- 0:42Speaker 1: The more context the better. But what have we got today?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Before I get into this week's submission, I just want
- 0:47Speaker 2: to let you know that there is a trigger warning
- 0:49Speaker 2: here that this episode discusses suicidal ideation, and if anything
- 0:52Speaker 2: here resonates with you at all, please know that support
- 0:54Speaker 2: is available In Australia. Lifeline is thirteen eleven fourteen and
- 0:58Speaker 2: Beyond Blue thirteen hundred twenty two forty six thirty six
- 1:03Speaker 2: free confidential and available twenty four to seven. I don't
- 1:07Speaker 2: know if I want to be here anymore. I'm a
- 1:09Speaker 2: thirty two year old mum to three beautiful children and
- 1:12Speaker 2: I have the most loving husband, but lately I've been
- 1:15Speaker 2: feeling like there's something wrong with me, and sometimes I
- 1:17Speaker 2: wonder if it would even matter if I was around.
- 1:20Speaker 2: The reason is something that probably sounds silly to other people,
- 1:23Speaker 2: but I actually don't have any friends. I feel incredibly
- 1:26Speaker 2: lonely at work. I'm always left out. People I thought
- 1:29Speaker 2: with My friends never make an effort anymore. They often
- 1:32Speaker 2: cancel when I try to organize something. I even ask
- 1:35Speaker 2: my husband if there was something wrong with me. Maybe
- 1:37Speaker 2: I'm weird and just don't realize it. He's been so
- 1:40Speaker 2: loving and so reassuring, but I still can't stop questioning myself.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I've always been naturally shy, but after being rejected so
- 1:46Speaker 2: many times, I've become even more withdrawn. I'm now scared
- 1:49Speaker 2: to make an effort because it feels like people are
- 1:51Speaker 2: only nice to my face, and that's where it ends.
- 1:54Speaker 2: I've been trying to put myself out there. I joined pilates,
- 1:57Speaker 2: I've been friendly with other parents through my kids, and
- 1:59Speaker 2: I genuinely try to connect with people. Nothing seems to
- 2:02Speaker 2: turn into real life friendship, and it honestly makes me
- 2:05Speaker 2: so deeply sad. I see women with close girlfriends those
- 2:09Speaker 2: quote unquote soul sister type friendships, and I wish I
- 2:12Speaker 2: had that too, something that reminds me that I'm more
- 2:15Speaker 2: than just a mum and just a wife. But I'm
- 2:17Speaker 2: starting to feel like it's going to never happen for me,
- 2:19Speaker 2: and if I'm honest, what really hurts is that I
- 2:22Speaker 2: can't understand why I'm not confrontational, and I can't think
- 2:25Speaker 2: of any major conflict or reason why people pull away
- 2:27Speaker 2: from me, So I start wondering if there's just something
- 2:29Speaker 2: about me that puts people off. I've gotten to the
- 2:32Speaker 2: point where I question everything about myself. Am I weird?
- 2:35Speaker 2: Am I too much? Am I embarrassing? Do my children
- 2:38Speaker 2: and husband secretly think the same thing but too kind
- 2:40Speaker 2: to say it. I sometimes even wonder if I'm a
- 2:43Speaker 2: burden or if people would be better off without me.
- 2:45Speaker 2: I know how lucky I am to have my children
- 2:47Speaker 2: and husband, and I'm grateful for them every day, but
- 2:50Speaker 2: the loneliness still hurts, and it hurts to think that
- 2:52Speaker 2: I had genuine connections with people, only to realize that
- 2:55Speaker 2: maybe I didn't. I just want to know if anyone
- 2:57Speaker 2: else has ever felt like this before, and how you
- 2:59Speaker 2: got through it. I keep trying to tell myself that
- 3:01Speaker 2: it shouldn't matter so much, but deep down it really does.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Loneliness is one of the hardest, most uncomfortable emotions I
- 3:10Speaker 1: think we feel. I definitely have felt like that before.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I felt like an outcast my whole life, even in
- 3:15Speaker 1: high school, Like, yeah, I had friends, but I never
- 3:18Speaker 1: really felt like I belonged. Was felt like the black
- 3:20Speaker 1: sheep of everyone, just different and yeah, everyone had their besties.
- 3:25Speaker 1: And I've definitely felt like that before, and I think
- 3:27Speaker 1: there's different seasons where you'll feel like that. I'm really
- 3:29Speaker 1: sorry you're going through that because it is really really hard,
- 3:32Speaker 1: and we'll obviously go deep into it, but I want
- 3:35Speaker 1: you to just not to give up, keep putting yourself
- 3:37Speaker 1: out there. When we met, I was going through a
- 3:39Speaker 1: friendship breakdown of someone that I thought would be my
- 3:41Speaker 1: friend forever. You were going through a bit of a
- 3:44Speaker 1: lonely season. You moved up from the Gold Coast, you
- 3:45Speaker 1: hadn't really found your people yet, and we just kept
- 3:49Speaker 1: putting ourselves out there, kept being friendly, saying hello, doing
- 3:51Speaker 1: the things. And you never know when someone's going to
- 3:54Speaker 1: come into your life, and if you energetically close off,
- 3:57Speaker 1: you won't find anyone. And I think that's something that's
- 4:00Speaker 1: really hard to do, and even after hurt, like it's
- 4:03Speaker 1: not easy to put yourself out there. But I just
- 4:05Speaker 1: value friendship and sisterhood so much that I refuse to
- 4:09Speaker 1: put a wall up, no matter how much hurt, no
- 4:11Speaker 1: matter how weird I thought I was, or how much
- 4:14Speaker 1: I would tell myself that no one's going to love
- 4:16Speaker 1: me and I'm always second choice or anything like that,
- 4:18Speaker 1: I refuse. And I'm so glad that I stuck by that.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I just want to encourage you to keep putting yourself
- 4:23Speaker 1: out there. Maybe you've gone to Platies class, but maybe
- 4:26Speaker 1: it's not the Plati's class, or maybe you need to
- 4:28Speaker 1: go and spark some more conversations, put yourself on more groups,
- 4:32Speaker 1: more hobbies, and just keep on going. Like anything in life,
- 4:35Speaker 1: if something hasn't worked out, you don't give up. You
- 4:37Speaker 1: keep trying. Yeah, keep trying. Putting yourselves in the rooms
- 4:40Speaker 1: with the line people. And this is not a shameless plug,
- 4:43Speaker 1: but like our retreats and our events, this is a
- 4:45Speaker 1: big core reason why we do what we do. Because
- 4:47Speaker 1: we once felt alone and like we didn't belong. We
- 4:50Speaker 1: want to be in the rooms with like minded women
- 4:52Speaker 1: and we know other women are craving that. That's why
- 4:54Speaker 1: we bring these events together. Our first couple events, we
- 4:56Speaker 1: didn't even make money off that. We were just like
- 4:57Speaker 1: we didn't care. Now this cost us money. We want
- 5:00Speaker 1: to bring our community to this safe place and give
- 5:02Speaker 1: them evidence of how beautiful safe sisterhood is and show
- 5:06Speaker 1: them a good time, you know, and open our hearts
- 5:08Speaker 1: to these women. Please don't give up. Yeah, that's one
- 5:11Speaker 1: thing I wanted to say.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I love that. It's so beautiful. I also have felt
- 5:15Speaker 2: like that too. I think for like most of my life.
- 5:19Speaker 2: To be honest, most of my life, I'm very grateful
- 5:21Speaker 2: to say that I've had you know, my family and
- 5:24Speaker 2: like my siblings and stuff throughout some of my hardest
- 5:28Speaker 2: seasons in life. And also there were times where I
- 5:30Speaker 2: was also not that close with them as well, so
- 5:32Speaker 2: you know, I definitely feel like outside of that, I
- 5:34Speaker 2: remember thinking to myself one day like I was like,
- 5:36Speaker 2: I have no one. I remember my birthday coming around
- 5:38Speaker 2: and being like, fuck, I have no one. And even
- 5:41Speaker 2: though there were people in my life, it was like
- 5:42Speaker 2: it wasn't the right fit, you know. And even through school,
- 5:45Speaker 2: same thing. I always felt so different. I never could
- 5:48Speaker 2: laugh at the same jokes as what everybody else laughed at,
- 5:51Speaker 2: because I just was like, I don't find that funny,
- 5:53Speaker 2: or you know, they were all behaving a certain way,
- 5:55Speaker 2: and I never resonated with their behavior, and I was
- 5:57Speaker 2: just like, why do I feel so isolated surrounded by people?
- 6:02Speaker 2: And it was in primary school that I felt that.
- 6:04Speaker 2: It was high school that I felt that it was
- 6:06Speaker 2: in when I went to Tafe. It felt like that
- 6:08Speaker 2: every season of my life I have had a lonely season. Yeah,
- 6:12Speaker 2: and then there's been times where I've been super connected
- 6:14Speaker 2: with people and then gone through the withdrawal phase and
- 6:16Speaker 2: then been so lonely and isolated that I literally I
- 6:18Speaker 2: had known in my life, so I can understand, like
- 6:21Speaker 2: why you're feeling the way that you're feeling. And what
- 6:23Speaker 2: I hear in the I don't want to be here
- 6:25Speaker 2: anymore is defeat.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Feel defeated, like there's no light at the end of
- 6:30Speaker 1: the time.
- 6:31Speaker 2: It's just it for me, and I get that. What
- 6:33Speaker 2: also really helped me was when I was going through
- 6:35Speaker 2: the lonely season and I was really challenged by life,
- 6:39Speaker 2: like I felt like a victim of it at one point,
- 6:41Speaker 2: like I felt like poor me, Like why doesn't anybody
- 6:45Speaker 2: like me and this, and that I have no friends
- 6:47Speaker 2: and like all these things. And whilst it was valid
- 6:48Speaker 2: for me to feel that the victimhood also wasn't serving me. Yes,
- 6:53Speaker 2: And what I realized in that season was, yeah, sure,
- 6:56Speaker 2: maybe there's nobody in my life right now, But what
- 6:58Speaker 2: am I doing to support myself through this season? And
- 7:01Speaker 2: I remember like going through this big, huge, like what
- 7:04Speaker 2: felt like an awaken was being able to lean on myself.
- 7:08Speaker 2: So I remember getting so frustrated this one time and
- 7:10Speaker 2: being like, I have no fucking one to go with
- 7:12Speaker 2: this concept that I want to go to, no one
- 7:14Speaker 2: that I want to go to this, or nobody that
- 7:16Speaker 2: i'd invite to who would actually like going to this?
- 7:18Speaker 2: And then I remember thinking to myself, like, why am
- 7:20Speaker 2: I stopping myself from enjoying my life just because I
- 7:23Speaker 2: quote unquote don't have anybody to go with? And then
- 7:25Speaker 2: I started taking myself on lunch dates, and then I
- 7:28Speaker 2: started going to things by myself and going to business
- 7:30Speaker 2: conferences and being like, you know what, I don't need someone.
- 7:32Speaker 2: I don't need a buffer person in order to enjoy
- 7:34Speaker 2: my life. And being able to do that help me
- 7:38Speaker 2: build a relationship with myself that I didn't know that
- 7:40Speaker 2: I needed because at the time, I was so focused
- 7:44Speaker 2: on how there wasn't anybody in my life and how
- 7:46Speaker 2: I felt lonely and I felt different. I felt like
- 7:48Speaker 2: an outcast, and I felt like nobody understood me. I
- 7:51Speaker 2: didn't give a shit about how I felt in my
- 7:52Speaker 2: own body. I wasn't a friend to myself, I wasn't kind.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I was judging myself for not having any friends. I
- 7:58Speaker 2: didn't even like the person that I was, and so
- 8:00Speaker 2: I was like this big season of me kind of
- 8:02Speaker 2: doing an audit on myself and my life and going, Okay, well,
- 8:06Speaker 2: if I don't have anybody around right now, like, how
- 8:08Speaker 2: do I want my life to look if this season
- 8:11Speaker 2: could be about growth for me and about not other people.
- 8:13Speaker 2: But actually it's trying to show me something about myself,
- 8:15Speaker 2: which is to want to acknowledge and sit with my
- 8:17Speaker 2: loneliness and support myself through that. But what would it
- 8:21Speaker 2: look like if I would actually start to enjoy my
- 8:23Speaker 2: life again? What do I like? What don't I like?
- 8:27Speaker 2: What's important to me, what's not important to me? What
- 8:29Speaker 2: do I stand for? What don't I stand for? What
- 8:31Speaker 2: pisses me off? What makes me happy. Like, actually understanding
- 8:35Speaker 2: the person that I spend the most time with was
- 8:38Speaker 2: honestly one of the most powerful things that I've ever
- 8:41Speaker 2: done for myself. And I didn't realize how little I
- 8:45Speaker 2: actually knew myself until I had to be faced with
- 8:48Speaker 2: being alone.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Wow, what I'm hearing from you too is just like
- 8:51Speaker 1: an invitation for her to really learn to be her
- 8:54Speaker 1: own best friend right now. And it's not to close
- 8:56Speaker 1: off and be like, oh, well, I'm gonna have to
- 8:57Speaker 1: be my own best friend forever. I'm alone, I'm a loser.
- 8:59Speaker 2: I know.
- 9:00Speaker 1: It's like, utilize this time to get to know who
- 9:02Speaker 1: you are. And I imagine now so that you've done
- 9:05Speaker 1: that and you're so grounded and anchored and who you
- 9:06Speaker 1: are and what you love about yourself, you only attracted
- 9:09Speaker 1: more of those kind of friendships into your life that
- 9:12Speaker 1: are really aligned and feel really good because you did
- 9:15Speaker 1: that work and you went through that season absolutely well.
- 9:17Speaker 2: When you don't know yourself, when you're presented into new
- 9:20Speaker 2: friend groups, you get real anxious.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I remember I used to do that all the time,
- 9:23Speaker 2: where I'd go into new friend groups and I wouldn't
- 9:25Speaker 2: even know how to be Yeah, what if they don't
- 9:28Speaker 2: like me, and what if they have something to say
- 9:30Speaker 2: about me?
- 9:30Speaker 1: What if I say something wrong?
- 9:31Speaker 2: What if I fuck up? Like I was just constantly
- 9:33Speaker 2: in my head about what I was going to do wrong.
- 9:35Speaker 2: But then when I kind of met myself and I
- 9:37Speaker 2: just learned to just be myself and understood myself. When
- 9:40Speaker 2: I came into new friend groups, I had more of
- 9:41Speaker 2: a grounded energy about me and I wasn't so anxiously
- 9:44Speaker 2: attached whether they were going to be my friend or
- 9:46Speaker 2: not because I didn't put so much pressure on it
- 9:48Speaker 2: because I was like, but I'm not alone, because it'll
- 9:50Speaker 2: be you. Yeah, absolutely so, Yeah, it is an invitation
- 9:53Speaker 2: for you to sit with yourself and understand yourself. And
- 9:55Speaker 2: what I say to my clients all the time is like,
- 9:57Speaker 2: this is a character building moment for you, a character
- 10:01Speaker 2: building moment. And what I mean by that is in
- 10:03Speaker 2: this season, while there's quote unquote when in your life,
- 10:06Speaker 2: become the person that you want to attract.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Yes, it's like dating, right, right, same thing.
- 10:11Speaker 2: That's right. Who would I want to attract into my life?
- 10:13Speaker 1: What kind of girl is she? What kind of girl
- 10:14Speaker 1: is she?
- 10:15Speaker 2: What does she do? What habits does she have? What
- 10:16Speaker 2: kind of mindset does she have? How does she treat
- 10:18Speaker 2: other people? How does she show up in friendships? How
- 10:20Speaker 2: does she show up when she walks into a room
- 10:22Speaker 2: where she knows nobody? Look at those things that you
- 10:25Speaker 2: want and go okay, Like, where can I become more
- 10:28Speaker 2: of this? How can I put myself out there to
- 10:30Speaker 2: be more courageous and be more confident walk up into
- 10:33Speaker 2: a room and like actually have a conversation with somebody
- 10:35Speaker 2: and start to get out of your comfort zone of
- 10:38Speaker 2: how you've conditioned yourself to be in this fear state,
- 10:42Speaker 2: fearing yourself and fearing other people and like fearing connection
- 10:45Speaker 2: almost you know, because it's like feels like this scarce
- 10:47Speaker 2: commodity that you're like, oh my gosh, like I don't
- 10:50Speaker 2: have it and I need it so desperately. But because
- 10:52Speaker 2: you're clinging onto it, you're pushing it away and that's
- 10:54Speaker 2: not what you want. You want to pull it in closer,
- 10:56Speaker 2: but you need to be grounded in order to do that.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Don't close your heart off. Don't make up a story
- 11:00Speaker 1: that you're always going to be alone, that no one
- 11:02Speaker 1: likes you and you're too weird and you're too much.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Because the right people would love your weirdness. Love your
- 11:06Speaker 1: too much, they'll love your fire. Oursin's coach pulled us
- 11:09Speaker 1: up on this the other day about our content, and
- 11:11Speaker 1: she said, to both of us, there is nothing average
- 11:14Speaker 1: about both of you. There is nothing too much about
- 11:16Speaker 1: both of you. There's nothing weird like your bigness and
- 11:18Speaker 1: how you are behind the scenes. To me, that is
- 11:21Speaker 1: what the world needs to see. Stop watering yourselves down.
- 11:24Speaker 1: And this is the same advice for you, like, be
- 11:26Speaker 1: your full, big weird self, own your weirdness. People fucking
- 11:29Speaker 1: love we'd people. Yeah, so different, they're not just trying
- 11:32Speaker 1: to be like the same old person boring.
- 11:34Speaker 2: And you know what, all of those people who maybe
- 11:35Speaker 2: you felt like on the surface level and nice to
- 11:37Speaker 2: your face, like you don't want people in your life
- 11:39Speaker 2: like that anyway. And you know what, like you're not
- 11:41Speaker 2: going to be everyone's cup of tea. And I've learned
- 11:43Speaker 2: that along the way. Oh my god, how many friends
- 11:46Speaker 2: that I've gone through over the years since I was
- 11:48Speaker 2: in primary school. And let's face it, so have all
- 11:50Speaker 2: of weed. You know, before anyone goes judging of like, oh,
- 11:53Speaker 2: people go through friends and this, and that tell me
- 11:55Speaker 2: one person who hasn't since I school since primary school, you.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Know what I mean. It's aggression of life. It is
- 12:01Speaker 1: and because people.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Grow and evolve and change and reach and we grow,
- 12:06Speaker 2: and like, none of that is wrong. I think you
- 12:08Speaker 2: need to and not need to be this is a choice.
- 12:10Speaker 2: You can take this with a grain of salt, but
- 12:12Speaker 2: be kinder to yourself and just know that just because
- 12:14Speaker 2: you feel this way, you're not going to always feel
- 12:16Speaker 2: this way. And I think in this season, what I'm
- 12:19Speaker 2: hearing that you're actually needing is for you to be
- 12:22Speaker 2: kinder to yourself, like building a relationship with yourself, yeah,
- 12:25Speaker 2: and not needing somebody else.
- 12:27Speaker 1: No, and put yourself in the right rooms. And I'm
- 12:29Speaker 1: not saying just come to the sheet rise this event.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Maybe it's another event, maybe something in your local area. Whatever.
- 12:33Speaker 1: The event is a Girl's Sisters full Moon Circle, it's
- 12:36Speaker 1: a retreat, it's a weekend.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Couse, it's a sunrise meditation.
- 12:40Speaker 1: For example, the girls that came to our byron By retreat,
- 12:42Speaker 1: they were there within a couple of hours and they're like,
- 12:44Speaker 1: what the hell I feel like all these girls I've
- 12:46Speaker 1: known you forever. They're crying and vulnerable and sharing beds
- 12:49Speaker 1: and showing rooms and just having the time of their
- 12:51Speaker 1: lives and they're all still in contact. They're like planning
- 12:53Speaker 1: to meet up.
- 12:54Speaker 2: And they're all coming from all over Australia to literally
- 12:56Speaker 2: meet up with each other.
- 12:57Speaker 1: That's so freaking cool. You know.
- 12:59Speaker 2: There was one thing that one of the girls said
- 13:00Speaker 2: that stood out at the end of the Byron retreat
- 13:02Speaker 2: and it was like, I didn't realize how much I
- 13:05Speaker 2: didn't trust women, Yeah, until I came to this retreat
- 13:09Speaker 2: and I felt the safety in this room. She's like,
- 13:11Speaker 2: I'm walking out of this retreat feeling like it's safe
- 13:14Speaker 2: for me to trust women again. And I've been here
- 13:16Speaker 2: for three days.
- 13:17Speaker 1: How cool is that?
- 13:17Speaker 2: It's incredible?
- 13:19Speaker 1: And also you might meet people and they still might
- 13:21Speaker 1: not work.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Out, Like that's also okay too.
- 13:23Speaker 1: It happens. It happens in adult friendships, relationship life dynamics
- 13:28Speaker 1: all the time. But keep your heart open, be kind
- 13:30Speaker 1: to yourself. So thank you for bringing in and we
- 13:32Speaker 1: really hope today's episode just like gives you a little
- 13:35Speaker 1: bit of ump to like, Okay, what am I going
- 13:36Speaker 1: to do here? I'm gonna put myself in the right room,
- 13:38Speaker 1: So I'm going to go book something. I'm going to
- 13:40Speaker 1: open my heart up, keep it open, not make up
- 13:42Speaker 1: stories and I'm weird or I'm too much or this
- 13:44Speaker 1: and that, because you're not and much for the right people.
- 13:47Speaker 2: And the right people won't make you abandon yourself in
