- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for October 27, 2026 The Gap Between What We Say and How
- 0:06We Live Yesterday I talked about figuring out what matters.
- 0:09I proposed a few tiers rather than enumerated lists.
- 0:12If you have decided what is in first tier and what is less important,
- 0:16the next step is to examine your life and see how well, or poorly,
- 0:20it reflects those ideals.
- 0:22I recently had someone who says they are a Christian tell me that they are okay
- 0:25with what amounts to the CliffsNotes version of the Bible.
- 0:28What's more, they just don't have the time to verify it's accurate.
- 0:31They would likely tell you that following Jesus is a tier one thing for them,
- 0:35but their life tells a different story.
- 0:37As you can imagine, Lori and I have experienced the same thing from men and
- 0:40women who say their spouse is a very high priority.
- 0:43If they don't live that out, their spouse is not fooled by their claim.
- 0:47There are places where not living up to what we say is important will bite us.
- 0:51Your employer, for example, will not be okay with you doing a halfway job.
- 0:55If you are the employer, your employees don't want a sign telling them how much
- 0:59they matter. They want to know that based on how you treat them.
- 1:02Your friends are much the same. Ignore them or give them leftovers,
- 1:06and they will become distant.
- 1:07God will nudge you if you're not living what you claim, but he won't push.
- 1:11You can wander if you want.
- 1:13Your spouse will make a fuss for a while, but if you don't change,
- 1:16they will give up and grow away from you.
- 1:18Your kids have limited options, most of which show as discipline problems.
- 1:22Your dog will probably love you regardless of your failures,
- 1:25while your cat will show disdain regardless. Just saying.
- 1:29The bottom line is that most of life won't sound an alarm when you stop giving
- 1:33your priorities the attention they deserve.
- 1:35And much of what will give you a hint will do it in a way that can be easily
- 1:38dismissed as being something else.
- 1:40You can wander a long way from doing what you say is important to you without
- 1:44being hit in the face by it.
- 1:46Often when it gets bad enough you can't ignore it, you've made a real mess.
- 1:50Want to check yourself with regard to your marriage? Ask your spouse,
- 1:53do you know I love you? And follow it with, do I show that love well?
- 1:57Ask the same questions about respect, about what they think and do being important
- 2:01to you, and if you seem to value them.
- 2:04And of course, thank them for their honesty, even if you don't like what you hear.
- 2:08This is Paul, and sometimes doing marriage well involves difficult questions.
