Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, hey, Emily, here you are listening to five Friday
- 0:24Speaker 1: Unhurdle coming to you from Osaka. I got here on Wednesday,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and I really I'm into it. We went to this
- 0:34Speaker 1: pizza spot that I found on the social somewhere for
- 0:38Speaker 1: dinner on Wednesday night, and it was absolutely unreal. And
- 0:42Speaker 1: in the surrounding area there are all these, I want
- 0:45Speaker 1: to say, between ten and fifteen seat restaurants, like super
- 0:49Speaker 1: small from what I've seen so far, and I haven't
- 0:52Speaker 1: seen a ton granted, but this is a place that
- 0:55Speaker 1: if you're a foodie you would absolutely love to to.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I digress. We got here on Wednesday. I've been in
- 1:05Speaker 1: Japan for something like eleven days now. If my math
- 1:08Speaker 1: serves me right, it's it's been so great. And also
- 1:13Speaker 1: it's a lot. And I say that with a sensitivity
- 1:16Speaker 1: to this concept that I'm truly living a life that
- 1:20Speaker 1: my younger self didn't even dream of, Like this is
- 1:23Speaker 1: more than I ever could have imagined. What an unbelievable
- 1:28Speaker 1: opportunity that I get to travel to work like this,
- 1:34Speaker 1: that I get to come halfway around the globe to
- 1:38Speaker 1: have important conversations and highlight athletic amazingness and create things
- 1:46Speaker 1: and art and.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Products that I'm really excited about. It's so awesome.
- 1:52Speaker 1: And amidst all of this awesomeness, I have admittedly been
- 1:57Speaker 1: struggling a little bit. I'm dealing with a naste cold
- 2:00Speaker 1: right now, which isn't super fun, but we're working through it.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I'm sure you can hear it in my voice.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And I've also had to do a lot of shifting
- 2:09Speaker 1: around of the fitness slash wellness routine and habits, as
- 2:14Speaker 1: they talked about in last week's episode. In Tokyo God,
- 2:18Speaker 1: it was like above ninety degrees and ninety percent humidity
- 2:22Speaker 1: every day that we were there, and so that required
- 2:25Speaker 1: a lot of finagling of schedules. And even though I
- 2:29Speaker 1: characteristically am an early morning workout person, that wasn't always
- 2:34Speaker 1: an option. I wasn't getting really good sleep. If I
- 2:37Speaker 1: was sleeping in the morning, I wasn't going to ruin that. Also,
- 2:40Speaker 1: I'm in Japan, which means I have the opportunity to
- 2:43Speaker 1: meet up with friends that are traveling also here doing
- 2:47Speaker 1: a lot of work within the same space that I'm in,
- 2:50Speaker 1: and I want to do it all. But the thing
- 2:53Speaker 1: is is that the all or nothing thinking, it doesn't
- 2:57Speaker 1: necessarily work here like I have to do the best
- 3:01Speaker 1: I can with what I have, which means that if
- 3:04Speaker 1: I'm gonna miss a workout or I'm going to eat
- 3:07Speaker 1: and quote unquote unhealthy meal, that doesn't need to derail
- 3:12Speaker 1: my entire journey. There have been so many times in
- 3:17Speaker 1: my life where I've been so hard on myself about
- 3:21Speaker 1: having to deviate from the plan.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I am someone who loves habits.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I love journaling, I love breathwork, I love running first
- 3:28Speaker 1: thing in the morning. I love lifting weights. But every
- 3:32Speaker 1: now and then, something's got to give. And so this trip,
- 3:35Speaker 1: one of the things that had to give is I
- 3:37Speaker 1: haven't lifted a weight in eleven days.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I did message my Future trainer.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I use this app called Future to do my strength training,
- 3:46Speaker 1: and I work directly with the trainer one on one there.
- 3:48Speaker 1: If you're interested in getting in on that, I do
- 3:51Speaker 1: have an opportunity to give you fifty percent off your
- 3:54Speaker 1: first month of training.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I'm going to link that in the show notes.
- 3:56Speaker 1: But I said to him, I was like, listen, fitting
- 4:00Speaker 1: in my runs is going to be enough of a
- 4:03Speaker 1: challenge for me over the next two weeks.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I'm not going to stress about getting to a gym and.
- 4:08Speaker 1: That was it, And for the first time in a
- 4:11Speaker 1: long time, I didn't really feel any guilt over that, because,
- 4:15Speaker 1: like I said, I'm truly doing the best I can
- 4:18Speaker 1: with what I have. I'm not going to travel to
- 4:22Speaker 1: Japan and not experience the things. I'm not gonna not
- 4:26Speaker 1: be at a record bar until two am for a
- 4:30Speaker 1: night or two. I'm not I'm not gonna not I'm
- 4:34Speaker 1: not gonna skip out trying the delicacies. I use that
- 4:38Speaker 1: word very strategically at McDonald's. I'm not gonna not go
- 4:43Speaker 1: and have the stack of super fluffy pancakes that look
- 4:47Speaker 1: like they are from an alternate universe. All these things
- 4:50Speaker 1: are going to happen, and I'm still going to do
- 4:53Speaker 1: the best I can to feel good in my body.
- 4:55Speaker 2: So what does this look like in practice?
- 4:57Speaker 1: It looked like me going for a six mile run
- 5:01Speaker 1: this morning when I woke up in Osaka. It looks
- 5:04Speaker 1: like me planning my day tomorrow around making sure I
- 5:10Speaker 1: get the things I need, Like I'm gonna need to
- 5:12Speaker 1: find some sort of a running store out here to
- 5:14Speaker 1: find a gel.
- 5:15Speaker 2: For my long run on Sunday.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna get to bed early, and I'm gonna accommodate
- 5:20Speaker 1: that plan because that's something that's important to me. There's
- 5:22Speaker 1: gonna be a give and take, and so if you
- 5:26Speaker 1: have an all or nothing mentality, I can promise you
- 5:29Speaker 1: that's not gonna serve you in the long run.
- 5:32Speaker 2: We only get to do this once.
- 5:34Speaker 1: And like I said, I love my habits, and for
- 5:37Speaker 1: a long time I let my habits completely.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Rule my day to day.
- 5:43Speaker 1: And what I realized in that is that sometimes I
- 5:46Speaker 1: was missing out on the little joys, the small joys.
- 5:50Speaker 1: And we are surrounded, all of us by this highlight
- 5:53Speaker 1: reel that is social media. I am inundated with folks
- 5:56Speaker 1: that appear to never deviate from the routine. But I
- 5:59Speaker 1: can say to you and promise you that that is
- 6:03Speaker 1: not necessarily a healthy way to be. And so this
- 6:07Speaker 1: feels a little bit rambly, but I'm here to tell
- 6:10Speaker 1: you it's okay not to be perfect. It's okay to
- 6:13Speaker 1: live in the moment. It's okay to indulge every once
- 6:17Speaker 1: in a while, and it's definitely okay to do the
- 6:20Speaker 1: best with what you have, do a gut check, do
- 6:24Speaker 1: what feels good, and somedays, what feels good on that
- 6:28Speaker 1: particular day is going to feel different than what feels
- 6:31Speaker 1: good the next day. Have grace with yourself because, just
- 6:35Speaker 1: like your grit, your will, your determination, that self compassion
- 6:40Speaker 1: is something that grows over time when you allow yourself
- 6:44Speaker 1: to have it. My question for you this week where
- 6:47Speaker 1: can you offer a little bit more grace with yourself?
- 6:50Speaker 1: Understanding that all or nothing just isn't going to serve you.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Where can you offer a little grace with yourself?
- 7:00Speaker 2: Now?
- 7:01Speaker 1: A listener question, Emily. I always enjoy listening to your
- 7:05Speaker 1: show and love five minute Fridays. I recently signed up
- 7:07Speaker 1: for a five k that is at the end of October.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Halloween costumes are highly encouraged. My question is have you
- 7:13Speaker 1: ever done a costume run and do you have any
- 7:16Speaker 1: costume suggestions. It's been a while since I did a
- 7:19Speaker 1: race and I don't want to run in anything uncomfortable,
- 7:21Speaker 1: but would like to wear a fun and unique costume.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Do you have any suggestions or tips for running in
- 7:28Speaker 1: a costume? Thanks so much, Amanda from Virginia. Amanda, this
- 7:33Speaker 1: question is epic. I hate to be the person to
- 7:36Speaker 1: tell you this. I've never done a costume run. I'm
- 7:39Speaker 1: really trying to think about it. I dated someone in
- 7:42Speaker 1: college who once ran a turkey trot in a turkey costume.
- 7:47Speaker 1: I did not, though the feedback I got from that
- 7:50Speaker 1: experience was that it was hot inside of the costume.
- 7:53Speaker 2: So I would say to answer your question, lean into accessories.
- 7:59Speaker 1: So maybe it's some sort of like a fine headband
- 8:02Speaker 1: or a sparkly belt, or I know a lot of
- 8:04Speaker 1: women that love to run in some sort of a
- 8:06Speaker 1: tou tou. But if you're gonna go for like a
- 8:08Speaker 1: whole shebang, maybe like something that's made of felt and
- 8:11Speaker 1: a whole body step into situation with a zipper.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Just that's not the move.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I would think A functional costume could be something like
- 8:21Speaker 1: maybe going, oh, I like this the root of legends
- 8:24Speaker 1: of the Hidden Temple, or like you're a contestant on
- 8:28Speaker 1: a game show like that, So what about what's the
- 8:32Speaker 1: one with the slime double dare? That could be fun,
- 8:37Speaker 1: Or you could be wear's walda. You could just wear
- 8:39Speaker 1: a striped shirt and some glasses. That's also an easy one,
- 8:43Speaker 1: black Cat. These costume suggestions not necessarily breaking the bank,
- 8:48Speaker 1: but also maybe not my best work. But you get
- 8:51Speaker 1: the drift here. Do something that's successible. Make sure you're
- 8:54Speaker 1: still wearing technically smart clothing that will be very helpful
- 8:58Speaker 1: for you on your pursuit of excellence in your five K.
- 9:02Speaker 1: And the most important part of this is you better
- 9:05Speaker 1: email me with a.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Photo after this is all said and done.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I'm also interested to hear what you guys would wear
- 9:11Speaker 1: on your costume run, so feel free to send me
- 9:14Speaker 1: a note over on Instagram.
