Transcript
- 0:00Oh god. Oh my god.
- 0:02Fuck!
- 0:12We're a family friendly podcast. God damn it.
- 0:15Most certainly not.
- 0:16I would hope not. Otherwise, I don't know why I was invited.
- 0:19Yeah, right.
- 0:22Speaking of podcasts,
- 0:24welcome back to Cage Match, going around about way of meeting Nicholas Cage.
- 0:27I like your real like gulp swallow right in the middle of that, too.
- 0:30Oh, yeah. Speaking of podcasts, mouth noises.
- 0:34Yeah. He was actually just choking on his first real segue.
- 0:39Hey, wait, what now?
- 0:41You did it. Did what?
- 0:43It was nevermind. There you go.
- 0:47One day, one day, you'll know.
- 0:48I was speaking to him. Yeah.
- 0:50Also, we're not we're not supposed to use the term mouth noises.
- 0:52It's apparently offensive to people who hate mouth noises. Oh, well, fuck them.
- 0:57So do we just refer to it as oral sloppiness?
- 1:00Hey, ladies, check out my oral sloppiness.
- 1:05Welcome back to our verbal sloppiness. Yeah.
- 1:08All right. Let's get back to this podcast.
- 1:10We watched 64 Nick Cage films and we're going to rank them
- 1:14and decide what is the all time best Nick Cage film as decided by us.
- 1:18I am one of your hosts, Sean here.
- 1:22Well, remotely here with me.
- 1:24I'm Nick and I'm not there.
- 1:27Right. Because COVID as I'm here and he's yes.
- 1:30In your hearts.
- 1:32He's always with you in your hearts.
- 1:34Yeah, I'm in you somewhere.
- 1:36And our producer, Peter. Hello.
- 1:39And this week, we have a special guest, Shay.
- 1:42Hi, Shay. Welcome, guys.
- 1:45Thrilled to be here.
- 1:47All right. So Shay, how do we know you?
- 1:50Well, you don't. But Peter does. OK, good.
- 1:54That's happened more and more.
- 1:56At least one of us knows people.
- 1:58Oh, people come on up to me on the street and they're like, Hi, Sean, how you doing?
- 2:00I'm like, I don't know.
- 2:02No, but I actually know Peter through Peter's wife.
- 2:06And we used to sing in a Norwegian youth choir.
- 2:12So obviously super cool.
- 2:14Yeah, back in my day.
- 2:18Lots of friends like Peter's wife and now like Peter, too.
- 2:21So it all worked out. That's two.
- 2:23Two friends. It's all you need.
- 2:26All I got. Yeah.
- 2:27One of them is not even here. Yeah.
- 2:29Yeah. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 2:30Don't start lumping me in with that.
- 2:33As a friend.
- 2:37I don't need that heat on me.
- 2:38Yeah. Fuck it. You can't prove nothing.
- 2:41Are you a cop? You got to tell me if you are.
- 2:45That's right. I do.
- 2:46None of that is true.
- 2:49I don't know, man.
- 2:50I've watched a lot of movies.
- 2:53They're only Nick Cage movies, though.
- 2:56And he always does tell him if he's a cop.
- 2:57That's true. Mm hmm.
- 2:59Did you see Sorcerer's Apprentice?
- 3:00He was basically just spelling it out.
- 3:03Are you bringing that one up?
- 3:04Because, you know, that's the only other episode of your podcast I listened to.
- 3:08No, just kidding.
- 3:09I'm not kidding.
- 3:10This week, we are discussing the films.
- 3:14Nick Cage is one of his earliest performances in Valley Girl
- 3:17and kind of a nice return to form with Weatherman.
- 3:22If I remember my timeline correctly.
- 3:23Yeah. Or that's either before the weirdness or kind of.
- 3:27Yeah, it's before all the tax problems and his career choices get.
- 3:34Questionable.
- 3:35Yeah, he still looks healthy.
- 3:37Well, I was going to ask you, what is your interest in the universe of Nicholas Cage?
- 3:42What what drew you to Cage?
- 3:45Honestly, what doesn't?
- 3:48I mean, a lot doesn't.
- 3:49But what does is, you know, I've just feel like I've just seen so many of his films from,
- 3:56you know, I was born in the early 80s and he was in everything.
- 3:59So something I saw inevitably had Nicholas Cage.
- 4:03And I remember when I was in, gosh, when did Con Air come out?
- 4:08Oh, I should probably know that off the top of my head.
- 4:09Let's just say 1998.
- 4:11Oh, sounds about right.
- 4:13That's I think that's even.
- 4:14Oh, yeah. I even think that's late.
- 4:16But OK, so high school, I think I remember just being really into Con Air
- 4:21and his hair a lot in that movie for whatever reason.
- 4:26I have a friend actually who I used to work with.
- 4:28I know another one, guys.
- 4:29That makes three.
- 4:30But he was a little obsessed with Nicholas Cage.
- 4:34And so we just started talking a lot more about Nicholas Cage at work.
- 4:38And so I just became even a little bit more interested in his career.
- 4:42And now I think my favorite movies are probably the ones that shouldn't be anyone's favorite movies
- 4:49like National Treasure.
- 4:50You brought it.
- 4:51You brought up an interesting point, though.
- 4:53I feel like most people's introduction to Nicholas Cage was probably against that.
- 4:58Will, just because he was has been in literally everything.
- 5:02So Valley Girl 83, I want to say 1983, 1983.
- 5:08All right. So Nick Cage plays Randy.
- 5:10Deborah Foreman is Julie.
- 5:13Elizabeth Daly is Lauren, one of her friends.
- 5:15Michael Bowen is Tommy, a douchebag.
- 5:18And Cameron Dye is Fred, the best guy in the whole movie.
- 5:22I love Fred.
- 5:23Tommy looks like he's on Ski Patrol.
- 5:25Even though this movie takes place in the valley, he looks like he should just have that like buffer coat.
- 5:33And he looks like a villain from Better Off Dead.
- 5:36I've I've been working on my short shorts again.
- 5:43So this time I've prepared it in poetry form.
- 5:48Fucking awesome. Amazing.
- 5:49I've got a haiku.
- 5:52So Valley Girl, it's a lot like that Romeo and Juliet, but no one dies here.
- 6:00Yeah. Yeah. OK. That's good.
- 6:02Fair movie. Synopsized.
- 6:06I mean, common decency dies in this film.
- 6:09Yeah. I mean, it is from 1983 and it shows.
- 6:13Yeah. We'll get into that.
- 6:15So Elephant in the Room.
- 6:17Everyone in this movie looks like they're in their 30s.
- 6:19Including Nicolas Cage, who is 19 and all of the adults all look the same age.
- 6:26I really struggled with the fact that they all look the same age.
- 6:29It's like, oh, and this is my mom who is two years older than me, apparently.
- 6:33Yeah. I mean, people definitely age differently now, because if you looked back at like, like your parents,
- 6:41what do they call those things?
- 6:42Yearbooks, they'd all look like they could have bought cigarettes, I'm sure they probably were all buying cigarettes.
- 6:49That's why. Probably.
- 6:50I mean, yeah, that would explain the skin.
- 6:54So we have the haiku.
- 6:56Yeah, which is really kind of wrapped it all up pretty nicely.
- 6:59Yeah, you pretty much nailed everything.
- 7:00I think we can move on.
- 7:01So Julie, she's, you know, the popular girl, you know, on her way to being prom queen, being best student award, prom queen.
- 7:10So being best student award, breaks up with her boyfriend and then meets a guy from the other side of the tracks, Randy, who is a punk.
- 7:19And that is the main schism in this entire film is they wear different clothing and because different music, too.
- 7:31They listen to one band.
- 7:33They listen to that bar every time they go to that bar.
- 7:36I'm just going to get this out. I just want to get this out there because this is really the only thing I want to talk about with this film is who the fuck is this movie for?
- 7:43Oh, man.
- 7:44Female director, but there is no good like female representation in this film.
- 7:49I know exactly who this movie is for.
- 7:52This movie is for me when I was that age.
- 7:55When you were a 30 year old teenager in 1983.
- 8:00Yeah.
- 8:01All right.
- 8:02Well, it's like this movie is I don't know, it's cool.
- 8:06It's fun to see like that edge of Hollywood in the 80s.
- 8:10It's I don't know.
- 8:12As somebody who was an outsider and stuff growing up to like the attitude of Fred and Randy and the people they hang out with, like they're just out there having fun.
- 8:25They're just wilding out.
- 8:27I couldn't tell if this movie was trying to make any type of commentary about how everyone looked down on Randy because he was dirty and he was a punk and everyone in the valley was fucking awful to the point where one girl's mom was trying to fuck a teenager.
- 8:45Right. Yeah.
- 8:46Yeah.
- 8:47This isn't commentary.
- 8:48This is just like the American pie of the 80s.
- 8:51This is just a raunchy teenage like right.
- 8:54And a comedy that's that's what it is.
- 8:57That's who it's for.
- 8:58It's for kids that just want to see a couple nipples and they want to sell those nakedness and some laugh at food.
- 9:06Jokes.
- 9:07Yeah, it's just antics.
- 9:08It's fun.
- 9:09It's just a fun movie.
- 9:10It's just there for fun.
- 9:11It's popcorn.
- 9:12I did enjoy just going back to a simpler time where, you know, a bunch of teenagers have a house party that their parents hosted and all of the teenagers are just chain smoking in the foyer.
- 9:23Their wallpaper probably looked like shit.
- 9:26Yellowed and peeling.
- 9:28No.
- 9:29So something really disturbed me about that party.
- 9:33And there was a scene where they were eating some sushi and there was a bowl of what at the time it looked like peanut butter.
- 9:44Yeah.
- 9:45I had chopsticks in the peanut butter bowl.
- 9:48And I just I my brain kind of I had to like legit rewound it because I was like, did I just see people are so cheap and there's chopsticks.
- 10:00And then later I find out, oh, no, it's not peanut butter.
- 10:04Oh, it's pistachio paste.
- 10:06What?
- 10:07You got it mixed up there.
- 10:09So it was peanut butter.
- 10:11They were putting it on there.
- 10:12The pistachio paste that he put in his mouth was the wasabi.
- 10:16And he puts it in his mouth and he just sits there like, I mean, that makes more sense.
- 10:19But I didn't. OK, I think they should have played that up more because I remember the first time I put wasabi in my mouth.
- 10:24It was like, I am dying right now.
- 10:27That cut away pretty quick.
- 10:29But it was just like the wasabi in the mouth, that blank, like dead face.
- 10:33And then Fred's like, I think I'm going to get a drink.
- 10:36The joke is that people in the 80s in the Valley thought they were super cosmopolitan.
- 10:42They knew about these things.
- 10:44Like they were up on all the like big New York East Coast trends, but they didn't have it.
- 10:49They were putting peanut butter on sushi.
- 10:51The guy who was putting the peanut butter on the sushi.
- 10:53Who was he?
- 10:54Because I thought he was supposed to be the dad.
- 10:56I know the dad's dad.
- 10:58It's Stacey's mom's boyfriend, I believe.
- 11:02But Stacey's mom was trying to go on.
- 11:06Yeah, that's true.
- 11:07Well, I mean, I know that from song.
- 11:09There was a whole plot point about, again, her trying to bang a teenager.
- 11:13Yeah, she was trying to bang a teenager.
- 11:15I don't think her moral compass necessarily pointed north.
- 11:18I don't think she cared that she had a boyfriend.
- 11:21And that is an ongoing like kind of thing they allude to the whole film.
- 11:26And then there's a prolonged him like him sneaking into the house and someone's in the shower.
- 11:31And he's like looking for Stacey's mom.
- 11:33And then Stacey's mom comes home, opens the door and he's just banging Stacey.
- 11:37It's just weird.
- 11:39Yeah.
- 11:40Much like the other shower hiding in a shower.
- 11:44Oh, I forgot about that.
- 11:46So Randy gets bumped from the party because he starts talking to Julie and the Krusty Punks.
- 11:52They're wearing black clothes.
- 11:54Do we want to start kind of working in a chronological order?
- 11:58No, I don't know that it actually matters.
- 12:00None of it does.
- 12:01You can jump around pretty easily.
- 12:04Hey, don't rely on me for chronology.
- 12:08You can absolutely just steer this ship.
- 12:11No, it's actually kind of fun sitting outside of the circle and being like, wow, this this whole podcast is just barely held together.
- 12:19Just rubber bands and demon.
- 12:22That's all that keeps this thing together.
- 12:24Pretty much helping.
- 12:26What happened to you, Nick?
- 12:27You used to be cool.
- 12:28You used to just talk about whatever came across your mind.
- 12:30You were a fucking punk.
- 12:31What happened to you?
- 12:32Square.
- 12:35Randy gets up, gets his ass kicked and gets kicked out of the party, gets mad, decides to sneak back into the bathroom window and just hang out in the shower until Julie happens to come in.
- 12:45I didn't love that.
- 12:47What are you talking about?
- 12:48That's great.
- 12:49What are you talking about?
- 12:50As he's just sort of like peering over the top of the shower and practicing cool like karate punches.
- 12:55Yeah, he wasn't peeping on anybody.
- 12:57He wasn't being a creep.
- 12:59He was. That's the only way back into the party that he could get past Tommy and his goon squad.
- 13:05People are doing like smoking, smoking, smoking drugs outside of outside of the shower and nobody notices.
- 13:15That's ridiculous.
- 13:16All around. Bad move.
- 13:17Bad move.
- 13:18Yeah.
- 13:19Now, that's your only way back into the party.
- 13:20I say maybe maybe don't go back.
- 13:23I don't know.
- 13:25It looked me like it worked.
- 13:27He did get back into the party and he did get the girl for a future point though that we.
- 13:31That's all that matters for a future.
- 13:33Talk to a second location with him.
- 13:35Never go to a second location.
- 13:36Not with a punk for a future man plot point continuity.
- 13:42Nick, Julie just broken up with her boyfriend who was a dick and she didn't like it'll come up later.
- 13:48Tommy was boring.
- 13:49The movie opens up with them like at the beach.
- 13:53Like that's the first time you see Randy and you see Fred and you see a bunch of the girls.
- 13:57They're all like at the beach and the girls are starting this or planning this party, the party with the sushi.
- 14:03But Nick Cage is chest hair is shaved into the most delightful triangle.
- 14:13Just like the hardest, like Pythagoras would have been proud.
- 14:19So, you know, I'm always on sternum bush watch.
- 14:22Yeah, I was going to bring this up.
- 14:24Thank you, Nick.
- 14:25Do you think he was going for the Superman ass?
- 14:27I don't think so.
- 14:29I think he was he was 19.
- 14:31I think his hair hadn't quite figured it out.
- 14:33It's so perfectly triangular.
- 14:35Do you think it was a Merkin like a chest Merkin could have been.
- 14:42OK, also speaking of the beach scene, did anyone else pick up on this?
- 14:45When the girls are in line for snacks, Fred is just kind of leaning over trying to like listen to their their plans.
- 14:52And that's how they hear about the party.
- 14:54There is a dude in front of the girls just waiting in line who has painted on abs.
- 15:01It's like it's so abundantly clear that they're makeup on.
- 15:05Fuck, you just reminded me of the only time I've been to Venice Beach.
- 15:09I was like maybe 12.
- 15:12And you got painted on abs.
- 15:13Yeah, I got my abs painted on.
- 15:15And there are people like literally pumping iron on the beach and like fucking doing all the cool like we're super hot L.A.
- 15:25people things.
- 15:26And I'm like playing in the ocean.
- 15:28And then a wave hits me right in the face and I like immediately swallow a bunch of seawater.
- 15:34I like stand back up and I look and I just start vomiting all over Venice Beach.
- 15:41That's very on brand.
- 15:44I fucking hate L.A.
- 15:46All of it, the entire fucking county.
- 15:49Fuck all of it.
- 15:50Keep that in.
- 15:51I want them to know how I feel about them.
- 15:52No, we can let L.A. know.
- 15:53Put them on notice.
- 15:54Sean's coming for you.
- 15:56I'm not.
- 15:57If I can never step foot in that city again, I'll be fucking happy.
- 16:00They don't make the valley look appealing at all.
- 16:03Like there's a nice like helicopter like what we would think of a drone shot now of the valley at the start of this movement like man, that looks awful.
- 16:10Yeah, it's a pretty boring looking place.
- 16:13Hollywood looks crappy, but also I don't know.
- 16:17It looks way more fun.
- 16:18Yeah.
- 16:19Yeah.
- 16:20I mean, they were definitely just playing up the juxtaposition of the two worlds that the characters come from.
- 16:24So.
- 16:25So, yeah.
- 16:26So Randy's a punk.
- 16:27Julie's like from the valley going to be valedictorian and all that fun stuff.
- 16:31And then all of her friends won.
- 16:33Did you say valedictorian?
- 16:35I did.
- 16:36I tried to catch myself.
- 16:38Thank you for, you know, pointed it out.
- 16:40But all of her friends.
- 16:42Well, we have a we have an awesome montage of them, like just going to every movie and walking by.
- 16:47I'm movie to my house and awesome montage.
- 16:51There were at least two.
- 16:53Yeah.
- 16:54OK.
- 16:55But the first montage where they because, you know, subtext is in the thing in this movie.
- 16:59They go and see Romeo and Juliet.
- 17:02But he takes her to, like, you know, the punk club where the punks are just singing a song about being in love juxtaposed with the end of this film where all the hip valley kids are listening to Johnny, are you a queer?
- 17:15So we're jumping right into Johnny, are you a queer?
- 17:17I just I want that juxtaposition in there.
- 17:19I want that side by side.
- 17:20You want to start talking about it because I got things to say about that song.
- 17:23I want to hear what you've got to say about that song.
- 17:26And then we're going to talk about music in general, because the music in this movie fucking rules.
- 17:29Let's talk about that Josie Cotton song.
- 17:31The soundtrack is great.
- 17:32The Josie Cotton song is like the music is it's written to the same like tune as Fetch Me Another Beer by the band Fear out of L.A.
- 17:47They're an L.A. punk band.
- 17:49This guy took the song.
- 17:51He wrote Johnny, are you a queer?
- 17:53Was giving it to this other band, had a falling out with them and said, fuck you.
- 17:59You can't use it. Josie Cotton gets to sing.
- 18:02Johnny, are you a queer?
- 18:04That's fucking wild.
- 18:06When that song came out, there was like all sorts of like, like back and forth controversy.
- 18:11The conservatives said that the song was coming from the perspective of a guy trying to coerce a straight dude into homosexuality.
- 18:23Did not get that from the song.
- 18:25I know that this was just conservative controversy in the 80s.
- 18:28It's Reaganism. Thank God we don't have to deal with that anymore.
- 18:31Making shit up that isn't real. Right. Right.
- 18:34I get it. Yeah, we've gotten over all the Reaganism.
- 18:38But then all the more liberal people were like, oh, my God, asking if he's gay or whatnot.
- 18:45But the song also like helped a lot of gay people come out and address and embrace their own homosexuality.
- 18:53So it's like it went through like all these different waves.
- 18:58It does slap. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 19:01Who doesn't love Johnny? Are you a queer? That's a great song.
- 19:04Well, as a queer person, I feel like now if people heard the song or if more people knew that the song existed, it would absolutely do very well.
- 19:17Yes. Yeah.
- 19:18So it's just about a chick who's got this guy who doesn't pay attention to her and she thinks that he's gay because he doesn't pay attention.
- 19:26But it's really because she sucks. So. Yeah. Right. Yeah.
- 19:29I guess we never really said what the song really is. We just said that.
- 19:32Yeah, it's just it's it's just yeah, it's you know, looking at.
- 19:36Yeah, it's ridiculous. This was more my point. I was hoping to make the word queer.
- 19:40I think that was scary to liberals back at that time that it wasn't embraced like it is now by the queer community.
- 19:48I mean, you hear queer, queer, queer, queer.
- 19:50I'm saying queer bombs like all the time in my life and on this podcast.
- 19:54So, you know, I think that's why I'm saying that is just. Oh, if I heard it on the radio today, I would not bat an eye.
- 20:02But given when this movie was made, I'm like, hmm.
- 20:05And the little backup dancers doing the mincing hand. Yes. Right.
- 20:10Well, yeah, I mean, it's still the 80s.
- 20:12So, you know, it's going to be problematic somehow.
- 20:15I just think it's kind of amazing, though.
- 20:18But I just like the juxtaposition that, OK, that's what's being played at the high school senior prom.
- 20:23Yeah. As opposed to the punk club, which is all of them just singing slightly louder songs about being in love and in healthy relationships.
- 20:32There are a lot of punk songs about being in love, so that's not out of place.
- 20:37That's fine. The Ramones made a big career out of singing stupid popcorn songs about being in love.
- 20:42It's true. Very good point.
- 20:44That's the club that just has the one band that is always playing.
- 20:48Yeah. Yeah. Always playing their same song.
- 20:50So it just seems not like a great business model, but I don't know.
- 20:54I mean, it was always popping. Yeah.
- 20:56Halfway through the movie when they played a song for the second time, Josie's like, we've already heard this one.
- 21:03Awesome. I knew she would catch that shit. Yeah.
- 21:06The music, though, is really fucking awesome. It is.
- 21:08Two thoughts. One, I've got an audio recording of Shay singing Johnny Are You Queer?
- 21:14And I really want to be able to put that on this podcast. I mean, I could do it live.
- 21:18Oh, yeah. Do you want to do a live rendition? If you want me to. Yeah, hit it.
- 21:22How are you so weird, boy? Johnny, are you queer boy?
- 21:28The dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee.
- 21:34That was good. There you go. That's.
- 21:38But the other the other song.
- 21:40Too bad you can't see me because I feel like my face.
- 21:44That really did add to it. It was like half of the coolness.
- 21:47The other one that I got obsessed with is that song eaten by the monster of love by the band Sparks.
- 21:52It fucking slaps. It's so good. And that album is called Angst in My Pants.
- 22:00Every track on there is fucking awesome sounding.
- 22:02It's like Sextown USA is one of the names of the songs like these guys have been doing.
- 22:07They've been performing for like since like 1973 or something like that.
- 22:11It's just two brothers. They just put out another album. Do they do bar mitzvahs?
- 22:15They fucking should.
- 22:17They had a new video that just came out where with Cate Blanchett is dancing and they're just like performing with her.
- 22:22It's wild, man. Nick, you still yet to have a bar mitzvah.
- 22:26Yeah, that's not true. Tell us. Go on.
- 22:30In college, I used to throw a lot of like themed parties and things.
- 22:36So when I turned 20, we got a keg and I threw myself a 20th bar mitzvah.
- 22:41And I proceeded to do every Jewish celebratory thing I knew of.
- 22:47So I broke some glass and did you get circumcised?
- 22:54You know, I've seen your penis and I can't remember if you're circumcised or not.
- 22:58Yeah, you got to look really close. Valley Girl.
- 23:04Anyway, on that note, yeah.
- 23:07So the crux of the film is movie for teenagers.
- 23:11Julie has to decide whether or not she wants to date the boyfriend she broke up with and hates or the punk who she has a very healthy relationship with and loves.
- 23:22But her friends don't like. But who everyone else hates. Yeah, right.
- 23:26She has to choose between her boyfriend and her friends.
- 23:29But at no point is there the option of her just breaking up with Randy and being fine.
- 23:34Yeah, right. And not you could just not be Tommy. Yeah.
- 23:38Who? That dude sucks. You'd also get better friends.
- 23:42Yes, that too. Randy also does all the classic 80s moves of how to win a girl back, i.e. stalking her, like shows up at all her dates, is sleeping on her front lawn.
- 23:53Oh, yeah, that's right. That's right.
- 23:56Sleeping on the front lawn part was a that was a step far for me, especially considering he obviously like in his sleeping bag was like down to his drawers because he's just like shirtless holding this sleeping bag around him.
- 24:10And it's like, oh, his boots and stuff are sitting next to him. Pants folded up.
- 24:14We know Julie's parents are hippies and are just kind of like freewheeling and fine with her like making her own choices.
- 24:21There there's a strange man sleeping on your front lawn. Maybe I don't know. Get the hose.
- 24:26I liked her parents. Yeah, I liked her dad smoking the joint in the bathroom, like trying to calm himself down before Julie goes to prom.
- 24:35When did the dad he's talking about? Did anyone catch how he talks to her about Randy's dick possibly not working right?
- 24:45Yeah. And that that was one of the reasons why he didn't want her to be with Randy.
- 24:50What was going to make his dick not work right? He's a punk and probably does. Oh, who knows? I bet he's got a she was positing to her dad like, I've got this problem.
- 25:00I've got these two guys. I need to choose between one that I like. And he was like, think about that one guy's dirty dick, though. OK.
- 25:09So that was basically verbatim. He combed out that like caterpillar of his and he just looked her straight in the eyes and was like, girl, tell me about Randy's dick.
- 25:24So did anyone else think so during that's what I heard, man.
- 25:29In the stocking montage, she's like reading her bedside book and then opens it and finds like photos from like a photo booth of Randy. And just based on all the weird shit he's done up to that point, stocking her.
- 25:42Did he break into a room and like place those in there? No, she always had those on her bedside table. I'm sure they were just in this book and she carried them around.
- 25:51You're also maybe mixing it up with Peggy Sue got married when he tried to murder her. No, I remember. I remember sneaky fingers.
- 25:58This movie concludes with how all great 80s teen romps do. The hero commits assault.
- 26:07That gets kicked in terms of like who assaulted who first. He had been punched by Tommy before Tommy punched first.
- 26:16Yes, but not in this instant. He just ran up on stage backstage, sucker punched him, then let him get up to have an actual fight.
- 26:24Yeah, if I was fighting a football player, that's how I do it, too. And then Tommy like full on tries to karate get it.
- 26:30Yeah, but then a food fight starts and that shit's fucking nice. Yeah. Like fucking Julie hits Tommy in the face with some kind of like weird green.
- 26:41I'm assuming jello pie who's serving pistachio. Pistachio pie is peanut butter, y'all.
- 26:46Yeah, like pistachio pudding pie at prom. Like this is what I want to know. That's a real food crime. Yeah.
- 26:55They were like, it's food fight scene time. Time to prepare just different colors of glop for people to sling at each other, please.
- 27:02Glop and popcorn, please. No teacher tries to stop it.
- 27:07Julie is just fine with it. And then just they they steal while they get in the back of Tommy's limo that he rented and just drive off.
- 27:15Yeah, they take his reservation at the Sheraton, too.
- 27:18They get in and the driver's like to the Hollywood Sheraton, sir. It's like, yeah, fuck it. Why not?
- 27:25There's no end to this arc. She dumps him. She's mad at him.
- 27:29He beats up her boyfriend and then they're back in love. Yeah, that's the end of the arc. She was never mad at him.
- 27:35She was mad at herself for choosing Tommy. I know.
- 27:38But there's like that's not there's that's never went woven there.
- 27:42You're misrepresenting the facts.
- 27:45No, he punches a guy in five minutes late. The movie's over.
- 27:48OK, raise your hand if you didn't want to punch Tommy.
- 27:51I mean, I wanted to punch Tommy. Everyone amongst us wants to punch Tommy.
- 27:55People who are listening to this podcast want to punch Tommy. That dude fucking sucks.
- 27:59That's why you sucker punch him and run. I wanted to punch most of the people in the movie. It's true.
- 28:04Oh, you know what makes you really want to fucking punch that dude? Yeah.
- 28:07He ended up playing Buck in Kill Bill, the one who was like the rapist fucker.
- 28:12I swear that I like how that's the arc of that man's career. Yeah.
- 28:18What was it that Fred was in? Yeah, he's only in like one thing that I've seen.
- 28:22He's been in a bunch of stuff, but none of it mattered. He's been in a bunch of stuff.
- 28:26One of the things I really liked about Fred, there was one scene.
- 28:29I can't remember if it was at the party or if it was at prom, but he goes up to a girl.
- 28:32He's like, hey, do you want to dance? And she goes, she goes in another life.
- 28:36And he goes, yeah, I didn't either. I was just taking a poll.
- 28:41Well, he was a good fucking bro, too.
- 28:43Well, aside from the time he hid behind a girl while Tommy beat up his friend.
- 28:47He saved him from getting beat up by gangsters that one time, though.
- 28:51Yeah, that one time. That actor's name is Cameron Dye, who plays Fred.
- 28:56And he's just in like one episode of legit all the things that I watch.
- 29:00So that's why I recognize.
- 29:02It's like one of those people that ends up being a body in a TV show. Right.
- 29:06Yeah, he was that dead guy on that one SVU or whatever.
- 29:10We're talking about career arcs of people.
- 29:13And hey, I'm doing a segue and probably better than Sean, right, Nick?
- 29:17Because you are talking about something else that I forgot now because I was busy making fun of Sean.
- 29:23That's that's 90 percent of this podcast. Yeah, that's fine.
- 29:26If you're making fun of Sean, you're podcasting correctly.
- 29:29That's how we do it these days. That's why I've had my ex wife on this podcast.
- 29:33I listen to the podcast.
- 29:35No, but talk about the people who play all the characters.
- 29:38So Elizabeth Daly, can we talk about her, please?
- 29:41She played Lauren, the one who who dumb, dumb, but asshole guy Tommy Tommy.
- 29:48Yeah. Is like making out with.
- 29:50And that's like the boobs. Right. Right.
- 29:52Those are the boobs. Those are the boobs and they're beautiful boobs.
- 29:55Well, they belong to Elizabeth Daly, who is in Peewees Big Adventure as the girlfriend who has like the who's at the end.
- 30:03And and she just does all these different voices of cartoons like Tommy Pickles and I thought you were going to say large margin.
- 30:10I'm like, man, I haven't seen Peewee in a while.
- 30:12No, she's the girl who Peewee. Yeah. It's like the friend who then is.
- 30:16I totally forgot about that. Yeah. Yeah. I knew that she had a big voice acting career, but I thought he Pickles.
- 30:21Yeah. Yeah. She was. She did a lot of voices.
- 30:26Yeah. It's always credited as a I think E.G. Daly is her voice actor. Yes.
- 30:31Oh, yeah. Yeah. That's her voice actor name. I've seen Tommy Pickles boobs.
- 30:35Yeah. That's a statement. Oh, yeah. She was Buttercup of the Powerpuff Girls.
- 30:40Oh, that's right. Hold on.
- 30:42Have any of you three ever seen the newest Peewee movie?
- 30:46Peewees like Big Holiday or something? I think that was a thing.
- 30:50No, I never did. Oh, my God. It's so fucking good.
- 30:54I believe it. I'm going to die on this hill.
- 30:56That is a great fucking movie. It's Peewee. It's Joe Manganiello.
- 31:00It's got. I love Joe Manganiello. Yeah.
- 31:03He takes big adventures. There's. Oh, man.
- 31:06You know what? I'm going to fucking watch that tonight.
- 31:08We got to wrap this shit up, guys, because I got some Peewee to put down tonight.
- 31:12Why don't we do some quotes?
- 31:15So, yeah, mine was right after Julia dumps Randy.
- 31:21It's like, fuck off for sure. Like, totally.
- 31:26OK. And Peter, you are.
- 31:29He later on, he's talking with or he's like fucking around with Tommy and.
- 31:34Oh, yeah. And he's like the movie theater.
- 31:38And then he also like brings them fast food.
- 31:41And for some reason, Tommy never realizes it's the same fucking guy, which is absurd.
- 31:45He's wearing glasses every time. Yeah, right.
- 31:48It's a 3D glasses. One fucking Superman.
- 31:50And it's a montage. Yeah.
- 31:52But yeah, Tommy goes, Oh, here's you forgot our french fries and a coke fish head.
- 31:56And he goes, Oh, well, Peter Piper picked a pepper. I guess I did.
- 32:02All right. All right.
- 32:04I really liked the the the scene, the line when
- 32:08after Randy gets dumped by Julie, he's fucked up and he goes to that club that they're always at.
- 32:15And he like throws his wine bottle or his 40 or whatever the fuck he's drinking.
- 32:19And he like goes up to the bouncer and the bouncer is like, Hey, Randy, man, I can't let you in here like this.
- 32:24And Randy's just like, Hey, how you doing?
- 32:29Been good. And the bouncer just like shuffles them in.
- 32:32And he's just like, get in. And he's like, that's what I wanted.
- 32:36And just like truckedly like slides right in.
- 32:40Well, I think my I guess my quote is going to be Nick's very first line in the movie as Randy is just.
- 32:50What? Well, wait, hang on. Let's do the Venn diagram.
- 32:56Oh, yeah. Venn diagram.
- 32:58Good, good cage, good movie, bad cage, bad movie, bad, good, good, bad.
- 33:02I don't know what you just said, but I'll say, yep. Good.
- 33:06Yeah, that tracks. I thought it was a good movie and a good Nicholas Cage performance.
- 33:10I think so, too. I thought he had a you could see a lot of intention in everything that he did.
- 33:16And I know he played young and cool pretty well.
- 33:19Yeah, I didn't love his performance in general, but I had to remind myself.
- 33:24It's like this is his first actual feature role.
- 33:26And he was fucking 19 and he did pretty well.
- 33:30I think he did a good job in the entire thing.
- 33:32Yeah, some of it was a little rough, like it was a little rough around the edges.
- 33:35It's not polished, but his instincts are great.
- 33:39And also add that you kind of have the writing to work with as well.
- 33:46And so maybe I like to consider that I think for being the kind of silly, ridiculous movie that it was,
- 33:52he delivered the performance that I was wanting. Yeah, that's a fair.
- 33:56That's a fair assessment. So I'm going to say good, good. Yeah. Good, good.
- 33:59Good, good, good, good, good, good all around, especially because that fucking soundtrack.
- 34:02That thing is great. If for nothing more than just that one song that might be slightly problematic.
- 34:08But overall, I'm actually into it. Yeah. Super slaps and eaten by the monster of love.
- 34:13Go listen to that shit. It's my favorite. That was a good one. Yeah. Nick, I could introduce the movie first slightly.
- 34:20You know, I introduced it before our little break.
- 34:23Well, work your magic. I'm just going to start with him telling a haiku.
- 34:27I'm going to say dance monkey. Now we are talking about the weatherman.
- 34:31Introduce here. Have a haiku.
- 34:33All right. Just just isolate that audio and we go instead of this fight that we are now having.
- 34:40OK, then put this into. Absolutely.
- 34:43The weatherman from 2005 starring Nicholas Cage and my celebrity crush, Hope Davis. Hope Davis.
- 34:51I love Hope Davis. Yeah, he didn't even have to bench press her this time.
- 34:55We saw them on screen together. He was bench pressing her.
- 34:57So the weatherman, the weatherman in haiku form.
- 35:01You can make big bucks, but forget the tartar sauce.
- 35:06You will die alone. Wow, that's real good.
- 35:10Yeah, that actually is a fucking fantastic representation of this movie.
- 35:15Please put that on my headstone. Yeah. Nice job, Nick.
- 35:19Covid suits you. Yeah, I have a liberal arts degree.
- 35:23All right. So the weatherman, we've got Nick Cage as Dave Spritz, Michael Caine as Robert Spritzell, his father.
- 35:34Hope Davis as Noreen, Nicholas Holt as his son, Mike, and Jemaine de la Pena as Shelley, his daughter.
- 35:43Having just seen Renfield and then rewatching this movie, because I saw this movie when it came out,
- 35:47but rewatching it, seeing a young Nick Holt, I'm like, this is adorable.
- 35:52I had Peter make us a meme that's done real well on Reddit.
- 35:55Yeah, we're hot on Reddit right now. Follow us.
- 35:59I do love Nick Holt.
- 36:03I didn't look up anything about either movie before watching them.
- 36:06But Nick Holt is he's a great actor. Yeah.
- 36:08We just Sean and I watched Fury Road on Thursday.
- 36:11He's in that. He's in that. And he's fucking amazing in that movie.
- 36:14I'm just glad that he was he in that.
- 36:17Was he like spray paint? Yeah, he was.
- 36:20He was. Yeah, he was the war boys. He was the main one.
- 36:23He was Nux. Nice. Yeah.
- 36:26Shani and Crown. He's the one that kept calling him blood bag. Yeah.
- 36:30Yeah, I live or die. I live again.
- 36:34Witness me. That's crazy.
- 36:36I'll have to rewatch that after I'm done with Pee Wee's big like holiday.
- 36:40Yeah, there you go. Pee Wee's big what?
- 36:44That's dangerous with Pee Wee.
- 36:46Well, the very first note I took, I just need you to know that it says that his hair looks disgusting in this movie.
- 36:55Yes. Yeah. And that it it said hair is gross dot dot dot again, meaning which I forgot to mention, of course,
- 37:05but his hair was also just what the F is happening in Valley Girl.
- 37:09But I understood it was the 80s and they were all kind of like what the F hair. Yeah.
- 37:13But it just was it was a lot. And then here again in 2005. Yeah.
- 37:17Still bad. Still really bad.
- 37:20But bad in like a I don't know, like a sad dad kind of way that made it worse to me. Yeah.
- 37:26I mean, he was a sad dad. He was a sad dad. Yeah.
- 37:28It's every man's bad hair.
- 37:30Also, so we we write an interesting line with this for metrics we're tracking, you know, the good kid, bad kid line,
- 37:39because this one has both Shelly's a bitch. Shelly is my idol.
- 37:45How dare you? Like I want to take up archery. This sucks.
- 37:49I don't want to do it. Yes.
- 37:51So she sounds like a regular kid. Yeah.
- 37:53It's like so Shelly's like every other child in America. Great.
- 37:56I don't I don't interact with children normally. I'm going to play piano.
- 37:59Fuck this piano sucks.
- 38:02Wow. This is hard. I'm 38 and I'm still figuring out hobbies.
- 38:09Like, I'm sorry, guys, but this podcast probably has a big old fucking number over it.
- 38:15How many more episodes I got left in me.
- 38:17Then my 80 is going to take over and I'm going to be in fucking Puerto Rico.
- 38:21I'm going to teach it scuba lessons. I'm impressed we made it this far.
- 38:25I mean, I think we have enough audio of you now where we can chat GPT.
- 38:29I'm going to be on your side of this.
- 38:32The response will always be shut the fuck up, Sean.
- 38:34You're wrong about that.
- 38:35But how will you ever get my stories right?
- 38:39Most of them don't make sense. So it'll probably be fine.
- 38:43So Nicholas Cage.
- 38:46What's his name again? Dave. Dave Spritz.
- 38:49Dave Spritz is a local weather man in Chicago. Yeah.
- 38:53And he is trying out for a big national like morning show.
- 38:59And, you know, that's going to be great for him, except his kids don't really talk to him.
- 39:04His wife isn't talking to him and his dad is dying of probably cancer.
- 39:10All I want to say is lymph nodes and that's not right.
- 39:13And then I'm like tuberculosis and that's not right either.
- 39:16Yeah. I want to talk about Michael Caine's terrible American accent.
- 39:20Not great, but luckily he doesn't speak a lot.
- 39:23He's a generation with very few words for his son. So that's good for us.
- 39:28Even he's even though he's a writer, I do want to talk about my favorite Michael Caine line of all time.
- 39:36More fucking and dildo talk.
- 39:39It's always fucking and sucking and fucking and dildos.
- 39:43Also, listening to Sir Michael Caine describe in a bad American accent what a camel toe is.
- 39:50Yeah. Chef's kiss. I loved that.
- 39:54But I OK. So straight up, I did not realize he was trying to do an American accent.
- 40:01So it's very much like listeners, if that tells you anything.
- 40:06It's very much of the house school of American acting, the Hugh Laurie House School of American accent.
- 40:12You Laurie's American accent is fucking garbage.
- 40:16So bad. I think I just am bad at recognizing when people are doing bad American accents,
- 40:22and I just think that they have weird accents.
- 40:26I'm just like, why is this motherfucker trying to sound like this?
- 40:30What is what is he Laurie's new or newer show on HBO, the sci fi one?
- 40:35Oh, it's Avenue five or something. Yeah.
- 40:39One of the plot points is he does he does fake a bad American accent to be the captain, but he's just an actor.
- 40:46That was pretty good. I did enjoy that.
- 40:49You might as well been into it, right? Yeah. Loved it.
- 40:52So, yeah, Nicholas Cage. Cain. Yeah.
- 40:55It's also bad trying to get this trying to get this job that'll pay, you know, millions of dollars a year to read the weather.
- 41:03But trying to like get his life back together, get in touch with his kids and try and, you know,
- 41:08salvage his marriage. It's a real coming of age story for who?
- 41:12Someone my age. Unfortunately, all of us.
- 41:17Oh, my God. I saw myself in a lot of Nick Cage this week, and it made me sad.
- 41:22Oh, since you say it's a coming of age story, I was thinking about it earlier today about both of these movies.
- 41:29I was like, oh, it's weird. It's like Valley Girl was like a romantic comedy for me as a teenager.
- 41:37And this is like a romantic dark comedy for me as an adult.
- 41:43Because, yeah, this is just what love or life is.
- 41:46It's like you get old, the people who love you stop loving you.
- 41:50Then you're going to have to move to another city and probably die alone.
- 41:54That's that's a romantic story for your late 30s. Yeah.
- 41:59I'm really glad you're not actually here in the room to stare me in the eye as you say that.
- 42:05But we all felt it, didn't we? We did.
- 42:09I haven't been divorced so clearly. I know nothing. Yeah, you don't know anything.
- 42:14Yeah, you've never hardships. My life's been breezy.
- 42:19So easy. So what are you complaining about?
- 42:25I'm crying on the inside.
- 42:31Here's a clown, my friend. So Valley Girl. Yeah.
- 42:35You mean the weatherman, the weatherman.
- 42:38Yes. This was directed by Gore Verbinski, which I thought was kind of a weird.
- 42:42Yeah. I mean, this is like right before or around when he's doing pretty much only Pirates of the Caribbean movies,
- 42:49which is also strange. He has a very weird career.
- 42:53And then he ended up doing that fucking Lone Ranger movie with Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, which is also that fucking aged terribly.
- 43:00Yeah. He did a lot of like music videos like punk music videos and he played guitar on the soundtrack.
- 43:07Did so weird. Yeah. Hans Zimmer had him play the guitar.
- 43:11So all that like reggae guitar that they put together that they had just a little band and it was or verbatim.
- 43:19And a couple of guys that Hans Zimmer professionals can pull in.
- 43:24And so he directed it and then he came in and played guitar on it.
- 43:29I was surprised when I saw that it was a Zimmer score because it's like this movie gets weirder and weirder.
- 43:34This like plucky and plunky. And this movie doesn't sound like a traditional Zimmer.
- 43:39Well, it's not OK. Oh, man. I got something on this to Verbinski wanted this soundtrack.
- 43:46He's like, I want something that's like not Chicago, not this, that it's he's looking around.
- 43:53He's like, it's winter in Chicago. Give me some reggae.
- 43:58And he sent some photos of Chicago like in the winter and a picture of like a wall on a clock or a clock hanging on a wall
- 44:06because there's always clocks like in the backgrounds throughout the movie.
- 44:10He's like that. And he's like and play reggae music.
- 44:14And that's what he told Hans Zimmer. I do want to like pose a little thought question real quick.
- 44:19Imagine like a Zimmer score like a movie with a Zimmer score.
- 44:22Now imagine the same movie with a Danny Ulfman score like imagine.
- 44:26Imagine, imagine Tenet if Danny Ulfman did that score, that movie would be amazing.
- 44:33He would have actually done backwards music and that would have been fucking awesome.
- 44:37Oh, man. So like the entire score for the first part is then played backwards for the second half of the movie.
- 44:43And then all of a sudden it makes sense. And there's depth. Yeah. So where were we?
- 44:50Unfortunately, I think we were at camel toe.
- 44:54OK, so we haven't made it very far. Poor shell. I know. Poor little shell shell.
- 45:00Shelly definitely needs some I do. Help.
- 45:03I do like when he's trying to like talk to her about it.
- 45:07It's like, do kids ever like call you names or pick on you, like call you stupid or I don't know, camel toe subtle.
- 45:14That's like, yeah, people call me camel toe.
- 45:17Like, what do you think that means? Like means I'm tough like a camel's toe in the hot desert sand or whatever.
- 45:23Yeah, whatever she said. And he's like, you're right.
- 45:26Bless your sweet fucking heart, Shelly. I will never tell you otherwise.
- 45:30I love her. This is why she is. She's like my soul.
- 45:34You know, she just understands. And then we get a montage of cute outfits.
- 45:40Yeah. More montage. Yeah. Overlap. Montages, montages, lots of montage.
- 45:46Little girl trying on cute clothes and they all looked adorable.
- 45:51Every single one, I thought fucking sweet.
- 45:55Really was. I was like, Shelly, come on, girl.
- 46:00The costumer on this movie actually fucking killed it.
- 46:03Like, yeah, he did a lot of things like there was some behind the scenes stuff on the Blu Ray.
- 46:08And they were talking about how the costumer like put Michael Caine in slightly larger shirts throughout the whole movie so that it looked like he was shrinking inside of it.
- 46:19Like getting sicker. That's clever. Yeah.
- 46:21The things people don't realize. Yeah. Movie magic. Stagecraft.
- 46:25Figuring out Nicolas Cage is like tie selection.
- 46:28So like nothing really ever looks good and he never looks comfortable.
- 46:32Like the suit jacket doesn't fit right until the very end of the movie when he's in New York and then it's actually fitted properly and things like that.
- 46:41Well, so we know Nick Cage is in a bad place because he is a public figure, but like one that doesn't matter.
- 46:49And when people are always bugging him, they're like, no, what the what is it? The spritz? The spritz nipper?
- 46:54Yeah, the spritz nipper. The coldest day of the week.
- 46:57And he's always just like, leave me the fuck alone. I'm just trying to live my life.
- 47:00So every time he goes out, people like to peg him with like fast food.
- 47:04It's always fast food. It's always that food that like it's good in the moment, but you don't you know, it doesn't fill you.
- 47:10Thanks for taking my quote.
- 47:12Oh, I'm sorry. Oh, particularly like. Sorry Peter.
- 47:16The best part of that quote, though, is the end when he just sort of like somberly goes, I am fast food.
- 47:22All right, there's your quote. I wasn't going to do the whole quote. I forgot about that.
- 47:25I want to know, like, I really hope they tried to get like product placement in this with the selling point of do you want to see Nick Cage get pelted with chicken nuggets?
- 47:37Do you want to get biffed with the frosty?
- 47:40Gore Verbinski threw all of the fast food.
- 47:44He's like, and he did Nicholas Cage to know that if anybody was throwing it, it's just going to be me.
- 47:50And the chicken nuggets were my favorite one.
- 47:53That's brilliant.
- 47:54But sometimes it was like multiple takes. So he's just like throwing boxes of nuggets.
- 47:59Pelt him with nuggets. Nugged.
- 48:02Standing like three feet away, throwing an apple pie at him.
- 48:06Like the footage of it was all terrific.
- 48:09I just want to see the photos of it backstage.
- 48:11It was like the biggest grin on Gore Verbinski's face as he's just chucking the nuts.
- 48:20He's really enjoying himself.
- 48:22So the whole extras on that disk were great.
- 48:26So what I mean, let's just kind of are there any scenes we want to specifically talk about?
- 48:30This movie is more of a meandering kind of view of this man's life.
- 48:34Like the Ark is him trying to get this job, which he eventually does get.
- 48:37But everything else is kind of vignettes of his father dying and him getting like reconnecting with his children and kicking the ass of a pedophile.
- 48:46I'd argue that the Ark is actually trying to like regain the life that he lost.
- 48:52Like that's his whole thing. He's like trying to like put his life back together.
- 48:56But in the end, it's you know that he didn't need that life he needed to like get over it.
- 49:02Well, in that effort of him trying to rebuild the life he thought he wanted was more destructive to his family than him actually just living his own life.
- 49:11Right.
- 49:12Build it next.
- 49:14What's our third movie?
- 49:17Pee Wee's Big Holiday.
- 49:19Here was my watch.
- 49:21Here was my connecting tissue for these both.
- 49:23Both these movies is his realization and his moment of like where his character kind of moves on is done with just an act of assault.
- 49:33Because that's when he kind of like, no, I'm all right.
- 49:35This after he like shows up at this dude's house, who's supposed to be his son's counselor for drug rehab, but is grooming.
- 49:43So Nick Cage like just rocks up to the dude's house, just kicks his ass on the like on the doorstep and says, you know, you're going to leave my kid alone.
- 49:49You're going to tell them what you did.
- 49:51And then just like go to the mall and as a corndog with his son.
- 49:54I kind of took that as his lowest point, not necessarily what turned him around, but like where he really kind of hit bottom where he had nothing else in the in the can.
- 50:04But it was when he was having the conversation with Michael Cain in the car and Cain revisits what Cage was saying at his living funeral before the power went out.
- 50:18Nicholas Cage just says when I think of my father, I think of what is it?
- 50:24Yeah. Bruce Springsteen, like a rock.
- 50:26So who sings it? I don't know. No, I don't think it's not Bruce Springsteen, but yeah, like a chase fact checking Bob Seeger.
- 50:33There we go. That's it's also a BS name. It's boomer music. So it's it's whatever.
- 50:39Yeah, it's good. And then so his dad brings this up in the thing and he's like, I don't I don't understand.
- 50:48He comes back to it. Nicholas Cage explains like it's the part about like, you know, the emotional parts of it that he connected with his father or connected to his father about being a tough guy and not needing anybody else.
- 51:01But like always being there for his family and things like that, he was always, you know, just a solid, real good dude. And Michael Cain, like upon hearing that is like, oh, and then he gives Cage the advice that like like fast food.
- 51:20Some things in this life just need to be chucked. Do you want this job? Do you want like the family's not going to be there? You have to just let it go.
- 51:30And you know, you are right. The fight scene when he goes and kicks that guy, that is his lowest point. But it's everything after that, like that's what kind of pushes into him finally connecting with his father, him reconnecting with his son.
- 51:42It's the catalyst. It's the catalyst for all the good stuff that came with him just beating up a guy.
- 51:48He also slaps a guy with his gloves at one point.
- 51:51So this is my favorite quote, but I do want to just do the voiceover real quick from the glove slapping. So when he slaps him with the glove, there's a voiceover and it's just Nicolas Cage saying, here's something that if you want your father to think you're not a silly fuck, don't slap a guy across the face with a glove.
- 52:11Because if you do that, that's what he will think. Unless you're a nobleman or something in the 19th century, which I am not.
- 52:20That's a great line. This movie is full of edits. I think mostly in the voiceover, just fucking banger lines and the voiceover was all recorded pre like prior to the movie.
- 52:33No shit. Interesting. Like so he didn't have any like connection to the scene. He was just reading the voiceover, which is what he did.
- 52:42And then it just piped in the lines. That's pretty fascinating, actually, because he does sound so disaffected through most of that voiceover. And like if you really had gotten into the character more, you maybe wouldn't have gotten that same type of reading.
- 52:54That's clever. Gore Verbinski, who knew?
- 52:57Beginning of the movie, it's like he's washing his face and it's refreshing. That's refreshing. I'm refreshing.
- 53:07That's so great for that character, because that character is so checked out from life. Does anyone's quote have the word dildo in it?
- 53:14No.
- 53:15Mine are when he goes to his ex-wife's house for the first time and they get into a fight because, or not the first time, he takes Shelley to the work event and she tears an ACL in a sack race on ice, which seems dumb. And he makes her finish and she gets hurt. So he's getting into a fight with his ex-wife.
- 53:37This guy comes out and tells him to back off and he's like, who the fuck are you? And he just goes like, and they start getting into it and he's like, fuck you, fat ass. Dildo.
- 53:48And then later they get into a fight again. And it's like, you called me a dildo. And he goes, you are a dildo, pork fucker. Fucker.
- 53:59I just love his pauses before he finishes his insults. Pork fucker. Fucker. Pork fucker. Fucker.
- 54:08Mine's pretty long here, but it's a pretty important one to my haiku. I've got the tartar sauce quote here.
- 54:16Nice.
- 54:17It's a flashback to a scene, Nicolas Cage in voiceover tells you like, if you don't want to like fuck up your marriage, don't forget the tartar sauce. And so we get this scene of him and his wife still married.
- 54:30He's going out, like stepping out to pick up the delivery, the food and or the takeout. And she's like, as he's leaving, she's like, don't forget the tartar sauce.
- 54:41So now we've just got a voiceover of Nick Cage walking through the Chicago snow on like street corners down to pick up the takeout.
- 54:51So he walks up to a street corner. There's a chick standing there in really tight pants. And he's just looking down at her ass as the voiceover goes. Tartar sauce. Tartar sauce.
- 55:03Man, I'd like to put my face in there. Right in there. Tartar sauce. My hips are cold. Tartar sauce. That's when you know it's cold. I like eating pussy. Tartar sauce. A lot of guys don't.
- 55:16Well, maybe they do. Maybe that's just black guys. Tartar sauce. What happened to the guy who was trying to fly around the world in a balloon? Did he make it?
- 55:26I should put some espionage or stolen plutonium in my novel. Tartar sauce. Spice it up. Neil Young. Fuck, it's cold. Neil Young.
- 55:36Why am I thinking about Neil Young? Neil Diamond. Neil. It's not a lot of famous Neils. Is this Wednesday? I wish I had two dicks.
- 55:46I thought the whole family was going to learn Spanish together this year. That never really happened. I haven't had a Spanish omelet in a long time. Here we go. As he crosses the street and enters the market.
- 56:01So it's a long line, but man, that's a great one. Yeah, I knew that was going to be like I was thinking I'm like, I forgot about this line. I love it. And I started typing it out. I'm like, Nick's going to pick it.
- 56:12Did you have a quote, Shay? I don't have a quote from the movie, but I have something else I'm going to say. Yeah, I don't have a quote either. So go ahead. Sorry I stole your quote. That's okay. I am fast food.
- 56:23So I don't have a quote from the movie, but I have a quote from myself. Amazing. Because my so okay, my partner and I, she tells me to write things down sometimes, especially when I'm high, which is well, a lot.
- 56:41And so I said something to her during the watching of this movie. And she starts chuckling, mostly because I'm sure she thinks I'm an idiot. And she's like, you, you need to write that one down. You're not going to remember to say that you're not.
- 57:02I think you need to say it. So I don't know what creepy guy, but I'm assuming the molesty pedophile guy to see if a mustache. Yes. Okay. He has like a goatee. Yep. It kind of looks like Dante from clerks. Oh, yeah. Good. The goatee. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
- 57:21So my note to myself is that I knew that creepy guy was creepy immediately. When we saw him on when we saw him come into the house, like that guy's bad news. That character. No. And my quote is that guy, if you take his beard off, he's that one guy. So whatever that means.
- 57:42He was that one guy for sure. So especially without the beard without the beard that guy. He's that one guy.
- 57:48You're not wrong, though, like from the moment you see him from the moment you see him, though, he is a fucking creep. He is a fucking creeper town. Mike Holt and his buddy are looking at a sweater and he like rolls up and he's like, it's a nice sweater. What are you guys doing here? Like we're buying clothes.
- 58:06It's like, yeah, I'm looking at clothes, too. It's like, you get out of here. I do like the art. I do like the closing arc, though, of the entire film. People like are just like, what's going to be the coldest? Like, what's the nipper? And he's just telling people to fuck off because he's like, I'm trying to just go to the DMV. And then the end of the movie is practicing archery and the guy's like, hey, you're the weather guy. You know, what's what's the weather going to be like to her? And she's like, who knows? Is it going to rain? Yeah, maybe. Yeah, I thought this was a really
- 58:36awesome movie. I'm glad I watched it now because I don't think if I watched it in 2005, it would have connected with me because I'm not a sad fuck. I wasn't a sad fuck then. I've always been a sad fuck.
- 58:48But you are now. Yeah.
- 58:50But like I remember I was really excited to return to this one because I did watch it when it first came out on DVD. Like my friend got it like on Netflix when they sent you discs. And I really I remember really enjoying it, but had never revisited it until now.
- 59:04And happy to say I'm like, wow, I like that. You know, then I like it now. Good cage. Good movie is my vote. Yeah, absolutely. I was kind of just so so about the movie personally.
- 59:15Sorry, it was a little boring in my opinion, but it was, I thought, good. Nicholas Cage, despite my lack of interest in the movie. So I'm going to say a pass on the movie. But like, good on you, cage. Yeah, I'm kind of in the same boat.
- 59:31I sort of tuned out of this movie quite a bit. It was the color palette of it. It's like it's it's filmed in a really good way. But it's in like that 2005. Everything is washed out kind of like that was intentional. It was shot.
- 59:44So everything was that I think he calls it blaze that kind of blueish age, except for the interior of his ex's home, which is warm and inviting. So every time you see him outside looking in and it's warm inside, he's put outside of it. Yeah, it's clever.
- 1:00:00It's clever, but it just it like tires my eyes out. And I know that that's the point. But like, I want to enjoy the movie and not be bored by looking at it. I'm a mole person and my favorite color is brown. So this color palette was fine with me. I'm going to slowly scritch my chair over next to the monitor. So it looks like Nick and I are both staring at you about your opinions on this. You can I mean, my vote doesn't matter. Okay, what do you think should go forward? Your vote doesn't matter. But yeah, it'd be nice to hear. Yeah. Which one goes?
- 1:00:29It wins this match. Yeah, I would say Valley Girl just again, because I think it's just a little bit to me. It was it held my interest a little bit more. And I like campy shit and fucking campy. So that's it's a time capsule for sure. Right. And even with the problematic part, I mean, what movie in the 80s again is not a little bit problematic. I mean, it's no parkies. Yeah. Nicholas Cage, the hero of the film drops the word.
- 1:00:57Well, we'll just say the British word for cigarette at one point really quickly. So then I don't know. But even despite that, I'm going to say that it was held my interest a lot more, even if it was just for the nostalgia. Well, we know I'm a sad boy who likes sad things. The National put out a new album this week, and I've been just fucking sitting on my couch drinking whiskey and crying. So I'm going to go with the sad movie. I I loved both these films, but Weatherman speaks to me more.
- 1:01:27I totally agree. I enjoy Valley Girl a lot and I will watch it again. But in terms of like better movie, Weatherman was a huge sleeper. And it just is so good. Like, it's incredibly well constructed as a movie. The script is really good. Nicholas Cage's performance. I loved even just like how dead it was.
- 1:01:55It was right. It was the right performance for that character. Yeah. Intentionally dead is different than like left behind. Yeah. Dead. And just being so out of place in his own life, like he didn't even fit in his own life. Like he didn't know how to like walk down the street. He was always living in fear. I I fucking loved it. I I thought it was great. And I can't wait to like, go back and really try to like, find more of the little bits of symbolism.
- 1:02:24And things that are hidden in the movie. Awesome. Cool. All right, we're back on the same page. Yeah. Weatherman moves on. Yeah. What are we watching next? Yeah. So next up, we've got the serious bracket. We are still in the six seeds versus the 11th. And this is a Scorsese's bringing out the dead with a script written by our favorite dude, Paul Schrader. We thought we were done with him, but we're not. What? The man is a name for a reason. He's just a terrible director. He's a terrible director. But I'm not sure.
- 1:02:54I think he does fine writing and obviously Scorsese is Scorsese. But anyway, yeah. So it's bringing out the dead going up against Cage's return to John Woo with Windtalkers. Oh, so it's going to be fucking three hours. Yeah, it's kind of a cool one. It's about like Apache.
- 1:03:09Outbreakers. Which is pretty fucking neat. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think unfortunately, it's not a great movie. I was gonna say it's an interesting topic. I'm excited to watch it. I mean, I always find something within a Nick Cage performance to to enjoy.
- 1:03:22Shea, do you have anything that you wanted to plug? Well, I have a small kind of new founded queer arts collective. Cool. Cis Riot. That's S Y S. R I O T at Cis Riot on the Insta. You know, we're just very brand new. And we're we did our first kind of cabaret of sorts of it was a queer
- 1:03:50pajama party 90s blast. In the fall, we're going to do another one coming up this fall with a fancier name place the given. It's going to be in October. More specific details later but follow at Cis Riot like system riot. Yeah. Also, when you hear it, it might make you think of other things.
- 1:04:10Yeah, I like it. purposeful. Right. Well, thank you very much for being here. Thank you for having me. I really enjoyed it. And yeah, if you need somebody weird to come back. - 1:04:55No.
- 1:04:56Nick.
- 1:05:01Fuck you.
- 1:05:09Bye.
- 1:05:15Can you just open carry a bow in New York City. I mean, I don't know, New York's bow and arrow laws.
- 1:05:25I know way too far away and I don't fucking care to look it up. It's never been my life goal to know the bow and arrow laws of every major metropolitan area. But it is now.
- 1:05:40I should really pre screen these because we're letting people go off and just say like unfiltered shit like if she came out here and he's like, yeah, I got something to say about Puerto Ricans. And it's like, whoa.
- 1:05:55As long as it's that I love them all.
- 1:05:58Then that he I mean, yeah.
- 1:06:04I got really distracted by this big thing Nick whipped out.
- 1:06:10Giant sandwich.
- 1:06:13It was getting huge. I didn't expect it.
