- 0:00Have you ever noticed that when life feels overwhelming,
- 0:03our first instinct is to add something?
- 0:06A new planner, a routine, a new app, a new goal.
- 0:10Maybe it's a new commitment. And we're just thinking that if
- 0:14we can get a better system, then life will finally feel manageable
- 0:18again, right? But what if the answer isn't adding more? What if the
- 0:21answer is simplifying? Because every time I simplify
- 0:25something in my own life, I notice the same thing happens.
- 0:30I breathe a little bit deeper and my shoulders start to relax and
- 0:34my mind feels less clutter and I have more peace.
- 0:38And ironically, I usually accomplish more because
- 0:41my energy isn't scattered in 10 different directions.
- 0:45So today I want to talk about adopting a simpler lifestyle,
- 0:49not because less is always better, but because making room for
- 0:52what matters most brings us peace.
- 0:57If you're tired of people pleasing, caring too much,
- 1:00and wondering why peace still feels so hard to hold onto,
- 1:05you're in the right place. Hi, I'm Lori, mom,
- 1:08former people pleaser, and your boundaries coach. Here we talk
- 1:12about how to protect your peace, set healthier boundaries, and get
- 1:16clear on what actually matters so that you can build a life that
- 1:20feels lighter, calmer, and more satisfying.
- 1:23So let's stop the chaos for a minute, moms, catch our breath, and get into
- 1:28this next episode.
- 1:32Hey friend, welcome back to Healthy Boundaries for Moms. I am your host,
- 1:35Lori Grimes, and I am so glad to be back and recording with
- 1:39you guys. I know we had this little unexpected break last week
- 1:44because there were some technical difficulties that I had to get figured
- 1:47out, but we're back and I'm excited to spend a little time with you today.
- 1:52So over the last couple weeks, one word has just
- 1:55kept coming to my mind: simplicity.
- 1:59It is something that I realized that whenever life
- 2:03starts to feel like chaotic or stressed,
- 2:07overwhelming, the thing that brings me the most relief isn't
- 2:12finding another life hack, it's simplifying.
- 2:16I think our brains And our bodies, and especially our minds and
- 2:20our souls, they're all just looking for a chance
- 2:23to exhale. You know, to drop our shoulders,
- 2:28to slow down, and to know where to place our attention.
- 2:32Because when everything feels important, it's hard to
- 2:35know what actually is deserving of our energy and
- 2:39our attention. So Jesus speaks directly to this
- 2:42in Luke chapter 10. 41-42. And it says,
- 2:46but the Lord answered her, Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset
- 2:50about many things, but few things are needed, or indeed only
- 2:54one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will
- 2:58not be taken away from her. So I love how gentle Jesus
- 3:03is with Martha. He doesn't go right to shaming her.
- 3:07He doesn't start to tell her how she's failing. He's just
- 3:10pointing out that she's carrying many things when only a
- 3:15few things are really needed. And I love that there's only
- 3:18a few things that are needed. And I wonder how often we
- 3:23are like Martha. We're not doing bad things per se,
- 3:26we're just doing too many good things. And sometimes we've complicated
- 3:31what God intended to be simple. So lately
- 3:35I've also been thinking a lot about the minimalist lifestyle. So I don't
- 3:39know if you've heard of this lifestyle. But before you tune me out, I'm not
- 3:43saying we all need to own like 10 things or live in
- 3:47some perfectly white and black house and
- 3:50we have like one coffee mug. That's not what I
- 3:53mean. What I'm talking about is adopting the principles of a
- 3:58simpler life. Maybe that means just owning fewer things because
- 4:02less clutter creates more peace in our minds.
- 4:06And maybe it's about simplifying your schedule, your routines,
- 4:10or your finances, maybe even your commitments,
- 4:14or just how your home is set up. Maybe it's your health plan,
- 4:18or even the expectations you've put on yourself.
- 4:21Minimalism at its heart is just asking one simple question: is
- 4:26this adding value to my life, or is simply— is this
- 4:29simply just adding weight? Because every possession would requires
- 4:34a little bit of our attention, right? It requires us
- 4:37to clean it or find a place for it, take care of it.
- 4:41Every commitment is asking for some of our time, right? So every time
- 4:44we say yes, we have to say no somewhere else.
- 4:48And every unfinished project occupies our mental space.
- 4:52I mean, have you ever started a project and then it's just weighing on you
- 4:56every time you think about it because you're like, oh, I have to get that
- 4:59done? And every unrealistic expectation is
- 5:03stealing from our peace, like it's eating
- 5:07away at our peace. And little by little, all those things become heavy.
- 5:11And maybe that's why simplifying starts to feel like such
- 5:15a relief. It's like taking this weight off our shoulders.
- 5:18It's giving our minds and our bodies and our souls permission to
- 5:22breathe again. So I think simplifying our lives
- 5:26starts even deeper than just say cleaning out a closet?
- 5:30I think it starts with our contentment because if
- 5:34we're always chasing the next thing, we'll just never feel like what
- 5:39we have is enough. We'll always want something more.
- 5:42We're always going to want more money or possessions, maybe more
- 5:46experiences, more vacations, or a bigger house, a better car,
- 5:50a better job, maybe more fun activities or accomplishments.
- 5:55We may even be looking to be more productive. But the problem is,
- 6:00is there's just always going to be another more,
- 6:03right? Like the finish line just keeps moving on us.
- 6:07And that's why Jesus gives us this warning.
- 6:10In Luke 12:15 it says, then he said to them,
- 6:13watch out, be on your guard against all kinds of greed.
- 6:17Life does not consist abundance of
- 6:22possessions. So Jesus isn't saying possessions are wrong.
- 6:25He's just reminding us that life isn't measured by what we
- 6:29own or have. Our joy isn't found in accumulating
- 6:33more. Our peace is definitely not found in having
- 6:38the newest or the best thing out there. So then
- 6:42listen to what the writer of Hebrews says. So Hebrews 13:5
- 6:46says, Keep your lives free from the love of money and
- 6:50be content with what you have, because God
- 6:54has said, never will I leave you,
- 6:57never will I forsake you. So I love that connection. Being content
- 7:02is because God is with you, with us.
- 7:05Our contentment isn't rooted in finally getting that thing
- 7:10we've wanted. It's rooted in knowing the one who
- 7:14never leaves us. So when we stop chasing more,
- 7:17we get to enter into enjoying what we already have,
- 7:21and we notice the blessings that we've been overlooking.
- 7:25We become better stewards of what's sitting right
- 7:29in front of us, and we trade comparison for
- 7:32gratitude, and that creates peace in our lives. So there's
- 7:37another verse that has really challenged me. So Hebrews
- 7:4012:1 says, therefore, since we are surrounded
- 7:44by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off
- 7:48everything that hinders and the sin
- 7:52that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance
- 7:56the race marked out for us. Notice it doesn't just say to throw off
- 8:00sin. It also says to throw off everything that hinders.
- 8:04So some things aren't sinful, they're just heavy
- 8:08and they are distracting us and they no longer are serving
- 8:12and this current season of life. So maybe one of
- 8:16the most spiritual things we can do is ask, what am I carrying that
- 8:20God never asked me to carry? I say that one a lot in this podcast
- 8:24because I think it's a question that continually comes
- 8:27up that we need to be checking ourselves daily and weekly.
- 8:32So this week I want to challenge you to simplify one area
- 8:35of your life. Maybe it's cleaning out one drawer,
- 8:38or maybe it's just saying no to one commitment that
- 8:42you think you want to make. Maybe it's deleting apps you don't need or
- 8:46choosing one simple meal plan for the week. Maybe it's just turning off your
- 8:50notifications and clearing out some space mentally for you.
- 8:54Or maybe it's spending less time scrolling and more
- 8:57time sitting on the back porch with a cup of coffee or iced
- 9:01tea, something that is relaxing. Or maybe it's just letting go
- 9:05of one unrealistic expectation that you've placed
- 9:08on yourself. Ask yourself, what is adding value to
- 9:13my life and what is just adding weight?
- 9:16So friend, I don't want you to think that peace comes from finally knocking
- 9:21everything off your to-do list. I think peace is coming from knowing
- 9:25what doesn't need to be done. I don't think joy comes
- 9:29from always having more or attaining more, getting more.
- 9:33I think joy grows when we are learning to be content
- 9:37with what God has already entrusted to us. And contentment
- 9:42is what leads to simplicity, and simplicity is
- 9:45what is creating the margin in your life. And then margin allows
- 9:50us to be present in our lives. And when we are present,
- 9:54we begin to notice the peace that has been there
- 9:58all along and is available to us. So my prayer for
- 10:01you this week is that you'll find that one area of your life to simplify,
- 10:05not so you can do more, but just so that you can live more intentionally
- 10:09and more peacefully and more gratefully and the
- 10:13more fully present with the people and the purpose God
- 10:16has given you. So I hope this episode has inspired you to
- 10:20try out this minimalist mindset and that
- 10:24maybe it will help you to simplify some things and to
- 10:27really find some contentment and joy in your life.
