- 0:01I've heard it said that people can change, but only if they
- 0:04want to. So what would it take for you to
- 0:07try it? Change the way you think, feel,
- 0:10relate and experience situations.
- 0:13For me, I wanted to find the truth and little by little I did
- 0:17become different and old conditionings gone.
- 0:22Then I set a new course. I refer to that as the second
- 0:26clock. Join me, click follow, like and
- 0:29subscribe and let's see where this leads.
- 0:33There was a time when I felt like I was becoming undone,
- 0:37where I didn't recognize my actions, my responses.
- 0:42I didn't recognize the people around me, what I was hearing.
- 0:45Hearing them say. I couldn't believe that things
- 0:48had gotten so uncomfortable, awkward, and overall
- 0:54unacceptable. I'm talking about this now that
- 0:58I'm over it, but because recently I've been hearing a lot
- 1:01of people talking to me and when I hear them, I hear the person
- 1:06coming undone. I hear what it sounds like when
- 1:09it's like they're screaming into a pillow and nobody understands
- 1:12them. So they keep saying it
- 1:15differently, thinking that maybe their messaging is just not
- 1:19being heard. Maybe they're not explaining
- 1:21themselves correctly because what they're going through, it's
- 1:26so undescribable unless you've been through it.
- 1:30I'm talking about mind games. I think at one point or another,
- 1:35we've all been manipulated. We've all been played for as a
- 1:39fool. And for those of us that care,
- 1:42we care too deeply. We hold on too long.
- 1:47And for a few people that I've been listening to lately, I hear
- 1:50it. The hold.
- 1:53The hold that the situation has over them and them holding on,
- 1:57tightening the grip with every attempt.
- 2:01Attempt to make things in their life change.
- 2:04Attempt to make somebody see things differently.
- 2:07Attempt to have other people get on board, see their side, their
- 2:12perspective. It's funny, for most of us, we
- 2:16don't want toxic relationships, but we also don't understand
- 2:20them. We don't understand when we get
- 2:22into them. We don't understand why we don't
- 2:24see them for what they are. And we don't understand why it
- 2:27is that when we are out of them, we're tempted to go back.
- 2:31It's all so confusing. I know I have been in so many of
- 2:36these relationships. They're cyclical.
- 2:39One minute you have a glimpse of what's real, what's not OK, and
- 2:43then another minute you think, I can't imagine life without this
- 2:48person or without this relationship.
- 2:50Maybe I just need to give it one more shot now.
- 2:54For me, I'm lucky it didn't happen with my marriage.
- 2:57My ex, he's awesome. He's just not right for me right
- 3:00now. He was perfect for me when I was
- 3:03younger, when I needed stability, safety, a soft place
- 3:07to land. But now I know myself better.
- 3:11I know what it is that I'm looking for finally.
- 3:15But that came with me realizing that a lot of these toxic
- 3:17relationships that were outside of my marriage, I wasn't seeing
- 3:21them for what they were early enough to get out of them.
- 3:24It only took so many months or years getting distance that I
- 3:28started to see things clearly. So whenever I hear somebody
- 3:31that's in it, invested in things changing things, being what the
- 3:37ideal dream would be for them to have happen, I know.
- 3:40I know what they're going through.
- 3:42They feel like nobody understands them.
- 3:45Instead, people question their choices.
- 3:49They wonder why this person would stay in the situation.
- 3:53So instead of getting the facts, asking questions, they assume or
- 3:58judge. And for some people, that makes
- 4:02them retreat, makes them not speak about it for fear that
- 4:07it's embarrassing, shameful. Nobody hears the mixed messages
- 4:12and the false promises they're being told.
- 4:15Those are the things that makes them hold out hope, makes them
- 4:19stay stuck and confused. Instead, they hear openly or
- 4:26between the lines. Why don't you get it?
- 4:29This person, he's just not that into you or this person doesn't
- 4:34have any regard for you or wouldn't you want to be treated
- 4:38better? Don't you want better for
- 4:41yourself? And I guess it comes down to
- 4:43self love, self respect, all the self stuff, right?
- 4:49But at the time when you're in it, you don't know that you're a
- 4:53people pleaser designed to make everyone feel comfortable at
- 4:57your own expense. You don't know that your ability
- 5:00to care is the exact thing that somebody preys on.
- 5:05They see it as their way in your vulnerable spot.
- 5:10Your vulnerability is their access point.
- 5:15But the thing about me, once I realized this, I never wanted to
- 5:18change. I didn't want to change because
- 5:21other people around me were I guess, evil doers.
- 5:26I wanted to stay the same, but just see things clearly and
- 5:31quickly. So when I hear somebody that's I
- 5:34feel like they're in quicksand, I want to pull them out.
- 5:38Maybe that's what this podcast is all about, me trying to pull
- 5:41everybody out of the quicksand, letting them know that they're
- 5:44not alone, Letting them know that you need to get aware,
- 5:49aware of your surroundings, where that somebody is not
- 5:52coming to save you. You need to save yourself.
- 5:55Speaking of quicksand, I've watched plenty of videos of how
- 5:58to save yourself when you're caught in it.
- 6:02And for these people that are going through this, that's what
- 6:06they're going to have to do. They're going to have to figure
- 6:09it out, figure out what maybe they never wanted to see in the
- 6:121st place is that all of their kindness, caring, generosity of
- 6:15spirit, they're giving, giving of themselves, time, money, what
- 6:20have you. It's not going to make other
- 6:22people see you differently. Those people, they know who you
- 6:25are right away. And for some of us, we're easy
- 6:28marks. That's not easy to say and it's
- 6:31harder to accept, but I think once you release the whole ego
- 6:35aspect, it gets easier. I was reading this book by
- 6:39Picasso's girlfriend. She was his life partner for, I
- 6:43don't know, a decade or so. And it was so hard to listen to.
- 6:47Her story sounded so much like stories that I've had in my
- 6:50life, not to the degree hers was so much worse, so much so that
- 6:55it was hard for me to listen. I kept wanting to Fast forward,
- 6:59but I sat through it. I sat through listening to all
- 7:03of the abuse that Picasso was dishing out to this young,
- 7:07beautiful girl in her early 20s and he in his 60s.
- 7:12I just saw the disparity, the cruelty.
- 7:16Nothing about that relationship seemed balanced to me.
- 7:20Here she looked up to him, and he saw that as his way in, his
- 7:23power over her, his way to manipulate.
- 7:26And he did. He manipulated her until she saw
- 7:30it, until she finally figured out what maybe she didn't want
- 7:34to believe for so long, which is this is unsustainable.
- 7:38This is torture. It's killing my peace.
- 7:43For some of us, we need breaking points.
- 7:45We need to get to a point where things are so bad, so bleak,
- 7:49where we don't recognize ourselves, we don't know how we
- 7:51got here, that we start to pull ourselves out little by little,
- 7:56recognizing signs that this isn't OK, being spoken to like
- 8:00this isn't OK Being loved like this, I don't want.
- 8:05If this is love, I'm OK. You can have it.
- 8:09That's when you let the light in.
- 8:10It's in those small moments and glimpses of what is real and
- 8:15what you know to be true that you start to get out.
- 8:19You start to break free for yourself.
- 8:22For my friend, I know she's listening and I hope she knows
- 8:25that I'm talking about her. I want so badly for her to just
- 8:29pull herself out. I think a lot of people that
- 8:31were around me when I was becoming undone wanted me to be
- 8:35pulled out. I think a lot of people wanted
- 8:37to shake me, but I needed to wake up on my own.
- 8:41I needed people around me to just give me the space to
- 8:44understand that what I was going through was so confusing.
- 8:48It was confusing for me. It was confusing to be around,
- 8:52and I didn't recognize myself. And for other people that are
- 8:56being manipulated, gaslit, stonewalled, you name it, it's
- 9:02like a silent torture. But when you awaken and you let
- 9:06awareness in, everything becomes so clear and it is so confusing
- 9:13because the how did I get here kicks in.
- 9:16That's the moment where you want to let in this self loathing.
- 9:19But I resisted. I let myself cry here, there and
- 9:24maybe everywhere. But ultimately I resisted any
- 9:27negative talk. I had no time for that.
- 9:30I just had to figure out how could this have happened and how
- 9:33could I make sure this never happened again.
- 9:36So I read, I read about narcissist psychopaths, I read
- 9:40about relationships that were awful.
- 9:42Frida Kahlo's relationship to Diego Rivera, well that was the
- 9:46most difficult read I've ever had to listen to.
- 9:49It was painful hearing what people will accept and endure in
- 9:54the name of a relationship. I guess now I realize that the
- 9:58relationship that I value the most is the relationship I have
- 10:01with myself. My relationship to my time, what
- 10:04I view as self respect, my peace, dignity and collectively
- 10:10it culminates into self love. I guess the best way for me to
- 10:14explain awareness is to explain the gift that it brought to my
- 10:18life. In so many situations and
- 10:21relationships, whether it be romantic or with family, friends
- 10:27or at work. It was like I was asleep and
- 10:30letting other people drive. But I learned, and sometimes it
- 10:34takes the most toxic relationships or environments to
- 10:38jolt us awake. So I guess to close, I'll go
- 10:42back to the story of Francois Gilo and Pablo Picasso.
- 10:46This is the last paragraph in her memoir that she wrote with
- 10:50Carlton Lake. Pablo had told me that first
- 10:55afternoon I visited him alone that he felt our relationship
- 10:58would bring light into both of our lives.
- 11:00My coming to him, he said, seemed like a window that was
- 11:04opening up, and he wanted it to remain open.
- 11:08I did too, as long as it let in the light.
- 11:11When it no longer did, I closed it, much against my own desire.
- 11:16From that moment on, he burned all the bridges that connected
- 11:20me to the past I shared with him.
- 11:22But in doing so, he forced me to discover myself and thus to
- 11:27survive. I shall never cease being
- 11:29grateful to him for that. After hearing the end of the
- 11:34book, that last paragraph, I went back and I listened to it
- 11:39again and again. I related so much to it.
- 11:44There was a beauty in becoming aware, even though it's hard to
- 11:49reconcile the relationships that bring us to our lowest point but
- 11:55then make us aware. Aware that things can't stay the
- 12:00same, we can't stay the same, and that things are going to
- 12:05have to change, starting with what we can change.
- 12:10Taking that single action, whatever that might be.
- 12:14Maybe it's choosing not to show up the way you usually do in
- 12:19movies. So often the villain is redeemed
- 12:24by the person that cares about him, sees his hidden potential.
- 12:29And I think that that's what confuses us.
- 12:32We believe that what's possible in fiction can be real.
- 12:37We learn it from a young age to invest in somebody's potential,
- 12:42see the best in somebody, inspire them to be better.
- 12:48But sometimes that isn't our role.
- 12:51And sometimes people are who they are and they don't want to
- 12:55change. They don't even know what
- 12:57they're doing and that they need to change.
- 13:01It's only with awareness that you come to know yourself.
- 13:05You come to know others. You become clear on what you can
- 13:10and cannot do, and you accept people as they are, and you let
- 13:16go of their hidden potential and their glimpses of goodness and
- 13:22you see how they're showing up. And then you decide you can
- 13:28close the window after letting in the light.
- 13:32Because it doesn't matter what the other person does, sees, or
- 13:37chooses. It only matters what you choose.
- 13:43And sometimes letting go and waking up is the gift.
