- 1:02Insert theme song here. This is the Daily Starcast. I give you the news and maybe a laugh.
- 1:07I'm Lindsay Varnick and today is October 19th, 2026. Guys, I hate how cold it's
- 1:12getting. Like, it's so cold and it's only like 60 degrees. I like forgot about winter.
- 1:18I was like so happy in summer and you like forget.
- 1:22It's so funny. Like when you're in winter, you forget how nice summer is,
- 1:26and when you're in summer, you forget how bad winter is.
- 1:30And then it, like, hits you one day, and you're like, oh my god,
- 1:33I forgot this season existed.
- 1:36Or maybe that's just me. I don't know.
- 1:38So in real news, more than 30 years after the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson
- 1:43and Ron Goldman, the OJ Simpson case is back in the news because there's still some unopened folders.
- 1:51Okay, so So there were these previously sealed federal records about Joseph
- 1:55Joey Ippolito, who was in prison for drug trafficking, and he was connected
- 2:00to the mob, and he knew OJ through their mutual friend.
- 2:04And then Ippolito later became a federal informant and had given police information
- 2:09about the missing murder weapon, which, as we all know, was never recovered.
- 2:14But this is where things get a little weird. So Ippolito's brother,
- 2:18Sam, one time told the Times that on the night of the murders in 1994,
- 2:23Joey came home with blood on his hands and a really heavy bag.
- 2:27And sam was like my brother asked me to get rid of it and then so he did and
- 2:32he threw that bag into a dumpster.
- 2:35But now before we all start treating this like a new episode of making a murder
- 2:39there are some major caveats with this,
- 2:42so sam later recanted a part of his account when the times said that they weren't
- 2:47going to pay him for his interview so he was like no just kidding that didn't
- 2:51happen, which is like super sketch.
- 2:54And also it does not prove that the bag contained the murder weapon or that
- 2:58Ippolito helped commit the murders.
- 3:00He just happened to come home that night with blood on his hands and a heavy
- 3:05bag and he knows OJ, you know, all the same.
- 3:09So obviously nothing is solved, but this is a new investigation about a case
- 3:15that has fascinated us all for decades on end and what sucks now is that oj,
- 3:21died as we know so like we're never gonna be able to get the truth out of him
- 3:26for real for real and the murder weapon is still missing i mean who knows where
- 3:31that you know who knows where that is by now.
- 3:35So 30 years later, this case somehow contains more loose ends than any really old sweater.
- 3:41And that's not the best joke, and I'm sorry.
- 3:44Well, we have our first World Series team, and it's the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 3:50And they're heading to the World Series for the first time since 1982.
- 3:56So Milwaukee beat the LA Dodgers in four games.
- 4:00Like if the dodgers won they would have possibly won three consecutive world
- 4:04series titles in a row so i think it's for the best that somebody else got a chance to win,
- 4:12but even in game four the dodgers were winning four to zero including a three-run
- 4:17home run so everyone was like obviously the dodgers are going to win but then
- 4:21milwaukee came back and won six to four,
- 4:25so the milwaukee team finished the regular season with 103 wins like that's
- 4:31a lot of wins so they didn't just like get lucky they actually like really worked
- 4:35hard at this and they were a really good team,
- 4:39and the dodgers team has some of baseball's biggest stars so that's like pretty cool of them right.
- 4:45So now the Brewers are just one win away from their first World Series title in franchise history.
- 4:51The World Series starts this Friday, October 23rd.
- 4:56Milwaukee will either play the Cleveland Guardians or the Tampa Bay Rays.
- 5:00So those two teams literally have to battle it out first.
- 5:03I know it's not the most exciting of teams, but if you live in any of those cities, it is.
- 5:09Baseball, the world's most unexciting sport, and this year the most unexciting World Series.
- 5:15Okay this is a bit of a random one so there's this guy his name is sean oliver
- 5:19and he was the republican nominee for lieutenant governor of massachusetts,
- 5:24and now he's no longer the republican nominee for lieutenant governor of massachusetts
- 5:29because he got arrested this weekend after,
- 5:33overturning his car like he crashed his car into five part cars like not one
- 5:41not two not three parked cars, five parked cars he hit.
- 5:46So then he got arrested, obviously, and got a DUI along with a bunch of other
- 5:51driving-related offenses.
- 5:53I think it's safe to say this was not the kind of campaign event his team had
- 5:57planned for the weekend.
- 5:58This is a reminder that political campaigns can take months or years to build
- 6:03and just one weekend to dismantle.
- 6:06At least, I don't feel like the worst driver anymore.
- 6:09In Lindsay life, I had three different friends cancel plans on me this weekend,
- 6:15like for all different reasons. Crazy, right?
- 6:19I had a higher cancellation rate than a budget airline.
- 6:23For thing of the week this week, I am doing the two recent tragedies that have
- 6:28happened in our country.
- 6:29Along with the million and five other things that are currently on my mind,
- 6:34this one is definitely on my mind too.
- 6:37So as we all know, on Thursday, a 16-year-old former student opened fire at
- 6:42Silver Rail Elementary school in Bend, Oregon, killing three kids,
- 6:46ages 5, 8, and 11, and their teacher, 25-year-old Megan Lambert.
- 6:52The shooter was Griffin J. John II. He went to the school as a special needs student.
- 6:58So that day, he went up to the school carrying a shotgun. He shot at a pickup
- 7:03truck after the driver said something to him and then climbed over the fence
- 7:07to the school and shot through the glass panels of the school's locked entrance doors.
- 7:12And then he entered a mixed-age special education classroom that was near the
- 7:16entrance and just opened fire.
- 7:19He shot as many as 15 rounds.
- 7:22All of the people killed and hurt in the attack were in that classroom.
- 7:26The three children who died were boys. A seven-year-old student and a 54-year-old
- 7:31special education teacher, Becky Drury, was also critically injured and hospitalized.
- 7:37One of the teachers in the classroom threw her cell phone at the shooter when
- 7:41he started, and then she tackled him and tried to wrestle the gun away from him.
- 7:45Like, that is so brave beyond words. I can't even imagine.
- 7:50And then also, while this is happening at the same time, a father who had two
- 7:55kids at the school happened to be there, and he did follow the shooter inside.
- 8:01So this father was legally carrying a handgun, and then when he went into the
- 8:05classroom and saw what was going on, he shot and killed the teenager.
- 8:09So because of this teacher who tackled the shooter and this parent who killed
- 8:15the shooter, they were able to prevent further loss of life.
- 8:19Megan Lambert was a first-year teacher, and she literally called this job her dream job.
- 8:26She grew up in Bend, and she spent years substituting at Silver Rail,
- 8:30and she was also a volunteer volleyball coach there.
- 8:33She loved the kids there so much, especially those with special needs.
- 8:37She even wouldn't even take her coaching pay so that children whose families
- 8:42couldn't afford to participate could still play.
- 8:45And then on Saturday, another tragedy happened in Wichita, Kansas.
- 8:50A pickup truck drove onto a soccer field at a sports complex during a youth
- 8:54soccer game, killing six-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schaefer.
- 9:00They were both from McPherson, Kansas, and 10 other people were hurt.
- 9:05The driver is a 34-year-old woman, and she was taken into custody after the crash.
- 9:11But yesterday, police released her after consulting with prosecutors.
- 9:15They're still waiting for toxicology results and a mechanical inspection of
- 9:19the truck to help determine what happened.
- 9:21As of yesterday, no charges have been filed, and police haven't established
- 9:26yet if the crash was intentional or not.
- 9:28In both of these cases, people were doing things that they're doing every day,
- 9:32a part of a regular childhood.
- 9:34They're going to school they're playing a sport they're just hanging out with their family,
- 9:38and in both of these stories families lives changed in an instant,
- 9:43and you know we can't protect ourselves or anyone else from these everyday things
- 9:49where something horrible can happen you know literally anywhere at any time,
- 9:54so I think right now that it's just remembering for a second how much we take
- 9:58for granted about these everyday things that we do and we do them without fear.
- 10:02And of course, we should always still be able to do them without fear.
- 10:06But, you know, just taking for granted what we have. And, you know,
- 10:10we never know what could happen tomorrow.
- 10:13And that is quite a way to start off your Monday.
- 10:16Cooking tip of the day. If your pasta water tastes like the ocean,
- 10:20you've added too much salt.
