra fizzy. Like the bubbles
- 12:58are just going crazy at that point. And then
- 13:01you slam a whiskey soda that way. I mean, I want
- 13:04to try it. I'm curious about it. But I can't
- 13:06imagine being a bartender and allowing that.
- 13:09The fucking mess of it. And then every time,
- 13:12a new napkin. So what's he doing with those other
- 13:14napkins? He's throwing them on the ground. You
- 13:16gotta fucking clean that shit up. Yeah, it was
- 13:18interesting. But if there was ever a city to
- 13:21do it, I think New Orleans would be pretty into
- 13:23that. Most of the action of this movie takes
- 13:26place around Bourbon Street and the adjacent
- 13:29blocks, which is just as... i mean like no whores
- 13:34but it's just as wild now as then i'm ready to
- 13:38go back to new orleans this movie fueled me up
- 13:40yeah it's a pretty good like interesting picture
- 13:45of new orleans i mean like it's definitely gritty
- 13:46crappy you know like here's the which is still
- 13:50new orleans like yeah right without the prostitution
- 13:52or the visible prostitution right uh that's still
- 13:56new orleans like i don't know if katrina really
- 13:59fucked that city up or not i mean that's a obviously
- 14:03it did and that's a take that i will sure fucked
- 14:08it up in a different way like fucked up the culture
- 14:10of it maybe not you know right that the culture
- 14:13of it and well the heart of the city is still
- 14:14very strong right you know the restrictive aspect
- 14:17aspect of it is really like republican douchebags
- 14:20fucking with no puritanical rules fuck off but
- 14:24josie and i were talking about it and she's like
- 14:25this is a great city to film like this kind of
- 14:28period piece because the architecture of these
- 14:32parts of the city have not changed. I mean, there
- 14:35are buildings and homes there that have existed
- 14:39for like 150, 200 years. Sean, have you been
- 14:43to new Orleans? No. Okay. Let's go on a, um,
- 14:47cocaine fueled trip to new Orleans. Oh, I can
- 14:51show you all the places that Nicholas Cage has
- 14:54lived and the place where he will rest. Oh, that's
- 14:57right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. His pyramids. I do feel
- 15:02like we need to go see his mausoleum. It's pretty
- 15:05sweet. Yeah, I agree. He actually has two plots.
- 15:09He bought two plots, one for me and one for him.
- 15:13He just doesn't know it yet. He was one of the
- 15:17last people that was able to buy into St. Louis
- 15:22Cemetery. That's wild. So you can't you can't
- 15:25buy into it anymore. So because people like us
- 15:29want to buy in now. taking down property value
- 15:32yeah exactly yeah my bones are gonna ruin this
- 15:37property value so this movie like i feel like
- 15:41it has a strong start like the whole thing is
- 15:43like he gets home from the army he wants to start
- 15:47a new life get clean get away from his like the
- 15:51mom who like made a made a whore out of him does
- 15:55nothing to actually do that well he tried the
- 15:59one thing he tried he tried to he tried to he
- 16:02tried to get a job at the suit shop yeah and
- 16:04was immediately like no and then straight up
- 16:08no also those ladies solicited him while he was
- 16:11there yeah which is bad business bad biz i understand
- 16:15i was so what i was gonna say is like you know
- 16:18he wants to get out of the life but you know
- 16:21everyone through like circumstance and manipulation
- 16:25gets pulled back in and as soon as he's back
- 16:28in every trick every lady john like shorts him
- 16:34and you know he gets more and more agitated by
- 16:37the whole thing and kind of halfway through the
- 16:40film he's just like well this is who i am now
- 16:43this is this is all i can ever be and then it's
- 16:46just kind of sad the rest of the film yeah it
- 16:49is very heartbreaking to uh watch him come back
- 16:53with like full of vigor he's got an enthusiasm
- 16:56for books and literature and everything about
- 17:02his life from the moment he gets back into new
- 17:05orleans it's just like sorry dude sorry sonny
- 17:08you're the best dick for hire in town and that's
- 17:11all you'll ever be so that was that was one of
- 17:14my questions for you actually nick is like What's
- 17:17it like being the best dick for hire? Yes, thank
- 17:19you. No, my question is like these movies are
- 17:22all sort of like predicated on the fact that
- 17:24like you come back to your town and like everyone
- 17:26fucking knows you and you're pulled back into
- 17:28the game. But like New Orleans isn't a small
- 17:31city, right? I mean, it's not like huge, but
- 17:34the idea that like the second he gets back, everyone's
- 17:37like, that's that best dick I've ever had. It's
- 17:40like, oh, hey, Sonny, I'm at the grocery store.
- 17:43Look at this eggplant. And he's like, yeah, I
- 17:45know. uh it's kind of not like obviously i've
- 17:50never lived there but it's regional like everything
- 17:54he's talking about is like the quarter he even
- 17:57mentions like i can't go anywhere in the quarter
- 17:59without being recognized for what i am for being
- 18:04a big dick whatever swanger so yeah most of it
- 18:08and we're still talking about the 70s and stuff
- 18:10too or i think it's 70s 70s 80s something like
- 18:13that that kind of was 91 that's what like it
- 18:15didn't say 1991 in the beginning of the film
- 18:17oh i can't read um just like sunny i pretend
- 18:23i'm real good pretender he's also working like
- 18:28richer people it's not just his neighborhood.
- 18:31Like they're kind of far afield. Like they go
- 18:34to the house to work the double. Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:38There's a little bit of time spent outside of
- 18:40the quarter for sure. So, but so like he gets
- 18:43to that point where he's like, well, this is
- 18:45who I am. But then what's the, what's his girlfriend's
- 18:48name? What's the, her name's Carol. Carol. She
- 18:52decides that, you know, maybe they can't change,
- 18:56but they could at least hope for, they can at
- 18:58least try for anything else. And rather than,
- 19:01you know, him being like, sure, he's just like,
- 19:03nope, this is who we are. This is all we'll ever
- 19:05be. And so first half hopeful. Second half crushes
- 19:10someone else's hope. Yeah, he's doing exactly
- 19:12what his mom did to him. Yeah. So it's real sad.
- 19:17Is this movie good? I think it is. I think it's
- 19:20actually kind of good. I don't think like, OK,
- 19:23despite my like very it's fine review of it.
- 19:28It is fine. Like, and the, like I said, the acting
- 19:30is for the most part good. Uh, I only have a
- 19:33few, there's only a few things where I'm just
- 19:34like, I don't know about that, but the acting's
- 19:37good. It's directed shockingly well for, um,
- 19:40I didn't expect it to be directed well at all.
- 19:43Like it's beautiful. The score is actually really
- 19:46good. It's really good. Nicholas Cage is as an
- 19:51actor, the weakest moment of this. Yeah. Totally.
- 19:54Oh, that's a whole different movie. Yeah. Yeah.
- 19:58I would watch that movie, but well, I would have
- 20:01to watch that movie. It meanders a bit. It's
- 20:08there's not a strong through line throughout,
- 20:10but like it's, it's well done. Like you can tell
- 20:15the people who made it cared about what they
- 20:17were making and they made something that I don't
- 20:21know how culturally important it is, but it isn't
- 20:24bad by any means. yeah it could have used a little
- 20:27more like structural through line for it um everything
- 20:33that happens with the characters is pretty much
- 20:37in line and it tracks well but there's just not
- 20:40something that really makes it go scene to scene
- 20:43unfortunately yeah um beyond just beating sunny
- 20:49down yeah if and if they would have spent more
- 20:51than like two scenes hinting about the daddy
- 20:55issues like if that was like his through line
- 20:57like his dad wasn't around so his mom took advantage
- 21:00of him his dad wasn't around so he went to the
- 21:01army if like that was the through line throughout
- 21:03then that would have tied up the made the ending
- 21:06and his like kind of heel turn makes so much
- 21:10more sense yeah and that one scene where he pulls
- 21:14the picture down off the wall right it's like
- 21:17well i didn't really love that story of it i
- 21:22mean like i enjoyed the story of like oh my daddy
- 21:25came in and protected my mom scared some dude
- 21:27off yeah i mean like it just sort of came out
- 21:31of nowhere it felt like it was just kind of added
- 21:33in or like a scene was built to tell that story
- 21:37yeah there was nothing bringing us to that story
- 21:41Yeah, like I said, I just don't think there's
- 21:44much of a through line throughout that carries
- 21:45the entire that carries it from scene to scene
- 21:48or carries the entire narrative. So my feeling
- 21:51on this is like I really like this movie and
- 21:53I think it was actually pretty good overall.
- 21:55But like it's there's basically nothing happens.
- 21:58You know, there's like it's so thin overall,
- 22:00even though like I liked it because it's so like
- 22:03specifically character driven. So like what I
- 22:07what I want to talk about is like the performances
- 22:09of sort of the main. three characters you know
- 22:13it's like carol carol and sunny jewel and oh
- 22:17i guess henry um his dad yeah i love that scene
- 22:22where uh henry and sunny were talking and uh
- 22:28henry was like oh you gotta think about the the
- 22:30consequences and sunny's like oh you think i
- 22:33shouldn't get out also you think i should just
- 22:35stay and he's henry's like no but You got to
- 22:40realize, like, just be prepared because the things
- 22:43that you don't have to think about, the things
- 22:45that normal people think about, like paying bills,
- 22:48like going to PTA meetings, like it's hard in
- 22:52a different way. Coming from somebody who makes
- 22:56his living picking pockets and stealing. Right.
- 23:00Talking to a male whore. OK, so let's get back
- 23:03to the dad, because I think he's my favorite
- 23:05character in this. I really liked him a lot.
- 23:07So we'll go back to really well. Yeah, we'll
- 23:10go back to Harry Dean Stanton. But how about
- 23:11we do the mom, Brenda Blethen Jewel? What did
- 23:17you all think of her accent? It was the weakest.
- 23:21Yeah, well. uh i think it's i mean it tried the
- 23:27hardest it did try the hardest uh there are definitely
- 23:32times in it it's it veers very close to channing
- 23:35tatum's gambit oh yeah yes yeah i don't know
- 23:39a lot of uh off the beaten path women from louisiana
- 23:45like i don't know a lot of like accents from
- 23:48parishes outside of sure yeah uh the main portion
- 23:52of new orleans or anything uh the the tourist
- 23:54areas i don't know the the accents of the people
- 23:57who do not get a lot of like outside influence
- 24:01it it could be relatively accurate it was very
- 24:07distracting uh especially in the beginning i
- 24:09was like oh that's what we're doing like i got
- 24:12over frank fucking franco's accent pretty quick
- 24:16yeah i had a note immediately i was like and
- 24:19then it was like yeah it's all right yeah i i
- 24:21kind of settled into it and i was like okay yeah
- 24:23actually there is a little bit of that like kind
- 24:27of wet drawl sort of thing gross yeah wet drawl
- 24:33yeah but the mom was extra and it was yeah a
- 24:38little off putting it it took me out of it a
- 24:42lot but then at the same time I mean, I have
- 24:46a dad who says Creek instead of Creek. Fair enough.
- 24:49He was raised in Oregon. Like, why does he do
- 24:52that? I don't know. Rural areas. Wash your hands.
- 24:57He says Washington. Yeah. And I live in Washington.
- 25:01Yeah, I live in Washington to him. He lives across
- 25:04the river from Washington. And it's Washington.
- 25:08It's across the Creek. Yeah. Just across. The
- 25:11Columbia Crick. That thick crick. I don't like
- 25:17that. I don't like that either. Yeah, you shouldn't.
- 25:21So, yeah, I mean, rural accents are fucking weird.
- 25:25Yeah. They take bends, man. So she reminded me
- 25:30like in in a very like more humanized, toned
- 25:34down version of the mom from Wild at Heart. That's
- 25:37exactly what I was thinking. And also Harry Dean
- 25:40Stanton from that. Like he's he's a very different
- 25:43character. He's almost like the fusion of that
- 25:45character from Wild at Heart and the character
- 25:47from that Dennis Hopper played in Rumblefish.
- 25:52The dad, the drunk dad from that. It's like if
- 25:54you. slam fucked those two together like aesthetically
- 25:58and character wise i don't want to think about
- 26:00harry dean stanton and just harry dean stanton
- 26:02and dennis hopper slam slam fucking listen man
- 26:08And you have problems with the things I say.
- 26:11Sometimes I can get you. But no, I kept thinking
- 26:15about that. Like the aesthetic of Dennis Hopper's
- 26:17character from Rumblefish is exactly what this
- 26:20is. It's all like the hat, the style, kind of
- 26:22the fuck up drunk. You know, he's like kind of
- 26:24a nice, likable guy, even though you're like
- 26:27you're a fuck up. He's affable. Yeah, he's very
- 26:29affable. You're sort of just like, yeah, I probably
- 26:32drank with that guy. You know, like, oh, we absolutely
- 26:35drink with those guys. They're our favorite guys.
- 26:38That's true. I just OK, just for funsies. I just
- 26:46Googled was Harry Dean Stanton ever young? What
- 26:51the fuck? He only ever looks like he only ever
- 26:55looks like a 68 year old man. I mean, it's a
- 26:58good question. The first thing that came up,
- 27:01yes, Harry Dean Stanton was young. Great. Thanks,
- 27:04AI. Fuck you, AI. Yeah, I don't believe that.
- 27:07At one point, Harry Dean Stanton was a child.
- 27:10Prove it, bitch. Yeah, that looked like a 68
- 27:13-year -old man. Numerically, yeah. Yeah, exactly.
- 27:17He's got some kind of weird version of Benjamin
- 27:20Buttons where he came out 68 and he stayed 68.
- 27:23Just stayed that the entire time. He's a Highlander.
- 27:29all right well let's talk about him then because
- 27:31like he's he's probably my favorite character
- 27:32in this entire thing like yeah yeah yeah um i
- 27:37i think i kind of like his whole like vibe like
- 27:42we kind of get introduced to him is our first
- 27:46introduction like him being in jail yeah yeah
- 27:49and carol having to go blow the bonds person
- 27:52to get him out jules running this like scam behind
- 27:57the scenes She's always using money as kind of
- 28:01motivation for the game. So like I can absolutely
- 28:07see somebody like that being like, oh, well,
- 28:09my fuck boy is in jail. I could pay money to
- 28:15a bondsman or I could just have some other mouth
- 28:20suck his dong off. And I mean, one of those has.
- 28:27zero repercussions to me sure yeah true i mean
- 28:33that that's the pimpin game to get back to henry
- 28:37like that's how we get introduced to him right
- 28:39uh henry comes back he's you know lumpy ass harry
- 28:44dean stanton and he looks like a melted candle
- 28:47like just always oh man one of those decorative
- 28:49candles that you get at the county fair yeah
- 28:52yeah there you go put a hat on it yep borrow
- 28:55john's hat put it on the candle wait just because
- 29:02just because we name dropped john i did want
- 29:04it the one thought i had the one note i made
- 29:06for this film is when harry dane sand does eat
- 29:08it in this film spoilers and like his car gets
- 29:12exploded by a semi -truck and all that's left
- 29:15is flaming flaming wreckage and a hat in the
- 29:18middle of the road i'm like that's how john's
- 29:20gonna go Okay, we gotta just talk about it. His
- 29:24character's fine. It doesn't matter. He just
- 29:26has these moments with Sonny. It's nice. He's
- 29:28a father figure. He has dad moments. Dad moments
- 29:31with Sonny without knowing that it's his son.
- 29:35It was pretty clear after the first one. Without
- 29:38knowing, it was his dad. Let me rephrase. And
- 29:42then he leaves a gambling situation. And he finally
- 29:45wins. He wins a game of gin and he's like, everything's...
- 29:49Coming up Millhouse and he leaves, he gets in
- 29:53his car and as he turns his car on and starts
- 29:55to drive, Josie's like, uh -uh, don't do it.
- 29:58And he like pulls three feet out, a semi hits
- 30:01him and his car explodes. Like what the fuck
- 30:05is in that car? Fireball. Yeah. Like that, that
- 30:08part of the movie, I was just like, what? Yeah.
- 30:11Happened. I thought the waiter was going to like,
- 30:13just come out and fucking knife him. Like the
- 30:15waiter, he. threatened like two scenes earlier
- 30:18yeah he's like i gotta close up i gotta close
- 30:20up oh that waiter oh that waiter was a dick yeah
- 30:24i knew he was about to die i just didn't see
- 30:27death by exploding car after semi -truck collision
- 30:31being the cause yeah like that's that's the weirdest
- 30:36weirdest way to introduce his death like because
- 30:38you're right he he threatens this waiter earlier
- 30:41because they go out on a fancy date and uh for
- 30:43jewel's birthday yeah for jewel's birthday and
- 30:45she's like kind of it's kind of all she wants
- 30:49yeah so she has her shoes off and the waiter
- 30:51comes over and is a super dick and he's just
- 30:55like well as you learn to use plates and napkins
- 30:57you know it's like oh fuck off dude yeah he was
- 31:00a fucking piece of shit But yeah, Harry Dean
- 31:03Stanton then threatens to kill that guy. Oh,
- 31:05and he has such a good scene of it, too. Like
- 31:07he pockets one of the knives off the table and
- 31:11then gets it right up the nose. Yeah. So, yeah,
- 31:14like to your point, Sean, like it would have
- 31:16been more interesting, I think, in a lot of ways,
- 31:17if that guy had been like, fuck this guy, I'm
- 31:20going to get mine, you know, but instead it's
- 31:22just a random truck and your car full of explosives.
- 31:28He got he got he got little girl in Wicker Man
- 31:31for real. Yeah, that's exactly what I thought.
- 31:37Nick Cage wakes up on a dock. That's the scene.
- 31:43sees harry dean stanton in the water dives in
- 31:45after him the water explodes what so he's dead
- 31:52then they see his grave and it's like oh that's
- 31:55your daddy it's like oh fuck why didn't you tell
- 31:58me well he was worried he was a failure we're
- 32:00all failures yeah that was like the one like
- 32:04that was the one line that really like i really
- 32:07enjoyed his jewel is like it's easier to say
- 32:09than to live with oh yeah yeah i really like
- 32:12that that was probably my most uh impactful line
- 32:17if i had to pull one from this film it's a solid
- 32:20line it's a great scene that again just falls
- 32:24flat because nothing really builds to it there's
- 32:28no like emotional arc there yeah it was pretty
- 32:30weak throughout it was definitely i don't know
- 32:34even a tertiary concern if that yeah That delivery.
- 32:38I really liked Franco in that his reaction to
- 32:42the lines were really good. I felt like his emotions
- 32:46were pretty justified. Franco does have some
- 32:49good like cage out freak outs in this film. Oh,
- 32:53like when he and Scott Kahn are double teaming
- 32:57those sisters. Yeah. Oh, and when he's like finds
- 33:01out she's like addicted to cough syrup. Yeah.
- 33:04Which also that was such a fucking weird thing.
- 33:07We pivot. We pivot. OK, so he he goes on this
- 33:10double date with his buddy in Texas who ends
- 33:13up not being able to get him a bookstore job.
- 33:15Scott Kahn of gone in 60 seconds. Kahn in 60
- 33:19seconds. Kahn in 60 seconds. Son of James Kahn
- 33:22of Hollywood. No, that's the fucking flying Elvis's
- 33:28one. Oh, Honeymoon in Vegas. Honeymoon in Vegas.
- 33:31Yeah. That's his dad. Oh, nice. Yeah. Well, you
- 33:34know, I see it. I see it a lot. Yeah. So they
- 33:37go on a double date with these sisters and obviously
- 33:41they end up back at sister's house. And so Franco
- 33:46hooks up with this chick. They're in bed and
- 33:49she's like, oh, my God, you're so good at that.
- 33:51You should do that for a living. He's like, oh,
- 33:53I do. And then he explains all this thing about
- 33:55like being a whore. uh in his words i'm a whore
- 34:00then she's she gets uncomfortable and then she
- 34:03goes to the bathroom and she's just drinking
- 34:06cough syrup and he interrupts her and is like
- 34:09what's this and he starts getting super fucking
- 34:12aggro about it and he's like oh you're addicted
- 34:15you're addicted to coding and he's smashing things
- 34:17and he's just pulling everything out he's yelling
- 34:19and he's freaking out he's fucking naked and
- 34:22We never saw Franco's dong. No, no dong. Yeah,
- 34:26close. We got close a couple times. A lot of
- 34:28almost dong. A lot of butt. Lots of James Franco
- 34:31butt. Very fit James Franco. Yeah. At least three
- 34:36sets of boobs. Okay, so there was codeine woman.
- 34:41Codeine woman. There was the older woman trick
- 34:44that he used to have. Right. And, oh, the woman
- 34:48at the, like, fancy party? No, he just like tore
- 34:52her top. Oh, no. What about the cop one? Yeah.
- 34:57No, we didn't actually get to see that because
- 35:00he gets her on the bed and handcuffs her. There's
- 35:04a scene where he's requested to go for a dress
- 35:07event and it's he has to dress up like a cop
- 35:09and do cop stuff. And then he has to fuck her
- 35:12with the nightstick. Yeah. And she sucks off
- 35:14the nightstick. It's like everything about that,
- 35:16like. fuck cops but not that way yeah i'm really
- 35:20glad he looked as uncomfortable with that situation
- 35:23as i felt yeah so i'll re -watch it someday and
- 35:27i'll i'll text everybody that listens to this
- 35:30all 13 of you uh what that boob was the missing
- 35:34boob the missing boob yeah the okay one of the
- 35:38things we mentioned in that though they they
- 35:40get um he and mina savari get contracted to go
- 35:45to like a double date you know you fucked the
- 35:48man i fucked the guy or the the lady and um oh
- 35:52gosh yeah and it's like this big fancy party
- 35:55and there's this scene where he's like eating
- 35:59a sandwich in the kitchen oh yeah crushing it
- 36:02into his fucking mouth and I don't know. I can't
- 36:06remember. I think I was talking to you when I
- 36:08was coming back from somewhere the other day.
- 36:10And there was some comedian a while ago that
- 36:12was making fun of James Franco, maybe at his
- 36:14roast back in like 20 or 2006 or something like
- 36:18that. They were just like, James Franco just
- 36:20always looks like a person who's eaten a white
- 36:23bread sandwich. And you can just see the like
- 36:25leftover white bread in the mouth, like stuck
- 36:27in the teeth. And that's exactly what I was thinking
- 36:30about that moment. And then immediately he's
- 36:32just like, I'm going to fuck you. Yeah. Tears
- 36:34her blouse and throws her on the ground. Yeah.
- 36:36He had no fucking care for like, I don't know.
- 36:41fucking rhyme or reason in that it was just like
- 36:44oh okay well the party's over i got caught eating
- 36:48a sandwich in the kitchen better fuck this hoe
- 36:51better fucker and then we're gonna go watch you
- 36:53mina safari fuck this dude and he's just gonna
- 36:56be like oh gee whiz gee oh gee whiz that's it
- 37:00that's it gee whiz i loved how like fucking exasperated
- 37:04her face was during that whole fucking scene
- 37:07that was a great scene but the fucking wildest
- 37:09part was when the kids come in at the end oh
- 37:12dad are you done fucking your horse yeah your
- 37:19casual saturday night yeah i can't wait to throw
- 37:24a fancy dress party you're all invited oh thanks
- 37:30i wear a turtleneck so i think we're at the point
- 37:37we got to talk about Nick Cage we got to talk
- 37:39about Nick Cage in this movie and his performance
- 37:41and like the weirdness of the insertion of him
- 37:44as a character um but like I do I do understand
- 37:48why Tommy Wiseau saw this movie and was like
- 37:53franco that's my guy because of these scenes
- 37:56where he's like fucked up he's crying he's like
- 37:59intense he's all over the place he's violent
- 38:01he's crazy yeah like i that's the part that i'm
- 38:04sure he watched and was like he's a slave to
- 38:06the emotions right oh actually uh mentioning
- 38:10that real quick before we get into like right
- 38:12before the acid yellow scene When he's super
- 38:17drunk and he's just outside that bar and there's
- 38:19the time lapse. Oh, yeah. And he's just standing
- 38:21there with like the like the classic hurricane
- 38:24kind of glass. And everybody's like zipping around
- 38:28behind him. But he's just kind of wobbling because
- 38:30he's so fucked up. I thought that was really
- 38:32well. That was cool. I like that a lot. That
- 38:34was a good shot. Oh, my thought there was just
- 38:37like the return of a guano vision. Oh, yeah.
- 38:39Well, it was also like I think Whippet was playing
- 38:43in the background of that scene, too. great just
- 38:46like again like sound design music design in
- 38:49this was really really well done yeah a lot of
- 38:52the technical aspects of this film were very
- 38:54tight yeah so yeah nick k nick cage's character
- 38:58acid yellow is introduced right after this bender
- 39:02scene um right after harry dean stanton's death
- 39:05franco find out about his father goes on this
- 39:08bender um and shows up at the door of the pimp
- 39:13acid yellow um Because he wants to he wants a
- 39:16date, but with a man and just this were introduced
- 39:19to one of the weirdest Nick Nick cages ever.
- 39:24Fake nose. Classic of this era. The season three.
- 39:27Yeah. What is with the prosthetic noses? Why?
- 39:32I think I think that it was something that he
- 39:34was doing for a period of time that helped him.
- 39:36Like, I'm a new character. Right. He was going
- 39:39through shit like he was fucking with his teeth.
- 39:42He was fucking with like. his hairline all this
- 39:45stuff it's like you get to be a new person if
- 39:48you like change some part of it allowed him to
- 39:50disassociate with the celebrity nick cage to
- 39:54do these indie things i mean that's my that's
- 39:56my stretch on it i don't know or he just is like
- 39:58i'm gonna be a weird dude in a ferrari who goes
- 40:01is everyone okay yeah i don't know yeah it was
- 40:09it was a choice but yeah so he has like five
- 40:14minutes less than five minutes of screen time
- 40:16and most of what we see of him is through blitzed
- 40:20out first person yeah drunko vision is a good
- 40:23way to put it yeah sort of fisheye flared out
- 40:26on the edges I'm not the biggest fan of drunk
- 40:32drunk vision in a film as a device unless like
- 40:35especially this late in the game but the juxtaposition
- 40:39of like Nick Cage, all blurry and like blitzed
- 40:42out from Franco's point of view. And then just
- 40:45turning to Franco and it just being kind of a
- 40:47normal shot because no one else is that gone.
- 40:51The group, the green poodle on the bar was green
- 40:55and red. Yeah. A weird mini poodle. Yeah. I don't,
- 41:00I didn't understand that. I didn't understand
- 41:02most anything about that. It was a very eccentric.
- 41:04Yeah. Like home. And it's so, it's so out of,
- 41:10it's so tonally out there for this film. Like
- 41:14it, it's a different film and it's not a good
- 41:17film at that point. It's a very brief sequence,
- 41:20but it just like it. it takes what trust we have
- 41:24in the storytelling up to this point it's like
- 41:26all right we're done i will add just like a point
- 41:30for clarification uh in this scene he didn't
- 41:34show up there because he wanted to fuck a dude
- 41:36he showed up there yeah because he had some extra
- 41:40energy to burn as you said and he was clearly
- 41:44just going there to beat somebody up and The
- 41:48time of the film, yes, he's going to go up and
- 41:50beat up a gay guy because nobody's going to report
- 41:54it. This did have my favorite quote of the entire
- 41:57movie. It was Nick Cage. He does a line and he
- 42:01goes, I love Kukak. That was my quote, too. I
- 42:08like that. Yeah. No, it's just it's sick cane
- 42:14sword, though. Nick Cage pulls out a cane sword.
- 42:16He does pull out a cane sword. But it's also
- 42:19like the oldest like schlubby man running after
- 42:22someone like I'm going to get you. You know,
- 42:24I even watch this on one and a half speed because,
- 42:26you know, I do. Yeah. Yeah. Even that I was like,
- 42:29that's slow, dude. That's a slow run. I just
- 42:34like for me, like the way you put it, Nick, makes
- 42:38a lot of sense in terms of like why he would
- 42:40like go there to beat up a guy. same effect you
- 42:44could have just had him fight a guy in a bathroom
- 42:45you could have had him just pick up a john and
- 42:47do it like the whole the nick cage of it all
- 42:49and going specifically to a male whorehouse it
- 42:54didn't need to be there it didn't need to be
- 42:56its own location and i feel like even for the
- 42:58timing of this film like a lot of the implications
- 43:00of nick cage's character are in poor taste yeah
- 43:05i just i just like this movie loses loses half
- 43:10a star just for this losing half a point just
- 43:13for this scene it's kind of too bad because i
- 43:15feel like had he not included himself in that
- 43:18crazed character this movie would be better it's
- 43:22it's kind of still how i feel about the whole
- 43:24thing it's like it's all sort of like a medium
- 43:26good for me and this makes it like a little dip
- 43:31where it could have just maintained the medium
- 43:33good like i don't think this movie is like oh
- 43:35fuck what a transcendent piece of art but it's
- 43:39something you know yeah no it's got legs to it
- 43:42yeah clear like i said clearly everyone involved
- 43:45cared about what they were making yeah yeah which
- 43:48is not what i was expecting going into this entire
- 43:50week you know no i expected this to be a muff
- 43:52a must a muff a muff i also expected muff i expected
- 43:59this to be a must a much i expected this to be
- 44:04a much rougher watch before before we get into
- 44:09the kjo grid the very limited grid we can have
- 44:14for this one i do want to just discuss the end
- 44:16of the film where like god name sorry my brain
- 44:19today uh girlfriend yeah carol uh carol um the
- 44:25guy the gets a car from he's a car dealer and
- 44:33he's like oh is it the same dude yeah yeah that's
- 44:37why at the end she's like he wants the car back
- 44:40we're gonna drive it to mexico got it yeah okay
- 44:42uh so it's she says a couple times in the movie
- 44:45that every time like he always asks her to marry
- 44:47him and so since frank goes like we're not we're
- 44:50not leaving i'm not leaving this life you know
- 44:52she's like he's gonna ask me again i'm gonna
- 44:54say yes and she does so they go to drive off
- 44:58and there's the scene where like she's crying
- 45:01in the car and like franco's running up after
- 45:05her and they have the moment in the street where
- 45:07they embrace hard cut to franco just in front
- 45:10of his mom's door again i'm like i like that
- 45:13yeah yeah i like the reality of that yeah the
- 45:18of the person imagining a better life but like
- 45:21unwilling to take the steps to do it for themselves
- 45:24yeah and just living in the fucking shit that
- 45:29they've developed for themselves yeah it's fucking
- 45:32real yeah the ending um the the scene with the
- 45:36mom uh saying you know um it's easier to say
- 45:40we're all fuck -ups than hard it's harder to
- 45:41live with that with that like um his his freak
- 45:45out in the bathroom with a girl and like how
- 45:47it's supposed to be different on like this side
- 45:49of things like there's all these little moments
- 45:51of genius like that like if we could extrapolate
- 45:55that into a whole film great movie instead we
- 45:58just kind of get these small little kind of hints
- 46:01of it all yeah and it doesn't hold together which
- 46:04is really i think the shame of this film and
- 46:07makes me wish nick cage maybe directed another
- 46:10film yeah so he kind of got into this window
- 46:12where it was like this movie was panned critically
- 46:15it made no money you know it was a total fucking
- 46:19loss like what 130 000 worldwide yeah like disgustingly
- 46:23small amount of money that's 130 000 yeah i think
- 46:29that there's a part of it that like it tied into
- 46:31the weird like tax failure of the next decade
- 46:36that he has you know where it's like I can't
- 46:39take risks. I can't do this and like fall back
- 46:42on, you know, my fortune or my name or any of
- 46:45these things that like I think he he stopped
- 46:48directing because this hit at the wrong time.
- 46:52And that sucks because it's actually not bad.
- 46:55Yeah, I would love to see him try again. Yeah.
- 46:59And he might never, you know. No, he probably
- 47:02won't. We'll probably never see another Nicolas
- 47:05Cage directed piece. And it's too bad. Yeah,
- 47:08because it really is not bad. And, you know,
- 47:11he he managed to get a crew together and like
- 47:14good actors and like James Franco aside, you
- 47:18know, he was a hot commodity at that point. Like
- 47:21the people he surrounded himself with were artists
- 47:24with a vision that seemed to jive with what he
- 47:27was doing. And it fucking worked like it's way,
- 47:30way better and way prettier and way more put
- 47:33together than I ever thought that this was going
- 47:35to be going into this. at a time where like his
- 47:39like a -list stardom was waning as well like
- 47:43this would have been a great transition if this
- 47:45would have if this would have worked out yeah
- 47:47um in retrospect kind of glad it didn't because
- 47:49now we have like pig and mandy and joe but totally
- 47:53you know imagine a world where like nick cage
- 47:55kept making movies kept like directing what it
- 48:01wait in what way like just remained an a -lister
- 48:05forever Oh, sure, sure. No, I think Sean meant
- 48:08more, like, if he had the chance to become a
- 48:10director instead of... Like, if this movie would
- 48:13have hit, would he have, like, pivoted more to
- 48:15behind -the -scenes work? Right. I think he's
- 48:19always been a movie star. Yeah. Like, he's always
- 48:22described himself as a movie star. So, like,
- 48:25dipping his toes in here and there, probably.
- 48:27But, yeah, I mean, like, to your point, though,
- 48:30like, that would be crazy to lose Nicolas Cage
- 48:33as an actor. Right. Or just at least we might
- 48:37have gotten less. I mean, certainly season one
- 48:39and season two would be different. Yeah. All
- 48:42right. Well, let's just do the grid because we
- 48:46have to. Good movie, good cage, bad movie, bad
- 48:50cage, good, bad, bad, good. Yeah. Where do you
- 48:53put this one? All my critiques of the movie aside,
- 48:56it's well made. It's the people who make it care
- 48:59what they're doing. It's like that comes through
- 49:03very well. And that. means a lot as you know
- 49:06for me it's not boring um it just you know is
- 49:10missing some could have used an edit uh i think
- 49:13the movie was over edited yeah or got over edited
- 49:17there's an editing issue i think the movie itself
- 49:21is pretty good nick cage is the worst part of
- 49:25this film yes yeah as an actor right right nick
- 49:30what do you think uh i totally agree for once
- 49:34um i hate to put that on right on record but
- 49:39yeah uh nicholas cage is a we got a bad performance
- 49:42in a movie that is structurally sound yeah so
- 49:47it's a good film if you're interested in character
- 49:53work that doesn't have a lot of like action to
- 49:58it it's pretty solid film yeah i agree So next
- 50:03episode, we've got the ant bully, which I'm sure
- 50:07is going to be a very, very different vibe. I
- 50:09can't wait to hear how many times they say whore.
- 50:12Oh, so many. You're just an ant whore. Yeah.
- 50:15Well, you're a whore, ant. There's probably like
- 50:17a special ant word for whore. We're going to
- 50:22pick it up. We're going to find out. Yeah. Yeah.
- 50:24He plays like a wizard. I don't know. I think
- 50:26he shrinks a boy. That sounds bad. So bad. Wait,
- 50:30he's not the titular ant bully? Well, so the
- 50:33ant bully, the main character is a turd to ants
- 50:38in his yard because he is being bullied by a
- 50:41human bully. And then he's projecting. So he's
- 50:44like the destroyer of their world. So the ants
- 50:47do magic and shrink him. So then it's a honey,
- 50:51I shrunk the kid situation. Nice. And I think
- 50:53the antagonist is a person hired to kill ants
- 50:56in the yard. Mm hmm. Like or exterminator. Or
- 51:02Orkin? An Orkin. Yeah. Okay. John Orkin. Well,
- 51:06I can't remember. What's that? An Orkin man.
- 51:08Yeah, an Orkin man. Okay. So I think that's it.
- 51:12But yeah, Nick Cage is the wizard who shrinks
- 51:14the boy. His name is like Zok or Zog or I don't
- 51:20know. Fucking ant shit. Ant shit. Yeah. Whatever
- 51:23the racist or. you know misogynistic word for
- 51:27racist against ants i guess it's speciesist speciesist
- 51:32i can't wait to get speciesist on something fuck
- 51:36them grasshoppers yeah fucking hoppers oh god
- 51:39i don't like that at all this already feels dangerous
- 51:44all right thank you all for listening thank you

- 52:02it. Come back for the ant bully and figure out
- 52:04what ant racism is. Speciesism. Speciesism. Spisms.
- 52:13I don't like it. I don't like it at all. Yeah.
