- 0:27This recording is not suitable for those with epilepsy or
- 0:30severe mental health issues, so get yourself comfortable and
- 0:34enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:42Hi, it's Adam here. And in today's episode of The
- 0:45Hypnotist, you're going to be listening to a hypnosis session
- 0:49that is designed to work with what's known as a disassociated
- 0:54part. Now, that sounds complex, but it
- 0:57really isn't. A lot of people will
- 0:59occasionally feel a sense of not fully being in control, that
- 1:05they will have these things. And sometimes that might be a
- 1:07blackout or it might be time distortion, but they just think
- 1:11that where did that come from or how did that happen?
- 1:14And it's because a different part of them was in control for
- 1:18a period of time. And one of the things that is
- 1:22known as a dissociative disorder is binge eating and binge
- 1:28eating. A lot of people that have binges
- 1:31will say that once they're in a binge, they lose track of time.
- 1:35They're not really paying attention to the taste.
- 1:37And that when everything's finished, it almost feels like
- 1:41they return to their body and have to clear up the mess that
- 1:45has been created from the part that was responsible for the
- 1:48binge. And that's often why people that
- 1:52binge sometimes become bulimic. The purge is an attempt to
- 1:58mitigate the consequences of the binge so that they don't have
- 2:02the consequences of those excess calories, for example.
- 2:06It's not a healthy thing to do, but it's an understandable thing
- 2:10to do. They're trying to clear up the
- 2:11mess of a different part of them.
- 2:14And I was working with a client that in their teenage years and
- 2:17and as a young adult had a lot of occasions of binging followed
- 2:23by a purge and. It would.
- 2:27You know, they were over most of it in all honesty, but the
- 2:29thoughts were still there. That nigging or nagging thought
- 2:35of oh, but you could just do this, you know, nobody would
- 2:37know you can do this. It will make you feel better.
- 2:40And what was interesting is that I knew it was disassociated
- 2:44because the inner dialogue was not stated in the first person
- 2:48like I, I could do this. It was stated in the third
- 2:51person you. So you could do this.
- 2:56Being a therapist, as long as I have, I tend to pay attention to
- 2:58my intuition and intuitively A metaphor popped into my head.
- 3:04And in the genre of vampire movies, there is this law, this
- 3:10almost kind of element that is just an expectation of this
- 3:15genre, and that is that a vampire cannot go into your home
- 3:21unless it has an invitation. And when it gets in your home,
- 3:25quite often it has very sinister motives.
- 3:29But the threshold is the is the doorway and it can only get in
- 3:35with an invitation. And the language that this
- 3:38disassociated part was using was to influence it was trying to
- 3:43gain access to control to then have the binge.
- 3:46So you know, you're bored. There's nothing, nothing you
- 3:49need to do. Nobody would know.
- 3:51And it was almost like this charming, sinister voice that
- 3:55had an agenda. So what you're going to hear in
- 3:58this is a metaphor of that, that part that has quite possibly a
- 4:04good intention, but negative consequences of that good
- 4:08intention, perceiving it to be like a vampire, parasitic,
- 4:12taking, seeking gratification, not being responsible for any
- 4:19consequences. It does map over quite nicely
- 4:22with this metaphor of a of a vampire.
- 4:25There's another metaphor going on here and the client was
- 4:29talking about how it feels to have this going on.
- 4:32They said it's like, it's like going over a tightrope on a huge
- 4:36Canyon. And this idea of still being
- 4:40attached to the binging is almost like a safety cord.
- 4:45So you can hear that as part of the induction as well.
- 4:48And I've had a few people literally say to me, I mean,
- 4:52I've, I've published close to 2000 hypnosis sessions that
- 4:56they've said, Adam, why would it make sense to work with you
- 4:59directly given that you publish so many of your hypnotherapy
- 5:04sessions that surely there will be something out there relevant
- 5:08to everyone and they don't need to work with you directly.
- 5:12And there is an element of truth to that.
- 5:15You know, I have published so many things.
- 5:17So you probably are going to find something pretty close to
- 5:20what would be helpful for you for completely free just looking
- 5:23at my published recordings. But my response is that the
- 5:28variable that is always changing is the individual client in
- 5:33front of me. They're going to have unique
- 5:36experiences, memories. They're going to have unique
- 5:39belief systems and coping strategies.
- 5:41And that's why when you listen to my podcasts, you can hear
- 5:44some things that just seem a little bit odd or strange.
- 5:48And it's strange to you because you're not the client that I was
- 5:51working with, but the actual client I was working with.
- 5:54It hits the mark perfectly because I spend so much time
- 5:58eliciting what is going to be the right metaphor, the right
- 6:03context, the right suggestions for that client.
- 6:07So listening to a session about a metaphorical vampire and
- 6:11crossing a Canyon, I seem a bit strange.
- 6:15But metaphorically it works. And that's why I do this little
- 6:19pre talk before you hear the session, to give it some
- 6:22context. Otherwise it's just bizarre.
- 6:25There is no actual vampire. The vampire is just a
- 6:27representation and metaphorical representation of a different
- 6:32part of their inner dialogue that happens to be
- 6:34disassociated. But once you give it that
- 6:37metaphor, then the goal is to not let the vampire in, not not
- 6:41invite it. See it?
- 6:43For what it is naturally, challenge it to come up with a
- 6:45better way of meeting that intention.
- 6:47And what it does is it gives the client that I'm working with a
- 6:52way to not feel that they're on the receiving end of a barrage
- 6:56of intrusive thoughts. And the only way they can make
- 6:58those thoughts go away is to binge eat is to give them a
- 7:02different strategy that will work even better than doing a
- 7:06binge because it doesn't reward that intrusive thought.
- 7:10So hopefully that makes sense. And if you do like the idea of a
- 7:13really bespoke session entirely customized for you, the way that
- 7:17that would happen is you would look in the show notes.
- 7:20There's normally a link there that would take you to book a 30
- 7:24minute consultation call with me or you can visit my website
- 7:27whichisadamcox.co.uk and on that website you can also click a
- 7:31link to book a free consultation call and we'll have a chat and
- 7:34you'll see if I'm the right hypnotherapist for you.
- 7:38For now though, you might get some value from this session.
- 7:40So find a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be
- 7:43disturbed. Relax and enjoy the session.
- 8:17Yeah. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 8:55you breathe in, breathe in. Slow, long, deep breath.
- 9:03And as you exhale, feel that you're releasing any tension
- 9:08around your eyelids and around your eyes.
- 9:13And as you breathe out, feel that tension leaving your body,
- 9:20breathing in, relaxation and exhaling.
- 9:27Any tension I. Want you to scan your body for
- 9:35any clues of tension, maybe your neck or your shoulders, your jaw
- 9:41or your forehead. And as you breathe in that
- 9:45relaxation, allow that tension to melt away and you can loosen
- 9:53your jaw, feel your neck and your shoulders releasing that
- 9:57tension. And maybe you notice that you're
- 10:03breathing deeper and longer. And the deeper you breathe, the
- 10:10more relaxed you become. And the more relaxed you become,
- 10:16the deeper you breathe. And as your body relaxes, your
- 10:22imagination awakens. And I want you to imagine a vast
- 10:35Canyon, maybe the Grand Canyon or some other place in the
- 10:42world. Even if it's just your
- 10:44imagination, Imagine. It's so deep, a kilometer, a
- 10:53mile, maybe far, far deep down there's a river, maybe it's a
- 11:00rocky Canyon. And I want you to imagine there
- 11:06is a tightrope. I want you to imagine that
- 11:10tightrope and feel. Then you have a task to cross
- 11:19the Canyon on the tightrope. I want you to imagine you have
- 11:25that balance, and I want you to see a safety cord attached to
- 11:31you and the tightrope. And maybe you feel that if you
- 11:39were to fall, this safety cord would be the only thing to stop
- 11:44you plummeting to your death. As you start to walk, you might
- 11:53get a sense that you have to be in full concentration all the
- 11:57time. You have to be careful.
- 12:02You have to be aware of winds and breezes, the tensile
- 12:08strength of the tightrope. And we need to get a real sense
- 12:16of how exhausting, how precarious this all feels, but
- 12:23also how reliant you are on that safety cord.
- 12:35But there are positives. The sky is clear, the air is
- 12:40still, and the Canyon looks magnificently beautiful.
- 12:52So imagine stepping forward, realizing you are wearing that
- 12:57harness, that it has the function of protecting you, of
- 13:02keeping you safe. And each step you take slow and
- 13:10deliberate. Maybe you can feel that wobble
- 13:14beneath your feet. Maybe there's a part of your
- 13:19mind that used to fear falling whispers.
- 13:25What if you fall? Some people call fear the
- 13:37acronym FEAR False Evidence that Appears real.
- 13:44I wonder if you can re evaluate this Canyon and glance down and
- 13:49see the truth. What if this Canyon isn't a
- 13:54Canyon at all? It's not so deep and not so
- 13:59scary. In fact, it's shallow just a few
- 14:04feet down, and not jagged rocks at the bottom, but a bed of soft
- 14:11Moss. And you realize even if you did
- 14:17fall, you'd be OK. And you know that's true.
- 14:25Everything you've gone through gives you evidence.
- 14:28Then you can fall and be OK. What if you've been attached to
- 14:37a safety harness that you never needed?
- 14:39And what if that safety harness was holding you back rather than
- 14:47keeping you? Safe.
- 14:52What is? Protection for one becomes a
- 14:54prison for someone else. So think of that safety cord and
- 15:04maybe it is helpful only if the Canyon is real.
- 15:12I want you to get a sense then. All of this is based on
- 15:17perceptions, the tightrope being narrow and the Canyon being
- 15:23deep. Imagine going back to the Canyon
- 15:27and seeing it shallow and seeing the tightrope turn into a large,
- 15:33steady, stable bridge. This shallow area with soft Moss
- 15:42and a strong sturdy bridge, now wearing a safety harness would
- 15:50simply be an inconvenience. If you could imagine how strange
- 15:57it would be to wear a safety harness crossing a bridge over
- 16:02something very shallow, Let me know by nodding your head.
- 16:10Even if it's windy, you don't need the safety harness.
- 16:15And even if the Canyon was there, if the bridge is strong,
- 16:18you don't need the safety harness.
- 16:24You realize now that you have many ways to feel safe, stable
- 16:29and. Secure and.
- 16:35The more you believe that and think about it, the truer it.
- 16:40Becomes I want. You to imagine you walk now not
- 16:49with fear but with calm confidence.
- 16:55And with each step you go deeper and deeper still.
- 17:00Every step across the bridge takes you deeper into that place
- 17:04within your mind of powerful, profound changes, and you can
- 17:12allow the conscious mind to rest now, like clouds drifting from
- 17:17the sun. And as the surface quiets, the
- 17:24real work can begin in your mind.
- 17:30Now you find yourself standing at the entrance to a beautiful
- 17:34home, an imaginary home. But you know it as your home,
- 17:41safe and yours. Consider the doorway in the
- 17:47walls as a natural boundary. Everything in the home is yours,
- 17:54and everything outside of it isn't.
- 18:00And just outside that home, just beyond the threshold, is a
- 18:05figure. And they wear a charming smile.
- 18:12Eyes glean with fake promises. I want you to see someone
- 18:17looking slick, tenacious, confident, a false friend, a
- 18:28vampire. Hear them saying things like you
- 18:37can do this. It will help you.
- 18:43You're going through a lot. This will make things better.
- 18:48Charming and sneaky. They want you not to do what you
- 18:55want to do, but what they want you to do.
- 19:07Perhaps you already see them now, in this new way.
- 19:12This part was never a friend, never a helper.
- 19:17It's like a vampire, polished, persuasive, pretending to help.
- 19:24But like all vampires, it needs an invitation.
- 19:31It cannot enter your home without your permission, Just
- 19:37like an inner dialogue then can't make you binge.
- 19:42But it's tenaciously, tenaciously trying to get you to
- 19:45binge. And think of the vampire in
- 19:48this. Way but.
- 19:53Now you smile, because you finally see it clearly.
- 19:59This part isn't a monster. It's clever, it's cunning, but
- 20:06it's also misguided. It's been using old strategies
- 20:12that perhaps once or twice even were helpful, but it's stuck in
- 20:17that past and now you are the one at the door.
- 20:26You stand tall and maybe you say to this vampire, I see you and I
- 20:37know what you're doing, I'm not afraid of you, but I'm not
- 20:43playing your game anymore. And you can even smirk a little
- 20:49as you say, because it feels good to reclaim your authority.
- 20:57This part was always meant to work for you, but instead it's
- 21:02been manipulating you. But not anymore.
- 21:07And you can challenge that part directly if you really want to
- 21:15help, if you truly care, if you actually want to protect or make
- 21:22me feel better and come up with something better, something
- 21:28elegant, something that lifts me up instead of dragging me down.
- 21:41And the vampire can see on your face you're not backing down.
- 21:46If they want their intention met, they simply will have to
- 21:51propose a different way, a different idea.
- 21:56But binging? That's off the table.
- 22:01Binging would be rewarding the vampire, inviting the vampire in
- 22:07to be destructive, like a parasite to take from you.
- 22:14But you know this vampire can do better than that.
- 22:19It can use its intelligence and tenacity to come up with
- 22:24something that enriches your life, that helps with heavy
- 22:28emotions, that helps with difficult times, that enriches
- 22:35your life rather than keeps you stuck in a.
- 22:39Loop your refusal. To back down is noticed by the
- 22:51vampire, and that vampire begins to change.
- 23:00The charm drops, the illusion fades, the fangs disappear and
- 23:08in its place you see something more honest, a confused part of
- 23:13you that just wants relief, challenging in a playful way to
- 23:23try things. Things that you will actually
- 23:27say yes to from now on. Anytime that old, charming,
- 23:36tenacious voice tries to sell you something, tell you
- 23:42something in its interest and not yours, you'll pause and
- 23:48you'll know. You hold the key, you make the
- 23:57call. You're not at the mercy.
- 24:01Of those urges. You're the one behind the wheel,
- 24:07you're driving the bus. This part is just a passenger,
- 24:12and you drive to your destination, not the destination
- 24:17that this part wants you to go to, because you've been to that
- 24:21place before, you didn't like him, and you don't want to
- 24:26return there. And if that part speaks up again
- 24:32in that way, it will be met with that assertive presence in you.
- 24:39Not with fear, not with fight, but with leadership.
- 24:45You are in charge of your destiny, and it will know.
- 24:57The only way forward is to actually be helpful, to speak in
- 25:03your language. Elegant, helpful, kind.
- 25:12I want you to travel through time days from now, weeks from
- 25:16now, and imagine that part coming up.
- 25:22Maybe you're bored or overwhelmed, but imagine that
- 25:26voice. You now see it for what it is,
- 25:32and the harder it tries to influence you, the more you
- 25:38challenge back. And if it doesn't respond to
- 25:42your playful approach, it will respond to your assertive
- 25:47approach. But either way, you're not
- 25:50backing down. You're not rewarding the
- 25:54parasite to take more than it gives.
- 25:59So imagine that. Now imagine that voice right now
- 26:03urging you, encouraging you, influencing you, and start to
- 26:12practice how you will respond to that part with a smile, with
- 26:20confidence. Come on, I'm not playing this
- 26:25game. Tell that part to come up with
- 26:31something better. Or just imagine closing the door
- 26:38on that part, turning the volume down and it can keep knocking on
- 26:44the door, but that doesn't mean you have to open.
- 26:46It unless. You give this part an
- 26:51invitation. It has no power over.
- 26:55You hear it say you could binge. Do it, No one will know.
- 27:09And just imagine your response. That's old.
- 27:18I don't do that. Now you can find a better way,
- 27:24and you do because there are so many better ways.
- 27:30A walk, a conversation with someone you know, a breath,
- 27:36music, movement, rest, good book, creativity.
- 27:47Your mind is finding new answers now, not as an effort, but as a
- 27:54habit, a path well walked. And if your unconscious now
- 28:01feels that you have the tools, do not need the safety harness,
- 28:08that if a vampire comes knocking, you know how to turn
- 28:11them away, let me know by nodding your head and it will
- 28:18knock, but when it does, you'll be ready.
- 28:24Forewarned is forearmed, and don't be surprised if you notice
- 28:33that the more effective your boundaries get with this part,
- 28:38also, the more effective they get with other people in your
- 28:43life that also want to take more than they give to extract from
- 28:49you rather than enrich you just becomes a nice side effect
- 28:57because what changes in the inner world ripples out to the
- 29:03external world. That's just how it happens and
- 29:09you could imagine your life becoming better because you can
- 29:15communicate your true needs, say yes to what you want to and no
- 29:22to what you don't, to introduce boundaries and conversations,
- 29:29but also in commitments. You are in charge of your life.
- 29:37I imagine walking all the way over that bridge to the other
- 29:43side of what once you thought was a Canyon in now is just a
- 29:49shallow space beneath you. And the other side of that
- 29:54bridge is that confident, stronger version of you, more in
- 30:01control of your life. This is your identity now, and
- 30:07you could always walk back over the bridge and have things how
- 30:10they were, but why would you do that when you found a better
- 30:15way? And if this feels like a better
- 30:18way, let me know about nodding your head.
- 30:21That's it. It's time to leave this place.
- 30:25But you leave this place with the new identity activated.
- 30:30The old one can still be there. They're on the tightrope with
- 30:35the harness. None of it was necessary.
- 30:38None of it was real. You have evolved now.
- 30:43New boundaries, new resources, new strategies, and that version
- 30:50can return back to the here and the now.
- 30:53So take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 30:58nose. Just wiggle your fingers and
- 31:01wiggle your toes. Connect and calibrate into the
- 31:03here and the now as I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken
- 31:08you. Starting to count 123 waking up
- 31:14456 more alert 7-8. Open your eyes.
- 31:18Open your eyes 910. Wide awake.
- 31:22Wide awake. Wide awake.
